Anyway I have purged my queue of Ace Attorney (I posted it all, enjoy the the massive wall of nonsense from me.) So now it's just miscellaneous and then The New Brainrot.

There's already an image of one of these clowns on here so enjoy that.

But anyway... It's Vanitas Time.

I am unhinged about all of the characters but I am becoming absolutely unwell about the titular Vanitas himself.

He's an asshole and I like him so much.

He's unhinged. He's so disingenuous and so repressed but he's so bad at keeping his feelings in. I swear sometimes he's just dissociating in the middle of a conversation.

He's a bastard and a bitch. He hates both vampires and humans for their cruelty but not nearly as much as he hates himself.

He has completely given up on life and is sustaining himself purely on spite and guilt. He makes people hate him on purpose.

He is kind but not nice. He is the embodiment of that cat knife meme, you know the one. He is babygirl and pathetic little meow meow. I want to send him to therapy.*

His vibes are constructed entirely out of red flags. He's a bisexual man that you want to keep 20 feet away from all women at all times because geeeeez my guy learn to behave yourself. He's a sarcastic prick. He's incomprehensibly traumatized.

I want to run him over with a freight train. I want to wrap him up in a homemade quilt and give him a cup of hot cocoa. I want someone to hold him tenderly. I want that twink obliterated (gayly).

He looks and acts like a feral alley cat. His outfit is simultaneously iconic and absurd. I think he stole someone's gender. He wears gloves with claws on them.

He is terrified of genuine connection yet he craves intimacy so badly. He is a massive pile of trust issues.

He is doomed by the narrative, he is running out of time, he is destroying himself through every step of his objective. He knows he will likely destroy himself before he can ever succeed. He is terrified of losing his humanity. He calls his objective vengeance but I'm pretty sure it's actually absolution.

There is something very very wrong with him.💖💜💙

Regressor! Vanitas

He is literally the smallest baby ever, he doesn’t even speak usually. Very rarely he’ll be around three (when they HAVE to be in public but Vanitas can’t make himself stop regressing), but Noé is almost always left with trying to decipher his fussy baby’s whines and crying.

Regresses to make up for his sorry excuse of a childhood but says it’s just to relieve stress. He claims his childhood “doesn’t bother him” only because he can’t find the right words to properly express this empty hurt inside of him because of it, and he truly believes he can never actually make anyone understand how painful it is for him.

Though he denies it like his life depends on it, and claims it’s a very rare thing, he tends to regress quite often. If not during the day or after they return home, usually during their nightly routine, Vanitas will start to regress.

Noé couldn’t help but notice how quiet his partner had gotten, practically nonverbal the moment they stepped through the door. “Is that a sleepy little prince I spy?” Noé asked with a gentle voice, receiving a small whine in response. “Ohhh, my poor little baby. So tired and stressed from all that big kid work. He deserves a break doesn’t he?” The vampire walks over to the edge of his bed, where Vanitas is now awkwardly playing with his own hands. He kneels down infront of him, and looks up to Vanitas’ eyes. They were glossy and he looked about ready to meltdown. “Oh baby…Baby baby baby…shhhh” he gently whispered to his forehead as he swiftly hoisted him up to his hip. “Let’s go get your kitty little one. Would that help mon ange?” Vanitas hesitated to, and nodded ever so slightly, a shuddering breath heard. “Oh my little Vanitas, Papa’s here.” A very weak sound escaped the smaller male’s lips, one he barely forced out but couldn’t bring himself to choke down. “Papa…”

Without Noé there to guide him while regression, he honestly has no idea what he’s doing. His childhood was completely ripped from him, so he’s unsure of what he’s supposed to be doing for the most part. As long as he can cuddle his Papa though, he doesn’t seem to mind being lost. And Noé almost always has activities set up for him.

The first time he read Vanitas a bedtime story, Vanitas didn’t understand why, but he just started crying and Noé was quick to comfort him. Vanitas wanted to say ‘thank you’ but just couldn’t get it out. Noé understood.

The first time Vanitas regressed at all, neither of them had any idea what was happening, but Noé knew Vanitas needed this. He took him into his arms, not saying a word as he just let Vanitas cry to him as he apologized profusely for trying to kill him.

