I keep pausing the damn van scene, but not because of Byler. Because of freaking Jonathan.
This scene could have been perfectly filmed without moving to Jonathan once, but not only does it show what he sees in the mirror, it also zeros in on the absolute confusion on his face. That just really adds to it all, doesn't it? Because Jonathan is Will's brother, knows him better than almost anyone else. Jonathan is also El's brother. He knows for a fact that, despite the bullying and shit going on in her life, El has not been lost. Will had been, however. And Jonathan knows that. As Will starts crying, the camera pans to Jonathan again. He has tears welling up in his eyes. Jonathan cares so deeply for his brother. Even through senior slump, and losing hope for a future for himself, and pushing everyone away, and losing himself, Jonathan cares so deeply for his brother.
And if it's not said directly, I think the way the camera pans to Jonathan, and sees how his brother opens up to Mike but slaps his sister's name over it, and shows how confused he is -- but confusion does lead to understanding -- it's shown beautifully.

BARBARA EDEN
August 23, 1931
Barbara Eden was born Barbara Jean Morehead in Phoenix Arizona in 1931, although for years her birth year was thought to be 1934. It was fairly common for young actresses to lie about their age in Hollywood. After her parents divorced, her mother married a telephone lineman, the same profession as Lucille Ball’s father. Eden's first public performance was singing in the church choir. As a teenager, she sang in local bands in night clubs. At age 16, she studied singing and acting. She graduated from High School in San Francisco in the Spring Class of 1949. As Barbara Huffman, she was elected Miss San Francisco in 1951 and she also entered the Miss California pageant. Her name was changed to Eden by her first agent.
“If gentlemen prefer blondes then I'm a blonde that prefers gentlemen.” ~ Barbara Eden
Eden began her television career as a semi-regular on “The Johnny Carson Show” (not to be confused with “The Tonight Show”) in 1955.
Contrary to popular belief, "I Love Lucy” was not Eden’s first small screen appearance. She had been seen in a November 1956 episode of “West Point.”
She had also made the RKO film Back from Eternity, a remake of a Lucille Ball film called Five Came Back, which would not be released until later in 1957. It was directed by John Farrow (Mia’s father) and co-starred Keith Andes, who would play Lucy Carmichael’s boyfriend on “The Lucy Show” and co-star with Ball in Wildcat on Broadway in 1960. Eden played a college reporter and was uncredited. Coincidentally, the film also featured Tristram Coffin, who played Diana Jordan’s cousin Harry Munson in “Country Club Dance.”
In “Country Club Dance” (ILL S6;E25), the male population of Westport is all agog when sexy Diana Jordan (Barbara Eden) visits. Lucy, Ethel and Betty Ramsey decide that getting glamorous is the best revenge. The now-classic episode was filmed on March 21, 1957 and first aired on April 22, 1957.
Needless to say, that night at the Westport Country Club shapely young Diana’s ‘dance card’ is full! Pat Boone (not in attendance, but mentioned) was Diana’s favorite singer!
William Asher, the director of this episode, would later direct Barbara Eden in the short-lived sitcom "Harper Valley PTA” (1981-82) and "I Dream of Jeannie… Fifteen Years Later,” a reunion special aired in 1985.
After filming was completed, Desilu gave some of its guest stars small gifts. This 10K gold-filled Zippo lighter was a present for Eden.
That same year, Eden appeared in an episode of the Desilu sitcom “December Bride” starring Harry Morgan.
In early 1962, Eden was on the Desilu backlot to play “The Manicurist” on “The Andy Griffith Show.” At the same time, “The Lucy Show” was filming its first season.
The next time Lucy and Eden appeared on screen together was at the 1968 Primetime Emmy Awards. Ball was nominated (and won) for Best Actress in a Comedy for “The Lucy Show”. “Jeannie” and Eden were then in their third season, but failed to break the top 30 and were not nominated, although Eden, as a recognizable TV figure, was present at the awards. Throughout its long run, the popular sitcom only garnered one Emmy nomination, for Sidney Sheldon’s writing. Barbara and Ball were also presenters (not together) at the 1986 Prime Time Emmy Awards.
In 1982, Lucy and Eden were among the many women (and one man in drag) assembled for “Bob Hope’s Women I Love: Beautiful and Funny.” Coincidentally, this special also featured Mary Martin, who was Larry Hagman’s (Major Nelson on “I Dream of Jeannie”) real-life mother. Eden was a favorite of Hope’s, appearing on a dozen Bob Hope specials.
Eden was present (though she did not speak or get credited) at 1984′s “All-Star Party for Lucille Ball.” Two years later they returned for “All-Star Party for Clint Eastwood.” As a former honoree, Lucy hosted, but Eden was still only an attendee.
In 1987, Lucy and Barbara joined a myriad of luminaries for “Happy 100th Birthday Hollywood” although they performed in different segments. A year later, Lucy, in one of her final TV appearances, was with Eden in “The Princess Grace Foundation’s Special Gala Tribute to Cary Grant.” Grant never acted opposite either star.
OUT OF THE BOTTLE!
In 1965, producer Sidney Sheldon signed Eden to star in his upcoming fantasy sitcom “I Dream of Jeannie” that would air on NBC. It was aimed at wooing audiences away from ABC’s fantasy sitcom “Bewitched.” Eden played Jeannie, a beautiful genie from ancient Persia set free from her bottle by astronaut and Air Force Captain (later Major) Anthony "Tony" Nelson, played by Larry Hagman.
Also in the “Jeannie” cast of regulars was Hayden Rorke (as psychiatrist Dr. Alfred Bellows), who first appeared with Lucille Ball on stage in Dream Girl (1947).
Like Eden, Rorke also did a one-off appearance on “I Love Lucy” as new neighbor Mr. O’Brien who Lucy thinks is a spy, but turns out to be just an actor.
He would later be seen on “Here’s Lucy” as a judge deciding if Lucy Carter has held an illegal raffle or not.
Lurene Tuttle, who played the President of The Wednesday Afternoon Fine Arts League in “The Club Election” (ILL S2;E19) in 1953, played Jeannie’s mother in a 1965 episode.
Phil Ober, Vivian Vance’s ex-husband and the actor who played Dore Schary in “Don Juan is Shelved” (ILL S4;E21) in 1955, played General Stone in two season one episodes of “Jeannie.”
Vinton Hayworth, who played General Schaeffer on “Jeannie” did two films with Lucille Ball: That Girl From Paris (1936) and That’s Right - You’re Wrong (1939).
Like Vance, Eden also was married to one of her co-stars and later divorced him. In 1958, Eden married Michael Ansara, who played many roles on “Jeannie” including the Blue Djinn (above).
On “Jeannie,” Major Nelson was an astronaut. On “The Lucy Show” Lucy Carmichael was an astronaut (for a day) in a season one episode. Like “Jeannie” this episode was written to capitalize on America’s space race.
In 1971, “Here’s Lucy” also did an astronaut-themed episode. By that time, American astronauts had landed on the moon! Coincidentally, actor Robert Hogan (center in both photos) also played an astronaut on “Jeannie” in 1970.
“Jeannie” was produced by Sheldon Leonard, who played himself on a 1967 episode of “The Lucy Show”.
Like “The Lucy Show”, “Jeannie” premiered in black and white before switching to color for the remainder of its run.
Other actors who appeared on both “Jeannie” and “Lucy”: George DeNormand, Benny Rubin, Jackie Coogan, J. Pat O’Malley, Reta Shaw, Richard Reeves, Romo Vincent, Jonathan Hole, Kathleen Freeman, Bill Quinn, Herbie Faye, Milton Berle, Jack Carter, Jamie Farr, John McGiver, Richard Deacon, Don Ho, Alan Hewitt, Don Rickles, Alan Oppenheimer, Jack Collins, Parley Baer, Herb Vigran, Ruth McDevitt, Sandra Gould, Foster Brooks, James Hong, William Fawcett, Stafford Repp, and Sid Melton.
Eden played this role for five years and 139 episodes. In eight episodes, Eden donned a brunette wig to portray Jeannie's evil sister (also named Jeannie) who lusts after Tony Nelson, and in two episodes played Jeannie's hapless mother.
AFTER THE BALL & THE BOTTLE....
Barbara Eden later said in interviews that Lucy was a generous performer and caring person, contrasting to another (unnamed) female star she had worked with. Lucille Ball thought that Eden’s costume was not attractive enough, so Lucy and Irma Kusely (Lucy’s hairstylist) spent rehearsal time ‘bedazzling’ the dress. Ball offered to put Eden under contract at her Desilu Workshop, but Eden found out later that day that 20th Century Fox had picked up her option, so Eden graciously declined Lucy’s offer.
"It was the third job I had in Los Angeles and she was so good to me. I can’t tell you how sweet she was. I had a dress on that she didn’t think was outstanding enough. She asked me to take it off and the next thing I knew, she was sitting there putting sparkling things all over it, just to make it look better.” ~ Barbara Eden, October 2017
In 2005, Barbara Eden traveled to Jamestown to participate in Lucy-Desi Days.
Eden was married three times and had one child who died in 2001 at the age of 35.
“I've never stopped working. If you're active, you can appreciate what you did in the past, you don't feel like it's gone.” ~ Barbara Eden
AS OF TODAY!
AUGUST 23, 2020 - As of this writing, Barbara Eden is one of the oldest known surviving ADULT cast members of “I Love Lucy.” She is not, however, the oldest. Mary Ellen Kaye (Mrs. Taylor in “Lucy Hates To Leave”) is a year older than Eden, and Cher’s mother Georgia Holt (Model in “Lucy Gets A Paris Gown”) is 94.
There is no birth or death information for: Maggie Magennis (Starlet in “Don Juan and the Starlets”), Helen Silvers (Dancer Rosemary in “Lucy is Jealous of Girl Singer"), Barbara Logan (Stewardess in “The Ricardos Visit Cuba"), Milldred Law (Stewardess in “Return Home from Europe”), and Jody Drew (Miss Ballantine, Mr. Reilly’s Secretary in "Don Juan is Shelved").

Amazon releases the Boom! Buffy a day earlier than its published date - I thought it was just a fluke with the first digital copy, but I preordered the second issue and it happened again.
Buckle down internets, here are some mildly quick reactions to issue 2 of the Boom! reboot
okay, so the preview panels are fun to guess about and theorize but wow, dialogue really puts everything in context and all of the supposed drama that I was thinking/okay reading other people’s thoughts re: what was going to happen -- I was wrong about pretty much everything except for Buffy disliking Joyce’s boyfriend. Of a year.
who is probably most likely not evil or going to die in a horrible fashion ...right?
Nice meeting you Eric.
The pacing of this issue is just as quick as the first one - I feel because there are so many characters and such a rich mythology to draw from, that there’s going to be a long run of introducing all of them into the Boom!verse before there is a long sustained arc - that we meet 2-3 new characters each issue and then get a corner piece of the overall puzzle.
This is both good and bad - because it can be overwhelming to a new reader who may not have seen the show and is experiencing Buffy for the very first time in comic form, but for a long time fan like myself - these little introductory drips make me really impatient for what comes next. I just want to collect all the Scoobies and get to the story!
The new additions - Eric and Rose don’t strike me as anything more than love interests currently and are appropriately supportive of Joyce and Willow.
They’re more like cameos but I hope they will get fleshed out in future issues.
Onto canon characters-
Cordelia, Cordelia, Cordelia. In full Queen C/Tracey Flick mode. The twist is that there is no animosity between her and Willow, and Cordelia is that rare popular person who’s actually nice to everyone which is so not how popular media portrays high school to be. I know! Willow envies Cordelia but it’s not due to any messy romance issues, it’s because she thinks Cordelia is so much nicer, smarter and more beautiful. Rose sweetly reminds her that she is all that too.
So for everyone who was worried that just because Willow wears crop tops now she isn’t the awkward insecure muppet skinning sweetheart from the show --- she still is.
Cordelia’s confidence and charisma have been amped to 11 in the Boom!verse - she’s running for class president and already has been Ms. Sunnydale 2017 and 2018. In a conversation with Spike, she also reveals that she doesn’t care what other people think about her.
It’s interesting in this introduction of Cordelia- she’s the most overtly confident, with it character so far - Buffy has that whole secret identity she’s poorly keeping and burgeoning slayer powers, which leads to prickly independence and sassing of authority figures and also a remarkable lack of knowing how to read a room, Willow has self-doubt about her own worth, and Xander -- well those blue boxes were his blogs and feelings of alienation the entire time. They’re three separate characters that are drifting alone in the same direction, whereas Cordelia has the appearance of popularity, beauty, and connecting to others. So ...pretty parallel to the show actually.
Robin - similar to Cordelia in the confidence department - he’s also super smooth - the closing distance between him and Buffy in each descending panel was a nice touch. Buffy, who is already on edge for inadvertently showing off her slayer speed to the track coach, mistakenly thinks Robin is flirting with her - which he neatly turns around into a compliment and a flirt. It was cute, but I want to know why he fell off a roof.
But back to that other meet cute - Cordelia spots a few of her campaign balloons floating around Sunnydale woods and because she’s environmentally minded, runs to catch them.
Spike is lurking in the woods. As you do.
This dialogue:
What’s a nice British guy like you lurking around high school campuses for?
Luring girls like you into the woods.
What big eyes you have, Grandmother.
Cordelia does not interrogate Spike further about why he’s hanging out in the woods and even offers him a ride -- but this is brushed off due to Cordelia’s belief that paranoia is pointless - “..what’s the point in assuming everyone is out to getcha?”
Oh you sweet summer child.
They’re all so young, Gandalf. *sniff
And Spike knows her name, so that’s going to end up real well.
I thought it was both believable and telling that Xander’s blog box wrote “Girls don’t even have to try to be likable. A friendly smile, and they have anyone wrapped around their finger.”
Spoken like a boy who doesn’t know anything about girls. But he’s in pain and we’ve seen what happens when people are in pain and don’t reach out - as quickly as the Scooby Gang assembled in the first issue, they are distant from each other in this issue as other characters are introduced. Xander is constantly shown as an outsider looking wistfully at Willow/Rose and Cordelia. And the chat group with Buffy/Willow, he really feels left out. I honestly hope they don’t go down the path Jonathan did in Earshot with Xander’s characterization, but that last ominous blog box - When am I gonna finally get what I want? <shades of school shooter I’m just saying there’s media precedence>
And finally, to Anya and Drusilla - they’re the keepers of the Spooky and hint at an arc - what brought them to Sunnydale in the first place. Drusilla knows Anya is a demon and can’t be tortured or killed, and Anya tricks Drusilla with a psychology trick, which -- I’m not sure I like, but I will admit I laughed at Anya’s smug expression in the last panel. Bet you feel real dumb right now -- indeed. I’m going to calm down on the theorizing of future previews because they are misleading without dialogue.
So future issue: JENNY CALENDAR (Year Book Club will now be meeting in Ms. Calendar’s classroom in Room 106), the school play is Phantom of the Opera (could be worse. could be Cats.) and there’s a sinkhole in the Science Wing.
And there’s a gossip girl style bulletin at the beginning of the issue:
Ok, guys, NEW SCHOOL YEAR UPDATE! There’s a new student named Buffy and she seems SUPER cool, but also, like, super introverted? Btw I am GREAT at talking to introverts, but she spends all her time in the library with the hot dad librarian. Weird. Also, I hear she walks around a lot at night STABBING PEOPLE. Who does that? Maybe she just needs a new friend to show her that stabbing is bad!
Immediate headcanon: this is Harmony writing these updates. Also Xander’s blog has only three followers.
Final verdict - they’re still hammering out characterizations and the tone of the story, but I dislike that the Scooby Gang has basically evaporated in the second issue and that the cameos of the love interests don’t really add anything to the story except to announce their existence. Eric is totally not going to bite it at any time.
Buffy basically only hangs out in the library and hasn’t attempted to make any other friends besides Xander and Willow, there is no Dawn (and no Mr. Gordo, this is outrageous), Cordelia’s charm offensive makes me think she’s going to reveal herself as a Mayor Wilkins type later on but until then, shine on you crazy diamond. Giles is there to be annoyed at Buffy and I find myself in that odd position of being both on their sides but mostly like Giles, get your feet off the table, Buffy. I was hoping to find out more about when Buffy started training with Giles - they’re definitely not close yet, still very much in the I’m just doing this because I have to and why don’t you take your sacred calling more seriously, you frivolous American teenage girl phase. But yeah, she’s bratty to both Joyce and Giles.
Willow and Rose were there to be cute, and that’s appreciated but again - Rose didn’t really bring anything meaningful to the storyline.
Also yeah there’s a giant bat monster that kills vampires loose in Sunnydale.
Must be Tuesday.

