Chemistry
Pairings: Reader x Reyner, Y/N x Reyner, GN reader x Reyner
Wordcount: 1416
Rune had left you a note saying Reyner's shoulder was acting up again and he was too proud to ask, but could you whip him up some more ointment and drop it round.
You’d been out late the night before and spent most of the day in the Glazelands, so you’d shrugged off the tiredness and chill you were feeling down to that as you trudged over to the workshop in the drizzle, your beloved canine companion at your heels. Your plan was to drop this off, make sure he used it, make some soup and then have an early night.
The bell jingled as you entered, and Reyner was at the back of his workshop, planing something down. He turned and smiled – was that sarcastic? - before dusting his hands down on his apron and approaching the counter.
"Chemist, to what do I owe this pleasure?"
"I've been hearing about someone's sore shoulder," he raised an eyebrow at the hoarseness in your voice. You coughed slightly, attempting to clear it. You hadn’t spoken to many people today, besides a few words of praise to your dog, so maybe it was hoarse out of non-use.
"Well”, he scratched his arm, “maybe it has flared up a bit again, but I didn't intend to drag you out on this dismal day."
“I'm here now, though. Shall we?" She gestured to his stool behind the counter and he thankfully didn't offer a retort. Reyner sat down, facing away from you before lifting his apron straps over his head and folding it up on the counter. He then unbuttoned the top half of his shirt, dropping it down from his shoulders, revealing his toned and muscular back. You remembered the first time you’d seen him topless feeling your stomach flip, but this time your head felt too foggy to think of anything but the job at hand. You’d retrieved the jar and set about unscrewing the lid, before dipping four fingers in the pot and scooping up the cream before setting out rubbing the warming ointment across his shoulders. You felt him tense at your touch at first but soon relaxed, even letting out an exhale. You spent a few minutes rubbing it in, focusing hard on your work.
“I admit it does feel much better after that.” He spoke up, breaking your concentration. It probably was just more of a poor massage at that point.
"Remember to take it easy and reapply as necessary." You lectured, removing your hand from his shoulders in a signal that you were finally done.
"I will, carpenter's honour." He stood up from the stool and started to button his shirt back up as you went to screw the lid back on the tub, or at least attempted to. Suddenly, you felt horribly dizzy. The room seemed to spin relentlessly for a moment or two, and the tub dropped from your hand, rolling on its side on the wooden floor. You clutched your head, rubbing your temples and the world set itself to right.
"Whoa, you all right there?" Reyner asked. Was that concern in his voice? He bent down, picking up the tub and placing it on the counter. Luckily, you noted, the contents had stayed put. You really had no strength to go out and forage for more ingredients tonight.
"Yes, I’m fine,” you replied, curtly. “I think I’m just feeling a little tired. I should head home..." You were embarrassed now and you just wanted out of there. You could just hear Reyner at the inn later on, spinning a yarn about the weird Chemist again. You went to pick up your bag when, once again, the whole world flipped and your balance totally abandoned you. Bracing yourself to go crashing down to the floor, you were surprised when the pain didn’t come and arms were now encircling you.
"Y/N, what's wrong?"
If you’d been thinking clearly at the moment, you would’ve noticed that that was one of the handful of times he’d ever said your name. "I'm fine, sorry – I must’ve misstepped." You tried to free yourself from his grip – you were absolutely humiliated - but he stayed firm, before he span you round and forced you down onto the stool by pushing down on your shoulders, placing the back of his hand against your forehead.
"Liar. You're burning up. That’s it.” Suddenly, an arm was around your back and another under your knees and you found yourself up in Reyner’s arms.
"No!” You protested. “Put me down – you need to rest your shoulder. I’m fine.”
"Allow me to look after you for once, Chemist." He scolded, holding firm.
You didn’t respond to that - it would be nice to be looked after. Ever since you had arrived in town there had been suspicious and mean looks. Though maybe one or two people had begun to warm to you, you were positive they wouldn't bat an eye if you just decided to leave one night.
You allowed yourself to relax slightly in his arms, all the sudden becoming aware of how warm you did feel. What a bad chemist, brushing off your own symptoms. What use were you to anyone else if you couldn’t even look after yourself? Seeing that you’d somewhat settled, Reyner had made up his mind. He started walking towards the staircase at the back of the shop. He carried you up the stairs, through his apartment before depositing you gently down on his bed. This was awkward, you shouldn’t be here.
"Reyner, you're very kind, but I'll be fine by myself at home." You went to swing a leg out of the bed before he pushed your shoulders back down into the heavenly soft pillows.
