I heart Posy and am sad she was cut from the movies (Hazelle too)
But it's Posy, Gale's five-year-old sister, who helps the most. She scoots along the bench to Octavia and touches her skin with a tentative finger. “You're green. Are you sick?”
“It's a fashion thing, Posy. Like wearing lipstick,” I say.
“It's meant to be pretty,” whispers Octavia, and I can see the tears threatening to spill over her lashes. Posy considers this and says matter-of-factly, “I think you'd be pretty in any color.” The tiniest of smiles forms on Octavia's lips. “Thank you.”
“If you really want to impress Posy, you'll have to dye yourself bright pink,” says Gale, thumping his tray down beside me. “That's her favorite color.” Posy giggles and slides back down to her mother.
-- "Mockingjay", Suzanne Collins
I shall never forgive the Capitol for using Posy's voice against Katniss in one of the jabberjays in the arena. I don't know why it's worse than using Prim to me. I guess because Posy is a baby. It's just pretend torture but... why would you think torturing a five-year-old is totally normal?

So I know in the age of the Hunger Games renaissance we have a lot of post-war Katniss and Peeta parenting headcanons however, I’d like to take a moment to talk about their FRIENDSHIPS post war new and old because I love them and they deserve the best support systems.
- One of Greasy Sae’s grandchildren, a scrawny dark-haired man, who asks to be apprenticed in Peeta’s bakery since the coal mines are no longer safe to work in. A quiet man, with a lot of love in his heart for iced cakes, since his daughter likes to look at them in wonder through the glass.
- Johanna Mason and Katniss having four-hour long phone calls AT LEAST once a week.
- a poorer capitol couple who always dreamed of life in a smaller town end up buying one of Victor’s Houses. They’re nervous to say the least, but Peeta helps them settle in the town and Katniss eventually helps them to get comfortable in the woods. When their dog has puppies, the couple gifts them two.
- Gale never returns to District 12, but his siblings, Rory and Posy do. A friendship that’s sparked by reminiscing about cold mornings is now fueled by hot summer evenings, and bonfires, and roasted apples and singing.
- Peeta and Katniss visiting Annie in District three and swimming at the beach with her.
- Delly Cartwright rushing to the bakery to relay the gossip she just happened to hear at the post office.
- Haymitch’s house not being in a fit state, so Katniss and Peeta helping him to host his Senior Veterans’s support group at theirs.
- Speaking of veterans, Katniss’s mother visiting with one, a second-hand ring on her finger. He’s from District 11, a towering battle-scarred soldier but his eyes betray the people he’s lost in his time. His gravelly speaking voice would scare away even the tamest birds, but his hands coax rainbows out of the ground and Katniss is proud of her mother for being happy.
Now, I don’t think Katniss would ever get a full time job, with her mental health and Capitol stipend. I also don’t think she would become a doctor or apothecary, like her mother and sister. But in her late years, when she’s too old for hunting and no need for it anyway, I like to imagine she becomes a midwife. Idk, I think she would have a lovely no-nonsense bedside manner and a deep love for every baby she helps deliver and it is nice to think about. I just weep imagining her helping to deliver Posy’s first baby, or checking up on Newborn mothers around the town with gift baskets full of helping herbs and freshly-baked buns and being a familiar face for everyone in 12.

