ugh ok ok ok i am running wild with this gloom infection concept so i wrote a bunch of stuff down before i forget. subject to change bc im kind of just spitballing as of rn
CW for horror/gore/outbreaks of illness/discussion of violence
Twilight
19
Comes from Ordon. Ordon was one of the last places for the gloom to reach. Twilight’s not sure if he’s the only one left, but he’s searching for the others despite the village being more or less destroyed.
Was infected with gloom, was “cured” in Faron Spring (read died and resurrected via light spirit shenanigans)
Instead of Twili markings he has gloom scars. He keeps his left arm in wraps where the gloom left his bone exposed at his wrist and upper arm. The wounds are just kind of there and don’t seem to get better but aren’t getting worse. They no longer give him pain and don't bleed. He also has scars on his cheeks/forehead. The whites of his eyes are a little dull
Gloom did weird shit to him! He doesn’t see well but he has sharp smelling and hearing. He’s very slow to bleed so can sustain more damage but is also very slow to heal. Sunlight’s not great for him and he's pyrophobic
Gloom infected people don’t come after him anymore
Around large groups of infected he sort of joins the mob but can be brought out of it with distance
Somewhat forgetful
Brawler - will use improvised weapons or just go fully barehanded against infected
Wild
17
Comes from Hateno
Got trapped in a house fire set by a neighbor, managed to survive through divine intervention
Lost his memory, covered in scars. The scars cause him mobility issues
Selective mute as a trauma response
Long hair :D but more like TotK length and not LU length
Agile - good at climbing, uses a compound bow and hunting arrows (or makes his own in a pinch)
Wanders aimlessly without a home to attach himself to or people to look for
Makes elixirs/good cook
pretty reckless, enjoys looting to find Good Ingredients XD
Wars
23
From Castle Town
Military background - one of the few survivors of the initial outbreaks
Had to put down a lot of his own men and civilians
Very outwardly aloof and avoidant of his trauma
Control issues, compulsive need to be "hygienic" (sometimes to the point of harm)
Adept with firearms and will use improvised weapons to spare ammo
Left Castle Town to go to Outset Island
Wind
14
Outset is mostly untouched by the gloom, but the island is quarantined
Mainlanders tried to flee to the islands and it caused chaos leading to riots
In the chaos of the riots, Aryll was mistakenly taken to the mainland and Wind went after her
Really good at making and setting traps
Terrified of the infected
Gloom
Outbreak caused by Ganon’s tomb being unsealed and his curse being unleashed
The gloom is spread through bodily fluids like blood or spit. Most commonly it’s spread through biting and scratching
Gloomhands can also spread the infection and expedite it into hours rather than days
Infected wounds can be treated with brightbloom seeds which only grow in the very gloom infested depths under Hyrule which makes the medicine hard to come by
Gloom slowly rots the infected while they’re alive. It also degrades mental capability such as cognitive function and sanity. Progresses very similar to dementia except it causes aggression and violence
Gloomhands are borne from several infected corpses piling in one place
Gloom scars are called “gloom burn” because they resemble burn scars. A lot of times the flesh doesn’t entirely heal with successful treatment
The Chain
They converge at Lon-Lon through coincidence
Tasked by Hylia to beat Ganon and end the curse
The Zelda’s all wield light magic which can cure gloom infection and with enough strength (usually through multiple of them gathered) can reverse the effects of gloom and create safe oases
Aside from needing to mull over the rest of the chain, i'm also considering appearances from Midna, the resistance, ravio & hilda, and phantom ganon
the map will be mostly based on totk with some adjustments. modern contemporary setting with fantasy elements.
#somer writes#lu fanfiction#linked universe#lu chain#the infection trend but its gloom and its zelda not ponies#this would trend towards a dark series#probably a lot of body horror and general gore#pestilence au

I am rotating Light so hard in my head rn girlies who just straight up fucking torture ppl cause she can
#rat rambles#rain posting#oc posting#I <3 iterator gore and body horror if I was a better artist Id draw the horrors shes inflicted on some of these poor bastards#Im also brainstorming ideas for some more iterator ocs both so I can have more iterator ocs who arent chronically offline and so that I can#make them be some of lights victims and put them through some truly horrific shit#light vc omg haiii I saw you noticed some of the organisms I pumped into your bloodstream finally Ive been waiting sooo long to show this#stuff off so feel free to give mild resistance to my demands so I have an excuse to permanently disfigure your puppet :3#I have one girlie vaguely conceptulaized and some vague ideas for the sort of roles I want the others to have in their lil friend group but#its all still very very vague concepts Ill have to brainstorm some more to get more solid ideas for them#in the meantime Ive also been thinking of some potential unparalleled innocence hc stuff#nothing super concrete but I am slowly building some new hcs that will relate to the tortured girlie I have some ideas for#but yeah I had a blast telling my friends abt synchronized light today and getting my intended reaction of aw thats cute that turns into#horror as I progress down the timeline#my intent with these two is for them to initially come across as rly fun and cute and just generally very easy to connect to only for the#immediate second layer to their characters to fucking evicerate all of those feelings#also parasite horror is both some of my favorite (cause its horrifying) and least favorite (cause I can get legitimately paranoid) shit#and just the image of being an iterator and realizing that there is malicious shit inside of you that you werent able to immediately detect#is so delightfully fun to me especially considering how vulnerable a lot of these iterators probably already felt just letting the#construction and repairs happen only to find out that that vulnerability Was abused horrifically and that its far too late to stop it#anyways I need to go talk to myself in the shower to brainstorm some more lol

Statement of : Gordon Martinez Freeman, 30 year old MIT graduate,Regarding a peculiar video game he’d found.
Recorded direct from subject, May 16, 200-
Statement begins.
Pt 1 > here
ABOUT 👇
Hello! I am the author of this AU, you can find my main at @inkzectz , for more meta questions about this AU, or for general comments about it, please go there.
What is the AU about?
LA : AI is a crossover AU of sorts, in the simplest way put, it’s TMA but with HLVRAI characters, TMA stuff happens but altered to fit the general HLVRAI narrative, and with my own changes, headcanons, etc. added
I will be updating/editing this post as I progress.
Will it have spoilers?
Disclaimer!!
The AU will have a lot of the original themes of hlvrai and more so TMA, more so, horror themes, this will include gore, body horror, worms, decomposition, cult themes, psychological horror, arachnophobia, flashing imagery, etc.
(Will update as I go on)
I also feel it is important to mention this is the first time I have ever made a ask blog/ web comic/ published a story online, I will make mistakes, please bare with me as I am trying to figure things out.
English is not my first language, I do my best to grammar check and write well, but at the end of the day I will also be making mistakes.
Please be patient with me.
This au is a passion project of mine that I am doing on my free time because I want to, it is important to remember as a reader, I do not owe you anything.
It is best if you’ve seen it but as of writing it right now (early ep 4) there aren’t any spoilers. Once I am a little further ahead then you may want to listen to it.
Yes, not a lot, but vague/mild spoilers about how the world works, plot points, and character.
Again the spoilers will be vague and mild at worst, as it progresses I would recommend listening to tma, but it’s sort of like how while half life knowledge is helpful in hlvrai it isn’t exactly necessary to enjoy hlvrai bc it’s different enough from it to not really matter (?) I hope that makes sense.
Asks rules
- No telling [ player ] exactly what happens ex : “omg [ player ] when you weren’t looking [ npc ] said this very important thing that is supposed to be kept secret for lore reasons”
- Please avoid asks like “tell this character they’re pretty” while I appreciate the compliment, I am trying to write a story and want to keep things as on topic as possible. Instead tell me on my main if you like the art, I’ll probably reply with a doodle or something, just not on here.
- Less so of a rule but more so of a general statement, I will be avoiding asks that either are too close to what happens or if answering would mean progressing the story too quickly, there’s a lot I want to happen and I want time to do it all.
- Another one that’s less of a rule and more of a general thing, if I don’t like what you said I won’t be answering.
- I also sometimes just don’t know how to answer some things.
- Please be respectful of the ships I choose to include and don't force your own, ship wars and such will not be tolerated.
- Please be respectful of others and do not spoil anything, not everyone has listened to TMA and knows it's themes.
I will not be answering everything, I cannot always get to every message so please be respectful of that.
Select character
Character abouts! [ Will be updating as I continue to work on the story ]
[ select ] > Mr. Freeman

