This is a synthesizer called Playbox. It's really really difficult to get used to. It creates very random samples that you have to pick at in order to get the sound you want. Sometimes, the sounds are kinda extraordinary.

Native Instruments Playbox sampler virtual instrument that decides everything with dice REVEIW
Tumblr media
Playbox, announced by Native Instrument, is a Kontak-based virtual instrument that is a sampler, but is an experimental instrument created with a focus on the ‘random’ function. Chords Samples FX Easy to quickly create experimental attempts or code harmony
Tumblr media
Playbox is an instrument with such a clear identity that you can immediately understand the concept of the instrument by turning it on and hitting a single note on the keyboard. Although various operations are possible within the plug-in, from what I have used so far, I feel that it is not a versatile instrument that can significantly change the first impression.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The sound of the Playbox is created through the manipulation of three sections: Chords, Samples, and FX. There is a dice icon at the top of the plugin and in each section. By rolling this dice, you can randomly combine all settings. In fact, the core of Playbox is that you can make sounds just by rolling these dice, even if you don't know anything about the details that will be explained later.
Chords
When you set the tonality and octave, 8 chords consisting of up to 6 notes are randomly created. The eight chords are assigned to each of the eight keys on the keyboard: do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, si, and do. When using the Playbox, there are only eight white keys, so it feels like you are using a touchpad of sorts. The tonality and octave of the eight chords can be set in the plug-in window, so you can easily get the right chord combination even without knowing anything about harmony. However, not all codes created were different codes. For example, there were cases where multiple Cmaj7s were created with different tensions and sequences.
Tumblr media
Of course, there is also a function that allows you to create your own code. When you press the circle button at the bottom and it turns red, if you press the keyboard, the notes played in order are saved and made into a code. There is a button at the top called Piano Mode. When you press this button, all sample sounds will be changed to EP sounds. The sounds of the samples included in the Playbox are somewhat experimental, and in fact, I thought it would be a good idea to just create random codes using the EP sounds without samples.
Samples
The notes specified within the code can be designated as different sample sounds for each note in the ‘Sample’ section. The samples provided by Playbox are divided into Synth, Instrument, Bass, Voice, and Noise, and there is also a User item that allows users to load and use samples directly.
Tumblr media
You can try a variety of things, such as changing only the samples of notes in one chord, changing the first note of all chords to Synth, or randomly changing all samples.
FX
In the FX section, you can set motion effects and 6 audio effects. Motion effects can determine how a chord is played in three ways: Arp, Strum, and Grain. If you set it to Arp and press one key on the keyboard, the notes specified in the chord set will be played as an extended chord according to the project BPM. If you turn off this motion effect part, it becomes a normal chord playing with all notes sounding at the same time.
Tumblr media
Below that, there is also a modulator that allows you to manipulate the LFO, envelope, etc. FX settings can be manipulated in real time using the modulation wheel and XY pad in macro and performance controls. The names and settings of these macros change each time you change the preset. When you first turn on Playbox, the large XY pad that appears on the main screen controls this part.
Easy to quickly create experimental attempts or code harmony
Playbox is an instrument that allows you to easily create chord sets and samples that fit your key, even if you don't know harmonics or sampling technology. As a native instrument, various and detailed operations are possible without worrying about lack of functionality. However, since the core functions can all be obtained through dice rolls, these detailed control functions are secondary. For beginners, it’s ‘no need to have it’, and for pros, it’s ‘no need to use it.’ The randomly generated sounds weren't that strange. However, I felt that presets that could be used universally in all situations were not created. Rather than using artificial intelligence to suggest sounds that fit a specific atmosphere, sounds are randomly combined, which seems to create somewhat profound or abstract sounds. I think the sounds made up of randomly created chords are pretty good. You can keep picking random chords that are good for creating short loops for repetitive beats. According to Native Instrument, Playbox was a project started by a few creators. As a result, I didn't get the feeling that the manufacturer had made it to target specific users. In other words, it is an instrument that is ‘amazing, but I’m not sure who needs it.’ In that respect, it is questionable whether it is an appropriate price ($199) to purchase as a standalone instrument. Rather, it would be a good idea to try it out through the KOMPLETE NOW subscription system ($9.99 per month). Read the full article

Sophie Turner at the Playbox Theater (Warwick) on July 2nd for a special event "An evening with Sophie Turner".
She talked about her career, in a special one-afternoon event, in aid of Playbox’s ‘Raise The Roof Campaign’, to support the restoration of The Dream Factory’s roof.
Sophie was in conversation with Elle magazine’s Lena de Casparis and this formed the centrepiece of a dynamic evening of discussion.

