I finally drew this, this concept has been in my head for months! I’m really happy with how this came out and want to rant about it:

Her armor in the first panel is supposed to be similar to the fist version of Nya’s samurai armor from s1. And Pixal’s kinda using it for training

In the next few panels is her armor slowly being built and added, with her skirt? belt, and shoulder armor coming in later

Assorted Ninjago sketches I've been doing in my free time to get a feel for my versions of the characters ♥️💙🖤🤍💚

Lloyd would be a messy eater. Food on his clothes, hair, all over the table, on the floor, everywhere.

Nya is the type to choke things down her throat without swallowing. She likes eating, but it’s too time consuming, so she just takes one huge bite of the whole thing and swallows.

Jay is the type to wanna watch something whilst eating. He sets the food on his lap, turns on the TV or goes onto youtube, and just watches whatever as he munches.

Kai is a fast eater. Not on purpose or anything, he just eats unusually fast. Leaves zero mess too.

Cole hates leaving any food on his plate. Like, he’s not gonna waste it, and theres only a bit left, so he might as well painstakingly eat the last bits for the sake of satisfaction of a clean plate.

Wu doesn’t eat (he doesn’t need to as often). He drinks tea.

Zane doesn’t need to eat. But he likes to. He guilt trips Wu into eating with the “poor, lonely, slow eater” Zane.

Bonus:

Morro casually forgets to eat, so Wu always had to call him down to eat at specific times with a meal in hand. After he left, he would always feel hungry at a specific time three times a day and could not rest until he had something to eat.

Skylor likes the cooking part more than the eating part, mainly because she’s never satisfied with eating her own food, but someone needs to test them to make sure they’re good for the shop. She does like soup though.

Pixal became the chosen one for Skylor when she shared how she wished to try eating more unique foods.

Bechdel Testing Ninjago

So, a little while ago I did the Bechdel test on Ninjago because I've always seen the show as sort of an interesting case study in how women are portrayed in cartoons. Of course, I'm aware the Bechdel test originated as a joke and something passing the Bechdel test doesn't make it feminist/not. Rather, or for me at least, it's an indication of how deficient female representation can be at an aggregate scale. As a way to analyze Ninjago, I feel it works as it shows how female representation over the course of the show. If you're interested I'll now discuss my thoughts on how the analysis went season by season. DISCLAIMER: I did this for fun.

The pilot was easy. Nya's the only one, so test failed across the board. The first episode that passed the test was when Jay's parents came to visit. Yay Edna! Mystake does show up in episode 7 but, I don't count it as she has not yet been named. 12&13 had a kid's mom in a bus which I decided was enough cus hey, Mom's a name she uses.

Here's where we really get going. Patty Keys, their real estate agent continues to show up through seabound as a background character, which is pretty cool imo. Episode 5, Mystake finally gets named. Episode 6 was huge for my chart as it's the introduction of Misako. You'd think episode 7 is when her and Nya talked but that's actually when Nya and Gayle had a lil convo. From then on I spent the episodes just staring at the Nya and Misako thinking "talk to her talk to her talk to her." Fortunately, when they did speak, Nya and Misako would be discuss like science, maps, and fate of the world so I never ran into a problem with rule 3. That is, until Rebooted.

The good news is Pixal's here so it'll be years before we fail rule 1 again. The bad news is we've got a love triangle so goodbye rule 3. Nya actually talked to her student, Sally, and Pixal quite often but it was so often about Jay or Cole so I would just be scouring the episode for a single exchange where they talked about anything else. During the Tournament, Nya, Pixal, Skylor, and Misako were all in different groupings and it was rare that Tox or Camille would say something so no rule 2/3 successes until late season.

The good news is, the love triangle is over so we're back to rule 2 usually meaning rule 3. The bad news is, Pixal's in Zane's head so we're back to hoping Misako and Nya say something to eachother. Nya usually shared her scenes with Wu, Ronin, and Jay during these seasons so chances were few and far between. However, unlike the first few seasons where the default was male, we're now getting some female henchmen (Bansha and Dogshank) so that made things easier.

