Life is Strange - What if Esteban hadn't died? - Part II

Sean goes to the garage to check on his dad, who is beneath the car, fixing it. ─ How's it going? ─ It's going fine, son. What about you? ─ I'm… I don't know. ─ Do you need to talk? ─ No… I mean… nevermind. ─ Whenever you need to talk, just reach me out, son. I understand you might be going through a difficult phase. I get you, I've been there too. ─ Dad, come on… I'm not a kid. ─ Okay… since you're there, could you please give me the wrench? ─ Which one? ─ The 16th millimeter one. ─ Okay, let me find it. Sean looks everywhere. He finally finds the wrench and hands it over to his dad. ─ Gracias, hijo. ─ Dad, don't you think you need to rest? ─ Well, maybe… I miss spending some time outside with my amazing hijos. You know, it's been a long time since we went to the woods. Sean stays silent for a few seconds. ─ Ehm, dad, are you hungry? ─ Kinda. ─ Follow me. ─ Okay, Sean… They go upstairs. Esteban goes to the bathroom to wash his hands while Daniel and Sean put the pizza on the table and grab the plates and forks. Their dad comes back.

─ Wow… it seems we are having pizza for dinner today. W-w-wait… where did you get it from? ─ I actually bought it. ─ With the 40 dollars I had given you? ─ Yes. It was Daniel's idea by the way. ─ You didn't need to… ─ Come on, Mr. Diaz! ─ Let's eat, I'm hungry! Sean laughs. ─ You're always hungry, Daniel! They all sit and eat the pizza. Sean looks at his father. He wants to suggest something. ─ Chef Diaz… ehm… why don't we go camping? Tomorrow is Saturday after all. ─ Hm… lemme see… what do you think, Daniel? ─ I don't like camping… the forest is cold. ─ Ugh, come on Daniel! ─ Sean complains. ─ I know the forest might be a scary, cold, and dirty place ─ Esteban comments. But it gives me a relaxing sensation. ─ But dad, it's so late! ─ Daniel complains. ─ Can you stop being so annoying, Daniel? ─ Hey, Sean, be patient with your little bro! Besides, he is right. Let's go there tomorrow. But I want you to get up earlier and prepare everything so we can enjoy every second of our "little trip". ─ Yeah, dad… we will. They finish eating. Esteban goes outside while Sean goes to his bedroom. ─ I can expect dad to become very chatty tomorrow during our trip ─ Sean laughs quietly. Daniel opens the door suddenly. He scares Sean a little with his zombie mask. ─ Woah!!! DO NOT ENTER MY ROOM WITHOUT… ─ I scared you, didn't I? Daniel laughs. ─ You didn't scare me… well, maybe… maybe for one second. ─ What are you doing? ─ Nothing. I was just thinking about life. ─ About Jenn, you mean? ─ No! I mean… it doesn't matter. I need some privacy right now, Daniel, so leave me alone, please. ─ But… what did you think about my mask? I did it myself. ─ It's cool. Now leave me alone. ─ Are you sad because you didn't go to that party? ─ No. I stayed with you and my dad. You're my priority. You two and my best friend Lyla. ─ Well, I'll leave you alone. But… can I ask you something first? Sean sighs. ─ What do you want? ─ A hug. Sean sighs again and hugs Daniel. ─ I love you, Sean. ─ Me too, Daniel. ─ Even though you're annoying sometimes… and a bad big brother. ─ And you're an annoying little brother. Now get out of here! Daniel leaves Sean's bedroom and goes to the living room. Esteban is watching a movie. ─ Dad, wanna play now? Sean expelled me from his room. And I feel lonely now. ─ Alright, son. Esteban turns the PlayBox on and holds the joystick. ─ Daniel, look, I know you're too young to understand it, but Sean sometimes needs some time alone. He's going through a hard phase in his life. You'll go through it in a few years too. ─ He used to be funnier in the past. Now he's become annoying. Esteban laughs. ─ Teenagers. You'll never understand them. The next day, in the morning, Daniel and Sean put everything they will need for the trip in the car. Sean and his dad are super excited.