I have been working on a little pumpkin house for my critters. most of the furniture is handmade out of various kinds of cardboard, foam and fabric, as well as some early forays into knitting! I'm proudest of the little wood stove, which can be turned on and off. now they will be warm in this coming winter!
my upcoming plans include decorating the walls: it is very plain in there and I'm a fan of cluttered coziness. I'm thinking of doing some cloth canopies, maybe even embroidering some little tapestries, as I've gotten into that recently as well. I also want to add a hammock to the ceiling and a little nest on one of the walls, so everyone has a place to sleep! I also want to clean up the edges of the window into their little life, as its messy and crumbly right now.
as you can also see, there have been new additions to the family. a chestnut raccoon I found online, as well as a pickle weed hedgehog and a tiny tiny rabbit baby I got in a sea-themed blind bag. I have some more critters which were added to my collection, but I left them at home! (I found a pretty rare critter in my old playboxes!!)
that's all from me, for now.

Life is Strange - What if Esteban hadn't died? - Part II
Sean goes to the garage to check on his dad, who is beneath the car, fixing it. ─ How's it going? ─ It's going fine, son. What about you? ─ I'm… I don't know. ─ Do you need to talk? ─ No… I mean… nevermind. ─ Whenever you need to talk, just reach me out, son. I understand you might be going through a difficult phase. I get you, I've been there too. ─ Dad, come on… I'm not a kid. ─ Okay… since you're there, could you please give me the wrench? ─ Which one? ─ The 16th millimeter one. ─ Okay, let me find it. Sean looks everywhere. He finally finds the wrench and hands it over to his dad. ─ Gracias, hijo. ─ Dad, don't you think you need to rest? ─ Well, maybe… I miss spending some time outside with my amazing hijos. You know, it's been a long time since we went to the woods. Sean stays silent for a few seconds. ─ Ehm, dad, are you hungry? ─ Kinda. ─ Follow me. ─ Okay, Sean… They go upstairs. Esteban goes to the bathroom to wash his hands while Daniel and Sean put the pizza on the table and grab the plates and forks. Their dad comes back.
─ Wow… it seems we are having pizza for dinner today. W-w-wait… where did you get it from? ─ I actually bought it. ─ With the 40 dollars I had given you? ─ Yes. It was Daniel's idea by the way. ─ You didn't need to… ─ Come on, Mr. Diaz! ─ Let's eat, I'm hungry! Sean laughs. ─ You're always hungry, Daniel! They all sit and eat the pizza. Sean looks at his father. He wants to suggest something. ─ Chef Diaz… ehm… why don't we go camping? Tomorrow is Saturday after all. ─ Hm… lemme see… what do you think, Daniel? ─ I don't like camping… the forest is cold. ─ Ugh, come on Daniel! ─ Sean complains. ─ I know the forest might be a scary, cold, and dirty place ─ Esteban comments. But it gives me a relaxing sensation. ─ But dad, it's so late! ─ Daniel complains. ─ Can you stop being so annoying, Daniel? ─ Hey, Sean, be patient with your little bro! Besides, he is right. Let's go there tomorrow. But I want you to get up earlier and prepare everything so we can enjoy every second of our "little trip". ─ Yeah, dad… we will. They finish eating. Esteban goes outside while Sean goes to his bedroom. ─ I can expect dad to become very chatty tomorrow during our trip ─ Sean laughs quietly. Daniel opens the door suddenly. He scares Sean a little with his zombie mask. ─ Woah!!! DO NOT ENTER MY ROOM WITHOUT… ─ I scared you, didn't I? Daniel laughs. ─ You didn't scare me… well, maybe… maybe for one second. ─ What are you doing? ─ Nothing. I was just thinking about life. ─ About Jenn, you mean? ─ No! I mean… it doesn't matter. I need some privacy right now, Daniel, so leave me alone, please. ─ But… what did you think about my mask? I did it myself. ─ It's cool. Now leave me alone. ─ Are you sad because you didn't go to that party? ─ No. I stayed with you and my dad. You're my priority. You two and my best friend Lyla. ─ Well, I'll leave you alone. But… can I ask you something first? Sean sighs. ─ What do you want? ─ A hug. Sean sighs again and hugs Daniel. ─ I love you, Sean. ─ Me too, Daniel. ─ Even though you're annoying sometimes… and a bad big brother. ─ And you're an annoying little brother. Now get out of here! Daniel leaves Sean's bedroom and goes to the living room. Esteban is watching a movie. ─ Dad, wanna play now? Sean expelled me from his room. And I feel lonely now. ─ Alright, son. Esteban turns the PlayBox on and holds the joystick. ─ Daniel, look, I know you're too young to understand it, but Sean sometimes needs some time alone. He's going through a hard phase in his life. You'll go through it in a few years too. ─ He used to be funnier in the past. Now he's become annoying. Esteban laughs. ─ Teenagers. You'll never understand them. The next day, in the morning, Daniel and Sean put everything they will need for the trip in the car. Sean and his dad are super excited.

