Hello ranger’s apprentice fandom can we talk real quick about the stupidest thing Flanagan ever wrote

It’s about the bows. Yanno, the rangers’ Iconique™️ main weapon. That one. You know the one.

Flanagan. Flanagan why are your rangers using longbows.

“uh well recurve arrows drop faster” BUT DO THEY. FLANAGAN. DO THEY.

the answer is no they don’t. Compared to a MODERN, COMPOUND (aka cheating) bow, yes, but compared to a longbow? Y’know, what the rangers use in canon? Yeah no a recurve actually has a FLATTER trajectory. It drops LATER.

This from an article comparing the two:

“Both a longbow and a recurve bow, when equipped with the right arrow and broadhead combination, are capable of taking down big game animals. Afterall, hunters have been doing it for centuries with both types of bows.

However, generally speaking and all things equal, a recurve bow will offer more arrow speed, creating a flatter flight trajectory and retain more kinetic energy at impact.

The archers draw length, along with the weight of the arrow also affect speed and kinetic energy. However, the curved design of the limbs on a recurve adds to its output of force.”

It doesn’t actually mention ANY distance in range! And this is from a resource for bow hunting, which, presumably, WOULD CARE ABOUT THAT SORT OF THING!

Okay so that’s just. That’s just the first thing.

The MAIN thing is that even accounting for “hur dur recurves drop faster” LONGBOWS ARE STILL THE STUPID OPTION.

Longbows, particularly and especially ENGLISH longbows, are—as their name suggests—very long. English longbows in particular are often as tall or taller than their wielder even while strung, but especially when unstrung. An unstrung longbow is a very long and expensive stick, one that will GLADLY entangle itself in nearby trees, other people’s clothes, and any doorway you’re passing through.

And yes, there are shorter longbows, but at that point if you’re shortening your longbow, just get a goddamn recurve. And Flanagan makes a point to compare his rangers’ bows to the Very Long English Longbow.

Oh, do you know how the Very Long English Longbow was mostly historically militarily used? BY ON-FOOT ARCHER UNITS. Do you know what they’re TERRIBLE for? MOUNTED ARCHERY.

Trust me. Go look up right now “mounted archery longbow.” You’ll find MAYBE one or two pictures of some guy on a horse struggling with a big stick; mostly you will actually see either mounted archers with RECURVES, or comparisons of Roman longbow archers to Mongolian horse archers (which are neat, can’t lie, I love comparing archery styles like that).

Anyway. Why are longbows terrible for mounted archery? Because they’re so damn long. Think about it: imagine you’re on a horse. You’re straddling a beast that can think for itself and moves at your command, but ultimately independently of you; if you’re both well-trained enough, you’re barely paying attention to your horse except to give it commands. And you have a bow in your hands. If your target is close enough to you that you know, from years of shooting experience, you will need to actually angle your bow down to hit it because of your equine height advantage, guess what? If you have a longbow, YOU CAN’T! YOUR HORSE IS IN THE WAY BECAUSE YOUR BOW IS TOO LONG! Worse, it’s probably going to get in the general area of your horse’s shoulder or legs, aka moving parts, which WILL injure your horse AND your bow and leave you fresh out of both a getaway vehicle and a ranged weapon. It’s stupid. Don’t do it.

A recurve, on the other hand, is short. It was literally made for horse archers. You have SO much range of motion with a recurve on horseback; and if you’re REALLY good, you know how to give yourself even more, with techniques like Jamarkee, a Turkish technique where you LITERALLY CAN AIM BACKWARDS.

Yes, that’s real! This type of draw style is INCREDIBLY versatile: you can shoot backwards on horseback, straight down from a parapet or sally port without exposing yourself as a target, or from low to the ground to keep stealthy without banging your bow against the ground. And, while I’m sure you could attempt it with a longbow, I wouldn’t recommend it: a recurve’s smaller size makes it far more maneuverable up and over your head to actually get it into position for a Jamarkee shot.

A recurve just makes so much more SENSE. It’s not a baby bow! It’s not the longbow’s lesser cousin! It’s a COMPLETELY different instrument made to be used in a completely different context! For the rangers of Araluen, who put soooo much stock in being stealthy and their strong bonds with their horses, a recurve is the perfect fit! It’s small and easily transportable, it’s more maneuverable in combat and especially on horseback, it offers more power than a longbow of the same draw weight—really, truly, the only advantage in this case that a longbow has over the recurve is that longbows are quicker and easier to make. But we KNOW the rangers don’t care about that, their KNIVES use a forging technique (folding) that takes several times as long as standard Araluen forging practices at the time!

