Summary: Your first gala after winning the Games is overwhelming. Katniss is there for you, and not just because the Capitol thinks you're in love.

Lights twinkled across the room as you sat at a table, nursing a drink that was probably more expensive than most of the clothes you owned. A sick part of your brain would almost rather be at the Games, because at least there people said what they meant, and if they tried to kill you it was easier to see them coming. Here, all those attacks came in the form of trying statements and pitying tones. 

You didn’t want to be here. You shouldn’t be here. But this was the price you paid to walk out of that arena, and you were starting to wonder if the future was even worth it. You had tricked the gamemakers into letting you walk away, and you would spend the rest of your life being reminded of it. 

A hand gently resting on your shoulder pulled your thoughts back to the present, and you turned to see Katniss Everdeen standing before you. Your fellow “guest of honor” at the gala, the two of you had entered an unspoken agreement for this evening. Everyone here believed that you were in love, and there was no choice but to play along. 

“You look like you need some air,” she said, and if you had to guess, you would say that the statement applied to her just as much as it did you. 

You nodded. “If you find us a way to escape, I’m all in.” 

Katniss smiled, and you could see the pain behind her eyes, that you were sure could be registered in your expression as well. “It’s not a full escape, but I found a place.” 

You reached up to take her hand as you pulled yourself out of the chair, leaving your drink to be forgotten on the table. “I’ll take it.” 

You didn’t know if anyone was watching as you and Katniss left the ballroom, and if they were, you hoped that they simply believed you to be sneaking off for some intimate privacy. People would be okay with that here, especially if they believed the two of you would soon make regular appearances in the Capitol’s gossip magazines. 

The courtyard was bare when you stepped past a gorgeously carved archway, in more ways than one. Not only were there no partygoers here, but the places where you felt there should be plants and flowers were just empty, or the flora had been pruned so far back that they looked on the verge of death. Something could be said here, about the Capitol and its need to control to the point of destruction, but you were too overwhelmed from the gala to actually string the words together. 

As you and Katniss sat down on a bench, your head rested naturally on her shoulder. It was a holdover from the games, where you did anything and everything to showcase the lie you were selling, to get everyone to believe how in love the two of you were, and you quickly sat up straight once you realized what you had done. 

“Is everything okay?” she asked. 

“Yeah,” you breathed, trying not to let on that your response was a lie. “I just- we aren’t being watched out here or anything.” 

Katniss reached down to take your hand once more. “You don’t have to stay away from me all the time,” she said, and you could tell that she wanted to say something else, but was keeping it in for whatever reason. “We’re in this together.” 

You nodded, slowly returning your head to where it had just been resting. Something about this felt so natural, as much as the genesis of the relationship had been nothing but a game to win over hearts and minds. You would be with her for the rest of your lives here, a selfish part of you wondered if the act you played out for the Capitol cameras would someday become real. “I like the sound of that,” you said softly, staring out at the scene before you. “No matter what happens, we’ll get through it together.” 

Neither of you may have been strong enough to admit your feelings right there, but they were present. The word together was enough of an admission for now, as you sat in comfortable silence and enjoyed this quiet moment of escape with her.

You gingerly plucked the small black-colored berries from the bush, treating them delicately to not squish them with your fingers. The forest felt tranquil, with only the occasional hum of a tune of a mockingjay flying overhead or the soft rustling of an animal in the brush. There'd been a time when venturing into the forest frightened you but most days, you preferred it, even if it meant missing out on some quality time with your two childhood friends, Gale Hawthrone and Katniss Everdeen. 

But after the 74th Hunger Games, you'd begun to regret not spending more time with Katniss.

You barely saw her after her return from those wretched games where she'd been forced to go from an animal hunter to a human one. You believed in her, of course you did. You'd seen her ups and downs, her breakdowns, the way she pushed forward to keep her family safe and afloat. You saw the brave and caring girl underneath her tough and quiet exterior. She'd taken a risk with the nightlock berries, all to save a boy she hardly knew because he'd been kind to her. And in doing so, she made all of Panem believe the two were madly in love. 

Gale - after all was said and done and she was back home safe in 12 - thought it'd been hilarious. Katniss had never even so much as held hands with a boy, let alone been in a relationship with one. Yet, there she was, pretending to be head over heels for the baker's boy. Gale laughed whenever he saw her, even when she gave him that silent deadpan Everdeen stare, and teased her relentlessly over her fabricated relationship with the meek blonde. 

