Eeeeee thanks for tagging me I love these sorts of games :)
favourite color: im really liking dark iridescent turquoise atm. Also pastel pinks of all shades
how long on tumblr: I think it’s coming up on 2 years soon
place I want to travel to: literally everywhere. But more specifically Corfu, Kyoto, New Zealand, Paris (going there soon) Ireland, Edinburgh, Cologne, Amsterdam, Chongqing, New Orleans, Leon, Rio de Janeiro and Tennessee and I wanna go back to Milan, Cinque terre and Brittany.
fave clothing brand: I don’t buy any new clothes except for underwear, but I will say that 80s-90s Cindy dresses are something I always check for. For shoes it’s new rocks. I have a pair and always on the lookout for more. But I don’t shop by brands only by what I think is good quality. Can’t be picky when you’re thrifting
fave singer/band: Hozier
phone lockscreen: purple star shaped glitter idk it’s fun and cute and I haven’t got round to changing it in a few months now
current fandom/interest: I am unfortunately back on my peaky blinders bullshit
relationship status: perpetually single and kinda ok with it. I don’t think I’m missing out on much. I don’t really meet a whole lot of new people because I work mostly alone at my jobs. My new one at a stadium is starting soon tho so maybe I’ll meet people there.
dream job: I don’t have a dream job as such but if i could I’d be a freelance artist selling handmade clothing and accessories. More realistically I’m going to university to study art conservation and hopefully go into that or maybe academic research. If all goes to shit I’m training to be a 999 operator
favorite social media besides tumblr: Pinterest defo. I’ve been there for almost 9 years
pets?: 1 black and white cat named Jasper but he lives with my mum so I don’t see him very much. I really want a pair of pigeons but at the moment my dad says no. I might be getting an African grey parrot passed down to me within the next few years because we have some very elderly friends with one who have bequeathed us custody of theirs and his name is Victor.
tea or coffee: I like iced coffee but I’m not a big fan of hot drinks. I quite like some caramel milk tea like you get in bubble tea places. But I never have the bubbles just the tea
Fave ice cream flavour: coconut gelato. Not coconut ice cream it has to be gelato. I’ve not had it since I went to Italy and it pains me daily. I tried a gelato place in the uk but it wasn’t the same.
Tags are open to anyone cuz I lack brainpower after answering those questions lol

Prix D’ami’s heart is beating next to the heart of Amsterdam – The Amsterdam’s Central Station
Tumblr media
Have you ever been to Amsterdam? Than you must have at least once gone through its heart! And if you are a regular coffeeshop visitor, you may already know that Coffeeshop Prix D’Ami, the gem of Amsterdam and the largest coffee shop in the world is located within just 2 minutes walking distance from the Central Station and right near Amsterdam’s most visited museums and attractions.
The Amsterdam Central Station which proudly wears its nickname “Heart of Amsterdam”! It geographically and literally is the heart of the city, and it connects it with quite a few different parts of the continent.
Roughly 250,000 people go through the Amsterdam Central Station on a daily basis, making it the biggest public transport transfer spot in the city which is both, successfully serving tourists that are visiting Amsterdam, as well as its locals.
Here you will find the final stops of several lines of city trams and buses, as well as waterfront stations of city ferry lines which transfer cars and passengers to Amsterdam North (Amsterdam Noord).
Unfortunately, if you are driving to Amsterdam Central Station, you should probably know that you won’t find an easy access Station, nor accessible parking. The only access by car is from the Ij-zijde where you may only stop to drop off passengers and luggage. Taxis and city buses have a better way of reaching the station and will most likely bring you closer. The Meeting Point is located directly at the Central Station main entry, outside the station hall.
And if you are a tourist, it would be of a great help for you to know that this is where the main Amsterdam Tourist Office is based, as well as departure quays for the tourist boats cruising around the city canals. In front of the station Main Entry, the main Amsterdam Tourist Office is located in a traditional wooden white Dutch coffee house. It opens every day from 9 am until 5 pm, on Sundays from 9 am until 4 pm! But it is closed on 25 Dec, though on January 1 it opens at 10 am.
For tourists who have to wait until their check in time in hotels or transportation comes, there is an option to leave their luggage at the the station luggage lockers which are open 24/7. There is also a cheaper option for travelers on a budget – an independent Amsterdam luggage storage 5 minutes walk from the station.