Thank you for being in Day of the Departed Edna Walker. Early Hands of Time was tough because Nya, Misako, and Commander Macchia were rarely in the same scenes. In the latter half of the season though, we thankfully see the return of Pixal. Maya also helped us with some wins.

What a breath of fresh air. Thanks to Harumi & Ultraviolet's introduction, Pixal's return, Mystake's upgrade to a reoccuring character, and Nya & Misako's continued support, failing even rule 3 is pretty rare during the Oni Trilogy. We run into some complications during Hunted because though we have Skylor and the aforementioned characters in Ninjago and Faith & Jet Jack in the First Realm, sometimes people don't talk to eachother. And that's ok. Overall, smooth sailing.

Ah??!? What happened. Worry not. I realized this was, in part, because the Oni Trilogy had 20 minutes worth of chances for women to speak to eachother, these were only 10 minute episodes. So, for the sake of comparable units of analysis, I considered each pair of episodes to be 1 episode. I'll show both charts until DR.

It looks a little better, but it's still not at Oni Trilogy levels. Still, I'd be curious to see what the test would look like if I dissected the earlier episodes into 10 minute chunks because it's probably not a great sign if 10 v 20 minutes makes such a big difference. Ok, proceeding. The Fire Chapter was usually pretty successful because Pixal, Aspheera, or Nya would usually end up talking at one point or another. Gayle even helped at one point. The Ice chapter usually achieved successes through Nya talking to Sorla. In one episode, I counted the Preminent's roars as conversation with Pixal. The Ice Chapter had quite a few failures largely because, as in previous seasons, all the women were split up.

Despite the fact that Nya was one of the longest lived ninja, Prime Empire has total failures at levels not seen since before season 2. This is largely because for the most part, Pixal and Nya are never in the same episode. Racer 7 helps but she was only there for a bit. I should point out that I feel like the 10 minute era is really when Pixal starts feeling like part of the team to me. She's always part of homebase meetings and always plays a key part in missions. Alas, if she's not in episodes with Nya, that's not going to show up on my chart. It's a reminder of the fact this test doesn't show substance.

Master of the Mountain is similar to the other seasons of its era. The fact the 10 minute era tended to show its plots episode by episode (ex: Ep 3 = Plot A, Ep 4 = Plot B, Ep 5 = Plot C) rather than all in one really takes a toll on the test. For the most part, Nya and Vania were our only chances for success and it was rare they'd share an episode. We also had the rare rule 3 failure with the Queen of the Munce episode. Thanks Jay. The Island only had Nya until they found Misako, so it was struggling even more.

It feels right to see all green when it's a Nya season. In the beginning of Seabound, they put Nya, Pixal, and Maya on a boat together and by jove it made things easy. Late season was a bit trickier because Nya was on her own journey. Crystalized had Skylor, Pixal and some ressurected villains saving the day. Late Crystalized is the way it is because it had so, so many different groupings. I have a chart based on groupings and this season was such a challenge.

I really felt the difference with Dragons Rising. I mean, you can see the difference, but it was even more clear when doing my data collection because it was just so easy. Rather than grabbing at scraps of dialogue like I had to do in early seasons, there was often a wealth of more meaningful conversation between female characters to choose from. As with the Oni Trilogy, a female villain with a female henchman makes things easy because they scheme together. We also had Nya and Sora on a joint quest. Funnily enough, there is a rare rule 3 failure because Sora and Kreel only talked about Kreel's friend in one episode. Episode 17 had the classic split up issue and actually would've failed entirely if not for Agent Underwood, which is actually a great example of my next point. You can really tell how male is no longer the default because not only is there the introduction of all the fantastic new female main characters, but also there's plenty of random female characters scattered throughout. I haven't seen DRS2P2 yet but I expect it'll be more of the same. I should mention I also made a chart with the reverse (two named men in an episode who talk about eachother about something besides a woman). Only three episodes fail in any capacity. (Say thank you to the Akita, Pixal, and Harumi solo episodes). If you read this whole thing, thank you. I had a lot of fun doing it. Let me know if there's any other charts I can do!