BIOGRAPHY --
When you look at a stranger, do you ever wonder who they are, or what they’ve been through in their life? You might see tiresome eyes, windows that speak volumes of a tainted soul. It might take them a while to warm up to you. Their standoffish demeanour might attempt to mask the darkness within, conveyed only in how cold and callous they might be when in their element. Their undeniable pain is hidden behind sarcasm and witty humour. You never truly know what someone has been through unless they’re willing to share. Some find inexplicable pain in touching on a topic of events that have pained them so deeply in the past, a forever reminder of one’s own mistakes, regrets, and deeply imbedded guilt. Sometimes speaking about one’s own pain is too much to bear, and so they bury it, deep inside; a kind of black void that festers and simmers at their very core. One that is continually pushed down and ignored for fear of being crushed beneath the weight of it all. Akin to that of a volcano, when that pain festers, it builds up for a day where it finally erupts. With striking, mysterious heterochromatic hues and a positively assured demeanour — not to mention undeniable success as a lawyer — it’s no wonder Augustus ‘Gus’ Jonathan Walker regularly finds himself on the cover of magazines. Wealthy, ambitious, intelligent, passionate.. the guy was practically born with success in his veins.
With a politician for a father, a doctor for a mother, and three equally successful siblings, one would never think otherwise. The Walkers were known for their appreciation of academics and politics, and with their father now reigning as the Senator of Georgia, one would never think that there would be a black sheep of the family. Except that there was. There almost always is. Raised in Lakewood Shores in Westport, Georgia, and born into a traditional family, an abundance of expectations and responsibilities weighed upon Gus’ shoulders from the get go. During elementary, the boy was a dream. Kind to others, always polite and respectful, intelligent beyond compare. Then came middle school — and much to his father’s dismay, Gus suddenly became the school clown, the rebel, the one who always landed himself in questionable situations, with horrid reports that rendered excruciating parent teacher interviews. And it was all a result of the weighted expectations to appear ‘perfect’ to the public eye, the pressure to maintain a perfect academic record and to be a ‘responsible young man’. He wasn’t stupid; he saw the way his father treated his siblings. The way he doted upon the girls and the way he praised his brothers. Gus soon realised he was the black sheep, and no matter how much his mother absolutely adored her “little Augustus”, he knew he would never shape up to be the man his father wanted him to be.
This translated into much of high school until Gus realised in his junior year that he wanted success of his own. Success he could attribute to his own smarts and determination; a kind of success that had nothing to do with his father; something nobody expected of him. His ambitious and competitive nature prevailed as he shone through debate class competitions with an academic record so pristine, it was a complete shock for his fellow peers and teachers. Gus was suddenly the top of the grade, president of debate club, and finally, valedictorian. And with those results of his, the young guy was headed straight to the ivy league university of Yale with early entry into an undergraduate degree. Everything was running smoothly and without a hitch. Soon enough, he’d escape the confines of living under his father’s roof, and chase a life of his own. But.. not everything always runs so smoothly. Yale became something of an escape after a heavy tragedy hit the Walker family. You see, Gus was one of five siblings, and then just several days after his high school graduation, he had just four. A few moments changed his world entirely, igniting a deeply imbedded grief he’s never quite gotten over. In the car with his elder sister, Gus and little Eric were being distracting in the back seat despite requests to stop. He was consumed in his need to make Eric laugh.
Moments later, there were an abundance of deafening sounds and then, everything just went black. That was the beginning of the end of Augustus Walker as everyone knew him. The loss of his little brother left him closing up entirely, building walls around his now fragile heart so as to save himself from any torture or pain, ‘cause.. he knew if he addressed it, if he truly allowed himself to feel, he might shatter completely. It was a tragedy that forever changed the lives of the Walker family. As expected, Augustus thrived in Yale — an escape from everything he knew, before thriving during his law degree at Harvard.. even more so as he started working as an associate at a law firm on Wall St, NYC. The city would come to be his home, a place he would most certainly excel in.. and most of all, he’d never look back. Westport and everything that came with it was a memory, ingrained into the back of his mind and most certainly well into his past. When his father requested he return to Westport every so often to make public appearances during his campaign for senator, it was his mother’s pleading that was the catalyst of his ‘giving in’ to such a request. He would join his family in putting forth a strong front, feigning a good relationship with his father to help his campaign, and only for the sake of his mother. It certainly didn’t go without the occasional duplicitous comment with underlying connotations of bitterness towards his old man. Gus couldn’t help himself.. but he was far too smart to be so overtly opposed or let the truth really slip. It was just enough to let his father know that he certainly wasn’t there for his sake.
Now that his sister’s wedding is taking place, his mother has demanded his return to Westport for the week to spend a little family time before the big day. See, it isn’t easy nowadays for Gus to leave the firm considering he’s one of the head lawyers there. But, there’s an opportunity lurking at Coburn & Associates that’s rendered his interest. He’s been attempting for years to gain partnership at his firm in New York, only to be continually given false hope, turned down, and ultimately disappointed. He knows he has a flair for the game of law, strongly intuitive in the way he handles his cases that it practically renders him arrogant. His reputation i continually deemed as near ‘immature’ in his approach to work, tending to bend the rules where need be. But, Gus is never wrong and he knows it. Although his methods are often unorthodox and unprecedented, he rarely, if ever, loses a case. But it is his arrogance that keeps him stagnant in his position, with older partners firmly rendering him immature. You see, Augustus never, ever had the intention of leaving New York; he was excelling there, living the kind of luxurious lifestyle one could only dream of. He likes the faced past atmosphere, the extremely long work hours and lack of sleep. He enjoys walking down Wall St in his designer suits, breathing in the scent of lingering pollution. He likes his penthouse apartment, the women he brings home, the lack of commitment towards anything other than his career. Gus has grown accustomed to it all — but, being a partner? In a law firm? It’s an offer his ambitious self simply cannot help but consider.. and one he, deep down, can’t refuse.

