my biggest Worm confession is that if parahumans were real I would be a HUGE Uber and Leet fan.
Pretransition I loved me some problematic gamer boys so gamer boys who also do crime and are cringe fail losers? I’d be all over them. In a heartbeat. Like subbed to the patreon and owning merch kind of fan. Tier 3 sub on twitch kind of fan.
Posttransition? I’m making insane edits of them saying gay shit to each other to ensure that everyone else sees my vision. Just really harping on and writing RPF and being slightly deranged about it. Like Dan and Phil fans used to be.

Side Affects: On Being Trans and Feeling Bad by Hil Malatino
goodreads
Tumblr media
How the “bad feelings” of trans experience inform trans survival and flourishing Some days—or weeks, or months, or even years—being trans feels bad. Yet as Hil Malatino points out, there is little space for trans people to think through, let alone speak of, these bad feelings. Negative emotions are suspect because they unsettle narratives of acceptance or reinforce virulently phobic framings of trans as inauthentic and threatening.  In Side Affects , Malatino opens a new conversation about trans experience that acknowledges the reality of feeling fatigue, envy, burnout, numbness, and rage amid the ongoing onslaught of casual and structural transphobia in order to map the intricate emotional terrain of trans survival. Trans structures of feeling are frequently coded as negative on both sides of transition. Before transition, narratives are framed in terms of childhood trauma and being in the “wrong body.” Posttransition, trans individuals—especially trans people of color—are subject to unrelenting transantagonism. Yet trans individuals are discouraged from displaying or admitting to despondency or despair.  By moving these unloved feelings to the center of trans experience, Side Affects proposes an affective trans commons that exists outside political debates about inclusion. Acknowledging such powerful and elided feelings as anger and exhaustion, Malatino contends, is critical to motivating justice-oriented advocacy and organizing—and recalibrating new possibilities for survival and well-being.
Mod opinion: I haven't heard of this book before, but it sounds like a really interesting addition to trans studies and I'd like to check it out at some point.

Transition and Athletics
Before her own transition in 2004, Harper expected that her 10,000-meter race time might increase by "a minute or two" as her testosterone level dropped and she slowed. But in less than a year, Harper was running a full 5 minutes slower than her personal best. "It just blew me away, and it very much piqued my interest as a scientist."
In 2005, Harper realized her experience wasn't unique after reading an article in Runner's World about another transgender female runner who had also become significantly slower. But when Harper searched for studies about the physiology of transitioning, she found none. So on nights and weekends, she began to moonlight on a research project.
Tumblr media
Harper showed that the athletes' age grades before and after hormone therapy remained nearly the same. That is, the women were as competitive with their age- and sex-matched peers as they had been when competing against men. They weren't, in other words, likely to dominate women's races. "No one had previously looked at actual performance of transgender athletes pre- and posttransition," Vilain says.
Harper has since shown similar results for a transgender rower, a cyclist, and a sprinter. Together, the findings make a case that previous exposure to male levels of testosterone does not confer an enduring athletic advantage.
— "This scientist is racing to discover how gender transitions alter athletic performance—including her own" Science.org
Additionally, the hormone-replacement therapy—which starts before surgery can occur and is taken by many who don’t choose to have surgery—also has a tremendous impact on athletic performance. The extent to which testosterone blockers (given to transgender women in conjunction with estradiol, a form of estrogen) erode a runner’s strength and stamina is hard to measure, says Dr. Wylie Hembree, a New York–based endocrinologist who has been treating transgender patients for 20 years. He says, “Anecdotally, I have had avid runners say to me that they can no longer run the distances and speeds they could run before, and one can presume that that could be due to the reduction in testosterone levels.”
Gapin noticed that despite putting in the same effort, she was running slower, losing a minute or even two per mile fairly soon after starting on hormones. She also experienced a significant decrease in her vitamin D levels (although this is not a common side effect of hormone-replacement therapy), which went undiagnosed for two years and greatly affected her training. “When I started taking supplements to raise my vitamin D levels, I’d get to a point in my running where I’d just be crushing it and running 50 miles a week, and then again, I would plummet to 6 miles, so I was yo-yoing back and forth,” she says.
In the three-plus years she has been on hormones, Liston believes she has lost around 10 percent of her running speed; working her way back up to where she was before is no easy feat. “But I’ve also come to accept some of that as part of aging,” she says. “My body at 47 is different than my body at 40, and despite the hormones—I now wear a B cup—and my stamina being less, I also don’t have the same goals with my running that I used to before my transition, when I was running with anger and frustration. Now, running is much more soothing to me.”
— "Being Transgender and What It Means for a Runner," Women's Running
She used to be able to run 5:30s. Now she can’t. She trains, she pushes herself, she uses everything she has; it doesn’t matter. On the weekend-morning group runs, when serious Marin runners gather near trailheads to pace each other up the dirt roads that climb Tamalpais, Janet starts with the pack, as she has nearly every Saturday and Sunday for 25 years. “Usually there are a lot of guys,” she says. “They start slow. I stay with them for the first mile. Then I start falling away. They’re chatting. They don’t even notice.”
When she was Jim Furman, a 5’11”, 148-pound middle-aged man in excellent physical shape, she kept up.
As Janet Furman Bowman, a 5’11”, 148-pound middle-aged woman in excellent physical shape, she’s too slow.
That, to her astonishment and irritation and unceasing soft regret, is the permanent price she has paid.
— "A 6-Minute Difference," Runner's World

