i saw a post with a link to a quiz to see if your oc would be a tumblr sexyman thought it could be fun and then struggled to think of a single male character i had that would be worth trying.

this prompted me to open up my debris document and out of a total of 213 named characters, 121 are female, 29 are male and 63 are in some way outside this binary.

and like... of those 29, seven are preexisting characters pulled from dnd lore, two exist just so other characters have a father, and there's a couple who i'm definitely going to alter their gender in some way now that i think about it.

We're got a couple of assorted asks about quadrant dynamics here. Since they're all related, I'll answer them as a single post.

@galaxa-13 asked: I personally never saw Feferi being annoyed by Eridan talking about feelings with Karkat because he was only supposed to talk about them with her, but rather because he ONLY talked about them with Karkat. She had to do all the heavy lifting in their relationship by making sure he didn't commit genocide, and then didn't get to unwind with some romantic gossip. If my platonic boyfriend never talked to me, but did with others, I'd question him too. @lilietsblog asked: I never read Feferi as being jealous of Karkat in a violating relationship exclusivity / cheating on her way. I read it as a playful "why aren't you talking about stuff with me? is it because you've already talked it all out?" where Eridan was very much supposed to read between the lines and undersatnd that she just wanted him to tell her about his red crushes (awkward, that…) While I'm sure there are specific rituals trolls /only/ do with their moirails, my overall impression is that trolls normally just… don't form relationships close and trusting enough for emotional support like that. The quadrants help by making it semi-mandatory to find SOMEONE. (Also I'm actually sure that a healthy moirallegiance would be reciprocal with both partners pacifying each other, it's just the hemospectrum version of gender roles)

You may have a point. Eridan was clearly a poor moirail from the start - probably because he never actually wanted to be Feferi's moirail. To him, the quadrant was clearly just a stepping stone to matespritship, so he wasn't invested in its dynamics. Feferi's not really angry about Karkat, here - she's just a little frustrated about how one-sided their moirallegence has turned out to be.

That said, I do still believe that quadrants would work better if they were polyamorous - even if this particular scenario doesn't illustrate my point as well as I thought it did.

Sustaining a polyamorous quadrant system would require a level of emotional maturity that the average troll simply isn't going to have - and, like you said, it might be dangerous to widen your circle more than is actually necessary.

I still think the trolls would benefit from such a system, though. On Alternia, it simply wasn't to be - but the Alternian Players now have the chance to build an entirely new culture. Who knows what new dynamics they might discover?

See, I get what you're saying - but the difference, in my opinion, is that that Troll Will Smith was a one-panel joke, whereas the quadrant system has informed our understanding of troll relationships for the entirety of Act 5. Unlike Will, quadrants have stayed relevant, and they've been critical to understanding many of the Alternians' key character moments.

That's not to say that quadrants aren't partially a joke. Frankly, I don't think any of Homestuck is entirely serious - but I do think quadrants are 'real' in the context of the story, and should be analyzed as a legitimate part of its world.

Trolls biologically compelled to enter them before understanding them, a challenge "particularly tortuous for young trolls" (p2393), plus the 600 hour session makes sense of Eq/Nep's relationship's drastic evolution to me.

I've always been a little skeptical about this whole 'biological drive' angle for the quadrants - mostly because there are plenty of human biological drives that are either overstated, misinterpreted, or outright fabricated.

That's not to say that the trolls don't have some sort of compulsion to seek out quadrants. If it does exist, though, I hope it slowly fades, now that the trolls have left their planet and its expectations behind.

You know, seeing Jake and Jane here again, makes me wonder what happened to Rose, Jade, Kanaya, Yiffy and Tavros. I mean, last time we saw them they were in a confrontation with Jane at the church.

I mean, yeah of course it's different writers now and all, but I'm curious to hear what their explanation is for how it ended. Did the rebels simply manage to abscond?

Anyway, it's really cool to see Jake more actively rebelling against Jane.

And finally we get to see what Meenah looks like now!! We only got a very limited tease before, in the scene of her with Karkat, before we got to see Karkat in full during his conversation with John.