> Gordon Martinez ‘Martini’ Freeman
30 y.o . 6’0 . 230lb . Romani / Puertorican . male [ he/him ] . bisexual
[ PLAYER ]
> Lives in Seattle, MIT graduate, left Black Mesa, works as a librarian IRL but also makes money via streaming video games occasionally, in real time it is 2018.
> Believes in the paranormal out of fear but tries to rationalize out of denial, he will never admit something is supernatural and will jump through hoops to rationalize even if deep down he does believe.
> Has a son named Joshua Medrano Freeman, who is 6 years old, Gordon and his old partner met in college but split up before Joshua was born, they remain civil but are nothing more to each other than Joshua’s other parent.
> Gordon rents an apartment with 3 rooms, his own room, Joshua’s room, and a third that used to be a guest room but he has so little visitors he’s just chosen to revamp it into a gaming room.
> Gordon works primarily in a library for now as he’s looking for a better job.
> Gordon often wears hoodies, sweaters, t-shirts, crew necks, and any general outfit one would wear at home, long curly hair that is beginning to grey due to stress, unkempt goatee, and almost always wears green tinted glasses [ he doesn’t need glasses he just thinks they’re cool ]
> His hair is usually pulled back in a ponytail but can also be found in a bun or just down.
< [ select ] > Mr. Coolatta
> Thomas ‘Tommy’ Coolatta, primary researcher, and technical head of the institute.
39 y.o . 6’7 . 190lb . Chinese/filipino . Male [ he/him ] . ???
[ NPC ]
> His father owns the Lambda institute and he grew up in it, he officially started working in the archives when he was 24, and of all the employees in the entire institute he has worked there the longest.
> No one knows who his father really is, Tommy being the only one who’s ever actually seen / spoken to him, his father is the real head of the institute but gives most his orders through Tommy, so Tommy is also technically the head as well.
> Not much is actually known about him, besides his father he doesn’t appear to have any other family, nor does he ever speak of his personal life much.
> Tommy primarily works as an archival assistant, specifically in research, he is the one who will verify details regarding statements or do further investigations into aspects of the statements.
> Tommy is quite the colorful character, often wearing colorful clothing and accessories, he seems to think doing so brings some cheer into an otherwise boring environment, he often wears patterned polo shirts, cheap company bracelets, pins, lanyards, pant chains, but is never without his signature multicolor propeller hat.

oops i meant headcanons for dc (😨)
[ask game]
😨: fear-themed headcanon
idk if you had a specific character in mind for this, but i’ll default to barry + hal as per uzhe ^__^
a lot of ppl have played around w the fun contrast of barry’s fear of heights and hal’s flight powers/passion for flying planes, either by having hal tease him abt it when he has to fly them somewhere or by helping him thru his fears as his trusted emotional support. and while barry’s thoughts on hal’s interests/abilities range from supportive to admiration to confused acceptance, we also know that he views it as smth reckless and completely beyond him
going off of that, i think their dynamic should have the inverse as well
while flying is hal’s expertise, forensic science is barry’s, and it would be just so delightful if hal was squeamish over the bodies and crime scenes that barry’s completely used to. he even seems fascinated by them, which only befuddles hal even more (now he knows how barry feels!)
obviously, hal is very familiar w death, both of others and his own, but alien/monster gore (which is what he’s more often surrounded by) is different. ofc death of any creature is disturbing to witness, but there’s a certain level of unmatched horror in seeing smth that resembles you, a reflection of your humanity, in a state of death. and while hal is used to violence, it’s the aftermath of it that rly fucks him up
there’s smth abt how he never got to see either of his parents’ bodies when they died that i think should deeply affect him. we get a glimpse of that in knight terrors, and i’d like to believe that it extends to dead bodies in general. it’s real in a way he never learned how to confront

now, i don’t think barry knows abt all this, i’m not even sure hal is consciously aware of it himself. i mean it’s pretty normal to not like seeing dead bodies, that’s kinda the societal default. barry’s the weird one for choosing a job that keeps him surrounded by corpses 24/7, voluntarily working overtime, talking to the bodies when he’s alone, etc. hal probably thinks this makes his whole reckless flying obsession seem normal in comparison. but you know what they say, one man’s passion is another man’s worst fears !
#if you can’t tell my halbarry writing is led by their opposite/inverse natures U__U#probably why they come as a pair in my brain sm. they make it too fun and easy for me#ty for the ask!#halbarry#hal jordan#barry allen#dc#danswers#ask game#also needless to say barry is not desensitized to death or violence#the passion is just as much a trauma response as hal’s disturbance#the same could be said the other way around too. bc ofc (tho barry’s fear of heights is less so)

Idk if you've already answered this, but what are your general headcannons for Rhino and Kangaroo? How do you view their personalities, and how do you think they are likely to interact with the MC and Fox. I love your headcannons! 🫶💕💕💕
OOOOOO IVE BEEN WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO ASK THIS
🦏Rhino (Darius Gonzalez):
-personally, I believe hes a single dad. He has such heavy dad vibes. His daughter is so sweet too <3 shes his little princess who he'd do anything for.
-that being said, hes an extra loyal body guard to fox. He knows hes got a little girl waiting for him at home, and while Fox may be a bit above hurting kids, hes not above hurting his employees.
-bros gotta be mixed. I originally though black and white but upon further inspection my guess is afro latino. Maybe half Mexican and white.
-lowkey really chill dude. Hes very laid back. He likes a lot of splatter horror movies and his room has framed posters of some classic slasher flicks. Owns a lot of old band tees with bleach stains and faded prints.
-mechanic build. Bro is all arms. Ofc hes got a bit of a stomach <3 and some thick thighs.
-he has a part time day job painting houses and fixing roofs. It's easy and flexible hours so hes not having to juggle his body guard job and his kid all in one.
-TATTOOS. Hes got cool looking sleeves with them. He originally wanted to be a tattoo artist, but ya know...got roped into...this.
-He LIKES the goreporn fox produces. Hes not obsessed with it, he can get off to softer stuff too. He was kinda just clicking around looking for something to get off and kinda dug to deep...
-Hes on high alert for the police. Not because hes done anything wrong, but if hes not careful they'll find out about his...job. And honestly fox can lie and say that he just works for a porn company if the police ever try to interrogate him about Rhino's employment. But CPS would NOT like hearing that he works for a porn company when he has a kid. The only time hes had run ins with law enforcement is cause of his baby mama having beef with him and because he got into a couple of bar fights.
-before working for Fox he was probably a bouncer for some exclusive club. Fox noticed him and started keeping some tabs on him before deciding to hire him. After all, you gotta have muscle around!
🦘Kangaroo (Adrian Lee):
-the much energetic one of the bunch! He makes a lot of jokes and laughs a lot. To him gore is much of a joke than it is a turn on. But it can be both!
-the scar on the left side of his body I imagine is actually from acid burn. Acid is a bit more controllable than fire is, and of course the damage was inflicted by fox. My guess is Kangaroo probably was one of his victims beforehand, or he helped one of Fox's victims out and got caught. At least Fox paid for the skin grafting! Bro is still missing an ear tho
-this is more of a crack hc, but me and my friends have a joke where Kangaroo is actually Australian. You can guess why.
-hes blind and partially deaf on the left side thanks to fox. I dont think the acid got in his ear, I just imagine Fox fired a gun right next to Kangaroo's ear to torture him some more. The blindness is def from the acid tho. It was all done on a stream too. So everyone got to see his skin bubble as he writhed on the floor.
-his part time day job is working cashier at a grocery store! It's kinda hard finding jobs where the employer doesnt outright scream when you walk in. Let alone jobs that hire you while being half blind. (All of fox's guards have part time jobs to hide the fact they work for a sadistic snuff maker).
-Hes a cat person! Adrian loves cats, especially the hairless ones. He thinks they're so silly and goofy. He adores cats. Bro def feeds strays in his free time.
-Hes much of a gore enjoyer than Rhino is. Like I said it gets a laugh out of him. Plus he doesnt mind seeing some getting all cut up before brutally fucked <3
-Kangaroo works out regularly. It's kinda like his reminder that hes alive. He use to do cool shit like that one Baki pose where hes holding himself with nothing but his arms, but since the acid he just works out to stay in shape. He does a LOT of cardio and boxing (I imagine that's the actual reason why hes named Kangaroo).

