Compiling all the little details for my MLP AU (now named the Stars and Sun AU) in one post so that I can come back to it, add onto it and so on. Yay!

Dr. Twilight Sparkle is the head researcher and astrophysicist at the Canterlot School of Science and Magic at only 26 years old! Wow!

Spike, age 17, is Dr. Sparkle's only apprentice and closest confidant

Dr. Sparkle's relationship with her parents is messy, but she's very close to her brother, Shining Armor (who is a diplomat)

Twilight got her degree at only 19 due to how genius she was at such a young age

Twilight is the only member of the Canterlot School who speaks with and hears from Queen Celestia on a regular basis

Spike's family used to live in the Dragon lands but moved to Canterlot when he was a baby

Spike is very proficient at magic, hence why he is allowed to be Twilight's apprentice

Apple Jack is the sheriff of Ponyville and main apple cider brewer in town

AJ and Pinkie's moms are cousins

AJ is a heavy drinker and most nights can be found in the town's combined bakery and bar drinking her woes away

Rainbow Dash is the deputy sheriff of Ponyville and local daredevil

RD used to want to be part of the Wonderbolts performers and the Wonderbolts search and rescue team but later found that being a police officer works better for her

RD is usually the officer who bails Scootaloo out of trouble because she is the only one Scoots listens to

Pinkie Pie often lives in the combined bakery and bar, Sugarcube Corner, with her aunt and uncle, but is a wanderer at heart

Pinkie's family are gem miners for the Queen’s treasury and are very strict about their jobs

Rarity von Gemhouser is from the second most affluent family in Ponyville and is the second daughter

Rarity is the only seamstress/tailor and so on in town and one day hopes to have a fashion brand in Canterlot

Rarity’s older sister, Trixie, is estranged from the von Gemhouser family due to her interest in stage performing. Rarity doesn't like to talk about her older sister

Fluttershy’s family is made up of changelings who didn't want to live under Queen Chrysalis's rule anymore. They have all disguised themselves as pegasai to hide their true identities

Fluttershy is the local vet and loves healing little animals

Fluttershy and Zecora are good friends and often swap techniques

Queen Celestia has the gift of prophecy, which has led to her becoming quite paranoid

Kin was trotting up the street, pulling the snack cart behind her. She was having a bit of a stretch to keep up with the bouncing Pinkie Pie! The Royal Guardsponies at the door to the Police Station where the trials were being held were at the ready and, while one stayed to guard the door and cart, the others simply started grabbing boxes and assisting with the big urns of fresh coffee, Rom black tea and hot chocolate. Nobody was surprised that Pinkie had thought of the guardsponies as well as Tribunal.

As they were finishing the snack set up, Princess Luna interrupted to say, “Sis, this lovely mare is Kindred Spirit, the one that I told you about. Kin, this is my Sister Ruler of Equestria, Princess Celestia. If you would, please take a moment to look over the charges here. Have we covered everything?”

Kin took the offered copy of the sheets of charges and the current results. She glanced through them and handed them back. “No, your Highness, there is a charge that needs documentation and to be added to the lot.”

Twilight's eyebrows rose in question, “What have we overlooked?”

“Your Highness, look into extortion. They have been tapping the tills of at least sixty seven businesses for 'voluntary contributions' which guarantee Celestia's blessing. Failure to make the payments can result in anything from broken glass, robbery, or even arson. The Ponyville Police have never solved a single case where 'Celestia's blessing' was withdrawn.

“That is not surprising. The cases were all investigated by the same five officers presently included in this trial. They were also the Temple's muscle who did the damage.

“I would be happy to assist in the investigation of four such cases, particularly the arson case connected to Minty's Sewing and Tailoring.”

Twilight's mouth formed an O of surprise and she nodded to herself. Muttering, “Of course, you read minds,” she set to quick work with her pen and handed the sheet to a waiting officer.

Turning to Kin, she sipped some tea before asking, “I know that you can read minds, but usually don't. How did you come across this and why that specific case?”

“Simple, Your Highness. Minty came along with Pinkie Pie to help sew up costumes. She mentioned it and, because she was a friend, I looked a bit for the particulars of her business' fire. When I came here, I double checked with this assortment of sludge lumps. Their minds confirmed what I found from Minty and quite a lot more. I just told you what I learned.”

Celestia gazed thoughtfully at Kin and commented, “Kin reads minds? Somehow that was not in the reports that you gave me, Sis.”

Luna shrugged both wings and shoulders at the same time as she replied, “She almost never does it and then only with restraint. Compared to the other things that she does, it is the least important thing about her. Our State Secrets are safe and that is what matters. I will brief you fully after this trial is done.”