Yellow Flowers
Yellow is associate with hope in The Hunger Games. In the upcoming chapter 4, Katniss will remember eating dandelions and it giving her hope. The dandelions are linked to Peeta in Katniss' mind. He was looking at her when she saw them. (This will come up again in Mockingjay, if we get there.)
The yellow flowers come up again later. "Rue is a small yellow flower that grows in the Meadow. Rue. Primrose," Katniss thinks, explicitly linking Rue and Prim together.
Rue is a yellow shrub that can be decorative or used as an herb. There is "common" primrose and "evening" primrose. I believe Prim was named after evening primrose. It is also yellow and has some medicinal uses which is apt for Prim who wants to be a healer.
It's worth noting that katniss is white but has a yellow center. It's a flower but also edible, making it a bit more functional than rue or primrose (although rue can be used as an herb) to someone like our Katniss who is looking for food always. (Aren't we all?)
There is also one other character who is a yellow flower that Katniss will never explicitly link with hope but has a symbolic function in the novels: buttercup.
Buttercup the Cat is Prim's guardian. He and Katniss never get along but I always thought it was because they were too similar, both prickly and overprotective of Prim. He also prefers the Everdeen's old house in the Seam, like Katniss does, over the house in Victor's Village.
Buttercup is also a survivor. He doesn't die when Katniss attempts to drown him. He makes it through the firebombing of District 12. He somehow makes it back from District 13 to appear in 12 at the end of Mockingjay. Compare this to what Katniss goes through in the novels, how often she escapes death and her own difficult, winding road back to the house in the Victor's Village.
Anyway. TLDR, there are a lot of flower names in THG. I haven't even gotten to Posy (a "posy" is a bouquet of flowers) or Snow's unnatural, genetically engineered roses that are in opposition to the wildflowers like rue and evening primrose.

Posy Hawthorne
The embodiment of the innocence of youth before tainted by prejudice
The covert glances and quiet murmurs I usually evoke are nothing compared to the reaction brought on by the sight of my bizarre-looking prep team. The gaping mouths, the finger pointing, the exclamations. "Just ignore them," I tell my prep team. Eyes downcast, with mechanical move-ments, they follow me through the line, accepting bowls of grayish fish and okra stew and cups of water.
We take seats at my table, beside a group from the Seam. They show a little more restraint than the people from 13 do, although it may just be from embarrassment. Leevy, who was my neighbor back in 12, gives a cautious hello to the preps, and Gale's mother, Hazelle, who must know about their imprisonment, holds up a spoonful of the stew. "Don't worry," she says. "Tastes better than it looks." But it's Posy, Gale's five-year-old sister, who helps the most. She scoots along the bench to Octavia and touches her skin with a tentative finger. "You're green. Are you sick?"
"It's a fashion thing, Posy. Like wearing lip-stick," I say.
"It's meant to be pretty," whispers Octavia, and I can see the tears threatening to spill over her lashes.
Posy considers this and says matter-of-factly, "I think you'd be pretty in any color."
The tiniest of smiles forms on Octavia's lips. "Thank you."
"If you really want to impress Posy, you'll have to dye yourself bright pink," says Gale, thumping his tray down beside me. "That's her favorite color." Posy giggles and slides back down to her mother. Gale nods at Flavius's bowl. "I wouldn't let that get cold. It doesn't improve the consistency."

What’s your favourite scene in Mockingjay?
Hello, my friend! Thanks for the asks!! You are the bestest. ❤❤
I'd have to pick the Posy scene in the cafeteria with Octavia:
But it’s Posy, Gale’s five-year-old sister, who helps the most. She scoots along the bench to Octavia and touches her skin with a tentative finger. “You’re green. Are you sick?”
“It’s a fashion thing, Posy. Like wearing lipstick,” I say.
“It’s meant to be pretty,” whispers Octavia, and I can see the tears threatening to spill over her lashes.
Posy considers this and says matter-of-factly, “I think you’d be pretty in any color.” ----------------------------
I mean....
A very close second is this scene:
“That what I need to survive is not Gale's fire, kindled with rage and hatred. I have plenty of fire myself. What I need is the dandelion in the spring. The bright yellow that means rebirth instead of destruction. The promise that life can go on, no matter how bad our losses. That it can be good again. And only Peeta can give me that.”

And c'mon, imagine Posy melting Haymitch's heart!

