Felt the itch to contribute to the Great Devourer and finally get my paint scheme down. Color shifted the classic coconut crab carapace catgutt popularized, and did up the underside to my approximation of a blue crab

Not sure if the effect evokes the crustacean vibe I wanted, but I think it turned out pretty nice either way

you’re created with hands circling your wrists. there’s never any offense meant, you must understand - it’s simply that you’re a story, and someone’s come by this desperate need to learn how to let the hell go.

Emily gets up at 5am, and is feeling a bit restless but not hungry yet. She quickly gets dressed in her thermals, jeans, shirt, jacket, and hat, and heads out to the backyard. Her grandmas’ horse Coconut is trotting around in the snow*, and Emily goes up to him, gently talking and petting him.* “Hey Coco.” She says softly, and he whinnies. She pets him for a bit before mounting him to go on a relaxed ride, but is thrown off. 😅 Thankfully she’s not only okay but also narrowly avoids falling into the poop that Coconut has just deposited. She grumbles a bit as she gets up and rubs her back, but gently asks Coconut not to throw her off again and gets back on him.

Okay so coconut crabs, Amelia Earheart and the question of was Amelia Earheart eaten by coconut crabs.
On the 2nd of July in 1937, Amelia Earheart and her navigator Fred Noonan disappeared over the Pacific Ocean. They were meant to land on Howland Island which is like halfway between Hawai'i and Australia and measures like maybe 3 square miles.
Obviously, they didn't get to Howland Island (almost definitely due to fuel shortage), which means either they crashed into the ocean or they landed on a neighbouring island and then disappeared.
One such island is Nikumaroro. It's an island in Kiribati, it's inhabited by coconut crabs and it's about 360 miles (350 nautical miles) from Howland Island. It's surrounded by a coral reef which could apparently serve as a rough runway. And so the theory goes that they landed on Nikumaroro.
As far as I know, the specific theory where Amelia Earheart is eaten by coconut crabs on Nikumaroro originates with an organisation called TIGHAR (The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery). In their theory, they crash landed on the island, Noonan died, the plane drifted away and Amelia Earheart was left alone with the crabs.
And any time I read anything about those crabs, that idea gets more terrifying. Apparently, if you lay down at night on the ground on the island, you can turn on your flashlight and there'll just be a ring of crabs staring you down. They will also eat kittens which feels like some author trying a little too hard to make something scary, which you don't need to because like, size comparison:
Tumblr media
As well as climbing trees and snapping bird wings, coconut crabs have also been observed both eating the moulted exoskeletons of other coconut crabs and using their pincers to open up and eat the carcasses of other coconut crabs. They have more strength in their pincers than many animals have in their bites, have the strongest recorded grip of all animals, and in cases where people have accidentally put their hands in their burrows, they have had a finger or several fingers or their whole hand ripped off.
They also will eat decaying flesh so even if they didn't kill her - which I doubt as they are not oft aggressive to humans unless they feel threatened - they definitely could have eaten her corpse. I presume Noonan's too, if his body wasn't swept out to sea in the plane.
TIGHAR have also done experiments where they've found that the crabs will also drag bones away up to 60 feet away - though they did not find all the bones. Their theory is that they ate most of her corpse and dragged her bones into their burrows.
And that's relevant because in 1940, a partial skeleton was found on the island. And by partial, I mean 13 out of 206 bones were found and they were badly fractured. Those who found them also commented that the bones were kinda scattered around due to the crabs. There's been debate about whether they could be Earheart's bones or not, but we have no way of knowing for sure because they were sent to Fiji to be examined, they disappeared.
If you've ever dove into famous unsolved cases, you'd be familiar with key evidence like bones or teeth just going lost or thrown away. Like there's the famous case of the Isdal Woman's jaw and teeth being believed, seemingly incorrectly, to have been thrown out for smelling bad.
But anyway, the theory goes that after she died, from starvation, from thirst, from an injury suffered in the crash, or perhaps killed by crabs, the coconut crabs ate her corpse and dragged most of her bones away or maybe even crushed them.
There were also various distress calls that came from the island over the next several days after disappearing. In general, there were a shitton of people essentially prank calling as Amelia Earheart so they were pretty much all brushed off, but like, there's something very pressing about calls coming from the area where they went missing.
TIGHAR are still doing expeditions to Nikumaroro in hopes of finding the rest of her bones, be that where they lay. They also announced last year that a 2009 underwater photo could be proof that Earheart's plane, an Elektra, sits off of Nikumaroro. But also they don't know the exact location where it was taken.
Plus, back in 2019, Robert Ballard (of discovering the Titanic wreck fame) and Allison Fundis of the Ocean Exploration Trust searched the waters off of Nikumaroro, down to 2400 feet, and found no sign of the Elektra.
Various sources: x x x x x
Also in assembling these sources, I was reminded that if we had the strength, proportionately, of coconut crabs, we'd be able to crush six (American) tons.
And also found this print of a coconut crab from the Dictionnaire d’Histoire Naturelle of 1849.
Tumblr media
And I just think that's a neat print.
if i ever had godlike powers over the nature of animals i'd just make crabs smarter. like on par with crows or something. you'll walk out onto the pier at night and see a group of crabs working together to drag an unconscious man into the water. you can't help him now. he's gone.
