Swedish Royal Family - The Royal Court has announced that Princess Birgitta, King Carl XVI Gustaf sister, has passed away in Mallorca on Wednesday, December 4, 2024 at the age of 87.

Princess Birgitta was the widow of Prince Johann Georg of Hohenzollern (1932–2016) and then lived abroad for a long time. The princess leaves three children with families.

On the occasion of the passing of H.K.H. Princess Birgitta, H.M. The King makes the following statement:

"With great sadness today I have received the news that my sister, Princess Birgitta, has died. My sister was a colorful and straightforward person who will be deeply missed by me and my family. Together with my entire family today I send my condolences to Princess Birgitta's children and grandchildren. ”

The Universal Classic Monsters Collection will be released on 4K Ultra HD (with Digital) in digibook packaging on October 3 via Universal. Designed by Tristan Eaton, the eight-disc set is limited to 5,500.

It includes 1931's Dracula, 1931’s Frankenstein, 1932’s The Mummy, 1933’s The Invisible Man, 1935’s The Bride of Frankenstein, 1941’s The Wolf Man, 1943’s Phantom of the Opera, and 1954’s Creature from the Black Lagoon.

All eight films are presented in 4K with HDR10. The Spanish version of Dracula is also included. Special features are listed below, where you can also see more of the packaging.

Freikugel / フライクーゲル

Freikugel (JP: フライクーゲル; rōmaji: furaikūgeru) is the Hero's Relic tied to the Crest of Goneril. Rather than pulling from classic Norse and Germanic folklore, this axe references far more modern legends. The Freischütz, literally meaning "the free shooter" but often localized as "the marksman," refers to a man that made a deal with the devil. He is provided with a collection of magic bullets called Freikugeln (singular: Freikugel; lit. "free bullet") that will always strike their target. However, at least one of these bullets will be controlled by the devil, often causing the marksman's downfall. The earliest forms of this legend, traced to at least the late fifteenth century in Malleus Maleficarum in written form, had a man shoot a cross with an arrow in an attempt to gain three that he could guide when used. This would morph into the myth of forging bullets at night with the aid of witchcraft.

The most famous version of the story, written by Johann August Apel and Friedrich Laun, would be adapted into the opera Der Freischütz by Carl Maria von Weber and Friedrich Kind. In the story, the forester Max needs to prove himself in marksmanship before the prince to take his beloved Agathe for a wife. His friend and senior forester Kaspar, who longs for Agathe but was rejected, shows Max in private the ability of his last Freikugel, swaying him to cast more bullets so he can guarantee his marriage. In truth, Kaspar sought revenge against Agathe and the dead of Max. When he convened with his forbidden connection of Samiel, he sold Max's soul for seven bullets and a promise that one of them would be dead the next day. Before they arrive at the ceremony, Max and Kaspar used six Freikugeln: only the devil's bullet remained. When that bullet was loosed, it struck Kaspar, leaving Max to reveal the sin they committed.

The reference to the Freischütz is likely meant to relate to the character of Hilda, the only character able to use it at full strength. After all, she's the type of girl to take the easy way out, and gets others to do things for her. By using Freikugeln, Max and Kaspar tried to take the easy way out, rather than actually proving themselves.

The combat art Apocalyptic Flame has a few layers to its name. Firstly, in invokes the concept of the apocalypse, the end of the world as we know it. Typically the word apocalypse invokes the Judeo-Christian interpretation of the world's conclusion. Most prominent of these is the Book of Revelation from the New Testament, an event often depicted with fire raining upon the earth (said to occur after the first of the seven trumpets is sounded). Interestingly, the events of Revelation are supposed to bring the end of the devil Satan and sin, despite the axe being named after what he has dominion over.

