Bariatric surgery happened last week!
I’m losing weight super fast but it’s harder to heal from than I expected.
My surgery went “beautifully “ per my surgeon. I ended up with high blood pressure and high blood sugar since I couldn’t take my meds the day of surgery and I was given a steroid shot. My blood sugar was in the 200’s and the steroid shot kicked my butt however once it got out of my system my blood sugars were awesome and my insulin use is less than half of what it was!
I only boils insulin if I eat more than 10 grams of carbohydrates now.
My abdomen looks misshapen but it’s because of internal sutures and it will go away. I have staples covered in tagaderm because it prevents infection to give me the best chance at healing. My staples come out on the 3rd. I have 6 incisions so one incision is not in the pic.
Tumblr media
Some people like a binder. I am not one of those people. I want my body to swell and do what it needs to do to heal.
I can have about 4 ounces of food before I feel sick from eating.
I’m doing peanut butter and bone broth. I have tried other things but the pressure of digestion doesn’t feel awesome. It’s dull achy and why cause discomfort when I already can get what I need from what I’m already doing? I get fluids and protein from my bone broth so I can meat my daily protein goals.
My brain says eat nachos but my GI system won’t let me granted I haven’t even tried because it’s too soon.
I won’t eat more than 4 ounces or half a cup in one sitting. I am particularly about that because I don’t want to stretch out my stomach.
Pancreas transplant here I come!

Seven Best Pancreas Transplant Surgery Hospitals in India
Tumblr media
We might not have heard the name of ‘pancreas transplant’ as often as we have heard ‘liver transplant’ during our lives. The reason being that pancreas is an extremely sturdy organ and usually helps with the maintenance of a lot of essential processes in the body. Pancreas transplant surgery is carried out in many hospitals, and some of the best ones where you can attempt to get the process done are discussed below.
Diabetes Type 1 is also known to be an autoimmune condition where your body’s immune cells destroy the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. It begins mainly in childhood. Juvenile diabetes or diabetes Type 1 can destroy most of the body’s functions if not controlled appropriately.
When this disease stops responding to insulin replacement, pancreas transplant is the only option by which the patient can be gifted a new lease of life. It is still one of the costliest transplant processes in the country and can cost you somewhere from two to twenty lakhs. The patient with diabetes Type 1 condition can survive healthily only when the pancreas begins to function again.
Do you have someone who needs to know more about pancreatic transplants. Or, is it that you are trying to search for some information yourself, for your kid or your loved ones? Let us then get into knowing which can be the best hospitals for pancreas transplant in India.
Foremost pancreatic transplant hospitals in India
Some of the most advanced centres for undertaking the pancreas transplant surgery for your child or your loved ones are listed below.
1. Apollo Hospitals, Chennai
It is one of the best pancreatic transplant hospitals in India. The hospital is completely equipped to carry out pancreatic transplantation. The patient’s pancreas is not removed, but the donor’s pancreas is added in the process. Simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantation, pancreas after kidney transplant and pancreas transplant alone are a few types of pancreatic transplantation processes.
The centre facilitates all three forms of pancreatic transplantation processes. If a transplant is carried out in a ten year old patient, there is 80% chance that the patient would be alive till 25 years of age after a simultaneous kidney, pancreas transplant.
2. IKD, Ahmedabad
Institute of Kidney Disease & Research Centre (IKDRC) is one such organization in the country which is capable of performing the pancreatic transplant process in young diabetic patients.
The surgery requires some of the best hands and some of the best procedural arrangements which are entirely standardized with the hospital. Even post-procedural complication handling is one area which is tackled efficiently here.
The cost of doing the surgery here can cost you somewhere around 10-20 lakh INR.
Address: Civil Hospital Campus, Asarwa, Ahmedabad 380016, Gujarat India.
3. PGIMER Chandigarh
PGIMER Chandigarh is also renowned for being capable of handling pancreatic transplantation surgery. The modern diagnostic equipment, the surgery-related facilities, good medical expertise are few of the specialities which help in reviving patients from pancreatic ailments.
PGIMER can effectively handle the complicated process of review, regulation, pre & post-surgery care.
Address: Madhya Marg, Sector 12, Chandigarh, 160012.
