HUraay!! YEs!! uP & RUNNnniiinnggGGG, THANK GOODNESS

Since we had the KnY fast pass I thought they might try to offer me some second chance to use it if the ride never opened that day, but I was so worried for Reichel that this would be her only chance (and like, this was the purpose of the timing of her trip halfway across the world). Ahh… as Nezuko would say, “y… yoKAtta ne…!”

So without further ado:

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba XR Ride - Race to Swordsmith Village

This is the kind of ride where it is not at all unusual to wait over three hours, even on a weekday, and that is why we only rode it once. The KnY fast pass turned out to be a huge help in this way, though we still had a little bit of waiting to do.

This is because there are a few stages of the line which are part of the experience. Television screens with information about the concept of the virtual reality you’re entering and basic info and warnings about the ride gave us the idea that the Swordsmith Village is under attack, and that carts have been prepared to help all the villagers evacuate, though it might be a bumpy ride that goes fast and has drops and stuff. Better that than being eaten by giant fish monsters, I suppose. As you get closer to boarding the ride, the televisions get more detailed about instructions for making sure your VR headset is on correctly.

The first stop in the line (unless you’ve been constantly stopping for hours) is a photobooth. They keep this moving along quickly by simply telling you what pose to do, and we were told to do hearts–probably because we were with the Love Hashira, but perhaps the photographer was a Giyushino shipper?

(Reichel nailed it, but I wasn’t totally prepared for the heart pose. Had I seen the set-up, I’d have had fun with it looking like Nezuko is about to attack me. For that matter, Mitsuri, watch out!! Nezuko’s neck is too close for comfort to your sword!!)

The next stop is where you are first brought into the story, together with a group of other people–but in the story, you are a lone swordsmith apprentice who has been hiding and hasn’t managed to get away yet! Mitsuri, Muichiro, and Genya are all in the workshop you’re hiding in, desperately looking for the sword to bring to Tanjiro, when they notice you are there and they are very concerned that you haven’t escaped yet.

Although they want to ensure your safety directly, the Hashira have been called out to go battle demons! They leave you and Genya to keep looking for that sword, for they must go protect you from afar. Genya is agitated because of the tense situation and how desperately he’s looking for this sword, but he’s not taking it out on you–instead, he’s depending on you for your help.

You and Genya go on to the next room of the workshop, a room in which you are surrounded by screens for a scene that takes place all around, and the sword is located in the middle of the room. Genya doesn’t notice it at first, but then is very relieved that you’ve found it–but just then, a giant monster fish appears on the screens next to Genya! It’s going to attack you!

BLAM! BLAM!! Genya and his glock take that fish out, as well as fish that were showing up behind you on the other side of the room–BLAM, BLAM!!

Just when it seems you might be safe, there’s a giant fish monster right behind Genya!! Try though you might to warn him, you’re too late–it snatches him up, lifting our big tall hero right off the ground. With whatever freedom he can manage, Genya is still blasting the other fish showing up to attack you–BLAM! BLAM, BLAM!!--and though he kicks and struggles, he nonetheless shows no fear for himself as he implores that you take the sword and deliver it to Tanjiro. Genya is then carried away, out of sight, still in the clutches of that fishy monster!

You must go on, for you are but a swordsmith apprentice and have no way to help dear brave Genya. You must see through this task that was entrusted to you.

As you presumably carry the sword (note: you are not carrying anything), you go down a few more hallways that have television screens set up to make it seem like you are peeking out the windows of broken wooden buildings. Look, in the distance, there goes Mitsuri! And there goes Muichiro! Hashira are so fast and amazing, wow–ah!! More fish monsters!!

Thankfully those fish monsters prowling around out there don’t seem to have noticed you. You finally reach the part where there are more specific instructions for how to wear the VR headset that the staff will soon hand to you. Then came my favorite scene on the television sets: it’s you! A nervous swordsmith in purple work clothes, a haircut similar to Kanamori, and of course, a Hyottoko-style mask. This scene features your stand-in character nervously making sure the black sword is securely fastened to the front of the cart, and then sitting back and fidgety with nerves while waiting to depart, and ducking at the sound of demons outside. Your stand-in character then notices a VR headset in the cart, looks it over curiously, and then puts it on over the mask–whoa!! Wow! Everything looks amazing!!Or at least, the surprised body language gets that point across.

