Character Inspiration Post
Just gonna put a few gifs of my inspiration for my MC Gilbert!
First and foremost, his namesake and one of my favorite literary characters of all time, the OG Gilbert Blythe (RIP Jonathan Crombie)
When I first started playing Hogwarts Legacy, I had no idea the JOURNEY it would take me on. So I picked the first name that came to mind and made my character kinda sorta resemble him if you squint... He wasn't supposed to turn into his own character but then he did, and I couldn't bring myself to change his name because it was just HIM at that point.
Gilbert is a silly goofball dum dum, especially around people he knows well. He is also full of wisecracks (if you give him 3-5 business days to come up with them). I see a lot of (specifically Darren Criss's portrayal) Harry in him. Except substitute the guitar for a piano.
I mean, the eyes? NO idea where I get my love of curly headed, blue eyed boys, nope not a clue... I am also a massive Frodo fan, come at me haters, and my early love of LOTR and Frodo definitely shaped a lot of my OCs.
Speaking of goofball dum dums, Gilbert is just a little bit Shawn Spencer in his boundless confidence, his loyalty to his friends, and his sporadic- but not nonexistent- moments of accidental brilliance that might just end up saving the day.
Aand that's all I got at least for now. I'm sure there are more that I just can't think of at the moment. I'll add them as they come to me.

Thank you wonderful @justanotherinterneruser for tagging me in this silly little challenge! To reiterate the rules: pick 10 of your fics and post the first line of each? Teeheehee...
So going through my works, I realized I have a whopping 55 of them?! It has been a long time on here I suppose. I decided to randomly generate by number to make it fun. I wonder if anyone following on here have been around for all of these? (lookin at you jojo era cause those are definitely the oldest on here)
1 - "Reigen should have waited for Mob to get off school when he got the call." (Good ol' Area Hysteria, mp100. Working steadily on this but life has decided to make me internet absent as of late.)
2- "Hey, Giorno." (The Stoooooooorm. jjba fellas will remember back when this fic was my 2020 Area Hysteria hahaha)
3- “Dude…is this like, our first Halloween together?” (Morioh's spooky swamp stories, jjba. Silly halloween fic for a silly halloween)
4- "Alphonse Elric?" (Heavy Lifting, fma. Very short but I had a lot of fun teehee)
5- "Lady Palutena?" (Wingless words, kiu. Cry I promise I'll finish this soon)
6- "…and then after giving me shit for dragging him over here even though these missions are his job, he insisted that I have no idea what I'm talking about …." (Live Wire, fma. As soon as I fall back into this fandom its over for all of you.)
7 - Gilbert Blythe did not want to be a farmer. (The Art of Being Alone. Any awae fans out there? No? Didn't think so.)
8 - "Fucking Farore, Twi," Legend breathed out, "You made it seem like your Hyrule was a wasteland." (Where The Heart Is, loz/lu. Most self-indulgent gift fic I wrote for my own giftee's pleasure)
9 - "Killua liked to think that he wasn’t affected by anything." (In the Moment, hxh. You guys don't understand I have so many ideas for this fandom. I just need time and a good rewatch)
10 - “Has anyone seen my shoulder armour?” (Heart on your Armour, loz/lu. Making twilight and time bond is forever my unguilty pleasure)
***
What I've learned from this is that I love to start my works with dialogue. Good habit or bad habit?
I got no one really to tag but I ask @jjadegreen to do this if you want toooo. I also invite anyone reading this to just go ahead and do it but TAG ME TAG MEEEE I WANNA SEEEEE

A Floral Detour
Summary: Gilbert stops to pick flowers. A series of near misses ensue. An alternate ending to the season 3 finale
A/N: This is my first ever fic about a romantic pairing, and I admittedly have very little experience with such things so my inspiration is drawn solely from fiction, so my apologies if it doesn't feel realistic. Full disclosure, this is basically a rough draft so if there are any mistakes or flaws please let me know so I an fix them. Also big shoutout to @rai-knightshade for helping me figure out the logistics of travelling from Charlottetown to Toronto, and for giving me the motivation I needed to say "this is close enough" and post this.
"Diana, what letter?"
Diana was momentarily silent as her mind started piecing together what happened. She had spent the past weeks listening to Anne ramble about Gilbert's splendid chin and expressive eyebrows. Currently, those eyebrows were making it very clear to Diana that this was the first her bosom friend's not-so-unrequited love was hearing of said letter. What could have happened to that letter?
As Diana was silently contemplating this, Gilberts mind was going a mile a minute. Anne loves me? And she wrote me a letter saying as much? Why didn't I receive this letter? Did she even receive my letter? Could Anne Shirley-Cuthbert really love him back?
Realizing that there was a girl sitting across from him who could possibly answer some of these questions, Gilbert snapped out of his daze.
"Diana!" This time, Gilbert raised his voice enough to alert the girl that he was still awaiting an answer. She began with a brief apology for zoning out, then began to explain as best she could.
"Well, first you must know my loyalties lie with Anne, and I dare not betray her confidence. However, I will reveal what she already believes you to know. The same morning you came to my home to inform my father of your plans to propose, Anne went to your house to tell you she was in love with you." Diana paused as she noticed the dopey grin which erupted on Gilbert's face at those last few lines, but she was polite enough not to comment.
"When Ms. Lacroix informed her that you weren't home, she decided to leave a note. I don't know what she precisely wrote, but I do know she said she wrote 'plainly and unromantically' to ensure there could be no misunderstanding her meaning."
At this point Gilbert finally spoke. "Diana, I swear I never received that note. Had I received it…"
"I believe you Gilbert, but that still does not explain why you would cruelly write Anne a letter to tell you that you DON'T love-"
"What? I'll admit, I may have spoken somewhat metaphorically in the letter, but I was certain it made my intentions clear."
At this, Diana could not help but smirk.
"Gilbert, do you mean to say you waxed poetic in this letter? Please, do tell precisely what this love letter said?" Gilbert blushed at her teasing tone, but he could not defend himself as she wasn't wrong. Checking his watch, he realized they were nearing Charlottetown.
"Diana, I promise I will write and explain everything if you only tell me where I can find Anne? I won't have long before I need to board the train to Toronto, but I simply cannot go until I am sure se knows the truth of my feelings." Diana only seems to smile wider at this, showing more of her teasing side which he had never seen before today.
"Oh, planning to frantically dash through the city to profess your love, are you? Anne would find that so romantical, the two of you are truly meant to be!"
The boy reckons he should be embarrassed, however the notion of Ms. Shirley-Cuthbert being his soulmate was to amazing to care about whether his classmate was making fun of him.
************************************************************************
"Tell me what?"
In this moment Winifred was certain that Gilbert Blythe would be the death of her. It is not the first time she had the thought, however once he had ended things with her she believed she had escaped that fate. As if she wasn't humiliated enough by the abrupt end to their courtship, she has now found herself in the rather bizarre position of explaining to the object of her ex-beau's affection that he had left Winifred for her. As tempting as it was to simply let Anne continue on suffering, Winnifred could not help but feel, even though she only met Anne once, that in another life they would have been good friends.
At this thought. Winnie could not help but recall the time Gilbert described someone, she thinks it may have been his teacher, as a kindred spirit. When she had asked why he used that term, he seemed to blush as he confessed it was something he had picked up from Anne. The look on his face when he somewhat absentmindedly added that he often wondered if Anne considered him a kindred spirit as he did she ought to have made Winnie realize that while he was courting her, she would never be the one his heart belonged to.
While Winifred found herself lost in thought, Anne found herself hyper-focused on the blonde girl, trying to discern just what Gilbert hadn't told her. Despite her raging curiosity, she did not dare repeat herself. Fortunately, Winifred seemed to remember she was in the midst of a conversation after a few minutes of awkward silence and began to explain.
"Gilbert will not be coming to Paris with me, as he ended our courtship on account of an 'unrequited love'. I am sure you can draw your own conclusions as to who he was referring to." With this, Winifred found her goodwill just about depleted, so she nodded in farewell and walked away from the redhead, not needing to look back to know she was frozen in place with shock. Feeling brief flash of warmth towards the girl, Winifred faces her once more and calls out to her.
"For what it's worth, I am now quite certain that for Gilbert, it has only ever been you." after a brief sigh, she adds "I hope you have a wonderful life as well, Anne."
At this, Anne's face turns into a delighted grin, which she tries and fails to temper into a polite smile.
"Thank you, Winni-Winifred. I, uh, I should… well I think I need to, but where is-"
Resigned to her fate of playing cupid for the woman she has been jilted for, Winifred interrupts.
"I would assume he's back in Avonlea." Begrudgingly, she adds "best of luck."
************************************************************************
Part of Gilbert was hoping he'd run into Anne in town, thus giving them more time together before he had to board the ferry. But, as he ran down the path through the park that lead to her boarding house, he saw a cluster of wildflowers of a hue that perfectly matched the shade of her hair and was suddenly no longer worried about the time.
Kneeling to carefully pluck the flowers worthy of this bouquet, he spared a thought for the dirt that was surely staining his pants only to be reminded of the time he stumbled in on a certain redhead covered in flour while baking with Mary.
Distracted by the cheerful memory, he failed to notice said redhead charging down the path he had just abandoned, suitcase in hand. Anne, on the other hand, was far to focused on her quest to confess her love to notice the object of said quest picking flowers less then five feet away from her.
What Anne couldn't ignore, however, was the voice of her adoptive-mother calling her name from across the street once she entered the town. Crossing the road to meet her parents, she is met with confused looks as they both notice her suitcase.
"Heavens, Anne. We left you at the boarding house not even twenty four hours ago and already you've packed your things?" questioned Marilla.
"Well I, Winifred told me… and well I think he…well, I simply must find Gil-"
"Compose yourself, dear. We've found something we believe you'd like to see."
************************************************************************
After his brief detour, Gilbert resumed his journey to find Anne. Standing on the front porch of her boarding house, he found himself oddly nervous. While he thinks she will appreciate the gesture of flowers, he realizes they shall only have a brief moment together if he is to make it to Toronto today. Supposing it should not take to long to say three words, he knocks at the door.
He probably should have realized Anne would not have been the one to answer the door.
"Sorry, sir, but suitors are only allowed on Saturdays between two and four. Furthermore, I shall not have you entering our parlor covered in dirt"
Gilbert briefly looks at his feet, having the decency to look ashamed at his state of disarray.
"I truly am sorry ma'am, but I don't have much time and I simply must speak to Anne-"
At this, he hears a familiar voice call out from inside the house.
"Gilbert!" Moments later, she appears behind the older woman in the doorway. "It's alright ma'am, Gilbert is our classmate from back in Avonlea"
The woman still seemed unwillingly to let him in, so the blonde girl simply slipped past her to the porch.
"Ms. Gillis!"
"Mrs. Blackmore, please. I'll only be a moment." Ruby then smiled innocently at the woman Gilbert assumed was the owner of the house, who then huffed slightly, before nodding and shutting the door.
