So fun fact about me! When Pokémon hands me a ninja, I will love them unconditionally.

Most Beloved:

Number 1: Squirtle

My absolute favorite is squirtle. What's funny about this is I can't really pinpoint a specific reason why I like him so much. My first pokemon game was alpha sapphire, and I didn't play gen 1 until Let's Go Eevee, so it's not a nostalgia factor. I think my brain just subconsciously selected him back when I was watching the Indigo League anime in middle school. The squirtle squad showed up and my brain was like "Yeah. This guy. He's awesome. This is the one." And he has been my number 1 favorite fella ever since then, and as a consequence he is the pokemon I have the most merch of and it isn't really close.

Please keep in mind this is just what I have in my apartment where I live for college, and that I have even more stuff in my bedroom back at home. Now that I think about it, Koopa Troopa is my favorite mario character, so maybe I have an affinity for characters that are just little turtles. Either way, water is also my favorite type, which means even more bonus points for squirtle.

Number 2: Riolu

Riolu's high ranking has been somewhat of a recent development for me. I've always liked lucario, but I didn't see the light that was riolu until after I watched Pokemon Journeys. Ash's riolu was so silly and adorable, and I always felt so bubbly inside when he was on screen. This shift in my preference is probably due to me developing a major soft spot for cute characters/creatures over the past few years. Most of my favorite pokemon at this point are just little guys because of it. Anyways, the reason I like him so much is because of the aura control him and lucario are capable of. I've always loved aura as a power system; the idea of being able to harness one's own life energy and see it in others is just so cool to me. I especially like how it's established as its own concept outside of moves in pokemon, making it something super unique that only riolu's evolutionary line can take advantage of. I have a lot of lore/worldbuilding ideas for PMD that would utilize aura. For example, Milo, the protagonist of the PMD verse I've been brainstorming, on is a riolu with much stronger aura than normal due to him being a pokemon with a human soul. I have a lot of ideas for how I could use this concept to drive plot points or character arcs, and I might share more in the future if I ever get time to start solidifying a story.

By the way, Milo's partner, Lilly, is a squirtle. No way I don't give both of my two favorites the spotlight.

Number 3: Sprigatito

My love of sprigatito is really quite simple. I love cats. So much. They are easily my number one favorite animal of all time. My Instagram feed is covered in them. So imagine my excitement when I saw that one of the new generation 9 starters was a kitty. My violet team is my favorite team I've ever used in a pokemon game, and the sprigatito line is a massive part of why I love it so much. Sprigatito is adorable, and my meowscarada was so much fun to use after he evolved. On top of that, sprigatito's depiction in Pokemon Horizons makes me love it even more. It's literally just a cat. It loafs. It makes biscuits.. It gets annoyed at the mildest inconvenience. Liko squishes its beans. Plus it releases a super sweet scent when you cuddle it as a bonus. It's so perfect. It's like Game Freak was like "Yeah this is the perfect pokemon for Ray, put it in the game." I have a sprigatito character in my PMD verse named Mayple, but I can't share much about her because it would mean dropping pretty big spoilers for a plot point I have planned.

Honorable Mentions: Greninja and Ceruledge

I love ninjas. I love frogs. Greninja is both. And ceruledge is just objectively one of the coolest pokemon designs ever.

In terms of behated pokemon, I don't have many that I personally despise. It's more so that I feel indifferent about them, and I would simply prefer not to use them on my teams. Usually I don't have any real reason to dislike the ones I do hate; I think it just stems from a gut feeling. The biggest one off the top of my head is the tepig line. I don't know what it is, something just feels off about them. I also dislike incineroar. I like litten and torracat a lot, but they really dropped the ball with the final evolution for me.

That's about all I have. This was really fun to do! Thank you so much for submitting this ask. I look up to you and your work a lot, and it made my night when I got the notification. I'm still pretty new to Tumblr, so I don't know exactly how I'm supposed to do things around here. I want to try to meet more people here, but my social anxiety and tendency to overthink online interactions usually shuts down anything before it can happen. I find it funny how I've seen a lot of people on here with like a small group of interests like pheonix wright and mad rat dead or monster hunter and puyo puyo, whereas I am interested in and have played all of them. Trust me, the list does not stop there

My Top Ten Favorite Pokemon and Why

Gonna include a gif of each, so I'll put it under a Keep Reading to contain it~ <3

Snorlax - Because they're a beloved Pokemon despite being fat and lazy and I relate to them a lot.