Sophie Turner in the theater and ballet
Se7en (2008)
Scary play (2009)
Playbox Theatre - 25th anniversary (2011)
She is very clumsy, but is also a talented ballerina "For some reason, when I am doing ballet I am ok, but I literally take off my ballet shoes and fall over and hit my face." (2014)
I knew it would have to be drama or ballet, and I chose drama. (2015)
I wanted to pursue acting from a very young age and I have always been interested in it. I began acting when I joined my local theatre group (Playbox Theatre) when I was three and have been passionate about it ever since. (x)
"I was always creative from the age of about two. My best friend and I used to put on plays every time we hung out. It became something my life revolved around." She joined amateur-theatre groups from the age of four – "It was like breathing to me" – and was a passionate ballet dancer, but turned down a place at White Lodge, the Royal Ballet School, because she couldn’t bear to give up her one-hour acting class at the weekend. "I think it was a good decision in the end," she says drily. "I’m a bit too tall and I like pasta too much, so I am not sure I would have gone all the way to prima ballerina." Instead, she joined the cast of Game of Thrones when she was 13.
I’m passionate about lots of things. I’ll sit in my house in New York and paint. And I’m doing ballet again." (2019)

Oh, friend! I nearly forgot to send YOU asks for the WIP Game! Could you tell me a bit about "End of Angband" and "Here's to the ones who dream", please?? <3
Here's to the Ones Who Dream is a longfic (with the obvious disclaimer that my standards for 'longfic' are probably somewhat shorter than most people's) about Faramir. I've started on it a year and a half ago tbh 😅 and now what I've got (about his childhood) is in the middle of a rewrite and then I have to bring up his relationship with Gandalf, and his scholarly pursuits... and as always I find I don't know how far into his life it's supposed to go -- maybe the beginning of his military life? It's written in the context of his own reminiscences and right now I'm experimenting with tense and person, so it's kind of in the stage of being a playbox for my own headcanons, but I think it deserves a honourable mention for being one of the oldest fics I haven't wholly abandoned.
The title is a reference to his dreams (the specific kind Faramir is famous for) which are focused on a lot, at least in the early bits as I first envisaged them.
End Of Angband in its first iteration focuses on two of my OCs: Díriel (M, Noldo) and Lóreth (F, Silvan-Sindarin) who are both thralls in Angband; it's told from the POV of Díriel and spans from his capture (and meeting with Lóreth) to the downfall of Morgoth.
In case you're wondering... they're not a couple, but they're not not a couple either - Angband is absolutely not conductive to forming relationships, but do they end up being the light in a dark place for eachother...? yeah. And after the First Age it develops somewhat bittersweetly with Díriel returning to Valinor with the Host of the West and Lóreth going on to help found Rivendell one day... and they both feel a little unrequited longing "but after all they're not lovers so..."
(They absolutely will get together in the Fourth Age but there's a long way between now and then)
That said, while I've grown attached to the two I have doubts whether they're really conductive to the goal I actually want to achieve here, so the second itineration of the project I'm debating on is just a one shot about the War of Wrath from the perspective of an anonymous thrall.
...It takes a lot from my WW2 reading and the impression I get from concentration camp memoirs (and one specific memoir in particular) when they talk about the very end of the war -- I'm not denying that some of the most horrible atrocities happened while the camps were being dismantledz but on the other hand there is often this sense of who's winning the war being an open secret and this chaos beyond enemy lines and... it's not eucatastrophe because terrible things are still happening but it causes similar feelings in me and it's fascinating to read about.
(I hope it's not disrespectful per se to have something so awful inspire your fantasy writing, but on the other hand all fantasy is inspired by irl history, and it's not like this isn't my own national heritage so...)