It's interesting how much she looks like the Condesce, just like how Karkat looked a lot like the Sufferer.

All. Those. Fish puns. Hahahaha

It took me a while to get the Pierce Brosnan - Mamma Mia reference even though I did see the movie (and its sequel) a couple of years ago.

This whole scene reminded me of the Dreambubble gathering which also included Meenah, Jake, (sleeping) Roxy and Brain Ghost Dirk. Which I believe is also pretty much the only prior interaction we've had between Jake and Meenah?

Speaking of being reminded of things, Meenah warning Roxy about Jane and Roxy thinking Jane can't be that far gone, kind of reminds me of the old days where Roxy tried to warn Jane about how Betty Crocker (AKA Meenah's grown-up version) was not as harmless as she seemed and Jane not wanting to believe it. How things have changed since then…

It kind of makes me sad how Jake still has Dirk in his Pesterchum contacts, even though his Dirk's been dead for many years and isn't coming back. Did Jake keep him as a contact just to remember him, or did Jake really hope that some day he'd see Dirk online again and it turned out he was still somehow alive after all?

I suppose that in a way he did get that after all, what with Brain Ghost Dirk having entered his life again, haha.

This also shows how much Jake cares about John, with John being his only non-B2 Kid contact in this list. Jake's narration of Jane putting "his son" in danger was probably referring to Tavros, but I suppose you could say it also counts for John!

About the Vriska scene

MAN, a SBAHJ reference!!! That has been SUCH a long time.

I love how the "BIMP" can still be seen on the vent when John's talking to Vriska. And the "Thanks for Playing" still being on the sun made me laugh.

Vriska correcting John when he said "leafs" reminds me of those old gags where people corrected one another even though they were actually speaking out loud to each other, haha. Never gets old.

What with how Vriska feels she's stuck with a "fake" John reminds me of her alternate (dead) self being stuck with the Doomed John who was killed by Typheus.

Late reply but I’ve been sitting on some observations I want to discuss.

... Cloudflare, the web host, is down it seems so I’m going to be doing this from memory. Luckily, I can also look at my brother’s reaction post for notes.

How good is it to finally get a view of some of our old protags as guardians in hero mode?

Makes you wonder how Dad, Mom, Bro, Grandpa, Nanna and well B2 Mom, B2 Bro, Grandma & Poppop too, would have looked from their own perspectives in sprite mode :D Probably shorter than guardian sprites! So this takes place around the time of John’s trip to the meteor, as he or Roxy are being listened into by Jane’s goons. We go down memory lane as Harry explores his room & interests, so we get an even better picture of the kid.

Harry Anderson, I saw being pointed out on Tumblr, could be revealed to be a future Prospit dreamer, as he has a made-up bed, which was a distinction the kids all shared. :B

He has a Con Air bunny (reproduction) as well, leading me to think about how this bunny or similar ones are probably owned by Vrissie and Tavros as well. If anything, they might end up getting gifted to Yiffany!

And of course it would have been John gifting this bunny to his newborn son! Some rituals have to be observed!

I said it’s a reproduction (probably), but how funny would it be if it turned out temporally related to the original Liv Tyler bunny, like being a fixed-up version of the bunny Roxy gave to Jane originally, or something? :D The chain of gifting must continue!

It also makes me remember to wonder about the fate of Lil Seb & the Meat-retconned B2 kids on Caliborn’s planet... Feels like they might reappear at some point. Though you have to wonder as well, by now, if that Dirk is also part of Meat Dirk’s superego, or not.

What else? Harry is shown to have quite the extensive chumroll, further underlining the fact that he at least has a cohesive social network outside of his closest friends & relatives, unlike the B1 & B2 kids. (Unless this got somehow retconned by the Pesterquest games.) Harry & Vrissy’s meetup was enjoyingly cute, and I’m hoping their relationship can withstand what the game/world/Vriska throws at them, would be fun to watch them overcome opposition & bias as a couple/throuple with Tavros.

