bariatric surgery is a barbaric surgery. filling you with foreign objects to reduce stomach space, banding your esophagus or fundus such that your body interprets its internal pain signals as fullness. cutting your stomach to a tiny size or evn removing it altogether. it leads to vitamin deficiencies and has a high rate of complications including bile leakage, dumping syndrome, osteopenia, abscesses, pancreatitis, and more. the way people are taught to hate their size so much that they would undergo dangerous surgery, and that the medical industry happily tells people where to sign without telling them the full extent of bodily disfigurement, is tragic. while people may have a valid reason to pursue weight loss, we need to look critically at the way bariatric surgery is marketed and performed and explore more holistic options.

I’m grieving my past self, admiring who I was, how I looked, and how much I loved me. But while I’m grieving, I am learning how to see the beauty of the new me.
I was told that what I’ve been through, is similar to being reborn…. Starting over in a new body.
Like a fire poppy, I am growing in the ashes of my past and into something quite beautiful.

You’re On Your Way to Bariatric Surgery…But Your Loved Ones Have Mixed Feelings. Now What?!
Now this topic right here…is the KICKER.
You are on your way to bariatric/weight loss surgery but some of your family and friends don’t understand why you chose that route. “Can’t you just eat less and exercise more?” “You’re not even THAT fat so you don’t need it!” Or you get the folks that have heard these conspiracies about folks eating so much after surgery that their new stomach/pouch explodes and they die…yeah I’ve heard all of this, too.
You can’t control everyone’s opinions about WLS but you can control how you respond to them.
First of all, your body - your choice. Ultimately, you are the one that knows what is best for you and your health. No one else can tell you that. They obviously don’t live in your body so how would they know what you need to get healthy? In my journey, I had got to a point where my appetite was outrageous and I could no longer put on my clothes comfortably. I was huffing and puffing trying to put on shoes 🙄 I couldn’t take walks without my ankles swelling so much to where I had to sit and let the pain ride on. I knew I had to do something. I tried the gym, eating less, restricting (which is a BAD idea) and it didn’t work. That’s why I decided to go the WLS route and it was (and still is) the best option for me.
Second of all, keep yourself educated on all things WLS. This helps with dispelling those WLS rumors. Ask your doctors questions. Find workshops or classes related to WLS. Find “peer reviewed” articles and sources to learn. This helps you have a well rounded knowledge of WLS and to help educate your loved ones on what actually happens. Will they still bring up dumb stuff? Oh yeah! As long as you keep educating them, they’ll eventually understand your choice…or they won’t and that is still OKAY!
Lastly, this is the hardest thing to grasp and accept but there are going to be individuals that will not open their minds to the WLS world. They are going to say things like, “WLS is the easy way out” which grinds my everlasting gears. They won’t ever understand. And some of these people will be your own folks! The best thing to do is pray for them (I’m Christian so that’s what I do personally) and leave them be. You don’t need that kind of negativity in your life. WLS and this journey is hard enough on us and we have to stay focused on the task at hand!
I’m going to try and post every Saturday from now on. It’s the only day I get to focus on this project. Thanks for reading and let me know what other topics you’d like to discuss!

I don’t know why I thought I could have regular food ._. I double checked my bariatric diet nutritional guide and I’m on soft foods until 6 months after surgery, and it’s barely two months. Maybe cause the second check in with the surgeon is right around the time to stop the soft diet? I had my first check in a week after the surgery and my second check in like three days before thanksgiving so maybe the nutritional guide is wrong?
I mean I feel okay with the foods I’ve been eating, I’m being accustomed to the tiny portions I can eat and being better understanding that my portion of soup will look different than my portion of mashed potatoes or cheese or Greek yogurt and definitely different than my portion of meat.
I should go back to the correct diet for this stage of my post surgery healing, right?

Bariatric surgery happened last week!
I’m losing weight super fast but it’s harder to heal from than I expected.
My surgery went “beautifully “ per my surgeon. I ended up with high blood pressure and high blood sugar since I couldn’t take my meds the day of surgery and I was given a steroid shot. My blood sugar was in the 200’s and the steroid shot kicked my butt however once it got out of my system my blood sugars were awesome and my insulin use is less than half of what it was!
I only boils insulin if I eat more than 10 grams of carbohydrates now.
My abdomen looks misshapen but it’s because of internal sutures and it will go away. I have staples covered in tagaderm because it prevents infection to give me the best chance at healing. My staples come out on the 3rd. I have 6 incisions so one incision is not in the pic.

Some people like a binder. I am not one of those people. I want my body to swell and do what it needs to do to heal.
I can have about 4 ounces of food before I feel sick from eating.
I’m doing peanut butter and bone broth. I have tried other things but the pressure of digestion doesn’t feel awesome. It’s dull achy and why cause discomfort when I already can get what I need from what I’m already doing? I get fluids and protein from my bone broth so I can meat my daily protein goals.
My brain says eat nachos but my GI system won’t let me granted I haven’t even tried because it’s too soon.
I won’t eat more than 4 ounces or half a cup in one sitting. I am particularly about that because I don’t want to stretch out my stomach.
Pancreas transplant here I come!
