ON GHOSTS AND DEMONS: Wei Wuxian's "demonic" cultivation?

There are a few big misconceptions I have repeatedly seen in English-speaking fandom about things that are fundamental to the story of MDZS. One of them is this—

Wei Wuxian is not a demonic cultivator.

To prove this, let's take a deep dive into the original Chinese text of MDZS.

(Adapted from my original gdoc posted on Twitter on May 27, 2022. All translations my own unless otherwise stated.)

Demon vs. ghost

Let's start from the very basics. In addition to orthodox cultivation using spiritual energy and a golden core, there are two other forms of cultivation that are mentioned in the novel:

魔道 (mó dào), or “demon cultivation/path.”

鬼道 (guǐ dào), or “ghost cultivation/path.”

To be clear, 魔 mo "demons" and 鬼 gui "ghosts" (and thus their respective cultivation/paths) are not interchangeable because of the in-universe worldbuilding within MDZS. Using the characters in the term 妖魔鬼怪 "monsters," MXTX created four distinct categories of beings, each of which has a strict definition in the novel. From chapter 4 (jjwxc ch 13):

妖者非人之活物所化; 魔者生人所化; 鬼者死者所化; 怪者非人之死物所化。 Yāo (妖) are transformed from non-human living beings; mó (魔) are transformed from living people; guǐ (鬼) are transformed from the deceased; guài (怪) are transformed from non-human dead beings.

And of course, WWX hoards all the ghost-type pokemon monsters at the Phoenix Mountain tournament, and he only exerts control over corpses, spirits, and the like (aka people who have already died). (As opposed to Xue Yang, who appears to have been actively trying to make 魔 "demons" out of living people with those "living corpses" of his, perhaps.) (And, ironically, in order to avoid showing necromancy / zombies on screen, CQL technically does show WWX practicing demon cultivation because everyone is "supposedly alive" even when they're corpses? Which is, funnily enough, far worse morally in the MDZS universe, lol.)

So, intuitively at least, we know that WWX must be practicing ghost cultivation—now let's look at some concrete examples from the book.

Running the numbers

1) 魔道 (mó dào) means “demon cultivation.” As such, it must use living humans.

魔道 appears one (1) time in the novel.

Yes, once. The only time it appears is in the term 魔道祖师 modao zushi, or the namesake of the novel, in chapter 2. This is a title the general public has given him through rumors:

魏无羡好歹也被人叫了这么多年无上邪尊啦、魔道祖师啦之类的称号，这种一看就知道不是什么好东西的阵法，他自然了如指掌。 Wei Wuxian wasn’t called titles like “The Evil Overlord,” “The Founder of Demon Cultivation,” and so on over the years by others for nothing—he knew these sorts of obviously shady formations like the back of his hand.

2) 鬼道 (guǐ dào) means “ghost cultivation.” As such, it must use dead humans. 

鬼道 appears 12 times in the novel.

Here is the first instance that 鬼道 appears, which I believe is the first time Wei Wuxian's method of cultivation is properly introduced. From chapter 3 (jjwxc ch 8):

蓝忘机 […] 对魏无羡修鬼道一事极不认可。 Lan Wangji […] had never approved of the fact that Wei Wuxian practiced ghost cultivation.

Here's another quote from chapter 15 (jjwxc ch 71) for funsies:

蓝忘机看着��，似乎一眼就看出他只是随���敷衍，吸了一口气，道：“魏婴。” Lan Wangji looked at him as if he saw through his half-hearted bluff. He took in a breath, then said, “Wei Ying.” 他执拗地道：“鬼道损身，损心性。” He stubbornly continued, “Ghost cultivation harms one’s body, and harms one’s nature.”

3) 邪魔歪道 (xiemowaidao) means heretical path/immoral methods/evil practices/underhanded means/etc—e.g., lying, cheating, stealing, bribery, and so on.

It appears ~24 times in the novel.