Lmao what’s this? I’m back with more Creepypasta headcanons, this time for Eyeless Jack.
TW for the following: graphic descriptions of cannibalism/murder/gore, depictions of drug abuse, lacing food with sharp objects, body horror, and generally anything you’d expect from horror.
THERE ARE NO CENSORS BEYOND THIS POINT, READ AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DISTRESS CAUSED BY MY WRITING.
Eyeless Jack Headcanons
He/they
Obviously no longer human
Still has a humanoid-ish body
“Died” around 2011, physically 22
Dark gray skin with a faint blue-ish tint
His blood is black. Like it’s basically oil or tar now. Moves much slower and is thicker than normal blood. He hasn’t checked but he’s pretty sure all his organs share the same color and viscosity now. Like that one breed of chicken with black organs y’know?
Long ears
Lots of sharp teeth. Practically a shark mouth
Y’know what, I like you. Gives your EJ a jaw that unhinges, a mouth that rips open, and a second jaw further back in his mouth (eel jaw EJ supremacy)
3+ long black tongues depending on his mood and how well fed they are
Because of the multiple mouth appendages he has a soft lisp and often accidentally bites his tongues since they move involuntarily
Eyes are constantly leaking the black sludge. Clothing/face/belongings are always sticky
Constantly salivating the same substance, just thinner/more liquidy
Wears a surgical mask under his regular mask to combat it
Very good sense of smell
Seriously he could smell a specific blood type in the middle of a massacre of a shit ton of bodies
Can’t swim
Reddish-brown wavy hair, forgets to cut it sometimes so he sometimes has a fluffy mullet
Claws that can’t retract
Wears a black trench coat and dark gray turtleneck when actually going out and doing shit, the black hoodie is lounge clothes
Has a tail!!!! Closest resemblance to a lion tail, but larger
Lots of catlike/animal like behaviors unconsciously. Will sit on any elevated surface
Purrs like holy fuck the first time someone hears him do it they freak out
Can also growl and hiss
Despite the animalistic behaviors and feral demeanor he isn’t above being civilized
Mostly calm. Gets the zoomies after eating tho
And by zoomies I mean he’s more excitable and extroverted for a little while
Has probably ran around the woods like a maniac at least once tho
Besides Nurse Ann, he’s the most medically competent of the pastas. People usually go to him for more major injuries or sicknesses
Despite his constant orifice leakage he tries to be as clean as possible
His lab is SPOTLESS
somehow figured out a way to dilute his face goop to clean it better. No one knows how he does it tho
Is still very much a nerd. Loves reading any kind of book he can get his hands on
Starts going blind if he doesn’t satiate his hunger for flesh and organs
If he goes blind before getting food, he’s able to use echolocation pretty damn well
Can also see thermal outlines of stuff if his vision starts going
Eyes aren’t reflective so it’s pretty funny when he’s gargoyling somewhere in the manor in pitch black and someone walks in and gets startled by him sitting there staring into the void
HOW are his footsteps so silent
Dude you’re 5”8 and have a stockier build how do you not make floorboards creek
Can eat normal food, but poses no nutritional value to him
Can halfway survive off raw animal meat in emergencies, but doesn’t give him enough energy for long
Only fully kills someone about once a month, the rest of the time he’s able to meticulously and stealthily steal a kidney from unsuspecting victims without incident
Not that he hates killing or anything like that, he’s just as violent as the rest of the freaks
But he HATES the feeling of losing control he often gets when he indulges the violent urges. So he holds himself back most of the time
Besides murder and organ harvesting he often goes out to steal medical supplies from houses and smaller town clinics
Remember him being a nerd? Likes to impress people with gross biology trivia. Most are about the human body but he knows a ton of animal facts too
“Did you know flies and roaches can still live without their heads” type shit
Can’t cook for shit. He’s not allowed in the kitchen period after one of his organ jars exploded in the fridge due to air pressure bs. Ruined all the food in there
Stores his organs in four different mini fridges in his room and lab
Kidneys give him the most energy but he enjoys flesh more than organs when it comes to taste
His favorite is cheek meat and anything involving the neck
Loves to burst the carotid artery and mess around with the blood like a sprinkler toy
Gives the bones of any corpse he fully consumes to Slender. Has no idea what he needs the bones for but never cares to ask
Friends/close with Ben, Helen, Liu, Ann, Masky, and Hoody
Has a tolerable relationship with Jeff, Kagekao, Slenderman, the Puppeteer, Jane, and Clockwork
Doesn’t get along with/hates LJ and Nina
Sally is TERRIFIED of him. Y’know cause little kids are scared of the doctor and whatnot. He tries his best to be as unintimidating as possible when around her but she still prefers Ann over him
HATES being called EJ. It’s a horrible nickname. What if he walked up to you and called you legless Larry after cutting off your legs?
Abrosexual
Loves loves loves LOVES doing dissections/vivisections. Has somehow been able to convince or bribe the other undead and non human mansion inhabitants to let him do a vivisection on them at least once.
Ben enjoyed it the most because he’s a freak like that
“And this is your heart” “gross……. can I poke it” “yeah ok”
Is unfortunately able to understand the corrupt scripts of [REDACTED] thanks to the ritual that took his eyes and life. Tries his best to ignore it.
Nightmare haver! Is too stubborn to go to someone like Ben or Slender to get them less frequently even though both could easily help him
Kind of an insomniac anyways but since his face is almost always covered no one notices the eye bags
Usually takes the top layer mask off around his friends, or if the other masked pastas take theirs off around them as a sign of mutual trust
Surgical mask on their face stays on constantly unless eating or doing anything privately
Has to keep the meds locked up because Ben, Masky, and Jeff have drug problems
“STOP trying to get high off Benadryl it’s not even allergy season anymore you don’t need it”
Not a “dad” character he just doesn’t like wasting resources like that
Doesn’t care about the actual habits JUST STOP STEALING HIS MEDS
LJ for some reason keeps stealing any of his used needles and scalpels. Jack’s best bet is he puts the sharp objects in candy. Gross.
He’s befriended Seedeater the same way a zookeeper befriends a large dangerous animal
Both have a mutual understanding Seed is NOT a pet
It hasn’t even let them pet or touch it
Does follow him closely like a dog whenever he walks through the forest for any reason
Jack has witnessed it take down and decapitate a bear with a single bite before
If he ever has leftovers or parts of corpses about to go bad that they can’t eat himself, they feed it to Seed
Has a small collection of the black fur and feathers that naturally shed from Seed’s body
Also collects other odd things like animal bones or human teeth
His favorite weird thing they’ve collected is a taxidermied axolotl stolen from a victim’s home
Is also super blunt
Not out of malice, he just has a very technical straightforward way of thinking
Always asks anyone for consent when doing anything physical like medical procedures or even just nudging someone out of the way if he’s trying to get somewhere
HATES being touched without their permission or knowledge
Will bite if provoked. Will bite as a warning too

Autistic Wenseday Addams
It was a cold winters day at nevermore academy where a werewolf and a raven are talking
Enid: Uuuugh...why do you have to be so mysterious all the time!
Wednesday: to make sure no one can ever get past my defenses like seriously if people knew that I was seeing a therapist, they'd use it against me, try to make my therapist tell them something useful.
Enid:uuum...willa
Wednesday (completely in her own world): I don't get it with your teenage need to tell everyone everything it only makes you weaker and an easier target, for an example of people knew I had autism they'd use my sensory issues to spring a tr-
Enid: WILLA SNAP OUT OF IT!
Wednesday:...I've said to much...
Enid: I wish you would have told me you had autism, that honestly explains too much TBH, the weird social unawareness, your obsession with torture, blood, gore, and horror in general, along with your writing time, those must be your hyper fixations, not to mention how you will sometimes refuse to talk In social situations, that's probably your body shutting down, and your distaste of bright colors and physical contact must be sensory issues, like fr, this could have been so useful to know.
Wednseday:...Even with me slipping up on my autism diagnosis, you know a lot for some one just figuring it out, what are you hiding wolf?
Enid: oh yeah one of my brothers had autism so obviously, that if it were light it would be brighter than the sun itself but my mother is an ablist among many other equally terrible things, so I had to help him cause no one else would.
Wednesday: I'm going to put the offer on the table that I'm still willing to kill your mother Judy saying
Enid: WILLA! NO! You can not and will not kill my mother...but if you do want to do a solid for me I need you to trust me on a few things, Deal?
Wednesday: it's a deal I suppose.
Part 2 coming soon
Sup This was originally supposed to be a one shot but I've decided that I'm just going to make it a series exclusive to Tumblr because I don't have Ao3 energy recently so enjoy, the next part will either be about all the sensory items or at least a group, maybe just one if I can get enough detail out of it.

Problematic Yuri Tournament Season 2 - Losers' Finals

Suteki na Kanojo no Tsukurikata vs. Murciélago
Suteki na Kanojo no Tsukurikata (visual novel by sushi_soft)
psychological, erotica
Sexual Content: HIGH; Gore: NONE; Violence: HIGH // Eroge, has a censored Steam version.
Mod submission.
Mod-submitted problematic elements:
Yandere protagonist meets a girl who looks just like her first crush and tries to "train" her into her perfect girlfriend. Noncon/dubcon heavy.
Mod-submitted content warnings:
Noncon, dubcon, non-yuri sexual assault, unreality, paranoia, drugging, death, abusive parents, suicidal ideation.
Mod-submitted propaganda:
It's probably concerning that we relate to Sumire. This VN is pretty rough around the edges and leaves its mysteries open-ended, but anyone who wants a yuri where things go wrong and get worse all the time and the protagonist's mental state is in constant decline may appreciate this VN! It also has petplay.
Murciélago (manga by Yoshimurakana)
action, comedy
Sexual Content: HIGH; Gore: HIGH; Violence: HIGH
Submitted 2 times.
Submitted problematic elements:
Main character is a serial killer lesbian. theres incest, rape, body horror, emotional manipulation, among others
Protagonist is a serial killer, sexual predator, and a pedophile. She's basically the worst woman of all time. She also manipulates several women into sleeping with her.
Submitted content warnings:
oh yeah i mean tw for violence, incest, rape, bullying, children in peril and others
Extreme violence and gore, explicit sex, sexual assault, pedophilia, child murder, cannibalism, and just a general mess of nasty stuff
Submitted propaganda:
Its got an actually evil lesbian MC who has a lot of depth. Its funny as fuck and its got really interesting narrative, amazing action and compelling characters. Its also very sexy and beautifully drawn
Kuroko Koumori is the best character in yuri history and absolutely nobody does it like her.

