Ideas for FNAF-Based Story
I’ve had this idea for probably less than a year now about making a story inspired by the Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise, as well as by Welcome to DreamWorld, a video story arch series on YouTube also inspired by FNAF made by YouTuber Rainbott, whose videos I definitely recommend checking out, as I find their story also mighty interesting.
Now, of course, this story of mine I’ve been thinking of making goes by the name of Fantazmoland, and it broadly focuses on one of the founders of this theme park called Fantazmoland experimenting on human souls and putting them into inanimate objects to give them life, and while the rest of the plot may be strongly inspired specifically by Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach, I picture it going on an otherwise pretty original path, and I intend to elaborate on it more in a following post.
Recently, however, I’ve been having this other FNAF-based story idea that bears a plot structure pretty similar to the first three FNAF games, mostly games 1 and 3, as well as an element or two from Sister Location, as I’ll elaborate on in a little bit, and it’s probably not as original as I intend Fantazmoland to be, though I’ve thought of a few twists, and I’m not quite sure if I’m going to incorporate it into my Fantazmoland story or just make it a separate story of its own, but I’m hoping you guys can help me out with a little advice and/or some suggestions, and I mostly came up with it as a sort of coping mechanism.
You see, the idea for this latter story came to me not long after having watched this episode of the Roxanne Wolf and Gregory Show, and for those who aren’t familiar with it, it’s a VRchat video series in which Roxanne Wolf and Gregory share a YouTube channel and have many adventures, and in which Roxanne has assumed the role as Gregory’s adoptive mother as of more or less somewhere around the latter half of last year.
Now, as you may have already found by now, in that specific episode I’ve just mentioned, Roxanne briefly alludes to Gregory of a past instance in which she’d once tried to…*gulp*…eviscerate him; now, I don’t know exactly when this happened, as I haven’t seen all of the episodes so far—and I’ve struggling to work up the nerve to watch the ones prior to one in which she’d finally repaired after having been shattered—or for what reason (but if any of you are already familiar with this series, feel free to inform me), despite playing the role as Gregory’s adoptive mother, though I’d initially presumed that it’d happened somewhere during her shattered phase, where she was lacking emotions as well as any motherly feelings she held for Gregory that had been induced by a maternity chip that was then lost after she got shattered — but, of course, any episodes I’d watched taking place after she got repaired make to mention of such evisceration, and instead mention a completely different thing she’d done to Gregory during her shattered phase which I won’t waste time elaborating on, but was, in my opinion, not quite as bad as trying to gruesomely murder your surrogate child.
Regardless, I still found it pretty whack to think that Roxanne would stoop to such a low as to murder a child just because she lacked a maternity chip and didn’t perceive herself as a mother figure to Gregory, and wouldn’t have expected such a thing before. Even Glamrock Freddy in Roxanne’s apology episode expresses his surprise and disappointment towards Shattered Roxy’s actions towards Greogory (though, of course, he wasn’t referring to any attempts at murdering or disemboweling Gregory), stating that he “felt like Gregory was a safe one, and that [Roxanne] would never do anything to him, maternity chip or not.” And while this isn’t the case, as you’ve most likely have already seen by now, I’d sometimes picture Roxanne excusing herself in saying that she’d “never been a big fan of kids,” not that it’s any valid or justifiable excuse for attempting cold-blooded murder.
With that in mind, I’ve also then tried to imagine how she might’ve tried to resume a “normal” life if she actually had succeeded in murdering Gregory, trying to resume her usual routine of performing in front of other children, only to then think to herself, “Ugh, great! I now have to deal with more snot-nosed brats” and that it might then lead to something of a child-murder spree probably not at all too dissimilar to when William Afton had murdered all those children in earlier FNAF games.
So, as a sufferer of OCD, and thusly often facing frequent torment from such thoughts, I’d come up with a story that kinda goes along pretty similar lines, focussing on a serial child-murderer born from being stuck in a position where she’s forced to attend/cater to/deal with children for most of the time despite having a strong distaste for children; this murder spree, of course, being catalyzed possibly from having first murdered a child or a couple or so children under her especial care, more or less essentially holding the role as children to her, be they biologically born to her or adoptive.
Now, of course, unlike my Joe the Slasher story idea, this isn’t simply about a serial killer murdering multiple kids; there’s an additional twist to it, also. I’ve pictured the souls of the children this story’s focal killer had murdered come back to haunt her and seek revenge against her. So far, the structure of this here story seems more or less kind of a rip-off of the FNAF franchise (especially FNAF 1, 3, and Sister Location), as I’ve pictured it involving the children’s spirits possessing animatronics, mannequins, or other anthropoid figures resident to whatever establishment our main villain works at, probably killing other employees therein as they mistake said employees for their murderer, as she most likely had her face hidden with some sort of mask or something while she’d killed those kids in order to hide her identity, and said murderer ultimately facing a death not unlike that of William Afton when he became Springtrap, and likely also coming back in sequels in a very similar fashion also.
However, I’ve tried to add some tweaks and more or less original twists to my story in attempt to make it less of a FNAF-ripoff.
For starters, our main villain is female, and whereas William Afton was English/British, I’ve considered making my villain possibly French if not American; in which case I’ve even picked out a name for her: Guadalupe Moreau, often called “Lupe” for short. And while I know Guadalupe is more of a Spanish name than a French one, I figured it can be excused considering how Spain and France are pretty close neighbors anyway — plus, “Lupe” sounds pretty similar to the French word for wolf, loup (masculine-tense, anyway…), making a bit of a nod towards Roxanne Wolf as inspiration for this character. I’d also pictured Lupe taking on the disguise of a mascot character who is also a wolf, sorta like how William Afton had taken on the disguise of Spring Bonnie when he was murdering those children.
Also, even though I’ve pictured her as having an aforementioned strong distaste for children, I’ve also thought that that might not have always been the case, and that she might’ve even started out as a more enthusiastic mother (or, at least, enthusiastic on becoming a mother, if she hadn’t been one already) before attaining postpartum depression after giving birth to a couple of kids, which later drives her to murder them, and then later a kid or two of hers she may’ve adopted some time earlier.
I’ve also strongly considered giving her the distinguishing feature of having heterochromatic eyes, with one being blue and the other green, and possibly even having a twin sister who also has heterochromatic eyes but colored in a reverse order to those of Lupe’s — not exactly sure what this twin sister’s role would be in the story, though I’ve had the vague concept of Lupe impersonating her after possibly eliminating her one way or another, this kinda taking inspiration from the “Miracle Child” episode of the Harmony and Horror video series made by another YouTuber by the name of Battington.
As to what role or occupation Lupe plays in the establishment the story takes place in, I’ve been indecisive as to whether it be as an entertainer for the kids if not some music performer like Roxy (but then what might be the point in the animatronics there?) or at least some sort of attendee to the kids, or possibly being the founder of the establishment alongside her possible sister, much like how William Afton was the founder of Fazbear Entertainment.
Secondly, the setting for the story might not necessarily be at a pizzeria, but maybe instead some sort of burger joint, though I’ve lately been having the idea that it may be a daycare, having gotten that idea from a video my YouTuber cha.momilie called Barbara’s Daycare, in which case I’ve come to strongly lean towards the idea of Lupe being its founder, having at least once been an aspiring mother herself at the time of the daycare’s founding.
Thirdly, if it helps, it the story might not even have that analogue horror plot structure where its a bunch of fragments one has to piece together in the right way and the big reveal comes later, and may instead be related completely through Lupe’s perspective — or maybe the story does come with some puzzle pieces that can be put together.
I guess it doesn’t matter too much if it’s a bit similar to FNAF, because it’s not like I necessarily intend to profit off of it; it’s just harmless fun and a therapeutic way to cope with my troubling thoughts concerning Roxanne Wolf in that one YouTube video series.
So, any thoughts or suggestions for this story from you guys? Please leave a comment and let me know. I’ll be introducing more concepts to this in later posts.

Relationship with Stray Kids
Tumblr media
➣ CHAN ☾ dachan
daeun is chan’s baby and the fact that she’s only two years younger than him changes nothing
really really dependent on his approval. especially on mixing during the first few songs for skz
skz has a completely different sound to what daeun was used to, and changing her production style to mirror that was a challenge
there are a lot of clips in the first few episodes of the survival show of daeun sidling up to chan with a notebook in her hand
and them sitting beside each other on the sofa while they worked
you can find dozens of ‘Bang Chan doing the Proud Dad smile because Daeun existed’ videos on youtube
its a very common occurrence
hence why daeun hates hates hates being told off by him
its never anything serious
but she always feels so guilty afterwards, and then she’ll cry and then chan feels guilty
and it’s a whole guilt-fest
so daeun usually tries to avoid having to be told off
now that doesn’t stop her from telling him off
can and will drag him out by the ear if he stays in his studio for too long
that’s a lie
she’ll just stand in the doorway and pout until he saves his work down and leaves
works every time
sorry but this man loves to pick her up?
its a problem
girl isn’t even hurt or tired just piggybacks
always
he said he likes to carry her because he knows that she dances in heels for so long so her feet must hurt more than theirs does
YEAH-
FAN FAVOURITE MOMENT.
chan walks at the end of the group, we all know this. but the one time he wasn’t, was when daeun was the second last getting out of the van, and had to dip back in to snag the bag she had left behind. already three strides into the building,
chan - upon realizing that he had seven heads in  front of him, and not eight - spun around in a circle, eyes wide and shoulders pushed back as he tried to peer over the crowds. when he spotted daeun, he took her bag from her hand, snagging her hand in his other one, and refused to let go of her until they made it safely into the venue.
Tumblr media
➣ MINHO ☾ mieun
actually attached at the hip?
genuinely
like, no one was going to peg the very intimidating and sullen looking-fellow with the bubbly bitch with pink in her hair and yet:
✨besties✨
it’s comical
minho’s dry humor perfectly balances with daeun’s unique blend of absolute buffoonery
they have a lil tradition before they go onstage of exchanging bracelets
yes, they have matching bracelets
it was minho’s idea and yes, stays freaked out
it’s like a little, ‘see you on the other side’ thing
because lord knows daeun spent hours upon hours running herself ragged in practices until all hours of the night
and minho Wasn’t Having It
so the bracelets are a little. U Got This. from him
really doesn’t like it when she cries
to the point where he’ll do absolutely anything to get her to stop crying
it was then, that daeun discovered that minho gives god tier hugs
God. Tier.
minho and daeun cuddling when they’re drunk? more likely than you’d think
they’re hilarious together, and probably one of stays most preferred ships with daeun and any of the boys
the twt threadfics here are Legendary
the most popular one is a coffee shop au - where daeun is a struggling literature grad, and minho is a long-suffering night shift worker
absolutely does not tolerate any kind of hate towards daeun - verbal or otherwise. he blew a fuse the first time she trended for sexy pictures someone had taken of her at a fansign
daeun had to tell him it was fine twelve times before he calmed down
FAN FAVOURITE MOMENT.
daeun pulled down her skirt again for the nth time, shifting uncomfortably in her seat. she had her ankles tucked behind the leg of the chair and her hands folded over her lap to try and prevent anyone getting a glimpse up further into her skirt than was strictly necessary, but was - ultimately - doing a poor job of protecting her modesty.
leaning over, minho took a glance at daeun shifting uncomfortably in her seat again, and shucked off his jacket - leaving him in a thin t-shirt in the cold breeze. before daeun could protest, he had laid the jacket over her legs, tucking it in and then sliding his hand in between hers and holding it tightly over his own lap.
Tumblr media
➣ CHANGBIN ☾ dabin
same age siblings !
both being in the ‘99 line, and with daeun originally training to be a main rapper than a vocalist
they were pretty comfortable around each other having spent so long training in each other’s presence
in fact
they even performed a duet together for one of the monthly evaluations
that was when they really became friends so to speak
daeun fell asleep during one of their rehearsals on the floor of the studio
and changbin couldn’t just, leave her
so he ended up staying with her the whole night
was she embarrassed in the morning? yeah. and then changbin told her off for not prioritizing sleep more, and then she was more embarrassed.
now in the group, their dynamic settled into something extremely comfortable
when daeun was first introduced to the boys as a team, changbin was the only one she was completely comfortable rooming with
his studio? nah, their studio
did daeun sit in on a lot of the 3RACHA work prior to debut? yes, solely because she wanted the experience, and changbin said she could stay
it is actually his studio, but there’s a small collection (read: four) of soft pillows in the corner of the room for daeun to sit on as they work
according to her, she works better on the floor
changbin can’t find it in him to refute the argument, so he always ends up down there with her, with sheets sprawled over the carpet
when he started working out, he started taking daeun to the gym
swole buddies
except daeun wasn’t allowed to build muscle and just had to run on the treadmill the whole time and changbin wasn’t made about that. he wasn’t.
FAN FAVOURITE MOMENT.
changbin and daeun being the mafia when playing with skz and neither of them being able to look at each other without laughing. every time they’d make eye contact, daeun’s lips would twitch up, and changbin would have to turn away to cough into his arm lest he give himself away.
ultimately, they lost - much to the chagrin of the pair, who wailed at their loss and proceeded to drink their sorrows away with the coca cola that they were sponsored for.
product placement at it’s finest, even if it was a metaphor for alcoholism.
Tumblr media
➣ HYUNJIN ☾ dajin
lil beans
babies
awh
not at the start but now, yes.
he was wary around her, at first because hyunjin knows he’s attractive and the Last Thing He Wants is a groupmate that has a crush on him
so he was a bit, cold and aloof with daeun at the beginning of the survival show
he didn’t want to give her the wrong impression !
but then
then
daeun apologized to him in her video message after her elimination for ‘upsetting him, and making him feel like he couldn’t be comfortable around her’ and dear god
hyunjin’s heart = broken. destroyed. shattered into pieces.
he still feels Very Guilty about this sometimes because he knows that his attitude towards her played a huge part in her feeling alienated and not like she belonged in the group
daeun tells him it doesn’t bother her but he knows
they talked through it though
good communication besties
A+
he doesn’t call her noona though
he did, once upon a time, but then daeun felt weird because realistically, there’s only four months between them and that’s not enough to make her any more of a noona to him than he is a hyung to jisung and felix?
they have a little rountine now, when either of them are upset
they pack up all the emotions for a little bit
into a little box
get out a laptop (doesn’t matter whos)
and just cuddle, with some blankets, and a terrible show or movie that they’re not really watching until the person is ok to talk
arguably the most healthy friendship you will ever find
therapists around the country are giving standing ovations
FAN FAVOURITE MOMENT.
felix padded into hyunjin’s room to shake the boy awake, before catching sight of an already-awake daeun wrapped in his arms.
“noona?”
“help-” she gasped out, patting frantically at hyunjin’s arm that was firmly wrapped around her middle. “he won’t let go. it’s been an hour.”
felix bit his lip, trying to stifle the laugh that was threatening to burst out. “i don’t know, you look pretty comfortable.” he began backing out the door.
“felix. lee felix. lee felix you come back here!” the harsh whisper-shouts echoed down the hallway after the giggling boy.
Tumblr media
➣ JISUNG ☾ jidae
partners in crime
probably have committed some crime together at some point but there’s no proof so chan can’t yell at them for it
they met when daeun first sat in on the 3RACHA meetings
did someone say: soulmates
changbin is convinced that the angel choir played when they first locked eyes
like this
jisung kicked the angel off of daeun’s shoulder and now it’s just him and the devil racking up reverse-brownie points in daeun’s conscience
he’s been a wonderful influence, truly
to be fair though, daeun did attempt to convince him to stop eating ramen every day (to a varying degree of success)
to no degree of success actually. she just takes him out of the dorm to eat it now, but chan doesn’t need to know that bit
daeun? did you mean: jisung’s pillow?
anywhere, any place - he just flops down onto her
many head pats
they are both givers and receivers
no words spoken only HEAD PATS
the comfort is exchanged through osmosis
jisung is wholeheartedly against her ever getting a boyfriend
Absolutely Not. she is theirs, and he will glare at anyone else who dares to Look At Her
nap buddies
they get a combined total of negative six hours of sleep per week so they always end up napping together
it’s very cute
FAN FAVOURITE MOMENT.
less of a ‘moment’ and more of a series of events that STAY found hilarious?
we all know han jisung’s iconic converse. they’re legendary. unofficial skz merch.
right well, daeun was seen wearing them out and around a few times by fansites, and one of them asked had she bought her own pair after seeing jisung’s at a fansign.
daeun laughed and said no, they were almost the same size in shoe so she just borrowed his.
daeun stole jisung’s shoes.