I mention this last term because it is often used to refer to Wei Wuxian's cultivation, but as a pejorative. Every instance of 邪魔歪道 is said by or to quote someone looking down upon Wei Wuxian’s cultivation (Jin Zixun, Jin Ling, etc.) and referring to it derogatorily, whereas every instance of 鬼道 guidao/ghost dao is said by someone discussing it neutrally and/or factually (Lan Jingyi, Lan Wangji, Wei Wuxian himself, random cultivators at discussion conferences, the narration, etc.). Here is a pertinent example with Jin Ling (derogatory) and Lan Jingyi (neutral) in chapter 9 (jjwxc ch 43):

金凌怒道：“是在谈论薛洋，我说的不对吗？薛洋干了什么？他是个禽兽不如的人渣，魏婴比他更让人恶心！什么叫‘不能一概而论’？这种邪魔歪道留在世上就是祸害，就是该统统都杀光，死光，灭绝！” “We are discussing Xue Yang,” Jin Ling said angrily. “Am I wrong? What did Xue Yang do? He’s scum that’s lower than a beast, and Wei Ying is even more disgusting than him! What do you mean ‘don’t make sweeping generalizations?’ As long as those practicing this kind of demoniac, heretical path are alive, they’ll continue to bring disaster. We should slaughter all of them, kill all of them, annihilate them once and for all!” 温宁动了动，魏无羡摆手示意他静止。只听蓝景仪也加入了，嚷道：“你发这么大火干什么？思追又没说魏无羡不该杀，他只是说修鬼道的也不一定全都是薛洋这种人，���有必要乱摔东西吗？那个我还没吃呢……” Wen Ning shuffled around. Wei Wuxian gestured at him to stay still, only to hear Lan Jingyi also cut in loudly, “Why are you getting so riled up? It’s not like Sizhui said Wei Wuxian shouldn’t have been killed. All he said was that people who practice ghost cultivation aren’t necessarily all like Xue Yang. Do you have to go around breaking things? I didn’t even get to eat any of that yet…”

Tl;dr—Wei Wuxian does not 修魔道 practice demon cultivation. When Wei Wuxian’s craft is discussed in a neutral and factual manner, it is referred to as 鬼道 ghost dao. 

In fact, Wei Wuxian’s imitators are also referred to explicitly as 鬼道修士 ghost cultivators.

魏无羡早就听说过，这些年来江澄到处抓疑似夺舍重生的鬼道修士，把这些人通通押回莲花坞严刑拷打。 Wei Wuxian had heard a while back that over the past few years, Jiang Cheng had gone around snatching any ghost cultivator suspected of being possessed or reborn, detaining them in Lotus Pier to interrogate them using torture.

So why the confusion?

Of course, there is the matter of the novel's title, which I will get into in a second. But the real issue is a matter of translation.

The idea that WWX uses "demonic cultivation" is a misconception in English-speaking fandom due to issues with the translation of terminology. Of note, EXR actually did translate 鬼道 guidao as "ghostly path" most of the time, though there were at least 3 instances of "demonic" and 1 instance of "dark," especially regarding the first few.

However, this misconception was perpetuated (and arguably worsened) by 7S's official translation, which not only mistranslated additional terms as "demonic cultivation/path" (at least in book 1), but also consistently mistranslated every instance of 鬼道 as "demonic cultivation/path."

So why is this book called 魔道祖师, commonly translated as "Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation?"

One possibility is one posed in Chinese-language meta online, which often cites that WWX himself is a sort of 魔 demon. While this may be true—after all, he can hear the voices of the dead—it doesn't quite explain the fact that the title sets him up to be the 祖师 or "founder."

My take is that this novel is very much concerned with hearsay vs. truth. This is one of the many monikers WWX is given by the public, who collectively view him as evil. (Also of note is that the non-cultivator public is not aware of all the nuances that cultivators learn re: distinctions between the 妖魔鬼怪 monsters.) In the quote from earlier, note that the first title we're given is actually 无上邪尊 “The Evil Overlord,” then 魔道祖师 "The Founder of Demon Cultivation." Like, what can that be other than MXTX telling us, "please take both of these with a HUGE grain of salt, lol."

(And not only the title, but the very first line—"魏无羡死了。" / "Wei Wuxian is dead."—is a lie.)

I think the title is genius, honestly. It intentionally makes readers come into the novel with preconceived notions that Wei Wuxian practices 魔道 demon cultivation and evil techniques—just like the public in the novel. What better way to tell a story warning about the dangers of how easy it is to fall for misinformation and jump to incorrect conclusions?

(Though, in our case, perhaps it worked a little too well.)