And don’t you worry about getting lost or misinformed! You will find Information desks at the entry and great number of vending machines, some of which even sell train tickets to other stations in the Netherlands.
What makes the Amsterdam Central Station, one of the best ones in the world is the fact that is completely accessible for handicapped people. It is also an open shopping centre and most shops open at 7 am. You will also be able to find a GWK Travelex Change offices here.
Also, you don’t need to worry that you will be bored while waiting for your train! You may take your time to enjoy several different cafés and fast food restaurants.
And this would be yet another great reason for you to visit the beautiful city of Amsterdam!

New Amsterdam Chapter 82
Yuri was careful not to crush the flimsy coffee cup in her hands as she glanced nervously out of the corner of her eyes around the small, secluded shop. She kept her dark hat low over her head, and to all outward appearances she was just another caffeine addict willing the fumes to work while the drink cooled enough to be safely ingested. No one looked twice at her.
She knew; she was watching everyone. Anyone could be someone waiting for her, listening to the conversation—anyone could be a mole. Still, this was a public place well known for first meetings, specifically among those on dating apps. She thought—hoped—that if anyone saw her nervousness they’d just assume she was waiting for the person on the other end of an app to show—or not.
Maybe this hadn’t been the best idea, but she hadn’t known what else to do. No one, literally no one at the precinct had any kind of sympathy for the street children at all. What her coworker said was what they all believed; as long as a child was getting clothes, food, and going to school the child was well. It didn’t matter what kind of personal Hell the child was in as long as those three boxes were ticked. The worst part was that, from everything she could figure, the other precincts thought the same way. Something had to be done, and she was running short on ideas.
“Hey,” a voice said, startling her. Yuri lurched to her feet reaching, automatically, for the gun she wasn’t currently carrying. The young man behind her threw his hands into the air. “I didn’t mean to startle you,” he said softly. She glanced wildly around the small shop, wondering if she’d gotten some unnecessary attention. “Come on,” he said with a gesture towards the door. “Why don’t we go to the park?”
The park was better. She hadn’t already made a scene there. She nodded and followed him out of the cafe.
There was a little known spot on the top of a shallow bluff, hidden between two trees. Someone knew about it, since there was a bench there. No one had been there in quite some time, as evidenced by the layer of debris on the stone bench. She quickly brushed it off before sitting. The young man sat next to her. “Why did you want to see me?” he asked.
She took a deep breath. In all honesty, he wasn’t her first choice. Her first choice had been the reporter responsible for the piece on Runaways Unite—but that person obviously wasn’t the man working the desk in the Bugle and she hadn’t been able to find out more information about him. However, the kind young woman at the front desk had pointed her towards this reporter. Eddie Brock.
She reached into her bag and pulled out the file she’d compiled before handing it to him. She was silent for a moment, wishing she hadn’t left her coffee behind, while he skimmed the information. She heard him gasp. “I know,” she said. She swallowed. “I—I tried,” she stammered out, “to handle it inside. No one cares. Not children’s services, not Internal Affairs—no one.”
Eddie was silent for a moment. She could hear the pages turning in the folder. She wanted to look up, to gauge his expression—but she was afraid. She didn’t think he’d gotten a good look at her yet, and she didn’t want him to be able to find her again. “I can see why you wanted to do this privately,” Eddie commented. His voice was calm, almost clinical. “It’s a long way from investigating your coworkers to contacting a reporter.”
“This is wrong,” Yuri insisted softly, careful that her voice didn’t carry. She wasn’t an idiot; she knew what would happen to her if news of this got out. Especially if it got to her coworkers.
“Why me?”
That—was an unexpected question. “I read the piece,” Yuri said softly. “About Runaways Unite. I spoke to the girl at the desk, said I had more information about the street children. She sent me to you.”
“Alright.” Startled by the tone of voice, she looked up and saw the vicious, smug satisfaction on the young man’s face as he stared at the folder in front of him. “Don’t worry,” he told her. “This will be everywhere.” He strode off, taking the folder with him, whistling a merry tune.