Tumblr media
➣ FELIX ☾ daelix
stop they love each other so much
felix said once in a vlive that he finds daeun really comforting to be around because she’s so calm
‘calm’
he had a lot of anxiety about debuting because of what jyp said to him upon his elimination *angry noises*
so daeun tried her best to alleviate as much of his worries as possible
even if that meant sacrificing her own sleep to sit with him in the kitchen and talk things out
sorry i’d like to revisit the point that They Love Each Other Very Much
felix says that he was worried about leaving his sisters behind, so having another noona was really comforting to him
daeun absolutely has an australian accent when she speaks english now and it is completely felix’s fault
he’d actively correct her pronunciation to make her sound more australian because he thinks the accent is so cute on her
aggressively cute together
you will get a toothache if you watch them for too long
someone stop them they’re so adorable
he likes to give out random compliments to see how red he can make her face go before she whacks him to get him to stop
the results conclude: a pretty nice cherry-cheeked colour
felix really lives up to his koala nickname when he’s around daeun
will latch on and will not let go until he has to
you thought chan loved felix? now see: chan watching daeun and felix
pain
its so painful he just smiles like everything is right with the world and it IS because felix and daeun are there and aaaaaAAAA-
FAN FAVOURITE MOMENT.
a sad moment, but one that features in every compilation of daelix’s interactions anyway. when daeun’s name was called for her elimination, she closed her eyes, taking in a deep breath and schooling her face into something impassive. the boys were all staring at her with devastated looks on their faces, but nothing was matching the look that felix was giving her from his position right by her side.
he choked out her name, stumbling forwards into her arms as she caught him and wrapped him in a hug. felix apologized profusely for being the one in need of comfort, while daeun just ran a hand over his hair and told him it was alright, she was alright.
Tumblr media
➣ SEUNGMIN ☾ daseung
protector of daeun’s sanity
she has One (1) well behaved dongsaeng and its kim seungmin
it’s not that he’s less likely to act out than the others, really. it’s that he’s the least likely to die while doing it, so that = most well behaved, in daeun’s books
daeun likes to squish his cheeks
no reason
other than, soft cheeks go squish and seungmin lets her so why would she forsake this golden opportunity
now if he wants to sit on the couch beside her he has to resign himself to cheek-smooshing
also cheek kisses, rarely. usually when daeun’s intoxicated.
the boys had figured that both of their personalities together would just merge and create an even more chill environment
calm²
but NO
pemdas
it cancelled out
they’re not Chaotic but they’re certainly not Calm
it’s a unique vibe that can only be described by this -> link
sorry
scholars but minus the education
profound visionaries but they’re blind, type beat
have the combined brainpower of the librarian gary from that one spongebob episode but they choose not to utilize it for the memes
in all seriousness though, they’re very comfortable around each other
seungmin struggled a lot with confidence during their debut months, and daeun was the only person who really knew the full extent of it all
there was a Hefty Amount of nighttime talks on daeun’s bed under blankets stolen from the living room
FAN FAVOURITE MOMENT.
seungmin can sing, we all know that. but stray kids’ style rarely allows for full ballad songs on an album, so seungmin being given the opportunity to perform ‘Love Poem’ on Kingdom was truly a blessing in disguise. (the disguise being daeun’s re-occuring vocal nodules that left her unable to perform).
after the performance, seungmin had barely taken a foot off the stage before he was being tackled by a teary-eyed daeun, who immediately buried her face into his shoulder to stop the cameras getting a good look at her crying.
“n-noona?”
“you can sing.”
“yeah?”
“you sing so beautifully, minnie, oh my god.”
Tumblr media
➣ JEONGIN ☾ jeondae
the first thing you have to realize about daeun and jeongin’s relationship is that both of them can be the Biggest Babies in the world
now with that out of the way
jeongin ADORES daeun
im sorry did someone say ‘noona who wholeheartedly finds it impossible to say no to him’?
i think they did
he doesn’t take advantage of it, persay
but he Does and Will use it to others detriment - especially during games
“jeongin! you told me you weren’t the mafia! i believed you! this is a betrayal!”
she’s so so smitten with him and everything he does
it is virtually impossible for her to be mad at him
he just gets a little scowl and then a soft flick on his ear at the PEAK of scolding
is the world’s worst enabler for All His Bad Ideas
often complains that he’s growing up too fast and it isn’t fair that he’s taller than her now
which he’ll then respond to by resting his elbow on her head and leaning on her, so. it never goes down very well
daeun checks his micpack for him before every stage
every. stage.
daeun is the only person who is allowed to coddle him as much as she does
hyunjin is Bitter and daeun is Smug
jeongin needs help with schoolwork? daeun would do it for him if she had been any good at school either, but alas
 FAN FAVOURITE MOMENT.
chan stepped into the kitchen, camera in hand.
“what are you doing?”
daeun and jeongin shove his backpack off the table, the coloured permanent markers rolling off immediately after, two black ones uncapped in their hands.
“NOTHING”
chan looked pointedly at them, and then to the backpack that had slid underneath the table. there, written all over the straps and the front pocket were small drawings, ranging from dinosours to the words (written in very terrible handwriting, so he couldn’t be sure which one of them wrote it): “skool suks!”
chan looked over to the pair. they scrambled off the chairs, abandoning the evidence in their break for safety.

RWBY Rewrite: The Jaundice Arc
Hey there everybody! Sorry it’s been awhile since you’ve heard from me, but I’ve got a job now and less of writing drive than I had when I was high school/college. Doesn’t mean it’s completely gone though and now I’m going to tackle the point that people started to really have problems with RWBY: the Jaundice Arc.
I know, big guns, but frankly I wanted to get this one. Partially because I want to do Jaune’s post eventually and I feel like I need to do this one before I can do that one, and partially because like I said before: this point where people really started to have problems with the show. And more specifically, this when people REALLY start to dislike Jaune.
Now, I’ve touched on my feelings on him before, but let me get this all out and over with. I don’t hate Jaune and I don’t think he’s an inherently bad character. Almost everyone on this show has been written badly and I think the absolutely simmering undercurrents that some parts of the RWDE community have for him is perhaps a little over the top. Personally, I think the core idea of his character is pretty good and he’s at his best in my opinion when he’s playing support to the other characters.
That being said, I completely understand why people dislike him. He has been constantly given focus away from the main team, which started in Volume 1 which was already short as it was to devote about a quarter of your episodes to a non main character in your first season. He also doesn’t suffer nearly as much for the consequences of his actions while the female characters get constant crap for theirs. I’m not even going to go into the Miles Luna Author Self Insert thing.
After having read fan fiction and seen some rewrite scenarios on Youtube, I personally think that Jaune can be written well so long as he’s not being written by Miles and Kerry. With that, I’m ready to take my crack at it.
Setup
As I said, Jaune took massive screen time away from the main characters since early on in the series. There’s an easy way to fix this. As I stated in an earlier post, I was going to spend the first volume/season focusing on Team RWBY aside from a small potential team up with Team JNPR. Jaune, and his other teammates, would mainly be relegated to comedy and background support for the main four girls after the Initiation. I’d throw in a few hints of what’s to come with them, but that’s it. Thus, I’d actually put the Jaundice Arc in the second volume/season which would be significantly larger than the first.
Because we’d be doing it then, we’d have bit more buildup for this story. Cardin’s bullying and enmity towards Jaune would be set up in the prior volume/season’s class interactions. As I noted in my School Rewrite, Jaune’s strategic abilities would also be showcased early on as well as Cardin’s tendency to go head on and brutal without realizing potential problems with that approach. Jaune’s relationship with Pyrrha and the rest of his team would also be better set up.
Now that the board is set, let’s get to it.
Student Days
The first thing I would absolutely change is making it clear that Jaune is actually trying. That was the thing that really did irk me with how Miles and Kerry wrote this arc, despite having gone through the effort of cheating his way into a huntsman academy, he then proceeds to goof off and put absolutely no effort into it. So, before and during this arc, it’ll be clearly shown he’s been studying like crazy and putting in extra time into the fighting simulations that are available for students. He’s not failing in terms of his regular studies, but he’s not top of the class either. In terms of physical combat, he’s the worst in his year, but he’s exceptional in Strategy and Tactics. This I think would be a good and reasonable place for Jaune starting out given his character and background prior to the series.
Thing is, this pisses Cardin off. He sees how much of a weakling Jaune is as a fighter and can see that he is so out of place at Beacon. Despite this, he’s paired with arguably the strongest person in their class who hangs on his every word and has (unintentionally) been showing him up as a leader during Strategy and Tactics. He knows something is off with Jaune, leading him to spy on him to figure out what’s up.
I wouldn’t change that much with him and Pyrrha’s interaction on the roof, I already briefed the reason why Pyrrha trusts him as a leader in her rewrite post. Maybe throw in a hint that his father really didn’t want Jaune to become a huntsman, but I’ll get into that when I get into his backstory proper.
I also wouldn’t change that much revolving in his talk with Cardin straight after save for one thing. After Jaune is left alone with his thoughts on this situation his lies have gotten him into, the scene shifts to being shown on a screen, making it clear that this is being watched from a camera on the roof. A finger taps on the screen a few times and we hear a familiar pensive hum.
The fall out with his team and his one on one with Ruby isn’t really changed, aside from Ren and Nora being more vocally concerned about Jaune’s actions and Pyrrha’s frosty change in behavior which the latter shoots down the concerns sharply.
Forever Falls/Aftermath
I don’t think I’ll change that much regarding the trip itself. I was thinking of mentioning the reason the teams are there is because this is their group task for the month (gathering sap for Professor Peach, who would actually be here taking originally Glynda’s place) and that’s why it’s only these three teams here. Same overall events occur: CRDL tries to get Pyrrha, Jaune stands up to Cardin, Grimm take down with Pyrrha’s unknown aid.
Jaune does apologize to Pyrrha like in the original and ask to train him. Though I was thinking that he’d get something a bit more painful than just a hard shove. I was thinking she’d take his hand and tackle him to the ground hard while pointing out his weaknesses.
This will cut to Ozpin’s office, with Cardin finishing up with telling his version of events who is obviously very agitated from the day’s events. In this Rewrite, there is no reason why he wouldn’t just tell on Jaune. Ozpin merely takes it all in with pensive expression before asking about the light that seemed to protect Jaune. Cardin answers this with confusion and some surprise, Ozpin nodding with a “Good to know” before updating a file on his tablet. Cardin is even more confused and asks what the Headmaster is going to do about Jaune. His answer: Nothing.
Cardin is shocked and furious at the Headmaster, going into him a bit before threatening to go to the board with this. Ozpin responds that even if he did so, he wouldn’t have a case. Cardin is completely confused as Ozpin explains: When students apply for Beacon, their applications go through extensive background checks before there are selections for the second round (ie the Entrance Exam). Such fake transcripts would have been discovered around that time.....had they actually gone through the admissions board. As it was, Jaune’s was accepted through an alternative.
But honestly, that’s not to say the admissions board is completely infallible, Ozpin would muse. Some are very inclined to promote those connected to them, others are interested in advancing their career elsewhere,.....and some might be inclined to take money from very influential people, such as a well meaning Uncle whose Council seat is up for reelection soon. Cardin gets noticeably stiff at that last one. Then Ozpin bring up some videos to the screen, all of them showing Cardin and his team bullying others, particularly Faunus students. The headmaster then would muse aloud that he wonder how Councilman Winchester, or moreso his Faunus opponent, would react to such un-Huntsman like behavior getting out into the news. Cardin immediately gets what the headmaster wants and goes completely quiet. Ozpin would merely say that he is a big believer in second chances and that while he understands that shenanigans in such as a school as this is to expected, Cardin would do best to remember that even if he thinks no one is watching he should act like there is. This cuts the meeting to a close with Cardin leaving quietly and Oz going back to his tablet, clicking back to a file with Jaune’s symbol on in it amongst others files with symbols on them. Only Jaune’s is a different color than the others and a scroll up would show us only one other file with that same color: Ruby’s.
Okay, it feels like I spent a lot of this post musing on the Cardin and Ozpin scene (really I could have done a oneshot on it), but this really was an important scene to establish some very important things to this Rewrite.
1. Ozpin is not an idiot. Ozpin is shown to be very aware of what’s going on at his school. While he may not get directly involved with things, he is shown to be watching his students. And while he is shown to be merciful in giving Cardin a second chance after the crap he pulled, he is also shown to not be a pushover. With such vigilance showcased, it will the Fall of Beacon even more devastating in how Ozpin missed his enemies working under his nose.
2. Ozpin’s true nature and goals are thrown into question. This rewrite is going to be more morally gray, especially in regards to Ozpin. Not only has he blackmailed a student to keep it quiet about another student, he knowingly let someone into his school he knew wasn’t qualified. In this rewrite up until this point he would have been shown as a distant but well intentioned headmaster. Now, he’s just gotten plenty shady. It would also bring into question Ruby’s enrollment into Beacon given that she got in in the same way (also strengthening those two’s parallels, but I digress).
3. Makes us question why Ozpin let Jaune in and sets up that Jaune is important in some way. As noted in my musings in a previous post, it makes no sense for Jaune to have gotten into Beacon unless Ozpin saw his transcripts and accepted him on that alone. Since we are shown in this scene Ozpin is aware of the transcripts, it makes us question what did he accept Jaune for. This also sets up that he will be important to the story moving forward, and not just as the revenge driven not ex boyfriend of the girl who tragically died.
Now, why did Ozpin accept him? Well, that will be covered in his own character post. I think this is plenty long enough and I think I will do something different before I get back to these Rewrite post. I hope like this one more than the last.
See you all! And stay save in this Covid time!