A/N: Despite NO ONE asking for this. I decided to make these intros based on the reader from this request. Because of her backstory, my mind started concocting scenarios of her meeting certain characters besides her family. So, I hope y'all like this one.

Night Wolf: You’re not the only that harbors guilt for their past actions.

Y/N: If you allow it, I would toss it into the Sea of Blood, far from anyone's reach.

Y/N: I left his side decades ago, and he then tried to have me killed.

Raiden: It's no surprise that Quan-chi doesn't value even his own family.

Spawn sympathetically: I'm afraid the Netherrealm is not through with you.

Embers Academy Spellcasting Tournament: Spells (Group 4)

rules:

students need to learn 2 spells from each magic school. for finishing spells on the first hour, they get 20 points (separately for each school). for finishing on the second hour, 12 points. the third hour will bring 8 points, and the fourth hour 4 point. further than four hours is 0. the task is to learn two spells, so learning only one is considered failing the assignment, and it will only bring you 2 sad pity points

there's an additional practical task of creating 3 dishes with grand delicioso spell. score for this part is the sum of dishes' prices (spoiled dish gives 0, excellent quality dish gives x2 to the price) divided by 20

just as in the potions challenge, their autonomy is off, but if someone decides to stop learning for whatever reason and do something else, i will let them finish whatever they decided to do before returning them back to the task

oh god, gemma leaned spells with average success, which is not as good as she thought she'd do, given her bloodline and the pressure from her family

dax also didn't have a very high score, but it's consistent with their lore of just a small guy with a bit of magic in them, so i actually love it

poor grandpa wanted to learn household spells that would make his life easier, guess which spells he didn't learn? yeah. however, maybe with that necromancy spell that he did learn by mistake he can get some help around the house?

Camilla Hect and Palamades Sextus (Campal) from The Locked Tomb vs. Jessie and James from Pokémon!

Propaganda for Campal:

They're two people who have spent their whole lives together and are hopelessly devoted and loyal to each other. While some people do read their relationship as strictly romantic or platonic, it has way more going for it through a QP lense! They've been lifelong friends, and in their culture are essentially non-romantic life partners as a necromantic wizard and his bodyguard/champion. It's actually strictly taboo for them to engage in a romantic relationship because of this. But nonetheless they remain close to and devoted to each other, going so far as to use necromancy to keep each other close after one of them dies, and then going on to share a body until it becomes physically impossible to do so any longer. So they burn both of their souls to merge together into one new entity, creating a walking metaphor for queerplatonic partnership. They endlessly support and encourage each other, they're a perfect team when it comes to both peaceful study and combat. They know each other inside and out, long before they had to share a body, they were inseperable. They're two halves of one whole, literally, and nothing about that intense closeness and partnership is written to be romantic! Especially because other, similar characters in the series ARE written to read as romantic, and there's a distinct tonal difference to those relationships! Basically, they're two peas in a pod, two halves of a whole, clearly not quite platonic with it, but certainly not romantic either.

The author of The Locked Tomb has a long term queerplatonic partner! She even dedicates the books to him and signs those dedications with a <> (which is a Homestuck reference, denoting a non-romantic partnership that a number of fans associate with QPPs!). You can feel the influence of her own experience with queerplatonic attraction in a lot of the series, but it really comes through especially in Cam and Pal!!

A name that makes all Sims tremble. They whisper, "Have you seen him? I heard he never takes off his blue cardigan. I heard his khaki pants bear the face of God in their pockets. I heard he stood in a fire for an hour once and didn't die."

Occasionally an impressionable young Sim dressed all in black will say, "Yeah, I heard he burned down his house with his family inside and that he haunts the valley and that the waterfall there always smells like smoke, but damn he looks good in that blue cardigan of his."

Seth is my original Sim, created lovingly in Sims 3 CAS lo these many years ago.

He also made the transition to Sims 4.

He first appeared in the Sims 3 story In The Valley Of The Sun. Its pictures are currently lost somewhere in Photobucket, but the basic idea was that he set his house by Sunset Valley's waterfall on fire, killing his wife. Years later a young woman named Lilith came to investigate the abandoned house, which was said to be haunted. Seth was actually still very much alive, though he haunted Lilith through the narrative. At least until Lilith set a fire herself, taking them both out.