Sharing Hermitcraft with the Person I Love
Growing up, I never really thought about the person that I would potentially spend the rest of my life with; how our separate interests would interact and coexist. And probably, it was because I didn't think I'd meet someone with those interests or someone who would accept me for who I am. So that just never really crossed my mind, until I met my partner.
Ever since the middle of high school and into college, I always felt my interests were a little 'childish', not necessarily because they were specifically made for children, but rather that it wasn't the 'standard, main-stream' things to like. One of those interest that have been with me for a long time and is very dear to me is the Minecraft SMP server Hermitcraft. As someone who grew up with series like Minecrack and watching some veterans of the Minecraft YouTube space (SethBling, Ethoslab, GenerikB, etc), when I was introduced to Hermitcraft back in Season 2, it was something that I truly felt like I was missing before then. I had seen Minecrack, The Cube, and many other servers rise and fall over my time watching Minecraft content, but no server had ever felt so special to me and, obviously, so many others.
As such, I was hesitant to share Hermitcraft with my partner, who I knew was never in the Minecraft YouTube space much (but likes playing Minecraft), because I was scared. What if my partner thinks this is dumb? What if they think that I need to focus on other things? In retrospect, this is dumb. My partner loves me and supports me every second of every day, but that's beside the point.
At the start of Season 9 of Hermitcraft, I decided to introduced my partner to GeminiTay, one of the newer Hermitcraft players at the time, and started watching her episodes together at the start of the season so they could have a fresh start. And I am so happy I did. We have watched all of Gem's videos this season as they came out, and over the course of the season, we started watching more creators from Hermitcraft and that general Traffic SMP sphere together, and I cannot imagine enjoying this content without my partner at this point. From the start of Beef's development on Hermitcraft TCG to the depths of the Frost Citadel and Decked Out 2, we watched this world develop and I cannot be happier.
What really kicked off this post, however, was the release of the physical version of Hermitcraft TCG. Now, this was actually something that my partner bought for me first, as they ordered me the combo booster box and playbox they had on sale. But within the day or two after they bought a set for me, I decided to get my partner a set as well. So after months of waiting, they finally got delivered about a week ago. My package came a day before theirs, so we waited until we unboxed them together. Since we got the combo, we each received a special slabbed card with the potential for a signed card. As my partner opened theirs, they saw that they received a signed Bdubs card, and they were so shocked and surprised! They knew that I had been watching him for years, but also, he has become a favorite for them (both with the Hermitcraft series, but also Building with Bdubs), and it just made me so happy that they got someone that they knew and enjoyed (for those wondering: I got a signed foil XB card, aww yeah)!
And as we opened up the packs that came in the booster box, my partner was so excited to pull rare Gem, Cleo, and Scar cards (some of their faves) and already started thinking about making a deck with them. I cannot tell you how much happiness I felt in that moment as we shared our mutual love for this silly Minecraft SMP and the people that contribute to it. We joked that we initially were only going to get a single set, but getting one for each of us was so incredibly worth it. Heck, my partner even said, "Well, now we have cards for Hermits to sign if we meet!"
Now, is there really a point to this post? Not really, more so just wanted to both put my experience into perspective for myself, but also to thank all those creators in the Hermitcraft/Traffic SMP sphere for creating a space where sharing my interest of the server not only helped me grow closer with my partner, but also spawned a new fan at the same time! Sorry for the rambling!

