On this episode of Cracked Spines, we discuss A Taste of Gold and Iron by Alexandra Rowland, a book that—among other things—has a beautiful cover that Cyrus and I end up arguing about anyway. Not THAT much makes it into the actual episode. But know that it was passionate.
Behind the scenes, there was a somewhat in-depth discussion off-mic about how the knowledge that the author was in tumblr and thus pretty easy to tag might influence our honest discussion of the book. We basically settled on if we like the book, we'll tag em, and if we don't like the book then yknow why put in information in the post that we don't strictly need to. Anyway, hi @ariaste ! We really liked the book! Cyrus basically twisted my arm until I moved in up my TBR list because they knew I'd like it, and damn if that son of a gun doesn't know me. I’m such a sucker for fantasy macroeconomics.
We discuss duty, fealty, the public performance of politics, and the literary art of truly conveying how awkward a moment can be. Enjoy listening to me get so insanely in my head about how a character's name is pronounced that it derails my ability to speak. I’m beginning to get legitimately concerned about the stress Proper Nouns induce in me.

can anyone recommend a *women* hosted or at least, mostly hosted by women podcast about tolkien's works that is not from a Christian perspective? I know this is a very niche ask lol 😅
I'm wanting a tolkien podcast to listen to, but tbh (and this is not hate on men in general lol) but I'm kinda tired of the majority of tolkien-themed podcast being from a very male-centric perspective lol
And the only podcast I could find that is hosted by women seemed to be a bit Christian/catholic/religious focused/from that perspective. which is not really my cup of tea (i don't mind podcasts that TALKS about Tolkien's faith bc i don't think you can really fully separate that from his work, i just don't want the podcast itself to be a "Christian podcast" lol)
Honestly I'd start one myself if I could find some other women (or feminist men/nb folks/anyone) who are interested in exploring Tolkien's work , especially if they were also into more diverse representations of Tolkien's work and middle earth in general etc.
so anyway, if you know of any podcasts that fit this very niche, very specific qualifications, send me a reply or ask with more details??
:)

Making creative things is scary.
You can't put something creative into the world without making yourself vulnerable, because a piece of you is inside of it. It's going to get judged, which means you get judged. And most of that judgement is rejection. It's enough to put off most people from ever trying. But the converse is true too. Because making creative things is so scary, it's also so wonderful when it pays off. It's wonderful when you judge *yourself* and you realize: what I made is really good. And it's wonderful – superbly, magically, beatifically wonderful - when you premiere something and *others* are as into it as you are. All those words to say: the premiere of Metropolis has been a dream. You like it, you really like it! The feedback has been beyond fantastic - so many people love it, so many want to know more, so many want to know what happens next. When the first question is always: "when is your next episode coming out!?", you know you're onto something.
If you haven't given the first episode a try yet - give it a shot. :) The next one is just a week away, so won't have long to wait to find out what happens next...

DnD 5e has done a lot of bad in the TTRPG space but the worst thing it's done as far as I'm concerned is completely erased people's ability to distinguish between whether they want to play a "wargame with roleplay" type TTRPG or a "guided collaborative storytelling" type TTRPG. This is because 5e has (somehow?) convinced people that it's both, when in reality it's just kind of a poorly made wargame with roleplay type.
This makes it extra hard to recommend them another game. It's so hard to find people to play other system with nowadays because "I like DnD" could mean "I would probably be happier playing Pathfinder" or "I love trying to force an indie 1 page rpg into the DnD rules" and there's no way to know which one, even if you try and talk to them, because the distinction has been so thoroughly erased by WotC that people don't even know there's a distinction between the two. And good luck trying to get someone to try 2 new systems.....

Pretty hard to keep your wits about you while your skin is melting off, isn't it?
But God, it's so beautiful!
The searing white flame? The utter and total destruction? Nothing will be the same after this.
Maybe telling us a story will help you appreciate it?
Echoes of the Eldritch is a Magnus Archives fan podcast that takes place in one of the worlds that the fears got sent to. It follows a new archival crew in a new archive, as they learn to live in their newly frightening world.

- artists
- voice actors (for a few remaining parts)
Interested? Find out more right on this blog, or by joining us on discord, where you can also apply to be part of the team!
