Understanding Blood Tests for Diabetes reversal
This article is originally published on Freedom from Diabetes website, available here. Are you confused about the different types of blood tests for diabetes? Wondering which ones are most important and why? Look no further! Our guide will help you all the information you need to understand about the top lab tests for diabetes mellitus.

Introduction to Diabetes and Blood Tests
If you have diabetes, it is important to monitor your blood sugar levels regularly. The ADA recommends that people with diabetes get a fasting plasma glucose (FPG) test at least once a year. An FPG test measures your blood sugar after you have fasted for at least 8 hours. A hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) test should also be done every 6 months to track your long-term blood sugar control. People with diabetes should aim for an HbA1c level below 7%.
Lets understand types of Blood Tests for Diabetes.
The first is the HbA1c test, measures your average blood sugar level over the past two to three months.
The second type of blood test for diabetics is the fasting blood sugar test. This test is usually done in the morning before you eat or drink anything.
The third blood test for diabetics is the post-meal blood sugar test, done two hours after eating.
The fourth type of blood test for diabetics is the urine glucose test. This test measures the amount of glucose in your urine.
The oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) is used to diagnose diabetes and prediabetes. The OGTT measures your blood sugar level after you have fasted for at least 8 hours and then consumed a sugary drink.
Early detection is key to preventing serious complications from the disease. And regular testing will help you to keep your blood sugar levels under control. Diabetes testing can sometimes reveal other health problems, such as kidney disease or high cholesterol.

| fluff | fem!reader | rebekah mikaelson/reader | vampira | posted on wattpad | unsolicited | mention of jelly beans |