Ninjago - Elemental Ninjas (+ Pixal) Reacting to Your Outfit in Prime Empire

Jay

With the help of one of the many "Jays," you eventually ended up in Jay's club

When he appeared on stage, he immediately noticed you

"Y/N!!!"

He leapt off the stage and ran over to you, stopping a few feet away so that he could look you over

"AAAH you look so cool!!!! And I thought my outfit was nice! Gah, I wish I had thought of something like that!"

You laughed, assuring him that his outfit was also very stylish

He ignored you, walking around you in a circle and fangirling over every little detail

You literally had to tell him to stop, he would not be quiet about how good your outfit was

Cole

You were looking yourself over, pretty satisfied with your choices of clothing

You noticed that you weren't the only one staring at your outfit

Cole was standing a little ways away

He was watching you intently, almost gaping at you

You felt your face heat up a little

Your satisfaction with your choices was suddenly waning

Feeling a little insecure, you asked:

"What?"

Cole just smiled, meeting your eyes with his own, filled with admiration

"Nothing. Just thinking of how lucky I am. And how good-lookin' you are."

You snorted, smiling back at him with your confidence restored

Kai

The first thing you heard when you stepped out into the open with your new outfit was a whistle

Worried for a second that it was some stranger being a creep, you whirled around ready to slap someone

But it was just Kai, watching you with his arms crossed as he leaned against a wall

"Nice threads."

You breathed a sigh of relief, making your way over to him to give him a light punch on the arm

He laughed, wrapping an arm around your shoulders

"No, seriously. You look super cool."

"Not so bad yourself."

He smirked, pressing a kiss to your cheek

Zane

Zane isn't really one for appearances; he doesn't really care what people look like

But he can still recognize when someone looks nice

Like you, when you emerged in your in-game outfit

You approached him with a proud grin on your face

You looked great, and it made him happy that you were confident

He gave a smile in return

It was one of his sweet, genuine smiles that you adored so much

He took both your hands in his as he said:

"I like your outfit. It suits you."

Lloyd

Lloyd was looking around, surveying the unfamiliar landscape

He was caught off guard when he noticed you walking towards him, wearing a rather flattering outfit

He felt his cheeks heat up instantly

He floundered when you stopped in front of him; his mind was totally blank

You raised an eyebrow, smirking as he stared

Realizing he was being rude, he fumbled to say something

"You, uh... You look nice."

He smiled awkwardly, hoping his face wasn't as red as it felt

You just chuckled, treasuring his reaction

Nya

Nya perked up as you approached her, already smiling at the mere sight of you

Her eyes widened when she noticed your outfit

She brought a hand to cup her cheek endearingly

She stared for a moment, cheeks turning rosy as she returned her gaze to your face

There was a twinkle in her eye as she said:

"Well, don't you look nice!"

She took your hand in hers as she showed you off to the others

"Guys, look at y/n! Don't they look cool?"

Pixal

Kind of like Zane, she doesn't care for appearances

She's more focused on functionality when it comes to clothing

So when you approach her in your new outfit, the first thing she does is overanalyze it

She walks around you in a circle, pointing and tugging at different parts

She's lowkey critiquing you 💀

"This will be good in allowing you to move freely. This part is too loose; it might get caught on something. You'll have to be careful."

She's doing it because she loves you, I promise

She just wants you to be as efficient and safe as you can be!