Gotham - s4e02 - The Fear Reaper
As I watched it, and some random observations here and there.
Previously on Gotham.
Victor crashes a wedding. Crime is legal now. Oswald keeps you safe, not GCPD. Fried Babs. Selina wants more. Poor, poor Jonathan. Sleazy warden and the gang who all need to die. Oswald climbs Jim like a big blond tree with a constant nagging fear that it’s a fraud and gives him a hug. Bruce is arrested. Jonathan Crane isn’t here anymore – Scarecrow is.
As always, long post will be long - reaaally long. There are likely to be rambling digressions. Gobblepot may appear (although I welcome all shippers and non-shippers alike :)). There will be naked favouritism and naked not-favouritism. Broader comments at the end on plotlines and parallels and general direction.
GCPD turn up at the hideous gang's hideout. Jim tells everyone to stay cool. We see a makeshift lab. Harvey comments that,
This place smells like death
And then banters a bit about getting something to eat later. Jim isn’t in a season 1 mood, though, and tersely notes that they’ve made more toxin, as Harvey notices Jonathans old Arkham uniform. Glancing round into a mirror, Jim notices the reflection of a suspicious-looking scarecrow outside.
They both run out, and find the one of the gang guys tied up. Do they even all have names? Who cares. Fuckface #3, that’ll do. He’s terrified and tells them:
He's coming.
Who?
The scarecrow!
GCPD, where Bruce has been arrested. He’s claiming that this is all a ghastly misunderstanding. Alfred arrives, and assures Bruce that Wayne Enterprise’s most talented and expensive lawyer is on the case. If you’re going to illegally meddle in police business, it really helps to be enormously wealthy and privileged. Bruce hurriedly explains to Alfred that he fell through the skylight, when an unimpressed Jim arrives.
Bruce hastily concocts the excuse that he was up there looking for Selina. Chivalrous, Bruce. Jim releases him without bail, but promises they’ll talk more about this.
Meantime, the gang member still flipping out in the other cell.
At Arkham, where they’ve presumably been forewarned about the danger that might be heading their way. They’re roughly ushering the patients to bed and strapping them down. Fuck everything about this place.
In his office, the oleaginous warden is burning his papers. God only knows what he’s been up to. When his back is turned, Jonathan enters, dragging his scythe along the nasty table we say last time. He tells the Warden it’s too late for all that, and that his dirty deeds have stained him. Yeuch.
He talks about his treatment there for three years, upon which the warden realises who he is. Also - because, you know, he’s dressed like a giant scarecrow.
Jonathan
(Like his paternal tone last episode, his use of Jonathan’s first name here bothers me too.)
He was thrown in a cell and ignored, except for occasional ice baths (why, exactly?) and ECT.
The Warden says if he leaves now then he won’t tell anyone he’s been here. The phone rings and he makes to answer, but Jonathan slams his scythe down.
Pay attention!
Jonathan talks about he cured himself. He made himself one with his fear. The Warden, meantime, is eyeing the gun in his drawer. He tries to beg again – but Jonathan responds badly to the use of his name.
Jonathan Crane is no more. Call me by my true name!
He sprays the Warden with serum, and he begins to hallucinate.
GCPD – where Alfred and Bruce are just leaving
Rough night, Bruce?
It’s Lucius. They wheel out the Selina excuse again. Lucius is not fooled, and points out the concrete and stone residue on Bruce’s clothes. Somewhere across town, in his icy cocoon, Ed just breathed a fluttery little smitten sigh.
They come up with the terrible excuse that he’s been rock-climbing. This is the kind of rubbish lying that made Smallville’s Lex very, very cross. Lucius looks very unimpressed by this lie, but lets them leave.
Back at Arkham. Jonathan is telling the Warden that his father was a genius, who wanted to end fear for his sake, because he loved him so much.
(An aside. Oh Jonathan – possibly the rightful president of Gotham’s ‘They fuck you up, your mum and dad’ club. Your dad was a terrible, terrible person. He knowingly and repeatedly caused you fear and pain, and made you think that you should be grateful for it, and guilty for not appreciating it. His experimental design also sucked – with sample group that was both unrepresentative and too small. And I’m not even going to tell you what he did when he was the Phantom of the opera that one time….)
Anyway – it turns out the Warden’s greatest fear is clowns. We see him grab the gun from his desk and run down the corridor – shooting all the clowns he sees, who actually turn out to be his orderlies.
Meantime, Jonathan has gone to the ward, where the patients are strapped down. He calls them brothers and sisters, and tells them his father would have cured them. He was, however, murdered by GCPD. They will be his army now
(An aside – this is not a very organised army)
And those men will know fear.
GCPD
James Gordon!
Jim looks up to see Oswald walking in with a pack of reporters behind him. Harvey tells him to play nice, but Jim doesn’t want to.
Oswald approaches – and being Jim and Oswald – they decide to stand toe to toe. Oswald comments that he sees they’ve caught one, but he’s also figured out Jonathan is the likely culprit, and wants to know if Jim’s caught him. Jim tells him his whereabouts are unknown.
Oswald laughs – he’s just about taut with tension in this whole scene, I don’t think he gets the ‘no emotions’ thing – and comments that he is unsurprised by GCPD’s failure. He and Jim stare off, and Harvey thinks this is a good time to mention the newspaper headline that called him a chicken – presumably as retaliation for that last comment. Because infuriating Oswald always works so well.
Just about bubbling over with fury now, Oswald calls GCPD
Outdated, ineffectual, corrupt
Jim retaliates that the innocent suffer when criminal have a license to commit crime. Oswald tells him the scheme is working. He doesn’t want to destroy GCPD – he wants to save it, and – through that – Gotham.
Jim maintains that he will arrest those committing crimes. Oswald turns on him. He asks him how well his ‘boy scout morality’ has worked in the past, and asks if he wants a list of the victims of Jim’s ‘antiquated righteousness’.
Jim is taken aback by this. It’s pretty much nail on the head in terms of his self-image. And there’s also the fact (more at the end on this) that while he and Oswald routinely squabble – there are rules to their engagement. There’s an intake of breath when he mentions this – he didn’t quite expect this jab from this person.
Oswald offers a deal. If he can find Jonathan and lock him up in 24 hours, then fair enough. If not – he admits he failed and let the city down. Could this be anymore personal, Os?
Jim just stands there, so Oswald – to grab his arm – leans forward in this odd hugging/embrace move. His face is turned towards us as he does it, and there’s the oddest expression there. First off – the expression change as soon as his face is turned away from the press reminds us that he is almost constantly playing to an audience these days, whether that’s the journalists or his enemies. Secondly, yes - he’s mad as all hell, but there’s a whole tumult of emotion going on, and you see it for a split second when he leans close.
He leans back, gripping Jim’s arm, and shakes hands.
Good for you, Jim, game on.
Jim’s actually fairly calm throughout that whole thing. He goes from a big no to the crime licenses, to his response to the boy scout thing, and then a look of slight bafflement at Oswald’s temper.
(An aside – I know I may as well consign this to the ‘this will never be answered’ bin – but I do wonder whether Jim even expressed any remorse about Fish to Oswald? He was clearly regretful at the time – but I suspect he’s since buried it with all the other things he doesn’t want to think about).
Selina is walking alone at night. Tabitha is able to sneak up behind her, cross that she has apparently not learned much from their lessons. Turned out they both received an embossed business card which said ‘opportunity awaits’, and decided to go at night-time to an isolated building to check out the fabulous opportunity mentioned on the mysterious business card. Gotham rogues need stranger danger lessons. At this point, I don’t trust them not to get into a stranger’s car if offered sweets or puppies.
It’s from Babs it seems. She now has a lovely velvet couch. Selina and Tabitha express disbelief at her not-deadness, but Babs reminds them no-one really dies in Gotham. Tabitha would still like to slit her throat. Barbara gives her a look that is…not as easy to read as usual. I’d say that there’s an element of threat-assessment going on there. She’s trying to read her.
They walk nearer each other. Tabitha puts a knife to her throat. Barbara starts speaking. It seems sincere, but it’s also so calm that it seems planned, or trained.
Not a day goes by where I don’t think about what I did. I wish I could take it back.
Tabitha says she’d like to go back too, and finish the job. Barbara calmly continues
I was jealous. I was stupid. I am sorry
She then puts her own hand over Tabitha’s, which is holding the knife. In an echo of Oswald and Jim’s confrontation way back in season one, she says:
Kill me if you don't believe me
Like Jim, Tabitha can’t go through with that – and shoves her aside instead.
They talk briefly about what this place is. Essentially – Barbara sees a business opportunity. The Oswald-licensed crooks will need weapons (well – yes – but they seem to already have those?) – and she’s going to supply them. In doing so – they’ll learn about the crimes they plan to commit – and this is a sure-fire way to get on top again.
(An aside – uh, what? What we’ve seen is a lot of fairly low-level crime. And how would this enable them to get on top, exactly? Oswald would figure out pretty fast who would be likely to be screwing him over – even if there is a way to somehow do this. And if crooks start to draw a connection between getting guns from Babs and Tabs and your plans getting fucked over, surely they’d just go elsewhere.)
Barbara says that she won’t proceed without them both. And again – yes, she might well have lingering fondness for them both – but she also knows Tabitha is likely to bear a grudge, and Selina is really still a child. What is indispensable here, exactly?
Tabitha refuses. Barbara took something from her that she will never be able to get back, and she should feel lucky she doesn’t just raze the place to the ground. She leaves, and a still preternaturally calm Babs asks Selina to talk to her on her behalf.
Wayne Manor, where Bruce and Alfred are arguing about his lack of preparedness. Long story short, Bruce only feels truly alive when he’s falling through skylights, and Alfred is worried he’ll got shot. Bruce leaves, and Alfred angrily makes a sandwich. This incessant snack making is why he and Victor could work.
At GCPD, they’ve learned Arkham is more chaos than usual. The patients are rioting. Jim decides to head out there, and call for support – but no-one moves. They’ve chosen to back Oswald. Jim says – and just bear in mind that this is a man with two murders committed in sound mind under his belt – that none of them are fit to wear the badge.
One cop points out the badge doesn’t get you a very good time in Gotham, and they don’t make a difference. He calls on Harvey to go with him. Harvey reminds him that one day it would be now or never, and this is never. He’s Captain, and if he back Jim, he loses all the other cops – and they will need them. If they lose their help – Oswald will get to choose the next captain, and God knows who that would be – so Jim’s on his own.
Jim leaves.
Arkham – where every scary asylum trope is being hit even more so than usual. The Warden is wearing bad clown makeup and claiming that he’s not scared anymore, because he is a clown now.
Meantime Jonathan watches Jim on a monitor – and we get a quick flashback of his original episode for anyone who didn’t watch s1.
Ah - it's you
He rallies his troops over the tannoy, saying that Jim will pay for what he has done, and know fear. He closes the gates and Jim is trapped with the patients ready to attach. However, he fires warning shots and they run. Jonathan realises he’ll have to do the job himself.
Oswald, Ivy and Victor at Babs. Victor is distracted by all the guns, but Oswald is more busy listing all the different types of payment Barbara will have to make to him for him to be willing to allow this. Barbara says she’s waiting for partners to come on board. Ivy pipes up – and asks if it’s Selina and Tabitha. Oswald grins
Good luck with that – they’re slippery characters
He also comments that Tabitha might just be pissed at Barbara killing Butch.
Ivy cuts in again
I could talk to them.....
Oswald snaps at her –
I distinctly remembered saying that you could come if you kept your mouth shut
(So – aside from the fact that Ivy and Oswald are tossing the conflict ball back and forth because the writers seemingly got bored of this team-up within two minutes – you can, I suppose, understand some of his irritation. Yes - he’s snappish and dismissive, deliberately so – to explain away Ivy’s eventual defection – but he doesn’t smack down her first, relatively useful observation. What he does smack down is her offer to negotiate between his enemies: the visit is clearly meant to scope Barbara out and intimidate. The remark is stupid. He could be nicer and more respectful. He could be more restrained and not let an enemy see internal dissent. But this idea that they want to convey – Oswald is needlessly mean to Ivy - doesn’t hold water.)
Barbara smiles while Ivy sulks. Oswald promises Babs that one hint of trouble, and Victor will step in and end her with her own merchandise. As he’s leaving, he remarks that this didn’t all come cheap, and says he’ll find out who paid for her new fancy place. Victor takes a gun as he leaves.
In the Warden's office, Jim searches for Jonathan. Jonathan knocks him to the floor.
Do you believe in fate? I didn't before today.
He does now, though He can’t believe that of all the cops – Jim shows up. He unmasks. Jim blinks.
Jonathan. What happened to you?
(An aside - This is what he asked Ed, too. Jim seems to have difficulty in understanding how people are pushed past snapping point – which doesn’t really make sense, given boozy bounty-hunter Jim. Maybe it’s obviously ‘unwell’ behaviour as the outcome of strain that he can’t understand? He certainly seems incredibly unsympathetic to Barbara. Also – Jim – you’ve seen Arkham before. What kind of treatment did you think he was going to get?)
Jonathan accuses Jim of killing his father. Jim counters that his father was insane and wanted to harm him – but Jonathan, presumably due to a complete dearth of anyone else in the world giving even the slightest damn about him, has made a plaster saint of his father – and won’t be convinced.
He tells Jim,
We can live imprisoned by fears, or we can embrace them
And sprays him with the serum. I feel compelled to keep adding ‘with the serum’ when he sprays someone – otherwise it makes him sound like a misbehaving cat.
He wonders what Jim will see. His victims, perhaps?
(The serum apparently gives you unattractive yellow crust round your mouth, which – as we’re about to discover how easily it’s neutralised – is probably its worst feature.)
A dosed Jim hears screaming and wanders into a room where Lee lies in a bath full of blood, having slit her wrists. He tried to help – but she doesn’t want it.
Don't touch me, let me go. You’ve caused me so much pain. I’ve suffered you long enough. We could have been a family, had a child. You destroy everything you touch.
We see – before she sinks beneath the surface, that she has her black virus nailpolish on
Jonathan tells Jim to join her to show how much he loves her.
(Just an aside – how come Jonathan can see other people’s hallucinations?)
He tells Jim not to let her die hating him, but to prove his love – it’s what Lee would want.
Jim mutters this to himself for a bit, and is apparently able to reason his way out of the virus by remembering Lee loves him
(An aside – hang on, this sucks. Everyone else is a weeping wreck, but Jim can just power through it? First off – his hallucination is totally different. A demonic Lee, hounding him from room to room with blood streaming from her wrists would follow the pattern of the other hallucinations. But Jim get this relatively calm scene – giving him space to reflect? It also raises again the messiness at the end of last season – where Lee’s explicitly stated motivation was a fascination with the dark side, which explained her attraction to Jim. That lazily morphed into Babs’s ‘Jim and I are meant to beeeee’ in the finale. Has Jim swept all that under the carpet too?)
Having snapped out of it, he looks for Jonathan, who is as pissed as the audience.
How did you do it?! How did you defeat it?!
Inconsistent writing to further the plot, Jonathan.
Jim says he overcame his fear. Jonathan calls him a liar.
You can't just stop being afraid! You can only become your demon like I did
Jim tells him that he has a choice, in the self-assured tones of someone who never did time in Arkham.
He tells Jonathan that whatever his father was, he didn't want this for him. He needs help. Jonathan says – the first time he wobbles in his adoration of his father – that his father thought he was weak: scared little Jonathan.
Jim nods.
Ok - I can help you. Let me help you
Jonathan rallies - though
But I’m not weak anymore! I’ll never go back to being that boy!
He runs, and Jim pursues.
Bruce on another roof top. He hears laughter, and follows some shady men into a warehouse, and right into a trap. The men want to know why he’s following them, and assure him they have a license. They ask if he’s some boy scout or do-gooder. Little do they know he’s just a rich boy with an exciting new hobby.
Pulling his mask off they comment that he’s just a kid. They remind him again of the license, and that it’s within their rights to do anything they want to him. Anything. Yeuch.
Bruce headbutts one of them. A scramble ensues. Bruce manages to escape, but is followed (easily, because he confusingly decides to stroll away from the scene, instead of legging it. Even the crook comments:
You think you're so slick
He is saved from actual consequences yet again – this time by Alfred with a crowbar.
Tabitha and Selina’s apartment – where Selina is trying to convince Tabitha to overlook that whole tired murder and betrayal thing and just team up with Barbara.
(An aside – just want to point out, at the outset of a scene and storyline that are both a complete mess, that this is not in keeping at all with what we know of Selina. She’s hugely driven by loyalty, and caring for her friends. Yet she’s persuading Tabitha to overlook the inconsequential matter of betrayal and the murder of her lover? Nope)
Tabitha asks why she wants this so much. Good question. Apparently Selina is
Sick and tired of not being taken seriously by all those selfish guys out there who treat me like I'm stupid.
She can’t do much alone, but as a team, they can – give those creeps a run for their money
(An aside - this is just bilge. Does she mean Bruce? Seemed fine accepting his apology last episode – and this isn’t exactly an accurate summary of their relationship anyway. Aside from that – who does she mean? The one person who did Selina more wrong than anyone else is her mother – showing up again to swindle her. This is lazy, lazy bullshit to try and sell us on the idea of a girl gang.)
Ivy materialises in their apartment, seemingly making it past all their super sophisticated ninja skills, even though she’s about 6-foot-tall with bright red hair.
I want in
Tabitha tells her to get out and calls her a ‘penguin stooge’. Ivy retorts that she hates ‘that freak’. Tabitha tells her she’s a liar, and that she was quick to guzzle down his koolaid
(And again, Tabitha, a short, to-the-point – fuck you. Where does she find this self-righteousness? Just a reminder – got her jollies listening to a scared old woman crying and begging, and then stabbed said old woman in the back, and his demonstrated no remorse. Cherry on the cake – when a clearly child-like and damaged Oswald showed up after Arkham, she wanted to murder him, and only settled on humiliation when she wasn’t granted permission. The only reason she’s still alive is because Oswald decided not to take retribution for Butch’s sake. Tabitha’s dreadful.)
Ivy then mystifiyingly remarks that there’s
Nothing I wouldn't do to get back at men who treated me like garbage
(An aside – again wtf is this asshattery? Ivy’s abusive father aside (she uses the plural) – what we’ve seen so far is Ivy use her perfume to control men, and kill more than a couple. Why are she and Selina suddenly victims?)
Selina says she believes her, but Tabitha tells her to get out again. Ivy retorts that Tabitha is rude. Tabitha says she’s going to get her ass kicked. Selina – again out of character – says nothing. Ivy leaves.
To cap off a scene that only escalated in stupidity, Tabitha then apparently has a total change of heart and tells Selina to arrange a meeting with Babs (also seemingly discounting any risk to Selina in a lone meeting with Barbara.). She’ll talk business, but wants something in return.
Jim is still searching for Jonathan, who is rallying the patients against him.
The demon who haunts and tortures you is here! Destroy him! free yourself from his tyranny!
(An aside – but why aren’t they all distracted in their respective hallucination?! This is all so dumb.)
Jim is fighting off mental patients while Jonathan screams
Kill him!
Almost overcome – he pulls an extinguisher from the wall, and sprays with them with water. Water apparently completely neutralises the serum. Are you fucking kidding me?
Jonathan escapes. One huge guy keeps fighting, but Jim smacks him in the face with the canister, and leaves.
At Wayne Manor, Bruce and Alfred are arguing again. Bruce could have been killed, and refuses to accept the realities of what he’s doing. Maybe because you showed up with a fancy lawyer to ensure his release, Alfred?
There’s a knock at the door. Bruce opens it. A handsome man enters.
Bad time?
It’s the always collected and elegant Lucius. Wayne Enterprises has a prototype of some super-fancy armour, and he wants Bruce to have it for when he goes ‘rock-climbing’. He tells Bruce he just doesn’t want to see him hurt again. Bruce says he feels safer already.
Back at Babs’s House of Guns – where she thanks Selina and Tabitha for returning. Not so fast, though. Tabitha wants her to lose a hand as proof of sincerity.
Both Butch and I lost a hand due to Penguin's machiavellian wargames
(An aside - Um - no? Butch lost a hand as indirect result of Theo and Tabitha's actions in kidnapping Gertrud, Tabitha lost hers because Ed drank stupid juice and thought she and Butch were responsible for Isabella’s death. So – is Tabitha’s explanation the one the show has decided on, then – as a way of explaining Tabitha’s antipathy? If so – that sucks, and relies on the audience apparently having no actual memory).
She has a meat cleaver. Selina shakes her head – but does little else. Barbara puts her hand out, calm. Tabitha brings the cleaver down onto the table. Barbara has passed the test, for now. A dubious looking Selina follows her out, Tabitha saying she’ll start Monday.
Back at GCPD – where Oswald has arrived to see if Jim has managed to arrest Jonathan.
We had a deal, Detective Gordon.
Jim’s not into all this exhibitionism, though – preferring shady deals to be done in dark bars and alleys.
You made a demand in front of your cronies in an attempt to undermine me and the department. No deal.
Oswald is furious. He talks again about GCPD no longer keeping citizens safe, and asks the officers how many of them are sick of risking their lives – or seeing this actual building become a warzone?
He looks right at Jim and says that we must police ourselves. Looking round again, Oswald says he will triple wages if they work for him
The future is now. Follow me.
Jim calls after him that he’s only paying them to look the other way. It…. sort of weirdly fizzled, that scene.
Harvey approaches. Jim tells him not to talk to him – but Harvey says this is a war, not a battle and they need the cops onside. He wants to buy him a drink.
Ivy is in a weird shop, talking to the shopkeeper, whom she’s apparently repeatedly drugged and robbed another one of those terrible men who made her feel stupid.
She’s apparently done with the extremely useful and powerful perfume that made people do her bidding and that Oswald presumably doesn’t remotely value or use at all. She wants ancient mystical potions now to make her badass. She uses the perfume again to get her way, underlining the stupidity of this whole plot point. The shopkeeper pleads with her – telling her that it will mess with her blood and DNA, and is too dangerous is bad to her again and makes her feel stupid.
She takes potions from the safe and starts knocking them back – her face shifting weirdly.
(An aside – this is just…. beyond a mess. The first problem goes way back. Young Ivy was reserved, cynical, suspicious. She didn’t get easily hurt because she had learned not to trust people. She was tight-lipped (making her new tendency to babble stupid and contrived – just a means to create conflict) She was also incredibly careful and intelligent – manufacturing drugs from plants and staying safe is no mean feat. Her current flailing, therefore, is just irritating and out of character. Secondly, Ivy has the means at her disposal to control people and extract a huge amount of cash from them. We saw that she seemed to be doing this for a while. When did she suddenly become useless? And if Oswald was irritating her so much – why not just leave? Or confront him? Or try to resolve it? And that’s not even mentioning that Oswald’s total antipathy for someone who saved his life and offered family is massively not in keeping with anything we know of him, and basically just ooc-ness so they can do whatever the hell they want to do with Ivy now.
In short. No.)
Jim and Harvey are drinking. Harvey says he can understand the cops’ disillusionment. And besides, they’d need an army to tackle Oswald. Harvey then makes the most irrational jump ever and says he misses Falcone – who was a vicious bastard, but had honour. A code. Tell that to Liza, Harve. Falcone ruled with an iron fist, says Harvey.
He then notices the lightbulb above Jim’s head and tried to reverse, but too late. He reminds Jim he killed his son, but the writing is paying no heed to logic this week – and Jim is off to see Falcone who, apparently, has ‘an army’.
Bruce on the rooftops – trying out his new suit and rhapsodizing about it to Alfred via a walkie talkie. Unfortunately, after commenting that it’s incredibly light, he utters the phrase:
Feels like I'm wearing nothing at all
Which only makes me think of
And now the whole scene is lost for me. Stupid sexy Flanders. Alfred tells him to put his proto-Batman mask on, but it still can’t save it.
We finish with him standing on a ledge, looking smug, gazing out over the city. I hope that suit is also ‘sudden-gust-of-wind-proof’
General Observations
Mostly commented above as they happened – but what? There’s so much ooc-ness and hasty plot patching here. So much.
Jim and Oswald.
Ah. Everything here is just so personal. Although it seems that he’s attributed Jim’s actions at the end of last season entirely to the virus (that sharp head turn when Tetch mentioned Jim was infected indicates this) – Oswald is still smarting that Jim didn’t protect him. His repeated assertion that GCPD has failed in protecting its citizens is loaded with personal baggage. It seems – at core – that he still trusts Jim, since he made a beeline for him when dosed with the fear virus: but he’s also still angry, and it’s informing at least some of his actions.
Meantime, we know that Jim – at heart – worries not only that he’s a fraud, but that he is ultimately destructive to anyone he touches. The look he gives Oswald after he comments on the lives he’s ‘wrecked’ has a fair amount of shock in it – like Oswald managed to read his deepest, most personal thoughts.
I would also argue – though I might be wearing shipper glasses – that it’s reminiscent of the look he gives Oswald waaaay back in s2, when he goes to question him about the dead mayoral candidate, and Oswald lashes out to protect Gertrud: there’s some honest surprised hurt there. They might snipe back and forth, but their game has certain unspoken rules. Jim expected Oswald to confide in him – reliant on the fact that they have – however you might describe it – an actual relationship. When Oswald not only refused to confide in Jim, but also lashed out – Jim looks properly startled, a slap in the face from an unexpected person. Likewise here. This isn’t the tit-for-tat at the Iceberg Lounge. This was intensely personal, and Jim didn’t expect Oswald to use it in an argument.
In fact, neither of them are really reasoning much right now. It’s interesting that all of their interactions thus far have been in front of an audience, because they’re both primarily concerned with self-image and saving face.
Jim’s experiences in Gotham have involved frustration at the power of the criminal world, as well as his own deliberate collusion. He’s flouted authority, broken rules, and broken laws. He is planning to go off and make a deal with a mafia don.
But the idea that people should know about this kind of thing is intolerable. He’s going on about how the reputation of the police force must be upheld with two murders under his belt. There’s always been a sense of strain about Jim in terms of how he wants to be seen vs. what he actually believes and does. Oswald’s scheme doesn’t allow for that division, and Jim can’t stand it.
Oswald is obsessed with control, power, and respect. It’s always been a driver for him, apparently from a childhood of severe bullying, and his latest experiences – public humiliation, mental torture and virtual destruction – has only reinforced his thinking that complete control and absolute power are the only ways to be respected and to stay safe.
As such, his whole scheme is all tangled up in that. He tends to think emotionally anyway – but this whole idea is creaking under all his psychological baggage. The press are constantly present because he’s desperately trying to be seen as powerful and successful again after being brought so low.
Jim, Harvey and the Falcone idea
I’m honestly mystified by Jim’s willingness to go along with Harvey’s reasoning. Refusing to dance to Falcone’s tune is pretty much Jim’s big defining moment in the first episode. He’s hugely instrumental in the corruption Jim hates. Jim has since found out that Falcone was hand in glove with the Court of Owls, and that he was involved in his father’s death.
But – Falcone’s suddenly palatable? And what about the practical consideration that, you know – Jim shot his son?
It really doesn’t make a blind bit of sense, and it’s hard to figure out how to understand Jim’s actions (without making recourse to wtf, writers?). Does Falcone still somehow hold some mystique for Jim due to his relationship with his father? Are Jim’s psychological issues around his father’s memory so deep-rooted and overwhelming that he really can’t see clearly, and so Falcone – by dint of association alone – is still an acceptable authority figure?
He definitely doesn’t see Oswald as an authority figure – they’re really more peers, as their current squabbling would indicate.
Because, ultimately, what Falcone offers isn’t really much different from what Oswald is doing. It’s just that Oswald is blatant about it. When Jim arrived, he found a police force riddled with corruption, and the establishment puppeteered by Falcone – who also ran the underworld. This is really roughly the same set-up that Oswald is currently running.
So we’re to understand that Jim’s actually fine with that as long as it’s all at least superficially ‘wrong’? As long as everyone is willing to pay lip service to the notion of a police force that upholds the law and protects citizens, then what actually goes on is OK?
Selina, Tabitha, Ivy and Barbara
Try harder. There’s way too much contrivance going on here. I’m not going to care about it ‘just because’.
The Scarecrow
I thought Jonathan was great – swithering between vulnerability and threat. He’s not too far gone to be reached yet – and I’m keen to see where they go next with him.