Spring was her favorite time, the bright sun, the loose clothes, flowery dresses, and the scent of roses in the air, it was enormous perfection.
When you became a vampire in the eighties, you were seventeen and met a knowledgeable vampire at a school dance.
You should hate high school, however, being transformed by a man who just wanted a hobby opened new doors to your life, gave you pleasures you could never describe.
And even if you wanted to return to your human life, you knew that wasn't possible, and even if it was, you had already gotten used to what it was.
One of the biggest changes was your taste, drinking blood was a great difficulty that you had to deal with alone, learning to control yourself at night, avoiding taking a life as much as possible.
You stopped being a night vampire almost ten years later, when you saved a witch, who decided to give you a daylight ring, something most wouldn't do.
Being blessed with sunlight after years brought a new shine to your life, new reasons to continue no matter how silly it may seem.
You've also gone back to testing new deadly meals, searching for something that doesn't taste so "dead" to your sophisticated palate, and you can't find anything better than jelly beans.
It was strange, you remembered eating when you were still human, but you never paid full attention at the time.
But as a vampire, you experienced it first in Florida, on a spring day with the sun on your skin protected by the ring of light.
They were a specific type, not the hard-shelled ones that stick to your teeth and make you bored of chewing, but the soft ones with sugar.
The flavors vary, the green one was a little sour for you, not good enough, the orange one seemed sweet, almost like paper, the love you was almost like the green one, however, its sourness was very little and the taste was cloying and the purple one seemed very sweet.
His only salvation had always been the red, strawberry jelly bean with little sugar crystals surrounding it, the flavor exploding on his sensitive palate.
It wasn't too sweet, nor without sweet, fortunately it didn't taste like paper and even in so many decades it never became cloying.
You would easily say that red jelly beans were your salvation, the only thing you considered good enough, the only sweet you loved and that went beyond any salty food you didn't despise.
Kol Mikaelson made jokes about your taste, he used to say that red jelly beans couldn't hold a candle to green ones, and you always countered by saying that he only thought that because you were as acidic as he was.
" Don't move too much. " Hope's childish voice scolded her and out of the corner of your eye, you could see Klaus give a smile, proud of his daughter.
" Yes, ma'am. " you replied, straightening your posture one last time.
The ten year old's small hands worked on her hair, surprisingly making a braid that most wouldn't be able to do, but Hope was always way beyond her time.
You were the smartest child you had met in decades, which without meaning to be presumptuous reminded her of yourself as a child.
Your mother used to say that you could become president without any effort, and your father always said that he was tremendously proud of you and your grades, even when he was drunk.
It was strange that he could always be so affectionate with you, drunk or not, when with your mother he always attacked you every time he drank.
You blinked a little faster, trying to push away the thoughts of the people who are gone, regardless of your relationship with your parents, you would miss them forever.
You were in the garden of the Mikaelson Mansion, a remote part of the city, where normally the originals were solving problems, however, on weekends like those they took time off to spend time with family.
Family.
you had met Elijah before all of them and when you learned what he was your initial thought was that his life had come to an end, even though the connection they had was undeniable.
It wasn't romantic at all, but it was totally superior to that, and as time passed you met Klaus when Elijah called you, seeking help to protect Hope.
You weren't that old or very powerful a vampire, but you could never deny a friend's request, especially to protect a child.
Even though initially Klaus didn't look favorably on her and you can't help but imagine that he would easily have a dagger made for you, avoiding having to kill her the conventional way, they eventually become friends.
It was no different with Rebekah, you met her when she arrived in the city, and they both got along absurdly well, almost as if they had known each other for years.
" You better listen, you don't want to ruin my painting, love. " stated the hybrid and you frowned looking at him.
"It's telling us? " ́ asked and he gave a smile.
"But of course, I have a perfect sunset behind you, and my daughter and my best friend are at an exceptional angle, I wouldn't miss that for anything. " he replied, and you smiled.
"Okay, but I want image rights." he replied jokingly, and Hope smiled.
" Me too. " the child said and Klaus made an offended face.
" My goodness, this is a plot. " he stated in disbelief.
" You see, brother, at some point in a thousand years someone would have to surpass you. " said Elijah, going down the porch steps, so he could admire both the girls and his brother's painting. "This is magnificent.
" Thank you, at least someone is giving me some support. " stated the hybrid and you laughed, rolling your eyes.
You turned your attention to the front, where Rebekah was watering some plants with the help of a ruler, you were wearing light clothes, a white tank top with no wrinkles and dark fabric pants, boots on your feet that fortunately weren't damaging the lawn.
You turned your attention to the different types of roses, while you felt your hair being touched by Hope, who from time to time asked you to hold a strand of hair.
You can never be more content with your life, however, the long period you sat on the lawn in Hope's care and being painted by Klaus next to the child and the magnificent sunset, you had to admit needing sugar in your stomach. blood.
Their spectacular red jelly beans.
The vampire searched the house's closets with her eyes wide open, perhaps things weren't going as planned.
How could a perfect weekend not have red jelly beans?
You closed a closet door catching a glimpse of your reflection in the mirror, the perfect braid in your light hair and the greenish eyes showing your disbelief.
The vampire went to the room looking at each jar of sweets, unfortunately they were all the ones Hope used to eat and not you.
Maybe you should start cutting out some sugar, because consuming all the jelly beans you brought on a Saturday was absurd.
Well, it wasn't entirely your fault, you had shared most of it with Hope, hiding it from Hayley's eyes, who always talked about sweets before main meals.
You were two big jellybean traffickers.
" Auntie, what are you doing? " Hope asked, rubbing her eyes after waking up in the middle of the night.
The girl had gone to sleep a few hours ago, and given that you normally didn't sleep due to your vampire ability, you and the majority of the house were still awake.
" The end of the world, my dear. " you replied, approaching the little girl and placing a kiss on her cheek. " But don't worry about that, I'll solve everything myself. " you stated and the child nodded.
"Are you sure?" he asked, his voice a little groggy with sleep.
" Yes, little angel. " he assured, picking up Hope, who laid her head on his shoulder, yawning. "Now, you will go back to bed, and when you wake up, auntie will make your favorite pancakes.
"With blueberries?" She asked as you opened the door to the child's room, which was next to Hayley Marshall's.
"Exactly," she agreed, placing the child on the bed. " Sweet dreams, sweetheart. " you whispered, kissing the little girl's forehead.
"Good night, auntie." Hope whispered, taking a few seconds to fall asleep under the gaze of the vampire who was smiling broadly.
"You're a light sleeper." whispered Rebekah, at the door and the vampire agreed, leaving the room in silent steps, leaving the door open.
" I think you heard me searching the house. " confessed the vampire.
" It's hard for someone not to hear it. " joked Rebekah. " Kol said you were about to start World War III.
" If I go without my candy for a long time, yes. " you said, and the original was sure that it was easily possible.
Rebekah knew that without the little reds you liked you could easily become someone else, you were a faithful servant of the jelly beans, and without you it would be as if your kingdom had collapsed.
Sometimes it seemed like you loved treats more than anyone else.
"You, a little wine will help you." suggested the vampire, giving him her arm.
You looked at her thoughtfully and made a childish pout that made the original smile.
Giving in, you linked your arm through Rebekah's, returning to the kitchen.
Rebekah Mikaelson didn't sleep all night, just like you, you spent the night in front of the TV, drinking wine and criticizing the films that were showing.
Your criticisms border on professional and if you were one of the producers of the films, you would dare to say that you would cry over what was said by your friend.
Friend.
Even years ago the word sounded strange, because even though I was always so open to you, being by your side whenever I needed you, listening to you, the feeling of friendship never belonged to heart of the original.
Almost eleven years, that was how long you had known her, much less than your brother Elijah, and the same amount as Kol or Klaus, however, you knew that her feelings for you were totally different from theirs.
Eleven years was too long, Klaus always said you never did anything slowly, not even falling in love, he judged you for that, but almost eleven years had passed and you were sure you were in love, but those words never left your mouth .
Maybe it was the years of love that, true to you, weren't always, that brought more problems to your life than you could count and it was undeniable how much it shook you.
Pretending a life changed by going to schools and crashing dances, acting as if it belonged to him when that wasn't the truth.
Worldly life didn't matter so much now, you wanted to have what was taken from you back, but with your family here you were at peace and it was inevitable that you wanted it to last forever.
And in a way it would last.
You were preparing your morning coffee using Rebekah left the house, leaving a warning to your brothers that it wouldn't be long.
New Orleans wasn't far away, and when you arrived in the city you knew the exact places you needed to go to get what you wanted.
you would try differently this time, but you wouldn't deny it any longer.
He had no problem falling in love quickly, better than not loving at all.
You twirled a strand of your golden hair around your finger as you analyzed the painting, your gaze wandering over each detail, reinforcing an expression of suspense and criticism.
" If you keep making all this suspense, I will compel you to tell the truth. " Klaus stated from the other side of the studio, you smiled, not knowing for sure if it was in fact just a joke.
" I took vervain. " he replied, but it wasn't true and from the look Klaus gave you you knew he knew that.
You didn't take vervain, you never did, it was your vote of confidence in them at the beginning, and that extended until now, and even with the original hybrid's provocations you knew that none of them would ever compel you.
" I thought it was amazing, daddy. " Hope stated, and Klaus smiled happily, kissing the top of the child's head.
" Me too, it was amazing, and you know how critical I can be. " you replied and Klaus nodded satisfied.
"Of course, I've seen you say things that would cause films to be banned from the catalogue." he replied and the girl smiled, winking at you.
You left Hope with Klaus, who shows you other old paintings, kept in the residence for a few years.
You walked through the corridors humming a song, until you arrived in the room where Kol was centered between the TV, not so focused on the program that was playing.
"Did you happen to see Rebekah?" he asked, missing the vampire some time ago who, according to Elijah, had gone to the city, and the original turned his face towards you.
"You arrived just now, darling, you're outside." he replied. "Lollipop?" He offered, showing the lollipop he had taken from the ones Hope usually consumes.
"No, thank you." He thanked you, refusing the sweet that was sickening to you.
Kol knew this, and was teasing him about missing his adorable jelly beans.
you continued on your way, passing you through the kitchen, where you saw Elijah and Hayley working to make a blackberry pie, which looked delicious.
You stole one of the berries under the hybrid's gaze, who looked at you, forcing a playful "ugly" look, and you smiled happily, leaving the back door.
It was close to dusk again, and you couldn't be happier to witness a sunset again.
The greatest beauty of immortality for you was how many sunsets you could admire.
He saw Rebekah a few steps away, and walked towards the vampire sitting on the tree swing, the light wind ruffling the magnificent doctored strands, highlighting the immortal beauty even more.
Being an immortal, you would easily say that Rebekah was Aphrodite, but it would be an exaggeration to say that the Goddess was as beautiful as you.
Rebekah Mikaelson was Aphrodite.
You sat next to the original, adjusting the flowery dress similar to the day before, and kept your gaze forward, watching the sky starting to take on a pinkish color, and a slight orange.
" Spring is coming to an end, that's a little depressing. " he said, looking at the vampire who smiled.
" At least the color of summer will make you a little happier. " Rebekah argued and you nodded knowing it was true.
Even though spring was your favorite, you loved all seasons, especially here when the sun was even brighter.
"You spent the day out, Elijah said he went to town." She said, paying attention to the original's eyes, which seemed to show some fear. " All good?
" I did something, at the time it seemed like a brilliant idea, but now that you're here I don't know if it can happen. " you he said, leaving the vampire confused.
"What do you mean by that, Bekah?" asked the young woman and the vampire turned her head, taking something that was hidden in the corner of the swing.
You stared at the glass jar with your mouth open, the material seeming to shine a little from the sun's rays reflecting off it, the intense red becoming worthy of all your admiration.
" I brought you a gift. " said the original, and you took the pot carefully, afraid that with all your emotion you could go overboard in terms of strength.
It was a glass jar of jelly beans, all as red as you like, with sugar crystals all over them, and the heart shape, which wasn't normally what you bought, however, it was still amazing.
Hearts.
You looked at Rebekah giving a wide smile.
"That's amazing, thank you." She said extremely excitedly, and pulled the vampire into a hug that she immediately returned.
" I knew you would like it. " you said, still hugging the young girl. "But it's just... I have to say something.
you turned away from you, waiting for the original to continue, you held the glass jar tightly and the original moistened her nervous lips.
" What is it? " you asked softly, eyes narrowing in confusion.
" You know me, I never do anything slowly, ever. For years I lived on the consequences of love, on the desire for a life that I couldn't have. " you said. "But when Hope and you arrived at the family practically together, I saw that I could have a normal life, even though I was still like that... You showed me a way to live like a mortal, even though I wasn't one, with your impeccable taste, reviews that would make film producers cry and an overwhelming addiction to red jelly beans.
You smiled, surprised by what was said to you.
" Well, you helped me with that too, every second you were by my side. " you said, feeling warm at heart being with you.
" It's not just that. " said the original. " For almost eleven years, I tried to mask my emotions, I tried to change them, to find a way to not get hurt, but I was always wrong. " you stated, and you felt the touch on your hand on the bottle.
"Do you mean to say that...
" I'm in love with you." shot Rebekah, interrupting the girl. "I know it's confusing, that we never had room for that, but I couldn't help it, I didn't plan to love you that way. But it's impossible for me not to love you, all your beauty, your passions, your way, everything in You enchant me, princess jellybean.
You froze over her words, your green eyes fixed on the woman who said she loved you, your heart so hot and racing, beating as if you were simply alive.
As if you were a mortal.
" You make me feel like a mortal. " you said, placing the jar of red jelly beans between you. " But that's not bad, because I've never been so alive.
" I think not having love in an immortal heart was the worst punishment anyone could face. " said Rebekah. " But having is the meaning of being alive.
You moistened your lips, feeling your immortal heart racing, alive with the unique feeling that passion could give you.
Rebekah brought her face closer to you, her gaze falling on your red lips and kissed you, in a unique, sweet and passionate way.
An explosion of feeling took over her body, you brought your hand to the original's face, upset that it took so many years to realize something like that, but grateful that this day had arrived.
You discovered that the flavor of Rebekah's red lip gloss was now your favorite candy too.