(Yes, I fancast Agnes from Despicable Me as Posy Hawthorne)
(character ask) 15. What's your favorite ship for Haymitch?
thank you @thesweetnessofspring!! 🧚🏻
send me something for character ask game
Okay, I thought about it for too long. So, here is a stream of consciousness answer based on canon, and I would love to hear what everyone else thinks-- AU or otherwise!
I don’t really like Haymitch and Effie as a romantic couple. I do think that they care more for each other than they outwardly show, but their dynamic is much more compelling as begrudging coworkers.
Maysilee or anyone we know from the Second Quarter Quell generation didn’t sit right either since we know he had a girlfriend at the time he was reaped. The whole thing is so tragic that I had to move on before I got too sad.
Hazelle (who is also QQ generation I guess) is such a strong and resilient character, and I can see her working well with Haymitch. The time she works as a housekeeper for Haymitch also coincides with the time that Haymitch must have been involved with some planning around the rebellion. I would love to read a fic where Hazelle picks up on something (a secret message, a phone call she accidentally picks up, anything 👀) and they bond over the secret they share.
Which would ultimately bring about the Gale question. Katniss always thinks of Haymitch as like her because he is from Seam but Gale seems to set Haymitch apart because he is a victor. It is intriguing to imagine how he must have felt like once his mom started working for Haymitch, and whether he would feel differently in the event of a romance. So, Hazelle takes the win for me, mainly because I liked where the story could take them and the implications for other characters! Plus a Seam-Seam couple as an adult would be different from the romances we got to see in canon!* *in canon so far because i am always holding on to the hope that SC will write another book & blow me away all over again

She hates it here. Posy wants nothing more than to return home, but instead finds herself stuck in District 2 in the clutches of her older brother, who has taken in the three younger siblings in the wake of their mother's passing. Instead of moving back to their home, he has forced them to uproot and fit into his life, which the eleven year old understands to some degree, but still hates. He keeps preaching that there is nothing left for them in 12, but he fails to understand that it doesn't matter to Posy. It was home and now it is gone, just like their mother. Every good and happy memory she's ever had was back there. Now it feels like she lost everything once again, only this time more profoundly than during the war.
School is another sore topic in their household. At the moment, Posy is the only one who actually goes at times. The boys refuse and only pretend to go, because they think it's a waste of time and they're old enough to find work. Posy disagrees and only skips school, because she feels inferior to the other children. Everyone here seems much more educated than a poor little girl from 12 who went to a mediocre village school for most of her life and whose education was heavily impacted by the war. They don't know what it's like when chairs in the classroom remain empty after a harsh winter, because their occupants have not made it. They don't know what it feels like to starve, or to freeze in their own homes. Posy feels much older and younger than them all at once.
It is market day and she has once again dropped out of school earlier, because she felt sad all day and could not concentrate. She told her teacher she was feeling ill and was sent home, but strolls through the stalls now instead. It looks a little bit like home and it makes her heart ache, but also comforts her. They have markets in 12 that she used to go to and is determined to see again soon. Her eyes roam over the fruits and vegetables offered, before they linger on someone who is selling strawberries. It takes her a long moment to recall who the person might be, but then her face lights up and she hurries over. "Madge! You're Madge Undersee, aren't you? You're from home", she says excitedly, albeit a little confused, because word went around saying that Madge was killed during the war.
@forgaeven asked for Posy

"He was only fourteen, but he cleared six feet and was as good as an adult to me. I’d seen him around the Seam and at school. And one other time. He’d lost his father in the same blast that killed mine. In January, I’d stood by while he received his medal of valor in the Justice Building, another oldest child with no father. I remembered his two little brothers clutching his mother, a woman whose swollen belly announced she was just days away from giving birth." -- Description of Gale Hawthorne, Chapter 8, "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins

"Are you, are you, coming to the three", the ten year old cheerfully sang to herself, as she was making her way down the main road of District 12, or what used to be the main road. The District was still mostly in ruins, even though the people who had survived the war and returned here were doing their best to rebuild it. Posy and her brothers lived in a house that only had half a roof at this point, but it was better than nothing. Their original home had not made it through the bombing, so they could not be choosy. It was better than nothing - a phrase Hazelle repeated ever so often, when the kids complained, or water was dripping from the ceiling. They had made it this far, they would get through yet another tough patch as well.
"Where they strung up a man, they say who murdered three - Katniss!" Her face lit up at the sight of Gale's oldest friend, before it immediately fell again, when she remembered that these two were no longer friends and that probably extended to the rest of the Hawthornes as well. Unfortunately, she had called out loud enough to get the older girl's attention, so there was no way out of the situation. This was awkward. Katniss had been like an older sister to Posy all her life, but now everything was different. A war changed a lot of things, it seemed, most of all people. "Hello", she greeted more timidly, not sure what else to say. She had not seen Katniss since District 13 and that was...over a year ago.
@denydefeat liked for a starter from Posy