Luna paused to work her way through a strawberry mint cruller before asking, “I did not see income from the extortion in their books. How did they hide it or did they report it at all?”

Kin smiled, “They just bundled it into the collections from regular services.”

Tightcollar thumped the defendants table and snarled, “You can't that THAT VILE MARE'S word for anything! She was profiteering from the massive act of lewdness that we were trying to stop!”

Princess Twilight asked curiously, “Oh, how was the Carousel profiting from it?”

Officer Overmark returned snidely, “You really think that them costumes and all was free? They got to be cutting themselves a fat hog on them.”

It was Pinkie Pie who cut in, “Guess what, Officer Stinkbug? They aren't charging a single copper bit for any of it! I talked to Rarity about it and she isn't even claiming it as a loss on her taxes. Said that if she did, it would not be her charity any more. It would be the Principality's.”

“Then why bother? Ain't she got no business sense? Any trace of morality?”

Kin snorted, “Look who's talking! You steal other ponies' money and wreck their property. You drove Minty out of business and then bitch about her going into dancing for the money that she needed for rent and food after YOU destroyed her shop! You are the ones who don't have any trace of morality!”

Luna grinned, and there were fangs in her grin as she asked, “Fascinating. Officer Overmark. You are under a Bridge of Dream. Did you have any part in damaging any of Ponyville's businesses?”

He looked away, eyes gone shifty as he tried to figure a way to evade the very direct question. “Um, I, uh, wasn't there when them fires started.”

Kin cheerfully filled in, “His actual answer is yes, Your Highness. He left bottles of lamp oil with a long wick that had a candle burning on it. That gave him and the others a good half hour to be away before the fire got going.”

“You is putting words into my mouth! That ain't fair!”

“Fair? You ruined the businesses and livelihoods of ponies whose only desire was to be allowed to keep the bits that they earned. You call that fair?”

From over by the snack table, Pinkie Pie chimed in, “Yep. They do call that fair! They are totally wrong, but as long as they can steal nightshift snacks too, they call it fair!”

Twilight chuckled around a mouthful of chocolate topped and strawberry filled Bismark as she admonished, “Pinkie, I know that this proceeding is informal, but it is a trial. Please hold your interruptions to a minimum. Kin is in a unique position here due to her ability to read minds.”

Turning back to the no longer Officer Overmark, she asked directly, “Aside from putting words in your mouth, Mister Overmark, was what Kin said accurate? Is that how you were not there when the fires started? Before you consider a wordy dodge, only say yes or no.”

A predator will be attending Milwaukee Ponyville Ciderfest

Content warning: sexual abuse, self-harm, online harassment, and the propositioning of a minor

The person’s name is Kaitlin Hahn. Aka, SilverMoon, aka RainbowDashie5.0, aka rockcandypower43. [Addendum: aka Rainbowdashloverocks]

Earlier this year it came out that Kaitlin had prompted a 16-year-old for a sexual encounter. This was published in a compilation document posted online by a man with the username Reverend Shadow. He had compiled stories, screenshots, and links of people acting dangerously in the MLP community (and by extension the Furry and Sonic game community). The document went through several revisions and address changes, and you can read the non-Google doc version on Wordpress. You can just read the sections about Kaitlin, but the entire thing is useful.

The person who first told me about the document was Blackjack (John Bergeman). The events were also acknowledged to me as real by her boyfriend, Gage O’Laughlin. Gage has been my friend since college, and were former roommates and co-workers for years after graduation. Kaitlin has also admitted to what she has attempted with a minor in different formats. Kaitlin made a strange YouTube apology video, where she vaguely acknowledged she did something “extremely wrong” with a 16-year-old. As well as harassing an 11-year-old.

Even the apology video was done shadily. It was set to private, and posted on her second more obscure YouTube channel. All so that fewer people would ever see her admitting fault. I only first saw it because someone shared the private link with me. The link that I’m sharing with you is just Reverend Shadow recording of it. (The original video was called “ I am willing to change.” The recording Reverend Shadow posted has a different, much more specific title). Her video came after the evidence about her was made public. A more immediate confession was when she got blocked by then-boyfriend Gage O'Laughlin (He’s unfortunately gotten back with her), she began messaging a friend of ours named Jared Miller Christian. She was begging him to convey her messages to Gage, begging Gage to unblock her, and admitting “I sent that thing to that 16-year-old because I was fucking horny.”

This is a well-known pattern of Kaitlin’s. Someone doesn’t want to talk to her, so she spams them with calls and messages. Then if she gets blocked, she begins spamming them on different services like Facebook, Discord, or even over games like Animal Crossing. If none of those get a response, she begins bothering a shared mutual to pass along a bunch of her messages. Kaitlin has been an abusive person for years. Nothing that would qualify getting banned from a convention or calling the police, but once the story dropped about how she wanted to have sex with a minor, everything that happened with her really illustrates how irrational she is. How little regard she has for other people.