At the end, there’s clear indicators way that Tavros, Vrissy & Harry are about to all be in the same room as Yiffany, a first!

my beautiful little mutual spencer asked a really interesting question which is that IF the subjugglators are responsible for the nightmares that trolls have, are the trolls going to still have nightmares with the subjugglators gone, and are they still going to need sopor slime to deal with those nightmares. so i checked my little sources. and this is the closest thing to an explanation andrew gives on formspring:

For the subjugglators in their small numbers to keep such a large population under their control, it would be very useful to have the ability to psychically amplify fears through dreams. They may have directed their chucklevoodoos on every susceptible mind in the population. Each lowblood may have a little highblood voodoo doll lurking in their subconscious, making them too terrified to organize any sort of rebellion.

we might guess from this that trolls' nightmares stem from a chucklevoodoo doll, which makes sense bc it's also where john and dave's nightmares et al. come from. so the next question might be whether we presume a clown's chucklevoodoo doll sticks around if that clown dies. and since gamzee never REALLY dies, i guess there's no way we can answer that for certain. but im going to go with yes, it sticks around? for a couple reasons.

chiefly that because of the whole dream self thing, there's not really any clear difference between a 'dream object' and a 'real object'... like, dream selves can dissolve into smoke, but generally speaking if you grab something from someones dream room and take it out of the dream room, it still exists as a regular object. an obvious example of this is lil cal; if gamzee got sucked into lil cal at the end of the comic, would that count as gamzee still "being around" to maintain lil cal's existence? it's interesting to think about it... but it's also implied to some degree that gamzee didn't even "create" lil cal, he just used his powers to pull him out of the void... so is that true for all chucklevoodoo dolls? kind of besides the point but still worth thinking about

there's also a question of practicality. like, if subjugglators are constantly controlling the fears of the population at all times, and a subjugglator dies, does another clown have to take over that guy's job and re-curse a bunch of kids... it would be stupid. but. pretty funny to think about. like having to cover your friend's shift at the nightmare factory. funny.

so im going to say the answer is that if you already had a nightmare doll when troll society blew up then you would keep it. and you might need therapy or maybe the good version of an evil clown to get rid of it. but if you were born after the collapse of alternia youre probably fine.

2 more questions though. what about ghosts. ghosts dont really have dream rooms cus they kind of ARE dream people? and we also dont know if they sleep at all. BUT we DO know kurloz could still fuck with meulin's brain while they were both dead. so do the ghosts on earth c for example still have evil fleas.

second question. more of a thought. in his formspring answer hussie also suggests gamzee could have been fucking with everyone on the meteor with his powers, i.e. messing with vriska's luck or terezi's investigative abilities. this has to make you wonder whether gamzee is messing with the voodoo dolls they presumably already have in their minds, or if he is like, adding them? like does your dream self bed just become one of those huge plushy walls over time as you get more and more traumatised

An auspistice can stabilize particularly turbulent relationships. If the auspistice fails to mediate properly, or has no interest in the role, or perhaps has different romantic intentions him/herself altogether, then the relationship often quickly deteriorates into one of an especially hostile and torrid nature. There are many outside factors and influences tugging and pulling these relationships in different directions, and unlike humans who have very orderly, simple, straightforward romantic relationships without exception, trolls exist in a state of almost perpetual confusion and generally have no idea what the hell is going on. Being confused by troll relationships is one thing we do have in common though.

Author commentary: Kanaya/Vriska/Tavros was used as an ashen relationship example a couple pages ago, which I mocked, because it wasn't a strong example. This here is much more accurate. It's also probably a more helpful visual aid of troll romance in practice overall, rather than just in theory. Troll romance is usually a huge mess, involving two or three people flailing around emotionally and locked in vicious cycles with each other. Somebody like Kayana goes, you two are bad news for each other, I gotta step in here. Oh wait, actually I love her, I can't do this, bye. Whoops, they go back to black flirting/sparring. Wait, whoops, now they're in love. But…maybe? No, actually they hate each other, false alarm. The mediator comes back, says holy shit you guys, I've got to put a STOP to this. Rinse and repeat stupidly, forever, or until different romantic players enter the scene and upset the apple cart even more.