What do you think about some people in recovery saying "there are no good or bad foods". Whenever I see that, it always reassures me, but then the comments talk about how unhealthy certain foods are and talk about diabetes, heart problems, etc, and then I feel very triggered.
So I've posted a little bit about this before, and my constant saying is "food has no morality."
So here's the thing. There are objectively food items that contain higher concentrations of vitamins. There are also foods that give you your macronutrients in better ways than others. For people who have, say, high cholesterol, there are foods to be generally avoided to help keep it down. For those with fructose intolerance, veggies are a better go than fruits for getting your fiber. If you have high blood pressure, you'll want to eat a low-salt diet, but if you have low blood pressure, you might find yourself needing more salt than the average person.
Health and ideal diet varies incredibly. Though the diet industry will have you obsessed with food purity and only consuming foods they've deemed "good," our bodies are more complicated than that. And food is meant to be enjoyed. We are biologically wired to crave sugars, salts, fats, and carbs, because if we were living in more primitive conditions, these things would be much harder to come by and would provide lengthy boosts of caloric energy. The fact that we still crave these things today is not a moral failing, but an instinct. And indulging in treats because you enjoy them does not mean you're "being bad."
I'm sorry to hear you feel so anxious and triggered, though! It's certainly scary to hear constant fearmongering about food-related health problems. While lack of access to proper, balanced nutrition can be a contributing factor in several health problems, this will not be caused by eating the occasional dessert or having a comfort meal, especially if your other health needs are met. But no one else can understand your personal health needs - you have to work with your doctor based on what you know about your body. Unfortunately medical fatphobia is still rampant, and many doctors may assume that you have all of these health problems if you don't have a thin body. However, these health problems can only be confirmed by test. There are fat people who do not have diabetes. There are fat people who do not have heart disease. These things can only be diagnosed after proper testing has been done.
Keep in mind that, when you hear non-medical-professionals loudly insisting that body-positive and food-positive posters must have all these health problems, many of these people have dedicated their lives to weight loss and dieting and "clean eating" based on what was marketed to them. They have based their worth on their ability to stay thin. And so the thought that somebody else might be living their own best life not doing these things is completely counterintuitive to them at this point. So they might be triggered, themselves. It's hard and scary, but you can remind yourself when you're triggered that the majority of these people have no medical expertise.
Eating a single "unhealthy" food is not going to be the wrench in the system that kills your entire body. Unless, of course, you have an allergy or intolerance to something in that food.

Hehehe. Hi. Saw your tags on my post and would love to hear your own headcanons for T1 Marty. It's an interesting one to ponder for sure!
*chuckles evilly* oh boy, of course!!! i truly end up headcanoning any character i like with t1 diabetes for the soul reasoning of 'well, SOMEONE has to!'
SO!! marty mcfly with type 1 diabetes! where do i even begin! well, i will say that as i am a bttf musical enthusiast, im mainly gonna focus on that instead of movies 2 +3, just because im not AS familiar with them as i am the first movie and a musical!
so, join me under the cut for a LOT of thoughts and headcanons...i have a lot to say lol like a LOT a lot...i apolgise lol
so, i think marty was diagnosed with t1 when he was around 9-10, and was doing ye olde pee-on-a-stick method of blood sugar testing, which was a super inaccurate way of doing it BUT it was either that of nothing in the mid-to-late 70's. he would have always been taking one injection of insulin and just praying it all worked out around that dkjdfjk ah, the joys of early diabetes treatment!
i like it think marty is like me in the sense that i naturally have blood sugars that tend to be on the higher side, and because it wasn't a thing to treat a high blood sugar with more insulin back then, it's why he took up skateboarding!! exercise gets that blood sugar down and his brother, dave, let marty use a skateboard that he had been gifted and never used. thus, marty started skating and just really fucking liked it!
as he got older and all that, and blood glucose monitors became a thing, AND marty became friends with doc, things did a pretty quick turn around in regards to how he treated stuff. doc would've gotten one look at the medieval torture device looking stuff marty was carrying around in his backpack and gone 'nope, i can make this a lot easier!' and basically invented a more modern version of a bgm - u prick ur finger with the lancet, put ur blood onto a calibrated strip into the machine and get a reading! although, i believe it would be less accurate for obvious reason. more likely that you'd either get a 'HIGH' 'LOW' OR 'REGULAR'.
in regards to insulin, as i mentioned earlier, marty would've been on one daily injection for most of his childhood. which is a real annoyance, bc it means ur meals have to happen at certain times with certain amount of carbs. by the time we meet marty in the movies/musical in 1985, he most likely would've just become aware of insulin pens - they legit came out that year lol BUT because i think doc is out here being a disability activist, marty might have received one a lil earlier and without the big ol' price tag attached to it lol so he would've been taking multiple injections a day by the time we meet him!
YES, i use doc as a scapegoat to give marty nicer treatment options!!! he deserves it!! if u have a friend who is a mad scientist, then of COURSE ur gonna abuse that to try and get new and improved and FREE medical equipment! so, i think marty has this stuff in his pockets alongside his walkman lol
i also think the reason marty is known to be as such of a slacker as he is is because besides all the sick days he would have taken, he's also known for sneaking out of class and/or showing up late to take his blood sugars or take his insulin.
the idea of marty having an insulin pump is also something i really like! again, i think doc was able to get his hands on one and rejigged it to fit into the shell of a walkman, which would be great for stealth lol. for me, this applies a lot more to my headcanons relating musical!marty. basically, i think movie!marty has insulin pens, and i think musical!marty has a pump. idk why, i just do djkdfkj i just think musical!doc would
SOOOO, marty in the 50's!! of course, we get marty on the hunt for ANYTHING to drink without sugar - and that's very relatable lol, again as someone with naturally higher blood sugars, i also tend to just find it 100 times easier to have low sugar options than use up SOOO much insulin! but in terms of how tf he's gonna make it thru a week when it comes to insulin, i think because he was meeting doc at the mall so early in the morning, he threw an extra vial or two in his pockets just in case. marty can never be too sure what's going to happen when he meets up w/ doc lol i also think musical!young lorraine would've been DEEPLY confused about what tf all this stuff attached to this boy she has straight up undressed is, and honestly she probably just ripped his infusion site straight out on accident so marty probably returned to injections anyways - but with is 80's sensibilities on how diabetes WORKS and how it's treated, he would've been pretty on top of everything. he would've just had to use those fugly giant syringes. flop!!
once returning to '85 in the new timeline, nothing would have changed w/ marty diabetes bc, well, he would've been diabetic anyways! his parents would be a lot more supportive, a lot bigger disabilitiy activists - i think george mcfly definitely has a diabetic character in his novels! and lorraine is on the pta board FIGHTING for the rights of disabled students BIG TIME, while in the og timeline i imagine they were very much in the mind set of not talking about marty's diabetes bc they saw it as shameful or somehow their fault. catch the mcfly family car having a bumper sticker that says 'someone i love has type 1 diabetes!'
so YEAH, i think that's everything that came to mind for me! musical!marty is defs more the muse of my diabetic headcanon, i think just bc im currently obsessed w/ it so im projecting onto him harder but, BASICALLY;
tl;dr: marty has t1, in the movie he uses insulin pens that he gets from doc, in the musical he uses an insulin pump that doc decked out to make a lot cooler and both verses use a blood glucose monitor that the doc made a lot more compact. ALSO, just for the hell of it - fuck it! jennifer is diabetic too! they knew each other from school but really met at the hospital while they were waiting for diabetes clinic appointments and they bonded lol!
#bttf#back to the future#diabetic marty is canon now because i said so!#idc about realism he's legit a time traveller!! he can have t1 diabetes lol

