Ty Lee becoming a kyoshi warrior made no sense to me. If anything it feels like a regression. Don't get me wrong I think she'd fit in well with them and I love suki/ty lee but realistically at the start of the season we hear Ty Lee proclaim that her trauma of growing up with six identical sisters is what drove her to the circus and it was kind of dismissed. and then we never really get any closure on this the time we see her she betrays Azula and is imprisoned and then after that the last time we see her she is part of the group in full garb after befriending them off screen.
she joined the one group where a huge recruitment is looking like everyone else. Why?
And the thing is this totally could have worked her coming to terms with her identity even tho she looks like everyone else she is still Ty Lee and she has a lot to contribute by simply being her (and also like how she taught them chi blocking) and so the idea of becoming another "faceless" girl doesn't scare her as much because she knows that to the people that matter they know who she is.
But like the way its done just feels like they needed a nice little fun way to wrap up ty lee's story but it also makes it feel like Ty Lee is incapable of standing on her own, if its not the circus its azula and mai if not them the kyoshi warriors. She's never just on her own being Ty lee she is always playing fidde to some group.
I think it would have been better if the ending had ty lee instead of having already joined the kyoshi warriors had instead been separated from mai and anyone she knew in prison and had had to for the first time get by on her own merits as a person not what she could do for other people. (a bit like what Suki does in Suki alone) and then a little moment between her and Suki where they reconcile Ty Lee tells her how she wants to help rebuild the word after the devastation of the fire nation and Suki's like "it's not exactly rebuilding the word but maybe you can teach me and my girls that chi blocking you do, it's impressive." and Ty lee could smile and agree. Not exactly an invitation to join but a way for her to carve out her own niche and make a mark in a safe space. It could also tie into the chi blockers that we see in LoK of Ty lee decides she likes teaching and decides to teach more non-benders how to protect themselves since the Kyoshi Warriors is pretty sacred and has traditions that not everybody can adhere too.
I just think making her a kyoshi warrior came out of nowhere and not that ut couldn't work at all but it would have needed more time to breathe. I would say have Suki introduce the fact that the kyoshi warriors are going to stay as Zuko's security detail for a while and Ty Lee's knowledge of the palace and Chi blocking skills would be an amazing hep to them so she starts of working with them and maybe int he comiucs we can see that she joined them (but I doubt they had decided this little plot line when the series actually ended)
#Ty Lee desrved a little better not gonna lie#Like I know she wasnt a major character so they weren't going to devote that much time to her ending#but i think they could have left it a little more opened ended with her and kyoshi warriors#Honestly I think they should have left a lot of stuff more open ended.#But I can see why they didn't do that they didn't think they would come back to the world at least not the same story#I dont know why there wasnt any confirmation of the chi blocking used by Amon's followers being a skill ty lee pioneered#it would have just been a quick throw away line#But i think the idea of her opening a school like Toph's metal bending one or even just how Kyoshi started the warriors program would be fu#ty lee#ty lee atla#ty lee avatar#ozai's angels#atla azula#azul ashengrotto#princess azula#avatar the last airbender#atla#atla meta#atla headcanons#atla comics#atla confessions#atla suki#suki#suki atla#the beach episode#kyoshi warriors#atla analysis#atla thoughts#atla the promise