Yuri waited. She didn’t want to risk anyone connecting her to him. Also—she was worried. His attitude said he didn’t care, wasn’t concerned for the children at all. He just wanted a fat, juicy story to shock his readers with. That wasn’t the kind of person who’d written the Runaways Unite article; reading that one she had felt the sense of shock and horror that the author had felt in discovery.
Perhaps—perhaps this was for the best. Perhaps what Eddie was going to write would create a public outcry that would lead to change. Or, perhaps it would just rip the city apart as people chose sides and created factions that warred with one another despite all attempts to unify it.
“Dear God,” she prayed out loud, “Did I do the right thing?”
“Well,” a voice above her said, “it’s too late for regrets now.” Yuri jumped up and looked up—to stare at the winged young woman in the tree, lazily kicking one foot as the dappled sunlight glinted off her pink leotard. The young woman looked—thoughtful. She jumped down and looked up at Yuri—who realized with a sense of shock that the girl was shorter. “I’m glad to see you’ve got brains and a spine,” she commented.
Yuri stared at the slightly ethereal girl. “Are you—are you a messenger from God?” she asked, a little in awe.
The girl laughed. “Me? Oh, no. I’m no messenger. A hunter, perhaps, but no messenger.” The girl scowled. “And not a very good hunter, either,” she muttered. “Hey, you wouldn't happen to have seen a red-headed girl about yea high, would you?” she asked holding a hand out slightly above her head. “Pretty in a next-door-neighbor kind of way, panicked?” Yuri shook her head and the girl let out a low hum. “What about a girl about yea high,” she measured a height about her own, “pale, black hair, snobby, haughty attitude?” Again Yuri shook her head. “Pity. Well, keep your gun handy. Things are about to get interesting and that usually means blood. Rubber bullets mind,” the girl added firmly. “Well, upward and onward.” She pushed off the ground, spread her wings, and took the air.
Yuri stared in shock and awe. The girl, despite acting like a girl, seemed almost—unreal somehow. Yuri didn’t think it was just the wings, there were mutants with wings, after all. She turned and headed back towards her apartment to arm up.
After all, she didn’t really believe it was a coincidence that she was talking to God and the girl responded.

Past and Present, the Book Ends of Life
Part 3
Summary: Your first date.
Warning: sex
Sitting, at a high top he took a pull on his beer. This was his first honest date, in well ages. He hoped he wouldn’t screw things up.
“Can I join you?” A soft voice broke into his thoughts.
Startled, he smiled. “Hello, Y/N.” He slid, off his chair. He took a final pull from his beer.
You giggled lightly. “So you caught, my name?”
He smiled. “Of course, I did after noticing your smile.” He liked the pink hue your cheeks took. “Shall we?” He gestured towards the doors.
“Yes.”
*****
Inhaling deeply, the rich curry filled air filled his nose. A waiter soon escorted the two of you to a cozy corner.
“This is nice.” He remarked nervously.
“Yes, it is.” You aggreed, smiling you tucked hair behind your ear.
He looked over at the buffet and then skimmed the menu. The eggs and cheese were long gone. He didn’t think he could wait for a meal to be made. “I choose the buffet, how about you?”
You smiled. “Sounds good to me.” You said leaning in smiling. “I am starving.” You admit.
“Me too.”
You both share a giggle. When the waiter, comes over you both order a drink.
“So Renton huh?”
He shrugged. “Yeah one of the various things my friends call me.”
You smiled. “I like Mark.”
“Great.”
“Here you go.” He said softly, as he handed you a plate before getting behind you.
“Thank you, sir.”
“You’re welcome.” While behind you, he looked you up and down. Dresses certainly look good on you, this one laid gently on your curves.
Once your plates were sufficiently filled, you went and took you seats.
“So, I need to know.” You pierced a piece of chicken. “Why are you in hotel?” You popped the piece into your mouth and began to chew. “Are you just popping in a for a quick visit?”
“My friend Simon, found me in Amsterdam. He called in on an old favor.” He shrugged. “So I closed my club for some needed renovations. And here I am.”
Your eyes grew. “You own a club?”
He nodded. “Aye, a night club.”
“That is so exciting.” In your enthusiasm, you took several bites of your dinner. He found it incredibly endearing.
“It can be.” Now, he took a few bits. “Your turn, besides being a very intriguing barista, what do you do?”