2. Glaceon - I think they're the cutest Eeveelution. Side note: I always name at least one of my female Glaceon Yuugi. I don't know why. It's just something I've done across multiple games.

3. Vulpix - Kantonian or Alolan, I love the curly-haired fox because they made curls look cool. I have a love-hate relationship with my own curly hair, especially after puberty decided to fuck them up for me lmao

4. Dragonair - Elegant long draco-snake. I always liked the spheres on their body, too.

5. Tepig - I love the lil pig~! They've got a great color scheme, both normal and Shiny, their curly tail has a ball on the tip, and they're just so damn cute~! >w<

6. Mewtwo - Badass. Pokemon movie. Dan Green. Need I say more?

7. Entei - Same reason as Mewtwo, tbh LOL

8. Greninja - Cool ninja frog. Helps that Y was my first official Pokemon game. Named my first one Sasuke :P

9. Wooloo - I wasn't immune to the cute sheep propaganda. Adorable cotton ball~!

10. Gardevoir - Amazing Shiny, very strong, very elegant.

I love a lot of Pokemon, so it's hard to just settle on 10. It'd probably be easier to make a list of Pokemon I don't care for lol

Advent Calendar - Day 3 - Koga

Friday late art. Unfortunately, yesterday around 6 p.m. I went to sleep "for a while". As a result, I fell asleep and woke up in the early morning... So I don't colour it anymore. Not now. So here is Fuchsia City Gym Leader, The Poisonous Ninja Master Koga from the Pokemon series, drawn for Day 3. And his beloved Golbat. I love this guy in every version, even in the anime (which messed up about most of the leaders), though undoubtedly my favourite version is the one from the Pokemon Special manga. He looks a bit like a raven there - and that's what I was basing on when drawing this picture. Also shurikenball is here :3 By the way - my favourite manga scene? When he uses his own blood to fight the Elite Agata to defeat her Arbok. A true ninja-style dedication - it's honey to my heart. (Yes, the manga Pokemon Special, also known as Pokemon Adventures, is a much more serious work than the anime and can be very dark at times. The first appearance of this leader left WTF on my face, 'cause Pokemon's death was shown there... A wonderful thing, I recommend reading to all Pokemon fans!) Let's add that he is also the only leader in the first generation that really gave me a problem - especially since I slapped him after a fight with a rather banal defeat of Erika, and in the old Reds there weren't such cool types as the dark and too many psychic moves... Anyway. Ninja. He has a higher form of my beloved Zubat (in the manga, in games, unfortunately, only in the 2nd generation he gets Crobat). He is honorable. Initially a villain, then he rehabilitates himself (in the manga). I just love this guy. Maybe one day I'll finish this picture :3 You don’t know what going on? FF VII characters as Pokemon Part 1

So, today in one of my "what if..." moments, I imagined the Final Fantasy VII characters if they were pokemon (because, both fandoms are awesome! Yay!) so here's what I got:

Cloud as Lucario:

I think Lucario suits Cloud pretty well! Lucario seems to have a stoic, brave and heroic demeanor, yet at the same time, looks kind and soft, just like Cloud really is. Also, Cloud is a awesome figther, and Lucario is a fighting type mixed with steel type (steel=cloud's giant sword) also, Lucario kinda looks like a wolf which is Cloud's representative animal. Oh, Lucario's legs look like Cloud's baggy pants,too.

Tifa as Blaziken:

Obviously, Tifa had to be a figthing type more than anyone else! Blaziken is agile, and super strong, just like our beloved Tifa. Also, Blaziken's... Hair? Is as long as Tifa's. Of course, both are super strong physically, yet still manage to look graceful!

Aerith as Shaymin:

Aerith HAD to be a mythical pokemon. She is a Cetra, which are kinda like special humans with powers over the planet. Mythical pokemon are special pokemon from legends, soooooo... There you go! She loves flowers, and Shaimyn happens to have pink flowers on it's head! (pink, as her overall color scheme) and also! Look at shaimyn's eyes! They are green just like Aerith's!

Barret as Magmortar:

Just. Look. At. It.!! It has a cannon-like arm! Who does have a gun instead of an arm? Barret!!! Magmortar is a huge marshmallow looking thingy, so does Barret! I dont know why, but Magmortar gives me the: "touch my children and i'll kill you" vibes.

Red XIII as Pyroar

Red is a cute dog/lion/lab ratdog thingy!! :3 so it was either Pyroar or Arcanine! But Pyroar won this one! Pyroar looks prideful just like Red, and kinda mysterious too. And both are super cute!! (Yes, red xiii is my imaginary pet, fight me)

Zack as Arcanine:

Now, speaking of Arcanine... Look at him! It looks playful and confident just like Zack! In case you havent played ffcrisis core, everyone called Zack "puppy". I think Arcanine captures Zack's overall essence!