Years before this story broke of propositioning a minor (and trying to cheat on her boyfriend Gage O'Laughlin again), we kicked her out of the Milwaukee Bronies group because she was a jerk to everyone, and threatened someone on Facebook. There was a dude who was selling a few plushies; Kaitlin offered money for one that WASN’T for sale. When the guy kept politely saying “no,” she threatened to call the police to his address for ‘false advertising.’ Plenty of people in Milwaukee Bronies can tell you that story, including our leaders.

On February 26th of 2024, John Bergeman (aka Blackjack, who has worked with Ciderfest very often) blocked her because she had been pestering him over something. She got so upset, she created a new group chat with him and Jared Christian, where she threatened to kill herself if Blackjack didn’t answer her phone calls. Jared then called me, because he was so freaked out. Someone had to call the nonemergency number, even if we had our doubts she would actually do anything. After this, she had to have a stint in a mental hospital. When she got picked up that night, it turned out neither of her parents knew where she was actually was at the time. Kaitlin‘s parents are divorced, and she is barred by Illinois law from living on her own. In actuality, she had been staying over at the house of a different, cheating on her boyfriend. (She also apparently tried convincing her sister, to join them). This lover had met her because he had been hired by her parents to drive her to work. He was mostly paid through subsidies granted by the state of Illinois. That used to be a job performed by her Gage, until he had to move back to his home state Wisconsin, and their relationship became long distance. These are screenshots from that night.

On June 10th, 2023, Simone Smudde and Matt Rypel were married. They are the leaders of Milwaukee Bronies, and everyone in the group got invited. Kaitlyn obviously wasn’t; Simone has said that before Kaitlyn was booted, she made Simone anxious just by being around her. Kaitlyn always hated being banned from group meetings, and generally hated it when Gage was spending time with anyone and it didn’t involve her. Gage gave me a lift in his car to the ceremony in Wisconsin, and we bunked at his parents’ house for the 22nd and 23rd. Throughout the 22nd, Kaitlyn kept calling him to demand he cancel his attendance, and leave me to figure a way there myself. Then on the 23rd, she threatened Gage and Blackjack to kill herself for attending the wedding without her. That all the Bronies wanted her dead. She also laid out some offensive remarks about the bride and groom. At the couples’ request, I will not be making those personal comments public. But they have been shared with the con staff.

These messages were being before and during the ceremony, and were then shared with me in deep exasperation during the dinner. I have not posted them in any particular order.

A few days later that June, Kaitlyn got hospitalized. She got on someone’s birthday party stream (on FaceTime, I think) and began stabbing herself with thumbtacks. Person C was attending that stream. Person C texted this information with Blackjack, who shared the screenshots of those texts with me. (I’m not using Person C’s name because I have not had the chance to reach out to them and ask their permission.)

As disturbing as this is, it wasn’t an actual attempt on her life. This was Kaitlyn being as alarming as she could be to punish the people she felt had wronged her. She tries to control people using guilt, alarm and anxiety. I first saw behavior in that same vein in 2021, a year into Gage first dating Kaitlyn, after he and I had moved into a new apartment together. For now I will not be going into detail out of respect for Gage's privacy and his own abuse. But it HAS been shared with Ciderfest. I know it's wishful thinking, but I do hope he listens to the advice of all his friends and family and cut her out of his life.

I never met her sister Lexi, but Kaitlin has been making her sister feel unsafe as well. Recently she told Lexi that if she didn’t do what Kaitlin wanted, Kaitlin would lie to Reverend Shadow to put Lexi’s name on the document naming sex predators & enablers. Fortunately, Kaitlin made this threat on a livestream, and he recorded it.

Her sister I feel bad for, because she’s also disabled and doesn’t really have the ability to go anywhere else. One of the people I've talked to while creating this is Lexi’s confidant. Meanwhile, the parents are either unable or unwilling to do anything to restrain Kaitlin. I have spoken once with her father, Merlin Hahn, since I read about the allegations. It was on a phone call with Gage. Besides Merlin acknowledging that the events happened, he claimed that it wasn’t pedophilia. His excuse was that Kaitlin’s mental diagnosis made her like a middle schooler. I told him that besides that not sounding like something defensible, I asked why he accepted years of Kaitlin dating some men her age or older, and did not share a similar cognitive diagnosis. Men who he did not also consider middle schoolers. He did not have an answer.