Note
I think the best way of handling Robin’s sexuality without it becoming the focus of her character, and without forcing another character in for the romantic plot, further bloating the cast, is such:
Steve and Robin work together. Maybe it’s tacky, maybe it’s callous, but when pretty young women leave the store they casually banter about their looks, their boyfriend, etc
(Low key example:
Robin: I mean, what does she even see in him?? Has he never heard of conditioner?
Steve: I know, right? And hell, you’re like, twice the man he is.
Robin elbows him sharply in the side and while Steve goes ‘oof’ they both give each other sly sideways grins, this game well established between them by this point.)
So we get to see them both building each other up but also still giving each other sass, and we address their mutual appreciation of the ladies. This leads into the other main way to use Robin’s sexuality smartly to inform and grow her character.
It’s pretty much a common theory by this point that Robin and Nancy are going to spend some time together. I don’t want them to fall in love or anything, but a moment here or there where you can kind of see Robin give Nancy a look, just like she’s reevaluating things about the other girl. Conclude this by having Robin and Steve talking nearer to the end of the season where Robin, who previously called Nancy a ‘priss’, admits that she can kind of understand now how Steve got so hung up on this girl. Steve welcomes her to the Heartbroken by Nancy Wheeler Club, of which he is founding member and president for life.
(Low key scene:
Robin: “Really? ‘Heart-broken’?” fond eye roll
Steve looks off into the distance where Nancy is saying a fierce goodbye to Jonathan who is returning back to the Byers’ new home, both of them clutching each other tightly. He smiles wistfully. “It’s better now”
Cut to Nancy and Jonathan realizing Steve is watching them at which point they both welcome him into their embrace because the OT3 is finally real folks! Steve cries because he almost always cries in fanfic and that’s what this is turning into.
End scene)
That is my solution for being inclusive about Robin’s sexuality without making it the focal point of her character or arc, and also reinforces her friendship and understanding with Steve. Maybe the talking about girls after they leave the store is a little gross, but it felt pretty eighties, and like, I think Robin would enjoy the whole snarking about girls aspect, while Steve just has a deep appreciation of the ladies and is more likely to list their positive qualities.
How do you expect the writers to focus on Robin's sexuality in S4? I dont want it to be the sole focus of her storyline but i still think it should be touched upon. And whatever should/could be done, do you expect the Duffers to gandle it properly?
Dude, I have no idea. The fact that her sexuality seems to have only come about from Maya Hawke and Joe Keery sitting the Duffers down and mildly insisting complicates it further since whatever was originally planned for Robin for S4 was as Steve’s girlfriend- a role which (and I know it’s just considered the ‘default setting’ by writers and all so they probably wouldn’t see it the same way) would presumably bring up her heterosexuality quite often. So it would be incredibly shitty to dust their hands off like, ‘Well, the audience all know she’s a lesbian now, never have to mention it or anything like it again- this isn’t a show about romance guys, its about monster fighting lets go!’.
On the other hand them latching onto the fact that it was (as far as I can tell?) an extremely popular move and produced one of the most universally lauded scenes from the entire season (even among cranky bastards like myself) and making it -as you said- the sole focus of her character would be equally shitty and reductive.
.That said, while I’m sort of uncertain an wary about the logistics of adding a full on new love interest and romance arc in a way that would be fulfilling in the middle of inevitable monsters and maybe Brenner and definitely... *sigh*.... fighting Russians and rescuing Hopper from a Siberian gulag- I don’t NOT trust the writers. I still really like the show, even if the 3rd Season was very much not my thing and I can go off about characterization a bit, but I think once you get to a point where you just assume anything the writers do is going to be the wrong thing and suck it’s probably time to watch something else. I love the character and really hope they’ll find a good balance.
Thanks for the ask Anon! I’ve really been wondering this myself.

Best Romantic Moon Sign Matches; ARIES MOON, LEO MOON
❤️ Sagittarius Moon (♐︎☽) + Aries Moon (♈︎☽):
Sagittarius Moon and Aries Moon get along perfectly well. They both like adventures and excitement. They are both full of enthusiasm and energy. Emotionally, these two are very compatible. Freedom is important to both of them. They will be a playful, stimulating pair. Both Sagittarius and Aries are rather blunt. They make a pairing that is optimistic, courageous and invigorating. Neediness and dependency makes both of them very uncomfortable. They prefer to be spontaneous when they get emotional. Their differences will show in how they react to emotion. Sagittarius prefers to use their intellect to understand their feelings. They like to file things away in mental boxes as being either positive or negative. Aries, on the other hand, may get tired of being told how they should feel at any given time. Luckily, Sagittarius' sense of humor often rescues the situation. On the good side, because of the high level of compatibility between Aries Moon and Sagittarius Moon, they respect each other and their needs. They are honest with each other and have no need to be manipulative. These two will be able to make a relationship work very well with little effort.
❤️ Sagittarius Moon (♐︎☽) + Leo Moon (♌︎☽):
Sagittarius Moon and Leo Moon make a happy couple. They have a great amount of understanding on how the other one ticks. Friendly, generous and optimistic, these two play very well together. They will have a great time going out together, playing games, and living free. Leo Moon is very loyal, and they want to know that they have Sagittarius' full attention. They also need to feel appreciated to be happy. Sagittarius Moon needs to feel the winds of freedom, both emotionally and at home. They may be rather tactless, which may hurt Leo's pride. Leo takes everything very personally. If they can overcome these small issues, they can have a very fulfilling life together. They may be very lucky when they are together, and they will prosper almost effortlessly in the eyes of others. These two are great fun to be around. They suit each other to a T the majority of the time. You may find them traveling the world, clubbing, and enjoying all manners of sport. Enterprising and cheerful, these two will certainly light up any room they walk into.

Born with the Moon in Sagittarius, you are likely to be innately optimistic, expansive and positive in your point of view. Sagittarius is a Fire sign, and so accentuates the passionate, idealistic and creative dimensions of life. Sagittarius is also mutable in action, which means you are likely to have an innate need for variety and change. When passion and variety combine, there is often a deep calling for freedom. Because the Moon describes your natural response to things, or where you feel at home, you are likely to feel most comfortable roaming free – exploring your world and expanding horizons wherever possible. This expansion can happen in numerous ways. On the one hand, this lunar position implies a love of travel, and fascination with foreign places. You may be something of a “gypsy” at heart, with a powerful longing to explore the world and move around. You may find you travel a lot, or seek work and situations that allow you contact with foreign places and cultures. Even if circumstances do not allow, you are likely to wish that they would, and can easily imagine yourself making your home anywhere in the world. Dreaming of far-off places helps you engage with your need to be free. Anything that brings you contact with exotic people and situations will warm your heart. You would rather dine at a distant Mongolian restaurant than spend yet another Friday night at the local bistro. Feeling free to experience other cultures satisfies deep emotional needs. This urge for freedom is very strong, and can make you restless at times. You dislike the feeling of being stuck in any place for too long, and will need variety with your environment. You may decorate your home in an eclectic way, or surround yourself with objects that remind you of places you would like to be. When life becomes too routine, it can easily seem lifeless and dull. Therefore, it is important that you freshen up your perspective from time to time by getting out to places that you have not been before. Another way for you to broaden horizons is through study or learning. This sign relates to the search for truth, and ultimately pursuit of wisdom. You are likely to find you have a need to feel that you are always learning or discovering something new. You may be an eternal student, or spend much of your time with recreational pursuits that have an educational bent as well. You can feel that your world is expanding through the knowledge that you acquire, and even if this just means you are a student of life, you are likely to find that knowledge opens your horizons and helps you feel free. Sagittarius is also the sign of the teacher, as well as the preacher. The need to seek truth and wisdom can also translate into a love of sharing that with others. You may have natural gifts for inspiring others to be the best that they can be. You may be very good at explaining different points of view, and may find that others are drawn to you for the breadth of experience you can share. Your greatest gift is your ability to give others the same freedom you require to find your own truth. When you let them explore different ideas and work out what is true for them, you allow them to expand their awareness. You are likely to make a good teacher, trainer or mentor based on your ability to inspire and educate. On the flip side, you may also tend to become so consumed with what you believe to be true that you end of preaching to others in order to convert them to your point of view. You may need to consider whether you have a need to be right, and a tendency to broadcast your belief systems as if they were the only possible option for others to choose. Because this placement implies a strong attachment to the search for truth, there may be a tendency toward believing that what you have discovered as true for yourself should be the truth for everyone else. And so, you may have a tendency toward being bombastic that should be kept in check. When pushed by an emotional undercurrent, you may “share” from a biased point of view, based on trying to prove your version of “reality” and bring others to agree with your point of view. Recognizing that there are many paths which can lead to the same centre is useful, and necessary when agitated by the circumstances that surround you. That said, you are much more likely to be optimistic, positive and sunny in your disposition, with a tendency to live and let live. Sagittarius is a sign of broad-mindedness and you are likely to possess a philosophical approach to life. As a rule, Sagittarian types are more concerned with the big picture than with attention to detail, and unless other factors are present, you may need to watch out for any tendency to brush over the fine print, and get yourself into trouble through an over-reliance on faith as opposed to reason. All in all however, your happy and optimistic disposition should be one of your greatest assets, and help you to rise time and again from any of life’s setbacks. Finally you may also seek to broaden horizons through testing the limits of life itself. Sagittarius is associated with a love of challenge. Virgo Moon may become annoyed with the lackadaisical way that Taurus Moon leaves things all over the house. Overall, however, this is a happy and content pairing. They meet each others’ needs for intimacy and pleasant company. They will be most content in the country or if they are able to grow a garden or at least go camping frequently. They have a need to interact with nature in some way. This pairing should do very well with minimal effort.