In Japanese, Apocalyptic Flame is called 劫火 (rōmaji: gōka). This is a term used in Buddhism and Hinduism to refer to the fire that destroys the world in those faiths' apocalypses. In both the Buddhist apocalypse and the Hindu Pralaya, after a kalpa or aeon (JP: 劫; rōmaji: kō)—a bit longer than four-billion years in Hinduism—feature the world engulfed in the heat of seven suns. For the Buddhists, those who survive the destruction of the earth are the faithful. According to Hinduism, all life on earth would die out in a hundred-year drought prior to the entire universe being set ablaze. After total destruction, the god Vishnu brings a century of rain to bring an end to the fires, and Brahma creates the universe anew. Additionally, the name 劫火 is pronounced similarly to the word 豪��� (rōmaji: gōka), which refers to a showy life of luxury, appropriate for Hilda's character.

Raden Saleh Syarif Bustaman

(1811 – 23 April 1880) was born in the village of Terboyo, near Semarang on the island of Java in the Dutch East Indies (present-day Indonesia).

He was born into a noble Hadhrami family; his father was Sayyid Husen bin Alwi bin Awal bin Yahya. He was the grandson of Sayyid Abdullah Bustam through his mother, Raden Ayu Sarif Husen bin Alwi bin Awal. Through his sister, Roqayah, Raden Saleh was uncle by marriage to the famous religious leader Habib Ali Kwitang.

He was considered to be the first "modern" artist from Indonesia (then the Dutch East Indies), and his paintings corresponded with nineteenth-century romanticism which was popular in Europe at the time. He also expressed his cultural roots and inventiveness in his work.

Young Raden Saleh was first taught in Bogor by the Belgian artist A.J. Payen. Payen acknowledged the youth's talent, and persuaded the colonial government of the Netherlands to send Raden Saleh to the Netherlands to study art. He arrived in Europe in 1829 and began to study under Cornelius Kruseman and Andreas Schelfhout.

It was from Kruseman that Raden Saleh studied his skills in portraiture, and later was accepted at various European courts where he was assigned to do portraits. While in Europe, in 1836 Saleh became the first indigenous Indonesian to be initiated into Freemasonry. From 1839, he spent five years at the court of Ernest I, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, who became an important patron.

From Schelfhout, Raden Saleh furthered his skills as a landscape painter. Raden Saleh visited several European cities, as well as Algiers. In The Hague, a lion tamer allowed Raden Saleh to study his lion, and from that his most famous painting of animal fights was created, which subsequently brought fame to the artist. Many of his paintings were exhibited at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Several of his paintings were destroyed when the Colonial Dutch pavilion in Paris was burnt in 1931.

23 April 1880, Saleh suddenly fell sick. He claimed that he was poisoned by one of his servants, and subsequently died; however post-mortem examination showed that his circulatory system was disrupted due to a clot near his heart. Saleh was buried two days later in Kampung Empang, Bogor. As reported in Javanese Bode newspaper, 28 April 1880, his funeral was "attended by various landheeren [landlords] and Dutch officials, and even by curious students from nearby school.

During his stay in Paris, Saleh met Horace Vernet whose painting frequently took themes of African wildlife. Compared to Vernet, Saleh's painting seems to be more influenced by the romantic painter Eugène Delacroix. This could be seen in one of Saleh's work, Hunting Lion, 1840, which has similar composition to Delacroix's Liberty Leading the People. However, Werner Kraus, a researcher in the Southeast-Asian Art Center of Passau, Germany, said that Saleh "never mentioned Delacroix. Perhaps he saw Delacroix's, and possibly Vernet's, works during an exhibition.

The Arrest of Pangeran Diponegoro

Raden Saleh is particularly remembered for his historical painting, The Arrest of Pangeran Diponegoro,   which depicted the betrayal of the rebel leader Prince Diponegoro by the colonial government, thus ending the Java War in 1830. The Prince was tricked into entering Dutch custody near Magelang, believing he was there for negotiations of a possible cease-fire. He was captured through treachery and later deported.

The event had been previously painted by a Dutch painter Nicolaas Pieneman, commissioned by Lieutenant General Hendrik Merkus de Kock. It is thought that Saleh saw this painting during his stay in Europe. Saleh made significant changes in his version of the painting; Pieneman painted the scene from the right, Saleh from the left.