Everything I've wrote above was presented to the con staff on October 9th, and I was only told about the current decision to let her attend October 26th. And that was just because I asked. I was told "Royal Guard and leadership are very aware, are vigilant about it and handling. If they do show up and if they do cause ANY problems. Please let me or any Royal Guard know."

I had provided a link to where the story first broke, recorded conversations, as well as my experiences with Kaitlin Hahn over the years. I promised that "If anything I��ve given you seemed falsified, or too vague, please let me know so I can provide details, fix my error. I’m willing to do a video interview, or help set one up with someone else." The only reassurance I got was "Really they are being watched with a magnifying glass." But I don't get the point of a magnifying glass, or security camera, or some other looking device metaphor, when something obviously harmful has been observed, and no action is taken.

Kaitlin did not attend Whinney City 2024. I had mistakenly thought she was prohibited from coming by the convention itself. But actually, the reason she didn't come to Schaumburg is because Gage O'Laughlin was too angry with her to provide a ride or a room. A few months later, any misgivings Gage might still have he's chosen to ignore.

Kaitlin is still coming to Ciderfest. Just as she has in years past, and I'm sure plans to in the years to come. The thought process behind allowing her in seems like it treats the convention as some kind of vacuum, that what a person says and does outside of it doesn't matter for the people attending. Or that the people who run the con somehow don't have the right to alter anything. They won’t take real action unless something happens WITHIN the location and timeframe of the convention (or if Kaitlin dropped an extremely specific threat). I asked permission from Ciderfest if I could include the names of the staff members I spoke to about this, and I was not given permission. I can attest though that they were important people, and have a reputation for responsibility. While reaching out to con staff, I was repeatedly told how busy they were. If that affected the outcome of this decision, or stopped them for noticing Kaitlin's behavior in the first place, then I strongly recommend they reserve more of their time and effort for keeping congoers safe as possible. Of the people I've named in these events, most of them I have reached out to for permission to use their names. They never spoke to me about anyone from the con reaching out for their accounts, or confirmation of events.

No, I don't think Kaitlin is going to assault or touch anyone while the at the convention. I just firmly believe a person like this just shouldn't be allowed in our spaces. It feels gross on its own, being in the same room as someone like that. Parents bring their kids to this convention. But I also sincerely feel like this could lead to problems down the road. Letting unbalanced abusers walk around puts a veneer of normalcy on them, that lets them get closer to unsuspecting people. As for people who DO know about Kaitlin's abuses, this sets the precedent that these things won't be opposed, that the abuser won't lose any privileges. So other abusers won't feel apprehensive in acting this way, and victims won't feel like there's a point in speaking up and seeking help.

A person who does all this shouldn't get to be included in our convention community; not be given the same privileges, and not nearly the standard of trust given to the rest of us who've done nothing wrong. Feeling like we can open up to complete strangers, and feel safe, is part of what makes these conventions so wonderful. Regardless if Ciderfest/Whinney City don't take preventative action, I hope this information will prevent anyone from approaching this bully and predator unsuspectingly.

while i was looking into some grimdark/dark mlp stuff (apple sleep experiment & silent ponyville 2, to name a few), i've realized that i actually had some dark au ideas for sonic of all things.

which would've sound strange to me if not for the fact that my favorite au is the murder of me

one of these ideas i've already rambled about ((sonic) the music box), but the others not so much.

which is why i'm taking this opportunity to talk about them :D

explanations down below!

dark rider

dark rider is a sonic x ghost rider crossover au. it started out as me taking scenes from the movie but putting sonic characters in it but over time i added lore that leaned more towards the comics

to summarize, sonic makes a deal with mephiles to save his dad's life only to end up accelerating his death and later on turn into the titular dark rider (aka shadow) to defeat eclipse and give him the contract.

now the young mechanic has to fight demons while facing his own and deal with the typical problems that come with having an super-powered alter ego.

like running from the police, ending up in a accidental love triangle with your childhood friend and crush because she thinks that your identities are different people, and finding out that you're actually a reincarnated soul!

wait. what was that last part?

2. something's up with sonic + untitled idea

okay so you know sonic.exe, right? the spooky scary 'I AM GOD' hyperrealistic stuff?

yeah so i'm not a big fan of creepypastas, but they do have some neat concepts so naturally i came up with not one but TWO ideas based on them because i'm so normal~

the first is called something's up with sonic and it's set in a universe where instead of sonic dying in the first encounter and becoming a vessel for spooky eldritch being #420, he actually survives by the skin of his teeth and beats the crap of it

HOWEVER this comes with the cost of its powers passing down to him and he has to grapple with these abilities because actions have consequences

he's still himself, but now he's capable of changing the very fabric of his reality! fun times!