With the Moon in the practical and systematic sign of Virgo, you are likely to be someone who is highly appreciative of structure, organization and detail. You will find your life works better with well-established systems in your personal and professional life. Virgo is an Earth sign, and so pertains to tangible or physical things. It is also known as a Mutable sign, which infers a need for variety and change. When practicality and change are brought together, the principle of refinement is found. Born with the Moon in Virgo, you are likely to have an innate need to improve or refine the circumstances around you – combining practical know-how with the analytical quality necessary to achieve specific results. Virgo is a sign of service. You are likely to find you have an innate need to nurture yourself and others through offering practical service in everyday ways. Virgo is also a sign of humility. You may be quite happy working behind the scenes, adding your considerable talent for organization to whatever you are involved in and happy to be of service, often asking nothing in return. The satisfaction of a job well-conceived, well-planned and well-done often provides the result you need. You should take care, however, not to allow this natural instinct for service to be manipulated, or taken advantage of by others. Ancient astrologers saw a relationship between the sign of Virgo and the condition of slavery. It is important that your need to be useful does not turn into the need to be someone else’s “pack-horse”. The Moon refers to how we need to be nurtured. You will find a tendency to feel safe or secure through knowing that things are tidy, structured and planned. Routine is your friend, and establishing well-ordered routines in your daily life will help you think more clearly. Virgo is associated with process and purification at both material and mental levels. You are likely to be emotionally affected by how well your daily systems are functioning and how ‘pure’ life conditions are. At a simple level, you are likely to feel awkward and uncomfortable in chaotic environments. You will feel more serene and so focussed in an organized space. At a more subtle level, you can be emotionally affected by food additives, pollutants and synthetics in your environment. This is not to say that you are ‘precious’ or need to be wrapped in cotton wool. It is just that you will feel impurities more acutelythan others. Above all else, you need a calm, peaceful and well ordered environment to access your astute thinking processes. You are nurtured by organization and structure. You assimilate information better when processes are clear, and sources of nourishment relatively clean. This is a sign of mental discrimination. You may have innate talents for editing or discernment, able to describe other people’s traits, dispositions and downfalls. Thus you may have strong writing abilities, or work well in fields involving communication, personal service and customer relations. You are likely to have a keen mind, and a great eye for detail. This can be turned to its’ full advantage by seeking occupations that allow you to capitalize on your ability to spot the ‘bottom line’. You are likely to be very good at extracting the essence from something otherwise complicated. You have the ability to sort the wheat from the chaff, and find what is essential in a sentence, task list or schedule. Because of your strong analytical ability, you may need to make sure that you watch your tendency to be overly critical, finding fault with yourself and others rather than working toward improving whatever situation you are in. Your capacity for analysis is great for problem-solving, but can also be your downfall. You are likely to be highly adaptable, but also prone to excessive worry. You can easily fall victim to nervous tension by constantly finding faults or remaining in chaotic environments that go against your instinctual needs. It is important that you learn to take time out when needed, and find ways to remedy the effects of too much nervous tension. Meditation, yoga, martial arts and other forms of mind-body exercise can be especially beneficial. This will greatly assist you to stay focussed and calm.Often, those with the Moon here can be quietly critical of self and others. Your tendency to criticize your own efforts may make it difficult for you to see your own true worth. You may underestimate your contributions and be innately convinced that whatever you do, it is not good enough. This can be a humble and shy position for the Moon. Unless other factors in your chart offer more outgoing tendencies, you may fail to receive credit for all that you have achieved. It is important that you learn to recognize how useful you are. Next time you are concerned that you have not ‘done enough’ simply ask yourself if you have improved the situation you are in. Rather than striving to be perfect, you will find that striving to make things better satisfies your need to be useful, and helps you take unrealistic expectations off yourself. On another level, Virgo is associated with the body and health. Thus, you may have an instinctual interest in matters of health, diet and nutrition. You may be naturally quite healthy simply because you have an interest in your own wellbeing, and notice that life flows better for you with regular exercise and good eating habits. It is very important that you to pay close attention to what you do, and do not, eat. Often, those with the Moon here have very delicate digestive and nervous systems. You are likely to find that you may have trouble with your stomach or nerves if you lose touch with your own bodily needs. Excess worry or problems with digestion may plague you if you do not pay attention to what you ingest. Taking in pure food (as well as experiences) is a very practical thing for you. You can be adversely affected by processed foods, and overcome with anxiety if exposed to harsh or critical people. Making sure you improve the systems that regulate your own personal life is essential for you. Through good food, routine and regular exercise you can enjoy extraordinarily good health This interest in health is often quite strong. You may have natural abilities in any area to do withhealth, nutrition and healing, especially in the area of natural therapies, herbs and pharmacology. Often those with the Moon here are drawn to service roles such as nursing and community work. Finding ways to be useful is important. Any activity that lets you combine your innate practicality, fine mind, and willingness to help can work well for you, leading to beneficial outcomes for all concerned. Individuals with the moon in Virgo are usually simple in nature and prefer to live a quiet life without the glare of public eye. They look for small things in their life to seek happiness and contentment. It is the small and insignificant matters in life like plucking flowers from a garden that give them real happiness. It is in their basic nature to not only take care of themselves, but to take care of others as well. Thus, such individuals are of extremely helpful nature and will be first to lend a helping hand to those in distress. These individuals love to have a routine in their life. They cannot do without a routine and if it is missing in their lives, they tend to feel that something is amiss in their life and they are not in their true elements due to it. They tend to act in a fussy manner and are often labelled as complainers as they cannot function properly without having a routine in their life. Due to such characteristics, they love to take on such jobs or tasks in which lot of detailing is required or which has a great scope for micromanagement of things and situations. Such individuals are always averse to public displays of affection and most of the times get repulsed because of that. Such individuals tend to be shy in meeting up new people. However, once they get to know them and gradually open up, they are in their own elements and strike a good rapport with them. Additionally, they are born sceptics in nature and tend to be over critical of themselves as well.

Born with the Moon in Capricorn, you are likely to be innately responsible, pragmatic and measured in the ways that you respond. Capricorn is an Earth sign, and so pertains to the tangible and practical dimensions of life. It is also known as a Cardinal sign, which implies a need to take action. When practicality and activity combine, the urge to master material resources is usually present. With the Moon in Capricorn, you are likely to have an innately serious and responsible nature, seeking to make the most of whatever resources you have at your disposal. Responsibility, and all this entails, will probably form a background theme in your life. You may have had to step into a position of responsibility early in life, or received strong impressions from your parents (most usually mother) about the need to live up to certain expectations in life. You may feel a deep sense of duty around supporting others, and will naturally be drawn to areas of life expression which allow you to demonstrate a capacity to accept responsibility. You are likely to have the ability to assist and nurture others in practical ways, and will often be seen as “the capable one” who can be relied on to find realistic solutions to current problems. The Moon is said to be in “detriment” in this sign, implying that easy and spontaneous emotional connections are not your forte. You are likely to be self-conscious in your emotional approach, and may appear reserved at first, taking time to warm to others and develop closeness. While you may have a huge heart, you do not give it away easily. You need time to get to know others and work out how you really feel about them. It is important to understand how serious or worthwhile any emotional involvement may be before you get involved. Whilst to others this may seem calculating, for you it is just a realistic assessment of the fact that emotional ties can be burdensome, and taking yourself seriously involves assessing exactly where a situation is taking you, and if that is where you want to be. Yet this pragmatism can also be a source of strength. It can give you stability and create a realistic attitude to life’s emotional ebbs and flows. On the up side, this means that for those you hold near and dear, you will be consistent, strong and true. You have an innate ability to follow through on what you say, and are likely to value greatly the worth of family, continuity and emotional commitment. On the down side however, your pragmatic approach to feelings and relationships may lead to a tendency for projecting to others a cold and unavailable nature, concerned more with the bottom line of what you will ‘get’ from a connection, rather than just being able to enjoy closeness and intimacy for what it is. The sign of Capricorn relates to foundations, structures and the gift of Time. You are likely to value tradition, status, and social position. You will require from others the same level of responsibility and capacity that you demonstrate for yourself, and will respect people or situations that demonstrate longevity and persistence. On some level, you are likely to feel most secure when you have solid structures and foundations around you. To this end you may be somewhat conservative, with strong ambitions for yourself based on recognition and accomplishment. Achievements carry powerful emotional overtones for you, and you are likely to feel an inward need to live up to being the best that you can be. You may have a need to prove yourself ‘out there’ in the world as a concrete example of your inner values, so reflecting an aptitude for responsibility and commitment. Alternately, you may have a much more private idea of what success and accomplishment mean to you. You may be less concerned with worldly success and more concerned with doing the best you can on a more personal level. You may set high standards for personal development, with a profound sense of integrity and authenticity. Whether your focus is material or spiritual, you are likely to be committed to making sure that you achieve the things that you expect of yourself. If other features of your chart imply more freedom-loving or unconventional qualities, you may be at odds with other voices within your psyche. If you find yourself struggling between the need to fulfill obligations and the need to be free just remember that your innate capacity to commit and demonstrate responsibility can be expressed in many different ways. As long as you live up to your own expectations in terms of what responsibility means to you, you will feel emotionally stable and secure. From this stable base, you can spin off into any form of expression you so choose. You are likely to be highly self-sufficient and contained, but need to remember that sometimes we build strong emotional foundations by sharing our strengths and weaknesses, talents short-comings and abilities with those around us. You are no doubt very capable, but need to be mindful of a tendency to isolate yourself upon your own mountaintop of duty and responsibility. You may have an innate tendency to expect that no one else will be as thorough as you are, and so take on far more than you need to, at times even taking from others duties that are rightfully theirs. Try not to look down upon “mere mortals’ less capable than you, but realize that your strengths and capabilities have been earned through hard work and sacrifice, yet only count for something if you can share them with someone else. In sharing responsibilities, you will achieve the position of respect and responsibility that you so naturally deserve. In letting others demonstrate capability and endurance, you help build a fertile platform upon which material stability is achievedWith the Moon placed here, you are likely to be innately concerned with how you appear publicly. You tend to be aware of the value of reputation and protocol, and so, will avoid doing anything publicly that may diminish you in the eyes of others. Because you recognize the value of a good reputation, you will strive to appear capable, contained and in-charge. Whilst this is useful in terms of earning respect, it may mean that you avoid extending yourself at times because you will not let yourself learn. You can set such high standards of achievement for yourself that you expect to be able to master whatever you attempt almost as soon as you begin. Rather than learning through a process of trial and error, you will stop yourself doing things unless you are already innately competent. It is important that you recognize the need for learning or apprenticeship along the road to mastery. Showing others your vulnerabilities will not hurt you as much as you may fear, and can in fact help them appreciate your achievements more through seeing your commitment to high standards through hard work. Finally, there may also be a need to release old, crystallized emotional patterns or unconscious fears through subconscious re-programming. Because the Moon represents the genetic or emotional framework through which we view experiences and learn about the world, there may be a tendency to ‘get stuck’ when that frame is inclined to endure and ‘hold-on’. In this sense, unconscious fears, limitations and restrictions may prevent you from opening up to an easy, spontaneous flow of emotion. Old habits and memories can prevent you from connecting with the here and now. There may be inhibitions around revealing the true extent of your feelings, and you may keep others at a distance so they never know how much you really need them. Developing empathy, the ability to self-nurture and kindness for yourself are highly recommended, This will help dissolve any old and unwanted emotional patterns, and open the door for greater vulnerability and closeness with others. You may find tactile or emotional therapies useful for you if find this hard to achieve. Because you are used to demonstrating fortitude and resilience, you may find it hard to soften and let others in. But when you share your capacity to accept responsibility and build solid foundations in life, you are rewarded with full appreciation from those who can understand the depth of your emotional commitment.

