Thanks to @kiwiana-writes and @wordsofhoneydew for today's tags! I'm still full steam ahead on my big giant AU, and will be for awhile, so there'll be a bunch of cherry-picking of hopefully not excessively spoilery snippets for these posts until I start publishing it. šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚
Bea gathers Henry into a brief hug when he arrives, and he lets himself sag into it for just a moment before she leads him further into her apartment. Though sheā€™s younger than Henry, Bea has been his anchor since the day heā€™d first laid eyes on her wrinkled little newborn face. Thereā€™s an official portrait of the three of them as small children somewhere in Mumā€™s residence ā€“ in it, Pipā€™s 7, Henryā€™s 4, and Beaā€™s perhaps a month old, maybe less. Pip stands beside an oversized armchair, frowning slightly at the camera. Next to him, Henry sits in the chair, his little legs sticking straight out in front of him while he carefully cradles his sleeping infant sister and positively beams down at her where she rests in his lap. Subsequent portraits follow the same pattern, with Pip standing further and further apart from Henry and Bea, who are clearly thick as thieves.
Like always, this is an open tag -- tag yoself! I'm just happy to be here and read everyone's stuff.

OKAY. RWRB MOVIE REVIEW.
(Disclaimer that these are all only my opinions)
I imagined Philip as looking more like Philza Minecraft, to be completely honest. So tell me why they made him kinda..???
THEY FUCKED UP HIS CHARACTERIZATION (imo). In the book, heā€™s just a victim of what he was born into as well. Heā€™s rigid & kinda a dick because it was what he was taught to be to survive, the movie completely took that away, giving him literally two scenes.
AND THEN THEY GIVE GOOD GRACE TO THE KING? Bro. No. Stop it.
I feel as though they were afraid to criticize the British monarchy too hard, which is why they gave the king the good grace they did (plus other changes done, I donā€™t think they included the cliticization of the British Museum stealing all those artifacts either)
Frothing at the mouth over the fact they not only took away Luna, but completely got rid of the fucking sex abuse scandal in favor of a jealousy plot. Explodes you with my mind.
Going back to my point above that one, I feel they might not have wanted to add that seeing how many Richards are out there. Canā€™t fan too many flames, huh?
They also gave Bea way less screen time, & took away the whole ā€œPowder Princessā€ thing, I think the way they talked about their dad passing & how it effects the family was kind of cheap.
AND they fucked up Henryā€™s moms characterization. She just straight up wasnā€™t in it, only mentioned, & in a negative light. Again, they really didnā€™t give the dad passing the attention it deserved.
The beginning went by pretty damn fast. But in all fairness for that & I suppose a lot of points, the movies already two hours long with all that missing, so I suppose I can give some leniency on some of these points.
June obviously wasnā€™t there either, but it at least doesnā€™t feel like anybodyā€™s missing. I guess they managed the Nora & June merge well. THEY DID NOT MANAGE THE LIAM & LUNA MERGE WELL.
Seriously fuck them for taking away Luna & subsequently his character arc
THEY UN-DIVORCED ELLEN & OSCAR. I UNDERSTAND IT WOULD HAVE ADDED A LOT OF SCREEN TIME THEY DIDNā€™T HAVE BUT COME ON.
Do love all the terms of endearment Henry uses, honestly donā€™t remember if thatā€™s in the book or not.
Can we circle back around to how attractive Philip is. Sorry who said that.
I like the way they handled the cake scene better, definitely feels more realistic.
Admittedly also kinda happy the Henry magazine photo thing wasnā€™t added, kind of made me cringe reading about it lmao
OH YEA THEY TOOK OUT THE SCENE WHERE ALEX CALLS HENRY TO VENT ABOUT HIS PARENTS(?), IT WAS SUCH AN IMPORTANT MOMENT FOR THEIR RELATIONSHIP BOO
Is there a copy right reason they couldnā€™t include Henry being a Star Wars fan? If they just simply choose not to then I am Disappointed.
Really liked how they did the phone calls, with them appearing in front & them as though theyā€™re in the same room, together. Great touch.
Edit to add this bullet point because itā€™s really important to me. Alex says heā€™s bisexual, Henry says heā€™s gay. Ellen asks if Alex is gay, fluid, bi, pan. Ellen references transgender people. They talk about the LGBT+ community. They say all these words, they donā€™t whisper them, or talk around them. They say them loud & clear as day. Idk, this just makes me really happy because of how often youā€™ll see people talk around these words like theyā€™re bad or dirty words (yes Iā€™m aware this is a movie where they have gay sex multiple times on screen but itā€™s still important to me shut up)
FINAL THOUGHTS.
It was alright. I donā€™t regret watching it. It was entertaining, but admittedly not the type of movie Iā€™d usually watch, so I think other people could enjoy it way more then I did. But I definitely still enjoyed it despite all my criticisms.
Definitely not as good as the book, but not bad at all. Iā€™d say itā€™s absolutely worth the watch.
Iā€™m sure you can also find posts that can better articulate why this movie is so groundbreaking & important as well, which is something I didnā€™t particularly touch on in this post.