A longer work with Sims 4 pics: Emo Pistols. An epistolary story told through Seth's letters to his two penpals, Jasper and Anya. In this one he is finally attempting to heal from his trauma, as you can see from this excerpt:

Sarah does, sometimes.  She is still here. I told her the truth, and she didn’t break or burn. She didn’t disappear into the sun. She is the Sarah who stayed.

I love my Seth baby very much. I hope he might meet some new friends through this tournament, and perhaps I will gain some inspiration to write more words about him as well. :)

Things Sax does extremely well: fainting and bleeding (separately), fainting and bleeding (combination), rotting in bed, crying or being completely stoic (no in between), causing more problems while trying to fix his previous problems, omitting certain truths (aka lying).

Now, I don't know if he really counts as an SWMM because he's not a classic villain... but in his pursuit of Doing The Right Thing he has made some awful choices. Good intentions, poor outcomes.

In an attempt to save his sister, he left his post and facilitated the escape of a world-devouring entity which he was supposed to help contain.

After his sister died he made another attempt to save her, via necromancy, and instead doomed her to an endless cycle of death and rebirth. Until recently, none of her reincarnations were healthy enough to survive infancy.

He befriended the parents of this latest incarnation without filling them in on the backstory, or his motives. After they were killed by his enemy, he took the baby and kept her hidden for 11 years (did she have grandparents, uncles, aunts? Yes, probably. He claims they couldn't have cared for her like he did and technicallyyyy he's right, since her survival required magic, but...)

He broke the arm of one of his 'adopted' adult kids (he has an enchanted cottage which has been a refuge for a lot of people) when said adult tried to prevent him from killing someone else. Yes, technically he did only push Thom and didn't intend for Thom to hit the wall so hard, but...

Long story short but his home world didn't end, it was just knocked out of its timeline for a while. Unfortunately, due to his actions on the day the Grim escaped (attacking portal guards and forcing his way through the rift, just as an unrelated-to-him group stormed the castle), he was a) assumed dead and b) immediately arrested on his return for treason and attempted regicide.

He's a constant menace and cause of stress to his man, the kindest and sweetest soul to ever live. He doesn't mean to be, it's just that his attempts to keep Fen safe often seem to involve risking himself in increasingly creative and fatal ways.

Why should you vote for Sax? Well, I think his endless complex trauma and the fact that almost all his misfortunes happened because he was trying to fix things/help people makes him pretty damn tragic and definitely very damp. He could do with a win. Plus... look at him. 🥲

He anthropomorphized the earth to look like Barbie and then imprisoned her on Pluto after entwining their souls for eternity. He wants to eat the rich. His idea of a utopia involves no internet and it’s the one correct thing he’s ever done Postdoc researcher who had his funding pulled so he went a little insane about it and consumed the soul of the earth, ascended to godhood, killed everyone alive and then resurrected some of them (most likely exclusively New Zealand) and then spent ten thousand years as the god emperor of an intergalactic necromancy cult. If he dies the sun will explode so everyone has to deal with his terrible puns and eating peanuts in meetings and also all the murder and gaslighting. The fandom hates Jod (John + God), and he’s being built up to be a major antagonist in the books. In-universe, he is The Most Powerful person and has been alive for 10,000 years, so I really want to see him make it into the tournament and then lose to some cringe-fail minor deity I know he's already been submitted a bunch of times but I adore this loser god. Best horrible dad. So manipulative, and at the same time kind of pathetic, I find him fascinating.

Btw in case anyone is curious on the exact behind-the-scenes of the final poll I'll put that below the cut.

Firstly, I gotta pat myself on the back for the idea of a personality quiz. I knew if I did a straight up gerrymandered poll against Jaylen she would have probably have BETTER odds cause people who (correctly) thought of my as the antagonist of this blog would vote for her because it was a vote against me. And from there people would easily coordinate 1 option to all vote for. So I hid the gerrymandering out of sight, and made the gimmick fun so that people didn't ignore it outright.

Now lets go over how exactly it was gerrymandered. Each answer to each question was either a Senshi answer or a Jaylen answer. To get Jaylen you had to get more of her answers then senshi's (so 3, since there are 5 questions)

On question 1 you will immediately see my trick. Despite there being 5 options only 1 gives Jaylen. I saw quite a few guess as much so I'll quickly list all the other Jaylen answers. for "feelings on necromancy" her's is "I'm literally a reanimated corpse", For the door you gotta say fuck you, and for my sentence you gotta pick eternal failure.