Survey #451
“taste the waste of their god’s grace & spit your hate upon your young”
Who are you subscribed to on YouTube? A shitload of people. Do you like to go to the farmer's market? Yeah, sure. What will (or was) the color of your wedding dress be? Probably black. What's your favorite melon? I don't really like melons, actually. What was the name of the last pet of yours that died? Teddy. :( When was the last time you wished the day would just get over with? Literally every day. Seriously. It's funny, I dread fighting to sleep at night, but I also just want it to be time to sleep so time will pass. My life is just so fucking boring that I just... wait for something exciting to happen. Name one person you've never had a fight with: Tez. What are you currently listening to? "Sex Metal Barbie" by In This Moment. What would you rather have: cat or dog? I prefer cats. Who is your least favorite person in real life? Probably my sister's husband. Do you ever watch anybody's live stream of... anything, really? I'll sometimes watch live let's plays. Does your house have security cameras? No. If you go grey as you age, would you dye your hair or let it be? I'll be dyeing it. What was the last establishment you stopped going to due to bad service? What happened? I'm not sure. What soundtrack do you listen to the most? Silent Hill 2's, definitely. Was there a family secret you weren’t told about until you were an adult? I don't know if it's really a secret, but I didn't know until this year that my dad did some really dangerous drugs before us kids were born. Do you have an opinion most people you meet seem to disagree with you? Yes. What’s something you like to have many options to choose from? Food, ha ha. Feels great to have a full kitchen after a grocery trip. What’s the strangest decorative object you own? Nothing "strange" to me. What’s a thing you couldn’t imagine doing with your life right now? One biggie is having a baby. I just... could not imagine. My life would plummet. What’s been your proudest moment? Graduating in the top percentile in my high school graduating class. What’s the filthiest non-pornographic movie you’ve seen? Omfg, Sausage Party. That movie was so gross. Do you know anyone who doesn't seem to be fond of animals? Thankfully, no. I don't even think I could befriend someone who doesn't like animals. Are you planning any outings or trips anytime soon? Whereabouts? No. Do you know anyone who has a phobia of a certain animal? Yeah, like me with whale sharks. Is there a particular brand of technology/electronics that you prefer? Not really, no. Is there a singer whose voice gives you goosebumps/chills? Amy Lee's. And is there a singer whose voice you simply can't stand? Yeah, such as Bob Dylan. Are there any authors that are particularly dominant on your bookshelf? Tui T. Sutherland, but only because I read their series Wings of Fire. Have you seen any photographs or videos that made you smile today? I'm sure on Facebook at some point. Which item in your fridge are you most looking forward to consuming? Does the freezer count? If so, this Healthy Choice grilled chicken pesto bowl I have in there. I am like addicted to them. Has anyone you know got into a new relationship lately? I don't know. If you menstruate, do you experience much PMS prior to it? It varies month-to-month. Have you ever had a tattoo covered up or added to? I had my Markiplier tattoo essentially redone by a better artist. I also plan on getting my "ohana" tat covered, as well as my "how rare and beautiful it is to even exist" one (I adore the quote, but it's not an original design, which I don't like having anymore), and I want to move and redesign my "perfectly flawed" one because I want a bigger tattoo in its location. Can you remember the last time you had a sudden change of mind? Yeah; I'm pretty sure I like-like my friend Girt now, something I was never entirely sure about. When was the last time you did something on a whim? *shrug* Were you raised by both of your parents? If not, then who raised you? Well, I guess both, but Dad didn't do a lot of the teaching part about life and stuff. Have you ever began a relationship with someone you knew for less than a week? No. Has one of your friends ever tried to ‘hook you up?’ Yes. Colleen tried that with me and Girt and only succeeded in making us very uncomfortable. She said something I wanted to slap her for that I won't repeat. What is your card game of choice? Magic: The Gathering. What is your favourite books series? I think my favorite series of all time was the Shiloh trilogy. I adored both the books and movies. Do you prefer landmarks or street names when being given directions? You'd better give me landmarks, ha ha. Do you read the prologues in the beginnings of books? Of course. What was your favourite gym class moment? There're such things as GOOD gym memories in school? Do you think that ocean boardwalks are fun? Yes. Do you dread when people ask you to sign their yearbooks? No, I always thought it was very flattering that they even wanted mine. Do you have a favourite Scooby-Doo movie? The Phantom Virus one. I had the video game as a kid, too. Could never beat the damn thing. Do you think it’s cute when toddlers try to run away and fall down? No? I don't like seeing children - or anyone - fall. Do you enjoy listening to your grandparents tell stories of their past? So, this really only happened once, and it was coincidentally the day I learned of her pancreatic cancer, but before Mom told me. I had an assignment to interview someone of an older generation about how various sources of media affected their lives, like the development of TV and such, and she really got into it. It was very interesting to learn about. Do you have a crush on someone? I guess I do idfk. If so... what does his/her name begin with? "D." What attracts you to them? More than anything, the fact he's been there for me without fail. Both single and when I was with Jason and he was interested in me, he's just... been there and has made an effort since high school to be in my life in one way or another. Do they know that you like them? Not anymore, no. We dated for a few months, but I broke up with him because he felt more like my brother, so I would assume he doesn't think I do. Maybe he still is family to me. I really don't know what I feel. If they don't know, why didn't you tell them? I might at some point, idk. We just haven't talked in a while. Name two people that you miss: Jason and Megan. Have you ever seen Titanic? When I was in the hospital, yes. Everyone was crying, lmao. Have you ever swam with dolphins? No, but I would. When was the last time you had a stomachache? Now. Mother Nature finally visited me after three whole fucking months and is v angry. What's going to bed early for you? Like 7:00. Do you want to have a big family in the future? Of pets! Human kids ain't for me. What was the last thing you did that gave you a rush? Hell if I know. Favorite Nicholas Cage movie? Ghost Rider. Have you had your Covid vaccine yet? Which one, if you have? Yes. I got Moderna. If you've had your vaccine, did you experience any side effects? I did on my second dosage. I was OUT of it the day afterwards, but then I was fine. What's the next item of clothing that you intend to buy for yourself? I need new bras badly. What Facebook groups have you found the most helpful? It's called "Not Just A Pet Rock (Python regius)" and is a group for advanced ball python husbandry. It is very informative, but I will say there is a SHITLOAD of very rude elitists. Do you like your butt? Why or why not? NO because it's a PANCAKE and I want CAKE. Have you ever personally been a victim of homophobia? I personally think so. When Sara visited and we were trying to go to my older sister's so she especially could meet her, Ash entirely ignored Mom's messages. I know her homophobic husband well enough to nearly be able to guarantee he didn't want us coming over because the kids "don't need to see that." Ash kinda does what Nick says, so... you know. Do you think you’d be happier if you had a pet? I know I'm happier with pets. Who was the last person you went on a date with? Sara. Were you ever hospitalized as a little kid? No. What’s your favorite way to curl your hair? It's too short to do that. At what age did you start swearing? However old I was in 7th grade. What is something you physically can’t do? Clean up vomit lkdsjal;sdkjfa;lkwd. I can't clean up my pet's or even my own. I literally can't. My mom has to. What do like better, apples or oranges? Apples. I don't like oranges. Around the holidays, do you hope for snow? Yes!!! What are your top two favorite bands? Ozzy Osbourne and Metallica. How many people do you 100% trust? Like two. Maybe. Do you care what others think about you? Way too much. Has anyone ever called you a bitch? My grandmother has. Did you watch Teletubbies when you were younger? Omg yes, I was obsessed. Do you have any licenses other than your driver's license? I don't even have that. Could you live the rest of your life without eating meat? No. Not because I don't want to, because I do, but I would have an extreme protein deficit if I did that. Besides meat, I don't like enough protein-rich foods. Have you ever had a rolling backpack? Yes. Did you make any money today? I haven't made any money in a very, very long time. I'm only ever paid when someone hires me to take pictures for them. What was the highest place you've ever jumped from? I don't know. Definitely not very high. Have you ever gone swimming in a river? Yes. What was the last souvenir someone got you? I have zero clue. Do you have a favorite remix of a song? Hm. Perhaps this techno-y remix of "Psychosocial" by Slipknot. I don't know for sure, though. What do you think is the most saddest sounding instrument? Either the violin or piano. Do you really pay attention to the ratings on movies? Nope. Do you have a favorite species of wild cat (tiger/lion/cougar/etc.)? Probably clouded leopards aesthetics, but I think lions overall. If you had $500,000, what would you do with it? Pay off school debt as well as help Mom with various financial issues, buy new glasses, buy Mom and I a new house and car, get Venus a great tank with all the optimal supplies, get LOADS of tattoos, donate to various charities, adopt a few specific pets, travel to Yellowstone, get laser hair removal on my legs and teeth whitening... There are a lot of possibilities. Did the last person you touched lips with have a kid? Just scaly ones. :') "First loves are never really over." Is this true for you? Yeeeep... Did you like Michael Jackson before he died? I didn't really have an opinion on him. I know/like a couple songs, sure. What are some things that would make you break up with someone? If they became abusive, started doing drugs, acted arrogantly, didn't understand my mental conditions and were unwilling to be emotionally supportive, stuff like that. What was the worst breakup you've ever had? Ha, the one with Jason. For. Fucking. Sure.

Tokyo Mew Mew New Prologue! Part One: Recap
November 2, 2020 marked the release of part one of the Tokyo Mew Mew New Prologue series, an online documentary showing us a look behind-the-scenes into the audition process and casting of Ichigo Momomiya in the new animation project, “Tokyo Mew Mew New”, announced on April 2, 2020 for Nakayoshi’s 65th anniversary and the 20th anniversary of Tokyo Mew Mew.
The documentary is narrated by Saki Nakajima, the voice of Ichigo in the original 2002 animation and subsequent video games.
This episode focused on three of the twelve audition finalists, picked by judges and by fans on the “mysta” app out of the 57 entries that made it through all three stages of the screening process to attend the Event Screening. According to the documentary, there were some 3,000+ applicants in total!
The Event Screening consisted of two parts: reading lines on stage and singing and dancing to the new song “bitter sweet darling”. Judges for the event included opera singer and vocal director Sugai Hidenori, dancer and choreographer SA.KANA, director of audiography Kameyama Toshiki, editor-in-chief of Nakayoshi magazine Suda Shukuko and Yoshida Takeshi, a representative on behalf of Pony Canyon/Swallow.
Highlighted this episode were:
Entry 1719: Izumi Haruna a.k.a Harunyan. “I’m good at communicating in English. So I hope to spread Tokyo Mew Mew New throughout the world if I passed.” She spoke about the most difficult parts of the audition process and how she tried to change her facial expressions to convey the meaning of the lyrics. Despite being an amateur, wanting to pass the audition has been a great motivation for her, and she admitted to having a crush on Yui Ogura, a voice actress and idol. “I’ve practiced a lot, but I’ve never reached 100% yet. I’ll do my best today.”
Entry 888: Suisan. “My reason for the application is to change myself. I never took a risk in my life, but I wanted to take this opportunity as my last challenge.” She spoke about having no prior singing or dancing experience and making time to practice during school. “I love to express things,” she said, “so I want to show my bold action, dance, and movements.” She mentioned having aspirations of pursuing an anime-related job, such as a voice actress. “Believing in myself and my fans, I want to perform with confidence.”
Entry 2056: Karinto. “Since the first screening I was greatly supported by my fans. They brought me here. To show my appreciation, I’ll try to reach their expectations.” She spoke about her preparations process which included doing sit-ups to increase her flexibility. She said that she thought her notable feature was the type of voice she has and that she will do her best to make use of it. “I’ll enjoy myself so much that I can make you smile, so please keep watching me!”
During the program, Kameyama Toshiki spoke of what he’s looking for in an applicant, and that is how much they have grown and changed throughout each step of the audition. “What I focused on was whether I’d like to work with this person. We’re sort of looking for a partner for the long span project, so I have that perspective.” He also praised those who have been working earnestly.
The next episode will be released on November 12, 2020. With new episodes appearing on the 2nd, 12th, and 22nd of every month (presumably to keep with the kitty cat theming). The winner of the audition will be announced in a later program.
This is the first social media announcement to be released in English regarding the project, and the first video on the official Tokyo Mew Mew Youtube channel with English subtitles. The video can be found here.
Tokyo Mew Mew was first released as a manga in Nakayoshi magazine, appearing in issues from 2000-2003, and Tokyo Mew Mew a la mode through 2004.

axelle judges bl shows > 2gether
shitty summary: Tine is approached by Green, a guy who can’t seem to accept his rejection. After many tries, Tine resigns himself into asking Sarawat, the most popular guy at their university, to pretend to flirt with him so he can get rid of Green.
where to watch: youtube
grade: 8,5/10
pros:
- the acting was great, mainly from bright & win. win especially impressed me since it was his first series.
- the first ten episodes hit everything that makes me love a good romance which is pining and tension (which it has PLENTY of) and resulted in heartache for me which I adore & makes for the best bls in my opinion.
- even though when we really think about it the story isn’t that complex & you don’t have to pay close attention to enjoy it, the way the cliffhangers were done at the end of most of the episodes was really good... I’ve rarely been so hooked to watch the next episode bc here every single one of them ends before the most important moment haha! so while it was frustrating to watch live, it’s very entertaining & great from a business standpoint.
- this is probably my favorite use of music in a thai series. the way it focused on only one band (though it felt at times a bit too product placement-y) and all of their songs to follow this love story was freaking lovely. and it makes it so the series has one of the most iconic soundtracks which often makes for an iconic series or movie in itself.
- even though I was kinda scared bc bright & win give off super straight vibes lmao, I think they did pull of this ship and had great chemistry while still remaining very manly & conserving some of that ‘bro’ energy. it was quite original & changed from other bl series.
cons:
- omg the three last episodes suuuuuuucked! I’ve talked many times about the fact that many gmmtv series’ last two or three episodes are often weaker (which should be addressed bc it’s legit been going on for years & idk what gmmtv is smoking) than the rest of the show, but it’s the first time that it genuinely... kinda ruined the series for me? like I know for a fact that I will never rewatch the last three episodes of that show & that if I do a rewatch (which I’ll most probably will) I’ll just stop at ep 10. it’s hard to explain why, but for sarawatine these episodes were terrible. they just got together and eps 11&12 have this depressing atmosphere to them, like I remember clearly how much ep 11 depressed me after the beauty that was ep 10. and the last ep was just... rushed & felt unimportant compared to the first ten eps. nah I swear to god they really fucked up with this one.
- milphukong. yup, they’re a whole con by themselves. I don’t think people who weren’t in the fandom prior to 2gether understand how frustrating it is for drakefrank to keep getting either mediocre series or mediocre roles, but as someone who’s watched my tee as each ep aired I can guarantee you it is PEAK FRUSTRATION!!! like... I was literally the happiest when I saw they would get to be a ship again but their roles are just extremely mediocre. not even their incredible chemistry can save it lol. it was just really sad & disaheartening and one of the biggest con for me
- gunsmile’s role annoyed the fuck out of me. I’m a huge fan of his, I’ve been for a while since he’s been in a lot of the shows I’ve watched including my first ever thai series (sotus) and some of my very favorite thai series (3 will be free & love sick)... so seeing him get relegated to a background role where he overacted (bc the director asked him to, he’s never been like that before even in comedic roles) was very frustrating to me, especially after his role in 3 will be free that showed that the man clearly has a lot of talent. even jennie (his co-star in 3wbf) looked surprised & was cringing in her reactions to the show. idk I felt like this role was meant for a much smaller actor who’s just starting out and not someone who’s been in the industry since 2014 & clearly deserves more than making ridiculous faces behind sarawat.
- the time frame of the series is a bit weird tbh. like it’s not a huge deal but the fact that we cut directly from the time sarawatine get together to a few months later (something that, AGAIN, gmmtv loves to do... wow they do have a lot of weird habits lol) was kinda... like cutting the grass from under all of our feet? like we’ve waited ten eps for them to get together & we don’t even get to see their first moments as boyfriends? once again it’s not a huge deal bc gmmtv pulled the same thing for theory of love (my favorite thai bl) and I forgave them but still, when are they gonna learn???
- now this is the con that’s gonna be very nitpicky and I’m kinda sorry about that, but for the good majority of the episodes I didn’t enjoy the editing at all. if you compare 2gether with any other series on earth, you’ll realize that the way the scenes are cut is way too quick. for example, a normal series would cut twice throughout a line: CAMERA ON PERSON A “So you’re asking me” CAMERA ON PERSON B “on a date, uh?”... whereas 2gether does this: CAMERA ON PERSON A “So you’re” CAMERA ON PERSON B “asking me” CAMERA ON PERSON A “on a date” CAMERA ON PERSON B “uh?” I don’t know if it makes sense to you, but basically the way the scenes are cut genuinely gave me headaches & I noticed that in the last few episodes the editing got less choppy and a bit better, but yeah. go rewatch a few scenes and I’ll guarantee that you’ll notice it.
would I rewatch it: yes
top/bottom discourse: 0 - 1 - 2 - 3
(1 being implied, 2 being shown and 3 being said)
Overall, this show was good. I think I let the hype of it get me too excited for it which eventually got me let down by the last episodes but apart from that it was a really pleasant story. Even though I don’t think it necessarily deserves to be so much more known than other thai series, it does deserve some of its hype and I would recommend it.

Digging through the archives 1: The ReBoot drama
Hello and welcome to one of the first “subsections” of posts I am going to make on this tumblr for the sake of an easier overview. This one is titlted “Digging through the archives”, because it will always relate to something I will find by literally looking for some of the oldest “opinion” or personal related stuff about Dobson that there is. So think of this here less as me tackling his comics and more of my own version of what the Hypocrisy of Andrew Dobson does.
With that explanation out of the way, lets just briefly talk about Dobson and his idea of fan entitlement; If you have followed Dobson throughout the last year or so, you know he has a very low opinion on fans of the original She-Ra and He-Man, 80s cartoons in general and Star Wars, to the point he thinks the people behind it are all potential alt righters (link red flag comic) or basically man children.