the second is more or less a traditional creepypasta except the main protag is not the person who finds the spoopy haunted sonic game, but the soul haunting it after he dies by accident only to wake up as the titular hedgehog.

while processing the new reality he's trapped in, his friend and family are trying to look for him on the other side of the screen. it's not a bone chilling horror story, it's a mystery with supernatural elements

3. venom

another crossover au but with venom. like with the dark rider au, sonic isn't the hero of mobius, but a humble reporter living in the city of grand metropolis where the company of hexaeco (credit goes to TheLavaGolem88 for giving me the idea!) is conducting 'research' on a alien species that they have discovered

and by research, i mean taking people unnoticed by the world and conducting experiments on them.

sonic finds this out when a friend of his goes missing. with the help of a scientist who chose to rebel against the company, he goes into their secret labs and unknowingly becomes a host of one of the black arms.

one chaotic meeting with his friend amy and jump into a lobster tank later, he finally meets the symbiote shadow and the two work together to stop hexaeco and save the world.

Okay, I'll try to write a script for an episode of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic based on the Always Sunny episode titled "Making Dennis Reynolds a Murderer" in which Twilight Sparkle assumes the role of Dennis and Pinkie Pie takes the place of Maureen. Here's what I came up with:

[INT. PONYVILLE POLICE STATION - DAY]

[We see a montage of various newspaper clippings, photos, and evidence related to the death of PINKIE PIE, a former earth pony who had surgery to become a bat-pony. The headlines read "BAT-TY!", "WINGED WONDER OR WICKED WITCH?", and "WHO KILLED PINKIE?". The theme song of the show plays, but in a darker and more ominous tone.]

[Cut to an interrogation room, where TWILIGHT SPARKLE, a smart and studious unicorn, is sitting across from DETECTIVE APPLEJACK, a tough and honest earth pony.]

DETECTIVE APPLEJACK: So, Miss Sparkle, you claim that you have nothing to do with the death of your ex-friend, Pinkie Pie?

TWILIGHT: That's right, detective. I haven't seen her in months. We had a very friendly breakup. No hard feelings.

DETECTIVE APPLEJACK: Really? Because we have evidence that suggests otherwise. For example, this letter that you wrote to her, threatening to cut off her friendship if she didn't stop her bat-pony transformation.

[She shows TWILIGHT a letter that reads "Dear Pinkie, You are a crazy and weirdo freak. You are not a bat. You are not a pony. You are an abomination. If you don't stop this madness, I will make sure you never see my face again. You have been warned. Sincerely, Twilight."]

TWILIGHT: Oh, that. That was just a joke. A little prank. We used to do that all the time. She knew I was kidding.

DETECTIVE APPLEJACK: A joke? A prank? That's your defense?

TWILIGHT: Yes, detective. It's called humor. Maybe you've heard of it.

DETECTIVE APPLEJACK: Humor? This is not funny, Miss Sparkle. This is serious. A pony is dead. A bat-pony.

TWILIGHT: Well, technically, she was never really a pony to begin with. She was an earth pony who mutilated herself into a bat-pony.

DETECTIVE APPLEJACK: That's not for you to judge, Miss Sparkle. That's for the court to decide.

TWILIGHT: The court? What court? You don't have any proof that I killed her.

DETECTIVE APPLEJACK: Oh, we have plenty of proof, Miss Sparkle. Plenty of proof.

[She shows TWILIGHT another letter that reads "Dear Pinkie, I hate you. I hate you so much. You are the worst thing that ever happened to me. You ruined my life. You are a disgrace to ponykind. I wish you were dead. In fact, I'm going to make sure you are dead. Very soon. Watch your back, Pinkie. Watch your back."]

TWILIGHT: Okay, okay, okay. That one was not a joke.

DETECTIVE APPLEJACK: No kidding.

TWILIGHT: But it was not a threat either.

DETECTIVE APPLEJACK: Then what was it?

TWILIGHT: It was...a song.

DETECTIVE APPLEJACK: A song?

TWILIGHT: Yes, detective. A song. A very musical and catchy song.

DETECTIVE APPLEJACK: A song about killing your ex-friend?

TWILIGHT: Well, yes, but it was metaphorical.

DETECTIVE APPLEJACK: Metaphorical?

TWILIGHT: Yes, detective. Metaphorical. It was not meant to be taken literally.

DETECTIVE APPLEJACK: Then what did it mean?

TWILIGHT: It meant...it meant...it meant that I wanted to kill the part of me that still cared for her.

DETECTIVE APPLEJACK: Oh, please.

TWILIGHT: No, really. It was a very sweet and sentimental song.

DETECTIVE APPLEJACK: Miss Sparkle, do you think I'm stupid?