"Ruby, hello. I'm-"
"Looking for Anne? Yes, I gathered as much." the girl said with a grin. If he weren't focused on finding Anne, he may have spared a moment to be embarrassed about all the teasing he seemed to be receiving today. "She mentioned that she had spoken to Winifred, and was in a rush to pack her things and head back to Avonlea, presumably to see you."
At the same moment Gilbert walked down the stairs, Dian and her father arrived at the boarding house in their carriage.
"Gilbert! We brought your cases. If you take this carriage, you can still make the ferry to Halifax."
"Thank you, but would it be quite alright if I simply rode with you back to the train station? I must return to Avonlea at once."
At this, Diana, who had been gleefully reuniting with Ruby turned back, perplexed.
"Why? Did you speak with Anne?"
When Ruby informed Diana that Anne had gone to find him and the girls began giggling at how "tragically romantical" it all was, Gilbert promptly decided he was better off walking to the station.
************************************************************************Upon finishing there examination of the book, all three Cuthberts had tears in their eyes.
"Now, lets get you back to Blackmore House, you do have class tomorrow"
"Oh Marilla! I was so delighted by this book that I completely forgot of my quest. I simply must return to Avonlea!" Her mother looked concerned at this.
"Anne, is something wrong?"
"In town this morning I ran into Winifred"
"Winifred Rose? Gilbert's fiancée."
"No, Winifred Rose, the woman Gilbert ended is courtship with do to what he thought to be an unrequited love." both women smiled at this, while Matthew stared at his feet and wished they were back at Green Gable so he could take refuge in the barn.
************************************************************************
Later on, Gilbert and Anne would look back and laugh at how many times they narrowly missed eachother that day.
The Cuthberts arrived at the station moments after Gilbert boarded the train, thus not realizing the boy Anne was searching for was on the very train they were buying tickets for.
Gilbert, in all his intelligence, never thought to ask what time Anne had left and assumed she must have taken the earlier train. Because of this, he spent the train ride lost in thought instead of searching the cars for a glimpse of red.
Anne, on the other hand, was sure Gilbert was still in Avonlea and thus brushed it off as her overly active imagination at work when she thought she caught a glimpse of the back of his head.
Anxious to run to Green Gables, Gilbert stood before the train came to a halt, but then the jolt caused him to drop the flowers he'd picked, forcing him to stop to collect them. By the time he got off the train, Anne had already rushed the Cuthberts to their carriage and convinced them to take her directly to the Blythe-Lacroix household.
Gilbert briefly considered stopping at home himself to freshen up, before deciding he simply could not spare another moment before finding Anne.
************************************************************************"Ms. Lacroix! How lovely to see you again! Did you enjoy the flowers I brought?"
"Hazel is fine. Yes they were lovely. What brings you here?"
"I was hoping to see Gilbert?"
At this, Hazel smiled sympathetically.
"He left for Toronto a little while ago, he's going to be attending the University there. I know my son plans to write him soon, is there a message you'd like passed on?"
She could tell this broke the young girls heart, and she was beginning to think the redhead saw her son's partner as more than a "family friend."
"I… well thank you anyways." As tempting as it was to simply bid the girl farewell, Hazel truly did intend to try and become part of the community
"Why don't you join us for dinner? I'm sure Delly would love to see you, and perhaps Bash could shed some light on Gilbert's situation?"
"I appreciate the offer, but I think I need to clear my head." With this, the girl turned and began walking to the place she always went to reflect.
************************************************************************Upon finding an empty Green Gables, Gilbert resigned himself to heading home for supper and then resuming his search in the morning. On his way, he supposed he could spare a few minutes to watch the sun set over the sea. Walking to the cliff he knew had the best view, Gilbert recalled a day two weeks ago when he stood in that very spot and came to the conclusion that he could not propose to another girl, regardless of whether Anne loved him the way he did her. He was so lost in though, he almost did not notice that someone else had beat him to that spot. The first thing he noticed was the red curls cascading down her back which perfectly matched the slightly crumpled flowers in his hands. Then, his attention was caught by the blue dress which, even though he couldn't see them, he knew brought out the blue in her eyes. Combined with the sunset over the water which she gazed at, he was certain he would never see a more beauteous scene. That was, until he worked up the courage to call out her name and she turned to face him.
He could not seem to tear his eyes from hers as he walked towards her. Once they were standing a mere foot apart, he held out the flowers.
"Anne…" He paused as he struggled to find words.
"Did you forget what you wanted to say?" Gilbert let out a small grin at the memory of their encounter months ago at the school house, while an recognized the same romance in her eyes which she had been distracted by that day.
Remembering a day from even further in the past, Anne decided she need not wait for a response. Instead of taking the flowers he offered, she reached to cup his face with her hands. Pausing for a moment search his face for approval, she was met with his smile growing.
At this, she pulled his lips down to meet hers, and suddenly all was right in Anne Shirley-Cuthbert and Gilbert Blythe's worlds. Sure, tomorrow Anne would have to take the earliest train in order to make her first class, and Gilbert would miss his meeting with Miss Stacey's friend in Toronto, but in that moment neither could bring themselves to care.
************************************************************************
Years later, once Anne had been a teacher for a few years and Gilbert had finally finished medical schools, they would sneak way from their wedding reception to come to this very spot, recalling every moment of their past which brought them together, and giddy at the thought of many more sunsets spent in each other's embrace.

10 Shirbert Moments from Anne of Green Gables series I think about a lot
In honor of Valentines Day I thought I would post a list of some of my favorite Anne and Gilbert moments. It was hard to narrow it to just ten as I have been going through all nine books and trying to queue posts about all their iconic moments through the series; However I decided to pick the ones that I remember even when I haven’t read the books in a while. I didn’t have the heart to rank them properly so they’re just listed in chronological order.
1. His future must be worthy of its goddess
In the twilight Anne sauntered down to the Dryad’s Bubble and saw Gilbert Blythe coming down through the dusky Haunted Wood. She had a sudden realization that Gilbert was a schoolboy no longer. And how manly he looked—the tall, frank-faced fellow, with the clear, straightforward eyes and the broad shoulders. Anne thought Gilbert was a very handsome lad, even though he didn’t look at all like her ideal man. She and Diana had long ago decided what kind of a man they admired and their tastes seemed exactly similar. He must be very tall and distinguished looking, with melancholy, inscrutable eyes, and a melting, sympathetic voice. There was nothing either melancholy or inscrutable in Gilbert’s physiognomy, but of course that didn’t matter in friendship!
Gilbert stretched himself out on the ferns beside the Bubble and looked approvingly at Anne. If Gilbert had been asked to describe his ideal woman the description would have answered point for point to Anne, even to those seven tiny freckles whose obnoxious presence still continued to vex her soul. Gilbert was as yet little more than a boy; but a boy has his dreams as have others, and in Gilbert’s future there was always a girl with big, limpid gray eyes, and a face as fine and delicate as a flower. He had made up his mind, also, that his future must be worthy of its goddess. Even in quiet Avonlea there were temptations to be met and faced. White Sands youth were a rather “fast” set, and Gilbert was popular wherever he went. But he meant to keep himself worthy of Anne’s friendship and perhaps some distant day her love; and he watched over word and thought and deed as jealously as if her clear eyes were to pass in judgment on it. She held over him the unconscious influence that every girl, whose ideals are high and pure, wields over her friends; an influence which would endure as long as she was faithful to those ideals and which she would as certainly lose if she were ever false to them. In Gilbert’s eyes Anne’s greatest charm was the fact that she never stooped to the petty practices of so many of the Avonlea girls—the small jealousies, the little deceits and rivalries, the palpable bids for favor. Anne held herself apart from all this, not consciously or of design, but simply because anything of the sort was utterly foreign to her transparent, impulsive nature, crystal clear in its motives and aspirations.
-- Chapter XIX, Anne of Avonlea
2. For the first time her eyes faltered under Gilbert’s gaze
“What are you thinking of, Anne?” asked Gilbert, coming down the walk. He had left his horse and buggy out at the road.
“Of Miss Lavendar and Mr. Irving,” answered Anne dreamily. “Isn’t it beautiful to think how everything has turned out . . . how they have come together again after all the years of separation and misunderstanding?”
“Yes, it’s beautiful,” said Gilbert, looking steadily down into Anne’s uplifted face, “but wouldn’t it have been more beautiful still, Anne, if there had been NO separation or misunderstanding . . . if they had come hand in hand all the way through life, with no memories behind them but those which belonged to each other?”
For a moment Anne’s heart fluttered queerly and for the first time her eyes faltered under Gilbert’s gaze and a rosy flush stained the paleness of her face. It was as if a veil that had hung before her inner consciousness had been lifted, giving to her view a revelation of unsuspected feelings and realities. Perhaps, after all, romance did not come into one’s life with pomp and blare, like a gay knight riding down; perhaps it crept to one’s side like an old friend through quiet ways; perhaps it revealed itself in seeming prose, until some sudden shaft of illumination flung athwart its pages betrayed the rhythm and the music, perhaps . . . perhaps . . . love unfolded naturally out of a beautiful friendship, as a golden-hearted rose slipping from its green sheath.
Then the veil dropped again; but the Anne who walked up the dark lane was not quite the same Anne who had driven gaily down it the evening before. The page of girlhood had been turned, as by an unseen finger, and the page of womanhood was before her with all its charm and mystery, its pain and gladness.
Gilbert wisely said nothing more; but in his silence he read the history of the next four years in the light of Anne’s remembered blush. Four years of earnest, happy work . . . and then the guerdon of a useful knowledge gained and a sweet heart won.
-- Chapter XXX, Anne of Avonlea
3. I just want YOU
“I have a dream,” he said slowly. “I persist in dreaming it, although it has often seemed to me that it could never come true. I dream of a home with a hearth-fire in it, a cat and dog, the footsteps of friends—and YOU!”
Anne wanted to speak but she could find no words. Happiness was breaking over her like a wave. It almost frightened her.
“I asked you a question over two years ago, Anne. If I ask it again today will you give me a different answer?”
Still Anne could not speak. But she lifted her eyes, shining with all the love-rapture of countless generations, and looked into his for a moment. He wanted no other answer.
They lingered in the old garden until twilight, sweet as dusk in Eden must have been, crept over it. There was so much to talk over and recall—things said and done and heard and thought and felt and misunderstood.
“I thought you loved Christine Stuart,” Anne told him, as reproachfully as if she had not given him every reason to suppose that she loved Roy Gardner.
Gilbert laughed boyishly.
“Christine was engaged to somebody in her home town. I knew it and she knew I knew it. When her brother graduated he told me his sister was coming to Kingsport the next winter to take music, and asked me if I would look after her a bit, as she knew no one and would be very lonely. So I did. And then I liked Christine for her own sake. She is one of the nicest girls I’ve ever known. I knew college gossip credited us with being in love with each other. I didn’t care. Nothing mattered much to me for a time there, after you told me you could never love me, Anne. There was nobody else—there never could be anybody else for me but you. I’ve loved you ever since that day you broke your slate over my head in school.”
