Shizaya Lovember Day 21: Sickness

Happy Shizaya Lovember!! Ya'll should have seen this one coming, provided you know about how frequently I write sick fics lol. What can I say? What's really telling about me is that I had it listed as one of my fluff prompts lol.

Also, I think I'll just post the complete list by the end? It's silly I haven't at this point, so I might just make a little navigation page for it.

Today I'm going to organize some miscellaneous ideas I have and put them per boy.

Shizuo first <3:

Shizuo doesn't get sick often, but when he does?? Absolutely miserable man. The first time he ever gets sick while dating Izaya, he's convinced Izaya has poisoned him, which leads Izaya to feel very hurt for obvious reasons. Izaya takes care of him and is overall quite doting, but when Shizuo finally feels better and realizes that it was, in fact, sickness all along, he's like 'oh shit I'm sorry for all the crazy accusations' and Izaya tries to brush it off which is a clear indicator to Shizuo that it Is Not Fine. What makes it worse is that Izaya is really good at taking care of him while he's sick.

They go on a road trip and Shizuo gets food poisoning for the first time in his life. While Izaya is equipped to handle fevers, coughs, and headaches, vomit is a No Go. He has to attempt to care for Shizuo while also missing out on their trip and also getting squicked out at the idea that he might get puked on. He can't help but complain.

Izaya is also pretty good at taking care of nasty cuts or infections that Shizuo has. He talks a lot of shit while he's cleaning up a red, puffy, blistery cut on Shizuo's leg or something, but his hands are as stable as a nurse's. Shizuo's also a lot less pathetic under this kind of illness or duress, so Izaya actually enjoys being doting and getting the opportunity to nag.

Shizuo losing his voice is only the second worst thing to Izaya losing his voice. You'd think Izaya would be fond of some time to just yap away on his own, but he actually misses the banter. Additionally, a whiney Shizuo who can't even whine or warn him when Izaya is being annoying and dangerously close to getting thumped is an unpredictably unbearable Shizuo indeed. When Shizuo's voice returns, Izaya is a lot more prone to quiet spells of letting Shizuo talk and insisting that Shizuo speak more. It's kind of cute.

Now for Izaya:

Izaya is actually not a terrible sick person if his symptoms are only mild. He's used to pushing through sickness and working through it because he's a nut case, but Shizuo is a ridiculously nagging nurse. He's not good at it either- not the being gentle part or the being patient part. He forgets not to yell when Izaya has a headache and asks too many questions. Izaya's so exhausted by the time he recovers that he needs an extra day of rest just to recover from Shizuo's nursing, which is... very on brand I think. Shizuo only ever uses his powers for good when it's by accident and I think that's beautiful.

A truly miserable Izaya is always going to be more of a misery to Shizuo, who is not good in helpless situations. He gradually gets better at listening and taking care of Izaya over time but in the beginning is very novice at doing simple things like fetching Izaya some medicine and making sure Izaya eats or drinks- Shizuo didn't even acknowledge Izaya as a human being up until they fell in love with each other, so regular things that he forgets to do for himself are certainly going to fall through the crack.

Izaya with an infection is a very quiet thing. When his antibiotics make him feel even worse and like he's going to catch on fire, he can't bring himself to talk very much. Of course he'll still try, but even he can only pretend for so long. It's moments like these that lead Shizuo to being able to read him so well. He becomes more aware of Izaya's suffering when he sees Izaya flashing back and forth between pretending he's fine and being absolutely too miserable to even fake a smile.

Shizuo losing his voice is the 2nd worst thing to happen to Izaya for a reason, because obviously losing his own voice is the worst. Who is Izaya if he cannot yap? He loses a lot of his cooperation and ability to pretend he ISN'T miserable when he cannot yap and focuses instead on how much pain he's in. Izaya hates pain. Worse yet that he can't tell Shizuo directly- not that he would if he were still able to lie aloud. Shizuo will also very poignantly ignore Izaya's typed out messages in Celty fashion because he's very good at reading Izaya's lies anyway- he's not going to read them in text form. To that degree though, he can be a bit relentlessly teasing to Izaya about not being able to run his mouth. It's too good an opportunity to pass up. He has, however, ruined it for himself by taking it too far and accidentally rendering an emotionally compromised Izaya to tearing up a bit- and that's never fun. Good job Shizuo, you dumb bitch.