WILDS SPOILERS BELOW!!!
aka discussing the post game story and the botched return of gore magala
being very nitpicky but there’s something very off about gore magala + the frenzy in wilds and after thinking about it more i feel like i narrowed it down
it’s a real shame too because i absolutely love the fairly revamped fight!!! tempered especially is way more unpredictable. the introduction cutscene was hype as hell and i adore how the horror of frenzy is depicted, since in 4/4u it was fairly tame in cutscenes outside of one instance. (maybe two but it’s kinda an indirect result? seeing ioprey cannibalize the iodrome was sick but they weren’t infected, the zinogre they were fighting was.) i always can’t wait to see gore, but there’s definitely a right and wrong way to bring back a monster.
so uh me being ranty time
-this was an issue in risebreak too but the new art direction the series took toned down how shagaru looks and that extended to gore when parts are broken. shagaru is meant to be angelic—pretty much an angel of death or akin to the grim reaper in some aspects—which, while some of the saturation was to accommodate the nintendo 3ds’s screen, every old school appearance including frontier kept the bright golden sheen its body has. in sunbreak it’s more skin colored??? its most noticeable with gore tho and sadly that extended to wilds. any glimpse beneath the black shell given just looks like skin or molt, not the golden scales it’s supposed to have. again, old school had this, and it makes more contextual sense in that regard, so idfk why they changed it. even without old school it doesn’t make sense.
-this one probably doesn’t bother most but okay world fucked up a lot of returning monster roars (ex. zin having very generic wolf howls) so did expect that for wilds but goddamn the gurgly growls added are bad. again seems to be tied to the realism push but part of what made gore so perfect was how unnatural it was in both looks and sound design. the iconic big roar is literally human screams in reverse plus slightly altered. the deep grunts it made when hurt are unexpected and unfitting, which further added to the alien feel. on a sensory scale for me at least the gurgles are especially bad :(
-being restricted to only the cliffs is also questionable. gore’s “nest” kinda resembles heaven’s mount and sanctuary, but 1. gore roamed outside of those areas, going as far as wooded and grassland biomes, and 2. due to the plot stating frenzy impacted the dragon torch, it should be found in wyveria, too, yet it isn’t. just more context nonsense.
-how the frenzy was implemented is baddddd (and it turns out the frenzied monsters don’t even work as intended anyways (they’re the weakest monsters in the game and don’t have the attack and speed buff they were meant to have) which is extra stupid). in general the existence of the magalas but no frenzied monsters is stupid because that makes their inclusion very unnecessary since it defeats both their purpose and their ecological lore. with sunbreak i feel like it could be justified since shagaru being out of sanctuary and risen shagaru imply magala actually feed off of other diseases/mass extinction events as well (though this can be argued against).
-big story issue in particular is how it feels incredibly tacked on. for me it was really fucking hype, especially with the return of investigations, but on a gameplay and contextual standpoint, being restricted to such a small pool of monsters—most of whom are only found in the cliffs, forest, and hollow—doesn’t make it feel like an actual threat, especially since those monsters tend to be on a lower threat level. the true terror of the frenzy was that no living being save for elder dragons were spared, with wyverns suffering the worst of it. wilds definitely built off the former using the story cutscenes and rove, as previously the infection impacting humans/lynians/wyverians was just implied (the hunter being the only example of a human being impacted), so the open clarification is a welcome inclusion. the restrictions really bog down that threat, though.
4/4u also made sure to show the ecological impacts, with monsters normally under the radar, posing minimal threat, or in other habitats suddenly coming out of the woodworks and fucking up the natural balance. this included elder dragons too, with dalamadur and gogmazios emerging as a result of changing times.
with wilds it really isn’t well displayed? while the game claims oh the inclemency has greatly damaged the environment, it’s not shown outside of just having that be the only weather option until you beat all the apexes. arkveld’s reintroduction showed several monster corpses, so at least they could do that, or make environmental hazards more dangerous and frequent, but it’s really just the same. essentially a lot of telling not showing.
speaking of arkveld, man you can’t tell the “frenzy infecting the water supply trickled to arkveld and made it berserk” was just a tact on reason behind why you can fight it and why frenzy got included when the actual justification was right there???? guardian arkveld could only properly eat via elemental absorption, so while next gen arkveld have proper organs, they’re still underdeveloped and they have the instinctual need to harvest elemental energy, hence why they continue to wreak havoc. frenzy doesn’t fit that.
it just feels like nostalgia bait or justification for bringing back gore without actually making any impact.
-also miss how normal monsters would suddenly fall ill and then get the frenzy, not always appearing as frenzied??? again more contextual sense that also enhances gameplay and worldbuilding.
-in general the entirety of the high rank story feels rushed at best, with no significant fights save for normal ark and gore, leaving the inclusion of frenzy and gore absolutely pointless. if they have no impact, why is the frenzy plotline there?
cool to see a few returning monsters but they were already shown off. i’m sure future updates will build on this, but that doesn’t excuse the lackluster writing and content. seriously a lot of it would’ve been fixed with a few more surprise monsters and shagaru (because having gore without shagaru makes no sense) along with more frenzied monsters and uses for frenzy crystals. then again this game is allergic to having elder dragons which makes all but three monsters capturable (two which are one time story fights) which definitely doesn’t cheapen the endgame at all so maybe we’ll never see shagaru. who knows.
also maybe it’s for the best we don’t get more frenzied monsters until a future update when they fix how frenzy works because again, frenzied monsters are the weakest monsters in the game, and are essentially glass canons minus the canon. literally just the monster with less health, the ability to inflict (a very weakened version of) the frenzy, and nothing more.
idk lemme know if i’m stupid or if anyone else is bothered by this.