“I don’t see how you could keep on loving me when I was such a little fool,” said Anne.
“Well, I tried to stop,” said Gilbert frankly, “not because I thought you what you call yourself, but because I felt sure there was no chance for me after Gardner came on the scene. But I couldn’t—and I can’t tell you, either, what it’s meant to me these two years to believe you were going to marry him, and be told every week by some busybody that your engagement was on the point of being announced. I believed it until one blessed day when I was sitting up after the fever. I got a letter from Phil Gordon—Phil Blake, rather—in which she told me there was really nothing between you and Roy, and advised me to ‘try again.’ Well, the doctor was amazed at my rapid recovery after that.”
Anne laughed—then shivered.
“I can never forget the night I thought you were dying, Gilbert. Oh, I knew—I KNEW then—and I thought it was too late.”
“But it wasn’t, sweetheart. Oh, Anne, this makes up for everything, doesn’t it? Let’s resolve to keep this day sacred to perfect beauty all our lives for the gift it has given us.”
“It’s the birthday of our happiness,” said Anne softly. “I’ve always loved this old garden of Hester Gray’s, and now it will be dearer than ever.”
“But I’ll have to ask you to wait a long time, Anne,” said Gilbert sadly. “It will be three years before I’ll finish my medical course. And even then there will be no diamond sunbursts and marble halls.”
Anne laughed.
“I don’t want sunbursts and marble halls. I just want YOU. You see I’m quite as shameless as Phil about it. Sunbursts and marble halls may be all very well, but there is more ‘scope for imagination’ without them. And as for the waiting, that doesn’t matter. We’ll just be happy, waiting and working for each other—and dreaming. Oh, dreams will be very sweet now.”
Gilbert drew her close to him and kissed her. Then they walked home together in the dusk, crowned king and queen in the bridal realm of love, along winding paths fringed with the sweetest flowers that ever bloomed, and over haunted meadows where winds of hope and memory blew.
-- Chapter XLI, Anne of the Island
4. Gilbert, I'm afraid I'm scandalously in love with you.
"Gilbert darling, don't let's ever be afraid of things. It's such dreadful slavery. Let's be daring and adventurous and expectant. Let's dance to meet life and all it can bring to us, even if it brings scads of trouble and typhoid and twins!"
Today has been a day dropped out of June into April. The snow is all gone and the fawn meadows and golden hills just sing of spring. I know I heard Pan piping in the little green hollow in my maple bush and my Storm King was bannered with the airiest of purple hazes. We've had a great deal of rain lately and I've loved sitting in my tower in the still, wet hours of the spring twilights. But tonight is a gusty, hurrying night . . . even the clouds racing over the sky are in a hurry and the moonlight that gushes out between them is in a hurry to flood the world.
"Suppose, Gilbert, we were walking hand in hand down one of the long roads in Avonlea tonight!"
Gilbert, I'm afraid I'm scandalously in love with you. You don't think it's irreverent, do you? But then, you're not a minister."
-- Chapter 9, Anne of Windy Poplars
5. Suitable Places
"(Are you sure you kiss me in suitable places, Gilbert? I'm afraid Mrs. Gibson would think the nape of the neck, for instance, most unsuitable.)”
-- Chapter 12, Anne of Windy Poplars
6. He narrowly escaped bursting with pride
"Anne, this is Captain Boyd. Captain Boyd, my wife."
It was the first time Gilbert had said "my wife" to anybody but Anne, and he narrowly escaped bursting with the pride of it. The old captain held out a sinewy hand to Anne; they smiled at each other and were friends from that moment. Kindred spirit flashed recognition to kindred spirit.
-- Chapter 6, Anne’s House of Dreams
7. Queen of my heart and life and home
"Gilbert, would you like my hair better if it were like Leslie's?" she asked wistfully.
"I wouldn't have your hair any color but just what it is for the world," said Gilbert, with one or two convincing accompaniments.
You wouldn't be ANNE if you had golden hair—or hair of any color but"—
"Red," said Anne, with gloomy satisfaction.
"Yes, red—to give warmth to that milk-white skin and those shining gray-green eyes of yours. Golden hair wouldn't suit you at all Queen Anne—MY Queen Anne—queen of my heart and life and home."
"Then you may admire Leslie's all you like," said Anne magnanimously.”
-Chapter 12, Anne’s House of Dreams
8. Annest of Annes
But the best of all was when Gilbert came to her, as she stood at her window, watching a fog creeping in from the sea, over the moonlit dunes and the harbour, right into the long narrow valley upon which Ingleside looked down and in which nestled the village of Glen St. Mary.
"To come back at the end of a hard day and find you! Are you happy, Annest of Annes?"
"Happy!" Anne bent to sniff a vaseful of apple blossoms Jem had set on her dressing-table. She felt surrounded and encompassed by love. "Gilbert dear, it's been lovely to be Anne of Green Gables again for a week, but it's a hundred times lovelier to come back and be Anne of Ingleside."
-- Chapter 3, Anne of Ingleside
9. I couldn’t live without you
Anne felt like a released bird . . . she was flying again. Gilbert's arms were around her . . . his eyes were looking into hers in the moonlight.
"You do love me, Gilbert? I'm not just a habit with you? You haven't said you loved me for so long."
"My dear, dear love! I didn't think you needed words to know that. I couldn't live without you. Always you give me strength. There's a verse somewhere in the Bible that is meant for you . . . 'She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.'"
Life which had seemed so grey and foolish a few moments before was golden and rose and splendidly rainbowed again. The diamond pendant slipped to the floor, unheeded for the moment. It was beautiful . . . but there were so many things lovelier . . . confidence and peace and delightful work . . . laughter and kindness . . . that old safe feeling of a sure love.
"Oh, if we could keep this moment for ever, Gilbert!"
"We're going to have some moments. It's time we had a second honeymoon. Anne, there's going to be a big medical congress in London next February. We're going to it . . . and after it we'll see a bit of the Old World. There's a holiday coming to us. We'll be nothing but lovers again . . . it will be just like being married over again. You haven't been like yourself for a long time. ("So he had noticed.") You're tired and overworked . . . you need a change. ("You too, dearest. I've been so horribly blind.") I'm not going to have it cast up to me that doctors' wives never get a pill. We'll come back rested and fresh, with our sense of humour completely restored. Well, try your pendant on and let's get to bed. I'm half dead for sleep . . . haven't had a decent night's sleep for weeks, what with twins and worry over Mrs. Garrow."
--Chapter 41, Anne of Ingleside
10. Old love light
DR. BLYTHE:- “The old, old love light that was kindled so many years ago in Avonlea ... and burns yet, Anne ... at least for me.”
ANNE:- “And for me, too. And will burn forever, Gilbert.”

Things from Anne with an e that I feel like writing down
Season 1 Episode 4: An Inward Treasure Born
1. The really good transition shot following the firewood as Gilbert chops wood, Ruby carries it inside, moody putting it in the fire, and Marilla closing the stove, despite none of it actually being in the same place. You almost don’t notice it because of how smoothly the transitions are shot
2. “Not going to school again today?”
3. Anne singing to herself wandering around in a daze
4. “If she doesn’t go back to school soon, you may have to send us both to the looney bin.”
5. The ladybug rhyme
6. Marilla actually asking for Rachel’s advice
7. The cuthberts remind me a lot of my grandparents tbh
8. Anne getting so distracted the oven catches fire, I’ve done that before
9. Anne screaming at Marilla about how it’s hard to do well in life when you have no friends. I’ve been there before
10. Starting to think Matthew is autistic but that could be its own post
11. “She can’t like me when no one else does.”
12. The mention of Katie Maurice, one of Anne’s imaginary friends made from her reflection. The show doesn’t really explain it as thoroughly as the book does so I was confused until I started reading the book
13. The way Anne reminds Matthew of himself when he was younger
14. Jerry fixing his clothes any going “hello ladies~” except he’s like 12-13 so it’s completely ineffective
15. “We’ve been worrying about her.” “Diana especially.”
16. Anne skipping school but still continuing to teach herself anyways
17. Griselda the pinecone
18. When they call the minister on you 😔
19. The way Marilla, self proclaimed conservative, still doesn’t agree with the idea of Anne learning only to be a wife, to not go back to school.
20. An unexpected but intriguing conversation about the integrated concepts of gender and class privileges. Jerry has opportunities Anne cannot because he is a boy but Anne has opportunities Jerry cannot because his family is poor. Anne will always be looked down on by some because she’s a girl but Jerry will also be looked down on for being from an immigrant family.
21. “I don’t see how I’m ever going to be a very good wife quite frankly.” “Probably not.” “I have such a bad temper-“ “true!” “And I’m dreadfully wicked and impatient and skinny and homely DON’T SAY ANYTHING JERRY-“
22. Anne laying down in the middle of the hayloft to lament while poor Jerry is trying to move the hay
23. Anne saying words and Jerry just standing there like 🧍🏻
24. “This is unlike you.” “I have no idea what’s like me. None at all.”
25. Poor Matthew asked if her mind was burdened and Marilla was like “is there anything I can cook or mend or fetch for you” like ma’am please calm down
26. It is very interesting to see how in pre-modern technology era, stopping a fire was way more of a community effort
27. Anne knowing how to help stop the fire because of every fire manual she read and rushing inside without a second thought
28. Jerry being like “she ran inside!!! It was Anne!!! Anne slowed down the fire!!!! :D”
29. “😏 Maybe you could be a firefighter.”
30. “After the events of this evening you should be grateful to have a bed to sleep in at all.”
31. “It doesn’t matter what the other girls think Ruby, it matters what you think.”
32. “I am NOT a Gilbert Blythe fan.”
33. “It’s a shame you’re not in school anymore. You seem awful smart about things.”
34. “As long as they bring food, I don’t care if it’s Quasimodo.”
35. “Go home, and bake cookies!” “Headline, they already did.”
36. Anne yelling at Billy 💖
37. “Gilbert is so chivalrous 🥰.” “Oh hes somethin alright.”
38. Anne bring sure that she could fistfight Billy
39. Matthew teaching Anne how to fight and fake sparring with her
40. The avonlea story club
41. I think Ruby understands what Anne is saying less than Jerry does
42. RUBY SAYING THAT SHE’LL MISS ANNE
43. That prompting Anne to return to school
44. “In my day we didn’t get to choose. I think you should make your own decision.”

Fic Masterlist: JackSparrow589 Edition
There’s never a bad time for shirbert fic recommendations, so this time, I’d like to celebrate @js589! You (definitely) might know her as JackSparrow589 on ao3, or better yet, one of your favorite fic authors! I wanted to recommend every one of her shirbert stories and give you my two-cents about why I think every single one is a must-read.
As you read, I encourage you to drop kudos if you haven’t read and leave a comment with your thoughts! (Oldest to newest, because we’re diggin’ tonight!)
A Bit of Reciprocal Courage: Some first kiss goodness. Gilbert drinks his respect Anne juice AND his confidence juice.