Your fingers brushed up against each other, as you both grabbed your drinks.
“Is it that obvious?” You took a sip of your drink then. “That I do other things.” You giggle.
Your giggle, was something he was really beginning to grow fond of. He nodded. “Yeah actually.”
“I’m a teacher, but things are getting moved around at the moment, so I went to work at the coffee shop.”
“Nice.” He smirked. “I always talked too much in class. But I and still like my books.”
“I always talked too much too. So,” you looked away for the first time that night but then you looked back. “How long will you be here?”
“I’m not terribly sure to be honest.”
Quietly, but not in a bad way the two of you finished up your plates.
“Would you like to take a walk, Y/N?”
“Yes, I would.”
*****
You walked side by side, your catching each other. A smile would be shared. There were things he wanted to say but were not sure. So he swallowed them down.
“‘Mark?” You turned to him then. Your eyes shone in the light in the street lamp. “I don’t know.” You pressed your lips together looked away for the second time, this evening.
His heart beat hard and fast. It was easy for him to imagine walking over to a high cliff. It was electric when he touched you. He drew your face up gently. “No regrets,” He imagined jumping off the cliff. “Let’s just see where all of this takes us.”
“Yes!” You kissed him them. It shook him. It had been ages since he kissed anyone.
“I’m sorry..I...I...”
You must have felt his surprise.
He met your lips then and he kissed you. Your lips were far softer then he would have ever expected. Your lips danced as they met. Your hand felt great as it rested on his cheek. Easily, he pulled you close wanting to feel more of you as you kissed.
A car zoomed past and whoop and cheers filled the quiet night air.
Giggling, the two of you parted your eyes meeting.
“I liked that.” He finally says as he finds his voice.
“I want more.”
“Me too.” He admitted as a knot of pleasure formed in his stomach. “We could have a drink at my room.”
“Yes.” You nodded.
******
He could barely breath as he reached into his pocket to take out his hotel key. It beeped. The red light shone. It beeped again. The red light was there almost instantly.
“Allow me.” You smoothly took it from him. Gently you blew across the security strip and then you inserted it.
It made the better sound and the green light illuminated.
“Well, there we go.” He opened the door, and soon tossed the key onto the table near the door.
Going in, you glanced. “You are rather neat.” You smiled up at him.
He shrugged. “It’s a hotel room.”
“Does that mean your flat back home is a disaster ?”
He smirked. “Maybe.” He chuckled. “Nah, I’ve never been one for huge messes.”
“Ok.” You smiled, he watched as you rocked on your heels. “Will you give me another?”
“What?”
You smiling, closing the distance your hand caressed his cheek. He put his hand over his. “Oh, I can give you one of those.”
He kissed you then. As you did so your arms wrapped then tightened around each other. Pleasure plucked his heart as he heard you make a soft sound as he deepened the kiss. You tasted far better then any dessert.
For a moment, you broke the kiss glancing around. You smiled then at him, before fluttering off.
“Coming?” You met his eyes over your shoulder.
“Yes.”
He watched as you stopped by the bed, slipped out your heels and then pulled off your dress. He shed his jacket. Tearing off his shirt, he went over to you. “You’re so lovely.” He let his hands glide over your body.
You flushed. “Thank you.”
As he kissed you, he smoothed his hands up your back. Carefully, reaching up he unhooked your bra. You let it fall to the floor by your feet. Sitting down, you pushed yourself further onto his bed. He kicked off his shoes and made quick work of his pants.
He climbed up and over you, he kissed you again. You had made him incredibly aroused but he would let you take the lead.
Your breath was hot as he dragged his lips and kissed your throat, your shoulders. You smelled so sweetly, he was growing intoxicated by it.
As he felt you pull him to you, he couldn’t suppress the sound that came from him, when his hard on still clothed in his boxers felt your warm core. As you rubbed gently against him, he groaned eager and wanting more.
“Please Mark..” your voice was tight.
“Yes.”
Moving back, he watched as you wiggled free of your panties. He freed himself finally then. As he came back then over you.
Shaking, and with a tight moan that pulled hard on him, he entered you. Your eyes met and the two of you moved. Moving, to your own beat sounds came and mingled becoming one. Your hands wherever they touched him felt so good. Passions took over, lips and tongues meeting. It had been coolish in the room, but warmth built between the two of you.