Yuffie as Greninja:

Not much to say here! Everyone's favorite Ninja Girl would be greninja!. Because... Both are ninjas and throw shurikens? Okay, moving on!

Vincent as Darkrai:

His popplio, after a lot of hard work and battling together, had evolved into a brionne! She was just as cute as she had been before, but now with more power than ever. Keith’s pokemon didn’t stand a chance.

“I’ll get you fore sure this time!” Lance was declaring, sending out his beloved Odette into the field.

“Let’s try out my newest pokemon,” Keith said almost to himself, pulling out a pokeball. “Let’s go, charmander!”

Lance was thinking to himself that a tiny little charmander would be no match for his newly evolved Odette. They’d never know if it was or not though, because the second that little lizard popped out of its pokeball Lance’s jaw dropped, thoroughly distracted from the pokemon battle.

Because there on the field like it was perfectly normal, sparkled a bright golden charmander. Not its normal orange, but an unmistakable glimmering gold.

Keith locked eyes with his charmander, who now seemed confused that they weren’t starting the battle yet. “Oh right,” he said dumbly. “When a pokemon has a mutation and turns up a weird color, right? I didn’t even notice.”

“How could you not notice!” Lance flailed. “He’d bright stupid gold!”

“I just thought he looked a little pale,” Keith shrugged. “Figured he needed more sunlight.”

“You know the odds of finding a shiny are like, one in four THOUSAND, right? And you didn’t even notice when you caught him?!”

“I only caught him because he wandered into my camp snooping around for food,” Keith said. “I’m not really the type to collect pokemon willy-nilly. He just seemed kind of helpless, so I figured I’d bring him along.”

Lance buried his face in his hands. “I don’t even wanna fight you anymore,” He said flatly.

He did, however, REALLY wanna catch his own shiny. Something even cooler than Keith’s, like a gyarados.

So. I like Pokemon. And I like D&D. Thing is, those two things don’t mix very well. I know there’s a few fan-made systems by I’ve tried them and they are a dumpsterfire to work with. So. I would like to introduce you to a new endeavor on this blog. I’m going to see what I can do to make a version of beloved Pokemon characters using all available material, both official books and UA articles, for Dungeons and Dragons 5e. Let’s start with my version of Homika, or rather Roxie from Black 2 and White 2.

Ability Scores

These ventures will use standard array, a set of numbers given as a sort of average stat pool. Feel free to roll for stats if you wanted to use this character, just treat this arrangement as a general order for what stats are most important. Just keep multiclass minimums in mind, since she’s gonna need it.

Strength: 8 (Not needed) Dexterity: 15 (Most important) Constitution: 12 (Wish I could put more, but others are needed more) Intelligence: 10 (Not really important, didn’t want it lower than Strength) Wisdom: 13 (Will get higher later, needed for multiclassing)  Charisma: 14 (Also useful, needed for multiclassing)

Race

Homika is a Human. I could have gone Lightfoot Halfling, playing up her short stature and giving her some extra luck and bonuses to Dexterity and Charisma, but there are other ways to give her those sorts of things. Variant Humans also get some snazzy bonuses. Put the two free points Variant Humans get into Dexterity and Wisdom to round those odd numbers up to evens. She also gets a base speed of 30 ft, a skill proficiency, and a free Feat. Let’s take Animal Handling, since she’s pretty good with the Pokemon around Virbank. And as for her Feat, she has those rollerblades in her boots, so how about Mobile?

Mobile: Your speed increases by 10 feet. When you use the Dash action, difficult terrain doesn't cost you extra movement on that turn. When you make a melee attack against a creature, you don't provoke opportunity attacks from that creature for the rest of the turn, whether you hit or not.

Class and Background

I know what you’re thinking. She plays the bass, she’s in a band. So she’s gotta be a Bard, right? Wrong! The one direction I took differently with my interpretation here is her ties to Koga and Janine’s (or rather Kyou and Anzu’s) family. Homika was trained as a ninja since an early age, so she starts with a different class. I considered Rogue, but the best way to make her really good with a pair of daggers is in fact... Monk.

Monks start with a d8 hit die (which isn’t terrible), proficiency in Strength and Dexterity saving throws, simple weapons, shortswords, and two skills from a short list. She’ll take Acrobatics and Stealth here, other things she needs she can get from other sources. She also gets proficiency with an instrument or an artisan tool, so here let’s take her lute. No bass guitars, so I figured this was the next best thing. 

