oh. oh. oh. oh. when madeleine sings "what holy men really mean when they / speak of all thats been and all that wont / and why you cannot sleep for sighing / why womanhood is more than crying / i’m stronger now than you have ever known" joey sings "why wont you fight for me?" in the back. just barely, BARELY there in the recording but clear as fucking day in the live version with the other lady's harmonies. oh my god
"what holy men really mean (why wont you fight for me?)" OH. "i’m stronger now than you have ever known (why won't you fight for me?)" OH.

Erik with a skull, because why not? (Someone take it before he starts to recite Hamlet.)
Oddly enough this is probably my favourite POTO art I’ve done, but I’ll be back to drawing more book things soon.

The links between Pray
If God made all man in his image, then honey I am no man
And Drinking Song for the Socially Anxious
If God made all man in his image then God's a fucking nerd
are slowly driving me insane.
Pray is about personal strength, being what you need on your own, even if you wish someone else would be there for you, and DSFTSA is about finding solace and comfort in another person when being alone is scary but being in a crowd is too much. And even though they ostensibly say different things, they're kind of the same? "I am no man" is a reference to Lord of the Rings - pretty nerdy, right? And yet the tone is so different. In DSFTSA, God is brought down to the level of a geeky human, and in Pray, the speaker is elevated above the rank of mere mortal. But it fits each song so well! DSFTSA shows something sacred in the peace of the right company, and Pray shows the divine in a woman's inner strength. In both cases, holiness is a personal quality that comes from strength and courage, whether that be standing alone or opening up to someone.
And either way we're all nerds - Madeleine and Joey know their audience well lmao!

My growing collection of TAD stuff 🥰
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In my previous posts I've seen tags about where I get these and how others can get them too and the answer to the first question is that my sister makes them for me! These are presents for special occasions like birthdays and TAD album anniversaries (the MOST special occasions of all lol). She's an enabler and I'm ridiculously lucky.
As for the second question, as much as I would like everyone to have these too, we are in the Philippines and most of you are abroad, and my sister doesn't want to deal with shipping things out of the country. HOWEVER. If you want to produce your own stuff, my sister can send you the designs for ANY AMOUNT dropped in her ko-fi. Then you can print them onto shirts, mugs, totes, etc. with your own choice of materials. You can email her here if you want: [email protected].
In the meantime, I'm gonna keep growing my hoard. 😘

"without you i’m stronger, i’m no longer filled with wonder, how wrong you were" hidden behind the lines in welly boots and "why wont you fight for me?" hidden behind the lyrics in pray. something about them matches

Something something the cracks you made I filled with mortar, our mortar was your laughter and you hurled curses at the land, all the words that came out wrong, a broken pot can still hold water, universes out of broken hands, symphonies and sweat and sex mean nothing when you are obsessed, in the wreck stands our piano like a wound i play our song to see if it's in tune

My fascination/obsession with The Amazing Devil and my willingness to eventually find a reason to recommend it to all of my friends is like....
I'd be inclined to call it a problem except that I know that, yeah, it's a special interest, but it's a special interest because of how much these songs have helped me heal and grow as a person. Lines like, "It's just your voice learning for once to stand up tall" and "What you see is not the dark, it's just the gods upturning inkpots 'cause they know what you'll become".
Or Madeleine singing, "I tried, I really fucking tried, but the rain kept coming down, I watched that woman drown/Shoulder the sky!" while Joey sings, "I can't wait to show you just how much I know you can be/Just let the rain fall".
Or how I use "Chords" as a sort of emotional cheat code to get myself to cry when I know I need to but don't know how else to let myself do it. I get out the tissues and turn on "Chords" and I'm ugly sobbing by the time the chorus first comes up. As a personal note, my dad has early-onset dementia, so, "Your dad will forget the words/Ah, fucking bastard, what is it.. " gets me especially sad (I haven't been courageous enough to listen to "Marbles" in a long time).
It's incredible how 2 people from another country thousands of miles away, who are complete strangers unaware of your specific existence, can still somehow write music that resonates with your life and helps you deal with problems they don't even know you have. I think it's an example of the power of empathy and compassion, and also of art. And of how our struggles can be so similar/we're not alone with our problems because there's someone else out there dealing with similar shit. And therein lies the Dear Hearts, right? A community of people brought together by this music inspired to "be good/be safe/be kind" to each other. I love it and am so grateful for it!
