i think an interesting facet of nick's character (this is mostly in unmade man but i still think applies to his game characterisation) is his dogged obsession with doing the right thing in a way that extends beyond having a strong moral core. he woke up in the garbage, unaware of who, or what, he was. it's the defining event of his life. he's doing right because it's the right thing to do, sure, but through working his job for free, hauling ass as a handyman, willingly plugging wads of kellogg's brain into his with the kind of immediacy that reads as passively suicidal, he's also making himself indispensable. his sense of self and personhood is tied to the service he provides. he's officially too useful to be disregarded