As for her background, let’s reflect that early ninja training and give her proficiency in Perception, since she’d be pretty observant, and Persuasion, since she’s a little rascal who can get people to do what she wants. Since backgrounds can also give you tool proficiency, let’s take the poisoner’s kit to allude to her connection to Poison Type Pokemon. 

Since I don’t want this post to be massive, let’s summarize her leveling. Her first five levels will all go into Monk, giving her a number of features that let her become devastatingly brutal in combat even without a weapon. Martial Arts lets her punches and kicks do damage as well as improve the damage die of her daggers over time, Unarmored Defense and Unarmored Movement help her avoid attacks and move quickly respectively, and her Ki lets her do a whole heap of rad ninja things. Her character sheet, link below, will go into greater detail. She can also Deflect Missiles after hitting level three, where she also gets a chance to pick a Monastic Tradition. 

Know how I said I wasn’t going Bard? Well that’s kind of a lie. Since we’re injecting some Bard into this Monk with the Drunken Master tradition. She gets free proficiency in Performance and the ability to brew her own booze with the Brewer’s Supplies. I’d say any disciplined rock star can still fight at her best while sloshed to hell and back. She also gets an Ability Score Improvement at level four, which we’ll put the +2 into Dexterity, and Slow Fall, which lets her reduce falling damage. At level five, it’s Extra Attack and Stunning Strike. The former is obvious, it lets her slash with each dagger in her hands. The latter is also obvious, giving her hits a little more bite so she can stagger her foes more easily. 

So she’s got some training. How bout we start her music career? And for that, we’re going to go into Bard. Yes, I lied about that too. Multiclassing into Bard gives her light armor if she wanted it, but more importantly it gives her another skill proficiency, which we’ll take Athletics to help with her low Strength. With her first bard level she gets Bardic Inspiration, which she can give to her allies to bolster their rolls, as well as the ability to cast a few spells through the power of MUSIC. She starts with two cantrips and four first level spells from those in with bard list. First, the cantrips:

Minor Illusion: Gives her some weird ninja tricks. Vicious Mockery: Lets her weaponize her snark to deal psychic damage and make her enemies just a little bit less likely to smack her or her friends.

And the spells:

Thunderwave: Line your foes up and blast ‘em with the power of Rock. Even though your specialty is Poison. Animal Friendship: Will help you start to gather up some bestial allies. Charm Person: For when your persuasion ain’t enough, use magic. Hideous Laughter: Helps you stall your enemies, underestimatin’ you.

Now let’s take three more levels of Bard, bringing our girl up to Monk 5/Bard 4. These levels give her Song of Rest, a way to give her and her allies some extra healing during short rests, and Jack of All Trades, giving her a half-proficiency bonus to every ability check she isn’t proficient in, like Arcana or even Initiative rolls. It’s pretty good and one of the best parts of going Bard. She also gets some schooling at Bard 3, and let’s expand her view of the world with the College of Lore. Lore gives her a new way to abuse her Bardic Inspiration, using Cutting Words to weaken her foe’s dice rolls. The college also gives her three more skill proficiencies, which we’ll take in Medicine, Nature, and Survival to reflect her knowledge of poisons. It also compliments her Animal Handling, making her quite handy in the wilds. Speaking of which, this level also gives her Expertise, letting her double the proficiency bonuses for two of her skills- let’s make those Performance for obvious reasons and Nature for buffing her knowledge of plant-based poisons. Since there’s just so many Grass/Poison Types, right? These Bard level also give her three more spells and second level spell slots, so she can learn second level spells. Let’s take advantage of that.

See Invisibility: Synchronizes well with your ninja abilities, so she would be able to see what others can’t.  Locate Animals and Plants: Helps you find some creatures to use those nature-based skills on. Speak with Animals: Wouldn’t it be nice to talk with Pokemon? This was she can. Assuming they’re beast-like, I guess. Also meshes witht he other animal-based spells you got.

Oh, and Bard 4 gives her another Ability Score Improvement. Max that Dexterity at 20, and, speaking of Dexterity, I want better daggers, let’s go back to Monk for five more levels. 