Something that I think about every so often is the fact that Merrick has a last name. A last name that we only hear once. That we only hear in the FINAL EPISODE of all places and it’s never touched on again. Like, ok, up until that point it was kinda assumed that Animaria wasn’t really a society that had last names; given its existence being placed 3000 years ago, it was presumable that it wouldn’t have been a present cultural thing since last names as a common practice didn’t properly start in the West until around the medieval period. (Though to be completely fr the geographic location of Animaria is pretty spotty; I say west because iirc one of the show runners wanted to give this fictional ancient civilization a “Celtic aesthetic”. But I digress)

The only other Animarians we know about are Princess Shayla and Pardolis (that ancient warrior who’s namedropped in ep6); neither of whom are given last names. But you know what? Fine okay. Shayla is royalty, who typically aren’t referred to with surnames (usually at least; there’s often a presence of family, dynasty, or “house” names, but we’re going to assume Animaria society might not have been that complex). And Pardolis, well, we only hear his name in one episode. It’s possible he could have had a a surname and they just didn’t mention it. We didn’t hear the names of any of the other ancient warriors after all.

Like, the first time I heard it I thought it was French. I swear to god I heard Phillip Andrew pronouncing the name with a silent n and my mind jumped to French. But a quick online search yields the result that it’s apparently FILIPINO in origin?? (Well, one website guessed that it came from a Spanish word so I guess it’s Spanish in origin[?])

…This might have opened more cans of worms than I thought it would….

Given the Gaelic roots of the names Shayla and Merrick and the pseudo Latin thing they have going on with “Pardolis,” plus the whole “Celtic aesthetic” of Animaria, I had initially assumed they were implying the kingdom was located somewhere in Europe. But then there’s the whole thing with the Animarium lifting into the sky and leaving behind Turtle Lake (And Turtle Cove is supposed to be in Colorado? Apparently? Someone correct me please), as well as the whole thing with traces of Animaria being found in the Amazon rainforest that led to Cole’s parents embarking there. Like I said earlier, the exact location of Animaria is spotty. So really, geographic location is no help in trying to understand naming conventions or the exact language system they would use for determining names.

But just to temporarily segue back to Merrick having a last name at all; they really just threw that in there at the end as if this was knowledge we all had this entire time? It just throws me for a fucking loop to hear everyone saying their name against Master Org in the final battle and Merrick just calls out this surname that had never been mentioned beforehand. Why does he get a last name? What did last names mean in Animaria society? Does it denote a noble status? Or the opposite, that last names were only used amongst the common people? Does this connect in any way to Merrick’s inferiority complex; is having a surname a hint that he came from the lower classes and that adds on to why he feels so unworthy of being in a romantic relationship with Princess Shayla? What the fuck does his last name even mean?? Was the rest of the team aware of his last name and that’s why none of them had the reaction I’m having during the final battle? Did he tell it to them offscreen? How soon after meeting them? Does this man tell his teammates anything? Did Shayla tell it to them? Why does he have a last name?

Oooooh, so for the first part, Wyll does kinda figure out something with helping Majexatli. Mainly just in like, making sure their hunger and hunting is directed at enemies, as well as making sure they get to hunt regularly. And he helps them out with their hunts when they’re hunting an animal or monster, which actually goes great with Wyll ending up as a ranger post-Mizora.

I think the biggest help though is just that Wyll… is there and knows, right? Having it not be a secret is good. But also just, I think I’ve talked about it before but Majexatli’s Malar worship is kinda symbolic of their anger, and their personal character arc isn’t about Malar worship being bad, it’s that they’ve demonized their anger and believe themselves monstrous for getting angry or surviving. So having Wyll see them at what they think is their most monstrous (scared, angry, in the middle of a hunt) and have him love them regardless just means the world and I think is a massive step towards Majexatli realizing that their anger isn’t inherently bad or evil.

As for how Majexatli’s relationship with Malar changes… I’m not sure how much it does. If anything, I think it’s stronger. I mean, it’s always been a little strained since Majexatli, despite what they think about themselves, is a good person and cares about people in a way that’s somewhat at odds with Malar worship. But like I said, it’s kinda symbolic of their anger, and while previously they held a lot of shame and self hatred around it, after what happens with Wyll, they have less shame about it. They deeply regret hurting Wyll, but Wyll accepting them as they are and understanding them gives them the confidence and ability to be more open about their worship and practices (which in turn is good, because the hiding and bottling up their anger is what leads to outbursts that could hurt people).

And as for kisses,,,, yes,,,, god. The first chance Wyll gets, he is going to kiss their scar so gently and lovingly it’s going to make Majexatli tear up with how gentle it is. Oughhhh.