Okay so I'm not usually one to take issue with these sorts of things, but wtf is Max going to be the main character of Double Exposure? She already has a bff & girlfriend in CHLOE who she was off having trips with (via easter egg in LiS2). I hope this is supposed to be an alternate branch within the LiS multiverse, given that Max doesn't at all mention or reference Chloe as she's talking about this game's bff. Instead of her being THE Max with some bullshit like her and Chloe going their separate ways or even pulling back on Chloe lives to have her dead.

I was excited to see "Life is Strange", but got it drained down by it being Max. To be clear not because I have an issue with Max, I like Max; but rather the details & implications surrounding her returning. If this game is Bay over Bae then fuck this game; and honestly fuck the Safi romance that will be part of it. I'll focus on Lost Records instead.

Should just be fully new character or confirmed AU Max with a new power set and new bff (to romance ofc) >.>

I’ve tried to make a dsmp lis AU before:

C!Dream was Mr. Jefferson, c!Tubbo is Chloe, c!Tommy is Rachel, c!Ranboo is Max, and c!Wil can be Frank, then you can change the context of a bunch of stuff to make it Not Gross i.e. C!Wil was more a brother figure who gave c!Tommy, troubled foster kid, a home away from home. Still a drug dealer though, etc.

this is very real actually i can see the vision. mine was like uhh. okay mine is a bit complicated it’s like. so the roles are like dream is still jefferson, quackity is max, wilbur is chloe, tommy is rachel, phil is chloe’s mom, techno is the weird cop guy, and tubbo is chloe’s dad. except obviously i have to change 10000 things. so quackity and wilbur weren’t like ultra close besties but they were toxic closeish freaks. and tubbo is obviously not wilbur’s father but his little brother who phil gave his truck and then crashed and died. badly. and after tubbo dies and quackity leaves, wilbur meets tommy who becomes his new little brother figure/toxic bestie. also techno isn’t like a uhh cop and is obviously not dating phil he’s just like. a close friend of the family who wilbur beefs with bc he thinks phil likes him better and also techno hides wilbur’s drugs to annoy him/badly try to help him. but anyway my au doesn’t work bc wilbur and quackity are not fucking chloe and max. oh also warren is like sapnap and karl both btw.

Worth noting in my au that if you saved Nathan from Jefferson, then he would've lived and got a redemption in the save Chloe ending.

I'm tempted to say he could've been in the Brody role in LIS 2, since he kind of fits Brody, cause Brody's line about his family having money but no soul would fit a Nathan after surviving the storm.

Ok, truth to be told I haven't started LIS2, but I did finish the TColors. Because I really can't deal with the angst between siblings and I saw some people commented that there was really no "happy" ending in LIS2 (I mean I already broke down in TColors, I don't think I'll be able to handle LIS2). Therefore, I don't think I'd be playing LIS2 anytime soon. But I'll take your word for it after everything that has happened to him he'd probably be the type of person to have no care about the value of money since that has always been the root of him being an outcast in Blackwell. I want to believe that if he survived he'll probably be in jail but I also want him to find at least seek solidarity through therapy. And probably seek out Victoria (and the others as well) to apologize, I just love their relationship so much like a brother-sister dynamic. As much as I hate to admit I want to see a painful scene where Victoria finds out that he was part of Jeffershit's crimes from being manipulated, and it's just up to Victoria whether she forgives him or not. (I hope I'm not that awkward, this is like, my first time interacting with anyone on this app T^T)

This also holds true if they have Chloe die from Covid or somesuch. Because in a Bae ending, Chloe gets to live knowing she was someone else's first choice, even when it was in the face of a truly terrifying Storm that was going to destroy their hometown. Whether Chloe lives one month, one year, or one decade, that is still more time she lives, being loved and supported, than in the Bay Ending.

What does the Bay Ending get us? Chloe dying, abandoned by Max Caulfield, bleeding to death in a school bathroom shot by the man who had drugged her with a date rape drug, feeling abandoned by anyone and everyone who ever pretended to care for her... and she would in fact be correct.

Further, three years later Nathan gets out of jail when his conviction is overturned in court. David is planning on hunting Nathan down and murdering him, and undoubtedly ends up caught by the cops because I do not trust Joyce not to be telling the Prescotts everything in exchange for a little financial reward (or at the very least not being found an accessory when David's plot inevitably falls apart) so it's not even like it matters.

