I used to listen to a podcast called "Was I in a Cult?" Which is what it says on the tin. Really interesting interviews with ex-cult members, albeit spliced with annoying/unfunny quips from the hosts here and there (not the end of the world, just bleh, to my tastes). They put a lot of effort into talking about what cults actually are, and how any normal person can get sucked into and trapped in a cult, and about recovering from these experiences, and what it's like to go through such-and-such an experience, and about all the really bad and exploitative shit that cult leaders pull. Anyway, I haven't listened to them more recently, so this may have changed - I do not know - but as of mid-2024, they were STILL sponsored by Better Help. A podcast that literally tries to be, in many ways, respectful of mental health and of victims, and in favor of making mental health care accessible (I think), but yet sponsoring the awful, exploitative business that is Better Help. Honestly, I suspect they maybe just... didn't know to be on the lookout for that kind of scam, or for that kind of medical privacy violation? Even though they are very aware of information pertaining to the kind of scams and violations that constitute cults. They're not tech people at all, I think. Still. Advertizing Better Help in 2024! Surely someone would have told them by that point? Surely??? /rant /complaint /done now

I don't understand why game devs even bother putting depth of field, motion blur, bloom, and other post-processing like that in their games when it almost ALWAYS looks fucking horrible. Like I get it with older games due to console limitations, they had to rely on having a good art style to carry the visuals, and sometimes having blur can add to it, or depth of field, etc, it mattered more because you couldn't turn it off so they had to make sure it looked good. Instead of now any moron with UE5 can just slap motion blur and bloom on their game and call it good (and if you don't like it just turn it off loll!!!, why is it even in the game then?)

if I'm playing a game I want visual clarity, I want to see everything, blur and depth of field just covers it up, bloom is blinding, chromatic aberration is just pointless, god rays and lens distortion are also horrible to look at too because even though it's supposed to be "cinematic" or whatever, it's just taking something that's an error in film-making and making it an intentional choice, and it looks like shit, lmao

edit: not only that a lot of post-processing like that can make your game run worse!!!!!!!!!!

Something I never got about Octavinelle x fem reader is the idea that the trio don't know what boobs are or just... anything about afab humans at all. It makes no sense.

They literally attended a boot camp before NRC (which I personally headcanon to last a year because there's a lot to learn) to learn about humans, beastmen and fae, and life on land? Huh?

The general argument for this is that there's no need to learn about it because NRC is an all boys school, which makes no sense at all because 1: that doesn't mean there can't be trans students, 2: the town on Sage Island most certainly does not only have amab inhabitants, and 3: Azul plans to expand his business on land and has said multiple times he does thorough research about land, which will include his potential customers- and something I've learned while taking Hospitality is that things like career and gender are taken into consideration when planning special meals or menus.

Idk, maybe I'm complaining too much, but I just don't like these kinds of fics because it always involves one or all of the trio grabbing reader's chest without her permission and squishing/pulling, which is sexual harassment and it makes me uncomfortable, especially since it's treated as a joke and any discomfort that reader may have is laughed off.

What I seriously do not understand about books being made into tv shows is why are there only 8 episodes?? Like there is so much content in 300+ page books and you’re going to cherry pick the storyline?? And don’t get me started on how LONG it takes now in between seasons to release. Gilmore Girls has 40 minute episodes and there are 22 in each season and that is WITHOUT having a book to base the storyline on. Make it make sense bruh.

look computational psychiatry is a concept with a certain amount of cursed energy trailing behind it, but I'm really getting my ass chapped about a fundamental flaw in large scale data analysis that I've been complaining about for years. Here's what's bugging me:

When you're trying to understand a system as complex as behavioral tendencies, you cannot substitute large amounts of "low quality" data (data correlating more weakly with a trait of interest, say, or data that only measures one of several potential interacting factors that combine to create outcomes) for "high quality" data that inquiries more deeply about the system.

The reason for that is this: when we're trying to analyze data as scientists, we leave things we're not directly interrogating as randomized as possible on the assumption that either there is no main effect of those things on our data, or that balancing and randomizing those things will drown out whatever those effects are.

But the problem is this: sometimes there are not only strong effects in the data you haven't considered, but also they correlate: either with one of the main effects you do know about, or simply with one another.

This means that there is structure in your data. And you can't see it, which means that you can't account for it. Which means whatever your findings are, they won't generalize the moment you switch to a new population structured differently. Worse, you are incredibly vulnerable to sampling bias because the moment your sample fails to reflect the structure of the population you're up shit creek without a paddle. Twin studies are notoriously prone to this because white and middle to upper class twins are vastly more likely to be identified and recruited for them, because those are the people who respond to study queries and are easy to get hold of. GWAS data, also extremely prone to this issue. Anything you train machine learning datasets like ChatGPT on, where you're compiling unbelievably big datasets to try to "train out" the noise.

These approaches presuppose that sampling depth is enough to "drown out" any other conflicting main effects or interactions. What it actually typically does is obscure the impact of meaningful causative agents (hidden behind conflicting correlation factors you can't control for) and overstate the value of whatever significant main effects do manage to survive and fall out, even if they explain a pitiably small proportion of the variation in the population.

It's a natural response to the wondrous power afforded by modern advances in computing, but it's not a great way to understand a complex natural world.