Awestruck: If you’re missing awae, this fills in some blanks with some sweet moments and insight.
Why Can't Life Ever Go Smoothly?: Because Doctor Gilbert is irresistable to both us and Anne.
And All Around, the Snow Fell: In which Cole was so very wonderfully, beautifully right about crushes and feelings. I love the wintery themes in this one. Definitely a good read if you’re in the heat of summer.
Girlish Fun: The sequel to the last one. Speaks for itself! <333
New Possibilities: I’ll let the tags speak for themselves. “Fluff, Pointless fluff, Have I mentioned fluff yet?, Warm and Fuzzy Feelings” This is not false advertising, folks.
It Is Together That We Move Forward: A missing moment we did not know we needed. An important look into accepting comfort from people we love after a tough time.
Sweet as Pie: I always love Jerry teasing Anne about Gilbert and this oneshot DELIVERS.
As Constant and As Fickle as the Sky: I, too, wish I was caught in the rain with Gilbert Blythe. Alas, I’ll have to live vicariously through this fic.
Grant That I May Not So Much Seek To Be Consoled As To Console: The title of this fic makes me tear up. Living up to its name, this fic makes me cry too. A really sweet post 3x03.
Dominoes of a Dance: In which everyone ships Shirbert and they finally get their acts together.
When Trouble Comes Knocking: We love a Jerry and Anne sibling story!!! I’m a sucker for the sheer found family vibes in this.
It's All So Quick and I Feel Sick: I’m right there with Anne feeling her “hope and warmth... and longing.” Post dance feels comin’ right up!
In Which Minnie May Spills the Tea: If Diana hadn’t ripped Gil a new one on the train, THIS is what I would’ve wanted. Perfection.
Could This Be the Moment: This is one of those end of season 3 fics that made watching Gilbert be an idiot a bit more bearable. The ending is so satisfying, ahhhh. <3
The Subtle Distinction Between Jealousy and Envy: When I tell you I did not know the difference between jealousy and envy until this fic. Anne and Gil have a good conversation in this one. (Though Jack, if you wanted to add a second chapter, I would not object. The suspense!)
A Bright and Shining Future: Deserves every kudos it has. Another interesting take on the Gil/Winnie/Anne situation.
As the Seasons Pass: A sequel to the last one! Except hotter and heavier (Jack’s words, not mine).
Down to the Wire: Marilla said #AnneRights! And then upon further reflection, realizes that shirbert rights are Anne rights. Very satisfying though bc there is some COMMUNICATION.
A Shattering of Expectations: Another 3x09 fix it fic that saved my life after I watched Gilbert trample all over Anne’s note.
Moments Unseen: I would’ve killed to see Anne and Winnie’s conversation, but thanks to this story, I don’t have to! Bonus Diana + Gilbert closure too.
Better Late Than Never: A surprise Miss Stacy comes in and plots away. I like the Miss Stacy and Bash vibes in this, something we didn’t get to see.
Words From the Heart: I know for a fact y’all like post season 3 fics, so this one is for you. Twenty chapters of wonderfulness.
Now and Always: REUNITED AND IT FEELS SO GOOD. Thorough kisses and fluff, ahoy!
To Live a Life With No Regrets: In addition to cutting the Winnie drama early, this story sends some much deserved love to my girl Ka’kwet. Overall, just so sweet and wonderful.
A Friendly Favor: I know we’re all about missing moments from the end of season 3, but the beginning is just as important. That’s what this story does!
That'll Be a "Yes": A sweet look into shirbert talking about their future. Something good to read if you’re having a rough day and needs some good feels.
Inflection Points: My personal favorite! When this was being updated I waited for it daily. 10 missing moments from Season 3 that you definitely wanted to see.
Locked In: Think 7 Minutes in Heaven, late victorian edition. Yep, it’s just as wonderful as you expect. This is also the one Jack tried to show me just how fluffy and amazing she can be. I was thoroughly impressed, but not surprised in the slightest.
In Which Feelings Start to Bloom: An Inflection Points Continuation: Exactly what it sounds like. *Insert hallelujah chorus*.
Moonlit, Starstruck: Rated E for married love makin. In my professional shirbert opinion, there isn’t enough of this type of intimacy in shirbert fic. Very romantic, 10/10.
In Which Gilbert Makes the Decision He Damn Well Should Have: In which all of our frustrations cease because Gilbert is just...decent and sweet in this one. Thank God!! 3x08 gilbert who??
Burning Like a Fire Gone Wild: THE DRAMA. We love a good hurt/comfort/happy ending story. I loved every word of this one especially.
To Be Your Last Good Night and Your First Good Day: I’m not usually a modern AU type gal, but this one has me changin my mind.
Nobody Loves Me Like You Love Me: Modern AU’s that made Tessa change her mind, part 2!!
We All Need Someone To Hold: Lovely sequel to the train accident fic (see two bullets up!) Read that one first for sure! Thank me later.
The Wolves Came and Went and We're Still Standing: Modern AUs that made Tessa change her mind, Wedding Edition!! The gettin’ is good, fam!
Like a Heartbeat Skip, Like an Open Page: Jack is a master at canon compliant moments and if you don’t believe me, look no further, just click the heckin’ link.
Skating Lessons: Another fic to read if you’re unbearably hot this summer! A snowy, fluffy, shirbert dream of a fic!
Dressed Up/Dressed Down: Another E fic. I know most of y’all got a thing for shirbert in each other’s clothes so make sure you thank Jack personally for this one.
A Most Unexpected Remedy: When Jack delivers, she REALLY delivers. Another fic diving into Anne and Winnie’s conversation. Her and I were both mad about Winnie’s characterization, and so Jack fixed it up real nice!
Over the Sky: This is the soiree reunion fic I wanted like NONE OTHER. 3.3k words of dreams come true!
As the New Era Dawns: This story took my heart in its hands and squeezed it. Different than a lot of her other works, but so so so beautiful just the same. I have a soft spot for this one.
In Which Diana Yells at Gilbert an Episode Early: AS SHE SHOULD!!!! In Jack’s words, “The title speaks for itself, folks.”
Somniferous: Smoochin’ and sleepin’ to the MAX, fam. A 5+1 fic that stole my heart away.
The Relentless Persistence of Destiny: Lastly, the (currently) unfinished AU that peeks into what would’ve happened if Anne and Gilbert would’ve met in college. Gotta tell you, this story is refreshing for very clear reasons (mostly, it doesn’t make a reality show out of two very sweet, human people.) Bookmark this one so you have something happy to read when you’ve got the sads.
To you, the reader, I hope you enjoy these works as much as I have. Again, if you do, be sure to let Jack know.
To Jack, thank you for writing 46 stories that have gotten this fandom through such crazy times! Through Season 3, cancellation, and a pandemic, you always gifted us with such wonderful content, even though your own personal life bore its own challenges. It’s been such a privilege being your friend and enjoying your beautifully crafted stories. Happy birthday, my love <33

AWAE 2x9 rewatch: thoughts and reactions
This review is dedicated to Dalila Bela, who turns 19 today. Happy birthday!
After a long wait, there she is at last - Muriel Stacy, decorating her new home with potato stamps. What a lovely way to show she is a kindred spirit. She’s basically like an older Anne.
Marilla and Anne utter the same words upon passing Miss Stacy, who is cycling in the opposite direction at top speed - ‘My heavens!’ - except their intonations are so different. Marilla is shocked at the sight of the unconventional-looking stranger, while Anne is in awe of her, and especially the fact that she’s wearing trousers. I don’t think the women of Avonlea, be they progressive mothers or not, won’t be so fascinated with her, though.
And again, Miss Stacy acts exactly like an older Anne, going on and on about potatoes and tardiness and motorbikes before she’s even caught a breath. I can’t wait for Anne to finally meet her. And that concludes the cold open.
I don’t care what Prissy and Josie, or their mothers, say about Miss Stacy- I’m with Anne on this one. They shouldn’t judge their new teacher before they’ve met her up close. She’ll warm her way into their hearts, I’m sure. I actually know it for a fact.
I simply cannot believe Billy brought a gun to school and is openly proclaiming he’s about to kill an animal, a living being, with it. And it’s not just any animal - it’s the fox, Anne’s fox. What has it done to him that he’s so personally violent towards it?
Again, Gilbert alone is the voice of reason (unlike season 3 Gilbert, who is the most confused individual I’ve ever seen and has the eyebrows to prove it). ‘There’s no fox here, so how about you put the gun away?’ It’s as if he speaks for me.
Who does Billy think he is, calling his teacher ‘little lady’? He’s lucky she’s not Phillips, otherwise he wouldn’t get away with such disrespectful behaviour.
Once again Anne uses the exact same words as someone else, but with a different intonation. Prim and proper Tillie’s ‘Oh my goodness!’ is one of disapproval (which she’s not to blame for, that’s probably just what her parents have taught her), while Anne’s is an expression of pure admiration and fascination. [Side note: Let’s put things into perspective, though - what would you think if your new teacher showed up to school with no bra on, on her first day at that? I don’t really know what to think of corsets anymore, so I’m not sure how to take this. You tell me.]
What, now Matthew and Jerry, two of my favourite AWAE men, want to catch the fox too? I understand it’s stealing people’s chickens, but hey, a fox must eat too, and it’s not like it can get its food in another way.
What’s happening to Bash? Is farm life not his speed? I’m worried about him, I hope he’s alright.
For this next scene, the introductions, I’ll insert a note from when I first watched this episode. I notice I’ve been doing that a lot lately, but well, it seems I’ve got quite a lot of first impression notes on this season written down, so why not make them public now, here where it’s appropriate? Here goes:
And, just as I was fascinated, things got dramatically bad. Anne wouldn’t stop saying quite private things about everyone who spoke, and Miss Stacy reprimanded her for spreading gossip, resulting in her being unable to come up with words to describe herself (the method used for introductions was everyone would use words starting with their initials to describe themselves. I really wanted to know what Anne would have said about herself, as nobody else seemed to struggle much with the exercise (although I myself always do when asked to do it).
Alright, now I’d like to add something to this. When Ruby describes herself as ‘romantic’ and looked for a G word for ‘Gillis’, I could swear she thought of a certain young man right to her left - heck, she even looked at him before quickly blurting out ‘girl’. Well, yeah, she is a girl. But she’s also defining herself through Gilbert too much. I hope she knows how much potential she has beyond him. Besides, he only has eyes for Anne. I wish we’d got another season so we could see how far Ruby and Moody go. I liked them, but we saw too little of them together. #renewannewithane
Ok, but... it was like Miss Stacy just finished Anne’s sentence. ‘Ruby has a crush on...’ ‘Gilbert Blythe?’ Well, yes, but that’s not what we’re talking about. See, I’m noticing details I did not deem significant enough to note down the first time around. This is what rewatches are for.
Rachel Lynde needs Marilla’s help. That’s a first. Oh, well, it’s rumours, what else. She’s against Miss Stacy. I really don’t like her right now.
No, seriously, what is happening to Bash?