"I bet lover boy misses you, Catnip," He'd whispered during one nice Sunday evening while out in the woods. The skin around his hands and arms remained tinted black from working in the mines, no matter how hard he tried scrubbing them clean. "I bet he wants to give you a kis-"

"Shut up, Gale," Katniss had huffed in return, her cheeks and ears flushed in a soft pink. "You're going to scare the animals."

You hadn't yet figured out if it bothered you or not. Their relationship was fake, sure, but Panem believed otherwise. How long until they'd be urged to marry or have children? Would there be repercussions if they 'broke up'? Would the Capitol have them killed without the relationship protecting them? Those questions swam around in your mind as you finished plucking one last berry and plopping it in your bag.

Your ears picked up the soft crunching of leaves behind you, too gentle to be an animal but too calculated to be anyone other than Gale or Katniss. You tied up the bag and carefully set the berries inside of your bag, listening to the crunching come to a stop as you rose and dusted off your knees. You turned around, expecting to see a grinning Gale with a handful of game but instead, you looked right into the gray eyes of the Girl on Fire.

"Kitty Kat," You murmured the same nickname you'd been using for her since childhood, back when you'd seen firsthand how much she and Buttercup despised each other. Once upon a time, she'd roll her eyes at the nickname, now she smiled, albeit rather awkwardly. You hated the awkwardness, the distance, the uncertainty of where your friendship stood. She had a new life now, a new home, enough money to keep half of 12 from starvation, a new boyfriend. Not to mention, she'd largely avoided you the first couple of weeks of her return. You chalked it up to her getting readjusted to life in 12 but then Gale had mentioned how strange it was given that she'd been fine with hanging out with him.

"Gale said you come out here alone a lot now, with him in the mines and busy at home." She said, adjusting the bow slung over her shoulder. "I thought I'd join you and see if we can catch anything."

"We can wait til Gale's free." You responded. "He'll probably drop by before his date with Madge."

'No, I... I want us to spend time together alone. I hardly get time with you-"

"And whose fault is that, Katniss?" You huffed and the girl visibly flinched, eyes widening. "You don't get to ignore my existence until you want something. That's not how this friendship works. If you want to go back to how things were when we first met, then just say that. I wouldn't want to cause trouble between you and your sweetheart if that's the problem."

"You know nothing is going on between Peeta and I, (Y/N). It was for the audience. For the Capitol. Without it, I might've died, you know that." Katniss snapped, and there was that fiery temper of hers. "I had to keep my distance! I had to- to be sure you wouldn't get hurt, (Y/N)! You know how much it killed me to not be there? To not talk to you for weeks 'cause I was scared something would happen to you? You have no idea the lengths I would go through to keep you safe from the Capitol, from President Snow."

"Why would you need to do that? Nobody's said a word about the hunting, much less to the damn Capitol."

"Because you're not just my best friend, you're my-" She abruptly cut herself, the tips of her ears turning a deep shade of red. Katniss shook her head, her stare directed at the leaf-covered ground as her hands curled into fists. "Nevermind. Forget I said anything." She breathed, brushing away locks of raven hair and turning around to leave."

"I'm your what, Katniss? Don't do that. Stop leaving me in the dark and just say it already." You moved forward, cutting her off before she could trek back to the fence and go back to acting strange around you. Katniss refused to look at you and instead focused her attention on different things around the forest until you brought your hand to her face and forced her to look you in the eye. "Spit it out, Katniss. You know I don't like stuff like this."

Katniss took in a deep breath and released it in a shaky sigh. "I know I'm not supposed to have feelings for you, but I do. And- And I hate it 'cause if anyone finds out, who knows what the Capitol will do to you or my family or even Peeta. I was going to tell you on Reaping Day but... I couldn't. I didn't know what to say and by the time I did, I was already heading to the Capitol. Nobody knows. Not Haymitch or Peeta or Gale.. I can't risk it. I can't risk you."

・You were never reaped, and never knew the personal/immediate experience of having to kill someone. However, your oldest brother was in the Hunger Games, a few years after Johanna. So, you knew the pain of losing a loved one. 

・Helping each other transition into a world where the Hunger Games no longer exists

・In a world where the Capitol doesn’t rule with an iron fist 

・After the events of Coin’s death, Katniss and Peeta go to district 12 to live out their days in peace

・Johanna still plagued by the torture and trauma she endured, didn’t know what to do. 