These five levels will buff the damage die on her daggers, give her some movement options and the ability to redirect attacks with Tipsy Sway, as well as make her fists magical so she can punch all those nasty Steel Types that she mighta broken her hand on before. Level seven gives her Evasion, making it easier to avoid damage from those Dexterity save spells- which you also have a dang good save for anyway- as well as Stillness of Mind. Here’s the easy way to stave off the fear effects that Halflings would have had bonuses toward, but this also includes charm too. Level eight nets another Ability Score Increase, let’s dump that +2 in Wisdom to get a better Armor Class. 

And Monk 10 gives us the whole dang reason I went so deep into Monk- Purity of Body grants immunity to disease and poison, which includes both the poisoned condition and the poison damage type. Why is this crucial? Because it’s the skill Homika had to develop to be so close with her Poison Types like, Dogars, the ones constantly radiating toxic gas or sludge. Now at character level 14, let’s swing back to Bard for four more levels.

Bard 5 makes her Bardic Inspiration dice fresh on short rests, so she can play more concerts. Bard 6 gives her Countercharm, a way to give her allies a taste of being super awesome so they gain advantage on saves against being frightened or charmed. And because of our college, she gets a core Bard ability early, Early Magical Secrets. It lets her select two spells from any list, so let’s actually get some Pokemon on this Pokemon Trainer. With access to third level spells from Bard 5 onward and fourth level spells at Bard 7, she’s got some options. First, her Magical Secrets:

Fly: How could she not get her trusty Crobat to fly her places? Pass without Trace: A handy ability to make other people nearly as sneaky as her, and it could be flavored as a sort of arcane smokescreen, which ties in well with her Dogars. 

And for the other spells from her Bard levels:

Earth Tremor: A solid representation of her Scolipede’s Bulldoze move. Hold Person: It takes some flavor, but this could be a bunch of grasses and vines tying down a foe, a good example of Ruffresia’s Grass Knot.  Stinking Cloud: Took some time, but we have poison damage now with this stink cloud, which could be a great Sludge Bomb or Sludge Wave sorta thing, representing Dogars really well. Phantasmal Killer: And finally, a spell added to the Bard’s list from a recentish Class Feature Variant UA. This creates a nightmarish creature that spooks the heck outa your foes to murderify things. Sounds like a good Gangar substitute to me! And lines up with your other abilities pretty well.

Bard 8 also gives her another Ability Score Improvement, let’s dump that +2 into Charisma so she isn’t such a terrible Bard. 

And finally, two more levels in Monk to buff her Martial Arts one step further and give her a final Ability Score Improvement at Monk 12, so dump that in Wisdom to finally have a pretty dang respectable AC of 19. 

Final Thoughts

Monk 12/Bard 8 is a pretty solid combination. She doesn’t lose out on any ASIs, she has great damage with a capped Dexterity, varied ways of dealing damage with Bard spells, and spectacular team play with Bardic Inspiration. Not to mention fantastic utility with all her skills. 

Unfortunately, that usefulness came at a cost. Her hit points, taking the average, are well under 100 and fully capable of getting squooshed easily. Not to mention that neither her Wisdom nor her Charisma are capped, which weakens both her Ki saves and her Spell saves respectively. Having to focus on two mental stats makes her a little bit less effective at both of them. That said, this build works best as a sort of ambush tactic. Cast one of your ranged spells to lock down a foe, move in close to stabby-stab, and then duck out so you don’t get hit. Your movement speed is freakin’ 60, make use of that.

My Favorite Fandoms and Why

I’m a huge nerd. Hopefully that’s clear for anyone who follows my blog or posts. So naturally I like a lot of fandoms, but there are a number that I really really like and some I’ve followed since childhood. 

Pokemon

A fandom I’ve followed since childhood. I was part of the original Pokemon generation who were kids when the first games (red, blue and yellow) came out. I love how even in the beginning there was no end of things to do in Pokemon. Bored with your team? There’s 151 of them and more on the way. Then you could battle and min-max your team to your heart’s content, and way back in the day you could even gamble in Pokemon games. I love the art style of Pokemon and the beloved creatures that are way too easy to get attached to. It’s like to the point where when someone (I’m not naming names) KOs your favorite Pokemon and then it’s time for some serious payback. We’re talking Hyper Beam on a 10% health Pokemon payback. Modern games have given us even more to do in games. If battling isn’t your thing, you can breed them for cool moves and other things (and potentially become a twisted Pokemon eugenicist). You can hunt for oddly colored Pokemon (shinies), something I never had the patience for. You can participate in Pokemon contests, and bond with your team by feeding or petting them. Pokemon designs are really diverse too, from ‘normal’ animals to plants to the gods themselves. Gods that can be caught and battled by ten year olds for some reason. Also it needs saying that for some reason teenage boys (and perhaps girls too) detest Pokemon because it’s not cool. What’s cool for teenage boys? Skateboards and saying ‘radical’ all the time? Ninja Turtles reference by the way. I was definitely in the minority liking Pokemon in my teenage years, but when I got to college, suddenly it was cool again and everyone was allowed to like it just like when I was a kid. Pretty awesome right? I’m really hyped for Sword and Shield, just like I’ve been hyped for every new main series game. 