4. Fortis, Mulund, Mumbai
Fortis Group is also effectively helping patients undergo pancreatic transplantations. Modern amenities required to perform this kind of complex transplant process is now available with the hospital. The patients are suitably triaged, and appropriate diagnostic tests are run. For those patients who have a no response curve to insulin often can live if their pancreas is transplanted.
Sometimes the whole pancreas is transplanted from a dead body, and on other times, a part of the pancreas is grafted from a living donor. It is critical to regulate and frequently monitor the patient’s condition, and they need to be on regular drugs to prevent pancreatic transplant rejection.
5. Gleneagles Global HospitalsChennai
This hospital is capable of handling appropriate pancreatic transplant procedure which is still in its nascent stage in India. Not many have undergone this procedure yet, and not many are opting for it due to economic and social constraints.
However, this is an excellent organization to go with if you are planning a pancreatic transplant for someone in your family.
6. Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kerala
This hospital is known to be an expert in handling pancreatic transplantation with ease. They have been into pancreatic transplantation and are now one of the big names in the health industry. They possess not only the expertise but also the required skills and appropriate procedural requirements for conducting the transplantations.
The organization has done successful pancreatic transplants in the recent past already.
So here is a list of all the best pancreatic transplantation hospitals where standard medical care is possible before and after the process.
Proper care is taken for the patients who undergo the pancreatic transplantation process, and it should only be targeted for those patients in whom the routine medical therapies cease to work.
If you have any further queries, you can drop in your enquiries in the shared drop box.

Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) in Children: Causes and Prevention
Tumblr media
Introduction
Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is a growing concern in today's society, affecting not only adults but also children. Once thought to be an adult-only condition, NAFLD is increasingly being diagnosed in children due to changes in lifestyle and dietary habits. In this blog post, we will delve into the causes of NAFLD in children and discuss effective prevention strategies to ensure the well-being of our younger generation.
Understanding NAFLD in Children
NAFLD is a condition characterized by the accumulation of fat in the liver cells of individuals who consume little to no alcohol. While it's normal for the liver to contain some fat, excessive accumulation can lead to inflammation and potential damage. In children, NAFLD can progress to more serious conditions, such as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and even cirrhosis if left untreated.
Causes of NAFLD in Children
Dietary Habits: The rise in consumption of high-calorie, processed foods and sugary beverages has contributed significantly to the prevalence of NAFLD in children. Diets rich in refined carbohydrates and added sugars can lead to insulin resistance and fat buildup in the liver.
Lack of Physical Activity: Sedentary lifestyles, with increased screen time and reduced physical activity, play a substantial role in the development of NAFLD. Regular exercise is essential for maintaining a healthy weight and improving metabolic health.
Genetic Predisposition: Genetics can also play a role in a child's susceptibility to NAFLD. Some children may have a genetic predisposition that makes them more likely to develop the condition, especially when combined with poor lifestyle habits.
Overweight and Obesity: Children who are overweight or obese are at a higher risk of developing NAFLD. Excess body weight, particularly around the abdominal area, increases the likelihood of fat accumulation in the liver.
Insulin Resistance: Insulin resistance, often linked to obesity and unhealthy diets, can contribute to NAFLD. When cells become resistant to insulin, the body produces more insulin, which can lead to fat storage in the liver.
Prevention Strategies
Promote Healthy Eating: Encourage a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Limit consumption of sugary foods, fast food, and processed snacks.
Limit Sugary Beverages: Encourage water as the primary beverage and limit the intake of sugary drinks like soda and fruit juices, which can contribute to excessive calorie intake.
Encourage Physical Activity: Aim for at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily. Engage children in activities they enjoy, whether it's playing sports, biking, dancing, or swimming.
Limit Screen Time: Set screen time limits for electronic devices, as excessive screen time is often associated with sedentary behavior and unhealthy eating habits.
Lead by Example: Parents and caregivers play a crucial role in shaping a child's habits. Adopt a healthy lifestyle as a family to provide consistent support and motivation.
Regular Check-ups: Schedule regular wellness visits with a pediatrician to monitor your child's growth and development, as well as to detect any early signs of health issues.