"Nonsense. I can't send you home in your condition in the pouring rain, Y/N. You can rest here, be a good patient like I was for you.”
You could’ve scoffed at that, but you’d also be a liar if you didn't admit his bed was comfortable, far more than your own. The cottage was a state – musty, creaky, drafty, dusty – all things you knew they'd hoped that would drive you out of town in a way. That's why you worked so late most of the time, to make sure you felt worn out enough to fall asleep in that depressing room.  You watched as he walked over to the kitchen and retrieved a glass out of the cupboard, before filling it up with water. A thought sprang to mind.
“No, I have to go, my dog’s outside…” You went to sit up again but his glare sent you leaning back as he walked back over with the glass and placed it on the table besides you.
“I’ll let them in, they can sleep in the workshop. Stay there – I’m serious.” You watched as he headed back towards the staircase and heard his heavy footsteps descending. You suppose it would be nice to close your eyes for a moment. Maybe that’s all you needed, a moment’s rest just to reclaim your strength and clear your head, then you could head home and forget about all this embarrassing incident altogether...
Reyner had got your dog settled downstairs and spied your satchel abandoned next to the stool – maybe there was something in there that could help. He went to pick it up and was immediately surprised by the weight of the thing. Curious, he peeked inside and saw numerous labelled bottles nestled inside, alongside with what looked like your foraging spoils for the day. His respect had grown for you and your work over the past few weeks – that he had to admit. He'd seen you head out early every morning to the fields to collect ingredients. You often didn’t return until the late afternoon, popping into the bathhouse before heading back out again until late. It seemed tireless work, even more so when he considered how ungrateful most of the town had been.
He lifted up your satchel and carried it up the stairs. "So, Chemist, advise your trainee what treatment you require."
He expected a sarcastic retort but none came – you were fast asleep on his bed. He chose his steps wisely as he walked back over to the bed, avoiding the floorboards he knew to be particularly creaky, and placed the satchel down at the end of it. Then, he slowly took it upon himself to unlace your boots and gently removed them, before at last placing the thin blanket over your sleeping form.
 “Rest well, Y/N.”

DAY 27 OF FLUFFTOBER: Outdoor Event
Ship: Darla x Reyner
Words: 512
Tumblr media
It was their anniversary today. Darla and Reyner had planned something simple to do, to celebrate but not something too big.
Reyner arrived at the house of his lover, knocking at the door.
« It’s unlocked! » Darla yelled and Reyner let himself in.
Darla walked to him, giving him a quick kiss.
« Good morning. » She said and he smiled.
« Good morning. » He replied before she turned away back to the kitchen.
« I just need to pack a few more things and I’ll be good to go! » She told him and he nodded.
A few minutes later, she had her basket in hands, putting her shoes.
Reyner hold his hand to grab the basket, taking him from Darla’s hand.
She smiled at that.
« Thank you, my love. » She said and Reyner beamed.
« Let’s go. » He said, leading her to the door.
***
« That’s a really nice spot. I can’t get enough of here. »
As Darla said that, Reyner felt a sense of proudness. Choosing to go to the Moonbury cliff was always a nice choice. Especially as he had asked the other villagers to stay away of the zone for a little while. Not like they had objected to that.
Both of them installed themselves, getting the food out and sharing. They talked and laughed, reminding themselves about the past, their memories together. It felt nice. Being able to take the time like this.
« You did amazing food again, Darla. Thank you. » Reyner said as he took a bite of Darla’s food.
After a while, Darla spoke again.
« … It does feel like home, here. » She admitted, which made Reyner stopped mid-bite, surprised at the statement.
Quickly, Darla explained herself as she noticed his confused expression.
« I mean! I do miss the city. But… » She stopped, trying to find her words.
Reyner finished his bite, still looking at her with surprised eyes. This wasn’t something he expected, as that was said out of nowhere.
« It feels comforting here. It feels like I belong. » She confessed and Reyner felt a smile creeps on him at the confession.
« And, not to be sappy or anything but… I do imagine spending the rest of my life with you at this point. » She let out and Reyner’s cheeks got red.
Darla chuckled at that, giving him a soft kiss on the cheek.
« Aw, don’t get shy like that. » She giggled and he tried to hide his cheeks, hiding his face.
« I-I’m not… » He said and she shook his head, with a big smile.
« We should eat more before Kipps pass by. » She said and Reyner nodded.
He would need to go see the mayor soon. Because if it was really how Darla felt, perhaps it was time to buy something else than a moon brooch. Making them lovers forever. And planning the wedding.
