- anne and mary as a mirror to stede and ed. but in the end. oh, in the end they realize they don't have to be the kind of couple for whom it will end in flames. they can choose not to set it all on fire

- but also. BUT ALSO. change!!! anne erasing it all for mary, because she does everything to the extreme (cough - mr. edward "i was all in" teach - cough), and it is the only way she can change?? by grabbing it all by the root and pulling?? will ed always be like that too??

- or can change be gentle and freeing? can change be turning into a bird, embracing the wind, getting swayed by the sea that you love so much??? is change not always painful????

- THE WHISPERED CONFESSIONS. I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT YOU. HE'S NOT SAYING "I LOVE YOU" BECAUSE HE KNOWS IT DOESN'T CONVEY WHAT HE MEANS ANYWAY. it's too narrow, too general. ed wouldn't be able to hear what's really behind it, not unless stede spells it out, not unless he earns back some semblance of trust that will convince ed that he means it. he doesn't just love him, he loves BEING WITH HIM. knowing that they are existing within each other's universe and that they can reach out to each other. - the fact that. wait i need a minute. wait. the fact that. the fact that what brings the broken crew back together is the person who is the MOST broken. the fact that they take one look at a man who seems so adrift and so lost that they push back whatever unresolved tension there is between them, to try and keep izzy afloat. to make him feel welcome, to make him feel like a human being!!! to make him realize him being broken doesn't mean he's unsalvageable or unlovable or unworthy of caring and help. and they know to approach him from afar too!! they know to leave the leg at his door and give him space!! and to end it all with a cherry on top!!! the little note!!! it's so warm it's so cute it's so them?? lighthearted and teasing and so so full of love??? and izzy just. cries at the sight of it?? of being offered kindness, pure and unbridled??? i AM A PUDDLE ON THE FLOOR RIGHT NOW.

- hopeful endings my beloved. a crazy guy makes you realize change is possible and for the first time in a while you smile hopefully at the sky and when the man you love tells you to come with you run behind him like an excited child with the promise of joy in front of you. you're at your lowest point and there are people there to pick you up and to make you feel welcome and warm and Real. you stand up in your new leg built out of pure love and you look up into the night sky and the sea goes on below you and you smile.

also like i keep reading fics where people try to spin daniel's turning as something he was sort-of into, and that he sort-of consented to it (although with his life being threatened he could never consent fully, yanno) and also it tends to be intermingled with him and armand having sex and like. i know im a killjoy for saying this but i really hope in canon it isn't like that. like the turning is this massively violating and cruel thing and honestly i think it'd be a lot more interesting for it to be one more issue the two of them have to move past before they have any sort of relationship with each other

I honestly just think it's funny that so many people have been watching ofmd as a 'comfort show' lmao like I'm over here specifically watching for the angst. I crave pain and suffering. As soon as High On A Rocky Ledge played in the pilot I was hooked because I knew I was in for intense emotional turmoil. Red Flags is now my favorite episode of the entire series. I honestly didn't expect Izzy to survive as long as he did. His fucked up relationship with Blackbeard has fed me so well.

Of course I adore the love story, and the fact that Ed and Stede's love is an absolute, an immutable fact, of the show's premise allows me to enjoy the angst all the more. But I feel like some people need to be reminded: David Jenkins never promised you fluff. He never promised no deaths, no tragedy, no violence, no difficult topics. Personally I think including a fair deal of all of those makes the hope, the love, and the comedy shine all the brighter and have more meaning. You don't have to agree, but you can't assign expectations to a show that never made such promises. There was never false advertising. David set out to tell the story of two troubled, complicated adults navigating love and a long-term relationship in an often harsh and unfair world, finding community and making meaningful gains in self-actualization along the way. Ultimately it is a 'feel good' story but it's a rocky and winding road meant to mirror the messiness of our real world. Maybe you need to step back and re-evaluate where canon ends and your headcanons begin, and what the 'goals' of the show actually are that may differ from what you're looking for in media, and not blame Jenkins et al. for 'betraying you' when they're just telling their story the way they set out to.

Ok here's my thoughts on the confession.

I think Crowley has been pining after Aziraphale for 6000 years, but always assumed it wasn't reciprocated (or, in the moments where he thought that it was maybe possible, he wasn't willing to risk what they already had), so he never did anything about it.

And then Nina assumes that they're a couple, even the "bit-on-the-side" part makes the assumption that Aziraphale is interested in him like that. Crowley allows himself to hope as he has scarcely hoped before. But he's still just a little too scared to make the final step. Plus, then there's the whole thing with Gabriel to deal with first.

But even before Nina and Maggie give him The Talk, he's talking about "us time" and breakfast at the Ritz and putting the bookshop back together the way Aziraphale likes it. He has complete confidence that Aziraphale will hear whatever the Metatron has to say, come home, and everything will go back to the way it ways. And then maybe from here he'll be able to, a few months or years down the road maybe, find the courage to tell him how he feels.

But then Nina and Maggie sit him down and point out to him how lacking their communication has been over 6 millennia. They give him that final push to finally do something about it. So Crowley went into this confession with at least some expectation that it would end well, because he has always been, at heart, an optimist. That's who he is. So that just makes the whole thing so much more heartbreaking that it just got thrown back into his face with what he hears as "you've never been and never will be good enough for me Crowley". So now I've just hurt my own feelings and I live in Neil Gaiman's walls.