Tumblr media
To anyone who knows Dobson however, it would be no surprise now to learn that he has a tendency to be the same kind of way to other people and creators. Like when he whined to an actual writer on a Frozen related property about the necessity of giving Elsa a girlfriend, which even resulted in Aaron Sparrow being involved at one point, a professional animator and comic writer on the Boom Comics related Darkwing Duck issues. A prime example on how Dobson will literally make himself also unsympathetic to the people he wants to work for/with.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But then there is what I found in relation to a little animated series by the name of ReBoot and that is really where both his entitlement and egotism kinda shine.
For those unaware: ReBoot was a computer animated adventure show produced by Mainframe Entertainment and ran from 1994 to 2001. It is actually listed as the first fully computer animated cartoon out there and is fondly remembered by a lot of people. Unfortunately, I myself have never watched it so I can’t give a “valid” opinion on it. All I have seen so far are clips on youtube but I will admit that what I have seen in them looks fun and intriguing, even if the animation at parts (especially in season 1 related content) has not aged that well. But hey, early computer animation, that is forgivable. And any media that manages to make an episode that is also in a way a huge tribute to Evil Dead of all things in a children cartoon is a big win for me.
youtube
Now, how is ReBoot connected to Dobson? Dobson has been a fan of ReBoot, a fact he made publicly known when in 2007 rumors of a continuation of ReBoot emerged. Something Dobson, again, the man who is pissed about the entitlement of She-Ra fans, has not been very happy about.
Tumblr media
But Dobson, what is so wrong about being “different” from the past? After all, let the past die! The original show had terrible artwork! And not everything back in the day was good, right?
Yeah, it is pretty obvious how his complaining and stands against “modern” fans ring pretty hollow when he himself acted as the entitled brat he thinks critics of new She-Ra and Thundercats Roar are, back in 2007 already. Also I honestly feel that at the very least the creators of that idea gave their fans still more “control” than Rian Johnson did. And we all know how much Star Wars suffered in terms of reputation because of it.
BTW, this webcomic continuation mentioned? It is actually not just a rumor that went nowhere, but one of the most fascinating aspects I found when reading up on ReBoot via Wikipedia. The idea was that of the five potential pitches (so again, there was variety given that even could have been expanded on) people could choose one that would be further adapted. Additionally the people behind the idea were looking for more active input by fans, giving people the chance to apply as artists working on it if they decided to submit samples people could vote on. Something Dobson jumped actually on. And tried to manipulate in his own favor
Tumblr media
The thing that catches my attention at first is how hyperbole Dobson is. Claiming the fate of the show is in their hands and treating voting on this thing like it’s a live or die situation, with pointlessly writing stuff in caps as if we are reading the headline of some trashy newspaper article. It just comes off less as someone who is a fan and more of a fanatic of the show. Second, I just find it hilarious that of all the plattforms online Dobson decided to post that “VERY IMPORTANT” information people should act immediately on, was deviantart. Did he genuinely expect people would flock to what he wrote in order to immediately do something about the vote? Deviantart even back then was mostly for posting fanart, few people read journals and even less people cared for ReBoot. I don’t know if the /co/ board of 4chan existed back in 2007 already, but he would have had more success posting on there and get the information out, than on dA.
Lastly, the shameless self promotion. Stating he does not care which pitch wins, when only three day prior he whined how they all suck and he wishes the show would be done justice by someone. That someone obviously being him, the person who is so hardcore as a fan, because he already waited 8 years just to watch season 3. Damned be any other artists or pitches that may be better or more popular than him, HE is the true messiah and that is his chance to shine. So don’t be “neutral” and judge fairly based on actual competence, talent and effort, just vote for him blindly or else Trump wins the second term and your beautiful nation turns into the fourth rei- I mean,  Dobson will be a very sad guy who has come to terms with the fact he is not talented enough to work on a reboot/continuation of his favorite children show.
Well, it seemed to have had some impact though, as four day later he posted this
Tumblr media
And obviously Dobson is pissed his favorite pitch did not win and instead of being grateful for the good ratings some of his artwork got he focuses instead on the fact that his Enzo and Megabyte pic had the lowest rating. Which in my opinion it kinda deserved. I mean, look at those artpieces:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Enzo is okayish looking but the rest? That is not Megabyte and a genuine background, it is a cola light version of the entire Ripley disaster with the Samus Artwork commission. Also, Enzo’s hands just look weird. His fingers more alien than they need to be and the position of his legs not really adjusting to how the hip is supposed to move. The comic sample page that Dobson drew being okay overall, aside of the fact that Enzo in one panel HAS FOUR INSTEAD OF FIVE FINGERS ON ONE HAND DESPITE HAVING FIVE FINGERS IN A PREVIOUS PANEL. I am also not really a fan of how Dobson puts emphasize on the word “FAN” and “PAGES” in the post, indicating he thinks he is a better and bigger fan than any of the people who submitted their entries too, off handedly praising them but also making it obvious he thinks he is the most fit for the job, because he can also “copy any artstyle” and adjust to the needs of his superiors. Yeah, sure. That’s why you are nowadays and with even more time and effort put into your work so “good” at imitating Ladybug, your comics look exactly like in the show…
Tumblr media
Now considering that Dobson does not have ReBoot under his resume and likely tried his best to bury any enthusiasm for it, you can imagine how this chance at being an official artist ended up.
Tumblr media
Not even much of a follow up or introspective in why he may have not won. His enthusiasm died within two days.
And honestly, I am surprised that as a result he did not fake depression and rage quit doing comics for a month or so as he did here and there.
And that is pretty much the end of the ReBoot drama, at least as far as I know.
If you are interested what happened with the comic project, here is what I managed to gather:
The project did actually not die in development, but “ReBoot: Arrival” would be reimagined under the name “Code of Honour” and be published online in three “issues” over the course of the next few months. The comic’s status as “canon” continuation of the show is however very much in the air, as quite a lot of people think it is something of a fanfiction, others think it is a good enough continuation that unfortunately still does not deliver on an “ultimate” ending of the franchise. That said, with additional plans like a movie trilogy never been realized and the “reboot” known as “ReBoot: The Guardian Code” having been perceived as an insult by fans and a disappointment by most audiences (which Dobson was surprisingly silent about) this comic seems to be the best thing fans can still hope for and read.
youtube
Yeah, I am not even kidding. The comic is still up. Here, have two links to independent pages if you want to either read it for the first time or revisit it for the sake of nostalgia.
As for Dobson, if he reads this, I just have one thing to say to you: Don’t you ever again try to whine about how entitled fanboys are, if you felt entitled enough yourself you tried to manipulate a competition in your own favor in the hope to become a writer and then exploit ReBoot for your own agenda and benefit.

New Dream/Angelic Dream - New Dream Appreciation Week - Day 4 | Hurt/Comfort
While I don’t have a specific Eugene/Rapunzel New Dream story, this one is still very New Dream-centric in its own way. Some may have seen it before but most have not. It’s very personal and dear to me and I kind of considered it appropriate, considering we’re coming upon a certain anniversary in just three days.....
“When Eugene called Rapunzel Sunshine, I felt that…”
Confession: I feel this each and every time Eugene says this. Especially since Sunshine is an actual nickname of mine. My heart skips a beat because….it’s what my fiancé used to call me. And I say “used to” because he passed away before we could get married. It’s high time I explained to everybody the reason why I glommed onto Tangled the Series for dear life…since I’ve been putting it off for the past 4 months. Got less than a week left til the series finale….. and this series came along right when I needed it.
When I began getting deeper into Tangled fandom, it wasn’t until around later October 2019. I was feeling a real hankering for more of Eugene Fitzherbert’s singing voice. Confession 2: Until Autumn 2019, I had NO IDEA that Zachary Levi had voiced Flynn Rider, both speaking AND singing!! At the time, the main thing that drew me to Flynn was his singing voice. I never forgot that. Like so many others, I fell in love with Tangled’s soundtrack and specially with “I See the Light” and “I’ve Got a Dream”, etc.
Confession 3: I’ve had a crush on Zachary Levi ever since the first episode of Chuck. Even though Chuck’s social and emotional insecurities are a rather enormously huge humorous part of the plot, the way Zac portrayed that anxiety and other types of raw emotions were real. He possesses a markedly rare ability to elicit laughter and tears within the same scene, and sometimes within the very same moment of a scene. While it’s an exceptional gift to exhibit that ability, it nearly always means that underneath it all, the reason why you can perceive this type of emotion so plainly from any given actor is because they’ve experienced those feelings on a personal level in their private lives. Nobody ever told me this, it’s something I learned through observation. It’s true of writers too…and composers. The best way to telegraph emotion through a given medium to someone else is often by having initially having experienced those emotions for yourself. It wouldn’t be until years after Chuck began that Zac would feel comfortable enough to share his mental health history with his fans…and we’d begin to learn just how deep he truly is.
With all of this in mind, I was perusing YouTube with the intent of finding more of “Flynn Rider’s singing voice” and imagine my shock & delight when a whole bunch of Tangled the Series and Tangled Before Ever After songs showed up in my search!!! Then I Looked up the fan wikia only to discover that it was none other than our dear Zachary Levi who had voiced Eugene Fitzherbert!!! I got positively thrilled and was already on Cloud Nine before I’d even begun watching it. Despite Disney’s, uh, thorny history with spinoffs, I couldn’t help but be excited as I learned most of the original cast had returned as well!!
I queued up Tangled Before Ever After and was instantly transported, instantly fell in love. I truly did not expect to be as drawn to Eugene as I was….in the film version, I wasn’t so sure about him….but I gravitated toward him immediately in the series. At first, I really didn’t know why. The feeling seemed familiar somehow and again….I didn’t know why. I couldn’t figure it out.
As I watched the first few episodes, I was constantly live-gushing (that’s akin to live-tweeting, only over Messenger instead) about the show with my friend Samara as I watched; Sammeh is also a Tangled superfan. I was continually talking about how it was the Disney’s best spinoff I had ever seen, how I was shocked that they cast SO MANY original cast members, original songwriters, etc. I can unequivocally state I haven’t loved an animated series this much in my life, even as a child. Then I was describing how much I could not get over the healthy, loving relationship portrayed between Eugene and Rapunzel. As I sat describing it, I suddenly said, “Oh my gosh. Sammeh…..”  And it caused me to freeze. Even though Sam had known my former fiancé just as long as we’d known each other, I didn’t know if Sam would think I was nuts for suggesting that certain aspects of Eugene’s personality reminded me of Anthony. After a long pause, I typed as much to her, “I don’t know if I should say this to you…..” yet I needn’t have worried, because Sam completed my thought for me: “You’re gonna say he’s like Anthony.” I was so surprised I said, “YES!!! How did you know I was gonna say that?!”
”Easy. Because I’ve seen it too.”
In spite of myself, I wept after she said that. So I wasn’t just imaging it. I’m getting teary-eyed now just thinking about it.
The love between Eugene and Rapunzel reminds me of the love I had with my Anthony. Anthony was not intimidated by my inner strength, we took turns rescuing each other, he was willing to listen to me talk for hours and hours and hours and I did the same with him, we took turns forever teasing one another, we couldn’t ever stay angry with each other, we always talked things out. He was forever encouraging my talents and dreams. We hung out with an unlikely, rag-tag group of friends. And especially the way Eugene caresses Rapunzel’s face, kisses her forehead….and spontaneously says _the most heart-melting romantic things….._that was just like my Anthony. And of course, he called me “The light in my life….My Sunshine.”
Now….while Anthony didn’t die while rescuing me from an enemy, his was a sacrifice of a different kind….for shortly before he passed, he was experiencing far too much mental strife….never once did he self-disclose this, though….and unfortunately, we didn’t learn until after the fact. It became apparent he felt his only way out was to take his own life.
Needless to say, I crawled into a very dark place after he died. I tried very hard not to….but over the prior 18 months I’d already lost so very much. I’d lost a job, loss of place to live, for months, I was being literally starved by my abusive-prior-ex-boyfriend ….I just shriveled up inside due to self-doubt, self-hatred, and I couldn’t speak about anything.
Even from 1800 miles away at the time, Anthony managed to be the one person to draw it all out of me. (I was estranged from most family at the time – with good reason) and I told him everything….and he listened to all of it, never interrupting, never judging, never being anything but his amazing self. Somehow, after two years of friendship and listening to one another, Anthony had fallen in love with me….even though all of the garbage I told him. To this day, I do not know what he saw in me. But something inside knew that if I could just strive to put good things surrounding that fateful date, its anniversary would lose its sting and I could heal and live the way Anthony would’ve wanted me to live. Although I’d described some of the lowlights, I’ve definitely had moments in my life that have filled me with much love and light.
I’ve been so very scared to type all of this out, put it all out there, for fear of being…..judged. Ridiculed. You know how the internet can be……naturally there’s a lot more to this story that I would like to share with you yet this has already become prohibitively lengthy.
The whole point is to say that it’s been nearly 14 long years since I last heard Anthony’s light sweet southern drawl. And through the magical medium of Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure, this show effectively allowed me the heartwarming and bittersweet chance to feel a small part of his love within my life again. I don’t know quite how it happened….but happen it did….right when I needed it. Anthony and I were very flirty and silly and ridiculous as a couple, just the way you would expect two twitter-pated people to be….the way Eugene calls Rapunzel “Sunshine” and caresses her cheek….the way he looks at her ….with his heart is full of so much love that it touches his warm brown eyes….those things remind me most of Anthony. Hopefully you can see why it’s been so difficult to, ah, self-disclose this information about myself.
So…..thank you for that from the bottom of my heart, Disney, Chris Sonnenburg, Shane Prigmore, Tara Nicole Whitaker, Tom Caulfield, Stephen Sandoval, Zachary Levi, Mandy Moore, Eden Espinoza, James Iglehart, Jeremy Jordan, Kevin Kleisch, Alan Menken, Glenn Slater, Anna Lencioni, and anybody else whom Ive missed…..

Explaining JSE Ego Lore with the Hero’s Journey
Definitely not inspired by the very similarly named video by Brian David Gilbert, which you can definitely not find and watch for yourself here, that will definitely not give you some context which may be helpful for understanding this post.
First of all, quick disclaimer. I will be using a shortened version of the Hero’s Journey, narrowed down to seven points from the original twelve:
Introduce the Protagonist: Who is the most important person on this journey and what was their life like prior to the start of the conflict?
Start the Journey: I don’t care what the conflict is at this point, as long as it gives the protagonist some sort of motivation/goal.
(This is also where you might have a Disney Villain Song if we’re playing with dramatic irony)
Make Friends: More characters yay! Technically they don’t all have to be friends, as long as they’re relevant to the hero and their journey.
Midpoint: Oh no! The journey just got a lot more complicated. The villain reveals themselves, potential plot twists ensue, conflict intensifies, etc.
Shenanigans: Protag now tries to deal with the implications of the changed conflict, addressing the problems internally and externally.
Final Confrontation: Protag responds decisively to the new conflict, usually with the big bad doing their “you cannot defeat me” monologue.
Fallout: Either the protag wins or loses the final confrontation, and now they’ve got to deal with the consequences.
Now, let’s review the lore:
The Setup (2016):
The JSE Ego lore began in 2016 with the first appearances of Antisepticeye, a glitching figure that seemed to either want to take control over or separate itself from Jack’s body. Over the course of October 2016, this character took the community by storm, culminating on Halloween, when Anti slit Jack’s throat, rose up in his own body, and gave a speech blaming the viewers for their support and culpability in his own rise to power.
Note that, prior to October 2016, three videos featuring Jackieboy Man, Marvin the Magnificent, and Doctor Henrik von Schneeplestein were uploaded onto the channel. However, these characters were not intended to be “egos” at this point, so these videos function less like introductions and more like backstories. In a book or film, the events of these videos would be revealed over time to the protagonist as they get to know these characters.