A rich white man who murders Chloe gets out of jail and his record expunged. That also holds true for Rachel's death as somehow Nathan escapes responsibility for that - again, he's getting out of jail after three years, and I'd not be surprised if Jefferson likewise was able to get out of jail on appeal for the same reason (being a well-to-do attractive white man). (This is shown in LiS2 if you saved Arcadia Bay. David is grousing to Joyce about it on the phone.)

So. A town full of people (most of whom were not home on a Friday at noontime seeing Arcadia Bay has a depressed economy and people are seen leaving town to find or go to work) survives. Yay. Most of those people don't know Chloe or give any shits about her and probably even welcome Nathan's release from jail because the Prescott Family is offering construction work and buying out people's homes while planning on creating a gated community. If the Prescott Family gets its way, in under a decade there wouldn't be an Arcadia Bay, it would be Prescottville or somesuch. Oh, and a bunch of rich mostly white kids from outside of Arcadia Bay attending a private school also survive. None of those really care about Chloe either.

I would rather save Chloe, however long she lives, than let her die feeling (rightfully) abandoned by the world. I would love every moment Max and Chloe had together for however long they lived. And if they break up? They break up. If Chloe dies? We all die eventually. That doesn't lessen the absolute love that Max shows to Chloe in that moment on the cliff by choosing her, being the first person to choose her in at least six months and probably longer seeing Rachel was busy cheating on Chloe and that doesn't sound like choosing Chloe no matter what Amberprice fans way wish.

And in my AUs, Chloe lives. She lives for many many years with Max by her side. They have their ups. They have their downs. I don't need to see an unwanted sequel to offer new Max romances to bury Chloe for once and for all.

IF Max and Chloe are broken up in this new game, I really disagree with the idea that “we sacrificed the town for nothing.”

Chloe’s existence, and whether or not it should be allowed by the universe, shouldn’t be dependent on if she’s in a romantic relationship with Max or not. In my opinion, the reason saving Chloe is important is because it’s looking at a flawed person and saying “Despite your flaws you are worthy to live. You are special enough to someone that the weight of your life surpasses that of the town.” It’s also important because it’s Max deciding that fate cannot hold her in chains and she has the choice write her own destiny.

And, I think the idea that you might as well sacrifice Chloe if Pricefield isn’t at the end, also devalues how complex love is. Even if you aren’t dating someone they can still be invaluable to you. Romantic love isn’t the only love that’s “valid” enough to sacrifice a town for, and even if Max and Chloe didn’t work out, that doesn’t mean Max’s decision was wrong, because she still saved her childhood best friend.

Anyway this was just a little rant I did on my phone so sorry if it’s not as coherent as usual. I’m also not making digs at anyone who’s disappointed at the idea that they may have broken up because honestly I’m not happy about it either. I just don’t agree with the idea of “Well there’s no point in letting Chloe live if she’s not in a romantic relationship with Max,” because I feel like it kind of devalues Chloe as a person and what the final choice represents in terms of having freedom from fate.

Life is Strange 2 - What if Esteban didn't die? - Chapter 1

Esteban gets between his sons and the police officer, who holds a gun in his direction.

─ Are you really going to shoot at me? For no reason? Please, please listen to us first. I want to know what happened. Let's calm down.

The police officer puts the gun down.

─ Okay.

Esteban looks at Sean.

─ What did you do to Brett? Please tell me the truth.

─ Daniel accidentally spilled zombie blood onto his shirt. But this is all that's happened. But this motherfucker thinks it was on purpose.

─ This is a lie! He did it on purpose! This dumb and stupid little kid!

─ Hey, don't say that about my little bro!

Sean almost beats Brett, but Esteban holds him.

─ Don't do it, son. It'll make things worse for us.

Sean calms down.

─ You all, please go home! I have more important matters to care about ─ the police officer orders.

Brett shows his middle finger at Sean and Daniel. Sean does the same and hugs his brother tightly.

─ Are you okay, Daniel? He didn't hurt you, did he?

The police officer looks at Esteban with a mad face.

─ What could I expect from two kids raised by a Mexican dad? That's why we can't let you immigrants take over America, or else violence will spread! You will never be welcome in this country! Sincerely, I hope a decent president takes over and builds a wall to keep those assholes away.

He goes back into his car and drives it away. Esteban is still bothered by what he's just heard but tries not to show it. They all get inside.