11. Eridan Ampora (Generally a prick to everyone, especially when romance is involved, once incel raged his way through 3 people, killing 2, probably would've continued if he wasn't chainsawed, felt bad about it later and didn't really do anything after that)

KinkTober Day 3: Sadistic Giant/Tiny with Vriska Serket

You peek around the corner of the building, glad to have finally escaped Vriska's hive. She had gone out FLARPing with some other trolls, but didn't take you because she didn't want you to try to escape or harm her. Now, as you stared out at the dessert with no clue as to which way would take you back to civilization, you realize she might have made the right choice.

You step around the corner, and start walking, hoping that you had picked the right way, and weren't just going to get stranded and die in the middle of nowhere. You took a few steps out into the moonlight, feeling the heat beat down on your scantly dressed form. You continue walking, occasionally glancing back at the hive to make sure you were still walking in the same direction.

When you look back another time, you see her silhouette cresting the horizon, and break out into a sprint, trying to keep your footsteps as quiet as possible. You know that it's almost certainly pointless, her senses are far better than any human's, and she probably heard you walking before you even noticed she was nearby.

You run until you can't anymore, and glance back again. She's walking towards you at a leisurely pace, her long legs allowing her to easily keep pace with you. You face forward and continue walking, struggling to scrape together the strength to keep running. You hear Vriska call out your name from behind you, and that gives you the adrenaline you need to continue running. You break out into a sprint again, but still hear her footsteps drawing nearer.

You try to run faster, but are unable to move any quicker than you already were. You hear her start running behind you, and then get tackled into the sand on the ground, with her sitting on your back, pinning you in place. You feel her shift her weight and lean down to whisper in your ear, "Now why would you try to run aw8y? Suuuuuuuurely you know that th8t's only going to harm you more."

You started to squirm under her and she got up, then lifted you into her arms with ease. She started striding across the desert, making it back to her hive in half the time it took you. She tossed you over her shoulder while she opened the door and took you up to her bedroom, kicking some stuff out of the way on her floor before dropping you into the empty space. She follows you down, and begins slashing at your clothes with her claws, tearing them all of of you and leaving you totally exposed on the floor.

She stood up for a second, just long enough to take her own clothes off, before laying down on top of you again. She started biting and sucking at the skin on your neck, leaving a trail of bruises and bite marks. You started to cry, tears dripping down your cheeks as you tried to push her off of you. You could tell that this was only exciting her more though, she started biting harder, and you could feel her bulge writhing around near your thighs.

She bit down especially hard and you could feel a trickle of blood dripping down the side of your neck, dripping down onto the floor. You shouted at her to get off of you, and started thrashing around, trying to hit her and do some kind of damage.

She pulled off of you for a second to taunt you, "Huh? I thought you wanted this. Why else would you try to esc8pe unless you wanted attention? Surely I just need to do this a loooooooot more often!" Looking up at her nude form, you began to fear what she would do next. She sat beside you and pulled you up and onto her lap. In this position you could feel her bulge trying to work its way into you, leaving a sticky trail of bright blue wherever it touches. She leaned back so that she was laying in the floor, still holding your arms so that you can't try to move yourself.

She grabs you by the hips and lifts you above her bulge. You grab onto her hands, partly for stability, partly to try to pry them off of you. She starts to slowly lower you down closer to her bulge, and when you feel it slide slightly into your opening, just the tip filling you up almost completely, she pulls you down faster and raises her hips to meet yours. She held you in place there for a while, so that you could feel her bulge struggling to find the space to move around inside you. You started crying from the pain, curling in on yourself slightly, while trying to get away from her.

After she holds you there for a few seconds, she starts to pick up on your sobbing. "Awwwwwwww what's wrong? Is my 8ulge too 8ig for you? Y'know, if you hadn't tried to esc8pe, may8e we wouldn't 8e here. Or rather, may8e I'd 8e nicer."

