something that far too few people--including other autistics--acknowledge about higher-support autism is the defenselessness that comes with it, namely when you don't have a high-quality caregiver or support system.

so many people only talk about the impairments that come with low-support autism, the things that you can easily cope with through self-accommodation, sensory aids, and understanding; so little attention goes out to those of us who can't help ourselves, at least not enough to remain physically safe and healthy on our own.

I'm visibly dirty (dermatitis neglecta) because I have anxiety attacks when I try to task-switch and bathe. nearly a quarter of My teeth are decayed because I go months without brushing. at the time of writing, I've lost over 3% of My body weight in the past month due to inertia preventing Me from eating more than once a day.

I can't simply use a schedule or set alarms, because I end up not acknowledging either of them (except to turn the latter off). the "simple fixes" that low-support autistics recommend offer little-to-no improvement for Me.

that's ultimately the difference between low-support autism and medium/high-support autism: someone with LSN can accommodate themself enough to stay afloat, whereas someone with MSN/HSN literally needs another person to do some or all things for them.

because of this, people whose caregivers believe they don't need assistance (My situation), believe their autism can be disciplined away, are too careless or busy to help them, and those who don't have and can't easily access a caregiver at all are left in a totally isolated position.

at best, either our caregivers' attitudes or our autism miraculously improve and we're able to get our needs met. at worst, we continuously suffer until we experience a medical crisis from the neglect or seriously injure (if not kill) ourselves for the same reason.

this isn't to say that autism--even higher-support autism--is all horrible, but I really do wish that more autistic advocacy focused on relieving this helplessness, rather than just the self-advocacy of low-support individuals.

I think the whole “my life expectancy is lower?!” Things with autism are getting a bit out of hand. Taking mental health and suicide rates out of this. Because most of these people who are saying it are; mostly if not fully healthy, are low support needs, white, not visibly autistic, etc.

And it kinda makes me upset. Because like, no Brenda. You’re probably going to live a pretty long life compared to the high support needs person who needs 1 on 1 care everyday.

And I think these people don’t realize that most of these studies, are done on higher support needs autistic people. At least most of them are centered around them. Yes, high support needs people do have a lower life expectancy. Why? Because we’re often neglected, killed, die, etc. why? Because of our neglectful caregivers. Because of often comorbid disorders that come along often with high(er) support needs autism. And yes, there is even a study that was done and it went circling around, and people discovered later on that it was about the death rate for high support needs people involving drowning because of their risk of being caught in water. Because there is actual scientific proof that autistic people are attracted to water. And yes, this does lead to autistic people drowning at a higher rate then their allistic peers.

No. Your life expectancy probably isn’t lower, or at least not as low as you think. (Again, taking out mental health aspects).

You know whose life expectancy is lower? Mine. A nonverbal person who relies on a caregiver. A Latino Jew who does look very Jewish. A person who can’t affectively communicate in emergency situations. A person who relies on others. A person who elopes. A person who doesn’t notice cars. That’s me. But even mine probably isn’t as low as other High support needs people.

Mine is lower. But not as low as my HIGH support needs brothers and sisters and siblings who rely solely on other people and don’t get certain things, and are a danger to themselves. To the HIGH support needs people who would eat dangerous things, who would run out of the house and into the street, who are black, who are indigenous, who are POC. Who are neglected. Who live with abusive caregivers. Those are the people with lower life expectancies.

as a caregiver, i can't look at the members i work with and just give up. i am full of spite and unapologetic authenticity.

Two posts in one day? It's more likely than you think! Anyways, today's fundraiser is for the family and sons of Reyna and Javier. Reyna and Javier lost their lives in a fatal crash, leaving their three sons without parents. Of their sons, one of them was dependent on their parents as he has been wheelchair bound all his life. In this brief period of time, he has lost both his parents and his primary caregivers. The entire family is feeling the financial strain of the sudden loss, so every help counts. If you're new here, or even if you're not since I'm just starting to post again, I strive to bring attention to different fundraisers in all my posts. I primarily focus on sharing the stories of individuals in dire need, such as refugees in Gaza or those experiencing sudden homelessness, however there is no comparison between struggles, grief, and loss here! So I also take the time to share the stories of families such as Reyna and Javier's, and would deeply appreciate it if you could show them some much needed love as well.