・No family, no friends, so she hid herself in the apartment that Commander Paylor gave to her (all living victors were given an apartment. But the catch was that they had to go through therapy)

・Johanna refused to go to the appointments. She was adamant that it was stupid, it wouldn’t help. 

・And she drowned in her own sadness 

・It took her 3 months to begrudgingly go to an appointment

・It was a group therapy session. Katniss and Peeta weren’t there as they lived in District 12 and didn’t live off of Paylor’s generosity

・It was a small group, and when Johanna looked around at the other victors, she saw herself. Hurt. Broken...the feeling of something that was taken and they could never get it back

・You were apart of the healers. Not a therapist, but a protegee underneath Ms Everdeen - yes, Katniss’ mother

・She shined in the Capitol; given the best treatment for everything she suffered 

・And you were lucky enough to be her assistant. 

・Learning the art of healing wasn’t easy

・But the opportunity was too good to let pass by 

・Ms Everdeen was a quiet woman, but when she taught, there was a light that began to shine. With each comment, lesson, tutorial and experience - she began to glow and glow. 

・But you soon learnt that bringing up either of her daughters was... bad. Her light dimmed whenever their names were mentioned; even talking about the plants was difficult for her. 

・She loved Prim, her youngest who looked like her. Who never judged her, only had love in her heart for everyone. Katniss was so distant, it felt like a death

・Johanna felt safe with Ms Everdeen. It was an interesting dynamic. She somewhat... stepped into a maternal role for the young victor. A role that Johanna desperately wanted filled but would never admit

・That’s how you met Johanna; in all her hardened exterior. Someone unloved but not unlovable. 

・Your relationship started off very clumsily; she saw you as another therapist - therefore an enemy. 

・You didn’t take much of a liking to her either 

・It was a conscious effort to be curteous 

・And Ms Everdeen pushed you toward Johanna

・Call it a mother’s intuition 

・And that intuition spurred a tight friendship. Johanna eased into your company (not without a fight) 

・You showed her moments into your world and in response, she displayed glimpses into her own

・And then you formed a tight bond. Best friends. Always doing things together, eating, spending all your free time with her

・You even inspired her to go to the therapy appointments 

・And although there were a few hiccups along the way, Johanna started to heal

・From then on she wanted to know what this new world had to offer

・ You both explored what the new Panem was, how Paylor had changed the old ways into something new. A united nation, where everyone reaped the benefits of food, shelter and safety. 

・There were no games after the rebellion. Paylor made sure of that:

   “We didn’t let people sacrifice their lives for a world where we go on sacrificing. We are one now. Panem will never be the same.” 

・Now with a new sense of freedom, you saw a change in Johanna. You knew what it was - hope

・This newfound hope made Johanna realise that ... she could do whatever she wanted. There wasn’t a reason why she couldn’t. She had survived. 

・The very next hour, she had walked right up to you and kissed you fiercely 

・It wasn’t the best place to snog; right in front of Ms Everdeen, but when you pulled apart you glimpsed over at her and saw her smile 

・Being with Johanna is like the like winter. Having a fire to keep yourself warm is cosy but when it gets out of hand - it will leave you with nothing but ashes. 

・You moved in together, a three bedroom apartment that wasn’t too far from Ms Everdeen’s place. You both felt too guilty leaving her.

・Once there was a time that you invited Peeta and Katniss to come and stay, but Peeta wrote back that Katniss wasn’t ready. 

・As a partner, Johanna is hot-headed but also playful and teasing

・She loves ruffling your feathers (never too much though, she never wants to push you away)

NOTE: i haven’t read the books or watched the movies in ages, so please excuse any mistakes.  anon i hope you like this! 

You felt like there should be some dramatic music playing.  Maybe The Smiths.  You felt like there should be a camera zoomed in on your face, focused on the exhausted breaths escaping your lips and the fear painted in your irises.  

You thought that time should slow down, that’s what everyone says right?  That time seems to grind to a halt when you are having a meeting with death?  You felt like bright, fluorescent lights should suddenly turn on and illuminate the dark, water-filled tunnel you sprinted through and the lizard-human mutations should stop and take off their heads to reveal human actors underneath.  You felt like someone should appear through an adjacent tunnel and call the scene.  

But no lights came on and the mutts never halted their approach.  No dramatic music played and no one said that it was all just CGI, that this was fake.  And this terrifying world did not slow down for you, time was not hindered.  In fact, it seemed like everything was moving too fast and your brain could not catch up.  

