hi i'm reading Animal Triste by Monika Maron right now, and I want to write down my notes here because why not

this part here is one of the many lines i highlighted in this book, and i kind of arranged(?) what i wrote on my notebook. there're no spoilers and this is not a book that a spoiler can ruin. if you've read it before, youre sooo welcome, please write a comment if you feel like it. but, even if you've not read it, its not important, we can talk. thats all ig :)

I don’t believe in the glittering, pain-driven narratives often told about love. There’s no such thing as "eternal happiness." No one will live forever with their great love. Desire for another person, in my opinion, inherently brings a profound sense of longing. If two people finally come together, they must either find new ways to keep love alive or settle for a kind of love that carries less intense yearning. I think the core emotion is longing—this might even apply to platonic forms of love. In those cases, longing is likely the primary motivator as well. Ultimately, it’s distinct from familial or friendly love, but I can’t quite pinpoint what makes it so intense.

I first encountered the idea that love requires reinvention or a kind of dynamism in one of ContraPoints’ videos. This perspective reframes love as not something static but as a constantly evolving, living process.

Here, the author emphasizes the tragic and desire-driven nature of love—a love strengthened by death and "impossibility." Love isn’t merely about happiness; it’s also shaped by loss, absence, and the shadow of mortality.

The dinosaur metaphor in the text reflects the view of those who perceive love as a powerful yet extinct phenomenon from the past. (This is a view I don’t agree with, just like the author.) The paradox is this: by contemplating love’s impossibility, people immortalize it while simultaneously clinging to a myth of "incompetence." This myth is perpetuated by unhappy individuals who either never experienced pure forms of love in their youth or whose relationships were shaped by an early fear of death. But love is tied not only to death but also to transformation.

This duality of love—expressed through opposing ideas—renders it both a memory lost in the past, like the dinosaurs, and a phenomenon constantly rediscovered. I don’t think people are "bad" at love (and anyway, it’s not a matter of skill). Instead, they learn to adapt to love’s "finite" nature and the challenges of attaining it—perhaps intertwined with the drive to long for the impossible.

In the end, I believe love isn’t a myth but rather a kind of "continuous evolution".