Rule Britannia
A FirstPrince Political AU by DuchessdePolignac
Summary:
Philip is King and Prince Henry is living his best, openly gay, tabloid-fodder life. But something doesn't feel right to Alex about the progressive fantasy the Hanover-Stuart-Foxes are selling.
Or: where Henry is a political courtesan fucking for King and Country, and Alex is the diplomat who foolishly and earnestly falls in love with him. Can Alex understand Henry's motivations, and can he live with the reality of being in love with a high-power courtesan with dangerous clientele? Or: A long and long-winded meditation on sex and power, and power and sex.
Mind the Tags (includes implied/referenced dubious consent and non-con, referenced underage sex, alcohol and drug abuse, sex work. See full tags list).

Ngl, despite my apprehension (i.e. I'm old and cynical), I'm interested to see what they do with the Red, White & Royal Blue sequel partly since I know in the book bonus chapter, Henry gives up his title - I haven't actually read it so idk if he's actually described as 'abdicating' or fandom just decided to use that term (which is not exactly correct).
But the book lacks a lot of accuracy around the British Royal family where as the movie put in a bit more effort (e.g. Henry's Mum being Duchess of Edinburgh not Princess of Wales) and since in the United Kingdom, Henry can't step out of the line of succession without an Act of Parliament which isn't an insignificant thing, I wonder if the movie will focus on that or if it will gloss over it or just go in a brand new direction entirely for a new audience who aren't familiar with the book.
Personally, I hope for the latter partially because the parallels to certain real life royals would get distracting but mostly because I'd love to see Henry use the position he once felt suffocated by to advocate for and empower others.
Though being honest, I'm mostly just hoping they don't fall into the romance sequel trope of breaking them up to get them back together again.
To be clear though, in real life I think the entire monarchy should be abolished - but in this gay little movie world I have other thoughts :)

While reading the book, I felt the urge to punch Prince Philip multiple times and guess what
They cast someone with a āœØ perfect punchable face āœØ
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He definitely looks like someone who eats his toast dry and solo.
P.S : This is not a dig at the actor's looks or anything. It's about the mannerism and acting and facial expression that looks very like Philip and thus punchable.

Two parallel universes: one where Arthur Fox has never been sick, so he and his family lived happily ever after, and our universe where Arthur Fox died from cancer. Weā€™re all stories in the end. Just make it a good one, eh? Because it was, you know. It was the best. Arthur Fox and his family and the days that never came.

Thomas Flynn (Prince Phillip) comment on Nickā€™s (Prince Henryā€™s) post is the purest thing ever.
Weā€™ve only seen very limited interactions between the cast members during the strike, but even then it was clear how important RWRB is to them.
While we arenā€™t owed anything , Iā€™m sure weā€™re going to see so much more loving support and amazing content from the cast and crew.

I see that they're teasing the Thanksgiving scene again.
Just give it to us!
And the Kensington breakfast!
And the full Paris scene! We need them, Matthew, and, no, we will not direct these inquiries to TomšŸ™„!

Chapter 15: Multitudes (Read on AO3)
Summary: Part II of the "Philip Chapters". Alex contemplates what the Hanover-Stuart-Foxes mean to him, and overhears a fateful conversation between the brothers.
A sneaky peaky:
ā€œHe makes me impossibly happy, Pip,ā€ Henry said, his voice smooth and dreamlike, the tell-tale hitch of breath as his words caught in his throat and hinted at tears. ā€œA happiness I could never have thought I would deserve. Perhaps he is my reward, for all that I have done.ā€
Were their lives ordinary than perhaps Alexā€™s heart would sing to hear such a sentiment. Instead, the optimist and the cynic in Alex waged war, interpreting the words differently, irreconcilably. Was he a reward for all the god Henry felt he had contributed to his nation, or a reward for its corruption? Was there a difference?
Writing this chapter was a delicious challenge, and Iā€™m actually quite proud of it. It (hopefully) answers some questions readers have been asking, and I hope it brings all the feels!
Happy (advanced) Valentineā€™s Day! This chapter is a bit anti-Valentines though šŸ„°