“No-é! Please! I’m sorry! I’m sorry I’m sorry I’m sorry!” Vanitas wept like he’d never wept before. He was crying for the first time in years into the shoulder of this vampire he’d grown so attached to he couldn’t even bring himself to kill him. He cared so deeply for this man, it was absolutely killing him. Vanitas was not supposed to love, never ever. But… “Please don’t leave Noé! Please! Please please please! I’ll never do it again!” He sobbed, grabbing tightly to the vampire’s sweater, soaking its shoulder. It was already pathetic enough he was showing such strong emotion to him, but he was literally desperate for him to continue to exist around him. He felt so small and comforted in his arms. For once in his life, he wasn’t cold and scared. He had a home to return to, someone to return to for a feeling of safety. “I won’t leave you Vanitas. I forgive you…I’m here.” Noé softly spoke, lips close to the shorter male’s forehead. This went on for hours until Vanitas finally collapsed into Noé’s arms, shivering and exhausted. “I’m here now Vanitas…I’m here…” he tucked a bit of the exhausted Vanitas’ hair behind his ear. Vanitas had hardly said anything, but he didn’t have to. Noé knew…not to the extent Vanitas had experienced but enough. But he didn’t need to understand, feeling there was enough pain in this scared boy to have more than warranted such a meltdown.

Noé once suggested Johann, Dante, and Riche could look over Vanitas if he were to run errands, and he went BALLISTIC at the thought of that ‘old man’ having to babysit him, a grown man. Only Noé can know about this secret, and even then he only knows a fraction of what Vanitas really does/wants to do.

-Sometimes they both regress, because-

If Noé even brings up regression in any conversation ever, Vanitas goes ballistic.

Noé often refers to him as “Mon ange” “Mon bébé” “Mon petit chéri” and “sunshine.” The last usually tends to inexplicably make Vanitas go very quiet, cry, or just become an extra needy baby.

When regressed, he really likes to bother Murr. Murr doesn’t mind being held like a stuffie, or being cried into by a lonely little sunshine.

His favorite pacifier is a yellow one with little suns on it.

His favorite stuffie is a Siamese cat beanie baby named Snip.

He really likes sleeper onsies, as they cover his super scarred body.

Absolutely hates talking when regressed, especially about ‘big boy topics’ like his past, his relationship with Jeanne (not a romantic one, but the fact she’s bitten him before), and especially Mikhail. However, since he tends to regress because of stress instead of using it to ease/prevent stress, he tends to find himself panicking to a stuffed animal at the thought of just existing the way he has been.

Embarrassing as it is, he really likes things intended for the littlest of babies, wanting to experience them for the first time. He has a really big interest with little items, even if he doesn’t know what they’re originally for, as his childhood is nothing but a living nightmare. So, he tends to wear diapers for comfort, and sometimes even pull-ups just for when he’s big and wants to feel safer.

Very frequent nightmares, Vanitas always running to Noé for comfort. Whether they’re already in bed together or Vanitas runs to him sobbing, Papa is immediately his first and only hope of calming down down.

-He also tends to have a-lot of night-time accidents because of nightmares.

-He is very very very very very shy about his accidents but also isn’t good at changing himself, nor does he have the mental capacity in the moment to do so, and he tends to run off and hide right after he’s realized it’s happened. Even if it is 3 in the morning, he’s just woken up to a storm and Noé is trying to help him stay calm, he’ll slide out of bed and run to hide somewhere, like the bathroom or he’ll take a blankie to hide himself in the corner. The only exception to this, is when he wakes up from nightmares. The only moment he isn’t scared to ask for anything is when he’s woken up from a nightmare, and he will hold onto a sleeping Noé, fist fulls of his shirt in his hand as he sobs and wails into his Papa’s chest for comfort. Noé, despite being a heavy sleeper usually wakes up pretty quickly when it comes to his little one.

“PAPA! PAPA PAPA!” Vanitas screams as he sits up in bed, tears cascading down his cheeks. The taller vampire sits up as soon as he hears the desperate cries, and pulls him into his lap as fast as he can. “Oh Mon Ange…shhh shhh…” he whispers, lips to the top of his head as he then placed a few kisses. “Sweet baby, Papa’s here. Calm down little one, everything will be okay. It wasn’t real sweetheart, you’re right here with me little star. It’s okay…shhhh…” Noé wraps a blanket loosely over Vanitas’ shoulders as he bawls out into the night. “I know baby, I know…”

Kitties! Lots of kitty stuffies, kitty toys, blankies with kitties on them, pacifier with a kitty on it, kitty themed play mat, kitty themed children’s bowls/plates/silverware with paw prints on it, etc. Lots of kitties! (And stars)

Follows his Papa around like a lost puppy

Refuses to do anything ‘little’ in public, and won’t even go with Noé to pick out new little stuff for himself because he thinks somehow everyone would know.

He loves having stories read to him. Even after having 10 different stories read to him, he will still hand Noé another book.

Very picky/weird about toys. He has trouble playing with toys like blocks or puzzle blocks, but really likes small figures like LPS that he can just set up and make scenes with rather than really playing with them. The only toys he really plays with are very very infantile toys that require minimal thinking and effort, like rattles and the ring stack toys.

