JUNE 1956 || During their State Visit to Sweden, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip were accompanied to the History Museum by King Gustaf Adolf of Sweden.

She was given a guided tour of the museum and looked at the various artifacts present as she listened with great interest.

King Gustaf Adolf who was himself interested in history and science and must have been a great person to tour the museum with.

BORN ON THIS DAY:

Princess Margaret of Connaught (Margaret Victoria Charlotte Augusta Norah; 15 January 1882 – 1 May 1920) was Crown Princess of Sweden as the first wife of the future King Gustaf VI Adolf.

She was the elder daughter of Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught, third son of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and his wife, Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia.

Known in Sweden as Margareta, her marriage produced five children.

She was the grandmother of King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, and Queen Anne-Marie of Greece.

She died 30 years before her husband's accession to the throne of Sweden.

Royal Tiara Highlights: Swedish Ruby Tiara

This is yet another piece that came into the possession of the Bernadottes via Princess Margaret. The tiara was a wedding gift from King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra of the United Kingdom, Margaret’s uncle and aunt. 

The piece was inherited by Margaret’s second son Prince Sigvard who eventually sold it to his father, King Gustaf VI Adolf of Sweden. Gustaf Adolf claimed the sale was legitimate, but Sigvard claimed he only loaned the piece to his father. Funnily enough, King Gustaf VI left the tiara to Sigvard’s son Michael when he died in 1973; who then sold it to the new king Carl XVI Gustaf. Carl Gustaf’s wife, Queen Silvia, frequently wears the tiara although she only wore it a couple times publicly before Sigvard’s death in 2002.

Today His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden can celebrate 50 years on the throne.

Her Majesty the Queen, the Crown Prince Couple and Her Majesty Queen Anne-Marie are in Stockholm to participate in the anniversary celebrations.

Their Majesties and Their Royal Highnesses together with the Swedish royal family visited this morning King Gustaf VI Adolf of Sweden's grave in Hagaparken. The former Swedish king was the grandfather of King Carl Gustaf and maternal grandfather of the Queen, Princess Benedikte and Queen Anne-Marie.

Then followed a thanksgiving service, Te Deum, in the Royal Church of Stockholm Palace, followed by the changing of the guard and a song tribute in the palace courtyard, where the jubilee, the Nordic heads of state and the other royals appeared on the balcony.

11 JUNE 1956 || Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh attended a state banquet given in their honour by King Gustaf Adolf and Queen Louise of Sweden.

The Queen was accompanied by King Gustaf Adolf. While Queen Louise accompanied the Duke of Edinburgh. They were followed by Prince Bertil, Princess Sibylla, Lord Mountbatten, Princess Margaretha, Princess Birgitta and the Prime Minister.