─ So... I think papito here needs to get back to work. And please, don't get into any more trouble. Things aren't easy for immigrants like me in this country.

Sean goes towards him.

─ Dad, wait...

Esteban looks at him.

─ I... I just wanted to say... please don't get bothered by what that stupid police officer said to you. You are a good dad and both me and Daniel love you.

─ I know it, son...

He, still sad, goes back to repairing the car he was working on. He doesn't want his children to see him unhappy. Sean is worried about him and talks to Daniel.

─ Daniel, I think dad is sad about what happened.

─ Yeah... what if we... bought a pizza for him?

─ I don't think that would do much to cheer him up, but we could try. He had given me some money for the party, but... I think spending that money buying something for him would be worth it.

─ But... won't you go to the party tonight, Sean?

─ Nah... I'm okay. I prefer staying with my family, especially after almost losing my dad.

─ Did you see that guy point a gun at him?

─ Yeah... By the way, I have to get back to my bedroom. Lyla is waiting for me on Skype. See you later, Daniel, and DO NOT enter my room!

Sean goes back to his room and resumes the call with Lyla.

─ Why did you leave out of a sudden?

─ You won't believe it, shit happened.

─ What shit?

─ Long story. By the way, I wanna say that I'm not going to the party tonight. I wanna spend some time with my dad.

─ Wow, how did you change your mind so fast? You never cared that much about him.

─ I know, but...

─ What about Jenn? Weren't you excited to see her at the party?

─ Yeah, I was, but... there'll be other opportunities for that in the future.

─ I wouldn't be so sure of that. But, if that's your decision... by the way, I'm also not going to the party tonight. At least not without you. It would be boring to go there without you.

─ I see... so, talk to you later?

─ Yep. I'm still very confused. You were super excited for the party.

─ I know... bye, see you later.

─ Bye, Sean! I like you so much... I mean... as a friend... anyway, never mind.

She immediately turns off the call. Sean gets up and looks for his sketchbook and a pencil. He sits on his bed and starts drawing a forest. In the drawing, he is sitting on a rock beside his dad and brother near a river. His imagination goes wild, and he gets lost in his thoughts. He feels as if he were there.

Okay, this is gonna be a little brain break from writing my LIS 2 apoc AU.

Reasons Why I'm Writing A Zombie AU for LIS 2:

They're constantly on the run, and trying to leave the country. Perfect setup to throw some zombies in.

It's Halloween.

Daniel dressed as a zombie and made fake zombie blood.

Sean drew zombies on the day of Episode 1.

Many zombies references throughout gameplay (such as when Chris asked Sean to draw for him).

EDIT: The Last of Us reference with the mushrooms and Sean making a clicker noise after Daniel references clickers.

Probably more but I literally just found out Sean drew zombies in his sketchbook on Oct 28th. 💀

I'd really love to talk more about it but I don't wanna spoil my ideas.

Ngl, would be kinda cool to imagine an idea of lis2 sifu AU, okay, lets think, the main characters I not even need to say who will be, do I?, this yang, his our main characters big brother...sooo It all points to sean(but its kinda weird taking in consideration we also have a "sean" in the game, tho sean doesn't look like neither of them, tho "I tired of this shit"(this a dialogue of this sean(sifu)) is a very sean(lis2 sean) thing to say😒, and the older version of this yang doesn't combine with the older version of sean(that could be him from bb I guess?), It doesn't need to be coherent to the original characters, lets pretend sean being this yang so It makes more sense with Daniel.

the vengeance, like, Daniel would be avenging who? Because in the logic of the game, the main characters are avenging their father's death, so Daniel would be avenging...Esteban?😒(spongebob hawaiian cocktail playing in background), sorry!! I just don't like esteban(I respect him as sean and daniel's father, but I don't care about him), I mean this one kind makes sense, the problem is that I DON'T LIKE ESTEBAN💦(and the visual gets me too, our main characters father is an old man, I mean esteban is an old man too, but our main characters father looks like a grandpa and Esteban looks like "a daddy😩👌"or dilf(I don't like much this word), tho playing the opening again ngl I found the old man kinda good looking, he's an old man of respect, I prefer the old man than Esteban😒)