Keen eyed ඞmong you may realise that I skipped "pick one of the things I just made made up question" That is because all the answers to that question are Senshi answers. The question is purely to tilt the odds more in my favor, poke fun at uQuiz, and reference Gloopgolp World.

Embers Academy Spellcasting Tournament: Spells (Group 1)

rules:

students need to learn 2 spells from each magic school. for finishing spells on the first hour, they get 20 points (separately for each school). for finishing on the second hour, 12 points. the third hour will bring 8 points, and the fourth hour 4 point. further than four hours is 0. the task is to learn two spells, so learning only one is considered failing the assignment, and it will only bring you 2 sad pity points

there's an additional practical task of creating 3 dishes with grand delicioso spell. score for this part is the sum of dishes' prices (spoiled dish gives 0, excellent quality dish gives x2 to the price) divided by 20

just as in the potions challenge, their autonomy is off, but if someone decides to stop learning for whatever reason and do something else, i will let them finish whatever they decided to do before returning them back to the task

rhiannon is the best in her group! she didn't get maximum score for any particular magic school, but she got very decent scores for all of them. easy does it.

speaking of "easy", estelle decided to take it really easy this time. she kept dropping spells to stand around and do nothing, then went to judge decor, then without any prompt just decided to go home :D

aurora didn't learn any untamed spell at all, but good score at mischief magic still placed her decently high. she and maxwell kept learning spells at the same moment

it seems maxwell is a necromant in the making, while everyone was learning ice and fire spells, max learned minionize and necrocall. they also kept paying attention to how attractive and unattractive people around are, so learning spells took quite some time

for lyle mischief magic was fairly easy, but untamed was very hard, he completed it 3 minutes before failing. nevertheless, he completed everything. he also crushed on phoenix

i mean, i understand him, i kinda crushed on her too. sadly, her points are average, she was very decent at untamed and practical, but didn't learn any mischief at all. not a single mean bone in her body.

they synchronized with neven. and get off your phone, neven! sigh, teenagers. i wouldn't say his score is very high, but he was the best in cooking

alexandria was thinking about kitties while practicing. she wasn't successfull at mischief magic, but was so good at untamed that she'd still be the first if she wouldn't fail her most expensive dish. she's on the second place in her group, just one point behind rhiannon

👹 Origins of Araceli "Cage" 👹

Araceli is the daughter of a female shape-shifting Yōkai and an Oni Yōkai. Shape-shifting Yōkai can have the appearance of both humans and different beings of their own kind. (https://yokai.fandom.com/wiki/Category:Shape-shifting)

To put it clearly and in a summarized way, she is not human or half-human, she is entirely Yōkai.

🤍 Any future generation of part of her blood will have these characteristics, being considered a curse or a blessing depending on how they look at it. (Johnny Jr, for example, was born with the appearance of an Oni like his grandfather, but all of Araceli's children have Yōkai abilities regardless of their human appearance.)

👻 The powers of Necromancy come from the dark magic that Araceli's mother practiced through offerings and helping beings of her own species. When she became pregnant, she asked the souls in pain of Netherrealm to protect her daughter from suffering the same fate as them. In this way, the young woman was born with the power to have the souls in pain in her possession, company, and help, although she discovered this when she was already of age.

Actually the souls in pain (the ones I usually draw with Araceli) were always there protecting her, but she didn't find out until the Mortal Kombat tournament where they came to light and were seen at the moment when the girl urgently needed their protection.

[These powers cannot be inherited unlike the Yōkai powers, since this request for protection was only for Araceli, unless she asks them to protect her children too.]

👹‼️ Both of Araceli's biological parents are alive, they live in Netherrealm and do not know the whereabouts of their daughter, but in the future they would meet. Despite meeting her real parents in the future, Araceli would continue to see her adoptive father Bo'Rai Cho in the same way, of course.

Ok now with these changes the story seems to make sense to me. I was never completely happy with the fact that she was the daughter of a returnee hahaha so I decided that Araceli was completely from Netherrealm with both of her parents being Yōkai, and that better explains her origins and her powers.
