I am having too many thoughts abt Dean and Hatchet Man tonight. I don't know if i can articulate them rn but I will try.
I am thinking so many things, like how David Yaeger was just a normal mechanic before he was killed (by his friends??) in a prank gone wrong. How the name Yaeger means "hunter" and Dean is a hunter. How in Mint Condition, Dean is also paralleled with another character who's first name starts with a "D", Dirk Winchell (sidenote: I always knew abt the Dirk parallel but I did not realize until looking it up today that his last name is so close to Winchester!)
And I am thinking about how Hatchet Man is basically a vengeful spirit of a once innocent human (David "Hunter" the mechanic) who didn't deserve to die, but now in death has gone the way of many victims of violent deaths and become crazed and vengeful. And I'm thinking about Dean saying his favorite movie in the franchise is All Saints Day Four: Hatchet Man Lives. And how Season Four of SPN starts with Dean's resurrection (he lives!). Thinking about Dean telling Dirk, "Ah well, growing up it was a… it was always nice to check out once in a while. I like to watch movies where I know the bad guy is going to lose." Yet throughout the episode we see Dean FANBOY over Hatchet Man and clearly root for him while watching, excited when he's on screen hunting down the people that wronged him. Like if Hatchet Man is "the bad guy" he clearly isn't losing because he keeps coming back. And Dean specifically likes the one where he Lives.
I see it two ways, simultaneously, because both can exist together. On the one hand I think empathy boy Dean empathizes with Hatchet Man on some level, and perhaps sees shades of himself in David Yaeger. On the other hand, I think these movies provide that element of escapism from his real life that Dean craves. In the Real World, Dean would have to hunt someone like Hatchet Man. He would also be on the receiving end of the hatchet which is not so fun. Hatchet Man in Real Life is scary and dangerous and a danger to other innocent people. But on TV it's all fake. Dean can revel in the suspense and the thrill of it. When it's a movie he "like[s] it when they run." Whereas in real life he's either the one doing the running or he's trying to save others being chased by vengeful spirits (as we literally see play out later in the episode).
Sam doesn't understand why Dean watches these movies when "our life is a scary movie." But I think that's precisely why Dean enjoys these movies. Not just because the bad guys often lose but because even when they don't, even when they keep coming back, Dean is still not responsible for them, not responsible for keeping everyone safe, not the one being chased. He can "check out" and "escape" into these fictional world where there are no expectations placed on him, where he is not a character in the story, where he can simply be a spectator, an audience member. It's not on him to save the town from Hatchet Man, for once.

"Edwin can help" says Charles.
Crystal raises an eyebrow at him. He smiles sunnily.
"Edwin would sell me to Satan for one corn chip," she says.
Edwin, from his spot at the desk, lowers his book enough to give her a longsuffering look. "This feels like one of your obscure internet references," he says. He still says "internet" like the word doesn't belong in his mouth.
Crystal gives him a bland smile. "The internet isn't obscure," she says. "You just don't know anything about it because you're a million years old."
"One hundred twenty four," he says, because he's a pedantic little shit.
Charles is chuckling in the corner, because he has low tastes and thinks Edwin being a pedantic little shit is hilarious.
"At any rate," says Edwin crisply, "As a fugitive from hell, negotiating with Satan would hardly be in my best interests. Also, as a fugitive from hell, I have no interest in seeing anyone sent there unjustly, much less someone I have grown... attached to."
She feels her smile warm a little at that, and turns her head so that Edwin won't see. Love you too, Edwin.
"Finally," he concludes, "I am dead, with no need to eat, and therefor have no use for corn chips. This accusation does not make sense."
Crystal chokes at the affronted dignity in his voice, but pulls her expression back under control, only turning back to Edwin when she's sure she can look disdainful without her lips twitching. Charles dying of laughter in the corner isn't helping, but she manages.
"It's a meme," she says loftily.
Edwin's longsuffering expression turns pained. "Half the time, I am sure you are making these things up to aggravate me," he informs her.
She isn't, but only because the reality aggravates him plenty without any embellishment.
"Is it working?" she asks, and finally lets herself laugh when he picks up his book again and glares daggers at her over the top of it.