TWILIGHT: No

DETECTIVE APPLEJACK: Do you think I'm an idiot?

TWILIGHT: No

DETECTIVE APPLEJACK: Do you think I'm a moron?

TWILIGHT: No

DETECTIVE APPLEJACK: Then why are you lying to me?

TWILIGHT: I'm not lying

Lyra and Bonbon, I found the 2 amulet (Alicorn amulet) from the street near the Ponyville. Idk if it is fake or real, so could u 2 wear to test it? (Sorry, I miss something so fixed it)

What? No dude. Turn those in to the guard.

There's no way to confirm it, but when Trixie was under the amulet's influence, she may have tried to kill Rainbow Dash. That's no joke. That thing is brain poison.

That's like if a human found a gun on the ground. You don't try to figure out if its real or not. You don't touch it and you call the police. Even if you don't like the police, that's at least something they can handle.

POSEY THE KAREN

WARNING: (Spoilers in this essay).

When My Little Pony: A New Generation come out, it did something totally different and totally new for MLP. It explored racism - not just in terms of individualistic fears like Ponyville's terror of zebras. It dug deep and gave a bold commentary on actual systemic racism. Season 8 had touched on the subject with Chancellor Neighsay, but even then, it was all about the personal prejudices of individuals in power, not systems of power in action, nor deep rooted cultural fears.

I've written about this in multiple essays since MLP:ANG dropped last September - how, in Maretime Bay, hatred and paranoia are actually an industry - a foundation for a society - an economy of fear.

In the latest special, Make Your Mark, we get to see just a little bit of how that culture continues to linger, even after magic is restored to Equestria. Here, prejudice is painted as a type of petty jealousy hiding behind a faux concern for public safety. A unicorn filly accidentally ruins an earth pony's sandcastle with an umbrella that she couldn't hold on to with her unstable magic. Pegasi drop from the sky, hurting earth ponies. And there's bitterness. Resentment. And something of a grass roots anti-immigrant movement fomenting.

The whole dynamic takes on fascist undertones as Posey galvanizes this general discontent into a rallying cry against magic itself, and the foreigners who use it. To understand fascism, you have to recognize that it's not simply emperors like Sprout commanding from on high - it's also an invitation for members of socially dominant groups to actively engage in the repression of marginalized groups. This, historically, takes the form of violence, discrimination, ostracization, and cries for the state to intervene with yet more violence.

Posey is hardly charging down the street with tanks, or breaking windows, but we still see in her the tyranny of everyday people, and her actions should be hauntingly familiar to anyone paying attention to the state of America today.

Posey is a Karen.

She routinely insists upon appealing to societal authorities to enforce her personal prejudices. The most horrific example of this is when Posey flat out goes to the police station, demands to fill out a report, and attempts to bully Hitch into blaming the entire unicorn race on her misfortunes.

In real life, this kind of behavior has lead to wrongful imprisonment, police harassment of minority groups, and even lynchings. To list both the historical and recent examples of this modus operandi would require me to exceed the character limit of this platform, but suffice it to say that it has happened thousands of times over, and continues to happen right now. Posey's actions mirror our current reality in the most horrific way possible.

In the end, of course, everypony forgives everypony else. Bitterness resolved. Magic restored and stabilized. Even new forms of magic are discovered!

But I think the figure of Posey bears serious discussion nevertheless, as an example of everyday tyranny that doesn't go away the second that the Emperor Sprouts of the world are deposed.

MLP deserves praise for daring to go there.

Doctor Whooves and Derpy

I was walking through Ponyville with a smile on my face. Today and the next few days were my day off since my schedule was pretty busy back then:

Drop Cozy Glow off at school

Work at Sugarcube Bakery

Flying lessons with Fluttershy (when she's not busy)

Magic lessons at night with Princess Luna.

This schedule would usually leave me with only a few hours of sleep in the end. So, I asked the Cakes for a day off, and asked Fluttershy and Princess Luna for a break from my lessons. They all said "yes" and now my schedule's free enough for me to relax and take Cozy Glow to school.

I let out a peaceful sigh. "Ahh, so peaceful. I should take day offs from more often," I said.

Walking right next to me was Heartbreak, who looked a little frustrated.

"You didn't have to drag me along on your walk, Lemon," she grumbled.

"You need to get out and enjoy the fresh air, HB. You've been inside the house every day," I said.

Heartbreak only grumbled in response, making me smile even more. We then passed by a familiar, blue-colored police box.

I smiled. "Oh, look. It's the TARDIS," I said.

She looked at it too. "Huh. I guess this universe has its own Time Lord/Time Pony," said Heartbreak, impressed.

"Yeah," I said.

We walked a few more feet before stopping, realizing something.

"Was that...?" I asked.