Does “food as medicine” make a big dent in diabetes?
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/does-food-as-medicine-make-a-big-dent-in-diabetes/
Does “food as medicine” make a big dent in diabetes?

How much can healthy eating improve a case of diabetes? A new health care program attempting to treat diabetes by means of improved nutrition shows a very modest impact, according to the first fully randomized clinical trial on the subject.
The study, co-authored by MIT health care economist Joseph Doyle of the MIT Sloan School of Management, tracks participants in an innovative program that provides healthy meals in order to address diabetes and food insecurity at the same time. The experiment focused on Type 2 diabetes, the most common form.
The program involved people with high blood sugar levels, in this case an HbA1c hemoglobin level of 8.0 or more. Participants in the clinical trial who were given food to make 10 nutritious meals per week saw their hemoglobin A1c levels fall by 1.5 percentage points over six months. However, trial participants who were not given any food had their HbA1c levels fall by 1.3 percentage points over the same time. This suggests the program’s relative effects were limited and that providers need to keep refining such interventions.
“We found that when people gained access to [got food from] the program, their blood sugar did fall, but the control group had an almost identical drop,” says Doyle, the Erwin H. Schell Professor of Management at MIT Sloan.
Given that these kinds of efforts have barely been studied through clinical trials, Doyle adds, he does not want one study to be the last word, and hopes it spurs more research to find methods that will have a large impact. Additionally, programs like this also help people who lack access to healthy food in the first place by dealing with their food insecurity.
“We do know that food insecurity is problematic for people, so addressing that by itself has its own benefits, but we still need to figure out how best to improve health at the same time if it is going to be addressed through the health care system,” Doyle adds.
The paper, “The Effect of an Intensive Food-as-Medicine Program on Health and Health Care Use: A Randomized Clinical Trial,” is published today in JAMA Internal Medicine.
The authors are Doyle; Marcella Alsan, a professor of public policy at Harvard Kennedy School; Nicholas Skelley, a predoctoral research associate at MIT Sloan Health Systems Initiative; Yutong Lu, a predoctoral technical associate at MIT Sloan Health Systems Initiative; and John Cawley, a professor in the Department of Economics and the Department of Policy Analysis and Management at Cornell University and co-director of Cornell’s Institute on Health Economics, Health Behaviors and Disparities.
To conduct the study, the researchers partnered with a large health care provider in the Mid-Atlantic region of the U.S., which has developed food-as-medicine programs. Such programs have become increasingly popular in health care, and could apply to treating diabetes, which involves elevated blood sugar levels and can create serious or even fatal complications. Diabetes affects about 10 percent of the adult population.
The study consisted of a randomized clinical trial of 465 adults with Type 2 diabetes, centered in two locations within the network of the health care provider. One location was part of an urban area, and the other was rural. The study took place from 2019 through 2022, with a year of follow-up testing beyond that. People in the study’s treatment group were given food for 10 healthy meals per week for their families over a six-month period, and had opportunities to consult with a nutritionist and nurses as well. Participants from both the treatment and control groups underwent periodic blood testing.
Adherence to the program was very high. Ultimately, however, the reduction in blood sugar levels experienced by people in the treatment group was only marginally bigger than that of people in the control group.
Those results leave Doyle and his co-authors seeking to explain why the food intervention didn’t have a bigger relative impact. In the first place, he notes, there could be some basic reversion to the mean in play — some people in the control group with high blood sugar levels were likely to improve that even without being enrolled in the program.
“If you examine people on a bad health trajectory, many will naturally improve as they take steps to move away from this danger zone, such as moderate changes in diet and exercise,” Doyle says.
Moreover, because the healthy eating program was developed by a health care provider staying engaged with all the participants, people in the control group may have still benefitted from medical engagement and thus fared better than a control group without such health care access.
It is also possible the Covid-19 pandemic, unfolding during the experiment’s time frame, affected the outcomes in some way, although results were similar when they examined outcomes prior to the pandemic. Or it could be that the intervention’s effects might appear over a still-longer time frame.
And while the program provided food, it left it to participants to prepare meals, which might be a hurdle for program compliance. Potentially, premade meals might have a bigger impact.
“Experimenting with providing those premade meals seems like a natural next step,” says Doyle, who emphasizes that he would like to see more research about food-as-medicine programs aiming at diabetes, especially if such programs evolve and try to some different formats and features.
“When you find a particular intervention doesn’t improve blood sugar, we don’t just say, we shouldn’t try at all,” Doyle says. “Our study definitely raises questions, and gives us some new answers we haven’t seen before.”
Support for the study came from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation; the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL); and the MIT Sloan Health Systems Initiative. Outside the submitted work, Cawley has reported receiving personal fees from Novo Nordisk, Inc, a pharmaceutical company that manufactures diabetes medication and other treatments.