Born with the Moon in the lively, communication-oriented sign of Gemini, you are likely to be a curious individual, with an active, versatile mind. Gemini is an Air sign, governing communication, the exchange of information or ideas, and the protocols with which social organization occurs. Accordingly, you may find that you have an innate need to know as much as possible about the world around you, and may have a talent for numbers, speech or the written word. Gemini is also a Mutable sign, implying the need for variety and change. You are likely to find that you are easily engaged in new things, seek stimulation and may become easily bored. You are likely to be very adaptable, and love anything new. You may be an instinctive multi-tasker, and may habitually involve yourself in many tasks at the same time. Your need for variety means you are better when doing several things at once, but need to avoid scattering your mental energies so that very little actually gets done. The essence of this sign is communication. Unless other factors in your birth chart dominate, you are likely to enjoy sharing information with others, and may be very talkative. You may find yourself involved with lots of different people, flitting from group to group, situation to situation, in order to exchange information and ideas. Information is the foundation of your emotional wellbeing. You are likely to feel at your best when actively engaged in learning something new. For you, information is paramount, and you may not need to study something in depth to feel that you know enough about it. As long as you have glimpsed the basis of an idea or opinion, you may then feel satisfied to move on. Like the literal social butterfly, you may find yourself moving from person to person, gathering data, ideas information or facts before moving on to share what you have gained. You need to know about what is going on around you, and will enjoy imparting to others the information they may need to get through the day. Sometimes, this love of information can extend to gossip. You may have a weakness for scandals, trivia and trashy magazines! You like to know what is happening in other peoples lives. This works well for you when your love of knowledge stimulates good conversation and an interest in the world around you. When taken to extremes, a love of gossip can work against you. You may find that you inadvertently develop a reputation for being fickle, two-faced or unreliable. Others may know you cannot be trusted to keep a secret, and so will exclude you from the true details of their personal lives. Or you may attract to yourself persons who thrive on discussing the misfortunes of others. This can create a negative backlash that will ultimately bring you undone. Discretion is an important trait to develop when born with the Moon in this sign. Because you are interested in everything does not mean you have the right to spread it around! This is a very inquisitive position for the Moon. In many ways, you experience a sense of personal worth by connecting to other people, talking to them about their problems and concerns, and finding out what makes them tick. You are less likely to be concerned with deep emotional intricacies as you are with the peculiarities of their life circumstances or perspectives. Once you have ascertained where someone is coming from and why, you are likely to then feel compelled to move on to someone else, having satisfied your need to exchange information, so entering another “data file” into your catalogue of human experiences. Your interest in others is indeed genuine. You may just find you have an almost unquenchable need to know more. In essence, you will need to find a balance between your need for information, and your ability to connect with others on more than superficial terms. As the Moon is also concerned with nurturing, you may have a special ability to make others feel good with what you say. Because you know how to nurture with words, you may know the right thing to say at just the right moment to get others feeling light and bright again. Gemini is a sign known for humour and entertainment. You may instinctively know how to keep things fun. Talking around the surface of things stop them getting heavy. You are likely to have an uncanny ability to turn the conversation around when needed to the brighter side of life. You are probably very good at defining emotions. You have the ability to categorize experiences based on objective fact, but may be less comfortable actually feeling what is happening. In this sense, you may attempt to avoid deep emotional experiences, feeling more certain of yourself with rational or logical discussion where you can analyze a certain situation, classify it, and move on. In time, you will need to learn to deepen your emotional experiences, so that you can learn why certain emotions occur. Rather than detaching from emotional involvement, you may find that experiencing emotion, then adding logic, helps broaden your social repertoire. As the Moon rules the instincts, you may have instinctual talents with words and numbers. You may be good at keeping score, at accounting, or any form of commerce. You may also have a love for trade, enjoying the hustle and bustle that goes along with bartering and retail. You may have a love of gadgets, and be drawn to anything bright, shiny and new. You may be an instinctive flirt, and love flitting from one admirer to the next. This Moon position is often associated with those whose main concern is with the external world, exchanging facts, ideas and commodities without getting too consumed by the deeper, or more mysterious, dimensions of life. This is fine, as long as it does not preclude you from acknowledging that you are also an emotional being, with passionate needs that also need expression. Then your love of logic can be balanced with a well-rounded interpersonal life. At its best, Gemini is a lively and versatile sign. Born with the Moon here, you are likely to have a quick and adaptable mind. Your interest in whatever is happening around you means that you will feel an ever-present need to “know”. Once you have discovered something, you will want to share it with those around. Upon this foundation, your need for communication grows. Emotional balance comes from being connected to your immediate environment and having other people in your life. The need for variety and change is usually strong here, and you will seek multiple experiences and projects to keep you on the go. Your curiosity can be both an endless source of discovery and a good deal of personal charm. Connected with others, you can share what you have learned. Moving from situation to situation generates feelings of newness and excitement that will always give you something interesting to talk about.

When the Moon is found in Pisces, the emotions are likely to be pronounced. Pisces is the final sign of The Zodiac, and has much to do with sensitivity – to oneself, to other people, and to the mysterious, unseen forces that shape our world. With the Moon in Pisces, you are likely to be a highly impressionable individual – strongly influenced by the compassionate, creative, imaginative, romantic and idealistic aspects of life.On an instinctive level, you may have a natural affinity for the abstract or intuitive. This affinity can be a blessing, or a curse. You are likely to be able to sense the hidden or energetic levels of life, soaking up atmospheres as if you were a sponge. Your feelings about people and situations are likely to be immediate, accurate and intense. Understanding that your feelings provide valuable information, but can lead you astray sometimes, means that you will need to learn to recognize the difference between an intuitive response to something, and an emotional reaction that is based on your response to whatever is going on. Your imagination is likely to be very strong. You can find all manner of nuance in many life experiences. You are likely to respond to all manner of visual and emotional stimuli, which work to jettison you off into the many worlds of your imagination. Here you can find recreation and release. Whether you prefer to escape into a comfortable world of your own daydreams, or immerse yourself in art, anything that works to activate your imagination feels like coming home, and enables you to nurture your soul. This is a great advantage if you turn your talents to anything creative. Most often, the Piscean energy is expressed through abstract art forms, so anything around music, film, photography, dance, drama, poetry or painting may appeal. Even if you do not practice as an artist, you are likely to be strongly in tune with certain art-forms. Because this sign is highly creative, opportunity awaits those of you who find an outlet for your vivid imaginations. You may also be highly intuitive, possessing innate psychic abilities if other factors in the chart are also present. You may have had a powerful sense of knowing from an early age, experienced prophetic dreams, or perhaps grown up in an environment where the women in particular were known for their psychic or healing abilities. Understanding how your “sixth sense” operates is your natural birthright, and one you can readily develop if you give it the time and respect it deserves.Pisces is a sign of mystery, and humanity is not yet at a stage of evolution to understand all that Life has to offer. We do not understand our intuition fully, nor do we understand all the dimensions which exist within our Universe. Accordingly, you may have a natural curiousity about the subtle forces which shape our lives which is beyond what other people understand. Your instinctive awareness that there is more than just the “Here and Now” gives you an innate acceptance of things which cannot be immediately explained. This sign is one of spiritual seeking. You may have a profound and personal relationship with your own experience of The Divine. This does not mean you are religious, and you may not follow any particular faith. But you are likely to feel in touch with something greater than yourself, and in your own way seek to live that experience out. As mentioned, Pisces is a sign of great sensitivity. Your life will be directed by feeling, and by the sense perhaps of an unseen “Hand” guiding it all. Love and relationship may be an area of life where you go through many lessons. Pisces is a very romantic sign. You may have a tendency to enter relationships or new experiences with rose-coloured glasses. Putting others on a pedestal means that invariably they must “fall off”. Yet you have the capacity for a rare kind of loving, based on the unconditional acceptance of others for who they are. Sometimes you experience an exalted kind of love that will bring you an experience of true union with another. At other times, you may need to wake up to harsh realities, seeing others for who they are, and not who you would like them to be. With the Moon here you need to be in relationship with others who respect your sensitivity. For this to happen, you must first respect it in yourself. Most often, women with the Moon in Pisces have an easier time, for women are allowed to explore and develop their sensitive sides. For men, this placement can be more difficult. Many men are taught from an early age to repress their emotional lives, leading to patterns of fear and self-denial in later life where the attempt to shut down and deny their intuitive side. Sometimes men born with the Moon in Pisces fear their natural sensitivities. They react badly to the idea of anything ‘otherwordly’, as this would mean opening up to parts of themselves that have long been locked away. The sign of Pisces carries within it an innate urge to escape – to leave behind the mundane aspects of life. Accordingly, you may find you have the need to withdraw periodically from the demands of life, taking time to replenish your highly sensitive emotional system. If you do not recognize when the time to withdraw has come, you may find yourself unable to cope with the demands of life. Withdrawal or escape is an important part of the Piscean experience. Whether you do this consciously or unconsciously will be entirely up to you.A conscious manifestation of this desire to escape could involve taking time to be alone, retreating from the world for contemplation, meditation, purification and renewal. Spending time by the water, or in nature, is especially soothing. Natural environments help release the emotional and psychological influences you have absorbed from others, and process those experiences that are necessary for your growth. As Pisces is a sign of compassion, you may also experience self-renewal through acts of kindness to others, consciously offering your compassionate nature in selfless acts of service to others. The trick here will be in learning not to take on more than your fair share. Giving of your self is a natural response, but you may need to learn when enough is enough. Sometimes those born with the Moon in Pisces need to recognize boundaries, so that their generous and compassionate qualities are not taken advantage of. An unconscious manifestation of the urge to escape would be more literal. This is usually characterized by a person who seeks to escape from the demands of this world through addiction, drugs or alcohol, through becoming dependent on some kind of government or welfare system, or losing themselves by becoming the victim of someone or something. Sometimes those born with the Moon in Pisces unconsciously become sick, vulnerable or destitute. However the escape is experienced, there is often an underlying feeling of not being able to cope in the world. However it manifests, the urge to escape is almost always about seeking purification, restoration and release on an emotional level. Becoming conscious of underlying motives and needs will help greatly in understanding the complexities of such a sensitive emotional nature. Recognizing that the need to escape embodies a desire to merge oneself back with the source of “All That Is” can help set up constructive paths to become involved in life again, through which a return to consciousness can occur. Born with the Moon in Pisces, you are likely to have an innate need to find outlets for your acute sensitivity. You are likely to be drawn to the romantic, creative, compassionate, service-oriented or spiritual dimensions of life. Your natural ability to sense what is really going on is your best asset but possibly your greatest stumbling block. By learning to respect your own nature, you see clearly the people and situations that will give you the respect that you deserve. Yours is a loving heart, looking for union with another. In Love you will discover your biggest reward, and the most worthy reason to sacrifice.

Born with the Moon in Cancer, you are likely to have an innate need to nurture, support and protect. Cancer is a Water sign, and so, pertains to the emotional, psychological and spiritual dimensions of life. Your empathy for others is likely to be strong, and you will have an intuitive ability to sense what others need. Cancer is also a Cardinal sign, and so is concerned with taking action somehow. You are likely to feel a sense of responsibility that will impel you to take action where others wellbeing is concerned. This is a sign of emotional support; of deep connection to family, home, and togetherness. A sense of emotional wellbeing comes from the family and home connections that you create in your life. The Moon rules Cancer, so is in its’ own sign. This will amplify the lunar qualities of emotion, empathy and intuition. You are likely to be strongly driven by emotion, influenced by your own ever-changing moods, as well as the moods of those around you. As the Moon is cyclic in nature, waxing and waning as it orbits the Earth, you too are likely to be a cyclical being. You are more influenced by your own inner cycles and instincts than logic or routine. You can use this sensitivity to great advantage if you learn to recognize your internal rhythms. Then you will know what you need in each moment, and will naturally follow your own inner path. Moon in Cancer people often do best when they can keep to their own schedules. The ebb and flow of emotion will affect their vitality, and so the kinds of activity that suit them from day to day. You are likely to be influenced by the moods and feelings of those around you, and can be deeply affected by whatever environment you are in. It is very important for those born with the Moon here learn to take responsibility for how sensitive and emotional they are. Otherwise, you may find yourself constantly tossed around in the sea of life, soaking up other peoples emotional and psychic states with little awareness of what is happening to you and why. For emotional balance, you need to recognize the difference between what is yours and not yours. Taking on the moods of others can distract you from your own best path. You may be unable to discern between your own feelings, and attitudes, and those of the people around you, for you are extremely impressionable, and likely to be instinctively responding to how others around you feel. This is useful when it comes to nurturing and supporting. You have an almost psychic sense of what they need and when! But for your own well-being, it can be problematic if you are constantly invested in others’ needs, with little conscious awareness, of what you need yourself! Ask yourself honestly if you know what your needs are? Can you define them? Do they depend upon the relative stance of other people? Are your true needs being met? You are advised to take good care of this highly sophisticated emotional mechanism by making sure you stay centered and grounded. This can be achieved in many ways, including spending time alone in nature or by the water when you feel the need. Meditation and retreat will work wonders for you. Learning to invigorate your emotional self will be one of the smartest skills you learn in life. Your instincts are actually your best friend, and will serve you very well once you have learned to decipher between what is yours, and what is not. You must remember how readily inclined you are to soak up the atmosphere of what is going on around you, and so, stay somehow separated when involved in circumstances where it would be best for you to stay detached. This is difficult, but can be achieved through practice, and using mental imagery to affirm that you are protected and contained. Visualizing a calm and protective white or pale blue bubble around you can be very helpful. The yogic practice of pranayama (controlled breathing) is another excellent tool for keeping your psychic field clear and contained. The Moon in Cancer can be very traditional. Matters to do with home and family life tend to feature strongly. For some, there will be an overarching concern for all things concerning family life. Having your family around you will be important and you are likely to feel very responsible for your family’s wellbeing. For others, especially if the Moon is aspected by other, more independent planets, you will still be affected by family life, but may find part of your journey involves the continual struggle to emerge from the “familial soup” so to speak, and become your own person. You may have to leave behind your family of origin to find your family of choice. You may have constant change with the people in your life, but notice you somehow feel at your best when there is someone there for you to take care of. A sense of belonging comes from maintaining emotional ties. You will willingly take on the responsibility of caring for others – this a natural place for you to be. Accordingly, this is a very maternal/paternal position for The Moon, lending strong nurturing capacities. Your relationship with your own mother is likely to be especially significant, and you may have a close symbiotic bond. Sometimes, the need to nurture can be so strong that you tend to over nurture, or smother, those you care about. With the Moon here, you may have to learn to let family members live their lives in their own way. You may have to let go of the habit of becoming overly invested in your family members’ lives. On a basic level, you need to give support and nurture to those around you, without jeopardizing their independence, as well as your own. Sometime the best way to protect others is to teach them what it means to go out into the world and achieve results. Like a mother hen, you may have to let go of the urge to keep your “chick” close beneath your wings. You nurture others best when you are not attempting to over-protect them from what may be, in the end, your own worst fears. On the down side, this Moon position can also be associated with a tendency to attract persons who are so emotionally needy that the Cancer Moon person finds themselves constantly in a position of taking care of the other whilst secretly resenting the fact that their own need for nurturing and support is not being met. This unconsciously becomes the perfect “hook” for the Cancer Moon individual to become absorbed in taking care of the other’s needs, whilst failing to get their own needs met in return. Often, Cancer Moon folk find themselves in codependent situations as they attract needy people, requiring constant support and attention. Your need to nurture means you get confused around where your true responsibilities lie. This will reflect the basic premise that you are more aware of others needs than you are of your own, and so will take action for them before you will do it for yourself. Withdrawing from relationships where you play “parent” is important and will allow you to attract into your life an equal who will recognize and meet your needs in return. Ultimately, you must learn about the sensitivity and subtle, unconscious patterns inherent in this Moon position. You need to understand your emotional self without being overwhelmed by its’ demands. This can be achieved by actively seeking to nurture others whilst maintaining appropriate boundaries, by recognizing your need to be close and protective, and then asking yourself if your needs can be met. Setting up relationships where you end up being disappointed just perpetuates misplaced feelings of guilt and responsibility. You need to surround yourself with people who recognize your nurturing qualities, and can give you the same in return. On another level, Cancer relates to the domestic side of life. Your home is likely to be very important to you, and in many ways your castle as well as retreat from the world. Your home should be as calm and serene as possible. You are probably naturally attuned to home decorating, and know how to make it both comfortable and inviting. This is the sign of hospitality, and you may be a great cook, or drawn to any activity where you can take care of others needs. Bringing people into your home is a great way for you to show them that you love them. Whilst you may be emotionally sensitive in environments not familiar to you, you can be at your best when home. Every effort should be made to make your home exactly as you want it. You may change homes continually in your life, but what should remain constant is the sense of peace that comes over you when you walk through the front door. Born with the Moon in Cancer, you are likely to have a highly developed intuitive and emotional side. You are likely to have a strong empathy for others, and will feel impelled to take action in order to nurture, support and protect them. Your uncanny sense of what others need gives you the ability to stay one step ahead. You recognise the unspoken opportunity present in many situations, and can act in ways that give others what they need. This sensitivity can be also be used for your own benefit. Recognizing your own rhythms or tides means you know exactly what you need and when. Learning to acknowledge your own needs is important, and may take time. It is easier for you to sense where others are coming from than it yourself. But once this skill is learned, there is little to hold you back. Born with the Moon in Cancer, you are a natural homemaker, family person and friend. With your heightened sensitivity, you connect easily with others, and get great joy from seeing them thrive.