She lifts you up again, and pulls you down slower this time, but still just as deliberately, and almost just as painfully. She kept pulling you up and down onto her bulge for a few minutes, her bulge's natural lubricant starting to make it less painful, then rolled over on top of you in order to get a better angle.

You stared up at her tall frame above you and waited, afraid of what would come next. She moved you over a little bit, angling your entrance in line with her bulge and pulled you closer so that it would enter you slightly. She moved herself a little bit as well, to get a better angle that she could use to move faster. After a couple seconds of adjusting in silence, she thrusted in again. This time she was a little more gentle, it seemed as though she had already gotten most of her anger out, something you were glad for.

She continued thrusting until she came all over you with a gush of blue fluid, and pulled out. She stood up and grabbed her clothes and yours, walking out of the room with little more than a teasing wave at the door.

I’m mostly keeping your pairings, because I like them. A lot of Homestuck’s powers would break the setting of The Locked Tomb, so let’s just assume the necromancers have the typical abilities of their House, and that the cavaliers don’t have powers. Let’s also assume that the Seventh House is still being impersonated by a Lyctor.

Second House: Captain Karkat Vantas & Lieutenant Terezi Pyrope

A very well-balanced duo. I suspect Karkat would be a half-decent necromancer if if wasn’t for his self-doubt, and Cohort training would replace doubt with cold duty. His magic is particularly destructive, and causes enormous collateral. Bucking tradition, his cav is effectively the leader, as she’s the superior strategist by far.

Endgame: They get pretty far – but when push comes to shove, Karkat would rather die than kill his closest friend, even though she thinks it would be funny. They refuse Lyctorhood, and are murdered by the Seventh.

Third House: Crown Princess Vriska Serket & Prince Tavros Nitram

Vriska embodies the best and worst of both Tridentarii. She’s ruthless, she’s quick-witted, she demands your attention, and she’s not above taking shortcuts. Her cavalier is a lot nicer than the canon one, but just as unlucky.

Endgame: You already know Tavros is ending this story the same way Naberius did. Full Lyctorhood, and the birth of the most dangerous necrosaint the Houses have ever seen.

Fourth House: Baron John Egbert & Sir Dave Strider

These goobers are too nice for the story they’re in. John is enthusiastic, and Dave is dutiful, but they lack the aptitudes required to obtain any keys. If it came to it, Dave is probably the most likely cavalier to pull a Gideon, especially given the Fourth’s tradition of self-sacrifice. John doesn’t have Harrow’s resourcefulness, though, and wouldn’t be able to preserve Dave’s soul.

Endgame: Murdered by the Seventh.

Fifth House: Lady Aradia Megido & Sir Sollux Captor

They’d honestly crush it. Aradia is a born Fifth House spirit talker, and the only Homestuck character to actually be a necromancer. Sollux isn’t a physical fighter, but he declares a laser pistol as his offhand, and no one wants to argue with the creepy scion of the Fifth, so a laser pistol it stays. Since Aradia isn’t a historian, they’re not targeted by the Seventh House Lyctor, and manage to complete most of the theorem rooms before shit hits the fan.

Endgame: Partial Lyctorhood. Aradia eats half of Sollux’s soul, he keeps the other half.

Sixth House: Master Warden Rose Lalonde & Kanaya Maryam

Now we’re talking! A Rose trained on the Sixth would give Palamedes a run for his money, and her partnership with Kanaya would be second to none. Let’s say she still has a romantic history with the Seventh House scion (Feferi, in this case) but is no longer in love with her, having got over her when she and Kanaya became a couple. Palamedes delayed his confrontation with ‘Dulcinea’ due to his feelings, and Rose would confront Feferi much earlier.

Endgame: Can a learned witch of the Sixth defeat an ancient saint of the Seventh? Maybe, if she plays it smart, and makes the right alliances. Write it yourself – I’ve got a liveblog to finish!