Today is day 3 for me on this new pcos lifestyle, and I'd considered waiting to see if it actually makes a difference before I posted anything. But then I thought about how there's so many other women struggling with this disorder, probably going through the same exact thing as me. So I'm inviting you to follow along this journey with me.
In just these 3 days I have noticed a difference in the way my body is feeling.
The general gist of this "diet" is no gluten, no dairy, no added sugar. It's low carb but it isn't keto. I believe this lifestyle is far more sustainable than keto.
Why are women with pcos not supposed to have gluten and dairy? (Keep in mind I'm not a doctor or a dietician. This is all info I've collected from research and from several dieticians)
Dairy has an insulin like growth factor, which will increase androgens (aka male hormones) in women with pcos.
Eating gluten regularly can result in inflammation. If you have pcos, you're already dealing with inflammation. Apparently 1 in 3 Americans already have an intolerance to gluten. So it's very likely that you and I do, too.
I also found one dietician who said that gluten turns into a hormone in your body that mimics thyroid hormones, and therefore your thyroid attacks it. A lot of women with pcos also have hypothyroidism, aka a low functioning thyroid. I am/was one of those women. My last lab results showed normal thyroid levels! So I do believe this checks out. I hadn't even quit gluten completely at the time, but I'd cut out quite a bit.
I found a study from 2012 that said every woman with pcos should be treated for insulin resistance. I have insulin resistance, I've been tested multiple times, it went away for a while but came back. A high amount of insulin in your blood will cause weight gain. When your insulin levels are high, you are going to store fat. It's why we hear women with pcos say they gained 100 lbs in a year.
I am still researching and learning all of this myself.
I am currently on metformin for the insulin resistance. I take several other vitamins as well.
-a daily multivitamin (I take a prenatal, it's got most of the things I was buying separately, so its saved me money in the long run)
-DHA/Fish oil (this is included in my prenatal)
-a probiotic with cranberry included (healthy gut, healthy urinary tract)
-Inositol. This apparently helps women with pcos regulate their cycle, which rings true for me. I'm currently out of this one, and my period was late consecutively for the 3 months I've been out of it. It's expensive so I haven't been able to re purchase yet. However, it is on the top of my list.
-Magnesium/Ashwaganda. I think the ashwaganda knocks me the hell out at night. When I take it, I fall asleep easier. Magnesium is shown to help with anxiety. I take this in a 2 for 1 pill.
-Curcumin (turmeric): this one allegedly helps with inflammation.
-Apple Cider Vinegar: I take this in a pill because I cannot stand the taste of vinegar. This one helps stabilize blood sugar if taken before meals.
I have been looking into berberine and will be purchasing it as soon as possible. Apparently, paired with metformin it can help stabilize blood sugar.
Of course, do your own research and talk to your doctor before you take anything. These are all supplements I've found through research. I'm not sponsored by anyone, and I have no followers, so obviously I'm not making money off of it. These are all things I take daily.
That's all I've got for now, I'm about to go make breakfast. Byeeeeeeeee

Apple Cider Vinegar: A Timeless Elixir for Health and Wellness
For millennia, people have turned to apple cider vinegar (ACV) as a natural cure for a wide range of ailments. Its consumption as a panacea for health has skyrocketed in recent years, making it a commonplace item in many homes. In this article, we'll look at the history of apple cider vinegar, discuss its health advantages, and discuss how locals in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) may get their hands on this age-old elixir through reputable Vinegar manufacturing companies in UAE.

The Origins and Production of Apple Cider Vinegar:
Crushed apples are added to a fermentation vat with yeast to produce alcohol, which is then further fermented into acetic acid to create apple cider vinegar. The sour flavour and health benefits of ACV come from the fermentation process. Apple cider vinegar is made in the United Arab Emirates using both old and new techniques.
Nutritional Content and Health Benefits:
Acetic acid, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants are just some of the many beneficial substances found in apple cider vinegar. Its use has been connected with various health benefits, such as enhanced digestion, weight management, and blood sugar regulation. The antibacterial qualities of ACV have made it a popular tool in the fight against various types of germs.
· Promoting Digestive Health:
Apple cider vinegar's acetic acid may improve digestion by stimulating the body's natural production of digestive enzymes and fostering a favourable microbiome in the gut. Many people report relief from bloating and heartburn after regularly consuming ACV.
· Managing Blood Sugar Levels:
Studies have shown that apple cider vinegar can help regulate blood sugar levels by increasing insulin sensitivity and decreasing post-meal blood sugar increases. This could be helpful for people with diabetes or those attempting to keep their blood sugar levels in check.
· Supporting Weight Management:
Apple cider vinegar, when combined with regular exercise and a healthy diet, may facilitate weight loss. Apple cider vinegar (ACV) has been shown to lower calorie consumption by acting as an appetite suppressant, metabolism booster, and fullness promoter.
· Enhancing Skin and Hair Health:
Apple cider vinegar, when diluted, may be applied topically to the skin to restore a healthy pH level and fight acne. It's also thought to make hair shine and encourage a healthy scalp.
The Role of Apple Cider Vinegar Suppliers in the UAE:
The role that Apple Cider Vinegar suppliers in UAE play in making this healthy tonic available to locals is vital. They find and sell ACV goods that are both safe and of great quality.
Emphasizing Product Quality:
As a result, a trustworthy Apple Cider Vinegar supplier in UAE – Modern Food Products employ rigorous quality control techniques. This guarantees that consumers obtain unadulterated, natural apple cider vinegar.
Diverse Product Offerings:
Suppliers of apple cider vinegar in the United Arab Emirates stock a wide variety of ACVs, from raw to organic to flavoured. Having so many options means that people may pick the one that they like best and that also helps them achieve their health and wellness objectives.
Embracing a Timeless Elixir:
More and more people in the UAE are including this age-old elixir in their regular routines as the popularity of apple cider vinegar rises. Because of its many applications and the reliability of its vinegar manufacturers and distributors, ACV can be a formidable ally in the fight for greater health and wellness.
Apple cider vinegar has long been revered as a time-tested panacea for a variety of health problems. ACV's appeal to those looking for natural ways to improve their health spans centuries, from its first documented uses to the present day. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) relies on reputable Vinegar manufacturing companies in UAE to ensure that its citizens have access to this precious elixir, allowing them to take advantage of apple cider vinegar's potential health and wellness advantages.

As a medical entomologist/disease ecologist I am thrilled to come upon a tick-borne disease thread containing all accurate information. Everything above is fantastic but I’ll add a couple of things I would love for everyone to know
1) re: climate change. @mybigfatgaylife mentioned that tick seasons are shifting. This is absolutely true. Consider also that if it is 45 degrees or higher, ticks are out. If you have an unseasonably warm day in January the ticks will be questing. There is a clear relationship between winter Lyme diagnoses and warm weather roughly one month prior to positive tests.
2) Diagnostic tests for Lyme disease are often complained about but in fact they are really accurate though often improperly used. A blood test for Lyme will not be positive unless it is administered 4-6 weeks after the tick bite. Often physicians do not know this and give patients false negative results. You know now so you can inform your doctor. You can ask your doctor to look up the guild lines for testing and treatment on the CDC website.
2.1) The Lyme blood test is two part and they both have to be positive for diagnosis. There is a really good reason for this. The first test is not specific to the bacteria that causes Lyme. It’s an assay for immunoglobulins that the body creates during an immune response. This can be caused by many infections and even autoimmune disorders. The second test is a western blot that looks at antibodies specific to flagellum on the bacteria. There are a few other important pathogenic bacteria that will show up positive on this assay including the bacteria that causes brucellosis. It’s important that these tests are administered correctly because while we want to catch Lyme disease and treat it we also want to avoid missing an alternative diagnosis such as autoimmune disease or other pathogen.
3) If you have been bitten by a deer tick, are in the general range where Lyme disease is endemic and the tick has visibly swollen from consuming blood… go to the doctor and request a post exposure prophylaxis antibiotic. Stop the infection when it is still migrating away from the tick bite and is not yet systemic. Fewer doses of broad spectrum antibiotics, no risk of long term symptoms from Lyme. Win win.
4) PERMETHRIN! @headspace-hotel mentioned a bunch of ways to prevent tick bites or to catch them early. Do all of those. Also, consider adding an a pesticide to your arsenal. Permethrin treated shoes and pants are excellent because you don’t put the pesticide on your body and the clothes continue to kill ticks for a few washes. When I do field work I wear a specific set of treated clothing and I change when I am no longer in tick habitat. I have never gotten a tick bite even though I actively go into tick habitat during their peak. Sawyer permethrin is my favorite. Treat clothing away from cats… permethrin is dangerous to cats while wet.
5) Be aware of all tick species because they all come with their own horrors. While the black legged tick (Ixodes scapularis) is the big baddie in public health the others cause issues as well. The American dog tick transmits the causative bacteria for Rocky Mountain spotted fever and tularemia. While rare these two pathogens are way more dangerous than Lyme disease. The lone star tick transmits the causative agent for Ehrlichiosis and Tularemia.
6) An immune response to the lone star tick can cause people to develop a severe allergy to mammalian meat. This disease is called Alpha-gal. It’s a sugar found in mammals that can be transmitted to humans from a previous blood meal taken by that tick. 25% of cases result in anaphylaxis and many others present with GI symptoms only. This is a big enough problem that a company is creating alpha gal free transgenic pigs. Science can do amazing things when motivated by bacon.
Lyme disease vaccine is on its way!