To anyone who is interested, here is my thoughts on Nosferatu (2024). In briefest sum: it's not my thing. I didn't really like it by large.
To be a little longer, but still remain mostly spoiler-free: There are several elements running throughout the movie. There's stuff taken directly from the original Nosferatu, there's stuff added in from Dracula, and there's also some elements that appear to me to be informed by other adaptations or reputation, as well as more modern tastes in the way horror movies operate. It is definitely still a horror, and for people who like this style of horror, I think a lot of them would enjoy it. Personally, I'm not super into gore or sexual horror scenes. There are definitely several of both. In general I like more subtle psychological horror, and in a lot of ways I think this movie is pretty in-your-face about what it does. That is a personal preference for me, though, and definitely not universal.
Also, while I find the combination of elements interesting, in several places I personally feel like it weakens characterization or at least my interest in the characters. That said, some character things that fans of Dracula like would probably include: Orlock is definitely still evil/hated by all. Thomas and Ellen (the Harker figures) are in love, and both protagonists we're meant to root for. There are also a lot of added scenes that call back to various events in the book. On the other hand, there is some degree of Ellen/Orlock that is likely a major turnoff for a lot of people, and also Friedrich (the Arthur figure) is definitely not our Art. Also, many of the callback scenes involve similar events, but almost inevitably twisted in some way, either to fit the changed place in the plot, the different characters, or to feed in to horror scenes that are more gory/sexual than you'd see in either original book or movie.
Finally, more specific spoilers under the cut:
Sorry in advance but this is more of a ramble than any specific progression throughout the plot.
I think that the story wanted to have its cake and eat it too a little bit in regards to the original book, the original film, and to pop-culture derived interpretations of Dracula themes and characters. I also think there was a degree of playing in to more typical modern horror expectations. Some of my thoughts on this are pretty suppositional because I don't actually like watching horror movies much and also haven't seen any film adaptations of Dracula (aside from the original Nosferatu and now this one). So feel free to disregard me if I'm wrong on any of those points. But I feel like there are several scenes that either alter events or add in gratuitous nudity or violence just because that's expected.
Like, for example, when Thomas arrives in the town near the castle. There's a whole odd scene where a bunch of people are dancing around and then kind of mocking him before he gets into the inn. Once there, we have a scene more like in the original movie (OM from here on out) where there's horrified reaction to him saying he's going to the castle, and also similar to the original book (OB) where he is given a crucifix. Then we have a scene that seems like a "queer dreams" reference (but when he wakes his shoes are muddy showing it really happened) where he follows a bunch of locals leading a naked virgin on a horse to a grace where they then stake a vampire. I think this is the same group who were outside the inn mocking him, though I'm not totally sure.
The staking scene irked me more in hindsight because it seemed to be suggesting a possible alternate ending, with the virgin potentially 'distracting' the monster's attention while its body was staked. I kind of wondered near the end if this was going to happen to some extent with Ellen taking out the shadow and Orlock's spirit while the men staked his physical body. Now, that too would be off from both originals and was entirely my own theory so it not being fulfilled isn't really a knock on the movie, but... While I guess we can see the connection here, the actual way the whole "pure woman offers herself to the vampire to kill it" plays out later has nothing really to do with this scene. So it still feels kind of like there was no point having her there, since all she did was ride naked on a horse, and so it felt more contrived to show a boob than really relevant to me. The people also are weird because of this. Are they in Orlock's employ and scornful of Thomas? Are they opposed to vampires and want to protect him? There's a weird mix, only increased when everyone is gone when he awakes (including the innkeepers) and have stolen his horse. I didn't feel like their behavior made sense.
OrlocI did like several of the trippy bits about Thomas' journey to the castle (though the empty carriage reminded me more of Curse of Strahd, haha), and some of the parts of him being there. The scenes where he is eating with Orlock and where he's being pressured into signing a contract he can't read are pretty good moments of him having to try and keep calm and polite while freaking out hugely internally, though it's all much more condensed and quick to become blatant attacks on him than the OB. But that itself is more similar to the OM. The scene when Orlock makes him say "my lord" instead of "sir" is pretty funny. I also quite liked the way Orlock turned his excuse to leave ("I've been having horrible dreams since getting here, I think I'm ill") against him into a reason he must stay ("It's not good to travel when you're sick, you must stay here until you get better"). From the book, we get scenes like Thomas asking about local traditions and being shut down, running frantically about after learning he's trapped, being threatened by wolves, and escaping out the window. But the way it happens is typically very different, with Orlock just having some wolves in his crypt apparently. Thomas going in there and opening up the coffin to see him isn't really led up to in any way, other than him running around searching for an exit. We do get an attempted shoveling, except it's not a shovel but a pickaxe, there's no apparent reason for it to be sitting there, and Orlock (who apparently sleeps totally naked) physically repels the blow and then chases after him/shadows him and then drinks him while also humping him. He wakes up in his bed afterwards, and escapes out the window while fleeing wolves that have been sent to attack him after Orlock (presumably) leaves. Then he falls into the river.
I think in general his character is closest to the equivalent OB character. He loves his wife intensely, and is determined to return to her and to protect her/kill the vampire who harmed her. There are still some really unfortunate moments where he tells her to ignore her creepy dreams and basically be normal (as well as disregarding her warnings not to leave, though that at least I seem to remember happening in the OM), and he's the one to say of course she'll be left behind when hunting vampires. But he never seems to think about leaving her, and definitely loves her a lot throughout. I also like him getting a limp after his escape from the castle, showing some lingering physical effect. Though he also apparently has bite marks since he shows them to people later on.
Von Franz is shown to be more lost in his 'crazy' theories than Van Helsing. He also is too willing to sacrifice others, and kind of has a crazy monologue while setting a bunch of stuff on fire which feels super out of character. But he plays a smaller part and I liked both him not being shown as a super vampire hunter (the one scene when Friedrich asks him how to kill the demon he's talking about and he's just like "I dunno, I've never actually seen one of these before" was funny) and him having respect for Ellen. He insists she not be tied up and empathizes with her psychic nature being preyed upon, being clear that the results are not her fault. Dr. Siever plays a really small role, and Knock (the Hawkins/Renfield medley) is just as comically evil as he is in the OM. He does get naked in a pentagram and gnaw on animals/people onscreen, but doesn't have a huge role. I had fun laughing at Orlock carrying his own coffin in the original but sadly no luck in that regard thanks to Knock escaping to help him.
Friedrich irks me the most because he's got a larger role and it's so different from Arthur. While Emma (Lucy) doesn't do too much, she's at least still a good friend to Ellen. He clearly doesn't like her from the start and just kind of puts up with her weirdness because of other people. He's a loving husband and father and that's where the most sympathy for him comes in, but also skeptic who hates the influence on his life that Ellen brings and has a hard time believing Von Franz about supernatural causes. While Siever apparently suggested it in the first place, he still is the one who approves tying Ellen up, and he's a jerk to her about her not being normal and not doing what he tells her. Not to mention kicking the Hutters out in the middle of a plague! As well as trying to flee when his wife is already suffering from the plague. He does traumatically lose his whole family, and he gets the shadow keeping him asleep while his children were killed, which originally happened to Jonathan while Mina was attacked. The scene of the nosferatu carelessly dropping a dead child reminded me of vampire!Lucy tossing aside a child in the graveyard. And in fact, having Emma be the only one awake rushing about to try and save her family and having to face the vampire alone is sort of similar to the night of Lucy's memorandum if you squint. I absolutely hated Friedrich's ending - he's visibly caught the plague and wanders off to the graveyard where he then has sex with his dead (not undead, just dead) wife and then dies doing so? Euch. If they just left out the necrophilia then it would feel much more coherent to his character, just kind of selfish and very intentionally 'normal' but still deeply loving his family and losing it after their loss. But that just seemed kind of thrown in there to add to the erotic horror to me, and since I don't like it, well. I didn't like it.
Ellen, now... it's hard to talk about her character in this without also talking about Orlock. But let me start with just her and then get to that after. They lean way in on the psychic Ellen from the OM, which I initially quite liked. She also seems to deeply love Thomas, though there are some later scenes that add a weird dynamic there. One being she only became 'normal' when she met him, and so he seems kind of like an escape from her psychic dreads. I initially really liked her connection to him when he was on his trip. She gave him a token of her hair in a locket, which she cut while staring psychically out into the night, and it seemed like it was linking her to him. Then, when Orlock took the locket, the connection seemed to contribute with her sometimes overlapping with Orlock in a way I initially thought was kind of cool. I really liked the way the actress did her own version of the clawed hands and the Orlock walk/silhouette, she embodied that really well.
The sexualized trances/dreams and seizures were definitely not to my taste thought, and the whole more Exorcist-style scenes where she seemed almost outright possessed didn't really make full sense to me most of the time. I really disliked what the story behind them and her connection to Orlock ended up being. Apparently she psychically reached out to something dark in her lonely youth and ended up waking him/making some sort of marriage pact with him? This is what aroused his interest in her all along and seemed to drive many of his actions. And while we do see that she hates him consciously, and outright rejects and insults him to his face in one scene, there's all this stuff where she seems very drawn to him despite that. I really hated the Hutton sex scene. It was bound up in an argument between them during which she seemed to at least partially believe Orlock's words about Thomas selling her (this was apparently the contract he couldn't read but signed because Orlock was menacing him) for a bag of gold. She also throws in his face that he's never satisfied her like her dream lover (the nosferatu). She seems to be getting partially possessed or something throughout this fight. She takes on the nosferatu posture and uses a different voice, but it's not made clear how much of this is some influence against her or her own inner darkness or her actual thoughts. Thomas looks scared of/for her and also freaked out by how crazy she seems, and then she crawls up to him begging for no doctor and then they have aggressive sex while she commands him to kiss her heart. That in particular makes it seem like she's trying to emulate her dream sex with the nosferatu, since he's always shown to bit the chest/over the heart. So that left a bit of a nasty taste in my mouth.
Again, we do see that she loves Thomas and wants to save him. But the eroticization of the vampire feeding (once again, they are clearly having sex while he drinks her blood. The only reason I wasn't a hundred percent sure this happened with Thomas is because he at least was wearing clothes thought Orlock was naked at the time) combined with the visual horror of making Orlock look so open-wound and corpsey combined to have a really weird feel of just wanting to show a woman having sex with a horrible monster. The sexual horror thing... but she agreed to it, yes as a plan to kill Orlock, but what with the dreams thing and her making sex noises and whatnot it kind of seems like she's enjoying it too. Then when they find her body there's this kind of weird detail where she has a hand holding Orlock to her chest (she drew him back down and asked him to drink more blood when he started to notice the onset of dawn) and Thomas takes her other hand, and it feels symbolic somehow. Her lover being death and her husband reaching out for her but her clinging death closer... I dunno. The whole sex and dream connection/prolonged haunting aspect made it seem a lot less resigned sacrifice than it did in the OM, and definitely way more of her being drawn to him in return than in the OB.
Orlock himself was a pretty nice mix of Dracula and OM Count for most of it I think. I liked when he called himself nothing but hunger, it feels like it leaned in more to his OM counterpart. Using Thomas's fate against her (and before that, the Hardings) was very much something OB Dracula would do too. But his whole past with Ellen and consequent fixation on her kind of took over everything he did. And since I didn't like that element... I did love the shadow stuff, and enjoyed when he did the classic nosferatu walk with the hands reaching out, though it wasn't as often. His design was definitely creepy as well.
I liked the plague elements. I also liked the shadow of the vampire, and kind of wish there had been more emphasis put on that. I feel like in the OM, more horror was shown in his movements and his physicality partially just due to the medium. But it was also really iconic, especially the shadow, and I liked the instances when it was used to reflect his influence.
Not a fan of all the thrashing about (sexually and also just seizing/shaking) and drooling/vomiting/blood spilling from mouths. But those are more personal preference and again feel like more modern horror staples to various degrees. My biggest grief is the Orlock/Ellen stuff and how that infects other things around it.
BUT... if you like this sort of story, as I imagine many do, and if you are able to see it as its own thing enough not to get upset with the divergences (for example Orlock/Ellen, or Friedrich vs. Arthur) then I think a lot of people would enjoy this movie.
#nosferatu 2024#nosferatu critical#not totally negative but as i say not my thing and i give reasons why#so if you loved it probably you'd prefer to skip this post