Herm Schneider to retire as trainer after 40 seasons
Below, we’re going to basically reprint a gussied-up version of the press release the Chicago White Sox sent out this afternoon, announcing the retirement of longtime trainer, Herm Schneider. It’s very well written and drafted with enormous care, which tells you how important Herm is to the White Sox organization.
Before that, let me chime in on how fabulous Herm Schneider is. On the beat, there was rarely the need for contact with Herm, at least for publication. When, for example, Jake Peavy was undergoing his surgeries and rehabs, setbacks and all, it was a White Sox media relations rep who would hold a brief Q&A; Herm was busy working on somebody, somewhere, trying to get that night’s White Sox roster in top shape.
Yet Herm was always one of the most fun people in the White Sox dugout to hang with. He took the time to learn your name, and say hello. During rain delays, or some of the voluminous pregame dead air, or just at whatever time seemed fit, Herm would be good to chill. We shot the breeze, just hanging out at the top dugout step watching BP or infield, many times. Shared a few meals, and a few laughs.
One thing, among all those nice memories of a guy otherwise somewhat anonymous to fans: He is as humble a guy as you can imagine. Whenever reference was made to some terrific rehab job he did, or his (pretty much universally-affirmed) status as the very best in the business, he just smiled and waved it off. So, so genuine.
As you’ll read below, Herm is beyond beloved in the White Sox organization. As Robin Ventura says, Herm is “the fabric of the White Sox organization.”
He is truly irreplaceable.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Monday, December 3, 2018
HERM SCHNEIDER TO BECOME HEAD ATHLETIC TRAINER EMERITUS IN 2019 AFTER 40 SEASONS WITH THE WHITE SOX
CHICAGO – Herm Schneider, the longest tenured athletic trainer in major league baseball, will move into a new role with the White Sox in 2019 as head athletic trainer emeritus, the club announced today.
Schneider, 66, completed his 40th season with the White Sox in 2018. Originally hired by the Sox prior to the 1979 season, Schneider led one of baseball’s most successful and respected medical and training departments during his tenure. He oversaw major rehabilitation programs for Sox players like Bo Jackson (hip), Ozzie Guillen (knee), Robin Ventura (ankle) and Jake Peavy (lat), worked with Michael Jordan on his athletic conversion from basketball to baseball, and twice during his career responded to life-threatening situations, treating Greg Walker in 1988 and Danny Farquhar in 2018.
“The Chicago White Sox have been incredibly fortunate to have Herm Schneider as our organization’s trainer for the past 40 years,” said White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf. “Herm was with the White Sox even before my partners and I acquired the team in 1981, and he has provided the very best care to our players over four decades. Countless players owe the extensions of their careers to Herm and his tireless work ethic when it comes to injury prevention and treatment. Well respected across baseball, Herm’s commitment to excellence at his craft and focus on keeping players healthy has had an immeasurable impact on our team’s performance over the many years. Professional relationships aside, Herm is a very trusted and dear friend, and I look forward to him remaining with the organization in his new emeritus capacity.”
“While I certainly am proud of all the professional achievements and honors the medical and training staff has received over the past 40 years, it is the friendships and personal relationships that I remember best and make this decision to move into an emeritus role the hardest,” said Schneider. “The friendships I have made here will last the rest of my life.”
“I have been incredibly fortunate to work for Jerry Reinsdorf for the vast majority of my career and to work with an amazing group of doctors, trainers, executives, managers and staff who all share the same focus — the best possible care for everyone who wore a White Sox uniform. I look forward to sharing my knowledge and expertise across the organization in whatever manner seems appropriate in 2019.”
In his new role, Schneider will remain actively engaged with the baseball operations department as an advisor on medical issues relating to free agency, the amateur draft and player acquisition, while continuing to be a resource throughout the training department at the major and minor league levels.
“I first met Herm Schneider after being drafted by the White Sox in 1982, and our relationship has continued throughout my playing career, in player development and as a general manager, through the 2005 World Series championship and now in my role as executive vice president with the team,” said Ken Williams, White Sox executive vice president. “Herm takes great pride in his profession and his knowledge, is meticulous in his approach to our players’ health and has maintained an incredible standard of excellence and care over four decades with the White Sox.”
From 2002-18, the White Sox have used the disabled list just 185 times for a total of 9,057 days missed, both the lowest totals in the major leagues. During that 17-year span, the Sox have led the American League in fewest player days missed eight times, ranked second four times and third once.
A chronological listing of some of Schneider’s many career accomplishments:
Head Athletic Trainer for the American League at the 2016 All-Star Game
“Trainer of the Year” at the 2009 Pitch & Hit Club of Chicago’s Awards Banquet
He and his staff received the 2006 Dick Martin Award for Medical Staff of the Year by Baseball Prospectus
Presented by Mayor Richard M. Daley in 2004 with the City of Chicago’s Appreciation for outstanding service provided to the White Sox
Head Athletic Trainer for the American League at the 2003 All-Star Game at U.S. Cellular Field
Assistant trainer for All-Star Games in 1977 at old Yankee Stadium, 1983 at Comiskey Park and 1991 at Toronto
“Always the first at the ballpark and the last to leave each night, it is impossible to overstate what Herm Schneider has meant to the White Sox during his 40 years of service to our organization,” said Rick Hahn, White Sox senior vice president/general manager. “The ability of our medical and training staffs to keep our players healthy and on the field is unmatched in baseball over the past four decades.
“We are pleased that Herm will remain with the organization in an emeritus status as his knowledge and expertise will continue to be valued. While Herm will be extremely difficult to replace, discussions are already well underway, and we expect to have a public announcement soon about our future plans for the department.”
Prior to joining the White Sox, Schneider spent nine seasons in the New York Yankees organization, including two as assistant trainer for the World Champion Yankees in 1977 and 1978.
Schneider, a native of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, moved to upstate New York as a child and received a bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York in 1975. He and his wife, Janet, have two children, Daniel and Caitlin, and reside in Naperville.
Below is a collection of reflections, memories, thanks and well wishes from current and former White Sox managers, coaches, players and staff for longtime team head trainer Herm Schneider:
Harold Baines, former White Sox player and coach
“Herm Schneider is simply the best trainer I ever had. Even more, he is the closest friend I had in baseball … and always will be.”
Schneider had a direct impact on generations of White Sox, including Ozzie Guillén, A.J. Pierzynski and Mark Buehrle, seen here in 2007.

Mark Buehrle, former White Sox pitcher
“I’m proud of the fact that I took the mound every five days and never went on the disabled list, but there is no way I could have done it without the help of Herm and his staff. I’m fortunate I was able to spend the first 12 years of my career with Herm as my trainer. I consider him a great mentor and friend.”
Ozzie Guillen, former White Sox player and manager
“Herm Schneider was an anonymous hero for many years. I don’t think there is anyone better in the business. His dedication to his job was off the charts. I sincerely believe he is one of the most important people in the history of the White Sox. All the individual accolades that White Sox players have earned during Hermie’s tenure with the team are owed, in part, to him. He always supported and took care of the players. I am grateful for all he did for me. My family and I will always be thankful.
A.J. Pierzynski, former White Sox player
“Hermie was always there no matter what bumps or bruises I had. He always challenged me to be better and get back on the field. His love and care for the players will be missed with the White Sox. He is truly a legend.”
Dr. Charles Bush-Joseph, White Sox team physician
“Herm and I spent 15 years together, and it was a tremendous privilege to work with someone of Herm’s knowledge and skill at the elite level of professional sports. There is a reason why the White Sox led major league baseball as the healthiest team for many, many years, and that reason is Herm Schneider.”
Danny Farquhar, former White Sox pitcher
“Herm will forever hold a special place in my heart and in my story of survival. I would not be here without his skill and fast action. I am blessed to have worked with him and to know him as a friend.”
Ken “Hawk” Harrelson, former White Sox broadcaster and general manager
“Herm Schneider was one of the most impactful hires the White Sox organization ever made. For 40 years, Herm kept White Sox players on the field better than any other trainer in the game.”
Perhaps Schneider’s most famous rehabilitation case was preparing Bo Jackson — with an artificial hip — for a return to the baseball diamond.
Bo Jackson, former White Sox player
“Herm Schneider, better known to me as Hunches, is probably the most talented athletic trainer in all of sports. The knowledge he has on getting athletes back on the field is mind boggling. Without his athletic training assistance, I would never have gotten back on the field to play baseball. He is dedicated to his trade, and he sacrificed over half of his life to make sure thousands could have the quality of life that he should be enjoying. I love you Hunches.”
Paul Konerko, former White Sox player
”Having Herm as my trainer for all of my 16 years with the White Sox is truly one of my fondest memories. Not only is Herm a wonderful guy, he prepared me to be able to play the game at a level that I didn’t think was possible. I was lucky to have him. We were all lucky to have him. I wish him all the best in the next chapter of his life. Thanks Hermie!”
Tony La Russa, former White Sox manager/HOF
“To me, longevity is the best example you can point to in terms of someone’s excellence as a person and as a professional. Herm’s 40 years speak to how outstanding he was. From ownership, to the front office, to player development, to the manager, coaches and players on the field, it’s tough to earn respect in this game. Herm has done that as well as anyone who has done the head trainer job. He was a great mentor to a lot of trainers across baseball, and if you were fortunate enough to call him a friend, you have something very special.”
Gene Monahan, former New York Yankees head trainer
“We go back a long way. Over all these many, many wonderful years, we call each other brother. Herman became my very first major league assistant athletic trainer. He was spectacular and so only lasted two seasons before the White Sox came calling. The rest is history. He really made a wonderful name for himself. He treated everyone very well. He’s kind to his players, is an expert in his field, is always learning, always striving, always trying new things. Herm has an instinctive love for the game. Without that, you wouldn’t last as long as he has. That’s what made him so great and does to this day.”
Rick Renteria, current White Sox manager
“During my time as a member of the Chicago White Sox organization, I have grown to love Hermie as a coworker and friend. Though he will not be as busy with us on a day-to-day- basis, he will always carry my admiration and respect.”
Jim Thome, former White Sox player/HOF
“I cannot begin to thank Herm for the positive impact he made on my career, and of course, for the friendship that grew out of my time with the White Sox. Working with Herm, we were able to create a treatment and prevention protocol for my back, that no doubt, extended my career and helped me accomplish all that I eventually did in a major league uniform. But beyond the clubhouse partnership, we will remain personal friends for the rest of our lives.”

Robin Ventura, former White Sox player and manager
“Herm has enjoyed a great run. Basically, he is the fabric of the White Sox organization. He’s what helps tie us all together. Herm is that important of a figure for the White Sox. Personally, I will always be appreciative of all that he did for me as a player and as a manager. I cannot say enough. But what I will always cherish the most about Herm is his friendship.”
Dr. Nik Verma, White Sox team physician
“It truly was a wonderful honor and experience to work together with a legend like Herm Schneider. We all take great pride in what the medical team accomplished under his leadership, and Herm deserves the lion’s share of the credit.”
Greg Walker, former White Sox player and coach
“Herm has spent the past 40 years fighting relentlessly to be the best he can be at his job. I personally benefitted greatly from his dedication. He was by my side when I needed him most during a life-threatening event on the field. He was by my side every day rehabbing a chronically bad throwing arm. He sought out Al Vermeil to train a young, slow first baseman trying to gain a half step so I could remain in the league. But without a doubt, his biggest gift to me has been his friendship. I am honored to be able to call Herm my brother. Baseball, and especially the White Sox family, has been blessed to have Herm by our side the last 40 years.”

Media captionWatch Jim Bowen on TV show Bullseye
Broadcaster and comedian Jim Bowen, best known for hosting darts-based game show Bullseye in the 1980s and ’90s, has died at the age of 80.
His wife Phyllis confirmed the news to BBC Radio Lancashire.
The former deputy headmaster, who lived in North Lancashire, began his career as a stand-up comedian on the club circuit in the 1960s.
He became a household name when he began presenting Bullseye in 1981. The Sunday tea time show ran for 14 years.
It attracted 17.5 million viewers at its peak and involved three pairs of contestants – with a “thrower”, who would throw the darts, and a “knower”, who would answer general knowledge questions.

Image caption Bullseye’s prizes included cars and speedboats
Bowen became known for catchphrases including “Super, smashing, great”, “You can’t beat a bit of Bully!” and “Let’s look at what you could have won”.
Another favourite phrase – “keep out of the black and in to the red, nothing in this game for two in a bed” – referred to the segments of the darts board that the players had to hit.
His warm-hearted and quick-witted rapport with the contestants was a big part of the show’s appeal.
Bowen became Bullseye host after appearing on ITV show The Comedians, alongside the likes of Frank Carson, Russ Abbott and Bernard Manning.
He also had a number of TV acting roles, including in Muck and Brass, Jonathan Creek, The Grimleys, and as Hoss Cartwright in the second series of Peter Kay’s Phoenix Nights.

Sad to hear that another great has passed away, Jim Bowen. A lovely gentleman and a funny guy. Made one of my earliest radio appearances on his show. For many he will be remembered for Bullseye but for us @BBCLancashire it’s his “Happy Daft Farm” ! RIP legend and friend xx

Bowen started out as a teacher but was inspired to take up comedy after watching Ken Dodd perform two shows – lasting a total of seven hours – one night in Blackpool.
“I watched seven hours of Ken Dodd and I watched him completely decimate 7,000 people. He left them in ruins with laughter,” he told Radio Lancashire last year.
“And I thought, that’s some feeling that he must get after that. And so I learned his act.”
Bowen died two days after his hero.