Star Wars

Another fandom I’ve followed since childhood. While Pokemon took us to a land of wonderful creatures of all stripes, Star Wars takes us to that galaxy a long time a go and far far away where there are adventures, cool ships, and magic space wizards. In my opinion, Star Wars introduced the world to some of the coolest and most iconic ships. Like the wedge-shaped Star Destroyers that struck terror into all who saw them, or the Millennium Falcon, the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy. And who could forget the characters. Definitely a diverse cast in terms of archetypes, Luke the naive and idealist farmboy, Leia the tough no-nonsense princess, Han Solo the lovable rogue, Darth Vader one of the most feared men in the Empire and an extremely iconic villain. The list goes on. Even if the galaxy is almost always at war, be it the clone wars, galactic civil war, or other conflicts, it was somewhere I always wanted to go some day. Meet the characters, try not to get force-choked, fly a ship through hyperspace. Star Wars may have started as three very well-done movies, but it has turned into an incredible multimedia franchise. The Legends series (formerly expanded universe) really fleshed out the galaxy and lore beyond what the movies did and so did the prequels. Say what you will, but they had some really good aspects to them. Then there are the games like my favorite of all time, Empire At War, game that would transport you into that galaxy far far away for a few hours at a time and let you blow up stormtroopers or rebel scum to your hearts content. Or clones or clankers (battle droids) if you prefer that. The fans have definitely done their part too, like the 501st Legion and Rebel Legion, two incredible professional-quality Star Wars costuming organizations (both of which I want to join some day). They really do their part to bring the galaxy to life. 

Disney/Pixar

Ah, Disney, the company that has been entertaining us with beloved child-friendly characters and stories for many decades. A lot of generations can say they grew up with at least one Disney movie. I love how Disney movies appeal to people of all ages. They have characters both kids and adults adore and stories and even humor for both adults and children as well. Then there’s Kingdom Hearts, the massive Disney and Final Fantasy crossover that brings tons of Disney characters into one universe. Also Disneyland and Disney parks which bring the magic of Disney to life with animatronics, costumed actors, and various other things. Unless someone outright hates Disney or animated films, there’s bound to be something in the Disney canon for almost everyone. I have too many favorite Disney films to name, but some I’m particularly fond of are Mulan, Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph, Alice in Wonderland (my namesake). I’m definitely planning some Disney cosplays in the future, and now that Disney owns Star Wars, those characters could count too. 

Fire Emblem

A tactical RPG with one of the world’s saltiest fanbases (at least in my opinion). I’ve described the series as chess-meets-Final-Fantasy to people who have never heard of it. Basically you have an army of very relatable characters who can talk to each other for combat bonuses and you have a bunch of enemies and undoubtably a giant evil dragon to fight. These games have been pegged as being rather difficult, considering weapons can break mid-battle, characters who die in battle never come back (until recent games), and experience points are limited (more in older games). Fire Emblem used to be such a niche series, only known to a few dedicated fans, but luckily Fire Emblem Awakening saved the series and made it really popular, to the point of being a mainstream series now. I only got into the series in high school, but I’ve been hooked ever since. The mix of strategy, RPG elements, and interesting characters and plots really was a winning combination. The character relations are deep, especially when there are 40+ playable characters per game. Each character can talk to around half a dozen others several times, revealing character backstory, personality, and interesting and sometimes funny interactions between them. I think Fire Emblem Awakening is one of my all-time favorites, and not just because it saved the series. It was a great standalone game. Some of my favorite characters are Lilina from Binding Blade, Nino from Blazing Sword (just Fire Emblem in the international release), Lissa, Chrom, Frederick, Robin, and Nowi from Awakening, Flora and Mozu from Fates. I even cosplay Mozu. I should honestly dust that cosplay off and wear it again. I love the character.

