Plant of the Day
Sunday 3 December 2023
Asparagus officinalis is a long-term crop, with plants lasting up to 20 years; they need a sheltered site with free-draining soil. The plants are either male or female with male plants produce larger spears, so many modern cultivars are all-male. These male and female plants produced lovely autumn colour before they are cut back for winter and mulched.

bathtime for some of my cats! i'm very happy that despite having this particular bean for well over a decade they've barely, if at all, yellowed ;w;

Smilax shoot season!! I cooked these with just butter and garlic (and s+p ofc) and they’re like if asparagus was… better. Not as bitter or tough as asparagus. Yum!

Have you ever tried an Asparagus Pea (Tetragonolobus purpurea)?
This is a relative of peas rather than asparagus. The species is grown all over tropical Southeast Asia and is thought to have come from New Guinea originally. This plant is a novelty crop in western gardens but it has great potential to become a more economically important plant. For example, all parts of the plant are edible (with proper cooking), the seeds can be used in a similar way to soybeans, and it can be processed into feed for domestic animals. It’s very easy to grow in the UK.
We weren’t too impressed with the stringy pods and astringent taste of the pods but we may have not used the optimal cooking style.

For people who love the feel of ferns but live in a drier area and/or have a hard time keeping them alive: Might I suggest Asparagus?
Tumblr media
This is actual asparagus, the stuff you buy in stalks at the store, not the “Asparagus Fern” plant. The tip of the plant in summer and fall looks like wisps of tall, fine green ferns. And they are SO SOFT!
I had to cut a sprig and bring it in for me to play with. I’m also going to try drying it and seeing how it does.