The Escalation (2017):
In 2017, focus shifted from Antisepticeye to the aforementioned Doctor Henrik von Schneeplestein. Over the course of the year, these two characters took turns in the spotlight. Anti had a number of dramatic appearances in videos of scary games and even gave a monologue at PAX East in March, while the Good Doctor was simply dealing with the day-to-day challenges of his questionably legitimate medical practice and struggling marriage in his own series of videos.
In April, another new character was introduced: Chase Brody. A stunt youtuber struggling to maintain both his channel and marriage, Chase’s separation from his wife and children leads him to depression, alcohol abuse, and eventually attempting suicide. Thankfully, we later learn that Doctor Schneeplestein knew Chase at the time, and was able to save his friend’s life.
Things only get darker from here. In June, Doctor Schneeplestein's personality shifts from that of a jovial (if slightly incompetent) doctor to that of a mad scientist who gleefully inflicts horrible deaths upon his patients and studies the results.
Two months later, Jack, who had survived Anti’s original attack thanks to the Good Doctor, is being treated by Schneeplestein for an unknown illness. During the procedure, Anti possesses the doctor’s body, seemingly killing Jack once again before giving another long monologue to the camera. After a year of frequent solo videos, Doctor Schneeplestein does not appear again in 2017.
On Halloween, a fifth ego is created, once again by accident. Notably, this ego was originally intended to just be Anti in disguise, but the community latched onto the character so much that he became official. A silent movie actor with magical abilities that seemingly include time travel, Jameson Jackson was taken over by Anti in a manner very similar to the previous year’s Halloween video.
Over the course of late 2017 and continuing into 2018, both Anti and Jackieboy Man made appearances on the channel, though the latter has since been declared non-canon.
Finally, in December 2017, a charity livestream became the most notorious Antisepticeye appearance in community history: The Overnightwatch. While no new lore was revealed, the grueling, 18-hour vigil brought the community together on a global scale as “live” camera feeds showed creepy, glitchy occurrences take over the studio under Anti’s command.
The Plot Thickens (2018-2019):
From this point on, things start getting complicated. After months of nothing but a few extremely cryptic references to the still-missing doctor, the relatively calm April showers decided to forgo the flowers, instead ushering in Mayhem 2018. Featuring the outright returns of Chase Brody, Doctor Schneeplestein, and Antisepticeye, hidden appearances of Marvin the Magnificent and Jameson Jackson were also discovered in videos over the course of the month.
However, while these appearances gave us clues as to the egos’ whereabouts, the community was left largely in the dark in regards to the greater plot. What little was discovered seemed to imply that Jack has been in a coma since the events of the previous Halloween, with Chase being Anti’s newest target.
After Mayhem, there were a number of glitchy moments in videos that implied Anti’s control, but nothing concrete occurred until December, just over a year since the Overnightwatch. Appearing at the end of a video without his signature glitches, Anti once again blamed the community for his continued influence in a chilling monologue ending with, “Now let’s move on to the next phase.”
After nearly a year of scattered glitches and suspicious references to previous Antisepticeye appearances, in October 2019, videos featuring Chase Brody and Doctor Schneeplestein appeared on the channel. With high production quality hinting at a cohesive, science fiction storyline, the stage is set for more egos to appear in the days leading up to the third Halloween since 2016.
With that out of the way, let’s go to the Hero’s Journey:
(or, at least, my shorter version)
Jack stated in 2019 that Chase is the protagonist of this story, but I want to set that aside for a moment. Don’t worry, we’ll come back to it. For now, let’s look at each section individually and try to identify who the hero of this story is, and what roles the other characters play in this tale.
The Setup is 100% Anti’s journey. At the time, he was the protagonist (note that not all protagonists are good people; they’re just the center of the story arc), but he doesn’t undergo a full hero’s journey. Instead, 2017 functions as the setup arc for a villain. Anti starts the journey by simply wanting to get into/out of Jack’s body in various videos, makes friends through us, the community who latched onto every new appearance, and actually initiates the midpoint himself by attacking Jack on Halloween.
Anti never finishes his hero’s journey, so he’s not our long-term protagonist. Instead, by creating the conflict facing the other characters for the rest of the story, Anti is ready to assert himself as the villain of the JSE Ego Universe.
The Escalation seems to introduce Henrik as our new protagonist. While a seemingly ordinary doctor, Henrik starts the journey by saving Jack’s life and, possibly as a result, stars in his own series on the channel. References to various characters in the doctor’s personal and professional life, especially Chase Brody, are the making friends part of this arc.
Meanwhile, Anti’s continued appearances on the channel and the PAX speech function as a “Disney Villain Song” for Henrik’s story. While the viewers know that, by saving Jack and starring on the channel, Henrik has gotten involved in more than he bargained for, our protagonist does not until its too late. The midpoint occurs when Anti takes over Henrik and kills Jack a second time.
Like Anti, Henrik is unable to finish his hero’s journey. However, with his close ties to the conflict, relative success in opposing the villain’s plans, and connections to our true protagonist, Henrik is likely the mentor-figure for Chase in the JSE Ego Universe. Like characters such as Gandalf or Dumbledore, Henrik is seemingly more capable and experienced in this fight, saving the protag’s life on multiple occasions, yet leaves the conflict unfinished.
Let’s look at The Plot Thickens with Chase as the protagonist. After Henrik saves his life, Chase seems to be content sitting on the sidelines until the doctor is taken by Anti*, leaving Chase to watch over a comatose Jack alone. This sudden shouldering of the burden is the start of the journey for Chase, with the events of Mayhem 2018 as his major challenges.
*If we wanted to get technical, you could say that this constitutes the “Call to Adventure,” “Refusal of the Call,” and “Meeting the Mentor” steps of the full Hero’s Journey, with the events of Mayhem (specifically TIE and Dark Silence) being “Crossing the Threshold.”
We next see Chase being summoned to an unknown location, presumably alongside other egos. Depending on the intentions of this mysterious teleportation force, this would probably be making friends, with the reveal of WHY someone is causing said teleportation certainly constituting the midpoint of Chase’s arc as the protagonist.
From here, well, who knows? We don’t know how that midpoint will play out, nor what the final confrontation will be at the end of it.
BUT WHAT ABOUT DECEMBER 2017 AND 2018??
And that’s the question, isn’t it?
Throughout the JSE Ego Lore, it’s repeatedly emphasized that we, as the community, are also a character. Anti has addressed us directly on numerous occasions, notably without any other egos present in December 2017 and 2018.
Could we be the protagonist? No. But we are certainly something.
There are eight different character archetypes in the hero’s journey to choose from here, and we already know who a few people are:
Hero: Chase
Mentor: Henrik
Ally:  ??
Herald: Jack (he’s the reason any of them are involved/exist at all!)
Trickster: ??
Shapeshifter: ??
Guardian: ??
Shadow (aka Villain): Anti
It’s impossible to tell yet what role Marvin, JJ, and Jackieboy Man will take. They all could fit the staunch loyalty of the ally, comic relief of the trickster, or the voice of uncertainty of the guardian. As for the shapeshifter, I think Marvin and JJ both could fit this dubiously trustworthy archetype. As for ourselves, my money is on the shapeshifter or guardian.
So did this actually teach me anything about the ego lore to come?
No. Much like the great Brain David Gilbert before me, my results were inconclusive at best and a rambling mess at worst. However, I still think this was a valuable exercise in analyzing the role of these characters and refreshing my knowledge of the ego lore to date. With Jack now working on a “JCU,” who knows? This sort of analysis might become more and more valuable.

For the first time ever, the Toonami versions of OVA1/2, Universe, and Tokyo are available online! On their respective archive.org pages you can access each episode easily.
Watch now: OVA1/2, Tenchi Universe, Tenchi in Tokyo.
For users who keep up with contemporary anime communities, we also have an upload for the entire run available on Nyaa.
It’s been quite a journey in getting these episodes from analog to digital. If you’re interested in reading about the process of how these almost lost-to-time edits came into our hands and how we’ve gone about preserving them before the tapes rot, then sit back and enjoy the story below!
Part 1: Toonami – A Love Story.
Tenchi Muyo! and Toonami are tied together like the red thread of fate often times referenced in many East Asian myths. For those who aren’t aware, Toonami was a programming block on the Cartoon Network channel. Starting in 1997, it did one thing for anime that no other channel in the English-speaking world had ever done: showcased anime during “PrimeTime” (In North America at least, this was 4pm to 7pm Eastern Standard time). Before the internet, having this block of time meant having the most eyes on your product, meaning exposure was huge. Oftentimes whoever got on this block, regardless of the channel, was “made.”
However, it wouldn’t be until mid 1999, with a soft-rebranding, a new host, and an almost entirely anime-focused block, that Toonami would take over the world.
And on July 3rd, 2000, an entire generation was introduced to Tenchi Muyo! for the first time.
youtube
- The now legendary two minute Toonami promo.
Thanks to the efforts of Jason DeMarco, Sean Akins, Gill Austin, Sean Polinski, and the rest of the Toonami crew, the “Toonami generation,” still to this day, is the largest block of Tenchi Muyo! fans. Whether it was Toonami US, UK, or Australia. Tenchiforum is a testament to this fact. I personally would not be here were it not for Toonami, so to say that fans of Tenchi Muyo! hold Toonami in a high regard is an understatement.
I had always wanted to somehow, some way, get the Toonami version of Tenchi up for everyone to see again, but my old Toonami VHS recordings were long gone, and I figured trying to piece together the Toonami version from other people’s tapes would just be too hard with how many episodes were broadcast, that was until… 2012
In mid-to-late 2012, I found out that Pioneer actually released a home video version of what was shown on Toonami. It was simply released as “Tenchi Muyo!” in those big, white, clam shell VHS cases (that most people probably remember for old Disney movies). I felt as though I had struck gold! I was able to get a hold of the first two OVA, and was able to rip them to my computer.
Tumblr media
- Vol. 1 & Vol. 5 of “Tenchi Muyo!” – No distinction was made that they were separate series.
Though I was high on my endorphin-induced nostalgia, I ran into a couple of unforeseen problems.
First and foremost, the equipment I was using was not great. I used an old StarTech composite to USB dongle and the software that came with it. While this isn’t necessarily bad at first glance (it doesn’t support Windows 10), I had no experience whatsoever in the field of digital transfer. While I think my rips were okay for the time, I knew even then that they were too low of bit-rate and the quality of the rips suffered for it.
Because I also had no VCR at the time that had S-Video output, I was only able to output from composite, which meant the whopping 240p equivalent VHS tapes look fuzzier than they probably should. (I realize that VHS is technically an analog format, meaning that a 1:1 equivalent digital representation is hard to pin down or that someone might argue that it did technically output 480i over composite, but basically it was 240p.)
Another problem was the software itself, I had no idea about Virtualdub, AmaRecTV, or other helpful capture software, so I only recorded at a lower bit-rate, again producing an inferior quality rip.
I also ran into the problem of showcasing the videos. Funimation (who now owns the vast majority of the Tenchi Muyo! franchise in North America) had finally started really cracking down on people uploading videos to Youtube. Even though my videos were not completely the same, the algorithm immediately flagged and blocked them. This led me to uploading the videos to Facebook. I had to cut them in half because of Facebook’s restriction to roughly only 12 minutes of video. Somehow in the process, some of the videos had audio drop out for a minute or two, and for some the audio dropped out completely.
Arguably the biggest blow though, was when I learned that this set of Toonami tapes was incomplete. Pioneer stopped producing the Toonami version for home video after they finished releasing Universe. Meaning, the only way to get the Toonami version of Tenchi in Tokyo, was hope that someone, somewhere,  had taped it 11 years earlier.
While Tenchi in Tokyo has been getting more appreciation from fans as of late – thanks in part to most newer entries in the Tenchi OVA sucking harder than a vacuum – in the year 2000, it was the black sheep of the Tenchi Muyo! franchise. So expecting fans to have recorded any of it, let alone the entire series, was the long shot of all long shots. But even still, I made a post on the forum in 2013 asking if anyone knew anyone that might have anything.
Naturally, no one had any leads, and all of these previous problems meant that this project would, frustratingly, have to be shelved indefinitely.
Or at least, that’s what I thought.
Part 2: Deferred Dreams Don’t Die.
On April 5th, 2019, a person by the name of Talos dropped into our Discord server, and posted an introduction. Like so many, they had gotten into Tenchi through Toonami, but what would change everything, was this.
Tumblr media
I couldn’t believe what I was reading, someone actually had it!
Instinctively, I reached out to Talos via PM to ascertain how to go about acquiring these tapes, and admittedly, to see how legit this claim actually was. Because the fact of the matter is, when you’ve been around Tenchi fandom as long as I have, you’ll quickly realize the best bullshitters in the world come from this fandom.
But Talos was more than the genuine article! They sent over pictures and an incredibly detailed analysis of the quality of their tapes, watching through them all again to prove to me that their claim was valid.
It can’t be said enough that this all would not be possible without Talos, their willingness to work with me and send me their own personal tapes that they’ve kept for almost two decades just goes to show how awesome they are and how much they care about the fandom.
So the deal was struck, and the dream that laid deferred for almost six years lived again.
Tumblr media
- A time capsule from another era.
But with dreams from the past, come the demons that plagued them way back when. I still only had the setup I once had, and at this time I was really trying to be tight with my finances for a number of different reasons, but this opportunity was too good to pass up, I wasn’t going to let this dream go, even if it wasn’t perfect.
Talos’ tapes showed up, and I rolled up my sleeves.
So I put in the first tape, the first seven episodes of Tokyo, into the old VCR I used to originally rip the Pioneer tapes, a JVC HR-VP650U….
Tumblr media
And static…
Or rather, a tape that would play for 3 seconds, then immediately drop to static.
This wouldn’t work.
I then tried my other VCR, a Sony SLV-N50 from the mid-to-late 90’s that I was able to “fix” by removing the old Android Kikaider tape that got stuck in there many years prior.
It worked!…..but…..not all that well.
While it did actually play the tape relatively smoothly, the colors were completely washed out in comparison to the JVC, and it had this weird color flickering that was particularly noticeable when black backgrounds were on screen. (This was not unique to this tape, it did it with everything I put in there.)
As much as it pained me, there was no way I was going to rip it with this setup.
So the hunt began for not just a replacement VCR, but one that was high quality and recommended among enthusiasts for digital transfer. Which meant research and long winding rabbit holes of non-answers and vagueness, and unfortunately, money.
Without a doubt, the de facto list of best VCRs for transferring comes from digitalFAQ.com. This list is not only informative but gives you a broad range of ones to look for in the event you can’t find an “elite” one. However, this list has also become the de facto list used by people who are hawking their sets on eBay to try and get every penny from enthusiasts and new-comers as possible.
After three frustrating weeks of losing bid wars on eBay, someone finally put up one of the good sets, the JVC SR-V10U. I quickly sent them what I thought was a reasonable but not bank-breaking offer….
Tumblr media
And they accepted! The beast was finally mine.
Immediately upon unwrapping and testing it, the quality difference between what I had then and what I was looking at now was staggering. The SR-V10U had beautiful color, while having the incredible ability to stabilize the old tapes with its TBC (Time Base Corrector), as well as onboard Video Stabilization option. Combined with the ability to output video via the superior S-Video cable, I now had something that, despite its age and typical old VHS wear, was way better than I could have imagined.
Part 3: No Need for Nostalgia.
You’re probably thinking to yourself “Dagon, why go through the trouble? The OVA has a beautiful Blu-ray release, and Universe and Tokyo have pretty decent DVD releases. Why would you ever want to rip old VHS tapes of an inferior quality release that was in some cases censored?”
Tumblr media
- The now famous Toonami “bikinis”.
Because this version of Tenchi Muyo! is a piece of history. Not only is it a piece of Tenchi history, but a piece of Toonami history as well. Being able to preserve this in the best quality possible is being able to point to future generations and say “This is why I’m here.”
For a lot of us it’s about taking us back to a simpler time, grade school, high school, university. Taking us back to a time before the internet was what it is today.
So now we can, after almost 20 years, re-watch the version of Tenchi Muyo! that brought so many of us joy and wonder.