this fajar, this one is easy, for me super combine to be the gangster/short dude that got fucked up both in bb and lw(cuz I feel this dude have a tension with daniel, the same way our main characters have a tension with this fajar because he is the one that killed them, so they have this fear, but also this hate/rage towards him), actually all the three First bosses could be portrayed by the gang members If you want, the short dude would be this fajar, the big bald dude this sean and the girl could be this kuroki, this one makes sense cuz those are characters I could Cleary see daniel messing with, its just funny cuz they are very random

okay, but if you want some important characters, this fajar for me super combines this dude, this sean unfortunaly idk, this kuroki if you want It could be lyla😒, one of the things that make lyla combine with this kuroki for me, its that both of them combine with the word "bitch", I feeling kinda bad to associate this kuroki with this word 😅but it kinda combines with her, but ofc way more to lyla, ugh, I don't like this girl)

the old lady I mean this jinfeng, tsc, its very obvious who combine to be, lisbeth!, even the way our main characters kill this jinfeng is exactly alike the way Daniel kills lisbeth and I never notice that, I mean I founded similar when I saw it, but its more similar than I thought(i always thought that our main characters killed this jinfeng by choking her, but playing again and again now I see that they actually break/crack her neck, thats what kills her, which exactly what daniel's do when he kills lisbeth, and both deaths/scenes are kinda creppy, our main characters is a cool creppy, daniel's to me its a bad creppy(I have a trauma with this scene/episode 4 in general💦), but I will accept for the sake of coherence😓

(jokes asides, what makes lyla have something in common with this kuroki is that both have some sadness/mental problem(like depression!? idk what this kuroki have, but she has/had something and lisbeth and this jinfeng are both very gredy old ladies)

Decknine seems to have a chip on their shoulder against Pricefield to the point that they even tried to rewrite Dontnod's happy end for the two with the changing of the LiS2-Bae picture (though by doing that further opening the door to dismiss/ignore this game as nothing more than an AU branch within the multiverse while DontNod's is the true canon). They don't care about the characters, the relationship, the LGBT+, or anything else but trying to cash grab + disrespect Dontnod as much as possible in the process. At this point I think someone at DontNod accidentally scratched a Decknine person's car or something to justify shitting on their legacy like this.

I actually think that in this case player choice was REMOVED cause the break up isn't an option; there is no "fight for your relationship" prompt. Decknine just stole it from players and said "fuck your choice and who you choose Max to be with. Here's another (no chemistry lipstick lesbian Chloe knockoff that's more appealing to mainstream and men trash ass) LGBT+ romance option that we prefer instead.". Like this isn't that hard, Bioware has been doing it since 201x's via Liara/FemShep across the ME series and even DAO and Inquisition with Warden/Leliana. Or they could've just side stepped the entire thing via having a new protag, have Max as a side character helping the new protag out as they learn their powers and have their romance as Max's story could then be more easily "vague-ified" to allow both Bay or Bae details to be put in; while also still having Max as nostalgia bait.

remember how in 2015-2016 nearly ALL wlw ships on screen ended with the bury your gays trope? there was a huge backlash against that and it sparked conversations about why representation mattered which is one reason why in 2024 it's normal to have queer stories of all kinds that aren't just the BYG trope.

so when the first LIS game came out in 2015 it gave players the choice to subvert that trope (even if it wasn't perfect) and that was significant. it really mattered! and going forward the LIS franchise has always tried to be inclusive of queer characters and themes which is great.

i don't have a stake in this fandom any more but it feels very dismissive and out of touch to deny max and chloe a hopeful ending after all they went through especially when LIS1 gave us that possibility. their story mattered to so many queer fans. it was canon. why mess with that memory?

maybe player choice and agency at all costs isn't actually great game design. this is especially true for characters like max that aren't blank self inserts that players can project their personality onto. she's her own character with her own history and motives (like in the first game).

i think it's also a mistake to try and please everyone and try to appeal to the biggest possible audience. it's also telling that they chose this specific segment of the audience and fans (who they think are a minority) to throw under the bus, and then say that don't worry, max can have other romances in DE so it's still queer! kinda missing the point when these characters have become emblematic and they represented something.

but breaking up with your gf is REALISTIC! a poor excuse in a game where time travel and alternative timelines and universes exist. it just points to a failure of imagination. there's really no world where max and chloe could be happy together? really?? not one? maybe don't write a multiverse story then because this is terrible.