How did Pioneer's night with Truro lead to him coupling up with Pilot?
This is a really good question! Sorry it took over two weeks to answer, lol. DJ's here now, so we'll be slowly picking back up where we left off (hopefully)! For clarification, this is a question about the human AU, and refers to events that take place in the short story Just One of Those Things.
I've classified Pioneer's early service life as akin to that of a sheltered child actor. Even though he was "born" an adult, he was constantly under supervision from not only his railroad, but the company who manufactured him, film crews, and the general public at large. He was extremely visible but constantly busy and often not "working" in the traditional sense. His service life, therefore, was actually quite lonely when it came to socializing with other engines. Most engines are built knowing very little and are taught the general etiquette of the yard by other, more experienced engines and learn social cues by osmosis. In contrast, Pioneer was taught etiquette by men in suits who trotted him out for publicity stunts and tours, and rarely had time to just... be a normal guy.
As you might imagine, this made socializing with others sometimes difficult. Pioneer comes off as overeducated to engines who didn't learn their manners out of a handbook, and he's not confident in his flirting skills as a result. He had at least one fling in his youth with M-10000 (later City of Salina), but due to both their circumstances it never amounted to more than a handful of encounters out of the public eye before Salina was scrapped. Even then, because Pioneer is the way that he is, he let Salina take the lead and dictate the pace and terms of their relationship. Once Salina was gone, he once again found himself without the time or motivation to seek out any kind of romantic relationships. And as far as he was concerned, that was fine! His service life was already so solitary that he figured that the once was enough. He had the experience, he liked it, but now it was over. The along came his pen pal.
Pilot is... distracting at times, but Pilot is also not out here asserting himself the way Salina did. Pioneer is also aware that Pilot is dealing with some unresolved(?) feelings about his B unit. Even if Pioneer likes Pilot (and he does, a lot!) he thinks it would be untoward to make any advances considering Pilot himself has chosen not to pursue any relationships since being preserved. He's happy enough getting to write letters, and if More isn't in the cards, he's fine with that.
It could have gone on like that forever were it not for Truro, the absolute hero. Truro, unlike Pioneer, had an almost crushingly mundane service life until that one time he went really really fast. His publicity was handled completely differently to Pioneer's - much more hands-off - and as a result he's just as socially adept as Pioneer, without all the baggage surrounding his romantic pursuits, since he was allowed a freedom that Pioneer never had. Yes, he's a little bit of a flirt, but that's not really why meeting him was important for Pioneer.
It's not just that they hit it off at a party and had a nice romantic evening, it's also that Truro brought Pioneer around to his way of thinking about preservation and relationships. Pioneer is - and always has been, to a degree - burdened by the idea that he is still that sheltered, highly supervised public face. Truro's argument is that preservation is service, yes, but that with preservation comes a degree of freedom. His suggestion that Pioneer should lead their dance, that he shouldn't be ashamed to talk about the things he's interested in, and that he gets to decide when he's had enough of a party and wants to leave, these all serve to show Pioneer that he's allowed to dictate the terms of his preservation, and that letting another engine know you're interested in them can be fun and exciting. Truro's a good teacher, but Pioneer is a fast learner.
And, yeah, it's also that Pioneer realized kissing is actually very fun and having more of that in his life with an engine he really likes sounds like a good time. But it's not *only* about that!
#asks#solrika#pioneer zephyr#silver pilot#city of truro#the future is still silver and black#thank you for your patience. now back to your regularly scheduled programming!

Chen anon. Thinking about like Chens opinions of all the ninja like obviously lloyd, the worst got them a fail on a group project & didn’t even remember him? UGH. Kai, second worst offender for being the lamest teacher and now dating his older sister. Awful that he went from hating tech & to making chirps like “ofc im at the hospital my hair is SICK”. Nya, unfortunately points docked for being lloyd AND Kai’s sister. Otherwise was okay. Zane, also very lame and had the most boring class. Plus he makes the worse noodles out of the 2 of them. Cole, embarrassing. Jay, definitely not cool but the least lame for telling lots of stories in class and knowing stuff about starfarer. The best teacher but that’s not saying much. Didn’t have to learn things with him

For my college senior project I wrote a simple 2d sidescroller.
I didn't use an engine.
It was all just raw DirectX calls in straight-up plain C++ code. I was deep down the rabbit hole, up to my elbows in manually defining hitbox coordinates and managing texture memory and manually flipping the draw surface buffer. And that was before I even got to implementing, you know, gameplay. I learned so much about the inner-most workings of video games, and you're 100% right.
The only reason they get made with all the bells and whistles we take for granted today is because the makers can stand on the shoulders of giants. They can get on with making a cool magic system or whatever, because somebody has already handled making physics work. Even when they're not directly using existing code, they can take inspiration from what's been done and improve on it. The games of the past walked so that the games of today could run.
And the folks who programmed games way back in the early days when there was no such thing as an engine? When they were manually interfacing with hardware? When they had to make every precious drop of memory count? I had just the smallest shadow of a taste of what they had to deal with, and that was enough to nearly break me.
Nothing but the utmost respect to those guys. Here's to all the people who ever have, currently do, and ever will push the boundaries of what games are capable of.
the fact that any video game ever gets made is a fucking miracle, let alone good ones.
#programming#video games#jurassic park trespasser was a bad game but it pioneered the idea of physics engines that half life 2 built upon#pokemon red and blue fit into 373 kilobytes

