I feel people are intentionally missing the point of this post. My issue is not that some people find my views sexist. I do not care about that. Sure I feel it makes it obvious that people aren’t actually listening to my opinions and are just slapping a label on me without understanding what I am saying; but that’s not a big deal. People like things to be black and white. I get it.
My issue is the ableist and sexist slurs I get from people who claim to be pro-woman, but will send you death threats the second you politely disagree. It is hypocritical and dehumanizing. The sad thing is, it is what I have come to expect as the norm at least half the time from the opposing party. We’re all about listening to the voices of the suffering, right up until they contradict your agenda. Then it is “sit down and shut up, retard.” And no, it is not fine just because you are also autistic.
Someone who genuinely cares about the voices of women, the voices of survivors, the voices of disabled people, lgbtqia+, etc, would be able to hear opinions they disagree with from said voices, and still remain polite. If your reaction to minorities who disagree with you is to weaponize slurs used against them, you aren’t actually pro-that minority. You are using them to further your agenda and becoming aggressive when they do not meet your expectation.
Throwing around “retarded” “bitch” “whore” and various ill wishes about my rape and potential murder, really shows your tolerant standpoint.
Me, a survivor of rape/incest, disabled, formerly impoverished, advocating for every reproductive right except abortion, accessible sterilization, comprehensive sex ed, harsh punishment for rapists, spreading awareness of the risks and dangers of abortion, wanting better for women etc etc etc.
Literally half of the prochoicers I interact with: “retarded sexist bitch.”

it’s actually crazy to me that people try to argue against abortion ?? it’s not your body!! not your choice! dont wanna have an abortion? then dont!! why do you think you get to dictate what other women do to THEIR bodies.

It’s stuff like this that proves that it’s never really been about protecting women or their rights at all, it is solely because they want the ability to murder babies to remain legal.
At that point the baby is already born. You’re not “terminating a pregnancy”, the woman is no longer pregnant. This is straight up murder any way you look at it.
It’s disgusting

In states with abortion bans, rape “exceptions”only serve to provide an ease of conscience to the men who make these laws and the people who vote for them. The nature of these laws makes it almost impossible for a rape victim to access abortion care. It’s just lip service and sympathy theater.
In Mississippi, in order for an exemption to be provided, a woman must report the crime done to her and serve the case papers to her doctor. This is a traumatic and difficult process, and many police stations only provide access to the case papers once the case is closed. This is a major barrier, because rape is almost never prosecuted appropriately in the United States, and the word of a man is always worth more than a woman’s in the eyes of the law. Most rape cases are never resolved. Also, reporting to the police can also make some domestic situations worse. (An example is given in the article).
In addition, the state often gives no guidance or provisions for the doctors, leaving them to fear that their license may be removed if they care for their patients in the “wrong” way.
And, in many southern states with these bans and exceptions for rape, no doctors are even trained in the procedure.
Rape exemptions send a message to women everywhere, and it is that pregnancy is a punishment for choosing to have sex. The only way women are allowed autonomy over their own bodies is if it was violently taken from them first.
Lawmakers will include rape exemptions in their abortion laws as a way to make them seem kind and compassionate towards women, but don’t believe them. They do not see you as an agent over your own life.

Who the fuck are you to end someone’s life “for their own good,” before they’ve even had a chance to live it? You can really see into their future and get to decide with your God-like wisdom that they’re better off dead before they’re even born? Who died and made you judge, jury, and executioner? You really look around at people in poverty, or with disabilities, and think to yourself, “damn someone should have ended them a long time ago.” What in the ever-loving arrogant audacity.

Some people claim that women use abortion as a contraceptive, and use this as an argument against legalising abortion. This has always seemed ridiculous to me, of course. It’s most likely not that common, especially now that many women use birth control (pills, spirals, etcetera). That being said, I read this one paragraph bell hooks wrote on contraceptives and it indicates something important that we need to discuss more when we talk about reproductive rights. Here’s the second half of the paragraph which I want to talk about:
”While I never had an unwanted pregnancy in the heyday of sexual liberation, many of my peers saw abortion as a better choice than conscious, vigilant use of birth control pills. And they did frequently use abortion as a means of birth control. Using the pill meant a woman was directly confronting her choice to be sexually active. Women who were more conscientious about birth control were often regarded as sexually loose by men. It was easier for some females just to let things happen sexually then take care of the ’problem’ later with abortions.” (bell hooks; Feminism is for everybody; 2015 ed.; p.27)
I was caught off-guard by hooks explicitly admitting that some women have used abortion as contraceptive. But it got me thinking. Especially this part:
”Women who were more conscientious about birth control were often regarded as sexually loose by men.”
Women are generally shamed for being sexual in ways that men are not. There’s this expectation that women are supposed to be sexually reserved, and this obviously affects women’s behaviour. Women want to preserve their dignity and social status, and so many of them don’t want to be seen as ’loose’. Pair this with the modern expectation that they are supposed to be sexually available to men outside of commited relationships (which comes from the sexual revolution and men pursuing casual sex to a greater extent than before), and we find ourselves in a tricky situation.
It is common for people to place responsibility on women not to get pregnant. Fair enough. But at the same time, people tend to ignore the other part of the equation, the people actually causing the pregnancy in the first place. Men. We often see it as natural for men to be sexual with women, and expect them to be so. This puts pressure on women to be sexual with men. Women are simultaneously shamed for having sex with men, and for rejecting sex with men. (Note that this was also true before the sexual revolution, as women were pressured into commited sexual relationships with men.)
We can’t discuss abortion without acknowledging our norms around sex. Without discussing men and what they expect from women. Without discussing how this affects women. And if we want to limit the amount of abortions, regardless of where we stand on the legality of abortion, we need to change our norms around sex quite radically.
We need to stop seeing women’s sexuality as something they should be ashamed of. Reduce the stigma of being sexually active, ’loose’, ’easy’, or however you want to call it. Women are sexual beings, too.
At the same time, people need to be more normal about women choosing not to have sex with men. (Rejecting a man is not mean, you do not need to give a man a chance, it’s okay to say no to sex in commited relationships, people need to be normal about lesbians and asexual women, etcetera.)
And we all need to recognise that ”close your legs” is not a realistic course of action for women who want to avoid pregnancy. We can’t discuss whether abortion should be legal or not without acknowledging the conditions women live under.