Even when big, but especially when small, he hates asking for things.

He absolutely hates bath time, and having to let Noé see his scars, and especially his arm. Noé has never mentioned it, but they both know it’s something to be worried about. For little Vanitas’ sake though, he never brings it up in conversation. Baths are usually an ordeal neither look forward to, but Noé always makes sure he takes them when little. Vanitas will cling, and even cry, to his Papa while being cleaned in the tub until he’s wrapped in a towel and let out.

Though baths are not his favorite, Vanitas is always rewarded with Noé massaging his whole body with lotion afterwards, and it’s become part of their nightly routine when Vanitas is little. The intimacy and soothing-ness of the act is essential in getting a regressed Vanitas to sleep.

He also demands lullabies, a bottle, and a nightlight so he can sleep. If his nightlight is dead or just won’t turn on, it’s a long sleepless night for Noé and a new nightlight added to his grocery receipt that week

Cuddling > playing > napping > bath

Whines and pouts a lot

Noé is very enthusiastic about Vanitas when regressed, and gets very excited to help him into cute jammies and coo over his sweet little baby. Sometimes he hugs Vanitas a little too tightly without realizing it.

Absolutely hates crying at all, especially in front of Noé, but when it isn’t from a sudden scare, Vanitas will dash off to hide somewhere when he feels he has to cry. He’ll even curl up as small as possible and hide under the kitchen sink to cry over spilling his juice. Of course Papa comes to fetch his little one and pulls him out from under there to hold him close and help him calm down after a bit of fussing and hesitance.

He has probably bit Noé before and would absolutely do it again.

Vanitas is actually very self conscious about his inability to really be happy that often when he’s regressed. Usually the reason he feels small: he’s on the verge of a panic attack, super stressed out, or just so exhausted he’s to the point of tears. While little he can’t help but feel really tired and often sad. But Papa always tells him it’s okay to be sad and have emotions like that, and even more okay to tell him about it and express them. Crying and being sad is part of being human, and with the sensitive topic of why Vanitas regresses, it’s only human he’d be a scared little one.

Vanitas

I feel like Vanitas would also suffer from nightmares quite frequently, so it's a 50/50 chance on wether or not he's awake if the same happens for you

When he first notices your tossing and turning next to him, he honestly doesn't think much of it at first, maybe it was just one of those restless nights

But when you started whimpering and sniffling, he knew something was very wrong

And then when he faced you and saw a few stray tears running down your cheeks, fear and panic settled in his mind

"(Name)? Wake up!", he gently put urgently shook you, trying to get you to wake up

At first, it only worsened your whimpering and crying, to the point where, eventually, a single scream full of terror left your lips

Only after that did you finally wake up, but you already managed to give poor Vanitas the scare of his life

It took you a few seconds to realize what was going on, to reorient yourself, and you were even more confused when you were immediately pulled into somebodys arms

"W-what..", you began, but no further words left your lips as you didn't even know what exactly you wanted to ask in the first place

"Don't scare me like that, dummy!", he would mutter, his head resting on top of your head

"S-sorry", you mumbled an apology, gripping onto his body harder, feeling safe again in the embrace of your boyfriend

For a few minutes you two sat there in silence as you calmed down further

"Do you...wanna talk about it?", he would ask once he was sure you were collected enough again

Now it's up to you if you want to take him up on the offer, or not

If you do, he would listen to your story without interrupting you, afterwards offering you reassuring words and gentle touches

If you don't want to, that's fine too. He still whispers calming and loving words to you, gently stroking your back or arm

If you want to lay down again after some time, he would lay down with you, holding you close to him, cuddling you in his arms

It made you feel protected, loved and cared for. You easily fell back asleep like this

This time, a small smile present on your lios, even as you were in the land of dreams again...

Noé

He would be a pretty heavy sleeper, so there's a good chance he doesn't even realize that you're having a nightmare next to him

When you woke up in the middle of the night, startled and breathing heavily, you didn't remember where you were the first few seconds

As your consciousness slowly started coming back to you, you recognized the bedroom you shared with your boyfriend, who was still sleeping soundly next to you

Then, the memorys of your dream started coming back to you, once again froming tears in your eyes

A little bit later, Noé got woken up by the sound of your muffled sobs and your shaking figure next to him. When he saw you like that, panic immediately started to settle in him

"(Name)? What happened? Are you okay?", he questioned, not wasting another second and pulling you into his arms

You couldn't bring out any words, so instead, you hid your face against his chest and continued crying

It took a few minutes until your tears slowly started to dry, all the while through it, Noé gently stroke your back and whispered loving words into your ear, telling you that he would be there for you and would never leave you alone

