my first was a really unknown manga that i read in 6th grade called "Prétear" um, i don't recommend the anime as it has almost nothing to do with the manga but the manga was super cute :3

Weird/Fun Dream from July 29, 2024

When you have a dream about something you haven't thought about in years, and it goes sad (angst) quick.

Anyone remember Prétear?

Dream appeared to be post-story/kind of in epilogue, but Hayate and Himeno weren't dating. They were spending A LOT of time together though.

Enter random character that Hayate was apparently in a relationship with. If anyone wants to take this and use it, they can make it an OC or reader insert. 🤷🏼‍♀️ She had been waiting for Hayate for a while, but he had forgotten they were supposed to meet up. And this had been happening a lot lately.

She heads off and later sees Hayate with Himeno in a park, sitting on a bench together. They're talking and smiling, and he's completely lost track of time and forgotten he had plans (again).

She does "confront" him at that point, but it's more she steps into view. He sees her and asks what she's doing there, and she tells him she had been waiting for him for their date but he didn't show up or answer his phone when she tried to text or call him.

He thinks she's exaggerating for a second as he pulls his phone out, but then he sees the time, the messages/missed call(s), and the amount of battery life his phone still has.

Hayate apologizes and tells her he lost track of time. Himeno may join in, or she may not feel it's her place to get (more) in the middle. Hayate's phone then dies, and Himeno offers to help because she has a charger. They get a bit distracted with that, so they don't notice OC/reader quietly approaching and leaving the ring Hayate gave her beside him before hurrying away. She feels hurt/ heartbroken.

Hayate does look back up and notices she's gone. He looks around, and his hand brushes against the ring. He feels some dread and pockets it as he tries to locate her. Himeno does try to help.

Eventually, she breaks and becomes either something like the Princess of Disaster, some new kind of enemy, or a source of power for a new foe. The new enemy then goes off to gather new allies/henchmen/etc.

Later, Himeno and the Leafe Knights witness the "birth" of a new villain/general, and this general vows loyalty to their new queen. They have no idea who this new queen is. I think at some point that she is revealed, which leads Hayate into depression/more angst.

(Also had a minor crossover with other characters in other media being controlled/taken over/convinced somehow to join her (new villain). And one of these was Wally West? Which then lead to some of the Bats appearing, including Nightwing, and Wally snapping for the "Joker" to back off before he transformed.

This little crossover bit can be deleted/skipped entirely.)

I think the dream ended around this point, but it would be nice if it ended happily somehow?

Pretear review is hard because I just wanna point at certain scenes and go “ITS SO GOOD GUYS-“

I think it’s interesting how Revolutionary Girl Utena has that line in that play about how “girls who don’t become princesses are doomed to become witches” (or something to that effect)…

And then a few years later, Prétear makes a point about how the Prétear and the Princess of Disaster are basically two sides of the same coin (specifically, the Princess of Disaster is a corrupted Prétear)…

And then about a decade later you have Puella Magi Madoka Magica with the connection between Magical Girls and Witches.

Granted, all three draw heavy inspiration from fairy tales and folklore, where princesses and witches abound, but there’s also a deeper, systemic reason for those dichotomies…

I'm still trying to figure out what to do with this page, as it was originally for posting characters as I thought I'd no longer be using my Twitter account (MagicalGirloftheDay). I do want to keep it around, though, as it does feel at the least like when I'm on here I do not see the general drama the magical girl community on Twitter has. There also seems to be a lack of any interest of anything that isn't a mainstream title on there, so general conversations become boring when most people on there in the English speaking comm ignore much else if it isn't Sailor Moon, Madoka Magica, or Pretty Cure. I've finished over 130 titles in the genre, and have seen many more I have not finished, so I feel a bit stifled going on there (ie like my recent posts with Prétear - doesn't seem practically anyone on there has even heard of it before.)

However, I do have plans to write a recommendation list consisting of anime, manga, and video games related to the genre. It will take some time as I have a very busy library job and other personal matters weekly. When I made this page I had a lot more free time originally, but nowadays I'm usually covering work shifts or am at some medical appointment. By the time I'm home I want to rest, and making character descriptions and posting several characters I already have in the past isn't something I can do too much right now.

Anyway, I have attached the recommendation list. I will be considering remaking the post on here about it or just linking it. I'm usually on Twitter has that page was made back in 2019. I will finish posting the Magical Girl Magazine scans here that I have as well, with more to come within this month.

Binge watched the entirety of Prétear today. It was good!

Things I liked:

The exploration of grief and how it effects people in ways that aren't always obvious

The feeling of magical girl shenanigans having actual consequences

Kei being the sensible one

Things I didn't like:

The awkward age gap romance? (But I guess that's just anime things)

Sasame's whole arc felt a little rushed