And then the real-life staff hands you your VR headset and guides you into your two-seater car for the ride. What you see inside is the front of the cart, which is a platform-like area with the sword firmly secured in front of you. If you look down to your clothes, you see you are in purple workclothes, and if you look around, you see you are all alone. The cart rattles as it starts moving, out of the safety of the workshop and to the wide open nighttime forest.

You don’t get far before Mitsuri appears!! She hops on to the cart and is relieved that you’re ok, and that you found the sword, but she’s worried because you still haven’t gotten away yet! Just then, Zouhakuten appears! She and the demon do a little trash talk, and then you go sliding down the backs of big wooden serpents, AAAHH–!

--suddenly you are in the village. It’s terrible. It’s burning and there are fish demons prowling everywhere, and AH!!! Gyokko, in his full fishy form! Never fear, Muichiro swoops in to protect you this time, likewise urging you onwards to bring that sword to Tanjiro. Things get rattled around again as you get swept up in another Hashira and Upper Moon face-off.

And you think, oh boy, yay, next we’ll see Genya again! He must have turned into his demon form after that giant fish carried him off. You are about to be attacked by a giant fish, but you are saved in the nick of time by none other than---Nezuko???

Sure, we’re always happy to see Nezuko, especially looking so powerful in her advanced demon form, but what about Genya? No wait, now it’s Tanjiro! He joins Nezuko on the platform of your cart and sincerely thanks you for bringing his sword. He assures you that now he can fight. He tells Nezuko to keep protecting you.

And in all this time… not even a background glimpse of Genya? Surely he’ll make a cameo, right? Where is he???

Next thing you know, Tanjiro holds the sword out to Nezuko, who lights it on fire (which is a pretty cool effect with it right in front of you), and then Tanjiro goes off to keep fighting Hantengu for the big finish! Yay! Oh boy, big drops and rattling! AAAAAH!!!

And little by little, the sun in the background is rising? Oh no, Nezuko!! Alas, there is no time on this ride to fret over her. As the sun gets warmer and brighter and the ride slows to a stop and everyone thanks you again for your help, Nezuko stands off to Tanjiro’s side, still in her muzzle and advanced demon form, but basking in the sunlight as she gives you a beautiful, somewhat bittersweet smile, like right before she would have accepted being baked except that we see she very peacefully is still standing in the sun, uncooked…

…and then the staff claps and welcomes you back, but…

……..but you never saw Genya again after that fish carried him off.

…………oh, Genya. Poor, poor Genya.

We must presume he gave his life for you. To a fish.

Hello from Reichel and Buri ( @demonslayedher )! This is going to be another multi-part, tag-team post to finally encapsulate our KnY-focused missions together last month. We’ve finally compiled everything about our biggest mission: Universal Studios Japan and their Kimetsu no Yaiba events!

Last year I went to Japan for the first time. It was a guided tour through Tokyo (and other countries in South Asia) because I was afraid to venture out on my own. But since I would already be on the other side of the world, I arranged a little detour to Osaka to meet Buri. We didn't get much time together, but we did make the most of it.

I went to Universal Studios Japan on Friday while she was working, because I had wanted to visit Super Nintendo World ever since it opened. I had a blast, and the best was that I got to meet Princess Peach and take a picture with her.

But deep within my heart, I was also sad that the Kimetsu no Yaiba ride and restaurant had ended a long time before I arrived. Then, shortly after I came back to my country, it was announced that they would be running again for a couple of months in 2024.

I was SO tempted to go back in April and celebrate my birthday in Japan, but Buriko was going to be on this side of the pond and also… going back to Japan in less than six months didn’t seem like the most sensible thing for my wallet.

But! Then after some time… a new KnY event at USJ was announced! The theme was the Swordsmith Village (yeah, I know, that was so last year) and it would be running from July 19, 2024 to January 5, 2025, a wider window of time to plan a trip. I talked to Buri and she was up for it, so we looked for a time when she wouldn’t be as busy with work so we could go together and have a KnY special day at USJ. (The whole trip would be very KnY-focused, since that’s what brought us together, but it wouldn’t be limited to that, and she was so very kind to host me for the time I was visiting).

The first thing after getting my plane tickets was to set the date for our USJ visit. Even though we’d have a whole day at the park, riding the XR Ride was the priority, of course (and checking out the exclusive merch), so we decided to get a fast pass that also included an entry to the restaurant without making a line and the new Kny-themed popcorn bucket. So, with our entry tickets and our fast passes secured, we only had to wait for the day to come.