I'm trying to write a post about tick safety and avoiding tick bites, but a lot of the info on websites is like "Avoid going in the woods, in plants, and where there are wild animals" and "Activities like hiking and gardening can put you at risk" and I'm like thanks! This is worthless!
As ticks and tick borne illnesses are expanding their range, I think it's important for people to be educated about these things, and I think it's especially important to give people actual advice on how to protect themselves instead of telling them to just...avoid the natural world
Rough draft version of Tick Advice:
Ticks don't jump down on you from trees, they get on you when you brush against grass, brush, bushes etc.
Ticks get brought to an area when they get done feeding from an animal and fall off them. In the USA, the main tick-bringing animal is deer, but I've seen plenty ticks on feral cats and songbirds.
Ticks get killed when they dry out so drier areas with more sunlight are less favorable to ticks.
The above is useful for figuring out whether an area is likely to have lots of ticks, and how vigilant you have to be in that area.
Wear light-colored, long pants outside. Tuck your pants into your socks, and tuck your shirt into the waist of your pants. Invest in light, breathable fabrics idc
IMMEDIATELY change out of your outside clothes when you come back from a tick-prone area, wash them, and dry them on high heat to kill any ticks that might be stuck on.
Shower and check yourself for ticks after coming inside. Hair, armpits, and nether regions in particular. You can use a handheld mirror or rely on touch; an attached tick will feel like a bump kinda like a scab
While you're outside, you can just periodically check for ticks by running your hands down your legs and checking visually to see if anything is crawling on your clothes. Light colors make them easy to spot, and they don't move fast.
Combing through each others' hair to check for creepy crawly critters is a time-honored primate ritual and is not weird. When hiking, bring a friend who will have your back when you feel something on your neck and need to know if it's sweat or a tick
If you're careful, you can usually catch ticks before they bite you, but if one does bite you, it's not the end of the world. Since tickborne diseases are different regionally i suspect this advice will differ based on where you are, but the important thing is remove the tick with tweezers (DON'T use butter, a lit match, or anything that kills the tick while it's still attached, please) and contact a doctor to see what to watch for. Most illnesses you can catch from ticks are easily treatable if you recognize them when symptoms first appear

How to Prepare for Your Hair Transplant Surgery: A Complete Guide

Hair transplant surgery is an exciting step toward restoring your hairline and boosting your confidence. However, just like any medical procedure, proper preparation is essential to ensure the best possible results and a smooth recovery. In this guide, our best hair transplant doctor in Surat at Recomb Hair Transplant Centre will walk you through everything you need to do before your hair transplant surgery to maximize success and minimize risks.
Pre-Surgery Consultation and Health Assessment
Choose a Reputable Hair Transplant Surgeon In Surat
Research experienced hair transplant specialists with a proven track record. Read reviews, check before-and-after photos, and schedule a consultation to discuss your expectations and the cost of hair transplant in Surat.
Medical Evaluation
Our doctor may conduct a physical examination and review your medical history. Certain conditions, such as uncontrolled diabetes or scalp infections, may need to be addressed before proceeding.
Blood Tests and Scalp Analysis
Some clinics may require blood tests to rule out underlying health conditions. A scalp analysis may also be done to determine hair density and the most suitable approach for the best hair loss treatment in Surat.
Lifestyle Changes Before Surgery
Avoid Blood Thinners
Stop taking aspirin, ibuprofen, and other blood-thinning medication at least one to two weeks before surgery (unless otherwise directed by your doctor). These can increase bleeding and affect healing.
Stop Smoking and Alcohol Consumption
Smoking restricts blood flow to the scalp, which can slow down healing and increase the risk of graft failure. Quit smoking at least two weeks before surgery. Alcohol can also affect blood circulation, so avoid it for at least three to five days prior.
Adjust Your Diet
Eat a nutrient-rich diet with plenty of vitamins and proteins to promote healthy hair growth. Avoid excessive caffeine, processed foods, and sugary drinks leading up to the procedure.
Medications and Supplements to Avoid
Certain medications and supplements can interfere with the surgery. Being one of the best hair transplant centre in Surat, our experts at Recomb hair transplant centre may advise you to:
● Stop blood-thinning medications like aspirin and warfarin
● Avoid vitamin E and fish oil supplements (as they can increase bleeding)
● Discontinue herbal supplements like ginseng and garlic extracts
● Avoid steroid medications unless prescribed by your doctor
If you are on any prescription medications, consult your surgeon before stopping them.
Preparing Your Hair and Scalp
Hair Washing
Wash your hair with a gentle shampoo the night before or the morning of the surgery. Avoid applying any styling products like gel, wax, or hairspray.
Scalp Massage
Some doctors recommend massaging the scalp for 10–15 minutes daily for a few weeks before surgery. This improves blood circulation, which can enhance graft survival.
Avoid Haircuts
Do not shave or cut your hair too short before the procedure. The doctor may need longer hair to better plan the transplantation and ensure natural-looking results.
Planning for Surgery Day
Arrange Transportation
Hair transplant surgery is usually performed under local anesthesia, but you may feel drowsy afterward. Arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home.
Wear Comfortable Clothing
Wear a button-up or zip-up shirt to avoid pulling clothing over your head post-surgery. This helps prevent disturbing the newly implanted grafts.
Eat a Light Meal
Have a nutritious, light meal before the procedure to maintain stable blood sugar levels. Avoid excessive caffeine, as it can increase sensitivity and bleeding.
Mental Preparation and Managing Expectations
Have Realistic Expectations
Hair transplant results take time. You may experience some shedding in the first few weeks, but new hair growth typically begins after three to four months, with full results visible in 12 to 18 months.
Prepare for Recovery
Your scalp may be red, swollen, or slightly tender for a few days post-surgery. Your doctor will provide aftercare instructions, including medications and washing guidelines.
Final Thoughts
Preparing for a hair transplant is just as important as the procedure itself. By following these steps — choosing the right surgeon, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, avoiding certain medications, learning about the cost of hair transplant in Surat and preparing your scalp — you can set yourself up for a successful hair restoration journey.

Bariatric Surgery: Everything You Need to Know Before Taking the Step
Introduction
Bariatric surgery has transformed the lives of millions struggling with severe obesity. If you have tried diet and exercise without success and your weight poses serious health risks, bariatric surgery could be a life-changing solution. However, this is a major decision requiring thorough research and preparation. This guide covers everything you need to know before taking the step toward bariatric surgery.
What is Bariatric Surgery?
Bariatric surgery refers to a set of surgical procedures designed to help individuals lose weight by altering their digestive system. These surgeries typically reduce the stomach's size, limiting food intake and, in some cases, altering nutrient absorption. Common types of bariatric surgery include gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, adjustable gastric banding, and biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch.