Seventh House: Duchess Feferi Pexies & Eridan Ampora

D------EAD before the trials began, Feferi is being impersonated by a sea-dweller Lyctor whose motivations I can’t dig into too much, or I’ll actually start to write this fanfic. Let’s just say she has similar goals to Cytherea, and leave it at that.

Eighth House: Master Templar Equius Zahhak and Nepeta Lejion

Come on, Equius, Your god commands you. Commit the cardinal sin. Become a saint. You’re not going to disobey the emperor, are you?

Endgame: I have just enough respect for Equius that I don’t think he’d kill Nepeta, even if ordered to. They probably go out fighting, before the final confrontation.

Ninth House: Reverend Daughter Jade Harley & Gamzee Makara

Gamzee’s useless, but at least he pulls off the facepaint. Jade’s not going to get much use out of him, unless she’s willing to siphon – as a highblood, he’s probably got a pretty strong constitution. Anyway, Jade’s wolf skeleton constructs are impressive, but she’ll be more or less attempting the trials alone, and that’s a tall order.

Endgame: Not nearly as important as in canon, the Ninth House might survive for a while by not really being a threat to anyone. Jade’s likely to befriend the Second and the Fourth, and go out in a blaze of glory avenging their deaths.

When it was still in the thick of it, god, I remember the DaveKat update and the Commander Karkat update. I hadn't finished Homestuck yet nor did I know anything about HS^2 besides the fact that the fandom hated it and "everyone is so out of character!" and all that jazz. But finally having got to read those updates myself, I completely understand why the fandom was freaking the fuck out about them. I thought the laundry room scene was sweet and felt genuine, despite seeing the kiss and reading some of the exchange up to it I still had a couple heartstrings tugged. I thought the Commander Karkat scene with John was so well executed, and fuck, the art. So fucking beautiful, especially in that bit.

And holy fucking shit, don't get me started on Brain Ghost Dirk and Meenah being back. That shit has me so fucking excited. I adore BGD, I fucking love how he's written and I love how Jake is interacting with him. I love how Meenah was drawn in the recent update, and I feel like the character writing has improved so fucking much from the epilogues. The two characters that really got my attention and really got their game stepped the fuck up in terms of character writing were Dave and Vriska. Those two have always been incredibly difficult to write, it's hard to get all their isms and quirks down but I was so pleasantly surprised by them actually feeling like Dave and Vriska again. While I thought the bit with Obama and Dave in the epilogues was probably one of the stupidest fucking things to come out of it (in a derogatory way), I have found myself favoring Davebot and I really enjoy his dynamic with Aradia.

Also, I was not expecting myself to love the kids as much as I do; I think Vrissy's style is sick as hell and think she's got a lot of potential, god I fucking love Tavros Crocker (poor kid needs a fuckload of therapy though), Harry Anderson is a goofy little fucker, and Yiffany's only crime is her name. God I wish they named her literally anything other than fucking Yiffany but from how it sounds I don't think they had much of a choice. She is a badass fucking character though and I'm so excited to see more of her.

Hope you don't mind me using your tags as an excuse to ramble and give my opinions. I actually don't have a lot of things that I hate about HS^2/BC. Other than yeah, the unfortunate fact that they're a continuation of the epilogues, but for being that I think it's handling the material really goddamn well. I have had an absolute blast getting caught up and I look forward to more updates.

You know, when I finished the epilogues and first began HS^2, I was expecting to fucking hate it. I was expecting it to be as awful a time as the epilogues were. But for a story that follows and takes place in the same universe as them, I actually really love HS^2. I have adored most the art, I've actually felt like some difficult to write characters actually feel in character again for the first time since Act 6, and I have got genuinely emotional over this shit. It's managed to get me caring about DaveKat, man.

I just picked up on it, even though it has actually been present all throughout - when the Narrative addresses WV, it addresses him with information he almost certainly could not know - in a call and response fashion! While he’s jumping from one thought to another in terms of John’s different correspondents, the way that he phrases his dialogue suggests that he is aware of what the Narrative is addressing him.