She shook her head. "It can't be," said Heartbreak.

We walked back to see if we weren't seeing things. It really was a Police Box. That meant only one thing.

"This universe actually has its own Time Pony Doctor Whooves too," I said. "What are the odds?"

I then heard two familiar voices nearby. I looked and saw that it belonged to Doctor Whooves and Derpy. They were heading for the TARDIS while conversing with one another.

I grinned. "I have an idea," I said.

"What?" she asked.

Before Heartbreak could ask any more, my horn then glowed with magic. My magic covered the both of us for a few seconds. After that, we both instantly became see-through.

She looked at herself. "How...? You learned it from Princess Luna, didn't you?" asked Heartbreak.

I nodded. We watched as Doctor Whooves and Derpy arrived at the TARDIS.

"Where should we head for next, Doctor?" she asked, curious.

He thought about it. "I guess whichever universe is next that seems interesting," informed Doctor Whooves.

"Then, how about we travel to some universes that I know about?" I asked.

The two were surprised. Since they couldn't see us, to them my voice came out of nowhere. My horn glowed and I released the spell.

"Hello, Doctor, Derpy," I greeted.

"Hey, Lemon, HB. What are you two doing here?" asked Derpy.

"Well, we were in the neighborhood going on a walk, but then-" I pointed at the TARDIS with a hoof "-we saw this thing and knew that it was something special. Plus, we saw you two approaching it while talking about universe travel, and we wanted to join for an adventure," I explained.

Heartbreak looked back at me, surprised. "We? What 'we'?" she asked.

"Come on, HB. Haven't you ever wanted to visit other Equestrian universes?" I questioned.

She looked away. "Yeah, but, what if something goes wrong because of my curses?" asked Heartbreak.

"Nothing bad will happen to any of us. It'll be fine," I said. "How about this? We go on an adventure to a few universes, and then we head back home? Is that good with you?"

Heartbreak thought about it. "Fine, but only because it's obvious you'll get yourself into trouble," she said.

I scoffed. "Ha. Puh-lease," I said. I looked back at Doctor Whooves and Derpy. "So, can we join?"

The two looked at each other before looking back at us.

He smiled. "Well, the more the merrier I always say. Welcome aboard, you two," said Doctor Whooves.

She smiled. "You two are going to love traveling with the Doctor. It's pretty amazing," said Derpy.

Once the Doctor unlocked the door, we all stepped inside.

"You said you know some universes we could visit? Any suggestions?" he asked.

The door closed behind him.

My greatest apprehensions for the new My Little Pony movie & generation.

Today MLP Generation 5 has been made available on Netflix, and on Saturday I’ll be seeing it with my friends in the Milwaukee Bronies. I’ve had an uneasy feeling about it, and finally putting much of that into words was helpful. It was certainly interesting, and I’d like to share it with other people. I’ve done so with only a few, but I want to put this out there before anyone thinks my opinion is contaminated by either seeing the movie, or something getting spoiled. Tomorrow I may be relieved, let down, or just impressed that I managed to predict so much. Something I’ve definitely kept in mind is that with Generation 4’s premieres, finales, and own movie, the trailers were always cut unimpressively (IMHO). So I tended to be pleasantly surprised with pretty much everything I watch from G4, when I even bothered looking at the trailers. So I’ll be quite happy to be proven wrong this Saturday. Now…

They certainly didn’t intend to be flipping off everything Gen 4 established. No creator ever tries that when they’re brought into a franchise in the payroll of the IP owners. But for their society to regress to this point of segregation? The only thought process I can think of for this bizarre departure are A) The new show staff threw their hands up on matching anything with G4... or B) they came up with a totally fresh setting and timeline, and then some exec or analyst at Hasbro said “Heck no, you are GOING to connect this with our previous money-printing machine. Got it?” And that level of mandated storytelling doesn’t fill me with confidence.

I’ve heard at least one comparison to the Sequel Trilogy, which I expected. True, there’s some notable superficial similarities. It’s decades(?) later, the original heroes are spoken of as myths, for various reasons the world is in trouble, and our protagonist is a disciple-slash-fangirl of what the previous heroes fought for. But this is way more drastic and bizarre of a development.

The conflict in the Sequel Trilogy for the galaxy at large is that the Empire has returned, but rebranded. A new set of new jerks wanted power, teamed up with some of the old jerks, got a bunch of big guns, and held the galaxy hostage. That’s something that just happens in repeated strokes of history. It’s the re-drawing of a bunch of borders. The only moral failing there is being lax with fascists.