I won't say too much, but as someone who has had the cards stacked against them (being a poc, nonbinary, queer, a religious minority, etc.) and has experienced my own share of loss, I can say that while the pain doesn't feel the same, the knife digs itself into you either way. My family was privileged enough to afford a funeral for my grandfather, who recently passed, but with many other family members getting older in age and being taken by the devil that is cancer, it does make me nervous as to how we will make it through. Regardless, I just hope that my plea and the stories I share will implore you to help others—not out of moral or societal obligation or to save face, but out of humanity and compassion <3

Whitaker made it an hour with needing new scrubs congrats! Also he got food too!

Spoilers for Ep. 6 under the cut.

First give it up for the GOAT Dana. Mel really needed that reassurance and it was great it came from Dana, her vs Langdon is such a great comedic relief and then her stepping in with Robby and hospital admin. She’s the real MVP of that ED.

Great storylines this week, we’ll start with Mel. It seems her guilt with Ginger stems from her own guilt with her sister and the inpatient program she has her in. She’s doing her best and she feels guilt over it, I want more of her storyline with her sister. I get it as a former caregiver myself, that storyline really hits home for me.

This week was all family drama…

Javadi and her mom, she’s under immense pressure and McKay was so real for saving her from that hot appy consult, just love their storyline and I hope it really helps Javadi blossom as the series continues. Literally cringed at her mom though. Also the exchange about Captain Morgan and resetting the hip, she’s adorable.

Santos and Garcia… first THANK YOU GARCIA for absolutely scolding Santos for her cockiness she needed that. A bloody scalpel to the foot? Come on! It did not help me like her better but just glad she got reprimanded for her cockiness. Also the hell is going on with those two? Garcia I have questions… also the cut to the Nepalese woman watching the exchange between Garcia and Santos hilarious.

Langdon, I really love him, this is all carry on. Though I will say the brain worms explanation went exactly how I thought it was going to go.

Mohan getting recognized by Dr. Robby, I know she needed that. I really like her character and I just want her to succeed always. Please my girl is doin her best.

Dr. Collins stuck in the crossfire over the teen pregnancy, I feel for her, but the editing made us think it was going to be a bigger fall come on now no need for the dramatics from this show. She’s handling it well, but they are a bit annoying. Also I love that this show recognizes that POC tend to be treated differently when it comes to medicine between Collins’ exchange with the testicular torsion and Mohan with the sickle cell patient, it’s great to see it being acknowledged. The relief on that mother’s face when Collins walked in, like that was real.

Also Myrna please leave the men in that ED alone lol.

Finally Dr. Robby… Dr. Robby who has me twirling my hair and kicking my feet. It’s just older, more mature, confident Carter, I just love it. Any time he walks in and needs to deal with a patient in distress to take over the scene it’s just Carter. The lawsuit can come for me I don’t care! I said what I said.

The exchange between him and Collins? The hell happened between those two! Then you have him with Ginger, adorable please continue doctor. Finally him and the brain dead patient who OD’ed, glad that storyline seems to be wrapping up, it was hard to watch the poor family advocate to try to get them to donate the organs, I know between that and the note in the lunch Robby was feeling that grief creep up, someone hug Robby please.

That mass casualty incident is coming, I just know it’s going to be a shooting either at the school or music festival one of the two. That’s our climax, I’m worried. Also where is angry waiting room guy? We didn’t see him this week.

Honorable mentions the betting pool, the techs who for sure deserve more pay and the frat boy idiots, which that collarbone being popped into place made me cringe.

This affects flavor text.

2 Coping Mechanisms (Alcohol, Tobacco, Drugs, Sleeping around, Avoidance, Overspending, Humor, *Hobby (overworking self) [Anger, Fake/forced happiness, Sadness, Indifference].) Each coping mechanism opens a variable and a storyline. You can choose two, though choosing one related to emotional responses [between brackets] automatically blocks out the others.