Books of 2024: October Wrap-Up.
Gr8 news: I am no longer very far behind on my NaNo prep reading!! I had to drop JUST LIKE HOME (reread) and HOUSE OF LEAVES, but I got through the rest of my Haunted House and/or Aliens and/or Parasite/Fungus TBR. Here they all are!
Photos and/or reviews linked:
SHRIEK - ★★★★ I think SHRIEK Is my favorite volume of the Ambergris trilogy, taken as a whole--the one-way conversation Duncan was having with Janice was a really neat narrative choice, and then the reveal in the Afterword's Afterword was, in true VanderMeer fashion, mind-blowing.
FINCH - ★★★★ I was actually surprised by how much I liked this one. It helped me figure out a LOT about what kinds of power dynamics I enjoy in borderline-dystopian fiction, and what intrigues me most about limited agency. It wrapped the story up almost too neatly, for a VanderMeer, but I did still have a good time and blitzed through it quickly. Given this one and SHRIEK, I'm counting the Whole Series as a Four-Star read--I'd like to reread it someday, now that I know what's going on.
LEECH - ★★★★★ (reread) STILL ONE OF MY ALL-TIME FAVES, OFFICIALLY!! It's very gothic and heavy and fucked up, but it does FASCINATING things with POV, and worldbuilding, and storytelling frameworks. PLEASE check the content warnings, but if none of those are hard no's for you, definitely pick this one up. I suspect anyone for whom Animorphs was a Formative Influence will adore this (but so far my sample size is really only 1)--please prove me right.
A HOUSE WITH GOOD BONES - ★★★½ This was fun! Not my favorite Kingfisher (that award still goes to HOLLOW PLACES), but I had a good time--I laughed, I squealed over vultures, I blasted through pages to get to the end.
STARLING HOUSE - ★★★★ Alix E. Harrow always manages to write exactly my catnip, somehow. Maybe it's the ADHD, but I'm constantly finding connections to my own writing projects in her work, and STARLING HOUSE was no exception! I liked that this one was more modern, and the sibling dynamic was precious, and I love weird sentient houses where space is more of a suggestion than a hard and fast rule. I'll probably reread this one for Driscoll purposes!
WOODWORM - ★★★½ So much rage in such a tiny volume, and I was Absolutely Here For It. I don't tend to read much lit fic, but I do try to read a lot in translation, and I thought this one did very cool stuff with Spanish--the prose felt natural in English, but I loved the linguistic details the translators left in Spanish and how much depth that added. I feel like this one might be a good fit for Carmen Maria Machado fans, too.
HOW TO SELL A HAUNTED HOUSE - ★★★ Call this a low 3, from me. It was Fine, I guess. I liked what he did with the act structure (labeling parts as stages of grief was very cool), and I liked the family dynamics and history, but a lot of the humor didn't land for me (I got a few sensible chuckles, but a bunch of it wasn't funny), and the "oh this author is A Man, huh" moments made me roll my eyes (seriously: Who thinks about their ~breasts~ when an angry taxidermied squirrel is clawing down your shirt?? No One With Breasts, Mr. Dude). This book did at least teach me that I'm not really interested in gore (it's just boring, unlike body horror, my beloved). I might still pick up HORRORSTOR, but I probably won't look into most of his other stuff, if this one is indicative of his general style. Meh.
THE ART OF EXCESS - No rating (didn't read the whole thing). At the end of ALWAYS COMING HOME, Richard Powers mentioned this book as the reason he finally committed to ALWAYS, so I was curious what this Tom Leclair dude had to say about it back in 1989. I had a heck of a time tracking down a copy (it's very out of print, and my local library had to source it from the Library of Congress for me), but I didn't want to buy it to read just the preface/intro/epilogue, because I haven't read any of the other texts he analyzes. Leclair's style was very readable, and I was intrigued by his framework, but I found some of his conclusions eye-rolly, given his sample size. I posted this one because I think Library of Congress books are fun, but I didn't add it to my Goodreads.
BLACK TIDE - ★★★½ This one had me rolling my eyes in the first couple chapters, and I was afraid I wasn't going to like it, but once Fucked Up Shit Started Happening, the momentum really picked up and didn't stop--I blitzed through it way past my bedtime on a school night. It was fucked up and weird and tense and bloody pull-no-punches horror, but it ALSO made me laugh, and I loved our two fuck-ups surviving the apocalypse together. NOTE: Dogs (and Gulls) Are Not Safe, and the cast is small enough that it matters a lot :( if you can't stomach animal harm/death, skip this.
A HALF-BUILT GARDEN - 81/338 pages read; will report back. Enjoying it so far! Glad I put it on my NaNo prep reading list, though not quite for the reasons I planned--the reflections on motherhood as well as parenting outside the binary have been interesting, so far (and that's relevant for my own haunted house endeavors!). A much gentler ride than BLACK TIDE, and the immersive tech reminds me of Murderbot's world, just Earthbound.
Overall! Fabulous month for reading! Anytime I think "wow I need A Break™ from writing or life," this is the type of reading I mean--where I can spend a couple weeks annihilating books within a day to Refill the Words Reservoir.
Under the Cut: A Note About ~*★Stars★*~
Historically, I have been Very Bad™ about assigning things Star Ratings, because it's so Vibes Heavy for me and therefore Contingent Upon my Whims. I am refining this as I figure out my wrap up posts (epiphany of last month: I don't like that stars are Odd, because that makes three the midpoint and things are rarely so truly mid for me)(I have hacked my way around this with a ½). Here is, generally, how I conceptualize stars:
★ - This was Bad. I would actively recommend that you do NOT read this one, no redeeming qualities whatsoever, not worth the slog. Save Yourself, It's Too Late For Me. Book goes in the garbage (donate bin).
★★ - This was Not Good. I would not recommend it, but it wasn't a total waste or wash--something in here held my interest/kept my attention/sparked some joy. I will not be rereading this ever. Save Yourself (Or Join Me In Suffering, That Seems Like A Cool Bonding Activity).
★★★ - This was Good/Fine/Okay/Meh. I don't care about this enough to recommend it one way or another. Perfectly serviceable book, held my interest, I probably enjoyed myself (or at least didn't actively loathe the reading). I don't have especially strong feelings. You probably don't need to save yourself from this one--if it sounds like your jam, give it a shot! Just didn't resonate with me particularly powerfully. I probably won't reread this unless I'm after something in particular.
★★★½ - I liked this! I'll probably recommend it if I know it matches someone's vibes or specific requests, but I didn't commit to a star rating on Goodreads. More likely to reread, but not guaranteed.
★★★★ - I really enjoyed this!! I would recommend it (sometimes with caveats about content warnings or such--I tend to like weird fucked up funny shit, and I don't have many hard readerly NO's). Not a perfect book for me by any means, but Very Good. This is something I would reread! Join me!!
★★★★★ - I LOVED THE SHIT OUT OF THIS, IT REWIRED MY BRAIN, WILL RECOMMEND TO ANYONE AND EVERYONE AT THE SLIGHTEST PROVOCATION (content warning caveats still apply--see 4-star disclaimer). Excellent book, I'll reread it regularly, I'll buy copies for all my friends, I'll try to convince all of Booklr to read it, PLEASE join me!!