After another few minutes, you finally calmed down enough that your breathing started to even out again and you felt a little bit more comfortable talking again

He would also ask you about what had happened and again, it's up to you if you want to talk about it right away

Just note, Noé will most definitely make you talk about it. He wouldn't force you to tell him right away, but he WILL get you to tell him one way or another, because he believes that it would be wrong and bad for you, if you kept all that bottled up inside your head

If you decide to not talk and just lay back down, he would do that with you

But this man is not sleeping anymore that night. He would be sacrificing his own rest, to watch over you and make sure that no more nightmares will come to haunt you that night

He will hold you in a protective embrace against him, gently massaging your scalp to lull you back to sleep while he watches over you, making sure that you're getting the rest you deserve

a peaceful sleeper, not a person to move much in his sleep so you won’t have to worry about him leaning over you or falling out of bed (unlike a certain someone).

He isn’t really a cuddly person in his sleep, despite his flirty persona it would actually take a while for him to get used to someone touching him and being on such close proximity while he's in a vulnerable position like sleeping, but he will slide his arms around your waist and spend the rest of the night holding you like that.

I think vanitas would be the type to have cold fingers, and that sly boy will know that and use it to his advantage to tease you.

Like slipping his cold fingers under your shirt, which will make you recoil back while the mf snickers at you.

He’s also a light sleeper, so you try not to move too much in your sleep as to not disturb him in his.

If he's in a playful mood, he would even tuck his head in the nape of your neck just to give you a teasing blow with his hot breath.

Sometimes, Vanitas experiences some nightmares about his past, and before you got together he would just make his way outside to sit on top of the roof or anywhere high to clear off his mind, but after a while of dating you, and whenever these nightmares plagued him, he would find solace in gazing at your sleeping face, shuffling his body closer to yours to feel your warmth.

Although he would only do this when you're deep asleep, so you probably wouldn't see much about this soft side of him.

you guessed it, from now on, you’re gonna be this boy's personal pillow.

The moment he wrapped his arms around you and fell asleep, there’s no getting out till he wakes up.

His hold on you is really comfy and warm though so you won’t have to worry much about being uncomfortable.

Well, excluding the times where he unconsciously rolls over in his sleep and ends up falling to the ground, of course pulling you down too since you’re basically attached to him.

Poor baby feels bad about the incident even after he apologised and you telling him its okay.

He’s also a very deep sleeper, and the amount of time you’ve had to literally shake him awake are uncountable, including this previous one cause it seemed like falling to the ground and hitting the hard wood floor wasn’t enough.

You love it when you wake up before noé, because then you can face his half-awake state and cup his face with your hands, littering some butterfly kisses all over his cheeks as you greet him a good morning.

You can feel his skin heat up as he dips his head right into the pillow so you don’t see his flustered state.

oh god, sleeping in ronald's embrace is the best and you can't convince me otherwise.

He just has the most warm and cozy embrace ever despite his muscled figure, you would feel so safe in his arms.

On most times, you're the one who would end up falling asleep first, since you would feel so comfortable in his arms that it would take mere minutes for you to drift off to sleep.

Ronald will also love to lean his forehead on yours while you two are about to sleep. To him, it feels like a small but intimate action that makes him feel even closer to you.

He will place light kisses on your temple while he’s at it too.

Usually, Ronald is the first one to wake up because of his busy schedule, but lord help you at the times when you actually wake up before him, cause you swear this man has the most adorable sleeping face you have ever seen.

His mouth will be slightly apart, light snores sounding from him and his fluffy hair would be sticking up everywhere.

Also, please play with his hair while he’s asleep, he loves it when you do.

Twirl his soft, curly hair between your fingers and he would lean his cheeks toward the palm of your hand with a soft smile on his features.

She has an attendant that spits rose petals following her around, Haruka is so jealous right now, Dominique is living the dream.

And clearly she likes to mess with Noé, but I think she has that kind of personality anyhow and I can’t wait for her and Vanitas to spend the entire time arguing and trying to outdo each other, poor Noé just attracts these people.

I have never seen this show and know absolutely nothing about it! As that is the fun of having me liveblog this, please let it be fun for EVERYONE by not confirming denying, hinting, saying things like “oh just wait til episode x’, telling me about outside interviews, or anything that is cultural or historical that I’m not picking up on! Poor Dante, he has to continually watch these two idiots flounder around each other. I mean when you think about all that he’s witnessed with these two?