But for now, he would enjoy the food and the time with her. This could wait.

RJ's Platinum Collection #17: Potion Permit
Tumblr media
Achieved on 12/24/2022 at 4:02 PM
So I am a fan of Stardew Valley, and I play that game on-and-off a lot. One day, I was looking at my "Because You Played" recommendations and noticed that Potion Permit was one of the recommendations. It looked cool, and I wanted to try something different, so I decided to buy it - and boy was I not disappointed!
Potion Permit sees you take the role of a young Chemist - I chose the male Chemist and named him Tomas - who is sent from the city to the small country town of Moonbury to become the new resident doctor. However, it turns out that the citizens of Moonbury do not trust Chemists due to an incident in the past that has left the local environment in absolute mayhem. So now it is up to poor little Tomas to not only brew potions to cure the townsfolk of various ailments and earn their trust, but he has to somehow fix all of the disasters that have befallen the local nature.
So my first step for my Platinum journey was to just play the game and have fun. Completing the main quest of the game ended up taking me about 46 hours, during which I got 21 trophies.
1/38: Welcome To Moonbury - Welcome to Moonbury.
2/38: The First Step - Brew your first potion.
3/38: Moonbury Traveller - Use fast travel 20 times.
4/38: Rookie Chemist - Brew potions 15 times.
5/38: K.O.! - Passed out for the first time.
6/38: Friendly - Reach Friendship Level 1 with 5 villagers.
7/38: Great Doctor - Successfully cure 10 patients.
8/38: Dog Whisperer - Reach Friendship Level 3 with your dog.
9/38: The Capitalist - Collect 10,000 coins.
10/38: Intermediate Chemist - Brew potions 50 times.
11/38: Lumber Specialist - Collect 3,000 wood.
12/38: Ablutomaniac - Have a bath in the Willow Waters Bathhouse 10 times.
13/38: Sociable - Reach Friendship Level 2 with 10 villages
14/38: Heart Of Gold - Reach Friendship Level 3 with a villager.
A brief interruption to talk about who I chose to romance. At the time of my playthrough, there were six available love interests (the game has since been updated to include four more), and I was initially gonna go for Matheo, the witch doctor who hated Tomas but is VERY hot, but I ended up getting swept away by the much nicer Reyner, the local carpenter. I still think fondly of him to this day. When I confessed to him, he got so excited he ran into a wooden pole and bumped his head. Silly carpenter man, hehe.
15/38: Spark Of Love - Date an NPC for the first time.
16/38: Community Helper - Clear 25 quests from the Community Board.
17/38: Good Samaritan - Successfully cure 50 patients.
18/38: Catch Of The Day - Go fishing 50 times.
19/38: Stone Specialist - Collect 10,000 stones.
20/38: Fishing Guru - Collect 10 types of fish in Moonbury.
21/38: Expert Chemist - Brew potions 150 times.
Voila! I successfully fixed all the town's problems and became the local hero. After completing the Main Quest, the game basically just lets you do whatever you want, and all I had left to do was grinding.
A. Lot. Of. Grinding.
I started with grinding out ingredients for cooking (it doesn't really offer much status-wise, so I never actually bothered cooking anything during the main quest), and I also got the trophy for helping the Police Department sort ink 15 times.
22/38: Amateur Chef - Cook food 5 times.
23/38: Line Cook - Cook food 15 times.
24/38: Production Sorter - Work part-time in the Police Department 15 times.
25/38: Sous Chef - Cook food 50 times.
26/38: Decorative Mind - Collect 10 pieces of furniture.
At this point I decided to get the trophies for failing to cure patients with your potions out of the way, but I couldn't bring myself to ruin all of Tomas' hard work. So I made a new save file, gave my new Chemist the creative name of Failura, and then basically slept over and over and over until I had successfully failed to cure 10 people.
27/38: Being Forgetful... - Failed to cure a patient for the first time.
28/38: Being A Donut... - Failed to cure 10 patients.
With that done, I returned to my Tomas file and continued with a lot of grinding.
29/38: Animal Lover - Pet your dog 50 times.
30/38: Mail Carrier - Work part-time in the Post Office 15 times.
31/38: Acrobatic Adventurer - Roll 1,000 times.
32/38: Animal Exterminator - Defeat 1,000 enemies.
33/38: Grape Supplier - Work part-time in the Church 15 times.
34/38: Tree Exterminator - Forage 1,000 trees.
35/38: Rock Exterminator - Forage 1,000 stones.