Of course, what the mothers of Avonlea fail to see is that, female or not, trousers or nor, corset or not, Miss Stacy is much more capable of teaching the young minds of Avonlea school than her predecessor. Or at least she’s much more willing to educate them properly. Of course she’ll tutor Gilbert. And Anne will soon find her way into her good graces. I hope. Nay, I know it.
‘Appalling, stupid, clueless...’ this is what I hoped wouldn’t happen, but it happened anyway. Now Anne is beating herself up for the scrape she got into by complete accident. Gosh, I hope someone can fix this.
From my old notes: And again, Cole knows how to fix things, and he does so, brilliantly I would say. Also, with the way he goes out into the nature, raises his hands and shouts out “Come to me, Muse!”, I can totally see him being a pagan... and who’s to say he’s not? I mean, Anne has the makings of one too, remember the Beltane ritual in season 3?
Rachel’s only job seems to be to stick her nose in other people’s business. She has no right to go around asking about Muriel’s marital status and whether she wants to be an old maid. But as anyone who’s watched the full series knows, this will be carried over into season 3.
Seriously, Rachel right now reminds me of Anne earlier with all the gossip, and I see now why she (Anne) made such a bad impression on Miss Stacy. Unfortunately, she (Miss Stacy) cannot assign Rachel Lynde an essay.
Anne’s mind is all taken over by the fox... so much that she’s fallen asleep over her papers... and now, disaster after disaster lead to a small fire, which grows into a bigger fire. If Anne’s essay burns in it, I’ll literally cry. I know a thing or two about lost work. Why, half of this very post I had to write a second time after my computer decided to restart the page with the unsaved draft open. But hey, this is not about me.
So I guess they’ve figuratively and literally forced Miss Stacy into a corset. That’s sad. But I see she’s not giving up on her unique identity.
Oh, great, now the found brothers are fighting. I guess it turns out Bash’s problem is he’s inexperienced in farming and he needs help, but Gilbert is pursuing his own future now and doesn’t seem to care all that much. I feel bad for Bash. But we know Gilbert will stay at least another year and Bash will figure farming out by the time he has to leave.
Ah, I see Anne is feigning sickness so as not to go back to Miss Stacy after yesterday’s fiasco. Well, I’d do the same if I were her, but I’m not quite sure that’s the best solution to the problem at hand. Marilla’s suggestion seems much better to me. Going together so Anne has someone to vouch for her... reasonable and concerned like a true mother.
I see Bash is trying to figure out horse-riding on his own. It looks tough. But he can manage it.
It’s a shame Jerry won’t help Anne with the trap... but well, he was promised good money, and his large family is so poor... the ends sort of justify the means here. Still, Matthew is not in the right to plan on skinning the fox for money.
Gosh, things are heating up between Shirbert. Anne seems to be all the more determined to find and develop her vocation now that Gilbert is working on his. And he doesn’t seem to care much about her feelings right now, being so busy studying and all. But I wonder how this whole thing really makes him feel.
Hey, there are the potato light bulbs! The first science lessons Miss Stacy teaches the class. And they never forget it. How inspiring!
Hey, I just realised something. In her ramble in the cold open, Miss Stacy mentioned that you can use potatoes for a lot of purposes... well, here’s the second one she demonstrates in this episode. Stamps and... lighting a bulb.
Marilla, who took up Miss Stacy’s offer to stay and observe, seems to be a new supporter of the young teacher. See? If people only gave her a chance and saw what she does and how she does it, she might soon be a hit in town. But no, some choose to condemn her instead, as if she’s ever done them wrong. Just like the fox. Except the fox stole some chickens. Miss Stacy is perfectly innocent.
And... poor clumsy Moody had to ruin everything just as Rachel and the ProgressiveTM mothers came in. Too bad. But hey, it’s him who recalled this very first lesson later on when they were graduating, isn’t it?
Hey, Bash has gone to see Mary. Things are getting serious. I guess.
Alas, the mothers are not too pleased with how the lesson turned out. Luckily, Marilla was there to see the whole thing from beginning to end and can support Miss Stacy in front of the rest of the women. And it seems Gilbert and Anne are ready to step in and defend her as well. On their second day with her. That speaks volumes.
Oh, so he’s visiting Mary to talk about Gilbert. But he also talks about himself and his idea to go deep into farming. His story is truly an inspiring one. And also, he’s staying with Mary for supper. As I said, things are getting serious.
Anne decided to show Miss Stacy the story clubhouse... nice. But she’s made another blunder in doing so. She’s forgotten Cole is hiding there from his parents. And now they’ll force him into farming again... as my younger self said when I saw this for the first time, ‘this episode is one of the most devastatingly dramatic ones of this series – ever. What a way to lead up to the season finale’. I think that says it all.
Ah, yes, nobody told Gilbert that Bash wouldn’t be home for supper this evening. Too bad... now he’ll think Bash has run away on him. Meanwhile, Bash is having a good time with Mary. But there’s no way for Gilbert to know that. How unfortunate.
One shot, one gunshot and... wait, it seems the fox has not been killed yet. But the poor clubhouse... Billy is the worst person in this series, hands down. I can’t even. I’m crying. Real tears. Right now.
See, Anne’s blunder was not telling Miss Stacy about Cole. After all, she swore her to secrecy. But it was a blunder nonetheless because Miss Stacy takes her duty as a teacher more seriously than her promise to Anne. If only she’d known the full story... Cole might have been saved.
Miss Stacy riding with Harmon Andrews... I wonder what Rachel, aka the Avonlea yellow pages, will make of that.
‘Sometimes you just have to use your imagination.’ This is powerful because it comes from Marilla. Also, perhaps this is the hidden sense of humour that L.M.Montgomery talked about in the book, which I’m currently rereading.
I can’t, I just can’t. Now Cole feels betrayed by Anne, and Anne is devastated about the clubhouse.... and the women of Avonlea are against Miss Stacy, and Matthew disappointed Anne... can nobody be happy in this episode? It’s truly tragical and devastating. I should not have opted for rewatching it right before going to bed, on a school night at that. How will I sleep now?
Gosh, Cole really has had it now. I’m not saying Billy Andrews did not deserve it (he did and he does), but violence is never the answer. Still, I guess it’s justified now. Too bad it will probably lead to even more trouble for Cole. See, even he’s scared of what he’s done. He surely didn’t mean for it to go that far. And to the creators - this is no way to end an episode.
Let’s sum up: we meet Miss Stacy; intonation matters; the fox is in danger; Billy the bully has a weapon now - how bad can things get?; Bash struggles with farming; Anne accidentally makes a bad impression on a kindred spirit; appalling, stupid, clueless; ‘Come to me, Muse!’; Rachel Lynde sticks her nose into things that are not her business - what else is new; potato light bulbs; Bash visits Mary; the clubhouse is destroyed; Anne accidentally betrays Cole, leading to dramatic consequences; a disastrous ending to a devastating episode.

SHIP HISTORY MEME
Embrace your past and get to know your friends’ fandom origins!
Rules: Post gifs of your fandoms / ships starting with your most current hyperfixation and work backwards. (Bonus points if you share any stories about how or when you got into that ship! But not necessary!!) Then tag anyone whose fandom history you’d like to learn about!
I was tagged by @hithelleth - Thank you!
The Rookie - Lucy Chen x Tim Bradford
Since we’re going form most recent to oldest, I must start with an Honorable mention to Katie trying to brainwash me with Chenford. This may end up being a new ship, if I watch the damn show, because right now I’m rather obsessed with these pretty idiots.
Star Wars - Rey x Kylo Ren/Ben Solo
Technically this came before some of these others (i.e. when I watched The Last Jedi), but Reylo is one of my current hyperfixations. This is a complicated, problematic at times ship, but oh how I love them, for their potential more than anything. I’m also not heartbroken by the end of TROS, but I get an not-insignificant amount of joy at them being made canon (and I’m just laughing at the novelization trying to walk that back. Nice try, neeeever gonna happen.).
The Code - Maya Dobbins x John ‘Abe’ Abraham
There are no gifs for them as a couple, because they were never even hinted at being a ship in the show, but in a demonstration of my absolute susceptibility, @vesperass-anuna talked me into shipping them in about 4 minutes and 36 seconds and I have a whole AU sketched out with her and several started and not quite finished fics.
Supergirl - Kara Danvers x Mon-El
I didn’t want to ship it, I didn’t like him at first, but he grew and changed, and seeing his devotion to Kara won me over. And I won’t lie, knowing they fell in love in real life and got married and are now having a baby makes it even sweeter to me. The key here was growth for both of them, and I think Season 3 really showed that. I will always love Karamel, even though they’ve both moved on.
From Dusk Til Dawn - Seth Gecko x Kate Fuller
Yeah, I shipped them before I ever watched the stupid show. That one is squarely on Evie. She was megashipping them and got me to read fic (total, complete AUs) and I loved it all so much, that I had to watch the show. It’s really not my type of show, and it was totally different than what I was expecting (how did I not know about the snake vampires?!?!?), but I ended up enjoying it sooooo much and shipping SethKate even harder.
and dammit, even though I’ve basically given up hope for a Season 4, they still have not ever officially said it was cancelled
Agents of SHIELD - Skye/Daisy Johnson x Grant Ward
SKYEWARD IS MY HEART AND SOUL AND THE REASON I AM HERE AND ACTIVE ON TUMBLR AND MADE SOME OF MY BEST FRIENDS. These two. THESE TWO TOTAL IDIOTS, HOW I LOVE THEM. They are opposites in a lot of ways, but also have so much in common, and their chemistry is just magnificent. If you look at a lot of my other ships, you’ll see a lot of common dynamics with this one. I will never ever ever get over them, I will be in this trash can for the rest of my life, and I will never see anyone else as their soulmates*. These two belong together and you can (and should) project that on my tombstone.
*That doesn’t mean I hate anyone else either of them have been paired with. I truly don’t. There’s a lot about the Lincoln x Daisy relationship that I quite appreciated, and I was once again sucked into a ship by Ves, so I ship the OT3 of Skye x Ward x Lincoln, but I will always ship Skyeward above anything else.
Doctor Who - The Doctor x Rose Tyler
Behold, the ship that brought me to fandom. I really never sought out additional material beyond a tv show/movie before. But after Season 2 ended so heartbreakingly (and I knew exactly how it ended before I watched), I needed more. I couldn’t just let them go. I was 29 years old and started searching for fanfic. And started reading it voraciously. That is what actually brought me to tumblr in the first place. I had exhausted Pinterest, but could see that tumblr was the source of a lot of what I loved, so I started an account and began exploring. I didn’t really understand how it worked, or even used it super often, but it taught me the framework of fandom, so when later ships crashed and burned hit me, I knew where to go and what to look for.
(two gifs, because Nine and Ten)
Alias - Sydney Bristow x Michael Vaughn
THE SHIP I SHIPPED BEFORE THE TERM SHIP WAS COMMONLY USED. I started watching this show back in high school, with my dad; missed a season when I didn’t have cable; got back into it when my boyfriend (now husband) bought me the DVDs for my birthday; and sucked in most of his roommates as we watched it together. It was pivotal for me and I will forever be so thrilled these two made it.