ELON MUSK'S GRAND PLAN FOR TWITTER
Buy it for billions of dollars
Be so surrounded by crypto and NFT shills and yes men that you start to see Twitter's ordinary users as the real bots
Scrap the site's pre-existing bot programs bc you were mad a report showed that the site didn't have as much of a bot problem as you thought
Make impersonation trivial, and let everyone who pays you $5 have all their tweets boosted no matter what
Make the site a barely functional husk run by a skeleton crew and reduce moderation in the name of free speech
Have your site flooded with bots, impersonators, and spam
???
Make them pay you $1 as a effort to fix spam, even though most of them already paid $5 for the checkmark that incentivized them to spam
Genius. The real Tony Stark. A pioneer on par with the Wright brothers and Zefram Cochrane. Where do I sign up for my One-Way Ticket to Mars NFT

so many holocaust movies are voyeuristic endeavors that sensationalize the most extreme suffering but in such a manner that the real horror is not conveyed. zone of interest is a very well produced break from this that shows none of these scenes which weve unfortuately seen a million times now, but focuses on the unnerving atmosphere of a nazi family living an idyllic life right outside of auschwitz. the sound design is sinister and genuinely disturbing, im a bit confused at reviews that come to the conclusion that the holocaust is merely “being reduced to background noise” because the “background noise” in question is kind of the basis of the entire movie. very interesting and had a lot of historically accurate aspects that arent usually included in holocaust movies. corporate cooperation with nazis and major companies role in the holocaust, lebensraum and the nazis settler aspirations in the east, and the appeal fascism had for germans seeking upward mobility and an increased standard of living, and how this was actualized through theft of jewish wealth and property and through nazi leisure programs. its a disquieting mediation on the mentality of perpetrators, complicity, abstraction. since the center of this movie is the extreme cognitive dissonance it takes for this family, self described pioneers of the east, to live in a villa next to a concentration camp, i see why it hasnt gone over with the zionist crowd

Xerces Society: Announcing The State Of The Bees Initiative: Our Plan To Study Every Wild Bee Species In The U.S.
This is really exciting news! For those unaware, the Xerces Society has been focusing on invertebrate conservation for over fifty years, and has pioneered a lot of the work to bring awareness to the devastating losses of not only insects but other terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates. It gets its name from the Xerces blue butterfly (Glaucopsyche xerces), the first North American butterfly driven to extinction by human activities.
Even if you haven't heard of the Xerces Society, you've probably come across various "Save the Bees!" campaigns. These frequently focus on the domesticated European honey bee (Apis mellifera), which, while it may be important to crop pollination in many parts of the world, is not a part of natural ecosystems in places like the Americas and Australia, and can be considered an invasive species at times. With the rise of colony collapse disorder (CCD) particularly after the turn of the 21st century, where entire domestic honeybee colonies would die off, the need to preserve bees began to gain wider public acknowledgement.
But what many people don't realize is that it is the thousands upon thousands of other native bee species worldwide that are in greater danger of extinction. They don't have armies of beekeepers giving them safe places to live and treating them for diseases and parasites. More importantly, where honey bees may visit a wide variety of plants, native bees often have a much narrower series of species they visit, and they are quite vulnerable to habitat loss. Most bees are not as social as honey bees and live solitary lives, unseen by the casual observer.
Invertebrates in general often suffer from a lack of conservation information, meaning that particularly vulnerable species may fly under the radar and risk going extinct without anyone realizing until it's too late. This ambitious program by the Xerces Society aims to solve that problem, at least for the 3,600+ species of bee in the United States. If they can assign a conservation status to each one, then that strengthens the argument toward protecting their wild habitats and working to increase their numbers. Hopefully it will also prompt more attention to other under-studied species that are in danger of going extinct simply because we don't know enough about them.