Saw their chaotic first meeting and how they got off on the wrong foot despite having similar goals

Last he saw of them at that incident was Noé deciding to jump out to rescue Vanitas

Next time he sees them, they’re working together now and Vanitas is using Noé’s naïveté to take a hostage

Also sees Noé carrying and tossing Vanitas around like a sack of flour despite just meeting the day before

Next time, they all go on a trip to the catacombs and he gets to see Vanitas indulge Noé despite later finding that Vanitas knew the actual way to the chasseurs

Sees Vanitas on a date with Jeanne and literally blue screens at the sight

Talks with Domi in a way that implies he knows how Noé and Vanitas feel for each other and it’d be easier for her if Vanitas was with someone else

Though he last saw Vanitas dealing with a crisis with Jeanne, he finds him having abandoned her to rush home to Noé

Sees Noé try to sweet talk Vanitas for blood and Vanitas’s warning

Specifically notes and teases to Vanitas about him letting Noé stick around after all that

Literally calls Noé Vanitas’s sugar daddy

Sees Vanitas panic when Noé once again abruptly disappears

Has to deal with Vanitas’s reaction to Noé being taken and how he tries to make it seem like he just cares about his book but still insists on rushing to where Noé is

Actually basically everything between them he had to see when dealing with Chloe

Next time we see Dante, he has to see Vanitas prepare to potentially kill Noé and rush off to where he’s meeting Mikhail

And to think Dante hasn’t even seen all the moments they’re soft with each other but he’s still had to deal with so much. And who knows what he and the others will see by the time the current arc’s over (after all, with the state Vanitas is in especially, I’m not sure how much he’ll be able to push himself even if Dante and the other dhams catch up).

DomiJeanne!!! (for the Domesticity Meme)

1. Who cooks normally?

According to this extra Mochizuki drew, neither Domi nor Jeanne is a particularly amazing cook. 😂 Although I can’t read Japanese, I think I remember one translation (it might have been on @popopretty ‘s blog?) saying that Domi considers cooking a job for the servants, while Jeanne is mainly a foodie rather than a preparer of said food (though she does know survival cooking). So Domi probably just hires the finest chefs de Sade money can provide to make all her girl’s favorite dishes!

2. How often do they fight?

Not very often! They have a natural rapport, with each bringing out the other’s gentler side. I have a feeling most of their fights would either be related to Vanitas (Domi’s antipathy towards him is stronger than ever, even after Jeanne broke up with the human) or stem from Domi’s lingering insecurities (for example, she notices someone flirting with Jeanne and gets jealous). But with time, they’re able to work through these issues.

3. What do they do when they’re away from each other?

Since Jeanne still serves as Luca’s chevalier, most of her time is spent accompanying him during his daily routine or when he’s out on official business. In those leisurely moments when she isn’t able to see Dominique, Jeanne might read a novel, go strolling in a nearby park, or stop by one of her local cafes or restaurants for a quick bite to eat!

Domi remains part of the royal guard, and regularly practices with her sword (in addition to competing in the occasional fencing match). I don’t remember if this is canon, but I could also see her enjoying horseback riding. If she can’t spend time with Jeanne, she’ll seek out the company of her other favorite person, Noé, or write him a letter if he and Vanitas are off chasing curse bearers. She also likes to go shopping to add to her extensive wardrobe, and typically gets a new outfit, box of chocolates, etc. for Jeanne while she’s at it. Domi’s girlfriend never strays far from her mind. ☺️

4. Nicknames for each other?

Domi calls Jeanne “ma belle,” “ma chérie,” “mon amour,” “mon trésor,” “mon ange,” “ma colombe”...you get the picture! For some reason, I have a hard time imagining Jeanne using pet names, but the moment when she finally felt comfortable enough to call her lover Domi instead of Lady Dominique made our favorite de Sade blush like a schoolgirl.

5. Who is more likely to pay for dinner?

Dominique, since she’s the aristocrat.

6. Who steals the covers at night?

Since Jeanne hasn’t had many people in her life who bothered to make her feel special, Domi goes all-out with lavish presents—sweets from the most acclaimed confectionery in France, or a season’s worth of dresses, or a pretty pony. Jeanne’s gifts are equally heartfelt, even if they aren’t as extravagant. She might try to make something for Domi by hand, like a scarf and mittens, or write her a love poem (which of course Domi would treasure 🥰🥰🥰)

Maybe Domi? Jeanne might be more forgetful and prone to distraction.

Though neither is prone to swearing in public, Domi uses more profanity when they’re talking in private. Jeanne might be a cinnamon roll, but she can and will say fuck if sufficiently enraged. 🔥 Dominique thinks her girlfriend is even hotter when she curses. 😏

In both cases, their first priority would be patching up the other’s wounds, making sure they were okay, and fretting over them. Step two would involve slicing whoever was responsible for those injuries to ribbons. 🔥 Jeanne is a little better at keeping a cool head under pressure in these situations because she has more experience on the battlefield. Because both ladies have lost loved ones in horrifically violent ways, they’d be extra protective in the wake of the injury and reluctant to leave the other’s side.