Conclusion
Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in children is a serious health concern that demands our attention. By understanding its causes and implementing effective prevention strategies, we can empower our children to lead healthier lives and reduce the risk of developing NAFLD. Through a combination of proper nutrition, physical activity, and positive role modeling, we can ensure that our younger generation grows up with a strong foundation for lifelong well-being. "People living with diabetes might have a new hope. Scientists have tested a new drug therapy in diabetic mice, and found that it boosted insulin-producing cells by 700% over three months, effectively reversing their disease.
Beta cells in the pancreas have the important job of producing insulin in response to blood sugar levels, but a hallmark of diabetes is that these cells are either destroyed or can’t produce enough insulin. The most common treatment is regular injections of insulin to manage blood sugar levels.
But a recent avenue of research has involved restoring the function of these beta cells. In some cases that’s started with stem cells being coaxed into new beta cells, which are then transplanted into patients with diabetes. Researchers behind this kind of work have described it as a “functional diabetes cure.”
Now, scientists at Mount Sinai and City of Hope have demonstrated a new breakthrough. Previous studies have mostly involved growing new beta cells in a lab dish, then transplanting them into mice or a small device in humans. But this new study has been able to grow the insulin-producing cells right there in the body, in a matter of months.
The therapy involved a combination of two drugs: one is harmine, a natural molecule found in certain plants, which works to inhibit an enzyme called DYRK1A found in beta cells. The second is a GLP1 receptor agonist. The latter is a class of diabetes drug that includes Ozempic, which is gaining attention lately for its side effect of weight loss.
The researchers tested the therapy in mouse models of type 1 and 2 diabetes. First they implanted a small amount of human beta cells into the mice, then treated them with harmine and GLP1 receptor agonists. Sure enough, the beta cells increased in number by 700% within three months of the treatment. The signs of the disease quickly reversed, and stayed that way even a month after stopping the treatment.
“This is the first time scientists have developed a drug treatment that is proven to increase adult human beta cell numbers in vivo,” said Dr. Adolfo Garcia-Ocaña, corresponding author of the study. “This research brings hope for the use of future regenerative therapies to potentially treat the hundreds of millions of people with diabetes.”
The results are intriguing, but of course being an animal study means there’s still much more work to be done before it could find clinical use. So far, harmine alone has recently undergone a phase 1 clinical trial in humans to test its safety and tolerability, while other DYRK1A inhibitors are planned for trials in humans next year.
Perhaps most importantly, the team will soon experiment with combining beta-cell-regenerating drugs with others that modulate the immune system. Ideally this should help overcome a major hurdle: the immune system will continue attacking new beta cells as they’re produced.
The research was published in the journal Science Translational Medicine."

I've forgotten how many times that, when I've explained that my pancreas is useless, someone's responded with "oh then you can sell it on the black market." Like. Why is that your first thought???? What do you know about the black market that I don't??

Ik it's a bit of a hopeless hope, but today as I was giving my brother his insulin shot for his breakfast i was asking him if it felt nice being able to sleep on his right sode since we just changed his g7 site the previous day. he was like "I hate this and wish this wasn't a thing. I kept forgetting what side i could sleep on" and I was able to use the eversense CGM as a hopeful example. The eversense CGM is (?) A small cgm inserted into your body (like a nexplanon) and can stay for around 6 months without changing it out, and the sensor is a sticker instead of a wire sticking out of you. And the website, when I looked at it last, said they're looking into developing a year-long one as well. The cgm from my research was invented sometime in '99, and since then has been slowly getting better. I was like "you know, we can only hope that the implants work really well and can lead to more innovation. Maybe one day they'll have a pod for both insulin and glucose and you can use it to treat highs, bolus, and lows? Literally the possibilities are endless" he's 13, surely by the time he's my age (20s) there's something interesting being talked about. In the subreddit I'm in for t1d, there's diabetics in their 60s saying how this is (pumps and cgms) is an insane development for them and that they wouldn't have even dreamed something like this would ever exist to help them. I just. Idk. I want to keep him hopeful a bit. He's already bummed that pancreas transplants aren't a regular thing t1ds can opt for, and if they were I'd be first in line to give him all of mine if I had to