 Hyperdimension Neptunia

Definitely still a rather niche series. It’s extremely meta and loves trampling on the fourth wall. This series is basically the video game console war (Wii vs Playstation 3 vs Xbox 360) with all the players (pun intended) personified as anime girls. It’s not just those systems either. Sega is a major player, as in main character major, and video game piracy is personified too. The characters are fantastic and their interactions are equal parts endearing and hilarious. There are way too many video game references and tidbits. Like how Vert (Xbox personification) complains about overheating just like a real Xbox 360. Or how the enemies you fight are based on classic video game enemies like the ghosts from Pac-Man or the space invaders. This franchise is rather unique for me in that I like almost every character. With Star Wars or Fire Emblem for example, there are definitely a fair number of characters I’m neutral towards, but both those franchises have way more characters than Neptunia. I think my favorite characters are Vert and Nepgear (personification of the Sega Game Gear). 

RWBY

Say what you will about the animation style at first (believe me, I was turned off at first but then I came back years later to give it another try) but this series has some of the most epic fight sequences and choreography in any series I’ve seen. All the main characters have superpowers of varying sorts called semblances and throw in a bunch of cool weapons that are also guns and you’ve got a recipe for epic combat. It’s so tragic and sad that Monty Oum, the series creator passed away, since he was a real driving force behind the epic fight choreography. I normally don’t like series just because the fighting is good (I’m not into most shounen battle anime). There needs to be more than just epic fights. I like character-driven stories and RWBY provides quite the diverse and likable cast. The team dynamics (RWBY stands for the names of the four characters on team RWBY) make for very interesting character interactions. 

Disgaea

Probably the most wonderfully absurd fandom on my list. Disgaea is about playing as the demons as they get into mischief and are forced to fight even worse demons and sometimes rogue human super-villains and angels too. Also did I mention the exploding peg-leg penguins called Prinnies who also talk like surfers for some reason? Because they do exist and they’re so great they even got a few games that star them as the main character... even though they’re supposed to be the fall guy and cheap slave labor of the Disgaea universe. The main characters, Laharl being a great example, are a departure from the ‘good guy’ protagonists of your typical RPG. He’s greedy, petty, and likes to brag about himself. Sure he’ll do the right thing after much prodding, but he really likes to play the role of the villain too. Aside from the absurd characters and plots, there’s the absurd game mechanics. Lv 99 look too low for you? Try Lv 9999 and then reset to lv 1 and grind back to Lv 9999 multiple times. Also stats reaching the millions and billions and damage several magnitudes beyond that with the right overpowered sword (which you can level up by going inside it). 

Tales Series

A series that’s somewhat similar to Final Fantasy in terms of being a mostly fantasy RPG, but also with hack-and-slash team battle mechanics. It’s a series that I feel is terribly underrated and needs more love. Final Fantasy is great but I feel like Tales deserves more recognition. The series has a lot of great characters and heavily emphasizes character interactions and character development. A perfect example is Luke fon Fabre, a character whose spoiled, whiny, abrasive personality makes him hard to like, but due to certain events he becomes one of the most beloved protagonists in the series (and a personal favorite of mine). This series is known for playing archetypes and tropes straight (like the chosen one trope, or unshakable destiny) and then turning them on their heads and deconstructing them, only to reconstruct them, then deconstruct them again. The combat is fast-paced and exciting, and while I love turn-based combat as well, the Tales fights, especially boss battles are fantastic. I describe the series as Final Fantasy meets Super Smash Bros in terms of battle system. My favorite game in the series is Tales of the Abyss.

"SHUT THE FUCK UP SISSY BOY I'LL BE THERE IN TWO MINUTES, JUST WATCH ME"

Farlef awoke early the next day in a pile of bodies. Hung over from the night before he knew not where he nor his clothes were. "Ah Chris, that fire was truly terrible, and Rey, murdered in the night and thrown into a ditch were a raccoon pissed on his corpse and Lloyd, what a fat fuck" Farlef thought with a smile as he approached the hill.

Looking at the hill Farlef knew he was in for a climb, it was a large mound of dirt, gravel and old Indian bones that overlooked the vast graveyard.

It took Farlef all of two minutes to climb to the top. Four of those minutes where spent looking for a nearby Haunter that popped up on his Pokemon Go app. He liked to think that it was Sam that he just caught but he new that Sam's spirit pokemon was Pelipper.

At the summit of Mount Titty Caca Farlef looked around for his father who seemed to of left. Then like a ninja springing a master trap, from the top of a tree a wheelchair came crashing down, attached to a rope and a complex system of pullies and Farlef's dad was sitting in front of him with his weapon drawn. Farlef was shocked at the spectacle til he saw the 3 Mexicans working the rope and figured his father hired these day laborers to help him set this all up. Regardless of how it happened it to took a lot to surprise Farlef, even more to find good Mexican labor in Deer Park.