11. Who kissed who first?

Domi kissed Jeanne first. They were taking a walk together through Paris and happened to be in a quiet, out-of-the-way area...so Domi used Jeanne’s parasol to shield them from any prying eyes, and gave her a smooch! 😘

12. Who made the first move?

Maybe Jeanne? After Domi’s curse was lifted and Jeanne dumped Vanitas (I leave the details to your imagination 😉) the chevalier reached out to her friend out of worry and a desire to reconnect. The letters they exchanged over the next few weeks helped repair their bond and paved the way for subsequent dates.

13. Who started the relationship?

Jeanne. As they grew closer, Domi realized that she’d fallen for the other vampire but was afraid to push her luck for fear of rejection (she stills struggles with self-esteem issues and remorse over fighting Jeanne under Misha’s influence, even though that obviously wasn’t her fault 😭). But one day while they were having tea, Jeanne worked up the courage to tell Domi point-blank that she wanted to be more than just friends, and that she understood if Domi didn’t reciprocate...but she couldn’t keep these feelings to herself any longer!!! Dominique promptly burst into tears (which left poor Jeanne more than a little confused), but then rushed over to hug the chevalier and sob out that she’d be honored to court her. 🥰

He’d never quite thought or realized that being so close to his brother while he was SICK would have consequences. His mind had entirely been occupied by worry for his brother which made him keep vigil by his bed. But in turn, HE wasn’t quite feeling that great either.

                Ignorance and that lack of medical knowledge did him NO favors as the child was standing at his brother’s door. The only obstacle between the two of them now was Noé. WHY wasn’t he moving ? He needed to make sure that his brother was OKAY !

                His protests were QUICKLY interrupted as his hand quickly came over his mouth; trying to stifle the few coughs that would force themselves out of his lungs. Oh, he DIDN’T feel good. He didn’t feel good at all. The coughs alone were irritating, but the fact he felt stuffed up and congested made it WORSE. He was helpless to struggle much as the vampire would simply pluck him off the ground. Noé’s hold was much more warm and cozy than he thought it would be. In a sense, he actually felt a sense of security being held like that. But still that didn’t mean he wouldn’t complain to hell and back !

Oh okay, so there is stuff that exists, not as sad as I feared. I’m trying to understand what Noé sees after being forced to drink JJ’s blood. Truth is, I’m surprised and confused by some of the images and to me it seems there’s a certain pattern.

At first there’s Chloé being offered a hand, most probably by JJ since these are his memories. But then underneath this memory, there’s an image of young Noé. JJ doesn’t know him, so obviously Noé’s memories are mixed in! Next to Noé there’s another set of hands but it’s impossible to tell whose those are. Above this image is a young boy. At first I thought this is young JJ but the hair style doesn’t fit at all, especially the bangs. Might this be a boy from Noé’s past? Then there are Vani and Jeanne from the scene when JJ attacked them as beast. The image underneath...hm, hard to tell, it looks like braided hair, maybe? The hair style kind of reminds me in how young Jeanne wore her hair. Finally in the left corner, there’s someone pointing a gun at the owner of this memory! As the memories before this one were JJ’s, I suspect this could be another memory of Noé. Someone threatening to shoot him... And there also are people with burning torches in the background. It looks like a vampire hunt. Might this be about how the Archiviste clan was exterminated?

Noé reaches for someone ... It might just be a gesture to emphasize he doesn’t want to “drown” in memories but stay with JJ to settle what’s happening... But following the pattern from the previous double page, the first memory we see here is Chloé and I think she holds onto young JJ who, again, has been hit by his father. His back is bleeding from whipping, it looks. Poor boy. The next memory could be one of Noé’s as there’s a female who seems to be the person Noé attempts to get hold onto. She extends her hand seemingly towards him, or whoever the owner of this memory. I admit, her appearance reminds me in Jeanne, therefore it might just be her... This could be a memory from the moment when she failed to kill Chloé.

All of these memories above could be only JJ’s but in this case I really don’t get why there undoubtedly was a young Noé at the beginning.

VnC Liveblog - Chapter 14

We start with a recap of our latest mystery -- in one week three vampires have mysteriously disappeared and the suspected kidnappers are the Church’s anti-vampire unit, the chasseurs. (should that be capped? eh, I’ll leave it for now.)

I see Vanitas still hasn’t bounced back from whatever blow he was dealt when he recognized that button. Only now he looks...sad, too?