I really wish we got more onscreen time with just Borg and Pixal, because their dynamic is just so sweet and funny to me.

it basically boils down to she’s daddy’s little girl and can get everything she wants and knows it. As well of course that they definitely are the type to spend their weekends hanging out and inventing while catching up on how they’ve been after the previous catastrophe of the week.

Who do you think is supplying her with the materials and equipment she needs to build vehicles for everyone or defences for the monastery?

Think about crystallised and the way she just asked him to help with their illegal operation to steal a highly protected weapon right after Kai said that it would be basically impossible to just call him. Literally one “Mr. Borg we need your assistance” from her and it was a done deal. Like the moment I heard it I immediately just translated it into “Dad, pretty please can we do this very illegal thing with your help.”

I’m gonna say it, the man probably spoils her every moment he can, probably always giving her the latest prototype of whatever he has invented, and dedicates a portion of his earnings into a “Pixal fund”, which is specifically dedicated to helping the ninja with whatever they need because she asked.

No, Pixal does not know it exists she just assumes that it’s a company expense. ( the expense probably listed as “stuff bought so villain of the week won’t destroy our HQ, and all of Ninjago, your welcome”)

Also you know the ninja are taking advantage her connections so hard.

Jay and Nya would beg her to get their hands on any prototype she has received so they can take it apart and study it (would you have me believe that that wouldn’t be an immediate date night?) granted Jay would probably do this more than Nya and would instead just be presenting to her what Pixal gave him and then suggest they take it apart.

Kai would pester her for the latest Borg phone or Borg watch because he needs to be up to date or will die (despite his distaste for new tech in season three he definitely grew a phone addiction and later fell down a hole he can’t dig himself out of)

Cole would ask about any new games in development to be the first to sign up for game testing (that is if Jay didn’t already do it first)

Lloyd probably actually respects the boundaries that would come with having a friend who has a tech genius and rich dad and wouldn’t bother her about it. At most he’d ask for a new car or bike because he crashed the last one. (Thriving with the Lloyd is a barely passable driver and anything he does is up to luck headcanon, there is also a betting pool for how long it takes for him to crash the next thing. Kai is a scary accurate winner)

and Zane…gonna be honest he’s probably just setting up family lunches between himself, Borg and Pixal. You can’t tell me the minute Pixal expressed feelings for Zane that Borg didn’t try his best to make him part of the family.

tangent aside I wish we had more scenes with the two interacting because the show being what it is there is very rare chance to depict a father daughter relationship. I also think Pixal getting whatever she wants without question is funny. I mean it’s not like she abuses that power or anything.

AHHHHHH THIS WAS SO FUN TO PARTAKE IN!! Shay your fic was SO CUTE and I absolutely adored the direction it was taken in, it’s genuinely one of my favourite samurai fics now and I’ll be sure to give it lots of attention now that the artists are being revealed :)

I found the gentle talk in the monastery courtyard to be so sweet and I LOVED the choice of giving them connection through stars which is exactly why I HAD to draw that scene ✨🩵

Many hours were put into this peice and my drawing tablet’s limits were DEFINITELY being tested. there was a few times it completely crashed and I lost a lot progress 🥲 BUT ALAS!! I pulled through!! :D

FRIENDS, IT'S HERE!!! Fanart of @sapphireshineonao3 fanfic, Contract. I DEVOURED it pretty fast since it was one of the few Kinich fanfics out there at the time. The last chapter says Kinich has some residual Abyssal energy concentrated in his eye, and I fell in love with that idea. here's the interaction that made me sit up like a puppy who saw a ball: " “Ugh… you idiot…” Ajaw scowled, “Sanka the shithead decided to really test the markings I put on you and shot some abyssal energy into your fucking eye. The barrier managed to keep the worst of the effects at bay but it got through regardless. The Traveler managed to cleanse your energy but it looks like it’ll scar.” 

“Scar…?” 

“Here.” Ajaw grabbed a mirror and tossed it to Kinich. 

