The Hunger Games, 2012 (Gary Ross) and The Hunger Games, 2008 (Suzanne Collins)
It's so interesting that, from the very beginning, Gale is established as someone who has a disregard for human life, and who does not truly view those different from him as "people." We see this here, where he dehumanises the children Katniss will have to fight in the Games. We see this in Gale's vocal resentment of Madge Undersee, in how he despises her for the privilege she was born with and grew up with.
This "us vs. them" infighting and mentality that Gale falls for (a mentality that the Capitol propagates, and that the Games act as a metaphor for) is one that eventually leads him to kill innocent children.
This thinking is also something Katniss must learn to break out of -- when she grapples with killing her opponents in the Games, who are truly just children, or when she realises "who the real enemy is" at the end of Catching Fire.
But Gale is unable to grow past this. He's willing to kill children (!) who are innocents, who haven't committed any crime other than being born in the wrong place at the wrong time -- just like Madge, who Gale despised in Book 1.
And Gale obviously DOES feel bad about "killing" Prim. But what's worse is the thought that, if it wasn't Prim who died, if it was just some random faceless people, would Gale still care?
I think Gale is a really interesting character whose development is so tragic yet still makes so much sense. It's a shame to see people write him off so quickly without seeing the analytical, thematic, and political value that we can gain by exploring his story and ideology.

I heart Posy and am sad she was cut from the movies (Hazelle too)
But it's Posy, Gale's five-year-old sister, who helps the most. She scoots along the bench to Octavia and touches her skin with a tentative finger. “You're green. Are you sick?”
“It's a fashion thing, Posy. Like wearing lipstick,” I say.
“It's meant to be pretty,” whispers Octavia, and I can see the tears threatening to spill over her lashes. Posy considers this and says matter-of-factly, “I think you'd be pretty in any color.” The tiniest of smiles forms on Octavia's lips. “Thank you.”
“If you really want to impress Posy, you'll have to dye yourself bright pink,” says Gale, thumping his tray down beside me. “That's her favorite color.” Posy giggles and slides back down to her mother.
-- "Mockingjay", Suzanne Collins
I shall never forgive the Capitol for using Posy's voice against Katniss in one of the jabberjays in the arena. I don't know why it's worse than using Prim to me. I guess because Posy is a baby. It's just pretend torture but... why would you think torturing a five-year-old is totally normal?