Mentioning the Vampire of the Blue Moon in a general way makes him almost defiantly manic and driven; mentioning his quest for revenge makes him look not only lost but like he lost something, like it’s still an open wound. Mentioning the chasseurs gets you a face similar to the lost look, but he’s maybe not quite as dazed? I think it’s the difference between still being gutted and raw and being resigned to the wound, maybe? Speculating off of two textless panels is so fun and productive, guys.

Anyway, the catacombs! The catacombs of Paris are famous, y’all. LOTS of skulls, so of course it’s perfect for VnC.

Well, I hope they’re not playing poker.

(I bet you ten bucks Noé got distracted looking at the streetcar and didn’t realize it was leaving. The things Vanitas has to put up with, honestly. Aw, and Murr caught the eye of a fancy lady! That’s the real love story, right there.)

So the catacombs are a vast ossuary built inside an old system of quarries, we’re told. Twenty meters underground and roughly two hundred kilometers in length, it is said to house the earthly remains of approx. six million people.

So many skulls, guys. (Vanitas picked a good name)

Noé’s not interested in the comedy routine, though -- something else is distracting him.

I’m glad Noé’s noticed something is off about Vanitas. He’s been avoiding the ‘camera’ for a bit now, which isn’t like him. It’s almost as if he’s withdrawing to the background, an intriguing facet of Vanitas’ personality that we haven’t seen before. But Noé notices he’s gone and won’t let him slip away so easily.

(though now that I think about it, the retreat to quietness isn’t completely new -- it’s what he does when he goes up on the rooftops, after all. we just haven’t seen him get this introspective around others before.)

Hmm, vampires in the tunnels of Paris, fighting the chasseurs...this is reminding me of World War Z, ie. it sounds freaking terrifying, yikes. (er, the book, not movie version. don’t think that made it into the movie.)

“There could even be another war.”

And vampires going feral and attacking humans sounds like just the thing that could provoke another human-vampire war, don’t it. This could turn into one of our big stakes in the series. And with the introduction of Jeanne, who fought in the last war; the chasseurs, who also fought in the last war; Ruthven, who brokered the end of the war...well. It’s not hard to imagine that the board is being set up again.

(it occurs to me that if there’s a faction of vampires that actually WANTS war, a simple way of bringing it about would be to accuse the humans of causing the spread of Charlatan and the curse)

Hey, Vanitas is laughing! First time that’s happened since last chapter when he left Orlok’s office. Good job, Dante.

Noé’s still watching, though.

Vanitas looks run-down. He’ll laugh at Dante getting busted by the guards, but his mood is still extremely -- flat? tired? -- right now.

I love how Johann has no compunctions at all to cozying up to Noé. He’s like, hot guy? Don’t mind if I do.

We already know Noé is a little oblivious when it comes to people, so I think it says a lot that he’s already so attuned to Vanitas.

He knew right away that Vanitas’ reaction on the chandelier was weird (and seems to have hit the bullseye as to why) and he knows when Vanitas’ actions are a veneer over something else. He’s already started differentiating between what’s real and what’s a front when it comes to Vanitas, even if he can’t always understand what he sees (see: their dance). And they’ve known each other for what, a few weeks?

Poor Vanitas. Noé was already disinclined to go along with the most egregious examples of Vanitas’ bullshit -- now that Noé’s Vanitas Radar is getting more refined, soon Vanitas won’t be able to get away with anything. For a loner like him, that might be hard to adjust to.

(Noé looks so comfy, I wish I could sleep like that. Vanitas, don’t you think you’d be more comfortable sleeping inside with Noé, he could use you like a pillow)

omg. I’m cackling. Look at Noé standing there. Fully dressed! Leaning on the wall with one hand in his pocket! Casually reading! Ahhh, this is the best. Reminder that Noé can be hellishly smooth when he feels like it and it’s awesome.

Not only did he outmaneuver Vanitas, but he scheduled his nap perfectly because he knew Vanitas and knew his next likely course of action, even though (because) Vanitas hardly said anything during the day. This pleases me so much, you have no idea.

(and not only is the nap thing galling on principle, but now Noé is well-rested while Vanitas is walking around with visible bags under his eyes. It’s beautiful.)

It would also mean that he lied to Noé in the beginning when Noé asked if he was a chasseur or a bourreau, but. That wouldn’t be much of a surprise. And not technically a lie if he wasn’t one anymore?

Sheltered he may be, but our boy Noé ain’t no dummy.

And he knows exactly how they fight because of course he does.

This explains so much. The abilities of the vampires are on a whole ‘nother level, literally superhuman, so it’s easy to overlook sometimes that Vanitas is a really good fighter for a human.

Particularly against vampires.

