Hey you! Have obsessive perfectionist tendencies? Boy have I got an artform for you: sound design for audio drama! It has all the things you love the most:
Limitless ability to make infinitesimal changes nobody but you can hear!
No objective sense of what sounds 'right' and what doesn't!
Infinite knobs and dials you can twist! So many ways to have it wrong!
Workflows, workflows, workflows!
If this sounds enticing to you, grab a DAW and a set of headphones (no, not those headphones... eh, better edit for both) and hop aboard!
[Just finished mastering the trailer for Metropolis. Had to extricate myself from a deep, deep rabbit hole of EQ/gating/compressing/de-essing mania.]

Okay as someone who is in school for audio engineering and specializing in audio fiction let me break down why I think @desertskiespodcast is incredible sonically, and rant about one of my favorite topics in audio fiction: setting.
The key to audio drama, in all of my experience, is the setting. Can you ground the story in a place, can you evoke it with sound clearly? I think this is especially important as you get to be smaller and smaller budget productions. It’s why the Magnus archives works from the first episode. We’re grounded immediately in a sense of The Archives and that sense of the story belonging to that place never leaves, even if the script takes us elsewhere.
Wolf 359 nails this too because the story revolves around the Hephaestus. Whether it’s trying to leave, trying to fix it, etc. there are times where characters leave the station, but the story very much happens in context of the station.
I think a drama can succeed without a specific, fairly small and defined space to orbit. Tumanbay comes to mind. But if you think about it, Tumanbay manages to capture this technique with an entire city. The story jumps from character to character and setting to setting so much it becomes a story of the city more than anything else. (Someone please talk to me about tumanbay’s soundscaping some time because I legit almost teared up over a masterful use of panning once)
We don’t criticize any dramas on my page because all are lovely gifts of time and effort usually given to us for free. But I shall observe trends without naming names. Anything with time jumps in it is SO rough on the listener in audio. Especially if it’s time and place. Anything spanning countries or large regions just has a hard time keeping continuity. Anything that’s set in a place where there are very few or no sound cues to clue us in on setting, are all really rough on a listener.
I will pick on Wolverine a little here since Marvel is A Big Company and say that I think the reason it’s a rough transition from season 1 -> 2 is because it’s a complete context shift.
If you think about it, this translates to a lot of the really popular dramas. The Bright Sessions, Welcome to Nightvale, and Wooden Overcoats all function in sonic spaces that are defined and characterized in really lovely ways (the lofi radio eq on WTN, the echoy effect of the mortuary in WO, and obviously the whole therapist/recording gimmick of TBS)
Anyways basically this happens in all storytelling (esp serialized storytelling) but in tv the characters define the setting and in audio the setting is a character. Arguably the main character.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk please listen to Desert Skies and all of the dramas I talked about here they’re all awesome even the ones I picked on

People have been asking about the binaurals I made for some of my content. So here is one of my favorites. I called them "Butterfly Binaurals" because of the panning/fluttering effect I created with them.
Feel free to use them in your own files or whatever, but please let me know if you do, I just love to know people are putting them to good use! Enjoy! 💖

Reminder that the Q&A Live Steam is coming up in ~9 hours (10:00PDT/17:00UTC)! We'll be going live on our YouTube channel to discuss your questions, and there are some good ones queued up! That said, if you have questions during the stream we'll try to get to them. 👍
Also, after this stream we'll be transitioning over to Twitch and ideally start doing semi-regular streams with work sessions, studio news, tutorials, and more Q&A.
(On that note, if this starts to gain traction, we may need a community manager, and regardless, any tips for live streaming would be greatly appreciated as this is fairly new here.)

SM57s are supposed to be indestructible. My tattoo artist (former studio tech) has one that was run over by a Ford F150 (one of the pre-00s ones that was still built Ford Tough) and STILL works and sounds fine
They're also great field mics if you can transport your interface
I'm about to stick one in my garbage disposal for science