Who is a Candidate for Bariatric Surgery?
Not everyone qualifies for bariatric surgery. The general criteria include:
A body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher.
A BMI of 35 or higher with obesity-related health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, or sleep apnea.
Inability to achieve significant weight loss through traditional methods.
Commitment to long-term lifestyle changes and follow-up care.
Psychological readiness for surgery and its associated changes.
Types of Bariatric Surgery
Gastric Bypass (Roux-en-Y)
One of the most common procedures, gastric bypass involves creating a small stomach pouch and connecting it directly to the small intestine, bypassing a portion of the digestive system. This limits food intake and reduces calorie absorption.
Sleeve Gastrectomy
This procedure involves removing a large portion of the stomach, leaving a tube-like structure. It reduces hunger hormones, leading to decreased appetite and food intake.
Adjustable Gastric Banding (Lap-Band)
A band is placed around the upper part of the stomach to create a smaller stomach pouch, restricting food intake. The band can be adjusted or removed as needed.
Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch (BPD/DS)
This complex procedure removes a large portion of the stomach and reroutes the intestines to limit food absorption. It is effective for weight loss but has higher risks and nutritional deficiencies.
Benefits of Bariatric Surgery
Significant Weight Loss: Most patients lose 50-70% of their excess weight within two years.
Improved Health Conditions: Many experience remission of obesity-related diseases like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and sleep apnea.
Enhanced Quality of Life: Increased mobility, better mental health, and improved self-esteem are common outcomes.
Longer Lifespan: Studies show that bariatric surgery can reduce mortality rates associated with obesity-related diseases.
Preparing for Surgery
Medical Evaluations
Your doctor will conduct comprehensive tests, including blood work, imaging, and cardiac evaluations, to determine your eligibility.
Dietary Changes
A pre-surgery diet is often required to shrink the liver and reduce surgical risks. This typically includes high-protein, low-carbohydrate foods and portion control.
Mental Health Assessment
Psychological readiness is crucial. You may need counseling to address emotional eating patterns and post-surgery expectations.
Lifestyle Adjustments
Developing healthy eating habits and an exercise routine before surgery can improve long-term success.
Life After Bariatric Surgery
Recovery Process
Recovery time varies by procedure. Patients typically stay in the hospital for 1-3 days and require several weeks of rest before resuming normal activities.
Dietary Guidelines
Initially, a liquid diet is followed by soft foods and gradually transitioning to solid foods.
Small, frequent meals are necessary to avoid discomfort.
Avoiding high-sugar and high-fat foods can prevent dumping syndrome.
Exercise and Lifestyle
Regular physical activity is essential for maintaining weight loss. Start with light exercises like walking and gradually increase intensity.
Long-Term Follow-Up
Regular check-ups with your healthcare team ensure proper nutrition, weight maintenance, and early detection of potential complications.
Conclusion
Bariatric surgery is a powerful tool for weight loss and improved health, but it requires lifelong commitment and significant lifestyle changes. Understanding the risks, benefits, and necessary preparations will help you make an informed decision. Consult with a medical professional to determine if bariatric surgery is right for you and embark on your journey to a healthier life.

Ok so I didn't have my coffee when I wrote the above post and I missed some key details of my immortal great grandma. Like she had COVID at the age 90 and fucking pulled through it without any complications (like my cousin can't run as fast as she could, post COVID but my grandma was on her feet the day she tested negative again). Also she, my grandpa (her son), my uncle (I have two and this was the younger one), my aunt and my cousin baby brother went to my native to visit the family shrine (in Rajasthan rural area, we own a house and we rent it out). There she caught a lung infection and because her body wasn't getting enough oxygen, she couldn't eat properly and because of that she became listless and didn't have a will to live (the only time I have feared her dying and honestly I had breakdown in front of my counselor about it but that's another story). Then we visited a doc and he told us to get some tests done and in her blood report, the only thing abnormal was her oxygen levels and everything else was perfect and she could stop taking her bp and sugar tablets (she literally recovered from type two diabetes). The doc then told us that we couldn't do anything abt the oxygen levels and the only way to extend her life was to give her oxygen artificially to make up for the low amount produced by her body. Luckily a family friend had the machine because her late (rip) grandpa needed it and they let us borrow it for however long. 2 months later, guess what? The oxygen in her blood if fucking normal without the machine. SHE LITERALLY DID SOMETHING THAT THE FUCKING DOCTORS TOLD WAS IMPOSSIBLE. Her lifestyle is also on another level like:
1. Doesn't eat after sunrise and only eats 45 mins after sunrise
2. Hasn't touches meat, eggs, root veg (onion, garlic, carrot, radish, potato, turnip, etc) in her life.
3. Has done some serious fasts (one of which lasts for 13 months and goes like, 1 day you don't eat and only survive on water, second day you eat only two meals before sunrise and 45 mins after sunset and follow my grandma's diet. Skip eating next two days, eat two meals after those, skip food three days, eat two meals the next day, continue like this till you reach eight days without eating and then repeat the cycle for 13 months she has done this twice in her life).
Also she loves to haunt the house during night time (imagine a 5'0 OLD lady with white hair roaming around in the middle of the night (this honestly gave and still gives me nightmares). And she still cooks her own food and she is the biggest mother her ever, she will constantly pester me about drinking water and whenever I am studying (I study in her room in my late great grandpa's bed) she keeps feeding me and filling my bottles. Also she raised me for my first two years because my sperm donor and his family were abusive so my mom divorced the hell out of him and then my grandma died and basically everyone went into depression so my great grandma basically learnt how to prepare formula, change nappys and basically almost everything even hindi (she speaks a regional language and refuses to learn English because, 'main un angrazo ki bhaasha nahi seekoongi Chubby' (I will not learn the language of the English colonizers) trust me I have tried teaching her a bit of English)
She is a gem but one with sharp edges. She absolutely hates my aunt (who is fucking karen-like bitch tbh) but that is a story for another day.
(sorry for hijacking the post and making it all about my great grandma, but tbh sbe deserves it)
every so often I remember that the East India Company is back