A small vent about marble hornets and creepypasta becoming a recent trend
Tw for description of psychosis, gore description
Read if you wish, if not just enjoy the gifs
Marble hornets is on its 15th year anniversary this year and because of this it's resurfaced and there's a wave of new age fans that enjoy the web show and have delved deeper into creepypasta lore as well as the slenderverse. On a normal person level I have no issues with this. I don't believe In gatekeeping analogue horror from back in my time from today's generation, especially something as good as marble hornets.
My issue is this (Trauma dump incoming) : from the age of 7 I was suffering deep psychosis as a result of using creepypasta and marble hornets as a way of coping with trauma and the stress I was under with neglect and having to look after my sick parent and having no healthy friendship in school. Yes, I was one of those kids who wished with all their hearts that the slenderman would come and take them away and make their problems disappear. The problem was I wanted it too much so my brain just made it happen. I was suffering from really bad derealisation as well as auditory and visual hallucinations of the characters. They would talk and interact with me, just not in the way I wanted them too. I remember so vividly washing up after dinner one night and seeing laughing jack break through the door and stab me in the stomach. I remember watching as my stomach and intestine dropped out of my body as he picked them up and swallowed them by the handful while still managing to maniacally laugh in my face. I screamed until my dad came in and told me jokingly to shut up, clearly not seeing my distress.
These hallucinations impacted my social life too. It was clear to me that there was a handful of them that were not out to get me and wouldn't hurt me if I played along with them. The most normal thing I had to do was just not ignore them. I hallucinated ticci toby a lot, especially in public. I had learned that if I didn't talk back to him he would get agitated and I would have nightmares of the slenderman murdering me so I would always talk back. This made going out with friends difficult because I had to respond to him no matter what. This lead to a lot of bullying from my friends and not many people wanting to talk to me.
For years, until I was 12, I kept slipping through the narrative I was either schizophrenic or actually one of the followers of the slenderman (I used to call myself a proxy, now the word makes me feel physically ill). This belief is probably what made the hallucinations last as long as they did. I wasn't aware at the time how deep in psychosis I was as I refused to talk to my parents about it in detail as my mum used to threaten to take me to a mental hospital as a small child when I used my imagination and said I could see a butterfly, for example, that wasn't really there. My sister knew and so did her friend but I'm sure they both thought it was some game.
So, I'm speaking in the past tense. This is behind me, right? Well, it was for a good few years. I was able to do this via limiting myself all access to anything creepypasta related or marble hornets related which was very hard because it was like my safety blanket for so many years. I tried to not put myself in rooms alone without music or something playing in the background so I can concentrate on that and not give anything the chance to harm me. When I did hallucinate I would take videos to prove to myself nobody was there and in time I was able to ignore them completely and the eventually went away. This took about a year or so of discipline and I think it only worked because it was psychosis and not schizophrenia.
However, the reason I'm talking about this now is it's all come back to me. I'm hallucinating again, I'm being hurt again and I'm unable to sleep properly because of the nightmares that plague me due to it. The reason is very clear to me. Media consumption has caused me to relapse. My girlfriend is obsessed with marble hornets and won't stop showing me stuff about it, which is totally fine because she shows me things she likes out of love. However, when I open Tumblr after it's full of marble hornets and creepypasta. It's the same story for other social media. I'm totally okay with people enjoying the fandom and I'm okay with seeing it from time to time but I do feel so bombarded with it all that's it's triggered me into psychosis yet again. And the way people enjoy this media isn't making me feel any more comfortable online either. You cannot imagine what it's like seeing IRLs of monsters that's harmed you physically and mentally roleplaying and twinkifying the character like the character hasn't killed people or tortured people in their source. I can't stand people simping over Tim from marble hornets after I've repeatedly been assaulted and tormented by a figment of my imagination with the exact same face. Having Jeff the killers bloody and broken face sting like a fresh wound in salt over my eyes when I fall asleep seems like a complete contrast to the hot fuckboy version that people put in their pfps and dirty talk on character ai. I'm not saying you can't be thirsty for a man with no eyelids, my point is it's really strange from my point of view.
Now that you've listened to my rant I just want to make it absolutely clear that if you enjoy marble hornets or creepypasta or the slenderverse you have all the right to keep loving that media. I don't want to put people off or make it seem like I'm trying to gatekeep. I do just want to share a very brief overview of my experience with this media and how it's affected me in hopes it might prevent someone else from going through something similar. This is also a reminder for all horror fans to take a break once in a while to cleanse yourself of all violence and fear for a while and look at some positive media to rest your brain once in a while.
I doubt anyone would be interested in hearing more about my experience with psychosis but if you are ill gladly talk more about it. I'm going to do everything I can to overcome this unwanted sequel and I will over come out weather social media and the people around me let me or not. I've done this before and I'll do it again.

what would squilliam and shoehorn think of the stab movies?
So in-universe they're considered kind of bad and trashy when they come out, and from what we see they play in to a lot of the cheesy slasher tropes that scream subverts (ex. turning Casey's death into a shower scene for no reason). Later on in the franchise we find out they've developed a cult following, and from what we see of them on screen they're very campy. There's lots of movies IRL that follow this pattern going from bomb to cult classic: Dead Alive, The Thing, Slither, Phantom of the Paradise, ect, ect.
We also know that at least the first 3 Stab movies are directed by Robert Rodriguez who is a real (and kind of awesome) director known for stuff like From Dusk Till Dawn, Spy Kids, Machete, Sin City, and Planet Terror. I genuinely like a lot of his work but its pretty over the top, over campy, silly, fun so I think that gives us a sense of how those first three Stab movies feel.
We also know that Stab 8 was directed by Rian Johnson, director of Knives Out, Glass Onion, and the TV show Poker Face- all stuff that can have a bit of a lighter tone, not devoid of camp, but generally movies that take themselves a little more seriously. To illustrate the difference between these guys I could imagine Rian Johnson actually directing a modern Scream movie, but I can't really see Robert Rodriguez doing the same. This is far from an insult to Robert Rodriguez by the way, I just think his style is better suited to other stuff. So I think probably the later Stab movies feel a bit more like the Scream movies, while the earlier ones exist in a different media space.
To recap, based on what we see in the Scream movies, Stab is a bit cheesy and trashy, pretty campy, but they do ultimately develop an audience later on. So far, this sounds like something Stu would be into tbh, I think he likes the silly stuff as much as the really fucked up stuff, and the fact that its based on his own story would be hilarious to him. Like he would find it so fucking funny that they inserted a random shower scene in for Casey, and he would find his own portrayal by Vince Vaughn to be hilarious.
Billy is another story. I do think that Billy can enjoy a sillier slasher, especially if it has other stuff going for it (eg. gore, creative kills ect, insane body horror), but he can't buy in to the same amount of ridiculousness as Stu can. Beyond that there's the fact that the Stab movies are a bastardization of his story, like Billy already considers the massacre his movie, so the Stab movies are a bad remake to him. I think especially the idea that his killings aren't being taken seriously would aggravate him.
And then there's the fact that he's played by Luke Wilson. And like. Listen. I don't have anything against Luke Wilson, I know very little about him but I know Billy Wouldn't be happy about this:

Honestly I don't know who they could have cast as Billy that wouldn't have pissed him off. I think that as much as he would want the notoriety of his story being adapted into a movie, he would functionally enjoy being portrayed by someone else.
In the context of my writing, where he and Stu survive this is especially true because the Stab movies in Debaserverse will have Billy and Stu as final boys. Realistically this means they'll be shoved into tropey archetypes, a number of which Billy would hate for himself.
Stab is absolutely going to come into play in WoM by the way! I won't go into much detail about that right now but let it be known. There will be Stab.

So I'm considering getting into Malevolent. Is there anything I should know before I get into it (content warnings etc)?
your 'to shreds, you say' out of context post has Intrigued me.
Hi!! I'm happy to sing the praises of malevolent. It balances genuine horror with sincere explorations of friendship, hope, and redemption. I think it's very funny without undercutting the scares or the heart. The characters are super well fleshed out. The soundtrack is killer and the production value is very high (starts decent enough and gets better as the seasons progress). And it's all written, edited, acted, and produced by one guy! That being said, there's definitely some things worth knowing before going in. I tried to list some of the prominent potential triggers without being too spoilery:
Child endangerment and death (nothing happens "on screen" so to speak but it's a prominent topic of discussion)
Suicidal ideation
Toxic relationships* (*there's some pretty abusive language that gets hurled around. I'm hesitant to use this label because the way relationships develop and people change is one of THE central concerns of the story. There's subtlety and nuance to how it's handled, but if you're not comfortable hearing tense and angry arguments this show will probably not work for you)
Gore, violence, and extreme injury (the audio effects can be rough if you're squeamish like me, but I manage. Expect a lot of squishing and crunching)
Body horror (sort of an extension of the previous bullet. Run-ins with the supernatural often leave a mark. As someone who really dislikes body horror in general, I think it's pretty benign here, but YMMV. Also there's thematic exploration of loss of autonomy)
I think I captured the main ones, but it's possible I missed something. Any other malevolent fans can feel free to chime in. The episodes release once a month, and I've been tuning in for about 2 years without a relisten, so it's hard for me to remember what's going on plot-wise sometimes tbh. If you have any specific concerns you want to ask about, please feel free to DM me!! And PLEASE let me know your thoughts if you decide to listen. I hope this helps 💛
#also from one apocalyte to another: malevolent is how i found the apoc players!#it's what introduced me to the lovecraft mythos (beyond the general pop culture knowledge i had). i got hooked and went looking for more#so i think you'll like it :) also i know you're a tma/tmagp fan and there's some significant crossover between the fanbases#this show makes me insane in the best way. i usually end up listening during my commute#and im sure people have seen me screaming in my car like a madwoman. wouldnt have it any other way