Even the follow up to that godforsaken "Gale was a revolutionary king! Prim's death was unnecessary!" post made no damn sense and missed the point of the series entirely:
“We didn’t need Prim’s death for us to know that Coin was bad and that war was bad! It was senseless!”
That’s the point. Her death was senseless. It had no meaning.
There was no reason for her to die, but these things happen in war. Suzanne Collins herself said that she always knew that Prim was going to die even when she started writing the books.
“Having Gale, an oppressed Brown person, be held responsible for Prim’s death (a White character constantly representing innocence), was ugly when he didn’t even kill her. It was a convenient way to end the love triangle and leaving Peeta (another White character constantly portrayed as good) as the only option .”
Now, here’s where my opinion will get controversial: read the books without the lens of identity politics and maybe you might understand the point. Now, I’m not saying to ignore the aspects of race completely (there’s a reason why District 11, a district full of Black people, was so heavily policed). But, notice how Collins intentionally never left the race of some characters like Rue and Thresh up for debate. She was explicit in her depictions of POC. While Gale and Katniss could be read as Native coded and therefore POC, Collins herself never made it clear just what their races might be. It was purposefully left ambiguous, left up to the reader’s interpretation.
But, even if we follow your interpretation, Peeta and Gale were never supposed to be “good vs bad”. Peeta, probably due to a life that was a bit more privileged than Katniss and Gale’s, represented diplomacy in the just-war debate. Gale, understandably due to his life experiences, tended toward violent remedies. A lot of us do not blame Gale for his rage nor his violence because, again, violence was necessary for revolution. The only thing that went wrong is that his rage began to know no bounds and he began to disregard the humanity of other people, which was exploited by Coin.
Gale had always had a tendency to dehumanize other people: in Book 1, when Katniss was expressing worries about killing people in the arena and he said “it’s just like killing animals, how different can it be, really?” All throughout Book 3 (and even in parts of Book 2), he and Katniss experienced disagreements when it came to what was justifiable during war. Him having the idea to bury the people in the mines when that is the same thing that killed his father, him not understanding why Katniss would care about the fact that her prep team was being tortured for stealing food (when Gale was whipped for poaching), and him helping to develop a weapon that essentially weaponizes human compassion (one bomb that draws people to the wounded, another that kills them all). It is the idea behind the weapon that killed her sister. Of course she was going to connect Prim’s death to Gale even though it wasn’t his fault.
Katniss said herself that Gale’s anger was not what she needed to heal after the war because she had enough of it herself.
And not every Brown man depicted in the series was “rageful and violent”. Katniss’ father, someone that could arguably be Brown, was a source of joy for Katniss, a source of life. It was through his teachings, through his musicality, that not only kept Katniss alive, but also aided Katniss in maintaining her humanity and connect with other people (singing for Rue, singing for Pollux, how Peeta ended up falling for Katniss.)
"The books are about war blah blah blah but at the end of the day, the theme of Mockingjay was that the oppressed fighting back will be just as bad as the oppressors and blinded by rage and hatred! What type of message is that?"
Again, The Hunger Games was not meant to be a story on “how to lead a revolution”. It was a story about war: what consistutes a war, what is justifiable during war, how do we maintain our humanity during war, etc. Collins used the "oppressed vs the oppressor" to create a conflict that would require a revolution and then war. However, during this war, innocent men, women, and children on both sides of the war died senselessly. The message it was sending was not “both sides bad", but that even during a justified war, living in a world where war is necessary is not beneficial to anyone. It was anti-war, not anti-oppressed-fighting-back. That’s the message it was sending.
Please critique the books for what they are and not what you wished them to be.

"Catching Fire", Chapter 8
Part 1: The Spark
Chapter 8: Gale is being whipped by the new Head Peacekeeper. Katniss instintively jumps in and gets a lash across the face. Haymitch comes to their rescue. With the help of some miners, they bring Gale to Katniss' mom, who takes care of him. Katniss and her mom fight about what painkillers to give Gale. Madge brings "morphling" over despite a snowstorm. Katniss doesn't like the idea of Gale and Madge being together. She doesn't like the idea of Gale being with an imaginary girl he won the Hunger Games with. She is mad at herself and vows to stay and fight.
Thoughts:
-- Katniss notes an "odd accent" from Thread. It made me wonder if he is from District 2, because we will learn a lot of Peacekeepers come from there in the next book. Unclear.
-- Poor Darius. He's always having something bad happen to him off the page.
Quotes:
Maybe we're it. The only three people in the district who could make a stand like this. Although it's sure to be temporary. There will be repercussions. But at the moment, all I care about is keeping Gale alive.
I wonder if other Victors have used this authority in other ways, although I am not sure what would be allowed. I would sure like to see a district other than 12.
When a sick or dying person is brought to her … this is the only time I think my mother knows who she is.
This made me think about how Katniss lost the will to fight when she didn't have Rue or Peeta to look after in the Arena. Katniss and her mother are both Caretakers without much ambition of their own. (I don't mean that in a bad way, especially when compared to Snow who seeks power relentlessly.)
Life in District 12 isn't really so different from life in the arena. At some point, you have to stop running and turn around and face whoever wants you dead. The hard thing is finding the courage to do it. Well, it's not hard for Gale. He was born a rebel. I'm the one making an escape plan.
I feel like Katniss is being too hard on herself. Fight and flight (and freeze) are instinctive reactions. Which is the most appropriate response depends entirely on the situation. And I don't think either Gale or Katniss know that much to make that determination yet.
Thank goodness Haymitch is here, honestly. I guess I'm an old lady now but these teenagers are being quite dramatic.