I’m starting to be able to actually pick up the themes of the whole Exile plotline.

It seems, in general, to be a parable on power and authority, with each of the Exiles representing one kind or another. You’ve got WV who aspires to be first among equals, democratically elected, a community leader and organizer.

You’ve got the White Queen, who fits classical tropes related to the Good Monarch, a symbolic authority.

You’ve got the Peregrine Mendicant, whose take on governmental duty is more that of a functionary - her self-concept is as someone who does what is needed.

And then you’ve got the Aimless Renegade, who, as a Mad Max Type wasteland cop, could be read as either a playful parody of eighties and nineties copaganda, or as a criticism of copaganda, or both - government as the State, an enforcer of constructed order.

Of all of them, it’s clear that WV and PM’s takes on power are the most useful. The White King and Queen are quickly slaughtered once Jack arrives, because without their magical mcguffins, they remain little more than walking talking symbols.

AR is an interesting case though, because his defining character moment is that he hesitates to follow his orders, and while it could be argued that everything that ensues is his fault for not being stone cold enough to do what needs to be done, I’d argue that his hesitation is admirable - Jack escapes to live another day, and the Mayor survives. The Mayor’s infectious compassion ultimately saves his own life through the AR’s refusal to let him die by destroying the command stations in Cascade, because AR is not willing to trade lives.

I’ve never been entirely clear on whether the Dark Gods should be considered evil or simply incomprehensible, morally uncategorizable - in any case, the unique nature of the Kids’ session seems to preclude an ordinary relationship with them. By all accounts they also seem perfectly happy to help Rose create the Green Sun as well, sowing the seeds that will grow into Lord English, their own murderer.

Whatever they’re up to is extremely unclear, and they mostly seem to be a wildcard. I’ll have to see if any of my Homestuck chums have thoughts about the Horrorterrors. With the exception of the Dream Bubbles and their ability to facilitate interaction between the living and the Dead, talking to the Horrorterrors seems to be at best an exercise in facilitating inevitable misfortune - they seem to be all but completely useless.

I suppose learning how to navigate the furthest ring comes in handy exactly once, since it enables the kids to fly to the Alpha’s universe.

Rose’s pessimistic dissatisfaction manifests in two ways during this conversation - the first is her contemplation of self-destruction. Along with her suicide mission, one of the very first things she mentions about Doc Scratch is that he wants to die - which clearly fascinates her. The other thing is that, suspicious of the version of truth that Skaia presents, and lacking an anchor, she is very easily swayed by characters who offer her an alternative truth.

It has just occurred to me that while Rose doesn’t do anything directly to harm her co-players the way that Vriska does, the main actual thing that they have in common, that I was having a hard time putting my finger on, is actually another parallel between the two of them and Aradia - by allowing themselves to be manipulated by forces of evil beyond human comprehension - Doc Scratch in particular - Rose and Vriska both make manifest all sorts of misfortune. In Aradia’s case, it’s her continuous manipulation by the voices of the dead.

Both of them create nearly all of their own problems, and while they’re at it, create immense amounts of suffering from other people who happen to be in the vicinity. And, according to the rules of the Alpha Timeline, both of them therefore give their assent to their misfortune. The Alpha Timeline is, of course, the same as the Glub Glub trap - if you refuse to participate, you are destroyed, but participation is horrible.

Couple things.

The first and most obvious is;

We’re starting to see the fallout of Vriska’s attempts to acculturate Tavros - she’s tried to force a square peg into a round hole, and has had no luck. Tavros doesn’t fit her vision of an ideal troll, and he never will; that’s not the kind of person that he is.

The use of the word hero is what’s important here. Notice especially the way that he draws a line from physical fitness and personal worth - the ability to do important things that you want to do has become Tavros’ idea of how to self-actualize. He has internalized Vriska’s toxic ideas.

The other thing is that while Grandpa may not have literally committed suicide, but he is clearly emotionally checked out of life - playing Indiana Jones when he’s away from home, and interacting with fantasy women at his tea party, instead of engaging with his real life granddaughter.

