i think i forgot to make a post after the first ep because my first impressions of it were just. not that deep. i do remember going in with zero expectations and thinking hey this is actually better and more interesting than what i'd imagined! but it still wasn't That interesting

HOWEVER

SECOND EPISODE ELEVATED EVERYTHING

first of all peak bishounen demon lord design here. nothing revolutionary but a solid classic. 10/10 no notes

and like okay so the premise of a ye olden fantasy times demon lord being defeated then resurrected into a far future sci-fi world sounded really fun with the potential to be super funny. it made me think of paripi koumei which was basically incredible

the first ep was a little higher on the drama than the humor imo, but the second ep? second ep, the humor really hit

i'm absolutely loving the demon lord's extremely loyal, faithful follower who worked for centuries to resurrect him and is also his number one simp. like this poor girl almost got outed as a demon king otome doujinshi otaku. right in front of her demon king

demon lord's job hunt and the outcome of it is also just. i won't even spoil it because. hilarious. truly

the worldbuilding is also reasonably interesting, i think that was one of the things that impressed me most in the first episode

overall, really pleasantly surprised by this one and looking forward to more!

At one point I realized that it was kinda dumb Totsuka and Megan didn't have animal motifs since all mages have a little spiritual animal familiar called an Anima but i didnt know of motifs when i made their designs so i was like Dam Girl. You lost an opportunity here. What ur gonna do. But then i decided that now ill use the animal motifs only for very very skilled mages because theyre in more contact with their animas so itll show up. Now i dont need to put a cat motif on Totsuka >:>

No one hates D&D 5 more than people who only play D&D 5, it seems. That response is so common, and people act like it's normal.

It's not normal to play a game you don't have fun with.

Hate the combat rules? There are games with fun combat, however you define fun combat, from "rules light do whatever you want with powers" like Dungeon Crawl Classics, Mork Borg, and Mutants & Masterminds to "tactical crunchy combat where character options matter" like Pathfinder 2, Lancer, and Anima: Beyond Fantasy.

Hate combat and just want to focus on the story? Literally the Entire Fucking Library of games Powered By The Apocalypse is built around exactly that, for just about every genre you can imagine. That and the new run of World of Darkness games (Vampire: the Masquerade 5 and fam) literally say in the rules, "if combat has taken longer than 3 rolls, it's too long and needs to wrap."

Want to run X franchise in D&D? Some one has made it. Yeah, a lot of them try (and fail) to adapt D&D to things where the dungeon monster killing game doesn't fit (like literally any horror IP) but I garuntee you a fan has made a game custom fit to your favorite show or book. Doctor Who has a custom built game. Star Wars has a custom built game. Fucking POKEMON TABLETOP UNITED is a legendary success story for custom games. Fucking Duck Tales (the first one) has a custom built game. Just look for it.

Have some other weird fucking niche complaint about D&D? Some one made the exact same complaint and made a game about it, and it's somewhere on itch.io if you look, whether it's as basic as "why does D&D exploration suck?" to as hyper specific as "why can't D&D handle my group pretending to be a writing room for a show starring a dog that has to have the script be approved by the dog, who is one of the players?" I literally have that second game. In a collection of several such games. The Ultimate Micro RPG Collection. It's a book, you can fi d it anywhere, and it costs less than half of what you paided for that Players Handbook that you don't fucking read.

i think one of the reasons that indie designers can get snippy with people who are loud and aggressive about only playing d&d is because the latter frequently and loudly completely disdain and scoff at the very concept of game design being a skill or something that even exists