36/38: Plantation Exterminator - Forage 1,000 plants.
37/38: Community Advisor - Clear 75 quests from the Community Board.
Once I completed my 75th Community Board quest, I finally got the Potion Permit Platinum - boy do I love alliteration!
38/38: Moonbury Navigator - Unlock all other trophies.
Potion Permit is a very cozy and fun game, but a lot of the gameplay does get repetitive. I personally think the characters and story make up for that, but it's not worth continuing the game after you finish the main quest and max out all your relationships with each villager, especially if you're trying to Platinum since that requires a LOT of grinding. However, it has received several updates since I last played, so maybe that has changed!

DAY 5 OF FLUFFTOBER: x + 1
Pairing: Darla x Reyner
Words: 1736
A/N: Yes, I am late again so be prepared to have a lot of these prompts coming very quickly in all one shot!
Tumblr media
Arriving in Moonsburry as a chemist had been… a challenge, if Darla had to say it in a polite way. With the way how people didn’t trusted her at all at first, which was understandable due to circumstances, and how she had to gain their trust for weeks before they actually saw her as a part of the village , it had been rough.
But she kept on pushing and pushing, knowing she couldn’t treat people in the best way if they didn’t trust her at least a little. With weeks turning into months, she could now say that she was at least now acquaintances with everyone in the village, getting greetings everywhere she went and being now able to ask for help if needed.
Belonging was hard though. She hadn’t had a place to consider home in years, moving from places to places too often. But perhaps this place would change it all.
She got close to some people in the village, Reyner being one of them. It all started as a patient and chemist relationship, innocently enough.
She walked in the carpenter’s shop on a random Wednesday, after a big storm had hit the village. The realization that the clinic was not made for stormy weather, Darla knew something had to be done about it.
"Hi, Reyner! How have you been lately? Your shoulder is still doing good?" She asked as she entered, a smile on her face.
The carpenter turned to her and offered a smile of his own. She had been helping him for a while now with some quests he had asked and he was thankful for that.
"Hi Darla, yeah, it’s been fine. A little pain again but it’s not as bad as it used to be." He affirmed, trying to ease her mind from the injury he had.
The answer made Darla think for a second.
"Hum… I might have an onguent for that. I’ll try bringing it back here later in the day." She assured before approaching the register.
"There’s really no need to, though, you’ve been pretty busy lately." Tried to dismiss Reyner, not wanting to disturb her. He knew the villagers were already keeping her pretty busy.
"No, no, I can still make time for that! Anyway, I’m here to help for things like that, am I not?" Darla replied with a chuckle and it made the carpenter smile again.
She then shook her head before looking at him.
"This is not why I came to you today though. I was hoping you could help me fix something for the clinic." The chemist asked.
"Sure, I can help with that. What do you need?" Reyner replied, interested by what was going to be asked from him.
"I feel like the roof could be reinforced a bit. With all the big winds these days, I’d rather be more on the safe side." She sighed as she said that and Reyner nodded. She was right, the winds had been pretty hard these last past days.
“Sure, I can do that for sure." He assured and Darla smiled, satisfied.
"Well then, that’s perfect. How much do I owe you for today?" She replied, getting her purse out.
After settling down the price for the renovations and the payment done, Darla prepared herself to leave.
"Whenever you can get to it, just come by the clinic. If I’m not there, just assume that I trust you with the renovations." She said but Reyner replied quickly, as he grabbed his own tools.
"Well, actually, I have time right now if you don’t have anything planned." He proposed and Darla stayed surprised, but still nodded in agreement.
"Oh! Well, sure, that’s perfect for me!" She said and Reyner joined her to the other side of the counter.
"Lead the way." He said and they both walked to the clinic.
Reyner went immediately to work as they arrived, which took not much time as he knew exactly what needed to be done.
A few hours after, both of them discussing a bit between him doing renovations and her making round-trip from her house and the clinic, it was finally done.
"There you go. That should fix it all up." Reyner said, putting his tools back in his box.
"Thank you Reyner, I appreciate it so much." She thanked him, yet still being a bit disappointed by the fact they didn’t had time to finish their conversation. Turns out they had more in common than she thought…
"No problem. I’ll be on my way then." He said back, before grabbing his box and turning to walk back to the carpenter’s shop.
"… Wait a second, actually." She stopped him at the last second, hoping it wouldn’t sound weird. The carpenter turned to her, with a confused look on his face.
"I… do have some coffee or tea if you want to stay so we can continue about what we were talking about. I mean, if you want to. You’ve seem so busy lately, maybe a break wouldn’t be so bad, don’t you think?" She offered, with a shy look, even if she did tried to seem confident.