morimocchi replied to your post “also, I haven’t been able to watch any more versions of little women...”
theres a little women webseries???
Short response: yes, it’s called The March Family Letters, it has 50 episodes all available on youtube, and some other things that pop up along the way, it was done in 2014 and ended on 2015, I enjoyed it a lot.
Now for the long response, because I think it warrants one, for those who want to know the context...
At the time it was released, TMFL didn’t have the love it deserved.
When the webseries started, it was to be released in another channel, with another actress as Jo (though the one that ended up being it in is really good!) but then Cherrydale got Pemberley Digital (of Lizzie Bennet Diaries fame, who also made other webseries) to distribute it.
At the time, I wasn’t on board with that decision and I remember I posted that. I liked where TMFL was going as a small Canadian production and I didn’t fully trust PD to make it right and also didn’t think the PD audience was the right one for the series. I posted about it at the time and received an anon message telling me that PD was only to distribute it and they weren’t actually producing it, to which I responded that I still believed there was going to be an impact. I think time proved me right. Which is a pity.
There are a lot of unwarranted negative comments throughout the videos from PD fans. People nitpicking choices, acting, direction and, at the time, a lot of the decisions on representation as well (let’s remember this was 2014). The first video alone has a lot of hate in the comments, some are just vitriol.
Meanwhile, another Cherrydale production with some of the same actors and also lesbian characters, a webseries based on The Three Musketeers, was released on KindaTV. KindaTV which had, some months prior, started releasing Carmilla. Needless to say the audience was entirely different, and a series like the ones Cherrydale was doing did a lot better in a channel alongside something like Carmilla.
The problems with Pemberley Digital were many at the time, but mostly that they could never really escape the shadow of what LBD had been.
LBD really changed the game in the literary webseries landscape, it wasn’t the first but it was the most well known and, to this day, people recreate its format with other literary classics using it as a base.
But LDB had something none of them have, which is the fact that it was born, as an idea, before the genre was settled in as it is now. It was chosen to be made that way because it fit, it wasn’t something forced to fit the format.
And another thing LBD did was take a genre that could be made with little to no resources, that didn’t need much to be good, but they made it with A LOT of resources, A LOT of quality and A LOT of production, setting the bar SUPER HIGH for every single thing that would come after it. Let’s remember Hank Green (a 2012 Hank Green, at that) was producing.
There were series that had similar production levels but never a book as good as that one. Others that had good writing but the actors weren’t professional enough or the production cost too high for them. Others had issues with the format and tried to make them vlogs because it was what was being done and not necessarily because it fit the book they were adapting...
LBD wasn’t perfect by any means, but it set the bar very high. And the ones who were most aware of said bar were the PD audience.
Releasing the series through PD gave people expectations. Not necessarily of quality, because I think TMFL is very good, but of the type of content. KindaTV’s audience was more willing to accept lesbian characters, trans characters, ace characters and so on. They were more open-minded about what to change or leave in. PD audiences were expecting a re-telling as close to the original as LBD, in which the biggest changes (Lydia’s amazing storyline) were sort of “optional”.
And people never understood that TMFL wasn’t made by PD. They thought that like Sanditon or Emma Approved, it was a PD production, and put everything on them, erasing the work of those who were actually doing the show.
When I go to watch a webseries based on a book from any other place, I know what I’m getting into. I may or may not like it, but I take it for what it is, considering where it was made and by whom. I don’t judge series made by individual fans like I judge those made by big producing companies, or the ones made in the US like the ones from Finland, and so on.
I honestly feel that TMFL could have continued had it received more support. Both from the audience and from its “network”. Just like KindaTV supported their other show. They commented on people’s questions on when it was going to be back by asking them to share the videos and spread the word, but it wasn’t enough.
So, if you watch it, I hope you see it under the light of it being a small production from a Canadian group that tried really hard and got less than what they deserved.
I think time, sadly, proved me right about the choice of PD not being the right one, even if their audience post LBD was the biggest.

RATE THE EPISODE 481 Responses
Tumblr media
The final episode of the first half of S3 was another banger with positive reactions. Compared to earlier in the season when manga readers seemed more dissatisfied with the adaptation, we are happy to see that the final episodes of the arc turned out to be a much more positive experience!
Considering this episode was essentially just the calm before the storm, I was pleasantly entertained by it. Not the best episode because not a whole lot happened, but still it did what it needed to do.
I was super worried they would change something in this episode but thank Ymir-sama it's okay.
IT WAS AWESOME AND THAT ENDING IS ONE OF THE BEST THING THIS ANIME HAS EVER MADE!
This episode was so good! And funny! And angsty at the end! All the ingredients that make a good AOT episode
Very good, the preview was spooky and the whole episode had humor to lighten the mood, some emotional stuff and High Anxiety Cliffhangers to finish us off. Its gonna be a long 6 months.
HOW WOULD YOU RATE THE FIRST HALF OF SEASON 3 AS A WHOLE? 481 Responses
Tumblr media
Overall, the first half of season three was satisfying for manga reading poll takers despite the changes.
All in all, absolutely stunning season. From the bottom of my heart, thank you WIT.
It was a really good episode. It followed manga perfectly. Every ep. of Uprising should has been like that. Too bad it wasn't, that why I rated the whole series pretty lowly. Honestly, I expected something better. But that was fine, not the worst. Yet, I would have changed a lot.
Really good way to end this half of the season. Can't wait to see the next half. It was nice to see a "calm before the storm" episode.
It was a brilliant idea to end the first part of season 3 right there, by doing this we were given proper construction to this arc.
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE SEASON TAKING A BREAK UNTIL APRIL? 481 Responses
Tumblr media
About 37% of respondents are sad to see the anime take a break, but nearly half of voters are fine with the break stating that it’s not too bad of a wait, with some who are even looking forward to the breather for a bit (we’re looking forward to having a good rest as well although we will miss the anime!).
I'm okay with it since it means that we will a get a really well made RtS arc. But they really should've said that the break was going to be this long earlier. Or just called it season 4
Waiting is something we SnK fandom know how to do, unfortunately
As a manga reader it's easy to not be too upset since we'll have plenty of chapters during that time.
It's nice to get a breather before shit hits the fan.
I don’t mind waiting 6 months when I know it means the animation will look a lot nicer as a result
I feel like i would have been less upset if they just told us from the start how its gonna be... I hated the uncertainty
If it means a fantastic second cour then I'm all for it. I mean my life is empty and I wish I were dead, but other than that I've accepted it!
6 months for preparing myself to let Erwin rest in peace
I AM NOT READY FOR RTS THIS IS LITERALLY THE FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO A HIATUS WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WIT
WAIT Studio
Does Annie have some space next to her for the next 6 months?
WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING SCENES WERE YOUR FAVORITES? 480 Responses
Tumblr media
The Survey Corps’ sendoff was the most favorite moment of the episode, followed closely by Eren and Jean’s nostalgic fight. Levi and Erwin’s talk after the meeting made it to third most favorite scene of the episode, followed closely behind by Eren, Armin and Mikasa’s conversation. Everyone losing their minds over meat was another favorite.
Erwin was so perfect, I loved his little laugh, I thought the whole interaction with him and Levi was done so well... god, I'm gonna miss him so much, it actually hurts.
Good breather episode, comedy gold with the dinner scenes, and the send-off was just as fun as it was touching. Also, the extra scene was creepy and great, but I hope anime-only watchers don't spoil themselves trying to find the meaning to it...
I think they did a really good work with the Erwin x Leviv talk, and EMA talk... Since enfatizing Erwin's reasons, and showing Armin's, It became more clear Levi's choice in future
I loved EMA talk... it made me pretty sad because of the events which now are taking place in the manga. That was good to see them together in the anime.
My Eruri shipping heart was in tatters, I tell you. I've been looking forward to the ""I'll break your legs"" scene for ages now, and shit, watching it was a literal punch to the gut. Erwin's beautiful roar of victory on the wall, his final ""SUSUME"" just... I was in awe.
Sasha nomming on Jean’s hand was even funnier animated
The 104th dinner scene was just perfect! It's been so long since we had a scene of such warmhearted camaraderie, it really brought back all my season 1 feels for the babies. Beautifully done.
Overall great Episode, really liked how they foreshadowed Erwins Demise and his conversation with Levi, EMA talk was great too, and the serumbowl scene made for an amazing cliffhanger
DID THE GLITCHED ENDING SCARE YOU? 483 Responses
Tumblr media
The abrupt reminder that SNK is a horror anime definitely seemed to work!  The majority of people were scared by the ending at least a little bit, and some were thoroughly terrified.
"Blink and you'll miss it" my a**
Honestly it reminded me of how horrid the show actually is. I forget it's not all cute and funny scenes with a tinge of "yikes" that happened, but instead vice versa
I knew it was coming in the ED but didn't know WHEN and I was just anticipating it like a dark corridor in a horror movie XD
Moreso that scare me, it got under my skin and just stayed in my head the rest of the day.
Scare is not the right word. The option I'm looking for is FUCKING WRECKED
I learned that apparently a lot of you watch shit alone in the dark. But to answer the question, no, not at all.
It thrilled me to see them cleverly setting up the next half of the season this way
Only the Levi's distorted "you guys". The glitched ending was awesome
I saw some screencaps of it prior to watching so I was somewhat prepared but it was way creepier than i thought it would be, it spooked me
It wasn't actually SCARY, but I fucking loved it. So twisted and creepy
rip ears in that ending, it makes for some great youtube reactions though lol
Well, mark me down as scared and horny
SHOULD ZACKLEY’S ART BE REALIZED? 478 Responses
Tumblr media
We suppose the real question is, when will Zackley’s “art” stop becoming something we ask about? :P All in all, most of you agree that it should not be seen or talked about. 21% of you are still finding humor in it.
HOW MUCH DID YOU ENJOY THE SEQUENCE OF EREN AND JEAN FIGHTING? 483 Responses
Tumblr media
Most of the viewers enjoyed Eren and Jean’s antics with 84% rating the scene with a 4 out of 5 or higher.
Mikasa letting them fight and not dragging Eren way is the best part! It's such an important character development for her. Also this Episode was full of parallels to their training days. Great episode.
Eren and Jean bringing the Drama™ (as expected of Eren and Jean)
THE SURVEY CORPS HAS NEVER EXPERIENCED A SEND-OFF LIKE THEY DID IN THIS EPISODE - FAVORITE PART OF THIS SCENE? 481 Responses
Tumblr media
The surreal experience of getting a positive send-off like this made Erwin’s smile and shout the overwhelming winner here, and for good reason!  A smaller portion of respondents enjoyed Springlestein being themselves and a few called out Levi’s face in the comments:
All of it. Because it will be the first and the last time we'll see it
YYYYEEEEEEEAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH
Levi looking at screaming Erwin like "WTF Erwin"
Hange smile
LEVI'S SOFT LOOK
I like the manga version better because Levi's smile was softer there
Levi's expression when Erwin did his triumphant shout.
literally everything about it was perfect
WOULD YOU LET LEVI BREAK YOUR LEGS? 480 Responses
Tumblr media
While 58% of respondents cannot understand why anybody would want their legs broken by Levi, a small percentage were even asking for it.
THE EPISODE WENT EXACTLY AS THE ORIGINAL MANGA! 478 Responses
Tumblr media
So, the story behind this one is that one of the pollsters posted this “question” on our original document as a joke while another one of us was at work. When the one at work got off, they put the question onto the poll form while the person who created the “question” was not online, not realizing it was meant to be an unpublished joke. This was completely overlooked during the final proofread. It was never actually intended to make it onto the poll but since one of us always tries to rush through things, here we are! In any case, we hope you guys had a good laugh, because we all collectively lost it when we realized the mistake much too late!
wow y'all throwin shade with this Q huh
Yes, it is Erwin's birthday celebration after all
Glad that Erwin and the crowd’s screaming was a ‘dialogue’ and that he screamed again.
Makes sense, given how its purpose is to set up the new arc. Not much need to leave things out for the sake of pacing.
They done it so perfectly! I love that episode and love the hope in the air, my man similing and being happy, I love they see people cheering for them. THAT was earned.
It still modified some moments like Armin thinking of Eren and Mikasa instead of the bullies in the manga. Maybe it's better and more consistent with the following events.
Thanks God! The whole series should has been this way. Compared to the sad 1st episode of Uprising, this one was a true masterpiece.
u people need to get the salt in your blood checked, let others be dissatisfied with something they care about? please and thanks
i don't care if it went exactly as the original manga or with some changes as long as the episode is good
THE CHAPTER SIGNIFIED THE START OF A NEW ARC, BUT THE ANIME USED IT TO END THE FIRST COUR, WAS THIS A BENEFICIAL DECISION? 478 Responses
Tumblr media
The majority of folks thought shifting the send-off to the end of the cour to create an uplifting cliffhanger was a good way to end the season.  Several people called attention to how much contrast was felt between such a positive ending and the credits scene.
I think it works great, especially the triumph of the send off and the "oh shit, what's happening" moment in the ED
should have been the first ep of the next arc, with the send off as the cliffhanger
It was a nice, fun send off for the arc. Has the suspense of the scouts going towards the foes. The next episode with the next chapter/s will be perfect for getting back into the series after 6 months
WAIT Studio used it as an effective cliffhanger but from an adaptation perspective it's just like the Wall Titan. Something to keep the audience's attention at the cost of the narrative's flow. If the season was going to be split then rushing the Uprising Arc at breakneck speed resulting in one extra episode was pointless.
The opening of 73 is a perfect opening for the second cour, so I knew from the beginning of the season that ending in this chapter would be their aim. The second half won't struggle for content, and they can either push ahead flashbacks (I expect some of Bert's parts from 96 making it into the adaptation of 77) or content that didn't make it in the first half used to extend other parts (Eren's experiments for Armin realizing how to beat Bert in 81)
I think this will help the second part by being on the way to Shiganshina to start it off.
Heck cliffhangers!
LEVI WASN’T EXPLICITLY SHOWN EAVESDROPPING UNTIL THE END OF EMA’S CONVERSATION, DO YOU THINK THIS DIMINISHED THE FORESHADOWING? 478 Responses
Tumblr media
The vast majority of respondents agreed that as long as we saw him listening to them, that’s ultimately all that matters. A small few believe that not showing him listening in on them earlier will diminish the overall impact when he makes his decisions later, however.
I don't think it matters, especially if the anime includes a flashcut to this moment post-decision, which will make its important even more obvious for viewers who may not remember this scene at all.
I'm not sure, I guess it did seem more ambiguous here. They'll flashback to it when serumbowl happens though.
Wouldn’t have spent more time on it. This show is about subtle details. I think its ok.
It still worked, but I would have liked it to have been made clear that he saw Armin's expression when he was talking about the ocean
No, but i think it was nice in the manga to see that at the beginning of the conversation he was standing and ended up on the floor by the end of it. Small detail, but i took it like he didn't mean to listen in the beginning but decided to stay in the end because of what he was hearing?
No, because it was a detail it meant a lot more. Subtle details have greater impact in visualities, manga is a different medium and the scene was used properly for its medium.
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT WIT SHOWING *THAT PART* OF THE RTS ARC AS A TEASER? 480 Responses
Tumblr media
38% of respondents believe that the teaser was a great way to keep interest in the series high. 20% specifically feel that it will keep the anime only fans invested. About 21% of respondents combined don’t think it was the smartest choice on WIT’s end while almost 10% are just not ready to see that animated at all.
Even though I already know what will happen, my body *isn't* ready for this shit to come, except for the lightning spears
Honestly, I thought it was stupid as fuck and a cheap way to keep hype up for anime-only people. I would've preferred my anime-only friend to go into RTS completely blind.
I think it's great because it lends itself a lot of hype for the next half as well as leaving it very open ended. Especially because they cut out lines about the serum.
I think this teaser shocked more the manga readers than the anime onlines.
It's the worst part of the manga they could spoil. I'm not sure what they intend to do by showing such a controversial moment
It was brilliant. Anime only watchers don't often get the experience of agonizing over certain cliffhangers monthly, but with this flashforward looming in their head, they have a whole season of suffering ahead of them. SUFFER LIKE US, ANIME ONLIES!