Finding the Top Treatments for Type 2 Diabetes
-- FOLLOW US ON FACEBOOK FOR MORE ARTICLE'S LIKE THIS -- When considering non-insulin medications for managing type 2 diabetes, patients have a diverse array of options. This article explores these medications and the key factors to help determine which treatment may be the most suitable for you.
Non-Insulin Medications for Type 2 Diabetes
A variety of medication classes are prescribed for effectively treating type 2 diabetes:
Metformin
Metformin is typically the first-line medication recommended for type 2 diabetes unless contraindications exist. It is effective, safe, and cost-efficient, with additional benefits such as reducing the risk of cardiovascular events. Metformin helps in lowering hemoglobin A1C levels and can assist with weight management by decreasing the amount of glucose produced by the liver.
Sulfonylureas
Sulfonylureas include medications like glipizide, glyburide, and glimepiride. While generally inexpensive, these drugs can lead to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and may contribute to weight gain.
Insulin Sensitizers
Pioglitazone is in this category and is recognized for its efficacy without the risk of hypoglycemia. However, it does carry potential risks, including increased chance of cardiovascular disease and weight gain.
GLP-1 Receptor Agonists
This class includes medications such as exenatide (Byetta, Bydureon), liraglutide (Victoza, Saxenda), and dulaglutide (Trulicity). Some are administered via daily injection while others are given weekly. Semaglutides, like Ozempic, are also available as weekly injections, with an oral option (Rybelsus) taken daily. These medications can be beneficial for heart health and weight loss but may come with side effects like nausea and diarrhea.
Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4 Inhibitors (DPP-4 Inhibitors)
This category features drugs such as sitagliptin (Januvia), saxagliptin (Onglyza), and linagliptin (Tradjenta). These well-tolerated oral medications, taken once daily, provide a mild reduction in blood sugar levels, primarily decreasing post-meal glucose spikes.
Alpha-Glucosidase Inhibitors
Acarbose belongs to this group, although its use is infrequent due to common gastrointestinal side effects. It functions by inhibiting carbohydrate absorption in the intestines.
Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter-2 Inhibitors (SGLT-2 Inhibitors)
As the most recent addition to diabetes medications, SGLT-2 inhibitors work by expelling excess glucose through urine. There is increasing clinical evidence that these medications not only improve blood glucose control but also offer cardiovascular benefits and aid kidney function. Examples include empagliflozin (Jardiance), dapagliflozin (Farxiga), canagliflozin (Invokana), and ertugliflozin (Steglatro).
Factors Considered in Choosing a Treatment Plan
Recognizing that type 2 diabetes is a multifaceted chronic condition, effective management often requires a combination of risk-reduction strategies along with your specific blood sugar management goals. When devising a treatment plan, your healthcare provider will evaluate several critical factors:
History of Heart Disease: Any prior instances of heart attacks, strokes, or congestive heart failure.
Chronic Kidney Disease: Existing kidney issues can influence medication choice.
Risk of Hypoglycemia: The likelihood of low blood sugar when using various treatment options.
Potential Side Effects: Each medication has specific side effects that will be considered.
Weight Management: Your current weight and how medications may impact it.
Cost and Insurance Coverage: The financial aspect of medication is significant in the decision-making process.
Personal Preferences: Your willingness and ability to adhere to the proposed treatment plan.
Additionally, your A1C test results, which give insight into your average blood sugar levels over the prior three months, will also inform treatment decisions. Generally, the target A1C goal is under 7%, as per the guidelines set by the American Diabetes Association, but this may be tailored to your individual circumstances.
While Metformin is commonly the initial recommendation for type 2 diabetes management, numerous other effective medications exist, ensuring a tailored approach based on individual needs. It is crucial to maintain regular consultations with your healthcare provider to determine the ideal medication for you, alongside essential lifestyle changes, which play a vital role in managing type 2 diabetes effectively.

Managing Diabetes Effectively with Regular Blood Sugar Monitoring

Diabetes is more than a condition—it’s a lifestyle that demands care, attention, and proactive management. Managing it effectively is not just about taking medications; regular monitoring plays an equally important role in maintaining your health and preventing complications. In this blog, we’ll explore why tracking blood sugar levels consistently is vital and how it helps you lead a healthier life.
Understanding the Importance of Diabetes Monitoring
Knowledge is power, and when it comes to diabetes, it’s the power to take control. Diabetes affects how your body processes glucose, the primary source of energy. If left unchecked, abnormal blood sugar levels can lead to serious complications, including heart disease, kidney damage, nerve damage, and even vision problems. Regular monitoring provides real-time insights into your body’s glucose levels, helping you:
Identify Blood Sugar Trends: Detect patterns in blood sugar levels after meals, exercise, or stress
Prevent Hypoglycemia and Hyperglycemia: Address dangerously low or high sugar levels before they escalate into emergencies
Evaluate the Effectiveness of Treatment: Understand how medications, lifestyle changes, or insulin therapy are impacting your condition
How to Monitor Blood Sugar Effectively
To get the most accurate results, it's important to follow best practices when monitoring blood sugar. Here's a step-by-step guide:
1. Invest in a Reliable Glucometer: Choose a device that's user-friendly and provides quick, accurate readings.
2. Know When to Test:
Fasting Levels: Check your blood sugar first thing in the morning
Post-Meal Levels: Test two hours after meals to understand how food affects your glucose
Random Levels: Check at any point during the day for overall monitoring
3. Keep a Log: Record your readings in a notebook or use a mobile app designed for diabetes management.
Tip: Clean your hands thoroughly before testing to avoid contamination and inaccurate results.
Benefits of Regular Monitoring
Monitoring blood sugar levels has some major benefits:
1. Improved Glucose Control
When you consistently monitor your levels, you can adjust your diet, activity, or medication accordingly. This leads to better glucose stability and fewer fluctuations.
2. Reduced Risk of Complications
High blood sugar can damage vital organs over time. Monitoring allows you to detect and correct spikes early, reducing the risk of long-term complications like diabetic neuropathy or retinopathy.
3. Enhanced Energy and Mood
Stable blood sugar levels contribute to a steady energy supply, reducing fatigue and mood swings caused by glucose imbalances.
4. Customized Care Plans
Sharing your readings with your doctor helps them tailor your treatment plan, ensuring it’s aligned with your specific needs.
The Link Between Monitoring and A1C Levels
Daily monitoring is the bridge between today’s actions and tomorrow’s success.
Your haemoglobin A1C level is a crucial marker of diabetes management. It reflects your average blood sugar levels over the past three months. Regular monitoring complements A1C testing by providing immediate feedback and helping you achieve target levels.
Ideal A1C Range: Generally, an A1C level below 7% is considered well-managed for most adults with diabetes
Impact of Daily Monitoring: Studies have shown that individuals who monitor their blood sugar regularly are more likely to maintain healthier A1C levels
The Role of Technology in Diabetes Monitoring
Why do it the hard way when technology makes it easy? Modern advancements have made monitoring easier than ever. Here’s how technology can revolutionize diabetes care:
1. Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs): These devices provide real-time data on glucose levels, alerting you to highs or lows instantly.
2. Diabetes Management Apps: Apps like MySugr, Glucose Buddy, or Dexcom allow you to log readings, track trends, and set reminders for testing.
3. Smartwatches: Devices like Apple Watch can integrate with CGMs, giving you glucose insights at a glance.
Tech Tip: Always keep your devices charged and calibrated for accurate readings.
The Consequences of Neglecting Monitoring
Failing to monitor your blood sugar regularly can have serious consequences, including:
1. Silent Complications: High blood sugar can cause organ damage without noticeable symptoms initially.
2. Uncontrolled Diabetes: Erratic glucose levels can worsen your condition, leading to complications like ketoacidosis or hypoglycemic shocks.
3. Increased Hospitalizations: Poor monitoring often results in emergency visits due to unmanageable sugar levels.
Tips to Incorporate Monitoring into Your Routine
Building a consistent monitoring habit doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Here are some practical tips:
1. Set Reminders: Use alarms or notifications to remind you to check your sugar levels.
2. Make It Convenient: Keep your glucometer in a handy spot, like your bedside table or bag.
3. Reward Yourself: Celebrate milestones like maintaining stable glucose levels for a week to stay motivated.
4. Involve Family: Encourage family members to support your monitoring efforts or check alongside you for accountability.
Monitoring your blood sugar levels isn’t just a task - it’s a powerful tool for taking charge of your health. By understanding your body, identifying triggers, and making informed lifestyle choices, you pave the way for better management of diabetes. Consult a diabetologist for expert guidance, personalized care, and the tools to live your healthiest life yet.