China hacked Verizon, AT&T and Lumen using the FBI’s backdoor
On OCTOBER 23 at 7PM, I'll be in DECATUR, presenting my novel THE BEZZLE at EAGLE EYE BOOKS.
State-affiliated Chinese hackers penetrated AT&T, Verizon, Lumen and others; they entered their networks and spent months intercepting US traffic – from individuals, firms, government officials, etc – and they did it all without having to exploit any code vulnerabilities. Instead, they used the back door that the FBI requires every carrier to furnish:
https://www.wsj.com/tech/cybersecurity/u-s-wiretap-systems-targeted-in-china-linked-hack-327fc63b?st=C5ywbp&reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink
In 1994, Bill Clinton signed CALEA into law. The Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act requires every US telecommunications network to be designed around facilitating access to law-enforcement wiretaps. Prior to CALEA, telecoms operators were often at pains to design their networks to resist infiltration and interception. Even if a telco didn't go that far, they were at the very least indifferent to the needs of law enforcement, and attuned instead to building efficient, robust networks.
Predictably, CALEA met stiff opposition from powerful telecoms companies as it worked its way through Congress, but the Clinton administration bought them off with hundreds of millions of dollars in subsidies to acquire wiretap-facilitation technologies. Immediately, a new industry sprang into being; companies that promised to help the carriers hack themselves, punching back doors into their networks. The pioneers of this dirty business were overwhelmingly founded by ex-Israeli signals intelligence personnel, though they often poached senior American military and intelligence officials to serve as the face of their operations and liase with their former colleagues in law enforcement and intelligence.
Telcos weren't the only opponents of CALEA, of course. Security experts – those who weren't hoping to cash in on government pork, anyways – warned that there was no way to make a back door that was only useful to the "good guys" but would keep the "bad guys" out.
These experts were – then as now – dismissed as neurotic worriers who simultaneously failed to understand the need to facilitate mass surveillance in order to keep the nation safe, and who lacked appropriate faith in American ingenuity. If we can put a man on the moon, surely we can build a security system that selectively fails when a cop needs it to, but stands up to every crook, bully, corporate snoop and foreign government. In other words: "We have faith in you! NERD HARDER!"
NERD HARDER! has been the answer ever since CALEA – and related Clinton-era initiatives, like the failed Clipper Chip program, which would have put a spy chip in every computer, and, eventually, every phone and gadget:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clipper_chip
America may have invented NERD HARDER! but plenty of other countries have taken up the cause. The all-time champion is former Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, who, when informed that the laws of mathematics dictate that it is impossible to make an encryption scheme that only protects good secrets and not bad ones, replied, "The laws of mathematics are very commendable, but the only law that applies in Australia is the law of Australia":
https://www.zdnet.com/article/the-laws-of-australia-will-trump-the-laws-of-mathematics-turnbull/
CALEA forced a redesign of the foundational, physical layer of the internet. Thankfully, encryption at the protocol layer – in the programs we use – partially counters this deliberately introduced brittleness in the security of all our communications. CALEA can be used to intercept your communications, but mostly what an attacker gets is "metadata" ("so-and-so sent a message of X bytes to such and such") because the data is scrambled and they can't unscramble it, because cryptography actually works, unlike back doors. Of course, that's why governments in the EU, the US, the UK and all over the world are still trying to ban working encryption, insisting that the back doors they'll install will only let the good guys in:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/03/05/theyre-still-trying-to-ban-cryptography/
Any back door can be exploited by your adversaries. The Chinese sponsored hacking group know as Salt Typhoon intercepted the communications of hundreds of millions of American residents, businesses, and institutions. From that position, they could do NSA-style metadata-analysis, malware injection, and interception of unencrypted traffic. And they didn't have to hack anything, because the US government insists that all networking gear ship pre-hacked so that cops can get into it.
This isn't even the first time that CALEA back doors have been exploited by a hostile foreign power as a matter of geopolitical skullduggery. In 2004-2005, Greece's telecommunications were under mass surveillance by US spy agencies who wiretapped Greek officials, all the way up to the Prime Minister, in order to mess with the Greek Olympic bid:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_wiretapping_case_2004%E2%80%9305
This is a wild story in so many ways. For one thing, CALEA isn't law in Greece! You can totally sell working, secure networking gear in Greece, and in many other countries around the world where they have not passed a stupid CALEA-style law. However the US telecoms market is so fucking huge that all the manufacturers build CALEA back doors into their gear, no matter where it's destined for. So the US has effectively exported this deliberate insecurity to the whole planet – and used it to screw around with Olympic bids, the most penny-ante bullshit imaginable.
Now Chinese-sponsored hackers with cool names like "Salt Typhoon" are traipsing around inside US telecoms infrastructure, using the back doors the FBI insisted would be safe.
Tor Books as just published two new, free LITTLE BROTHER stories: VIGILANT, about creepy surveillance in distance education; and SPILL, about oil pipelines and indigenous landback.