I really liked it but I think they could have shown a part of Bert/Reiner/Zeke’s convo since we saw Bert and Reiner at the end of the episode, and it would have anime-onlies wondering who the glasses guy is
I was shocked and hyped at seeing them include this scene, but at the same time I’m sad that anime-onlies were spoiled that at the very least Mikasa, Eren, and Levi will survive until this scene, destroying any tension of them dying
I'm really conflicted; on one hand, I was very surprised in a positive way, cause it was a ballsy and unexpected move. On the other hand, I understand that anime viewers might be sick of spoilers bc of the scene at the beginning of ep1.
It gave me anxiety lol. Please someone save my babies from their horrible destiny
One hell of a cliffhanger and I can't really imagine anything better to show everything going wrong (Colossal nuke is way too obvious, for example), but the people complaining about spoilers do have a point...
WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS FOR RTS’S ADAPTATION? 480 Responses
Tumblr media
WHAT SEGMENTS OF RTS ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING ANIMATED NEXT COUR? 481 Responses
Over half of respondents feel that the Return to Shiganshina arc will be delivered just as well as Uprising was. 37% of respondents feel it will be much better than Uprising’s adaptation. A small few don’t have much faith in the second half of the four.
FUCK ME UP!! R.I.P. ANIME ONLIES
GIMME THE 2ND COUR NOW!
I don't know if I'm emotionally prepared for this arc
I’m going to have 6 more months to mentally prepare myself for the return to shiganshina arc and I still won’t be ready
from an adaptation perspective it's going to be the same as the previous seasons. WAIT Studio excels at certain aspects of packaging SnK into anime, but as a whole it's a bad, rather than amazing, adaptation.
Is there a "NOPE I am not ready for RtS arc" in the questions?
WHAT SEGMENTS OF RTS ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING ANIMATED NEXT COUR? 481 Responses
Tumblr media
The most anticipated segment of the Return to Shiganshina arc is the suicide charge + Levi totally wrecking Zeke. Following closely behind are the basement reveal, the serumbowl, Grisha’s diaries and flashbacks, the ocean and the showdown with the 104th and Reibert.
Kill me! I cannot believe I have to wait 6 months for RTS. 6 months until I can see Reiner and Bertholdt in action and the FREAKING BASEMENT!!!! I was fine with a 3 months break but 6 is too much ;____; I want to see Grisha's past animated
What everybody is waiting for the RtS Arc: the basement, Reibert fight, Levi soloing the beast titan, the ocean. Me, an intellectual: THUNDER SPEARS THUNDER SPEARS THUNDER SPEARS THUNDER SPEARS THUNDER SPEARS THUNDER SPEARS THUNDER SPEARS THUNDER SPEARS THUNDER SPEARS THUNDER SPEARS THUNDER SPEARS THUNDER SPEARS THUNDER SPEARS THUNDER SPEARS THUNDER SPEARS THUNDER SPEARS THUNDER SPEARS THUNDER SPEARS THUNDER SPEARS THUNDER SPEARS THUNDER SPEARS (and Grisha's backstory)
can't wait to see historia looking graceful as hell in front of the sunrise while the SC goes off to fuck reibert and zeke up
The only thing I can think about is Zeke.... *screams* ZEKE AND EREN! THE JAEGERBROS! AND THE GRISHA FILES! SO MANY JAEGERS *dies*
I'm definitely looking forward to RTS okay, but I'm dreading it more, honestly. But the one thing I'm looking forward to, and really hoping they'll animate, is Levi taking down those Titans on the way to Zeke. I know the focus is on Erwin's last charge in the manga, and rightly so, but DAMN, I want to see Levi do that -I honestly don't think anyone, even Mikasa, could do what he did there.
I have a fever, and the only prescription is Season 3 Part 2
ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS ON THE EPISODE?
A pretty decent choice for a midseason finale. But most important, a pretty good choice for episode 49. Once we're back in April, the series will be celebrating having made it to 50 episodes. Just 2 years ago, we were wondering if we'd ever get episode 26, and now we're getting to a landmark episode that will be exciting and memorable! Nothing between chapters 70-72 could've worked as such a landmark, in my opinion, but chapters 73-74? Absolutely perfect for it.
And my ship finally got some screen time
But damn wit... I almost got a heart attack because of the glitched ending!! Please, I at least want to survive to see manbun Eren animated
For anime watchers: I enjoyed watching your confusion over that ED. May you all be prepared by April 2019.
My heart is filled with so much Eruri that I may cry. You could literally see how much concern Levi had for Erwin in his eyes.
I love Bertoto and Raina more than myself. Guess, I'll die in April.
I'm an Erwin Lover™ and the show is gonna come back right around my birthday so this was Great and I'm Fine
It was out of character to see Eren fully clothed.
The moment when SC were cheered up and Erwin was so confident and happy and then they left into the sunset gave me goosebumps and almost made me cry :') it was a beautiful, strong, encouraging moment for SC!!
Let me just tell you how fucking HYPED I am for the next season after those previews during the ED. HYPED. And Jesus fuck yes, Armin looked like a charred French fry that got left behind in the oil. THANK JESUS. I was afraid WIT might downplay that, but no, my boy gonna be the CRONCHIEST.
The glitches were great and not too spoiler-y but WIT absolutely ruined it with the Eren/Mikasa/Levi scene. They showed too much.
rip ears in that ending, it makes for some great youtube reactions though lol
Erwin looked fine as fuck
Wit, you better be paying for my doctor visit. My ears were bleeding with your little trick you pulled at the end.
This episode. THIS FUCKING EPISODE. Man what a way to end the cour. REALLY, standing ovation to WIT. That glitch ending was just like that tiny Titan-in-the-wall scene at the end of season 1 that made me go looking for the manga. Absolutely brilliant stuff.
Thanks for these polls.

ginny & georgia is good.
//NOTE: This was originally posted to Wordpress on 05.01.2021//
Let me start by saying that I tried to think of a clever title for this post, but all I could think of was the simple fact that I really like Ginny & Georgia. Excuse my lack of cleverness this week. I’m not sure if it’s my body responding to the first vaccine dose or if it’s the fog of seasonal allergies, but my brain is mush; my sense of smell is also not right. Also, Bug scratched the hair off of one of her ears (I’m pretty sure that’s seasonal allergies, poor thing) and I’ve spent a cumulative 15 hours this past week rendering, exporting, and uploading one single video onto YouTube for work (lost story short: I’m back at the rendering stage after I realized the audio got unsynced in the second half of the video. Ugh). It’s been a WEEK.
Excuses, excuses.
So, while I wait for my laundry and as I take a break from New Pokemon Snap (omg, it’s so good), I thought I’d brain-vomit my thoughts about Ginny & Georgia. Proving true to the portrait I gave of myself in my last post, I’m happy (or embarrassed?) to say that I watched Ginny & Georgia (henceforth G&G) twice this week. I finished episode 10 and immediately started rewatching episode 1, and it’s taking everything in me to not start rewatching for a third time. But depending on what you consider a week, I might be on week two now? ANYWAY.
I’ll start this brain-dump by saying, again, I really like this show. I described it to friends as a cross between Gilmore Girls and Pretty Little Liars or Outer Banks–maybe with a touch of Dexter. I don’t think it’s just that, but I think that’s a good way to summarize how it feels to watch the show, and those are good things in my book. GG and Dexter are probably in my top 5 favorite TV shows, and OB is up there too. I’ve watched OB through twice, and it definitely quenched my mid-winter thirst for the beach and my perpetual desire for a solid mystery/intrigue. I grew up watching the Travel Channel, so any show set in an even moderately interesting locale is immediately catching my interest. Oh, and I watched the entire PLL series with my mom while I was a teenager and even after I went away to college; it was “our show”–our way of sharing cultural ground even when I was away from home for the first time. We watched each episode together when it aired on TV, and we’d be the first to admit that the show was–at best–illogical, comically dramatic, and unrealistic to the umpth degree. But sometimes it’s fun to watch a show and laugh at its absurdity.
G&G doesn’t fall into the same traps that a lot of those types of teen shows do. It has drama and intrigue; it has sex and “teen problems” (which are really just person problems). But it also has real conversations about race and sexuality and parent-child relationships that go beyond the CW/Freeform problem-for-problem’s-sake model (hi, PLL)) or the WB squeaky-clean-problems approach (I’m talking to you, Seventh Heaven). It takes a Skins approach to issues young people face–well, if Skins was made for a puritanical US audience, but not THAT US Skins reboot. We’ll never talk about that. Shhh. Look away.
I’m not going to rehearse the plot of G&G, so look it up for yourself right now. I’ll wait.
Just kidding. I’m not waiting. Go look it up on your own time.
The similarities between G&G and GG are glaring (hell, Georgia even calls herself and Ginny the Gilmores with bigger boobs). In both, you have a young, single mom who had her daughter at 15/16 and then ran away from home. The mom is plucky, charismatic, and doesn’t always navigate the world by making the most, er, ethical choices. The daughter initially seems a bit more reserved and like she wants to play by the rules, but deep down is just a younger version of the mother, and that comes out of the course of the series. The two relate to one another as friends, but it’s complicated by the fact that they’re parent and child and that there is an inherent power imbalance there. The daughter is a little too mature for her own good and the mother is a little too immature for her own good. They butt heads, usually over the mother’s past and present choices (particularly regarding men) and the daughter’s present and future choices (also often regarding men). Their fights and falling outs are truly spectacular–they fight like only a mother and daughter could, but they also love one another–though they can’t express that love in the most logical or legible ways. They’re dysfunctional in every way you could imagine, and they really should be in family counseling.
But that’s not all. If that were it, I’d say, “oh, boohoo, they have similar types of characters. As if this is novel? Hasn’t this been done before? Get off your high horse.” NO. The parallels between these two shows go WAY deeper than that. Georgia is Lorelei and Ginny is Rory–hell, their naming practices are even similar. Georgia named herself after the state she was in the first time she had to come up with a pseudonym; this initiated a naming practice wherein she names her children after the cities/states they’re born in–hence Ginny, for Virginia. Rory is a nickname for Lorelei. (Side note: Lorelei is a hard name to type.)
Fine, fine. But we also have the tripartite relationship dynamics. Lorelei’s Big Three are Christopher, Max, and Luke; Georgia’s are Zion (Ginny’s dad and Georgia’s “penguin”–still not positive what that means, except that they can’t let go of one another?), Paul (the mayor, a white collar, public-facing profession), and Joe (the cafe/restaurant owner). If teenaged Rory has Dean and Jess, Ginny has Hunter and Marcus, respectively; Rory and Ginny obviously belong with the “bad boy”–they have infinitely better chemistry and get one another–but struggle with how good they “look” with the good guy, who’s actually kind of a judgmental jerk (as the bad guy points out).
Stars Hollow looks a whole lot like Wellsbury–hell, they’re both in New England. Wellsbury IS the most New England town name ever. Period. I love me some picturesque New England town bullshit.
Oh, and the side characters. Ellen and Sookie fill the same niche, and it’s a good one. They’re easily the most likable characters in both shows, and their husbands are genuinely funny characters in their own rights. GG has the sexually ambiguous (until he’s not) but oh-so-sarcastic Michel while G&G has Nick. Arguably, you could lump Kirk in with Michel to get Nick, but Nick isn’t as bumbling as Kirk, so maybe that point doesn’t stand. Hell, for friends Rory has the angel and devil on her shoulders in the form of Lane and Paris; Ginny has Max and Abby. And if Stars Hollow has Taylor Doose, Wellsbury has Cynthia Fuller. The list goes on.
Of course, a staple of GG is Emily and Richard Gilmore, but we glimpse that in G&G’s flashbacks to Zion’s parents, who help Georgia and Zion when the two first have Ginny. They’re similarly exasperated with their child’s choices and come off as a little overbearing but nonetheless have good intentions. They don’t have nearly as much screen time as Emily and Richard, which is a shame, but they serve a similar function.
Oh! And the flashbacks. They’re one of the charming parts of GG–they give us really important backstory on Lorelei’s life and life choices prior to the series’ start (and Rory’s birth, frankly). They’re less charming in G&G because Georgia’s background is far darker than GG ever could or would have conjured.
This gets me to why G&G isn’t just a GG rip-off. G&G isn’t just a woke GG. It isn’t just GG with people of color, in the LGBTQIA+ community, of varied socioeconomic classes, or from outside New England. If you like GG, you might like G&G, but you also might not. G&G addresses real life challenges teenagers, women, people of colorm hell, most Americans face in 2021. It depicts the US in its multiple angles, some of which are very, very ugly. Some might say that it’s GG for 2021, and maybe it is, but if that’s true, I’m not sure it’s a bad thing. I’m just not sure it’s totally true.
I’m going to cool it on the GG-G&G comparisons for a moment and just talk about G&G because I think you get my point. Before I cool it completely, though, and as a point of departure, I’ll say that if we do go with the idea that G&G is GG for 2021, then we need to recognize what G&G does differently: it gives us glimpses into how a whole range of people experience the US, and it doesn’t look away from ugly, unflattering, hateful truths that reside just below the surface of sparkly, shiny, pretty, picture-perfect towns. It doesn’t shy away from reality, even if that reality is uncomfortable for white, middle-class, cis, het viewers.
The important things about G&G that I haven’t yet mentioned in specifics are a’plenty.
Ginny (and Hunter) is mixed-race, a subject that comes up on a number of occasions in the form of explicit conversations about how being mixed-race doesn’t necessarily mean belonging to two communities but can instead mean feeling out of place in both. It also comes up in a very hard-to-watch argument between Ginny and Hunter where the two trade insults about one another’s lack of belonging; the argument escalates into a screaming match in which the two effectively diminish not only one another’s claims to their Black (in Ginny’s case) and Taiwanese (in Hunter’s case) identities but also the prejudices they experience at the hands of a hegemonic white society that systematically denies opportunities or a sense of belonging (among other things) for those who don’t fit into readily identifiable “boxes.”
Georgia ran away from her childhood home in rural, impoverished Arkansas because she was being sexually abused by her stepfather, who then went on to sexually abuse her half-sister.
Georgia has killed people, often for “legitimate” (???) reasons, including posing threats to Ginny.
Georgia used to be in a biker gang and still has connections with at least one member, a lawyer she has on retainer to help her “disappear” her misdeeds, including said murders.
Marcus and Ginny have struggled (or are currently struggling) with self-harm and suicide ideation.
Literally every single one of the teenagers in this show is under immense pressure to over-engage in extracurricular activities that will make them competitive candidates at top universities.
Parents’ unhealthy relationships with one another, divorce, and everything else in that realm also shape the teenaged characters’ lives.
Abby struggles with an eating disorder that’s fueled in part by comments her male peers (notably, an asshole named Press) about her body. Male characters make sexist, stereotyping comments to Ginny about her body, too.
I’ll stop there, but I do so with full knowledge that I’m likely leaving something out. Hell, as I type this I remember that Austin (Ginny’s younger half-brother) literally stabs a kid in the hand and there’s a private detective trying to figure out Georgia’s past, including if/how she murdered her previous husband (the impetus for the family’s move). Like I said, there’s so much more to this show than just its similarities with GG. But I’ve also seen articles online decrying viewers who make the connection, and I don’t think that’s quite the right approach. The show clearly isn’t copying GG. Even if G&G did take inspiration from GG, it takes that inspiration in a fresh direction.
I wonder, though, about how we, the viewers, are supposed to respond to certain aspects of the show.
For instance, the show pits the US South as the source of obvious Bad Stuff ™–child abuse, incest, poverty, etc.– and the US Northeast as a place where the Bad Stuff ™ is hidden beneath a picture-perfect veneer. I get what the show’s creators are going for. They’re attempting to give us a multidimensional perspective on the US in all its prettiness and ugliness, but I wonder if associating the South with only the Bad Stuff ™ is doing a disservice to a region that has a rich cultural past and present–a past and present that’s certainly included problems like poverty, racism, and abuse but cannot be defined by those things alone because those things are not all that’s there. To tie those things primarily to just one region because those are stereotypes that are often perpetuated about that region seems a bit . . . overly simplistic? Troublesome? Dare I use the old grad-student favorite–problematic? It’s too easy–it’s lazy, in fact–to pit South against Northeast as the source of the US’s outright ugliness. It’s the rhetoric surrounding the 2016 presidential election all over again, and, frankly, we could all use a break.