Suicide’s a touchy subject, one which Homestuck touches on. As I’ve already said, I’m not going to touch on the Epilogues or HS^2, both of which also touch on the subject. It’s not a central theme, I don’t think, although either killing themselves or waiting around to die recur multiple times as possibilities in the minds of different characters, particularly the Lalondes and Striders. I’ll have more to say about each individual instance, but in both the insincere threat of suicide Rose uses in her early strife, and here in Act 5, the act of self-destruction is not motivated by despair, but by spite - for Rose, self-destruction would be an act to spite someone else who wants her to exist.

Grandpa Harley’s complete emotional absence from the life of his loved ones might be called a bit of emotional suicide. Checked out of personal reality completely to pursue a life of fantasy (and to facilitate Sburb), Grandpa Harley may as well have been dead from Jade’s perspective, even before he died.

roxygen: it’s a cute ship...but the sequal vers is garbage considering how inconsiderate roxy is to john’s feelings and his house burning down like damn rox this is the guy who sat with ya as ya mourned doom rose’s death give the guy some fuckin time himself.

rosemary: also cute ship...sequal versions are fuckin godawful tho. their barely a thing in meat from wha i can gather and then there’s candy...oh CANDY kanaya deserves better fuck this sense of her sayin she’s over it idc if it was off screen, even then half the cast ate stupid pills during that time so WHY must i be surprised that this is wha happens?

dave/kat: i dun like it. in either universe. meat is just perfect gay bois who have occasional deep talks and literally do nothing else while candy they split up thanks to jade which, geez ya guys must’ve been shit to tell her to fuck off like come on. og hs wise i barely consider them canon if we only get pictures and them just being on equal footing on quadrant talk. not to mention dave implied to be crushing on jade and JOHN not karkat, idk where this couple even came from other then love triangle situation with terezi but like, that’s barely much of a reason to become canon. i’d go with em bein pale/moirails more.

jadedave: i’m guessing candy and meat i thought meat implied they were dating but may aswell. so....it sucks but thats because candy and meat suck, meat dave’s basically cheating on her i didnt hear any implication they broke up and she’s like...chill??? and then there’s candy where she literally forced him and kar to break up and dated after dirk apparently died, i do not like the implications of this whole thing. course candy dave is dead and a robot now so...anyways canon wise dave had a crush on her and if jade does like him i’d hope it’s not cause of davesprite cause despite both being dave’s they were different. it’s cute otherwise.

davepetajade: it’s...cute? i guess? idk i kinda found davepeta a bit...idk overwhelmingly overrated? like i know where their popularity came from but readin the series now after all that hype i dont really see it anyways tho it’s basically davespritejade with nepeta in the mix. and idk nothin implied much of nepeta liking jade, or talkin to her much. and davepetasprite is a mesh of both so idk. it’s a ship with cute fanon works of em hanging with outfits but that’s bout it.

janejake: i hate it. legit. this is disgusting and completely throws out jane’s character. like even in the fixed timeline the talk she had with dirk probably still happened on the god bed’s and how she acknowledged wha she thought was wrong on wantin jake’s kids and so on trickster still happened and how she also realized she might’ve overhyped jake. but lets throw it ALL out the window to force jake in an unhappy marriage in both universes and possibly force him to stay in candy due to having tavvy if i’m reading the implications right. even then jake isn’t good for jane either both got their own needs this ship would’ve been sunked in canon and WAS but the sequals are beyond it so maybe that explains it but it disgusts me.

roseterezi: guess in meat specifically. yeah i kinda dont...care for it, like i still cant tell if rose and kanaya broke up or if she just fucked off without breaking up either one is fucked up on kan’s behalf. even then i just dont care for their kismesis it got brought up once and that was it.

jaderose: candy wise i guess even tho it was a fling. it disgusts me still mostly because of kan’s behalf on bein fucked over and both goin through a ‘surrogation’ process without her notice. like fuck this shit the jaderose fans deserve better.