So was nobody going to tell me that My Hero Academia has two canonically transgender characters or was I supposed to find that out on a Wikipedia page of transgender characters in media?

Some little flag pixels in the style of Tr-ee from Deviantart.
Flags in order: Oriented Aroace, Aroace, Posttransition, and Partnered/Partnering.
I made these for my Rentry as badges but I figured others might like them as well. Since the format is so fun, quick, and easy I'm fine with taking requests for them! (I will only do flags that Tr-ee hasn't done since they've made so many already. Please check the archive before requesting!)

I know more about my body than cis people do. Transition got me some more knowledge, too.
Through transition, I have experienced nearly every possible kind of sexed traits. The shape of my chest and crotch, my face and my waist. Endocrine and surgical transition means to have seen and felt it all, so to speak. I have a broad knowledge of how my body really is, what I like about it, what changed in which ways. I know how broad the spectrum of voice, sex, penis, fat distribution and whatnot really is and how much and how far a body can be.
Cis people rarely know as much about their options and they seldom monitor their changes as accurately, especially throughout their puberty.
Through transition, I learned to reclaim my body. I needed to contemplate about which shape, traits and abilities I do want to have, which I organs I want and don’t want to have, how I can (and cannot) express myself sexually. I know what I can accept and how to change what I cannot accept. And after I thought it all through it, I asked for these adjustments, I was heard, I got help to change in all the ways I needed to change and I continue to be seen in a way that is me.
For one, I guess even cis people rarely got this chance to be seen as their so-called “true selves”. They can and do achieve it, but I think that for them this is also not an easy way to come to terms with and find ways to be their true selves. Since they usually do not know as much about possibilities to be, they may struggle even harder.
For two, I know how much dedication, work and time is behind the process of “owning myself”. It was hard and it continues to be so. For cis people, reclaiming their changing body is no easy ride as well. All the strides puberty, menopause and aging take on people as they undergo major physical transitions account for that. How long and how much does it take for a cis dude to understand, accept and like their penis just like it is (length, thickness, circumcision, odd birthmarks, hair growth, erectile quirks)? Quite a while. All in all, it may take us more time in the OR to get our baseline equipment, but to come to terms with it actually may on the more intense spectrum of acceptance work, but probably not out of the usual framework.
Through transition, I learned that my word counts. I was the first person to say “I am a man”. There was a time when I was the only one to know this. I said a true thing about myself and I found ways for other people to understand and to relate to this truth. This is a powerful experience, actually. It may be worthwhile to explore more ways to tap into this power.
Every person who underwent a coming out or learns to speak about violence they experienced owns a similiar kind of power. Trans people are lucky in this regard that we actually have the chance to see a lot of things changing after we speak up (and it’s pretty upsetting that other truths often don’t get the momentum they deserve!)
Through transition, I learned to adapt to changes in body and mind and to fall in love with the process of becoming. I think for every possible bodily change to come - aging, different levels of physical activity, illness, disability - I got to adapt faster and more aware to these changes.
Everbody changes, but we just happen to have one profound experience in advance.