The other thing that regional competition does is it makes it possible for the show to gloss over the fact that those Bad Things ™ exist in the Northeast, too. I feel silly saying that because it seems so obvious, but the simplistic portrait the show paints of the US means that it sacrifices accurate representation and complexity for the sake of–well, actually, I’m not sure what it’s for the sake of. Maybe straightforward storytelling? That might make sense if the show didn’t dwell in other complexities and commit itself to attempting to represent other identities and aspects of American life with some degree of accuracy, so I don’t know.
I can’t speak to whether the show accurately represents the experiences of mixed-race people, LGBTQIA+ people, or people with disabilities. I suspect that it represents the experiences of some people accurately but, of course, not all people because that would be impossible. I’m also not sure if I think the show’s commitment to representing a variety of experiences of US life borders on tokenism. I can’t speak for how someone who occupies one of those subject positions experiences the show because I do not occupy that subject position. My gut reaction is that the show does seem to make an effort to go beyond the whole “look at us, we cast all sorts of people in our show” by attempting to humanize all of its characters as real humans with rich, complex lives. It weaves the characters’ lives into a tight web, making clear that a character like Max and Marcus’s dad isn’t noteworthy just because he’s deaf. You don’t look at Clint and think “oh, that’s the deaf character.” You think, oh, that’s Clint; he’s Ellen’s husband, Max and Marcus’s dad, he’s deaf, he makes pithy remarks about his over-the-top daughter and slacker son, and he performs strip-teases for his wife. He’s noteworthy because he’s an engaged (and absolutely hilarious) husband and father whose deafness is one of many identities of his that influences his children’s lives as any other cultural identity would influence a family’s dynamic. The entire family is (at least) bilingual, communicating in sign language and spoken English while also teaching their sign language skills to friends and significant others. His deafness is one identity among many that the show invests him with, and he’s not in all that many scenes.
I could be wrong, but that was my experience while watching the show and thinking about it a bit afterward and while writing this post.
The show depicts mixed-race identity in a complex way, too, but it dwells on it a bit longer and with a bit more detail. I mentioned that Ginny and Hunter are both of mixed-race parentage and that their mixed-race identities become a subject of a relationship-ending argument. To back up a bit, though, the show attempts to paint a vivid portrait of the challenges Ginny in particular faces as a she navigates middle-class, white suburbia as the daughter of a Black father and a white mother. We see how she reacts when a police office walks toward her at a gas station while she pumps gas in her mother’s BMW, when a teacher tells her she’s being “aggressive” (while her classmates, who display similar behaviors, are unremarked upon), when her hair frizzes out after her friends pressure her to let another student’s white mom brush her curls into a ponytail using a boar-bristle brush, when a male friend (multiple male friends?) tells her that she doesn’t look like a stereotypical Black girl, and, among other things, when another student asks her “what are you?” in an attempt to pinpoint her racial/ethnic identities. Each instance is painful to watch because the actress who plays Ginny plays her well; the camera stays trained on her face as she responds to each of these interactions, allowing the viewer to observe the range of emotions she feels as she repeatedly navigates a community of peers and adults who can’t get their shit together and respect her existence. These interactions aren’t quirky neighbors asking silly questions about why she hangs her laundry a certain way or informing her that she needs to only mow her lawn on Thursdays. These are interactions that repeatedly undermine her sense of belonging, that tell her she’s somehow different, and that question her very right to exist. It’s heartbreaking, but I think it’s important that it’s depicted because that’s reality for many, many people.
The scene with Hunter is interesting because it shows the two turning something that was common-ground into a source of conflict for them. I’m not entirely sure how to read this scene. It’s difficult to watch because it rapidly descends into a “who is the most disenfranchised?” competition rather than a respectful conversation about each partner’s different experiences with prejudice. I wondered if the subtext here was some commentary on how members of one racial community pit themselves against members of other racial communities. (I’m not being clear here, and I’m struggling to clarify even as I go back to edit this post. I guess what I mean is that, when I initially watched this scene, I worried that this was a negative commentary on the Black community in particular and how it engages with other racial communities. I hope that makes sense.) Frankly, I’m still not sure if that’s not what’s happening there or if that’s not what was intended. What I’m fairly certain of, though, is that the scene makes clear that we, the viewer, are being told pretty explicitly that we can’t identify the two as “good partners” on the sole basis that they have mixed-race parentage in common. In other words, the scene undermines the idea that experience of racial prejudice is the only (or even the most important) factor that brings two people together and makes them good partners for one another. It also undermines the belief that experiencing prejudice doesn’t mean a person is automatically awakened to the prejudices other people also experience.
This is also one of the scenes where Ginny truly is unlikeable. Hunter is, too, but he’s unlikeable in a number of scenes throughout the show. He’s the Good Guy™ character in a nutshell–says all the right things, does all the right things, is all the right things, but maybe isn’t all those things for all the right reasons. In this scene, Ginny enacts the prejudicial treatment she’s suffered at the hands of her peers against Hunter; she questions the validity of his identity and the veracity of his experiences of prejudice at the hands of his peers. This scene is the breaking-point where the two have to come to terms with the fact that they’re not compatible even though, on some surface and by some set of metrics, they might appear to be.
Hunter sucks, but so does Marcus–for different reasons, though. Marcus is detached, withdrawn, sarcastic, unmotivated, disrespectful, and dishonest. He’s unaware–and doesn’t attempt to improve at all on this–of how his actions impact other people. He just doesn’t care about anyone but himself–until he does, a little bit. Some part of me has sympathy for Marcus and genuinely likes him; I’ll blame the show for that. Another part of me–the part that’s 30 years old and has known plenty of Marcuses–doesn’t have time for his shit. I’m conflicted, but the majority of me wants Marcus and Ginny to end up together because the things they have in common and the things that bring them together are the things that most people look for in a relationship. Marcus is a lazy shit most of the time, but he makes a genuine effort to understand Ginny. By the end of the season, we see that he also respects her and accepts her as she is–warts and all. He seems to genuinely want the best for her, which is a nice development in character from our first introduction to him, tumbling out of his mother’s minivan after having been caught smoking weed on a street corner. Again, though, he wasn’t always so respectful. His past behaviors make it hard to trust him, so it makes sense when Ginny doesn’t bring him along at the end of the season. It does, though, make you hope that he’s back in season 2 and that we get to see more of their relationship.
Speaking of which, I hope that season 2 also explores Georgia and Joe’s relationship a bit more. It seems like they’re headed in the Lorelei-Luke direction, which will make me happier than words could express, but I could also see the show’s creators flipping the script on us and setting Joe up with his own gloomy backstory–something to do with the ethically ambiguous labor situation he’s got going on at his farm and in his cafe, perhaps? Still, I think that might make him and Georgia even better suited for one another than they already are. After all, he’s one of the first people who showed Georgia true, genuine kindness after she ran away as a teenager.
And of course I want more of Ellen in season 2. The actress who plays her is hilarious and her character is just . . . really likable.
On a somewhat lighter note, one little thing I noticed while watching the show is that the characters slap their thighs a lot. This, again, might by my seasonal allergies brain, but the “[slaps thighs]” notation on closed captioning came up an infinite number of times over the course of this show. It came up so often that I started thinking you could catch the entire plot of the show if someone just spliced together every instance where a character sighs and slaps their thighs. I’d watch that video.
After all that, I still think the parallels to GG are there, but I still defend that G&G is also more than those parallels. And the “more” it offers is good. It’s intrigue; it’s gloomy realities and often-ignored truths that don’t offer viewers a sunny break from reality. But I think that’s good. I don’t like the argument that TV should be a “break from reality” or that a show is good on the sole basis that it offers us a “break from reality.” I think that argument is an excuse used to defend media that is too lazy to do the responsible thing and convey storylines that are inclusive and meaningful.
Well, my laundry is done, so I have to go deal with that. Happy Saturday, and happy initial inoculation!
XOXO, you know.

I have picked up playing Sea of Thieves again ever since Season 3: A Pirate’s Life released, and I have done so for a few reasons. Reason number one: I do enjoy playing Sea of Thieves most of the time. Sometimes it is an engaging game fully capable of entertaining me for hours, and sometimes I log in, immediately get attacked by another player or harassed over their mic chat, and get discouraged and tired of playing about 5-10 minutes later. Reason number two: I love Pirates of the Caribbean and a Sea of Thieves crossover between the two sounded like an interesting collaboration. Reason Number three: I heard there were some pretty neat Monkey Island easter eggs hidden in the new Tall Tales and I was not satisfied with simply watching a youtube video about them. I wanted to experience them for myself.
Also, while I have absolutely no intention of purchasing microtransactions for SoT, the rewards for leveling up the plunder pass are pretty neat. I can’t resist collecting every Outlaw Pass in Red Dead Online, either. But RDO is easy because you earn gold for completing missions, daily challenges, bounty hunter missions, and opening treasure chests.
In the first chapter of this new pirate adventure, the player meets with the mysterious Castaway. She tells the player that trouble is coming and that in order to prevent it, they must sail to the Sea of the Damned, a mystifying land of the dead where ghost pirates can sail the seas and while away eternity.
In a fascinating homage to the original Disneyland ride and scenes from the Pirates of the Caribbean films, our player character (whom I feel motivated to develop as my own fan-character offspring of Guybrush Threepwood and Elaine Marley from Monkey Island) is instructed to navigate their way through Dead Man’s Grotto, following ghosts of pirates to find themselves just outside of a desolate town known as Sailor’s Grave.
Our character has one goal— to rescue another pirate who has been imprisoned on the Ferry of the Damned. In order to reach the prisoner, the player must stow away on the Ferry. Before we can do that, however, we must summon the Ferry to Sailor’s Grave with help from a disembodied skull of a cursed pirate (Murray?… Bob? The potential for Monkey Island jokes is endless, in my mind)
Sailor’s Grave is an old town that was once a lively hideaway for pirates to hole up with their loot, but as we visit it, we discover that the town has fallen to ruins and most of the inhabitants have moved on in one way or another, save for one who was left hanging in a cage. The reason he was strung up? His crew mutinied against him after he snuffed out the flames of the lighthouse in order to prevent the Ferry of the Damned parting him with his treasure.
I enjoyed the introduction of the Cursed Captain. I like the idea of my young Captain Marley Threepwood telling the old skull that she’s actually had some prior experience with cursed talking skulls through her father’s old pal Murray. As well as telling him the tales Guybrush would most definitely have told her as a young, starry-eyed kid hungry for her own adventures.
I found it depressing whenever I had to set the Cursed Captain down, even just temporarily. A few times while wandering around the abandoned town, I had to pick up another item needed to fulfill an optional quest objective, only to hear him call out not to leave him behind or remarking that he was being abandoned again as his crew had done to him. As chatty as he was to the point of being annoying after a while, in-character I did not blame him at all after spending so long in isolation.
Plus it’s just nice in a game like Sea of Thieves to meet a skeleton who isn’t hellbent on killing you. And as someone who mainly plays solo and only occasionally teams up at random on open crews who will put up with my silent shenanigans and text chat use, it feels like a relief to see an NPC do most of the talking for once.
The player has the option of either progressing with the main story by taking the Cursed Captain to the top of the lighthouse, where he advises you on how to summon the Ferry by restoring the lighthouse and lighting beacons surrounding the island, or taking him around the remnants of Sailor’s Grave so that he can tell you about the town. There is one hidden beacon in town which, when lit using the lighthouse lens, opens up a gate to an area chock full of Monkey Island easter eggs.
Lightning flashes across the sky as you approach an old shipwreck, and a cinematic screen displays the words “Deep in the Caribbean” as the title theme from Monkey Island begins to play over the area instead of the solemn instrumental rendition of “Yo Ho, A Pirate’s Life For Me” that is heard in the rest of the town. I don’t if the developers were thinking about it at the time, but it seems to call back to Curse of Monkey Island and Edward van Helgen’s pirate story of hearing an inescapably catchy, haunting melody that drove most of his shipmates to madness.
The shipwreck found in this area is none other than the Mad Monkey from Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge, the famous shipwreck that Guybrush Threepwood needed to track down in order to retrieve the figurehead so that he could barter it for a piece of the map to Big Whoop, the indescribable treasure he spends the majority of the story searching for. The ship is renamed here to the Headless Monkey by its new captain, Kate Capsize. A series of journals authored by Kate reveal that she was out for revenge on Guybrush for having her falsely imprisoned under his name and stealing her near-grog.
Kate pursued Guybrush across the seas and discovered that he was most likely spending his honeymoon with his bride, Elaine Marley, in the Sea of Thieves. What happened to Kate’s ship isn’t explicitly mentioned, but I theorize that her ship lacked the equipment required to survive sailing through The Shroud (the waters that encompass the Sea of Thieves territory and keep it hidden away from intruders) or that she unknowingly sailed through a portal into the Sea of the Damned and found herself trapped there.
Whatever the true reason for the ship’s destruction and her demise, Captain Kate herself is nowhere to be found. Her final journal entry explains that she has realized revenge is nothing worth living or dying for. She has been reunited with her glass-bottomed boat, which she previously sold, and she only wishes to find a way to come back to life. She sailed off alone and was not heard from again, so it is unknown whether she found a way out or not.
The remains of her ship’s quarters contain a small map of Scabb, Booty, and Phatt Islands, as seen in MI2, and a larger map on the table that features the entire Tri-Island Area as seen in Escape From Monkey Island, including Monkey and Dinky Island as well. There’s no telling what, if anything more, will happen with Monkey Island in Sea of Thieves, but it does give me a glimmer of hope that maybe my all time favorite game series isn’t completely dead yet. It would be fun to see iconic Monkey Island characters physically appear in a future update, if Disney/LucasArts were willing to allow it.
After finally returning to the lighthouse to complete the main objective of lighting the beacons at sea, the Ferry of the Damned begins to approach the island, and the Cursed Captain requests that he be taken to his ship, allowing the player passage from the side door of his quarters through his treasure room and out to a rowboat that our pirate hero must take to sneak themselves aboard the Ferry.
On to the next chapter of the tale, once our pirate successfully makes their way onto the Ferry of the Damned, they sabotage the Ferryman’s Well of Fates by lighting it with the Flame of Souls, setting free the trapped souls and secrets he has kept hidden on the lower decks of his ship. Making their way to the brig, the pirate meets up with the prisoner they are intended to rescue, revealed to be none other than Captain Jack Sparrow. Jack is in possession of a peculiar treasure, a glimmering, glowing box he informs the player character is a key between worlds. He used it to flee to the Sea of Thieves whilst being pursued by Davy Jones, who seemed to have been restored to the Flying Dutchman after the Trident of Poseidon was destroyed.
It’s not really clear how Jones came to be once more, after his death in At World’s End, but I’m willing to borrow another quote from The Curse of Monkey Island, “True evil can never be destroyed completely.” In the context of Monkey Island, this is because the Ghost Pirate LeChuck has ostensibly found his true purpose in rising from the grave to torment Guybrush and attempt to win Elaine’s heart and hand in marriage. Perhaps Davy Jones has found a similar purpose in trying to imprison Jack in the locker?
After a tense battle with the Flying Dutchman, Jack loses the key to one of Jones’ minions who jumps ship with it. Jack demands that the Ferryman pursue the Dutchman, but gets knocked off balance and falls overboard the bow of the Ferry when the Dutchman releases a shockwave that rocks the ship.
With Jack lost to the depths of the Sea of the Damned, the Ferryman fears that both worlds are now in grave danger due to the player character’s selfish actions, but he does reward them for their bravery in fighting by returning them to the land of the living so that they may continue to fight to save the Sea of Thieves from Davy Jones, who intends to turn the high seas into his new locker.