Having the Sequel Trilogy retread a plot also isn’t as weird as the My Little Pony franchise. The Force Awakens was made decades after the OT concluded, and the previous Prequel Trilogy took a really different direction and wasn’t received well. Then the franchise got completely new owners. So going back to its roots to start things out was a logical move. It’s only been THREE YEARS between these different shows of MLP, so the repetition doesn’t have much charm. Although repetition may not be the right word, since the setup for this show’s racial dilemma is way more extreme.

Equestria for some reason has gone through a jaw-dropping morale decay. Not only have they embraced division they were fighting against in seasons 8 & 9, they’ve regressed to the level of segregation before Equestria was FOUNDED. The Star Wars equivalent of that would be not only everyone fighting the First Order, they also suddenly don’t allow Wookies and other aliens to drink from the water fountains. Like, how the heck did that turn into a problem?

If the only progress undone from Gen 4 were the relationships with the non-ponies introduced later, that would actually make more sense. Social equality has reactionary backlash, which often occurs immediately after landmark victories. Ponies were the ones that held the most power on the world stage (some kinds more than others in Equestria).

But the WAY bigger issue isn’t internal logic and retcons. I learned long ago to set aside any expectation of a reward or pandering for my years-long commitment to a toy franchise. It’s the potential mishandling of the topic of racism, and I worry we’ve already on shaky ground. The morale of “segregation is bad” feels like bottom of the barrel, kind of copout way of tackling racism. At least, it does for settings that are extremely modern like Generation 5 clearly is. Segregation of people by ethnicity, by rule of law, has fully shifted to obsolesce in the cultural landscape of first world countries. Not even the most deranged lunatics in our government like Boebert or Greene advocate for it (not yet anyway). Stories about segregation can still be done really well of course, but it can’t just be about wiping it off the lawbooks and solving everything. It needs look at why people do this in the first place, who fights for it as the status quo, and what social structures and habits keep the thing in place despite the efforts of good people.

Of course, we still HAVE segregation in society. Not legally, but de facto thanks to economic status and civic planning. And not just physical separation, but grotesque imbalances of power and means. Look at job opportunities, home ownership, insurance evaluations, scrutiny by police, investment in local schools, etc. In G4 it was pretty clear that WAY more unicorns got to live in the lap of luxury or centers of commerce and education. Earth ponies were more spread out, rural, and based on an agrarian existence to feed the country. It’s not that G4 did much with it, but that kind of setup is way closer to modern day inequality, and would be a more fertile bed for those kind of stories. Admittedly, the Pegasi city in the trailer looked absolutely LOADED, so maybe we do have that element in store.

What the trailers and press releases are saying feels weak even as just a segregation story. The ponies separating makes segregation look like a bunch of people moving out like feuding roommates… instead of being put in place by a group of people with WAY more power and money than everyone else. Segregation is portrayed as a mutual agreement, not exploitation. My worry is that they’re going to go to Pocahontas routes, and make the root of racism a select few rich figureheads spreading lies. And undoubtedly, rich people in the private and public sector DO profit off of ignorance and violence, and divert attention from real problems. But when white people in America were treating everyone as subhuman, it wasn’t FEAR that was driving it (at least, not exclusively). For one, it was profit and sheer convenience. Manual labor and the least desirable tasks could be foisted on to ‘lesser’ peoples, and they wouldn’t even require a humane wage. Even if there hadn’t been those empirical benefits, discrimination also brought the sadistic sense of self-importance that comes from standing on someone else’s neck. The imaginary structures of racism let people feel comfortable about their place in the universe.

I wouldn’t call Zecora’s introductory episode all that nuanced, but it was definitely more accurate to real life than the (hopefully hypothetical) scenario I described above. In Bridle Gossip, it’s extremely apparent that the Pony majority of Ponyville are the ones acting like tools, and singling out Zecora for being different. They are the ones obligated to apologize to HER. (Even though it’s of course awkward that they wrote Zecora as a rhyming witch doctor, when she’s meant to represent an African person. It might not be so bad if she wasn’t the ONLY Zebra, and the only creature coded that way.)

Companies and studios will gladly tell their audiences to sympathize with victimized individuals and populations of oppression, and hate the individual acts done upon them. But then they’ll get cagey about making some members of the audience feel any kind of guilt, from distantly benefitting from that system; or maybe even subtlety being part of one. It’s not good for the bottom line to name a civilian population for taking any racist, oppressive or outright murderous actions. No, it’s a single evil dictator (or CEO, or general) and their gaggle of cronies, who just needs to be overthrown. We see this toothless crud play out over and over because corporate entities are either A) that naive, or B) scared of some losers with megaphones losing their minds over the suggestion of self-examination. Some people are SO fragile at the idea of self-examination, or guilt. Because it goes back to having an identity, an innocent and sympathetic self-image.