I think about how the hunger games trilogy was the best dystopian fiction written in this generation but it was reduced to a discourse about Team Peeta or Team Gale. Due to this society has never really taken young girls seriously even though the book was about how corrupt the government was in taking advantage of it's citizens.

You gingerly plucked the small black-colored berries from the bush, treating them delicately to not squish them with your fingers. The forest felt tranquil, with only the occasional hum of a tune of a mockingjay flying overhead or the soft rustling of an animal in the brush. There'd been a time when venturing into the forest frightened you but most days, you preferred it, even if it meant missing out on some quality time with your two childhood friends, Gale Hawthrone and Katniss Everdeen.
But after the 74th Hunger Games, you'd begun to regret not spending more time with Katniss.
You barely saw her after her return from those wretched games where she'd been forced to go from an animal hunter to a human one. You believed in her, of course you did. You'd seen her ups and downs, her breakdowns, the way she pushed forward to keep her family safe and afloat. You saw the brave and caring girl underneath her tough and quiet exterior. She'd taken a risk with the nightlock berries, all to save a boy she hardly knew because he'd been kind to her. And in doing so, she made all of Panem believe the two were madly in love.
Gale - after all was said and done and she was back home safe in 12 - thought it'd been hilarious. Katniss had never even so much as held hands with a boy, let alone been in a relationship with one. Yet, there she was, pretending to be head over heels for the baker's boy. Gale laughed whenever he saw her, even when she gave him that silent deadpan Everdeen stare, and teased her relentlessly over her fabricated relationship with the meek blonde.
"I bet lover boy misses you, Catnip," He'd whispered during one nice Sunday evening while out in the woods. The skin around his hands and arms remained tinted black from working in the mines, no matter how hard he tried scrubbing them clean. "I bet he wants to give you a kis-"
"Shut up, Gale," Katniss had huffed in return, her cheeks and ears flushed in a soft pink. "You're going to scare the animals."
You hadn't yet figured out if it bothered you or not. Their relationship was fake, sure, but Panem believed otherwise. How long until they'd be urged to marry or have children? Would there be repercussions if they 'broke up'? Would the Capitol have them killed without the relationship protecting them? Those questions swam around in your mind as you finished plucking one last berry and plopping it in your bag.
Your ears picked up the soft crunching of leaves behind you, too gentle to be an animal but too calculated to be anyone other than Gale or Katniss. You tied up the bag and carefully set the berries inside of your bag, listening to the crunching come to a stop as you rose and dusted off your knees. You turned around, expecting to see a grinning Gale with a handful of game but instead, you looked right into the gray eyes of the Girl on Fire.
"Kitty Kat," You murmured the same nickname you'd been using for her since childhood, back when you'd seen firsthand how much she and Buttercup despised each other. Once upon a time, she'd roll her eyes at the nickname, now she smiled, albeit rather awkwardly. You hated the awkwardness, the distance, the uncertainty of where your friendship stood. She had a new life now, a new home, enough money to keep half of 12 from starvation, a new boyfriend. Not to mention, she'd largely avoided you the first couple of weeks of her return. You chalked it up to her getting readjusted to life in 12 but then Gale had mentioned how strange it was given that she'd been fine with hanging out with him.
"Gale said you come out here alone a lot now, with him in the mines and busy at home." She said, adjusting the bow slung over her shoulder. "I thought I'd join you and see if we can catch anything."
"We can wait til Gale's free." You responded. "He'll probably drop by before his date with Madge."
'No, I... I want us to spend time together alone. I hardly get time with you-"
"And whose fault is that, Katniss?" You huffed and the girl visibly flinched, eyes widening. "You don't get to ignore my existence until you want something. That's not how this friendship works. If you want to go back to how things were when we first met, then just say that. I wouldn't want to cause trouble between you and your sweetheart if that's the problem."
"You know nothing is going on between Peeta and I, (Y/N). It was for the audience. For the Capitol. Without it, I might've died, you know that." Katniss snapped, and there was that fiery temper of hers. "I had to keep my distance! I had to- to be sure you wouldn't get hurt, (Y/N)! You know how much it killed me to not be there? To not talk to you for weeks 'cause I was scared something would happen to you? You have no idea the lengths I would go through to keep you safe from the Capitol, from President Snow."
"Why would you need to do that? Nobody's said a word about the hunting, much less to the damn Capitol."
"Because you're not just my best friend, you're my-" She abruptly cut herself, the tips of her ears turning a deep shade of red. Katniss shook her head, her stare directed at the leaf-covered ground as her hands curled into fists. "Nevermind. Forget I said anything." She breathed, brushing away locks of raven hair and turning around to leave."
"I'm your what, Katniss? Don't do that. Stop leaving me in the dark and just say it already." You moved forward, cutting her off before she could trek back to the fence and go back to acting strange around you. Katniss refused to look at you and instead focused her attention on different things around the forest until you brought your hand to her face and forced her to look you in the eye. "Spit it out, Katniss. You know I don't like stuff like this."
Katniss took in a deep breath and released it in a shaky sigh. "I know I'm not supposed to have feelings for you, but I do. And- And I hate it 'cause if anyone finds out, who knows what the Capitol will do to you or my family or even Peeta. I was going to tell you on Reaping Day but... I couldn't. I didn't know what to say and by the time I did, I was already heading to the Capitol. Nobody knows. Not Haymitch or Peeta or Gale.. I can't risk it. I can't risk you."