"I always knew it would end like this" Farlef's Dad said.

"What are you talking bout old man, I don't know how or why you got this way but we should bury the hatchet, too many people are dead, why shed more blood, also please Father don't sit so close to the edge" Farlef pleaded with his crippled yet heavily armed old man.

"NO YOU SUMBITCH YOU'RE THE REASON I AM LIKE THIS, YOU'RE THE REASON I CAN'T FEEL ANY PAIN BUT THE PAIN THAT KNOWING MY SON IS A HOMOSEXUAL" HE SHOUTED.

"DO YOU REMEMBER 20 YEARS AGO, THAT FATEFUL NIGHT I TOOK YOU TO THAT WRESTLING MATCH. I REMEMBER IT LIKE IT WAS YESTERDAY CAUSE THE ONLY MEMORY I CAN REMEMBER IS MEMORIZING THAT MY SON IS A HOMOSEXUAL. IT WAS SUPPOSE TO BE A FUN NIGHT, ME AND MY BOY, WATCHING GROWN MEN IN THEIR UNDERWEAR ALL GREASED UP AND ROLLING AROUND. THE SMELL OF MAN STANK AND STALE BEER IN THE AIR. IT WAS MAGIC. THEN THE FIRST MATCH I SAW A LOOK IN YOUR EYES, A LOOK THAT WOULD HARM ME IN WAYS NOTHING COULD POSSIBLY HARM ME EVER AGAIN AND IF I KNEW AFTER THAT MOMENT I WOULD NEVER FEEL PAIN IN MY LEGS AGAIN BUT THE PAIN OF KNOWING MY SON IS A HOMOSEXUAL THEN I WOULD OF STEPPED ON A LEGO ONE LAST TIME." He screamed with a mad look in his eye, fingers twitching ready to fire his crossbow/rifle combo'd weapon.

"Dad I was 6, I knew long before that I was of a different nature" Farlef muttered.

"THEN ON THE WAY HOME, I HEARD YOU GO ON AND ON BOUT THOSE STRAPPING MUSCULAR HERCULEAN TITANS WITH THEIR RIPPED ABS AND TONED FIT BODIES. IT DROVE ME RIGHT INTO THAT TREE. FOR 6 MONTHS I WAS IN A COMA, RELIVING THAT MOMENT OVER AND OVER. I WAS COMATOSE, THE ONLY THING THAT KEPT ME GOING WAS KNOWING I HAD A STRAIGHT, MANLY SON IN JOHN. IT TOOK ME 20 YEARS OF PHYSICAL THERAPY, FALLING DOWN STAIRS AND NOT FEELING ANY PAIN BUT KNOWING MY SON IS A HOMOSEXUAL, STABBING MYSELF REPEATEDLY IN THE LEG TO TRY AND FEEL ANY PAIN EXCEPT FOR THE PAIN OF KNOWING MY SON IS A HOMOSEXUAL BUT TODAY THAT PAIN WILL BE REPLACED WITH GLEE KNOWING I SEND YOU THE SPAWN OF BEELZEBUB HIMSELF BACK TO WHENCE YOU CAME" He shouted.

With one final huff as he was bout to fire he noticed his son was slowing drifting away from him. He was contemplating how his son could move backwards so fast and then realized he was rolling away from him.

"Dad I tried to warn you bout the sign" Farlef said pointing to the nearby sign on the tree.

"Dad are you ok" Farlef yelled out to his father. The man might have just tried to kill him but he was still family. If he stopped talking to everyone that tried to kill him he would have no friends left.

"adhniadjaldnDDdfsmpfna" Farlef's dad gurgled back, draped over a frozen piece of ice, legs being gnawed on my local alligators, not that he could feel it.

"What was that dad" Farlef yelled back.

"I'm fine you fairy, this won't kill me, nothing will" As the current dragged him down the river.

"Glad you're alright Dad, see you at Christmas?"

"Yeah and don't forget the Bundt cake this time" his father yelled back.

As Farlef watched his father drift away as a dog swam out to him and climbed onto glacier he was floating on, he was now the Spokane River's problem.

"Papi and my father always said that when I get older I would understand. Well, I finally did. I learned something from these two men. I learned to give love and get love unconditionally. You just have to accept people for what they are, and I learned the greatest gift of all. The saddest thing in life is wasted talent, and the choices that you make will shape your life forever. But you can ask anybody from my neighborhood, and they'll just tell you this is just another Deer Park tale." Bryan quietly mused to himself.