but. like. what if ep 1 Daniel thought they were going to meet Karen.
it makes sense, you know? Sean is a slightly better liar with him than with everyone else, but that bar is still six feet under (at least in ep 1, I think he gets a little better later on) and Daniel knows something is off. he knows Esteban is supposedly off doing something, something important enough the brothers have to make their way through the wilderness and that fucking gas station on their own. obviously his first thought isn't going to be that Esteban is dead, that's ridiculous (right?) so it's clear that Esteban must be involved in something important, mysterious. and what's more important or mysterious than the outline his mom has left in their lives?
and he knows that Mom liked trips, adventures, so it makes sense that she wouldn't want to meet them in boring old Seattle. so Dad has to go get her wherever she is, maybe ease her back out of isolation, while the brothers go to meet up with them. and they're keeping it a secret from Daniel, maybe for a surprise like the Playbox, maybe because they're worried it'll fall through and he'll be disappointed. it'd make sense, especially with how on edge Sean is whenever they talk about where Dad is, Daniel knows how tense Sean always is around any Mom-related conversation, how he maybe doesn't think she'll show, so Daniel doesn't tell Sean what he's figured out, doesn't want to tick him off even more.
he just keeps his thoughts to himself, imagining what his Mom will look like, how beautiful she'll be, how happy she'll be to see them after all these years, the fun things they'll do together, how maybe Mom can help look after Mushroom because of Dad's allergies, how Mom and Dad will go back to that station and show that awful old man what's what. Daniel dances with Sean and thinks about what it'll be like to dance with their parents, both their parents. and when Sean says they have to talk about something Daniel gets a little worried, sure this is probably just Sean admitting they're going to see Mom, but what if she isn't coming after all, especially if Sean called Lyla and Daniel glimpsed him talking on the phone through the window, he'd think that maybe it's Dad calling to say it got called off and Mom doesn't want to see them at all.
so Daniel asks for a soda to stall, only to regret it as soon as Sean's out of earshot (except for screaming, but Daniel doesn't know that yet), he wants to get it over with if it's bad news and if it's good he doesn't want to have to wait anymore. now he needs a distraction and the Hawt Dawg Man episode is long since over, so he just grabs the remote and starts idly clicking through channels, not really paying attention to what he's looking at, just a bunch of boring grownup stuff.
and then he lands on the news.

I know people like rolling dice and you know what, i think it can be fun! i think random shit can be fun. it makes you think on your feet about the directions narrative can go, and it keeps you from falling into habits or ruts. that's great.
but these crunchy wargames aren't roleplaying, dude! that's not the idealized image that gets newcomers to the hobby excited. even if they're shy about roleplaying, they prbably heard about d&d online or in some show and it is depicted as something that looks fun. it's like a party where you make pretend and get to do some light video gamey dice shit because it's an easily digestible way to make abstract the ideas of uncertainty and tension.
i love the idealized magical ignorant image of d&d. it's this endless and exciting playbox where people feel like they finally get to play pretend without getting called a stupid faggot or hating themself. obviously d&d fucking sucks, but so many of the alternatives that get offered fucking suck too! i want to make a game that just rides the love of being with people and getting carried away together. tell a weird fucking story, be really into your ideas, play out your characters even if they're silly and you're shit at acting

What a wild time.
For those who are caught up: Chapter 4 is here.
For those finding this for the first time, start here!
Special shoutout, again to @lordichamo for creating Survive!Mine and making such a fun playbox for us to play in, and thanks to everyone who either helped me brainstorm or whatever while I got this done.
Time to rest. And then, probably find something else to stick my feet into.