You had been joking quietly with Finnick as the group stopped in one of the drier tunnels to rest.  District 13 had sent a team to infiltrate President Snow’s mansion through the sewers and you and Finnick had volunteered, and you had known the risks.  Now, that moment seemed centuries past.  

You were flung back, nearly falling as one of Katniss Everdeen’s exploding arrows connected with one of the lizard mutts.  You could just barely see the person in front of you in the strobing light of the flashlight on the tip of your gun.  Sewer water sloshed beneath your feet and your fingernails dug into the palms of your hands.  You could hear the screams of someone you had just been sitting next to you behind you. 

Your chest heaved as you broke into a wider cavern, multiple tunnels branching off of it.  The cavern was better lit with small golden lights hanging from the ceiling and paired with the fires in the tunnel you came from, your eyes had to blink to adjust.  

Heart beating wildly, you spun around, trying to spot Finnick in the chaos.  Mutts were jumping on your teammates while other members of the squad were scrambling up the ladder to the surface.  

You thought you had caught a fleeting glimpse of Finnick’s golden hair, but before you could move you were thrown off balance by a body ramming into your side.  You, and whatever had collided with you, fell into the sewer water, effectively muffling the sounds of strife above.  You jabbed the butt of your gun upwards and it caught on what felt like the jaw of a mutt.  

Your eyes burned as you opened them underwater as you struggled to break the surface before you ran out of air.  Above you, you saw blurry blobs of orange and red.  

Water filled your mouth as you gasped, feeling sharp claws drag down the length of your thigh.  You kicked with your good leg but the mutt didn’t budge and you felt panicky when you realised there was no hope of breathing.  

In a disorientated haze, you broke the surface, someone dragging you up by the strap of your backpack.  The mutt lay bloated and unmoving in the water.  You were dropped unceremoniously on one of the raised patches of concrete before whoever was carrying you collapsed next to you.  They crawled over to you and hit your chest hard, causing you to cough up the water that you had inhaled.  Blinking, the fog from your eyes, you saw Peeta Mellark hovering over you.  You nodded to him in thanks and struggled to stand.  He took the hand you offered him and you hauled him up.    

You saw Finnick struggling to keep a mutt at bay with his trident and you rushed over to him, adrenaline dulling the stinging pain of the gash in your leg.  The machete you wielded found home deep in the head of the mutt as it collapsed against Finnick.  He threw it off to the side and the relief was clear on his face as he saw you in front of him, breathing heavily. 

“Come on!” Katniss’s hoarse voice rang loud over the growls of the mutts.  Katniss was over half way up the ladder and was motioning for you and Finnick to follow her.  

“Let’s go,” you said to Finnick, pushing a hand on his shoulder.  The two of you tripped through the knee-neight water, approaching the ladder back to back.  Finnick cut down any mutts that launched themselves at you from the front and you shot the ones coming from the back.  

“Katniss!” Finnick yelled, you craned your neck to witness Finnick throwing his spear into the back of a mutt that was climbing the ladder after Katniss.  

“Keep going,” you urged, now struggling to shoot the mutts coming from either side.  “Go!  I’m right behind you,” you assured Finnick as you reached the ladder.  Looking at the onslaught of mutts you felt dizzy, maybe the wound on your leg was deeper than you thought.  

You brushed off the feeling in favour of climbing the ladder.  You were only three rungs up when one of the mutts caught your leg, claws digging into your calf.  Before you could completely fall, Finnick grabbed your hand, but you noticed his own fingers slipping from the wet metal of the ladder.  

“Let go, it’s okay,” you told Finnick with a strained smile.  

“No, please no,” Finnick pleaded as you wiggled your hand from his.  

“I love you Finnick.”  Finnick’s chest felt like it was going to split open when he felt your fingers slip from his and he wanted to claw off his ears to stop from hearing your screams.

His mind didn’t register someone pulling at his arm, urging him to keep climbing.  He only seemed to realise that he had come to squat next to Katniss when he watched in horror as Katniss said three cursed words into her Holo. 

“Nightlock, nightlock, nightlock.” 

He screamed and yelled and salty tears ran down his face as the Holo exploded, sending both you and the mutts up in flames.  “It’s not fair!” He yelled, even though his throat was already impossibly dry. 

Finnick’s mind felt crazed and everything seemed too bright.  He didn’t notice Katniss’s voice telling him to calm down, only her arms around him keeping him from launching himself back down the ladder.  He only noticed her keeping him from you. 

“Finnick, listen.  It’s time to go, we have to leave.”   

“It’s not fair.”