And Last but oh so not least,
Anne of Green Gables - Anne Shirley x Gilbert Blythe
I was raised on watching the Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea miniseries’. As in, I still have the VHS tapes that I watched as a gradeschooler AND the DVDs and can recite almost the entire scripts. I. LOVE. THEM. I’ve read the whole series of books multiple times and just keep praying that my kids will read and love them someday.
And let me just tell you, revisiting them as an adult, steeped in fandom and shipping dynamics, I realized just how much I have a Type™ and how these two really were the foundation for all of that.
Gosh, this was so fun! Thank you again, Hith!

WHERE do I even BEGIN?????
gonna put it under a cut because i have. lots of thoughts
I’m only going to do a rough take now and I’ll get pretty and clever with it later but the centrality of family to this episode but the specific way family was framed as a concept and what that means... exceptional. Truly, stunningly beautiful.
When Anne asks Ka’kwet the word for family, she explains that in Míkmawísimk, the term they use means ‘people I am connected to because we’re alike’ (which... just need to take a pause to say what an incredibly beautiful piece of language and—since language has such a profound affect on how we look at our existances—what an incredibly beautiful way of seeing it).
I felt like that formed the real thematic backbone of the episode: family not being nearly as simple as blood or something you’re born into, but something that can be fostered and created, something that can be found, which considering Anne’s history and the jounery she’s going on, is so incredibly beautiful and important.
I felt that the entire episode was giving us example of example of these bonds—these relationships of family through connection and similarity. The way Ka’kwet explained family really chimed for me with how Anne sees Kindred Spirits (which makes sense, since ‘kin’ is a term for family!), which is just one example of how Anne and Ka’kwet are immediately drawn to one-another, immediately alike in many ways and so there’s this instantaneous sense of family there.
I love that Anne was having a bit of a giggle over Matthew and Marilla’s similarities over dinner, but there’s an a slight undertone to it—she’s looking at the ways they are evidently family in a manner which doesn’t neccessarily include her. But there are so many ways in which the episode also makes her similarities to them—the ways in which she is so absolutely connected to them through likeness and in family—clear. I mean just watching Matthew and Marilla being absolute muppets to surprise her with that cake—Matthew with his book upside-down, Marilla straight up giggling to herself. They’ve taken in so much of her levity, her mischief and joy: they’ve become more like her, they’ve learned from loving her and changed in the process of becoming a family.
The same with Diana!! With her whole prank to get Anne over for the birthday tea—I mean can you imagine the Diana we first met in season one, who decalred herself to be lacking in imagination and who was so constrained by propriety, getting up to such hijinks? Purposefully yanking her neat hair out of its ribbon (about which I have two points: first, Di’s hair looked absolutely glorious down like that, she’s looking vital and lively and stunning this season; and second, the parallels of Di pulling her hair out to prank Anne, Anne loosing her ribbon and shaking her hair out on the horse, and Ka’kwet taking out her own hair ties she’d made to trade with Anne. Again, parallels are similarities, and similarity means kindred!)
NOT TO MENTION our girl kicking off at her parents about Queens using words like ‘supercede’, demanding her right to an education, slamming furiously away at her piano when she’s dismissed? God I have never been prouder in all my days, but again—she’s grown so much fire since meeting Anne, so much spirit and determination through knowing her. They are alike. They are family.
And with the girls from school in a wider sense too—there’s so much more ease there, a sense of unity and belonging and knowing of each other that lends a fluidity and familiarity to their interactions as a group which was frankly delightful to see (plus: Jane and Tilly both already have me cracking up this season which is wonderful because more of those two was something I really wanted to see). There’s no hostility there now, really—just soft-worn treads of exasperation and bickering which feels deeply familiar. They share the same stories, the same jokes. They have a Togetherness.
Mary and Bash were just... a fucking delight. A true joy. And again! The unity! The way they laugh together, share lines of thought, share such a sense of spirit and cheekiness. And of course they share an Actual Baby now which I will come back to I promise because that deserves space of its own.
And... look. Anne and Gil. If family, if kindred, is something made of things shared, of the ways people are the same, then one really can’t have enough of a giggle over the fact that they both, in the space of one episode, managed to have a moment of Putting Themselves Out There to the other only to be SPECTACULARLY shot down by the absolute MISSILE of the other being a complete fucking idiot. Like, to steal from Josie’s ‘too close to the sun’ comment to Moody (who remains, as ever, a Mood and a half), Anne and Gil each performed a truly impressive Icarus moment in the others’ presence this ep. Gilbert was Full On, Pedal to the Metal making allusions to their Future and Courtship and Marriage (he actually honest to god used the word Future in that conversation bless him, just bless his heart) and Anne just fires off a zeplin-felling, building-flattening rocket launcher of ‘you should really get on with it with Ruby’. And his whole 360 from being Absolutely Prepared to get in on this take notice thing, practically had Anne’s name written out already, to the screeching halt of Disaster Teen like ‘yeah I’m not really a take-notice kind of guy’ god I’m loving getting to see them just be Deeply Stupid Adolescents it’s... so enjoyable.
AND ANNE! Anne Shirley-Cuthbert! Madame! Was fully flashing back to Marilla’s ‘when someone loves you, then you’ll be kissed’ guidance because clearly her brain started to kick into gear when Ruby went off about the romance in his eyes and she just went ‘whelp the only possible way to get to the bottom of this is to corner him, give him a good Staring At, and see if he plants one on me’. Christ she’s iconic, just the monumental, fearless idiocy of that. I mean I’d thought a lot about what barriers there might be in place between Anne and Gilbert assuming from promo materials that they both had to be cottoning on at least a little bit to their feelings, and most of my thoughts were deeply angsty, but I didn’t at any point consider the most simple, the most obvious, the most hysterical answer which is that they’re just both absolute morons about this shit. Gilbert definitely being the greater moron though I mean ‘See ya’ YOU FOOL? YOU FOOL SHE CORNERED YOU ALONE TO BLINK AT YOU AND LEAN INTO YOUR SPACE YOU WERE PRACTICALLY READY TO PROPOSE JUST HOURS BEFORE WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK IS HAPPENING HERE?
Anyway how that ties into my original point on family/kindredness is that Anne and Gilbert are both precisely the same tone of Very Smart Person Who Is Also Catastrophically Stupid At Inopportune Moments and that’s why they’re kindred.
God he asked her if she’d forgotten what she was going to say, the pain I will feel until the end of my days that Bash was not there to witness that moment and tear literal shreds out of Gilbert for it it’s an honest to god tragedy.
which, coming back to our fave married couple because did i not promise???
the baby. THE BABY!!! Bash and Mary have a BABY they have a DAUGHTER her name is DELPHINE and Bash speaks to her in RIDICULOUS VOICES and apparently gets JEALOUS that he couldn’t help FEED HER! Mary carries her on her back and hangs out with Marilla thrice weekly (because Marilla wants baby cuddles) and Bash and Mary cooing over their beautiful daughter?? being desperately in love and so happy? i could scream i could SCREAM
Just the whole dynamic of the Lacroix-Blythe familiar unit broke into my home stole my heart out of my chest and I’m not even mad about it. Gilbert teasing Mary about bossing them about like their old boss on the steamer? the two of them sharing a What a Loveable Idiot Look re: Bash when Bash won’t stop talking to Delphine in weird voices? The ease and comfort with which they all exist in that space that was so sad before? and is now alight with joy and family? Gilbert kissing Delphine’s head and saying goodbye to her before he leaves for the day and mercilessly ribbing Bash on his way out? I’m gonna rewatch it I’m gonna rewatch that scene and literally if anything happens to this family I will scream I’ll SCREAM they’ve all been through enough they all deserve joy.
anyway it’s 3:00am and I’ve descended into nonsense so I’ll be back with a more thought out post (broken up into several because this is long as hell) when I’ve slept but in conclusion I love everyone (except, as ever, Billy Andrews) and I’m so so so happy to have this blessed show back in my life

what could be as lonely as love?
[part two of it’s a slow cinnamon summer. read part 1]
(a/n: Y’ALL. I JUST DELETED THE ORIGINAL POST. I’m so mad at myself... if you liked this or reblogged it sometime yesterday or today...feel free to do it again. The feedback i’ve gotten has honestly been the best. You guys are amazing. I will try to get part 3 up tomorrow. xoxo Content T+)
In the weeks following the secret lake party, Josie decided to throw a small get together at her house for their group of friends. Although Anne did not necessarily consider herself a friend of Josie’s, Ruby had begged and pleaded in the wake of Diana’s absence, especially since Moody was going to be there, and the two had been spending an awful lot of time together. Ruby was convinced that it would only be a matter of days before they officially began courting. Anne could find it within herself to be grateful that Ruby had given up her lifelong pining of Gilbert, however, the reasons why were still not entirely clear to her.
But she knew it had something to do with that night at the lake, where she was beginning to see him as potentially more than a friend. And it frightened her.
Josie spared no expense in ensuring her friends had plates of food and many glasses of punch to help them enjoy the midsummer evening. After one glass, Ruby was giggling uncontrollably at a joke Moody had made and by glass two she was sobbing hysterically at a song he was strumming on his banjo.
This was when she understood exactly just what kind of beverage this punch had in it, and she took it upon herself to drink enough until the movements of her body felt looser and her mind was a little less sad. Marilla trusted her judgement and Anne had grown far wiser when it came to drinking alcohol since the day when Diana and her consumed a whole bottle of raspberry cordial. She smiled reminiscently at the memory as she swirled the orange liquid in her glass and finished the rest with a silent toast to her bosom friend, hoping that she was savoring her time in France.
Deciding she had enough of the girls’ dramatics, Anne slipped outside of the house into the clear, July evening that she was fixed on enjoying properly.
She found herself trailing delightedly through the Pye’s enormous garden, the scent of blooming roses wafting through the twilight air and encompassing her slightly buzzed senses. Giggling lowly, she closed her eyes and attempted to follow the direction of that glorious smell with solely the use of her nose. She reached her arms out to feel for the delicate texture of a petal as she continued further into the maze of tall bushes.
“Where, oh where, are you my lovely friends?” she called out joyfully into the nature surrounding her. For the most part, she was doing well to avoid running into the walls of bushes, but occasionally she walked headlong into one and had to use her vision by slightly squinting open one eye to redirect her path. The several glasses of punch she drank with her classmates seemed to be helping her discover the world in a new light tonight and she could not resist feeling grateful for it.
Eventually, her fingers found the source of her elation, and she knew she had made her discovery when she felt not only the feather-soft, smoothness of rose petals, but also the prickly thorns that accompanied them. Gasping from the slight ache on her pointer finger from the unexpected sharpness, Anne let her eyes drift open fully to appreciate the hundreds of red blooms that lay before her.