Mockingjay spoilers
Katniss's inner thoughts about Prim
I look at my little sister and think how she has inherited the best qualities our family has to offer: my mother's healing hands, my father's level head, and my fight. There's something else there as well, something entirely her own. An ability to look into the confusing mess of life and see things for what they are. Is it possible she could be right? That Peeta could return to me?
Later this same chapter:
This is what they've [Gale and Beetee] been doing. Taking the fundamental ideas behind Gale's traps and adapting them into weapons against humans. Bombs mostly.

Can you discuss the two of them both have a rebellious side? I feel like their distinct hatred of the Capitol would be a huge starting off point for the two of them :)
YES! This is something so core to both of them and something that they both explicitly share canonically, even if we never see them interact talking about it.
The both of them have been hurt in very deep, traumatic ways by the Capitol and their eagerness for retribution is a natural reaction. It is very easy to see that being something they very quickly relate to and understand in one another. Something they are quick to bond over.
An interesting spin to this though, is what would that look like AFTER the rebellion wins? What happens when they find someone angry and hurt after the object of their anger has been defeated? This is why my prefeed Johale headcanon is that Johanna finds Gale after the end of MJ, and these two angry people find comfort in knowing they aren't the only one still harboring these negative feelings. But through finding someone who accepts and even share these feelings, they begin to find out they can't live in them forever.
They start to work through them, cope in better and healthier ways.
And together, they find they can use all that want for justice and retribution REALLY well rebuilding. Forming a better thing out of the ashes.

by f10_2610
As a way to make the District's seem even more inhumane and sperate from the Capitol, the water supplies of Districts 1 through 13 were spiked with a radioactive substance developed in Capitol labs. If a person carrying a pregnancy was exposed to it, their unborn child had a chance to be born with abilities beyond any normal child.
Every year, twelve boys and twelve girls with superhuman abilities are reaped to appear in an annual event called The Hunger Games. There is only one rule: kill, or be killed. When twelve year old Willow Atlas is reaped for the Hunger Games, she is expected to be picked off in the bloodbath, like a weed. They had no idea how poisonous a little weed could be.