The Manor Residents and Horror Movies
Talking about what kind of horror movies each of the characters like and why
Toby is someone that mainly just wants to have a good time. To him, a horror movie doesn’t even have to be scary in order for it to be good, it just needs to at least be entertaining. That’s why he tends to lean towards your classic slashers and has enjoyed that small wave of horror comedy movies we got a few years back.
- Favorite movies: Scream and The Babysitter
______________
Tim prefers horror movies that give you an uneasy feeling rather than outright scaring you. He goes for the movies that gives him a sense of dread and will leave him staying awake at night not because he’s scared but because he can’t stop thinking about it.
- Favorite movies: Skinamarink and Creep
___________
Most people would say that Brian is kind of a freak when it comes to horror movies because he likes the blood and guts and gore, but there’s a decent reason for it. He is someone who almost never gets scared, so most horror movies end up being pretty dull. That’s why he turns to the ones that have the most creative kills because the over the top manner is borderline comical for him.
- Favorite Movie: Terrifier
__________________
Jeff loves a good mystery more than anything, so he enjoys horror movies that really get his brain turning trying to figure out what is even happening. He loves it more when movies need that second viewing and all the small details he missed the first time come together.
- Favorite Movie: Get Out
__________________
Ben doesn’t really care for horror movies unless they tie into a special interest of theirs be it video games or general tech heavy movies. This leads to them really liking the blend of horror and sci-fi.
- Favorite Movies: Possessor and The Invisible Man (2020)
________________
Natalie is a little weird when it comes to horror. She likes challenging herself with the over the top shit. The stuff that would reach the bottom of those disturbing movie icebergs, but at the same time she doesn’t like mindless torture. She prefers disturbing movies that still tell a story over exploitation for the sake of exploitation. After all, she is an artist that loves to find meaning in some of the more disturbed content.
- Favorite Movie: V/H/S/94: The Subject
___________________
Jack isn’t really picky when it comes to horror movies. He just likes anything that tells a good story. He really likes books, and movies are like audiobooks to him since he can’t really watch them. Tell an interesting story, and he’ll be hooked.
- Favorite Movies: Midsommar and The Strangers
_________________
Jane loves a good, campy, over the top, ridiculous, fun horror movie. Horror movies that are actually scary are just such a downer to her. She wants mindless fun to turn to in order to relax after singlehandedly keeping the manor residents alive. She also just likes watching something as dramatic as her.
- Favorite Movies: Bodies Bodies Bodies and Cabin in the Woods
__________________
Nina talks a big game when it comes to horror movies, saying she can handle anything when she’s really a massive wimp. Despite being a true crime girlie (derogatory), the spectacles of horror movies like jump scares and suspenseful music freak her out. It’s probably why the only ones she can really handle are those subtle horror mockumentaires as they purposely mimic the style of all those true crime documentaries she likes to watch.
- Favorite Movie: Banned from Broadcast: Saiko! The Large Family
___________________
For obvious reasons, Sally can’t watch a lot of horror movies, but it hasn’t stopped her from trying. By trying I mean that she watches a lot of cartoon Halloween specials because she thinks that those count as horror.
- Favorite movie: Scary Godmother
____________________
Slender is a fan of the classics, and I mean the classics. Like black and white, super old school, really not all that scary by today standards. Frankly speaking, newer forms of technology freak him out as much as it fascinates him. He still barely has texting down, so when it comes to really any kind of movie, he’ll go for the old ones to relax with. They provide comfort to his overly anxious self.
- Favorite Movie: Frankenstein (1931)

No new chapter of the Byler Isekai Fantasy AU today because I need way longer for edits than I thought, plus I think I just really need to overthink my posting schedule, BUT in the meantime I'd like to inform you that I already have a long, multichaptered Byler Fantasy AU complete up on Ao3. Just in case you didn't know yet and want something similar to tide you over until I get around to posting again next week.
Through A Dark Glass, Wanting
90k | Rated M | Fantasy AU, D&D inspired AU, Canon Typical Horror, Blood and Gore, Body Horror, Suicidal Ideation, Friends to Lovers, Slow Burn, Will Byers is so loved if he only accepted it, Will keeps making bad decisions bear with him
When a dark corruption spreads from the Deep Woods north of the kingdom of Roane, it falls to Will and his friends to investigate the cause. But as they close in on what seems to be the inevitable final confrontation with the Mad Wizard they have been fighting for years, Will finds his magic failing him as the darkness that scarred him during his first encounter with that very man finally overtakes him. Will stands no chance at stopping the demons that have been haunting him – after all how can he fight for a happy ending when he doesn’t believe he deserves one? - Or, Will learns to accept that his friends love him a whole lot more than he thinks they should.
I wrote this one during last year's Byler Big Bang, so it has a lot of wonderful art by the extremely talented @katimanki, and since I really enjoyed working on it I want to give it some love today (also because the next BBB is just around the corner - yay!). I'll definitely be back with the next chapter of the Isekai AU next week, but also be warned that I'm probably going to stick to a three week posting schedule for the last couple of chapters. I very much over/underestimated how long this bad boy would be and how much time I would be able to spend on it, so while I don't like it, it is now what it is.
An excerpt and my usual taglist below (since I'm assuming you might be interested in another fantasy AU as well)
Chapter 1: The Inn at the End of the World
Will spends dinner staring at the dark clouds obscuring the woods less than a days ride away from the inn. Night has already begun falling around them, but the clouds hovering over the trees almost glow a little in the dark, as if to make sure he remembers that they are there. Inside of the clouds he can see the tree tops and dark spots of creatures flying. General consensus is that the Deep Woods are a dead place, but he knows that’s not true. Whatever the shadow touches doesn’t die. It just wishes it had.
An elbow hits him in the ribs, for the second time in as many minutes. It’s only on the second time, though, that he realizes the elbow is intentional – for once this evening.
“Byers, you gonna finish that or not?” Dustin says, wiping his mouth while also eyeing the bread on Will’s plate.
Will wordlessly pushes his plate – the only plate on the table that isn’t completely blank – over to his friend.
Immediately he feels Mike’s knee knock into his, and silently curses the inn for being so packed that they had to squeeze four of them onto a bench made for three. Even with Lucas hanging half off it, leaning over to chat with Max, it’s a tight fit. Too tight. And Dustin’s elbow is nothing compared to Mike’s…well, Mike’s everything.
He can feels Mike’s hot breath on his cheek when he speaks. “Are you okay?”
Will puts on a practiced smile. “I’m fine,” he reassures his best friend. He nods at the window behind Mike’s head. “Just not really feeling hungry right now.”
Mike follows his gaze and sighs. “Just make sure to have breakfast, okay?”
“Yeah, yeah. I know. We need our strength.”
Mike returns Will’s eye roll with a tight smile.
Will grabs the half eaten chicken leg from his plate and takes a tentative bite to appease him. Mike, apparently satisfied that Will’s not gonna drop dead of starvation before they even set foot in the woods, turns back to whatever conversation he was having with El on his other side. Will drops the chicken again and grabs a napkin instead.
Dustin pushes the now more empty plate towards the middle of the table. He has eaten maybe half of what Will had left over, leaving the chicken leg and the harder parts of the bread.
He pats his stomach. “Tiamat’s Third head, I’m full.”
“That’s still not gonna catch on,” Will tells him.
Dustin gives him the finger. Then he belches.
Will decidedly turns his nose out of the path, staring instead at the crowd around them. The inn, a small affair just on the border between the Duchy of Hawkins and the impenetrable Deep Woods, is teeming with people. At first Mike had been worried they wouldn’t even get rooms, but that was the one thing The Aleful Dragon had not been short of. They could each have gotten their own, but instead they’d gone for their usual three: One double for the girls, two for the boys. Officially.
Will eyes the tankard in front of Dustin, silently hoping it will stay at that one but knowing that since this is their last proper night in civilization, it won’t. And unfortunately, unlike Mike, Dustin snored when he was drunk.
The innkeeper’s son comes to clear away their table, shyly ducking his head as he does so. In his eyes there is the recognition that had become more and more common over the past two years. This is the Prince of Hearts, Slayer of the Thessalian Hydra and Scourge of the Mad Wizard. This is no ordinary band of would-be heroes at his table.
To everyone’s surprise, it is Dustin whom he addresses when he brings them the round of beers they order as he clears the table.
“You are Dustin the Bold, right?” When Dustin nods he swallows and asks in a quiet voice: “Would you mind if I asked my mother if you could play tonight? We have our house musicians, but…”
Dustin’s grin is wolfish. “Do I ever mind that, my young friend? Tell her I will play all night if she only keeps the beer coming.”
Will doesn’t bother pointing out that the innkeeper's son seems to be a few years older than them, actually. Dustin’s flame is lit and he doesn’t think their bard will hear much tonight that doesn’t pertain to song requests.
The young man runs off happily to tell his mother the news, and sure enough she herself comes to their table to negotiate the deal. It’s a standard contract as far as the work of a bard goes: The drink will be on the house for him and his companions. The rooms they still have to pay for.
It means hell for Will’s ears, but he supposes he can always go to bed early, perhaps be deeply asleep by the time the snoring starts. Considering how long Dustin plans on playing and drinking, he might do that anyway.
Dustin gets up as the innkeeper heads back to the bar. He makes a big show of having to get out of the booth, shooing Lucas and Max into a frenzy. That still doesn’t seem fast enough because he just climbs up on the table to leave it in the end. It’s either some eerie talent or everyone else’s quick reflexes that mean he doesn’t spill any ale as he crosses.
“Sir Michael, my lute if you please?”
Mike looks up at him, rolling his eyes. “Get your dirty boots of the table, Dustin.”
Dustin lifts his chin in defiance. “My lute, I said.”
Will sees how they had been identified in this nowhere inn despite their plain clothes. Even in a simple tunic, visibly mended here and there where it had gotten ripped and torn in previous battles, Dustin strikes an imposing figure. The lute that is leaning against the wall beside their booth could be the prized possession of a simple minstrel, but the confident set of Dustin’s shoulders and the glimmer of knowledge in his eyes identify him clearly as a Bard of the Conclave. Take then his companions and even the people who had not seen Mike’s crown-and-heart shield as they carried their things upstairs were sure to know who was drinking among them.
Mike shakes his head and wordlessly hands over the richly painted instrument.