Pieneman depicts Diponegoro with resigned expression, while in Saleh's he appears to be outraged. Pieneman gave his painting the title Submission of Prince Diponegoro, while Saleh gave The Arrest of Pangeran Diponegoro. It is known that Saleh deliberately painted Diponegoro's Dutch captors with large heads to make them appear monstrous, as opposed to the more proportionally depicted Javanese.

Raden Saleh’s work has been regarded as a sign of incipient nationalism in what was then the Dutch East Indies / Indonesia. This can also be seen it the depiction of Diponegoro's men. Pieneman had never been to the Indies, and so depicted Diponegoro's men in a more Arabic fashion. Saleh's version has a more accurate depiction of native Javanese clothing, with some figures wearing batik and blangkon.

Saleh finished this painting in 1857 and presented it to Willem III of Netherlands in The Hague. It was returned to Indonesia in 1978 as a realization of a cultural agreement between the two countries in 1969, regarding the return of cultural items which were taken, lent, or exchanged to the Dutch in the previous eras. Even though the painting did not fall under any of those categories, because Saleh presented it to the King of the Netherlands and it was never in the possession of Indonesia, it was nevertheless returned as a gift from the Royal Palace of Amsterdam, and is currently displayed at the Merdeka Palace Museum in Jakarta.

Art

Germany not only has beautiful landscapes and wonderous festivals, but there is also a large art culture surrounding the country that it is difficult to not know of at least one musician/author/artist that was originally from Deutschland or surrounding German speaking areas. Support of the arts is also something that the government is also focused on maintaining since the 1800’s. There are hundreds of theaters in Germany, and finding a local symphony orchestra isn’t something incredibly difficult to do. Now I don’t think I could even barely scratch the surface of all the influential, talented individuals that came from Germany. I can however give you some more information about a couple of the most well-known people that originated from Germany.

Starting off, we’re going to talk about Jacob Ludwig Carl Grimm and Wilhelm Carl Grimm. You may have heard of the Brothers Grimm before or maybe you’ve heard of some of their tales, especially if you enjoy Disney content. They brothers were born in 1785-86 and were the oldest siblings in their family of six children. These boys ended up taking care of their family when both of their parents passed, and both attended University of Marburg studying law. Jacob ended up working in Paris doing legal research and ended up working as a librarian to King Jérôme of Westphalia then an auditeur in the highest court in France until Napoleon’s defeat. After returning to Hessian service, he travelled to Paris to retrieve stolen art and literature that were taken from Prussia and Hesse. Wilhelm started around this time at a library is Kassel and Jacob eventually joined him at, and from this point on did the brothers focus on literature and research into it. They began collecting different folk literature, songs, and poetry and accumulated them all into a collection that contained over 200 short stories and called it Kinder und Hausmärchen. This book is what we know today as the Grimm Brother’s tales that include stories like Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, and Little Red Riding Hood. The brothers also accomplished quite a bit more involving philosophy, teaching at an university and were even exiled from the country they lived because of their political beliefs. Another influential person to come from Germany is a name you might also be familiar with, and that is Johann Sebastian Bach. Bach was born in 1685 and was born into a long line of musicians. His father is credited for teaching Bach the violin, however both of his parents ended up passing away when Johann was only ten years old. After they died, he ended up learning how to play the organ by his brother, and furthered his musical education after he was accepted into a school in Lüneburg. He continued his education and became a violinist/organist for Duke Johann Ernst for a short while. Then he bounced around as an organist for multiple different churches, but really wanted to get out there and continue to listen/learn more music from different places. After clashing with a few different churches, he returned to the duke’s court and ended writing some music that is still heard today like “Toccata and Fugue in D Minor”. A few years later, Bach tried to leave the duke for a musical position for Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Cöthen, and Duke Ernst imprisoned for a couple months for it. He didn’t want to let him go, but eventually was released. During his time for the prince, he was able to focus on his music writing and shifted gears into a more orchestra concerto. This continued for a few years until the prince married someone who didn’t enjoy music. Prince Leopold ended up dissolving Bach’s orchestra officially in 1723. He then went back to a church in Leipzig and performed as well as taught music to others. This didn’t stop his music writing all the way until his passing in 1750. Bach was an incredibly accomplished man, and also wrote a few books during his lifespan.
