As I’ve been rereading The Burning Bridge and The Icebound Land, I’m reminded of my take on Erak’s character. I was going to explain why I don’t like him, but as I typed this out, my opinion changed. Anyway, here’s my take.

I understand that he apprehended Will and Evenlyn in a time of war. Will and Evenlyn were ruining Morgarath’s plans and putting Erak’s crew in danger. It makes sense Erak captured them.

Though morally upsetting, I understand why he wanted to sell them as slaves. He didn’t know Morgarath had already paid them, and thus believed two slaves would be his only bounty from this excursion.

What’s really upsetting to me is how he knew they were going to suffer, felt sad for them, and still gave them as slaves. He didn’t even accept any payment. He knew what he was doing was wrong, and he still did it.

And then? He’s surprised when Will develops a warmweed addiction?? You signed him up for that!! Why is this a shock to you!!

All that being said, I do applaud him from learning from his mistakes. There definitely are a lot of people who would see Will and Evenlyn suffering, then dig in their heels and say they can’t control it (or even that they deserve it). But not him. He helped them escape, risking punishment in doing so. I also imagine that was a transformative experience for him, one that shaped him into a better leader. That’s beyond good, and I applaud him for that.

I just wish the transition was messier. I wish Will and Evenlyn weren’t so eager to forgive him. I wish he showed a little more remorse. I wish the experience would have made him change the policies on slavery in Skandia. I want it to be messy. I want it to be real.