He’s been doing this vampire-doctor thing for a little while now, right? Meaning, he’s been hunting down transformed and blood-mad vampires and fighting them with only one reluctant, mercenary dhampir as back-up. Sure, he latched onto Noé as a ‘shield’ immediately (probably because he had a few too many close calls and, unlike with Dante, he doesn’t have to pay for Noé), but he was still fighting -- and surviving -- the monsters long before Noé got on the scene.

So were could he have possibly gotten these vampire hunting skills? *insert thinking emoji*

(I don’t know how the Vampire of the Blue Moon fits into all this, but taken with the chasseurs, I can’t help but find Vanitas’ current vocation dryly amusing. Both these entities from his past who HATE VAMPIRES have done Vanitas wrong, so what’s he gonna do?

He’s gonna turn around and save the goddamn vampires out of spite. (...and probably for some other reason we don’t know about yet, because Vanitas, but you get the idea))

Noé just seems shocked (as he should), but Vanitas almost looks struck dumb, like he doesn’t know what to do with Disturbingly Cheerful guy.

Hmm, a couple things.

I thought this guy’s name was Roland?? @vnckocurzyca, I think you said his name was Roland? It’s got all the marks of a translation error (swapped Ls and Rs), I just want to know the right name to call this guy, lol. (and if YP screwed up the translation so I can rag on them a bit)

Another thing that might only be amusing to me -- Vanitas has been carrying a sling on his back that I’ve been assuming carries the Book, his knives, etc. But when he stands next to Cheerful Guy who has his own his massive sling (that looks an awful like some sort of improbable weapon of the Kingdom Hearts variety), Vanitas looks like nothing so much as a Boy Scout standing next to an Eagle Scout and it’s kinda hilarious.

Just think about it. In another lifetime, this guy could have been Vanitas’ senpai.

So, he got his high position sometime after Vanitas was no longer associated with the chasseurs? And he wasn’t even posted in the area until recently. Gives me reason to think he wasn’t involved in whatever happened to break Vanitas away from them.

Though it occurs to me the chasseurs might not recognize him anyway, depending on how long ago the association was (couldn’t have been that long, Vanitas is only 18 according to the omake) and when exactly he took on the name ‘Vanitas’. They might have known him under another name, maybe his REAL name, and isn’t THAT thought interesting.

...y’all. I play a lot of video games. Suddenly walking into a large room with strategically placed cover spots is A VERY BAD SIGN.

I HOPE YOU SAVED BEFORE THIS CHECKPOINT, GUYS.

Ohhh, shit. There it is. Mr Paladin was playing them the entire time and they fell for it like a pair of shmucks.

Specifically, VANITAS fell for it. Dude, the sneaky tricks are supposed to be your area of expertise. Either this guy is better than you or you are seriously off your game. (possibly both)

(...random, but Mr Paladin is reminding me a bit of Might Guy. probably the gushing emotion and positivity.)

A flash bomb? And Vanitas knows exactly what it is, knows it’s meant to hurt Noé specifically. It also means that Mr Paladin knows Noé is a vampire, probably knew it when he was gushing about all those be-fanged skull trophies. Man, you can never trust the goofy ones.

When you think about it, a flash bomb would be the perfect weapon to use against vampires in an enclosed space like underground tunnels.

I’m paying attention to how MochiJun is depicting the affects of the flash on Noé ‘cause we still know precious little about how vampires eyes, and vampires in general, work.

So, we’ve got a shattering, as if the flash caused the world to break apart for Noé, and then a disorienting swirl where his vision is completely obscured. His eyes really are his weak point.

...ohhoho, wait. Wait, wait, wait, I just remembered something.

Vanitas used the flash bomb trick on Jeanne, way back in chapter 3 --

It didn’t work as well on Jeanne, but, well, it’s Jeanne.

Mr Paladin is not only dangerous, but also creepy. And kind of dehumanizing, too, which I suppose is to be expected from this group. Not like Veronica de Sade is much better.

Alright, so. Does this mean Noé can usually see the two ‘worlds’ separately? And this is a thing all vampires can do because of their eyes, while some powerful vampires are then able to rewrite the formulas they see on a large scale? Though since Paracelsus was able to trigger Babel, that means having the innate ability to see formulas isn’t a requirement for rewriting them. And, you know, the existence of the Book.

So, if Vanitas can rewrite formulas without the Book, is that power also in his eyes, even though he doesn’t have the weird pupil-thing going on like the vampires, or does he work magic the way Paracelsus (presumably) did? Did the flash bang affect him, too? He’s not in the same kind of distress as Noé, but he had an instant’s more warning and DID cover his eyes. Hmm.

I do appreciate Vanitas’ panic over Noé’s plight, though! That’s always heartening to see.

That’s the frown of Bracing Yourself To Do Your Job. Because that’s what killing vampires is to this guy, his job. And he’s not nearly as gullible or naive as he looks.