There was a silence, where Reyner seemed to think, still looking a bit confused. Anxiety started to fill up Darla, who spoke again.
"… I’m sorry, I know this is out of nowher-" She started but got interrupted by the boy.
"Sure. I wouldn’t say no to coffee." He replied, with a small smile.
So it started as just that. Him staying for a while after renovations were done at Darla’s place or at the clinic. Both of them grew closer, spending more and more time together slowly, Darla coming more often to "check on Reyner’s shoulder".
"Hi Reyner! Saw you wanted help for another project, got it here!" She said during one of her other visit she made to his shop, dropping the supplies he needed. He smiled at her, satisfied with what he received.
"You’ve been helping me a lot lately actually… Thanks. I appreciate it." Reyner replied as he put the stuff he just had received in the back before coming back to the counter.
"That’s really no trouble! With all the help you’ve offered for the clinic and the house, it’s only fair." She assured him before adding something in a mumble.
"And perhaps… Spending time with you isn’t so bad."
"I’m sorry, what did you just said? I didn’t hear you clearly…" Reyner questioned, not sure if he had hear correctly or the right thing. The question made Darla a bit flustered as she quickly moved on.
"Oh, nothing to worry about! I’ll see you later!" She replied before quickly walking away and leaving the store, leaving a confused Reyner behind.
What confirmed it all, what changed their relationship status was the day Runeheart asked Darla to come check on Reyner, that he was supposedly sick, which made Darla worried, hoping it wasn’t anything too bad.
She had quickly made her way to Reyner’s shop, where they both were waiting for her, Runeheart updating her on Reyner’s condition as soon as she walked in.
"He said that he’s been unable to sleep ever since you last checked on him. " Runeheart said and Darla’s mind started working.
Could it be insomnia? But what would cause it? The onguent was not supposed to have any side effects like these…
"He also mentioned that his heartbeat has been particularly fast and that he’d lost his appetite." Runeheart kept going as Darla assimilated the information.
Heart problem, maybe? Or stress or anxiety? Maybe the pressure of the job was getting too much? It was also an option.
"And sometimes, he’d felt his chest get kind of warm inside."
That… She wasn’t sure. Cause it didn’t fit the other symptoms. She couldn’t explain this one logically.
"The warmth in my chest is feeling better now…" Reyner said, which angered Runeheart.
"You told me earlier that it was like a burning sensation in your chest!" She protested, which made the carpenter flustered. Runeheart sighed in frustration.
"Spit it out and get to the point!" She said roughly and Reyner hesitated for a second before admitting.
"I guess I’m overthinking. What Darla told me back then… about my shoulders and everything… I thought people from the capital were different…" He started explaining and Darla tried to decipher what he meant.
What had any of this any link to what he described? If it wasn’t a physical problem or a mental one, what could it b- Wait.
Wait.
Runeheart started laughing loudly as Darla’s cheeks got red at the realization.
"That’s not a disease, you donkey! I think you have a crush on Darla!" Runeheart teased and Reyner froze, his own cheeks reddening in embarrassment.
"I’ll leave you two together then." Runeheart said with a smirk on her face, walking to the exit.
"R-Runeheart, wait, I- …oh." Tried Reyner but she was already gone, leaving the two alone.
There was a silence between the twos and Reyner couldn’t look at Darla in the eyes… Until she started laughing, which made him scowl at her reaction.
"I’m sorry, I’m not laughing at you, I promise! I just… Wow. I did not see that coming." She tried to calm her down but it seemed like the carpenter felt even more embarrassed, not saying a word.
As she finally was able to calm down, she approached him, placing a hand on his shoulder softly.
"Hey, don’t be like that… Especially when I’m feeling the same, Reyner." Darla confessed, a bright smile on her face. She noticed Reyner’s eyes widening as he stared at her.
"What? You do?" He asked, full of hope.
"Duh. Why do you think I spent most of my times here?" Darla laughed again and Reyner smiled, chuckling a bit at the realization. Like the pieces of the puzzle were finally placing themselves together after a long time.
"So… How about dinner sometimes?" He suggested and Darla nodded immediately.
"Yeah, I like that idea. Let’s start there, alright?" She proposed, with an excited smile.
It was the moment she realized he was her +1. The last reason she needed to make her belong here. As she bought the moon brooch, a few weeks later, she knew she had made the right decision to stay. She couldn’t help but being giddy at how Reyner would be when she’ll give it to him.
