As Algy gazed into the pond, watching for signs of activity, and wondering when he would first see the tiny tails of tadpoles beneath the tapestry of pond plants that the frogs and toads loved, the stone garden Buddha behind him gazed also, with a fixed, beatific smile on his face.
Wrapped in a coat of green moss and algae, the Buddha sat there peacefully immovable through battering wind and rain, ice, snow and frost, and even summer sunshine, blissfully content, watching quietly over the pond, and as Algy kept him company he too relaxed, and smiled a happy fluffy bird smile, recalling a poem about just such a garden Buddha:
Gift of a friend, the stone Buddha sits zazen, prayer beads clutched in his chubby fingers. Through snow, icy rain, the riot of spring flowers, he gazes forward to the city in the distance—always the same bountiful smile upon his portly face. Why don’t I share his one-minded happiness? The pear blossom, the crimson-petaled magnolia, filling me instead with a mixture of nostalgia and yearning. He’s laughing at me, isn’t he? The seasons wheeling despite my photographs and notes, my desire to make them pause. Is that the lesson? That stasis, this holding on, is not life? Now I’m smiling, too—the late cherry, its soft pink blossoms already beginning to scatter; the trillium, its three-petaled white flowers exquisitely tinged with purple as they fall.
[Algy is thinking of the poem The Garden Buddha by the contemporary Portugese-American poet Peter Pereira.]

This is Vasilisa the Beautiful. A Russian fairytale, from a beautifully animated film I grew up watching and hold dear to my heart.
I love the art style so much, I tried to incorporate it into my piece here, while still adding my personal style and flairs to it!
I really loved mimicking this style with all the shapes and details. It was really relaxing just throwing in whatever I felt like. I also LOVE drawing water like this!!! Just squished ovals all over hehe.
I drew this with the intension of using it as an embroidery guide... so hopefully I'll do that!
Also, upon looking for my first fanart I did, I found that I did it exactly 10 years ago! It's nice to see my progress as an artist <3

If you want to watch the Soviet film it's here on youtube! There's probably English subtitles, but I just listen to it as it is and enjoy the visual storytelling.

The Sunday man on the radio is not the usual man on the radio. How will we know ourselves? So far Cat Stevens is chasing moon shadows, Frank Sinatra has some advice on love and marriage and Bing Crosby and Louis Armstrong have gone fishing. Weatherwise there's damp, followed by more damp, aaaand 'blink' that was the sunshine.
Today's groaner: I went running with my Bible ... Now my Psalms are all sweaty ;-D badoom tish ... here all week!!
The plants that were standing so proudly all round the water butt succumbed to the current heavy rain and winds and are all now taking a swim. The snails are delighted ... makes a tasty chompy change from the usual dead debris dinners.
One day I'll get up, go look at the water butt and there'll be a whole host of mini snail boats tacking back and forth ... a restaurant will have sprung up ... and there'll be tiny little billboards advertising the butt as 'the' go to place for all gastropods. (Shakes head and smiles) ... thankfully they're not as crazy as us hoomans ... (tilts head) ... but you never know.
Time for more coffee and the usual this, that and the other. Then later, as there's nothing on the TV but sport (which I hate), I'll be digging through my DVDs. It'll be as much a surprise to me as anyone else what I end up watching ...

[Video description: me showing off my Sagittaria latifolia AKA broadleaf arrowhead or wapato or duck potato; growing in the pond in my parents' garden]
Ponds can be kitchen gardens too- there's a not insignificant number of edible aquatics that are worth growing. I chose to try and cultivate this one because it was mentioned in Eric Tosenmier's Edible Perennials book.
Be very careful with aquatic plants that are not native to your area. They can cause a huge amount of damage to the wider ecosystem if they escape.

Yet another storm to the south of Britain had brought heavy rain all night, and in the morning Algy discovered that the world was exceedingly wet again. But of course that was not the slightest bit unusual in the wild west Highlands of Scotland, and despite the excessive humidity, he was glad to find that the day was pleasantly calm.
Hopping over to the smaller of the two ponds in his assistants' garden, Algy settled down on a mossy stone at the water's edge, to see what might be happening there. The plants around the pond told a rambling tale of a winter of stormy weather, in a cacophany of battered red and green vegetation tangling here and there and every which way, but the pond itself looked vibrant and healthy, and Algy suspected that although it might perhaps not win human awards for the smartest garden, the many wee creatures which relied upon this seemingly chaotic environment were probably content.
It was certainly peaceful and soothing to perch by the side of the water and try to gaze into its depths, even though he could detect no obvious activity, and Algy wondered idly what the pond was doing:
Wobbling like a wobbly jelly Being a bucket for the rain Sending flash-backs to the sun Cheeking the sky Giving the moon a bath Letting swans, ducks and winter leaves ride on its back Licking the lollipop reeds Pretending to be soup for the wind to stir Growing stinky skunk cabbages Drawing wheels and circles then rubbing them out Plopping slopping slurping spinning Turning the weeping willows happily upside down Dreaming of running away to sea Hiding under a starry blanket of dark What is the pond doing? Ponding. Responding.
[Algy is thinking of the poem What is the Pond Doing? by the contemporary English poet and children's author Diana Hendry.]

Nymphaea Caerulea - Egyptian Blue Lotus
38 days old - kept with fish and snails.
I thought I’d post a video showing how my fish coexist with this plant - almost like how the ancient egyptians used to farm it with tilapia

Duckweed
Lemna minor is the common duckweed that infests the drainage pond. It is SO extremely prolific that I doubt that a huge herd of koi could eat it all. It appeared within the pond about as soon as the pond started to fill with water. It was undoubtedly brought by the first ducks to arrive while the pond was no bigger than a large puddle. It was no surprise, since duckweed inhabits most ponds.…

The man on the radio is not the usual man on the radio. Today's man on the radio is the man who likes pushing random buttons ... whilst the usual man on the radio is at Bord Bia Bloom festival to look at and talk about all things gardening. The traffic lady came and went twice, both times out of earshot ... I assume she talked of all things traffic.
Today's weather is dismal ... this hooman is startled at being upright .... need to keep the coffee coming. Captain Blackbeard is headed for the vet today for his usual injections to add a little pep to his step. 12 years old and still plays like a kitten.
Today's groaner: why did Adele cross the road? To say hello from the other side. Badoom tish ... here all week!
Reflections on the water ... the view from the cat bridge ... the littlest of oceans, the largest of drinking bowls ... Signor Floyd always preferred his morning aperitif from here ... I wonder if the watery wildlife will miss his dipping into their world ...
