"CANADA IS 'HOME' ΤΟ 135 IMMIGRANTS," Toronto Star. June 24, 1943. Page 3. ---- Canada became the official home of 135 foreign-born residents this week when they took the oath of allegiance to His Majesty the King. William Stangret, Parkham Ave., native of Poland, has lived here 16 years. He took the oath proudly.

Private W. Strand, who has lived here 18 years, served with the Canadian Army before transferring to the Norwegian forces. A native of Norway, he went to school here. He wears a long service medal.
Tom Dorosh, native of Russia. came to Toronto 16 years ago. His father, brothers and sisters are fighting with the Russian forces. "I am happy to be a real Canadian if not exactly a new one," he said.

to me, shawn has spanish lineage (I’m thinking hispanic--specifically from spain). calling dave “amigo”, translating ‘the little apple of death’ from spanish and saying it in spanish first
idc if amigo is a casual term everyone uses or that maybe shawn was so knowledgeable that he used the spanish name of the fruit first. it just makes sense that he has hispanic ancestry that he doesn’t utilize a whole lot, only here and there, bc it hasn’t been expressed in his familial environment often. but like he can speak spanish mostly fluently, though his accent isn't noticeable
idk I also picture him as the kind of guy who knows a lot of languages bc who knows where the safest apocalypse bunker could be located?
#i have a couple of shawn family hcs up my sleeve#like how his father is spanish-canadian and his mum is polish-canadian so shawn is mixed#noahtally-famous#total drama#kit stuff#td shawn#total drama pahkitew island#tdpi

I realised I had a little more to say in the context of the First Nations and indigenous rights and how much a single election can cause harm. Because people often think in terms of individual politician figure heads. They're the ones talking and taking up news space and making people angry or whatever.
But behind the politicians are a plethora of public servants who are working hard every day mostly trying to work in a non-partisan way to serve the public and do the best they can. And they can only get on with those efforts and that work if they are allowed to do so. And the difference between having politicians in charge who are largely indifferent vs actively hostile to that work is probably even bigger than that between politicians who are indifferent and supportive of it.
So... Yeah. Just food for thought.
#politics#and no#this is not strictly us poli#this is just as relevant#to#canadian politics#and really anywhere#public servants do a loooot of things that are beyond flashy law making and political grandstanding#and they often can accomplish them on a comparitive shoestring#as long as their bosses bosses boss who is the politician many steps removed#isn't actively hostile to their work#supportive = better#clearly#but you know...#flashy policy isn't the bulk of the government's work and job a lot of it is in the trenches#this isn't organised thoughts this is word vomit onto my little blog#so don't treat it like a polished political essay#but ill stand by the heart of it for sure

On at least one occasion, Matt has woken up, wandered into the kitchen like the ghost of a Victorian child, flicked on the lights and had a minor crisis. He's picking everything up and squinting at it because he can't read anything. How many rips did he take off the bong he can't remember getting out last night? Then he finally wakes up enough to realize he's not brain-damaged or baked, it's just all in Ukrainian and Polish because Katya did the shopping last. And he can read it.
#katya and matt || the soil of our souls#matthew || my country is winter#katya || бо лишало на серці сліди#This post is brought to you by the fact I have Ukrainian loved ones#and I can't read half the fucking products in my kitchen rn#because a new polish store opened up nearby#canadian household these days is like#slavic groceries#french health and beauty and taiwanese bubble tea#japanese crockery muah love you muji#british condiments#indian and arabic spices#taiwanese stationary

OC Playlist Meme
going through my tagged... This is egregiously late (two months!!) but thanks again @arczism for the tag on this. I’m going to take a page from your book and pair some songs w WIPs:
All the credit to @grovedigging for this one, because it just fits so good for my gear head v and his beloved rattler (and how he feels about kerry in it :’) ) cake is just a fun band in general and i think really nicely reflects v’s own playful personality.
and now, for something completely different. half of my V playlist is tyler the creator. (is this too gauche for tumblr. if you’re one of those people that doesn’t listen to like weezer or whatever please dont listen to this its 2010s tyler this is going to blast your tits clean off.) I love writing fight scenes (though i guess this is a… getting run over scene?) and they all need a theme song that slaps, and fucks, in that order.
OKAY! One last one.
me kerry and v are all vying for the number one night city apologist spot. Maybe she killed all those people because their vibes were off. sorry if you died there sounds like a skill issue. My city’s so big it makes you feel on top of the world if you on it.
Sending out some tags, feel free to just share some songs, or pair them with WIPs or finished pieces or do it for a canon character instead of oc, whatever no pressure et cetera et cetera : @henbased @kharonion @merge-conflict @swearingcactus @pandorasaquariumm @edaworks @juststayquiete @grovedigging @ frakenstein’s monster thats currently inbetween bodies atm, and anybody else who’d like to do it, as honestly i love music and always like hearing new stuff
#i actually have both a v and a silverdyne playlist but i like making a lil graphic and post and all for it when i post#but btw arczism i really liked a bunch of your songs on yours#idk i cant remember if i said anything on that post but i really like a lot of polish rap#as far as foreign language rap goes my top three#is Portuguese polish and french (esp french Canadian). Russian can be p good too#cp 2077#stomping in a glass house

"STRIKE CHARGES ADJOURNED WEEK," Kitchener Record. May 10, 1934. Page 1. ---- Six Held For Obstruction, Two For Intimidation And Two Disorderly Conduct ---- Ten strikers and strike sympathizers, three of them women, charged with intimidation, obstruction or disorderly conduct had their cases adjourned in police court today for a week on request of Oney Brown, Toronto defence counsel. Crown Attorney Bowlby was advised by Mr. Brown that he would be unable to come up for the trial today and desired an adjournment. Harold Daufman who formerly appeared as defence counsel for the strikers withdrew from - the case last week when violence broke out.
Six are held on charges of obstruction, two for intimidation and two for disorderly conduct. Those held for intimidation are John Krzewsky and Nick Wonsowich; - obstruction, Tony Fortuna, Mary Uhryn, Josephine Gryzwama, Thomas Moskal, John Smigielski and Tony Kilbassa. William Baggey and Mrs. Jennie Duchuk are held for disorderly conduct.
They were all given renewal of bail by the magistrate on the understanding they are to remain away from the vicinity of the tannery until their cases are disposed of.
Josephine Gryzwama appeared in court for the first time. She was not arrested but was told to come to court today as there was an obstruction charge against her. She is alleged to have interfered with - he police during the disorders that occurred in front of the Kaufman Rubber factory.
Tony Kilbassa, held for obstruction, could not appear in court to- day. He is still at the hospital as a result of injuries he received when hit over the head by a dinner pail when he is alleged to have interfered with a strike-breaker. L. D. Leyes, J. P., went to the hospital. and renewed bail for the accused.

there's a river that runs through my late grandparents' town called the Sugar River, the name apparently being an Anglicization of its Abenaki name. My grandparents, who were Jews from Brooklyn, took to calling it the Meshuggah River because it was so fast and crazy. They thought this was HILARIOUS. I don't really have a point with all of this, it just popped into my head this afternoon.
#that river is just one of those things that i think of as having a certain inherent jewishness to it#even though it's ABSOLUTELY not#it's a river with a garbled abenaki name in a part of new hampshire where everyone is either french canadian or polish#but in my head it's filed right next to u-bet syrup and the marx brothers#there's a kernel of something either profound or deeply saccharine here but i don't have time to dig for it#so i'm just throwing it out there