“Ah, there you are,” she grinned cheerily, sticking her finger in her mouth to stop the small drop of blood that had formed. “You are especially marvelous tonight with your velvety red petals and deliciously smelling perfume.” She dropped her hand to glide along the tops of the flowers and revelled in their feel.
“Anne?”
The girl heard her name, yet her jubilant ministrations on the rose bushes continued.
“Anne is that you?”
Pausing this time, she turned slowly to face the owner of the curious, low voice. Before her sat Gilbert Blythe, glass of punch in his hand, resting comfortably on an elegant wired bench that was almost humorously too petite for his large, broad form. At this realization, Anne let out an amused laugh, her mind still rather loose from the alcohol she had consumed.
Gilbert’s eyebrow raised in perplexity, his eyes looking bright and content in the dimming evening air. The side of his mouth quirked upwards, revealing half of a smile, as Anne’s laughter began to grow louder and harder until she was clutching her side in a desperate attempt to keep herself from toppling onto the green ground.
“Oh Gilbert,” Anne choked, tears streaming down her cheeks as she choked for air. “I--you--” she attempted again, pushing the falling tendrils of coppery hair back from her face. “That bench you’re sitting on--it looks as it could nearly topple in half at any moment.” If only her brain would have allowed her to consider the words coming out of her mouth…
“Anne Shirely-Cuthbert,” Gilbert chuckled, quite entertained at this girl before him. “Are you calling me fat?” His face broke into a wide, dimpled smile that Anne could not help but saunter toward slightly, her feet moving on their own accord.
“I would never,” she playfully gasped, stopping directly in front of him so that she could get a better look at his dapper features. This was the happiest she had seen him look in a long time, and she wondered if it had anything to do with the drink in his hand. It had certainly aided in lowering her inhibitions. “I am positive that your big ego could do that all on it’s own.”
His face twisted into a mock expression of hurt and Anne’s laughter returned, a melodious tune ringing in his ears. “My ego may never return to the size it once was after a remark like that, Anne,” he grinned, his eyes staring fondly into hers. He brought his glass up to his lips for another sip of his drink.
Anne watched as his lips curled around the rim of the glass, an unwelcome heat forming in the pit of her stomach. These were not details about him she would usually notice and she tried her best to redirect her line of thinking onto something less romantical.
“Do you know what I’ve always wanted to do, Gil? Touch your hair,” she gingerly stated. Great, Anne. That was just the perfectly normal comment to say to someone who was definitely not your romantic partner.
She watched his shoulders tense and the lighthearted expression on his face faltered enough for her to notice. “Anne,” he replied in a tone that denied everything his body had already told her. “How many drinks have you had tonight?”
Anne crossed her arms, irritation building in her chest. For him to think that she needed to be drunk to say something like she wanted to touch his hair. The nerve. “Why is it of your concern? I’ll have you know that I am entirely in control of my thoughts and actions, thank you very much,” came her terse response.
He glanced away from her, not buying into what she had told him, however, he would not dare tell her that for he was a bit tipsy himself.
Anne waited crossly until he finished the drink in his hand, which he was gulping down this time. No longer caring that she would later regret a majority of the choices she was going to make from this point forward, the freckled girl stared boldly at him gulp down his drink, his adam’s apple bobbing, wanting nothing more than to prove him wrong.
The heat in the pit of her stomach had returned, and was growing until she could feel it everywhere. Her whole body was hot and it was all because of him. The handsome boy in front of her with his deep, warm eyes that constantly brought reassurance in her moments of doubt, the spotted beauty marks on his face that she wished to count and connect to form new constellations, and that hair. His dark, wild head of curls that folded in every direction, and had been tempting her to reach out and run her fingers through for weeks now. The jealousy she had felt all because of those water droplets that had clung to it that night.
When he turned his head back toward her, he seemed to pick up on the newfound intensity in her sparkling blue eyes. He rivaled her dark scrutiny with a matching expression of his own.
“So may I?” she asked once again, her chin tilting up to signal that she was not going to relinquish this quest.
“Fine.” His retort was clipped and unfeeling, which left Anne further annoyed that he was acting childish about simply granting her this one wish.
Normally, she was not the selfish type. She was always ready to leave her work at the drop of a hat and run off to help someone in need. But not today. No, in this secluded section of Josie Pye’s garden, filled up on a little too much spiked punch, Anne Shirley-Cuthbert was bound and determined to get her way.
She sealed the distance between them, inching forward until her knees brushed against his. Despite the fabric separating them, her skin burned hot enough that she almost stumbled backward. Quickly steadying herself, she reached out a tentative hand that ghosted along the side of his head. Anne was trying her hardest not to look at Gilbert for she had a sinking suspicion that she would know exactly what she would see if she looked into his eyes. Her hand trembled as she moved her fingertips ever so slowly along the tips of his hair.
Then she brought her fingers into his curly locks and he let out a small gasp of pent up air that she feared had come from her mouth instead because as she touched his hair lightly with one hand, her heart nearly exploded out of her chest cavity in trepidation. His silky strands were everything that she imagined and more. It was as if she were running her hands along the tall wildflowers that grew in the fields near Green Gables. She began to lightly twist a finger around a strand and she watched as it coiled gracefully to her request and then bounce back to its original form. However, one hand coursing through his luscious, sleek hair was not enough for her, and Anne raised her other hand to continue her analysis. As that hand landed on his head, Gilbert’s hands were suddenly grabbing ahold of her waist.
Anne immediately froze, her tender exploration coming to a halt as she inhaled sharply at the contact. She looked straight ahead at the green shrubbery before her and her fuzzy brain wondered if he was going to let go. He did not. Yet she would be a liar if she tried to deny that she didn’t enjoy the slight pressure his large hands were currently presenting on her waist. Reluctantly removing her hands from his hair, she brought them down to hover on top of his hands instead, still not meeting his gaze.
That’s when she heard a whisper, barely loud enough for her ears to register, and quite desperate, “Anne.”
And for the second time that evening, the copper-haired girl was selfish and finally gave in to what she wanted, no matter how insane the desire was, her blood pumping furiously throughout her body with courage. Closing her eyes, she swiftly pressed her lips against his, sunbursts of light exploding behind her eyelids. A noise of shock bubbled out of Gilbert’s throat at first, then he was pulling her closer to him and her body was wedged between his legs quite scandalously, but when had she ever been one to care about what society deemed as proper?
Here she was, heatedly kissing the most beautiful boy she had ever met, and he was returning her advances with all of the passion and fervor she had ever dreamed of. His lips were slightly chapped, however they felt nearly as soft as his hair that her fingers had returned to, and when she pulled at it, a low moan reverberated in the back of his throat, and Anne Shirley-Cuthbert was confident that Gilbert Blythe was going to be the reason for her undoing.
Finally pulling back, Gilbert leaned his forehead against hers and looked at her with heavy-lidded eyes. “Anne-girl,” he murmured breathlessly, a hand coming up from her waist and caressing the freckles on her cheek with his knuckles. Anne’s heart soared from hearing his affectionate nickname spoken from his lips in such a delicate manner. “I think you’ve made your point,” he added with a quirk of his lips.
“Hmm...I’m not sure I have,” she teased lightheartedly, tugging again at the dark strands, which prompted Gilbert to go in for another stolen kiss. She ended it quickly though by pulling away from his embrace from where he sat on the bench and taking a distancing set away from him. “We should be getting back to the house. It’s getting late.” Her mind felt like it was becoming clearer. Anne would have tried to walk back by herself, but the game she had made up to find the roses had ultimately left her lost in this garden.
Gilbert could not help hiding the look of disappointment that crossed his face at her abrupt request after the moment they had shared. He rose and offered her his arm, which she accepted graciously with a placid smile, and they started in the direction from which they initially came in silence, neither seeming to know quite what to say.
“If I behaved immodestly--” she blurted out anxiously, keeping her eyes directed toward the ground. Now that the alcohol was wearing off, rational Anne, who knew how to behave in the presence of a boy, a friend, was returning.
The boy walking beside her let out an incredulous huff. “You didn’t Anne and if I did anything to lead you---”
“Absolutely not Gil,” Anne broke in vigorously, lifting her eyes to meet his with a calm assurance. As much as it pained her to say it, she added, “I think I just need some time to think and process some of the events that conspired tonight.”
Gilbert’s voice sounded tight as he hollowly agreed, “Yes, of course.” This did not do much to aid the guilt she felt in the pit of her stomach during the rest of the walk to the house.
He did not say a word and neither did she.
+++++
The journey back to Green Gables with him by her side was just as quiet and tense, which was very unlike them. Usually they talked far beyond their arrival at the front gate of her home, to the point where Marilla was calling for Anne to come inside the house. Tonight, Gilbert gave her a brief ‘Goodnight’ and turned in the opposite direction toward the Blythe Farm. Anne stood at the gate, watching him go until she could no longer see his broad outline, her throat feeling exceptionally dry. Not like when his lips had been dragging along hers only hours prior. She briefly considered shouting out to him and working to talk this whole situation out. Explain that she had wanted it to happen so badly. Yet he had shut himself off to her because she had hurt him by not saying more.
Here it was, the regret. She was a foolish girl, Marilla was right.
Sighing loudly, Anne opened the gate and made her way into Green Gables. She had assured Matthew and Marilla that she would be alright without them waiting up for her tonight so they were fast asleep in their beds.
When she got to her room, she shut the door quietly and flopped down on her bed, biting down on her bottom lip, hard, in an effort to keep the tears welling up in her eyes from spilling. It was no use. All she could picture was Gilbert, Gilbert, Gilbert. The way his mouth tasted, how he made every nerve in her body act on their own accord, the noises he made because of her.
She knew sleep would be futile tonight.

A life of Longing/Loving (Chapter 3)
Pairing: Anne Shirley x Gilbert Blythe, shirbert
Words: 1,0 K
Warning(s): Mentions of unwanted sex and/or a disturbing past, prostitution, violence, upcoming angst probably, (NOT SMUT)
Summary: Anne Shirley has worked at brothels for as long as she can remember. She has almost given up all hope, when a knight in shining armor appears, from beautiful Avonlea no less, claiming that she is the woman he will marry.
OR: Anne Shirley learns to experience real love while being extremely annoyed at Gilbert Blythe for no reason whatsoever (except for her pride).
A/N: And here comes the knight... Also, if you want to see my updates earlier (on any of my stories) I usually post them first on my AO3 account, and sometimes i forget to post on tumblr, so the link to that account is HERE.
Chapter 2
Gilbert had barely reached the stairs when someone tried to stop him. He didn’t hesitate to elbow the burly man across the face. A good right hook and he was down for the count. More people now approached him, but he was faster than them. With the heavy smell of sweat burning in his nostrils, Gilbert raced up the stairs, his boots sounding like thunder through the calm lounge.
The stairs led him to a hallway. Gilbert slung open every door he could reach. Most rooms were occupied, but the second he saw the women he knew that none of them were her. He didn’t know how he knew, neither did he have the time to think about it.
