Posture, Pain, and the Pectoralis Minor (Pec Minor) The pectoralis minor is a small thick muscle found underneath the pectoralis major near the shoulder attaches from the mid front rib cage to the front of the shoulder blade. The pec minors function is to provide stabilization to the shoulder blade and assist with pulling the shoulder blade forward. This function impacts both good and bad posture. Prolonged poor postural positions ie shoulders hunched, head forward typically leads to the pec minor shortening/tightening sustaining the position and making it increasingly more difficult to correct. Continuation of this muscle imbalance can lead to pain/symptoms in the neck/shoulders/arms/head. A home program including stretches such as the doorway/wall stretch, manual therapy, and postural strategies can help retrain the pec minor and other postural muscles to treat current symptoms and prevent future symptoms.