Posy didn't know what sea turtles were, but the way Finnick spoke of them made her fairly certain that she would love them as well. Now she really wanted to go to the ocean and see all of it; the water, the sun, the fish and creatures living in it. None of those things were within reach for children from 12. She had grown up surrounded by poverty, coal dust and corrupt peacekeepers. Now they didn't even know how much of 12 was left to go back to, if anything. Posy remembered the bombs vividly and wasn't sure anything could have survived that fire from above.
She grinned contently when Finnick declared that he would teach her how to swim after the war. That was a great prospect and Posy was sure she could learn it easily. "I will come visit you, then. It is a good skill to know how to swim. We don't have a lot of water, but still - maybe one day i'll be in need of surviving like that", she said with a shrug, because survival instinct was drilled into her very bones from day one. Everything in 12 had been potentially life threatening. The poverty, the Peacekeepers, the pollution, the lack of hygiene, the weather - children learned early on what it meant to be on guard, always watchful, always assessing potential threats. They were also used to people disappearing during winters, or periods of famine.
Finnick's tears were hard to read for the girl, but he didn't seem very sad, so she guessed he was just happy. "What is mentally unstable", she asked curiously, because she had never heard that, maybe she had it too? Who knew what weird sicknesses you could get during the war. "Is that infectious?" The notion to fun made her huff, because how was she supposed to enjoy herself here in this sterile underground bunker of a shit hole? "I don't think the people here know how to spell fun. I do. Mostly because it's a short word, but still." Posy wasn't good in school, but no one had ever expected her to be. It was hard to concentrate with an empty belly and many days she stayed home to help her mother, so they could make money. That was the reality of many kids from 12, though sometimes she felt under educated due to that.
It was forgetable, how little the outside districts were known to people. His love for the ocean, the light-colored beach sand darkening as the waves crashed into it leaving just the foaming residue and gifts of seaweed or seashells was unknown to the girl. It was the same for him, though, not knowing much of the District she came from, the very same one where Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark rose from the ashes in a firey victory. His knowledge only extended to the production of coal, the dreary dusted vision the camera had on the children during the Reaping.
"The water," He began, unable to stop himself from looking past the girl, past the cafeteria walls as he drew up the memory of the water, the sound of the waves in his ears. "On the best days when the sun is high in the sky, it's cool but with a touch of warmth where you never want to leave. And there is more sea creatures besides dolphins but the dolphins are pretty as they swim farther out together, like a family. I prefer the sea turtles, though, they're my favorite."
Talking of home made his heart ache but but it was a nice outlet, to share his home with someone who did not know of it. It made the memories of what he may never see again, golden in his eyes. It showed that through everything, he had those happy memories mixed in that he could call back to when a buzz of bliss was needed.
He did not have an hope of ever going back to District Four. The end of this rebellion, the war, seemed too far away to even picture a happy ending of peace. Even with that, the Capitol had been doign a number on the districts that could quite possibly become beyond repair after everything was over. Though, Posy brought up going to Four to see for herself what he had described and maybe that gave him some light at the end of the tunnel. "When you come visit, I'll teach you how to swim." Finnick assured the young girl. "I'm a great swimmer so I'll be the best teacher for you." He focused on the light-hearted talk rather than the hope Katniss had discussed with this girl of the future the rebellion would bring.
Why was it that he had become teary eyed now? He was laughing and yet his eyes were threatening to let go of tears that clung to the edge of his eyelids, coating his bottom lashes. "The most invincible duo." He responded with a couch at the end. His throat began to swell up like he may not be able to speak again. Without an exaggeration, he moved his hand up running it along his cheek and up to wipe away the wettness of his eyes. "They haven't allowed me to do much yet. I'm still mental unstable." Finnick raised his arm shaking the hospital bracelet he wore on his wrist. Possibly a little too honest of words, but if she asked he would lighten the context of the words. "You're lucky that your mother said no. A ten year old like you should be focused on having fun rather than working especially for these people."