Kinich took the mirror and looked, and saw his left eye had an unusual purple tinge to it among the green, yellow, and orange. The purple formed a crescent like shape around his pupil. 

“This is from abyssal energy?” 

“Yeah, like I said, the traveler managed to cleanse most of it, you won’t be stuck with it rotting away at your insides at least.” Ajaw said with a frown. " Ok, can I tell you a secret? The hardest part of this art was not getting the screenshot of that room in the Weary Inn, it wasn't the rendering, it was not the pose, it was not the eye - IT WAS AJAW. PIXAL ART - not my strong suit. I hope you like it anyways!

Ninjago Headcanons (Dates/Outings)

(Ninjago Character and the Kinda of Date or Outing they'd take you on)

These can be seen as romantic or Plantonic

Lloyd

Lloyd would take you to an amusement park for a date or outing. Considering how much pressure he's under as the leader of the group. He'd want to take the person he cares about most, somewhere fun. A place where they could be a kid again, and enjoy the company of each other. You guys would probably snack on fair food, ride rides, and play the fun little booth games. If you showed an interest in one of the prizes at any of those booths? Lloyd's definitely going to win it for you, no questions asked.

Cole

Cole would take you to a Dessert Cafe or shop. Probably one you'd find out he frequents often. He probably knows all the employees, bosses, and owners by name. Heck, they probably have a dessert named after him. The shop would have a little cozy corner for you two to sit at. To enjoy some sweets and drink tea. Soft music is playing from the speakers. The shop smells heavenly from the sweets and sugar. Cole would show you all his favorites and recommendations (Spoiler it's half the menu) He'd also mentally takes note of which ones you enjoyed the most and, plans on getting you the ones on days he stops in.

Jay

Jay would take you to an Arcade. You two would dominate the scoreboard for all the two-player games. Then have a friendly competition on all the one-player games. With all your tickets combined, you'd end up walking away with the biggest prize. A huge plushie that would take both of you to, carry inside the Monastery. Jay would insist you keep it, just as long as you name it after him.

Zane

Zane would take you ice skating specifically on a pond he's frozen and tested himself. Simply because he likes the idea that it'd be just you and him. He finds it to be a more personal experience. If you're not as confident as him at skating. He'd hold you're hand until you were more comfortable. He'd catch you before you fall as well. He'd be more than happy to teach you how to skate as well. Getting cold? One hug from Zane and you'll be good to go. Being a Nindroid I'm sure he has a built-in heating system. He'd keep you warm all the way to the Monastery and once inside. He'd make you some hot cocoa or tea, even soup if you wanted.

Kai

Kai would take you hiking. It's not a strenuous hike, one that's laid back. With plenty of nice spots to rest, or take pictures of. You spot any pretty flowers you like? Kai's taking off into the underbrush to get them for you. He'd pop back into view with a handful of flowers. The hiking trail would end at a little lagoon, a nice place to cool off and have a picnic. On you're way back if you start feeling tired. Kai probably doesn't mind carrying you the rest of the way. Either piggyback or princess style whichever you wanted.

Nya

Nya would take you to the beach. A day full of fun in the sun. Building sand castles, eating ice cream, splashing around in the water. Collecting sea shells and making them into matching necklaces or bracelets. A friendly match of beach volleyball. The day ending with both of you sitting on a beach blanket near a bonfire, roasting food on skewers while under the stars.

Pixal

Pixal would take you into town to do a little craft class. Such as painting plates or pottery. You'd both paint or decorate the item for the other. While drinking tea and enjoying a little snack. Whatever you'd made her. She loves it and it's placed in her room on display. After the class, she'd take you to the museum to look at the new exhibits together, or get ice cream and go to the park.

Skylor

Skylor would take you axe throwing. She's most likely been to this location before, to a point where she's mastered this particular skill. She'd teach you and show you the ropes. Afterward, she'd take you back to her place and cook you both a meal. Even teaching you the recipes and letting you cook with her if you wanted to.