Between 1999 and 2002, Bowen presented a live morning magazine programme on Radio Lancashire. He resigned after making a racist remark on air.
Fellow comedian and Radio Lancashire presenter Ted Robbins said he was a “very generous, kind man” who was “greatly loved” by the nation.
His agent Patsy Martin told the Press Association: “I will very sadly miss Jim. He was a very lovely, genuine man.”

In 2011, Bowen said he had learned to “appreciate all the things in life” after suffering two strokes.
Family friend John Pleus said Bowen died on Wednesday morning with Phyllis by his side after several weeks in hospital.
“He passed away very peacefully, she was with him. We are all shedding a tear,” he said.

Show Review: Beyond Wrestling, “Americanrana ‘17″
It’s the biggest show of the year for the alternate timeline version of PWG where everyone in the crowd is a Bruins fan. Let’s take a look!
When: Sunday, July 30, 6 p.m.
Where: The White Eagle, a cavernous Polish social club in the Green Island section of beautiful Worcester, Mass.
Who: A sellout crowd somewhere in the neighborhood of 450, apparently the largest audience in Beyond’s history. I went with Mark, in the third straight Americanrana we’ve seen together.
Note: After this show sold out in less than a day, the promoter added a “matinee” show that had Bobby Fish, AR Fox, and some other guys. We did not go to that show, because man, who has time.
Team PAWG (Jordynne Grace & LuFisto) vs. The Doom Patrol (Chris Dickinson & Jaka)
First, a word on our surroundings, as this is the first time Beyond has run in this building. It’s a big, open space with old-fashioned wood paneling on the walls and oppressive overhead neon; the effect is not too different from PWG’s building in Reseda, except the White Eagle’s walls are festooned with oil paintings and murals depicting the glories of life in Poland. I don’t know if you’re from the Northeast, but this kind of thing is really common: social clubs that functioned as community gathering places for immigrants from Ireland, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Quebec, and the various other overseas places that supplied the Industrial Revolution with most of its labor force. Nowadays the ethnic composition of the cities and towns is changing, though, so halls like this have been enduring identity crises of one stripe or another, which is how the Irish Music Festival near my hometown morphed into the Food Truck Fest and how a Polish club ended up playing host to an indie wrestling show. The barmaids were wonderfully salty Polish ladies, though, that ruled.
The crowd was insanely pumped. People came from as far away as Syracuse and perhaps farther. A lot of Beyond regulars, a lot of new people at their first Beyond show. Sadly, the guy from Indiana who has been at nearly every previous Beyond show was not there. I hope he’s OK.
Team PAWG came out to a good ovation, and then, instead of Doom Patrol’s normal music, Queen’s “Fat Bottom Girls” started playing (LuFisto and Jordynne Grace are, in the parlance of the American Medical Association, thiccc). The whole place erupted, people sang along, and even wrestlers standing on the stage in the back started clapping their hands over their heads. I love the atmosphere in a wrestling crowd at a big, anticipated show just as the first match gets under way. People are ready to run through walls.
This was a great first match, too, although there were a few sloppy spots. LuFisto looked a little rusty at times, and missed a few cues. But mostly this was a crowd-pleasing demonstration of suplexes, piledrivers, and suicide dives, with an undercurrent of is-this-OK-to-watch thanks to Chris Dickinson laying it the fuck in on his chops and strikes. If you don’t like intergender wrestling, this would be a match you wouldn’t like.
Team PAWG win, though, and Dickinson and Jaka cut appreciative “Thank you fans” promos afterward. Fun match, good start.
Rating: Four Changing Demographics.
Jonathan Gresham vs. Brian Cage
Is it just “Cage” now? Gresham comes out in great new ring gear: full-length tights with octopus tentacles in red, white, gray, and black. Very spiffy. A nice improvement over the boring red trunks.
Anyway, this match is too long. The crowd never really gets into it, as they’re mostly exhausted from the opening sprint. The story is obviously Gresham trying to use his superior cunning to take down the man-mountain Cage, and there are a few neat stretches where we see a new Gresham, a cartoonishly villainous Gresham, a Gresham who delights in causing pain for the sake of causing pain.
But mostly, this goes on too long. You need to keep Cage’s minutes down. My attention wandered, which shouldn’t happen during the second match of a show. Gresham wins with a surprise roll-up, continuing his “unlikely giant killer” thing that began back in June with a win over Michael Elgin in Connecticut.
Rating: Two Changing Demographics.
JT Dunn vs. John Silver
Before the bell even rings, these two are pushing and shoving and jaw-jacking, and I love it. I realize I’m never going to get storytelling from the indies, but just give me two guys who at least act like they want to kill each other. I can get invested. I can make my own story up. Maybe John Silver insulted JT Dunn’s silly entrance music? Maybe JT Dunn broke up John Silver’s parents’ marriage? I don’t know, but they seem really mad.
It helps that the Beyond crowd, for whatever reason, hates Dunn, and everything he does is greeted with a loud chorus of boos. It’s so hard to get audiences to really dislike a guy nowadays that it’s welcome when it finally happens.
This match, befitting the initial scuffling, is a fucking slugfest, with these two guys just unloading on each other, neither one really getting a clear advantage. When Silver is down on his knees gasping for breath, and Dunn starts giving him the hard kicks in the chest, and Silver responds by flipping Dunn off and screaming at him, it’s great. This is bedrock American wrestling. This is what we came to see. My only complaint is the complaint I always have, which is that it’s just a little too long.
Silver wins after a sprint of clashing finishers, and they don’t ruin it afterwards with one of those stupid handshakes. I would pay to see a rematch.
Rating: Four Changing Demographics.
TLC Match: Chuck Taylor vs. Swoggle
This started as a joke on Twitter, with Taylor saying the last thing he wanted to accomplish in his career was to have the world’s second-ever “WeeLC Match,” after the Swoggle-El Torito travesty at some WWE PPV a couple of years ago.
One thing led to another, and here we are: Chuck Taylor vs. Swoggle, who comes out to the ring as the crowd sings along to his New Found Glory entrance music. That song, I am stunned to learn, came out in 2001, which was years after I stopped paying attention to New Found Glory. How old are those guys? How old am I? Didn’t the singer used to be in Shai Hulud? Speaking of bands I haven’t thought of since Clinton was president. God almighty I’m old. I’m a walking pre-corpse.
Anyway, this match started out great, with Chuck Taylor absolutely beaning Swoggle right in the fucking face with a steel chair. Just as soon as Swoggle got in the ring, Taylor flung it right in his goddamn puss. So brutal. Very memorable.
The match then descended into what the Dadaists would have done to the theater if they had actual artistic talent: a completely magnificent clusterfuck. I don’t want to spoil the surprises, but what started out as a Taylor-Swoggle match quickly has a larger and larger cast as surprise run-ins proliferate, and purely comedic moments are interspersed with real brutality (Taylor throws himself into a ladder like an absolute madman and later on gets all slicked up by a pile of thumbtacks).
Rating: Four and a half Demographic Changes.
INTERMISSION: I bought some DVDs and a ticket to the Women’s Wrestling Revolution show in Providence next month. There were guys selling tons of Japanese stuff, but I was way too intimidated to even browse extensively. I’ll ask the wrong question, and everyone will point and scream, “Fraud! Fraud! You’re not a true wrestling nerd!” I may be wrong about this. I have a lot of big mental problems.
One thing about Beyond shows is that there is no seating, so people can come and go as they please. Some people didn’t grasp this. They left their spots by the ring during intermission, so a bunch of us who had been farther back moved up. When the people who had left came back, they were disgruntled. One of them, a longhaired dipshit with a heavy metal band T-shirt, insisted on principle and tried to squeeze his way back to the ring. Buddy, if this were a hardcore show in 1994, I would passive-aggressively elbow you in the back of the head during one of the mosh parts in Lifetime’s set. I’ve matured, though, and so instead of slam-dancing into people, I write about them on my Tumblr blog.
BACK TO THE SHOW!
Lucha Brothers (Penta El 0 M or whatever the fuck & Rey Fenix) vs. EYFBO/LAX (Mike Draztik/Santana & Angel Ortiz/Angel)
Mexicans vs. Puerto Ricans is lowkey a major ethnic rivalry in northeastern US cities and towns, kind of the 21st century version of Irish vs. Italians. That’s the closest thing to a story in this match, which was like a 12-minute highlight reel featuring two of the best teams doing it today.
The building was insane for this match, just people screaming their lungs out, as the two teams did their things. This was the match wrestlers came out from the back to watch. AR Fox was watching on appreciatively! This is pretty much what you expect it would be: constant high-risk moves, insanely stiff strikes from Penta, Fenix doing stuff on the ropes that seems like it should not be possible for a human being to do. No one sells a single move, which doesn’t matter in a match like this. This is a super hero story: Fenix and Penta look like comic book characters, and Draztik and Angel act like the stars of some Saturday morning cartoon show about picaresque adventures in Spanish Harlem. None of their comedy personae were on display in this match: they were all business, and the match was the better for it.
EYFBO got the win, and the crowd threw money in the ring, like in Mexico. Afterwards, both teams took the mic to thank the crowd.
Rating: Four and a half Demographic Changes.
David Starr vs. Donovan Dijak
Dijak is “moving South,” he is “getting ready for what comes NeXT,” he is “going to be a contracted talent in the WWE developmental system,” if you catch my drift, so this match had an air of inevitability about it: David Starr, who has been in every Americanrana and has never lost, was not going to lose to a short-timer heading out to Team Triple H.
That honestly spoiled it a little; Starr vs. Dijak should have been a long-running rivalry culminating with a blowoff match, rather than hastily putting out what felt a little like an after-thought.
Despite that, this is a good match. Starr is faster than Dijak and has superior mat skills, while Dijak is a nimble giant. Starr spends much of the match working on Dijak’s leg, which is very old school, while Dijak keeps looking for the elusive knockout move. At one point Starr takes the microphone during the match and taunts Dijak with “You sold out!” David, everyone in wrestling wants to sell out. Except the Young Bucks.
Starr gets the win and then says nice things about Dijak on the microphone, prefacing them with, “I know that, like five minutes and 28 seconds ago, I accused you of being a sellout ...”
Rating: Three and a half Demographic Changes
Roppongi Vice (Rocky Romero & Trent) vs. Da Hit Squad (Monsta Mack & Mafia)
I know that Roppongi Vice broke up in New Japan, but this is the Beyond Cinematic Universe, and in this timeline they are still together. The story for this match was that Trent and Monsta Mack had been beefing on Twitter about some match in for Jersey All-Pro when Trent was a wee lad and Mack did him dirty. This started out hot, with Rocky and Maff having to pull their partners apart, lots of really nasty back and forth, Trent saying, “You think you’re a tough guy? You’re a fat bully” and Mack using the word “bitch” like a comma. Good! Anger! Emotion! Story.
This pretty quickly switched to dual brawls through the crowd, though, and those are ... not hugely fun. The crowd slowly deflated, picking back up only a little when all four were back in the ring, RPG were doing their double-team stuff, and Da Hit Squad were being big nasty dudes. Rocky and Trent get the win, and when it looks like there’s going to be a hard-won Handshake of Respect between Trent and Mack, Mack spits in Trent’s face and Da Hit Squad sulk away. You know what, Mack? You showed yourself to be the littler man here.
Rating: Two and a Half Demographic Changes.
Joey Janela w/Penelope Ford vs. Matt Riddle
This has building since June, which is what passes for storytelling these days, but it’s a great clash of very different wrestlers: Joey Janela is the brain-fried traditionalist, mixing the breakneck insanity of ECW with the overt cheesiness of 1980s wrestling, while Riddle is the cynical mercenary, just here because he smokes too much reefer to be in MMA. Both are indie darlings, and both are incredibly different.
One of the many things I like about Janela is that he’s divisive. People are either cultists or haters. There were people behind me squealing for Riddle’s abs, whose hatred of Janela started with modest boos and just built into throat-ripping screeches of “Fuck you! You’re ugly! YOU’RE NASTY!” as the match went on. That’s good character work!
This match was basically a story about how much punishment Riddle could inflict, and how much pain Janela was willing to accept. Terrence MacSwiney once said in war it’s not the side that can inflict the most that wins, but the side that can endure the most; would that prove true here?
Janela did some genuinely insane and dangerous spots here, including a back flip from the top turnbuckle onto the apron, and then flopping onto the floor. It was one of the many “Oh my God is he really hurt” moments in the young career of Joey Janela; Chris Dickinson actually ran over to ask the ref if Janela was OK.
He was OK! Well, as OK as Joey Janela can be. Finally, after absorbing an inhuman amount of punishment, Janela cinched a front facelock on Riddle, who tapped out, in his first-ever Beyond Wrestling loss.
I spontaneously pumped my fists and screamed. It was a legitimate surprise, and a big, emotionally satisfying ending, a symbolic reaffirmation of traditional carny values. I don’t know where Janela goes from here. I don’t know where Riddle goes from here. I just know that they put on one hell of a good match at one of the best shows I’ve ever seen in person.

WASHINGTON COMMANDER IN CHIEF Donald Trump has actually informed website visitors that his Mar-a-Lago retreat is actually put together flawlessly for foreign visits, but the Chinese side was in the beginning skeptical when word happened that Trump would love to satisfy Chinese President Xi Jinping certainly there, inning accordance with management officials. For these main reasons, that is actually a good idea to know exactly what you are getting involved in just before you enter that. Rather than merely flagging down a taxi and giving the chauffeur the deal with from your destination, inquire the amount of this will certainly be They won't likely have the ability to give you an exact number - unless they possess standard costs - yet they may easily offer you an estimate. Check out and also see if there are actually packages that consist of red or white wine with supper or if there's a corkage cost if they bring their personal bottle. . If you are actually even more from a laid-back diner, then appreciate the full smorgasbord for breakfast as well as lunch and dinner.
Perform pass by the very same shade for the flooring and a dining table, but it excels to have all of them corresponding. This is actually the recipe I like to create for large celebrations, as well as I adore to create it even more completely neighbors. Salads are actually balanced as well as dental filling, and had in the past or even alongside supper fill up the stomach properly, avoiding our team coming from taking very large aidings from the main dinner courseThis is considerable because certainly not overindulging during the night is actually extremely important for click the following post body.A big volume of salad can easily even be taken all at once food alongside some enhancement including soup, whole wheat or grain bread sandwich etc Every different setup, off breakfast to supper to professional celebrations requires varied sorts of glass, dishes, and flatware supper sets. Hampden's Pork as well as Shellfish Supper is among the earliest church dinners in the USA. I had beverages at Olio before supper at Elaia as well as was delighted to have even more from the delectable cider draft beer I had.