The last door was a jackpot. He heard another softer cry before he could open the door. The golden handle was stuck, Gilbert felt panic rise inside him and delivered a swift kick to the piece of wood. The door flew open and the hinges made a snapping sound as they strained to keep the door in place.
The sight that met Gilbert inside the room forced him to stop for a split second. A young woman was lying on the floor. She covered her face with her hands and pushed her knees up to her chest as a man kicked her. Gilbert saw her involuntary whimper, her body shaking before his very eyes and he pushed the man away with all the force in his body. The impact wasn’t nearly hard enough. The man looked up and Gilbert recognized him.
“Billy,” Gilbert muttered, frowning.
“What the hell, Gil?” Billy Andrews stood up quickly. “Don’t you see I’m busy?” Gilbert sneered at the man he had known his whole life.
“Busy hurting women?” Gilbert shouted. He grabbed his shirt and slammed him back into the wall. “What is wrong with you?!” In that small moment of standing over the man who had just kicked a woman… the woman, Gilbert came to the startling realization that he wanted to kill him. Not just hurt him but bury him six feet under so that he was sure he would never hurt her again.
Huffing, Gilbert shook his head and let go. “Get out.” The statement was slung back over his shoulder as he turned away from the man he had once known.
“No way,” he pushed Gilbert roughly and gestured to the girl on the ground. “I paid for that dog. I own her.”
Anger boiled deep within Gilberts system. Fires of fury and hatred, smouldering in his dark eyes. He could almost feel the gas swelling inside him, waiting to be lit with a single spark.
“Say that again,” he growled, he didn’t recognize his voice. Billy scoffed and lifted his eyebrows.
“What are you talking about, bud?” Billy asked, seemingly confused by the whole situation. “I’m not lying,” he stated, “I paid for her.”
The spark lit him up. Gilbert turned around and swung his right fist. It hit Billy with a crack on the side of his nose. Gilbert felt the hit stinging in his knuckles, but it didn’t matter now.
“You payed-“ he hit him harder- “for her?” Billy gasped for air beneath him, but Gilbert didn’t care. He grabbed his shirt and tossed him on the ground.
“GET OUT!” he roared and didn’t breathe until Billy scrambled out of the room.
For a few seconds Gilbert stood silently in the middle of the room. Then he turned around and realized that the girl was no longer shaking. He crouched down beside her and took of his coat to cover her up. He checked her pulse and breathing but concluded that she had only fainted.
Carefully he picked her up and cradling her in his arms, he carried her to the bed. The sheets were thin, and obviously not made for warmth, but he packed them around her either way. After a split second of hesitation, he bent down and kissed her forehead lightly. It was her; he knew she was the one. He didn’t know why God had chosen her for him, they seemed completely different, but he would love her. He would take care of her. He would… do anything to keep her safe.
It wasn’t until now that he had the chance to really look at her. She had beautiful red hair, it fell like a waterfall of fire down her shoulders and over his coat. He couldn’t see her eyes, but he wished she would open them, he had a feeling they would be bright. He did however see the dark circles under her eyes. Blue, almost on the verge of black. He wasn’t sure if they were from poor sleeping or hits. It could be both. Her body was frail. He didn’t dare look, he had covered her up for a reason, but he had felt her bones when he had carried her. Didn’t she get enough food? He could give her food. Mary would feed her up quick enough.
He didn’t see the door opening, but he heard it when it shut. A rather large man was standing before him. He didn’t look thin; his skin was hanging off him in flaps and his hair was dirty. The man stared at him.
“What?” Gilbert asked harshly. He didn’t have time for games.
“You cost me a customer,” the man said, his voice gruff. Gilberts frown deepened and he stood from the bed.
“He hurt her.” The man didn’t react.
“He does what he wants when he can pay.” For a second Gilbert had to stop himself from hitting two men in less than an hour.
“You wouldn’t be left with much if he killed her,” he argued, staying by the side of the fire headed girl.
“He would have paid his collateral.” Gilbert drew a deep breath through his nose. The anger boiled, but he forced the temperature down.
“Don’t worry,” Gilbert put a friendly hand on the man’s shoulder, “I’ll pay for his hour and the next.” The man scowled, sceptical, but nodded and left out the half-broken door.
Gilbert turned back around and was surprised to see the young woman sitting upright on the bed. She looked him over quickly and smiled a frail smile.
“I’m a little sore, so if you don’t mind, I would like to get this over with as quickly as possible.”

Anne With An E Season Finale: Thoughts
Warning: here there be spoilers. Also, long.
Just adding that gif because it is sheer poetry.
Winnifred Rose
I felt absolutely awful for her. Obviously Shirbert was endgame but Winnifred has never been shown to be anything but lovely and clever and supportive (and also funny!), and she absolutely did not deserve that.
I’m actually glad that Moira and co didn’t let Gilbert off the hook re: his entanglement with Winnie. He did lead her on, he did give her every reason to think he was going to propose. I’ve read some (perfectly lovely) fanfics where Winnie turns out to be a closeted lesbian and/or she’s the one who tells Gilbert to pursue Anne- while the lesbian angle would have been interesting (although only if they were going to keep Winnie’s character around), Gilbert deserved to be confronted with the knowledge that in his ignorance and haste, he ended up hurting someone who’d done nothing to deserve it. Winnie’s grief and humiliation are so very real issues that a woman of that time would have had to deal with, especially after having been so publicly courted by a suitor- her family was ready to pay for his education, for god’s sake!
I’m not thrilled that Anne’s knowledge of Gilbert’s un-engaged status came from Winnie- it should’ve come from him. But that was clearly a ‘parallels’ writing choice, and we got to see Amybeth in that stunning disheveled hairstyle, so I won’t complain too much.
Diana at Queen’s
I thoroughly enjoyed her parents’ rant- very typical of the time and the characters- but Diana’s passionate eloquence seems to desert her when faced with standing up for herself. She made the beginnings of a case for her higher education- I think it was in the first episode?- but her recent coping/argument strategy seems to be getting angry and running away to cry. It’s not really the kind of development I saw coming for her.
Dalila’s had some wonderful breakout moments this season- the argument with Anne being the highlight- and I’d have liked to see her take everything she’s learned from Anne, Aunt Jo, Cole, and even her mis-handling of Jerry’s feelings, in order to argue as eloquently for herself as she does for Anne.
I also really wanted her to flat-out tell her parents that she’ll ask Aunt Jo to pay for it if they won’t. And Aunt Jo backing her up because of course she would.
Post-Marilla and Mrs Barry’s ‘let them go’ talk, I’d have liked to see the Barrys come around, rather than just have Diana just show up at the boarding house with her dad as jocular as ever. I mean, like ten minutes ago, he was yelling that he wouldn’t let her go to college! Not a great choice there by the writers.
Elijah
It felt a little out of the blue, to be honest, but with so many storylines and such a large cast, that’s to be expected. I really liked the way this one was handled, though, especially the way Gilbert mostly stayed out of it. And that line from Hazel was beautiful. Isn’t Anne’s entire world about the importance of change, and learning?
Couldn’t find that adorable moment where Delly smiles at Elijah, but this is just as good <3 Cutest baby to ever grace our screens.
Matthew and Anne
Hooo boy was this a doozy. I have to say I didn’t see this coming, but I guess we’re way overdue for a Matthew screw-up vis-a-vis Anne’s feelings- Marilla’s had ‘learning moments’ enough!
I literally cried. RH Thompson is just the most perfect Matthew, and he just bleeds love for Anne in every shot. His attempts to be ‘practical’ so as not to give Anne reasons to miss them are so ham-handed, only a sixteen year old girl with serious abandonment issues and a penchant for drama could misunderstand. And she did! The look on her face when she said ‘So you’ll be getting a boy after all’ is everything awful in the world.
As with every Anne/Matthew emotional scene, their make-up was perfect. Honestly, every man should take lessons on how to apologise from Matthew Cuthbert, First ‘I think you’ve heard enough from men on this topic’, and now a proper apology? Perfect man.
Diana Takes No Prisoners, Mr Blythe
The fury of the kindred spirit! Gilbert Blythe had nowhere to hide (or look, or a chance to get a word in edgewise) as Diana Barry gave him the Rant that every one of us has wanted to all season!
Look at the way her face twists. Rewatch, and luxuriate in the way she tears into this clown who has hurt her best friend. I s2g most people might want a Gilbert but I want a Diana. Further proof that you don’t need a horse, a sword, or even goddamn pants to be a knight.
I’m not even going to talk about the ‘note’ reveal. For me, that wasn’t the point.
Lineage
I did wonder what had become of Anne’s quest to know more about her beginnings and her parents- I really hoped it hadn’t just gotten ‘fridged’ amid all the other storylines- and now i see why they’d left it alone. It belongs in this episode- this is the one about the future and family. Be it Elijah’s resolution, or ‘spread our wings and soar’, Diana’s choices for her future, Matthew/Anne/Marilla’s love, and the choice to have her found family with her as she opened the letter (which I adored), family and the future are the two overarching themes of this episode, so Anne’s quest belongs here.
Mrs Thomas was hilarious, particularly because of Marilla’s reactions to her. The reference to ‘Katie’ led them to the book! One of the saddest manifestations of Anne’s orphanhood, leading them to her birth family. Beautiful parallel there.
My mother was a teacher. Juniper. Red hair. I don’t have anything to say. All of that was... sublime. Especially Anne discovering all these things with Matthew and Marilla on either side. So, so, so worth every tear.
All in all, the most heartwarming resolution to the overarching ‘family’ theme.
And now...
.
.
.
SHIRBERT!!!!!
We got the kiss! Oh no, two! Wait, three! Oh man, I don’t normally analyse onscreen kisses, but this one. Gilbert kisses like a boy who knows, he kisses her like he’s saying the word finally. He kisses her like every moment since they met has been leading up to this one, even if at the time, he thought it was leading away. And Anne kisses him like can’t I just... kiss him, like when someone loves you, you’ll be kissed. Like finally.
Started from the bottom...
Now we here
I can’t believe I waited for this, I prepared, I steeled myself...
And I wasn’t ready!!
So, in conclusion:
It was a really good episode, could’ve been great if Diana’s Anne-centric backbone had extended to herself. Shirbert is real, Amybeth can really rock the 1900s fashions, Moira handled the ‘family’ theme exactly as well as we’ve come to expect her to, and now we understand, viscerally, how these two had seven kids.
Seriously, with a first kiss like that, we get it.
I hoped we get a season 4- Ka’kwet’s storyline needs to be properly wrapped up (hasn’t it been two weeks), I want to see Josie Pye and Prissy Andrews’ friendship blossom over beaux and business studies, I want Jane to grow the hell up, I want to know which Paul Tillie’s going to choose, I want to see Ruby and Moody- the loveable idiots. I want Cole to get a boyfriend, to see Delly grow up black in a white village.... I want Anne and Gilbert to navigate the pitfalls of being childhood sweethearts as well as ambitious, clever people (especially an ambitious, clever woman of the time). I want them to have everything (including those seven kids. Lol).
What do you think, kindred spirits?