One thing I genuinely think the fandom forgets or underestimates is just how weird Neil is. Like we paint him to be this carismatic, flashy, cocky bad boy, but in reality he's stingy, skittish, balks at anything more personal then his thoughts on Exy and Cannot for the life of him socialize. Like in the Raven King, right after Seth dies, he straight up goes:
"Neil had to patch things up with [Allison] somehow, but he didn't know where to start. He'd never been good at winning people over. Someone like Allison wasn't likely to be his first success. "
Neil's spent his life living on the outskirts of "average" life. Ergo, he's cagey and flighty and so far removed from normal that even among the Foxes he'll always be a little unpredictable and odd. And you know what, good for him; we all deserve an antisocial introverted asshole to raly behind.
#bless Andrew for being able to sniff that out from the beginning#because like sure he gets better as the series progresses#and he gains more confidence#and ground to stand on#but like come on#this boy has absolutely no pop culture knowledge and probably thinks NSYNC is an acronym#for some disease#because that stuff is only needed when making connections with others#and neil was never allowed to do that#aftg#andrew minyard#neil josten#the foxhole court#the raven king#the kings men#im in the trenches of my 8th reread#and my own emotions#wish me luck#mine

Prompt 68
Danny stares up up up at the being cooing down at him, a mass of eyes and tendrils and whatever else twisting in and out of portals, shattering to sand and reforming, buckling into a smaller shape and expanding in an ever moving form. This was not what he was expecting when Clockwork offered to introduce him to Chaos, but maybe he shouldn’t be so surprised.
Bonus DPxDC crossover: Clockwork introduced his lil baby ghostling to his old friend Chaos so they can set up playdates between their two kids. Klarion and Teekl are now being spotted with a white-haired boy and a green puppy that can go giant and monstrous like Teekle, to Young Justice’s (And the league’s) concern
#danny phantom#prompts#dcxdp#dpxdc#Clockwork and Chaos are akin to siblings#Now that the observants are gone he's free to adopt danny#And introduce him to his family#clockwork#danny fenton#klarion the witch boy#Klarion#Klarion is so excited to have an equally chaotic cousin whose twice as feral#DC universe is the equivalent of the daycare center for a bunch of primordial beings#They drop their kids off to have fun#Danny: Pops says I don't have to deal with consequences if I become the consequence for someone named Flash messing with time#Klarion is a slightly older kid whose already been to the daycare giving the tour to their bby sibling whose there for their first day#He doesn't mean to injure the young justice but with realms being uh#fighting is how you make friends#there's some culture differences happening#He's trying to make friends and the YJ crew are attacking and fighting so they must want to be friends too!#he doesn't like dr fate because he hurt Teekl when he was trying to play and that's so *mean*#He's gonna kick his ass if he tries to do the same thing to Cujo#Klarion is going to be so excited when he learns he has *three* whole new baby cousins#and one even destroyed a world already how adorable!

I keep seeing that post going around about how Heartstopper being properly advertised and renewed by Netflix while queer shows like Dead Boy Detectives are cancelled shows the white cis gay box Netflix feels more comfortable with. Idk, I think there's a valid conversation to be had there, but that post to me feels like such erasure of all the other representation Heartstopper has. It's deliberately ignoring Elle, Tara, Issac, Darcy, Sahar, Mr. Ajayi, and Mr. Farouk.
#and don't get me wrong i LOOOVE dead boy detectives it was such a good show!#i just think calling heartstopper for white gays is really reductive#heartstopper#elle argent#tara jones#issac henderson#darcy olsson#sahar zahid#nathan ajayi#youssef farouk#melissa og#melissa on heartstopper#melissa on pop culture

possibly controversial opinion but people who think the sum total of superman’s personality can be distilled down to “he’s nice :)” have at best a surface level understanding of him and at worst have absorbed the entirety of their view of him from random tumblr text posts.
#something about comics fandom seems to accelerate flanderization beyond the norm for other fandoms#and i suspect it’s bc a lot of people assume they already know a lot of characters simply from being pop culture icons#and also tumblr is great for spreading out of context panels and drawing wildly incorrect conclusions from them lmao#nothing drives me crazier than people who want to strip every ounce of tragedy and conflict and grief out of the story of superman#this is a man who’s life started with him being the last known survivor of an alien species#there is a deep tragedy and loneliness and grief at the core of him#denying him emotional complexity in service of just making him A Good Boy From Kansas is so boring to me 😭#clark kent#superman