******
Out of breath and feeling incredibly good he came to lay beside you. He smiled as your soft body curled up beside him. He wrapped around an around you.
You were breathless, and pressed a kiss on his chest. “I’m so glad I gave you that piece of coffee cake.” Your eyes met and you giggled.
He giggled with you. “I am glad you did too.”
You inhaled. “I...I...”
He felt a small shift in your mood. He looked down at you. “What’s the matter?” He gently ran his hand up and down your arm.
“I am worried. You think I’m easy. I don’t know, when I saw you, I just had to get to know you.” You gushed.
He turned, he brushed some hair from your face. “I never thought that.” He drew your face up, “I told you I was thinking about you. I wanted to get to know you too.” He pressed then a soft kiss against your lips.

10 Best Day Trips from Amsterdam
Tumblr media
Best Day Trips from Amsterdam
Amsterdam is arguably one of the best cities to visit in the world and it is a great place to visit museums, art, coffee shops and culture — but there is much more to the Netherlands than Amsterdam. Within an hour from Amsterdam, you can visit the tulip fields, windmills, and even climb up sand dunes and lie on the beach and work on your tan! The Netherlands is a relatively small country, so you can get to Utrecht in 30 minutes or even Belgium in 1.5 hours since the country is relatively small. Even traveling from the northernmost city in the Netherlands (Groningen) to the southernmost point (Maastricht) takes roughly two hours. The Netherlands has an excellent system of public transportation that allows travelers to travel anywhere in the country. The trains generally run on time and are modern and comfortable. The Dutch railway company NS has a website on which you can get train schedules. Holland is the world capital of cycling! There are over 32,000 kilometers of bike paths stretching out in all directions, letting you cycle from one city to another with ease if you wish. For nearby cities like Haarlem and Leiden, it is possible to bike from Amsterdam Centraal in an hour to these cities. With this list of the top day trips from Amsterdam, you can get away from Amsterdam and explore the rest of the Netherlands.
Amsterdam Day Trips
In this list of day trips from Amsterdam, only places within a two-hour train ride from Amsterdam were included. It is possible to access all of these sights in one day by public transportation.
Recommended Amsterdam Day Trips
1. Haarlem
Tumblr media
The short train ride to Haarlem makes it an ideal day trip from Amsterdam. Haarlem is often described as a smaller, more compact version of historical Amsterdam. Haarlem is less hectic than Amsterdam and offers a more authentic experience. It is essentially a suburb of Amsterdam so it is easy to get to. In fact if the hotel prices in Amsterdam are to high for you staying in Haarlem is a good alternative. Haarlem is seen as a quieter, gentler Amsterdam – which is in fact only 15 minutes away by train. Haarlem's Christmas market is quite possibly the top Christmas market in the Netherlands. The event is centered around the city’s Grote Markt (main square). On a regular Saturday, however, the square will have local stalls offering cheese, clothing, souvenirs, and more. There is a church located right near the square and a variety of bars and cafes. Throughout your stay, be sure to enjoy a boat ride along the canals, observe the authentic windmill located directly in the city, and finish the day at Jopenkerk, a church-turned-brewery. And, trust me the beer here is way better than the beer at the T'ij brewery in Amsterdam even though that one is located in a cool windmill.   2. Tulip Fields in Lisse and Keukenhorf, Netherlands
Tumblr media
Most tourists come to the Netherlands in the springtime to view the world-famous tulip fields. Lisse is the best place to see them. Just 40 minutes by train from Amsterdam, Lisse is an easy day trip from Amsterdam. The striking colors of the flowering tulip bulbs are a typical sight in Holland during the spring. The bright red, pink and yellow colors are overwhelmingly beautiful and are a must see, or should we say, a must experience! Keukenhof is situated in Lisse, and is one of the world's largest flower gardens. The park is home to over 800 beautiful tulip and flower arrangements. There are several attractions around the gardens, including a petting zoo, art installations, restaurants, and boat trips. Tourists do tend to overcrowd this area. Therefore, it is highly recommended that you purchase fast-track tickets that include transfers. You don’t have to go to Keukenhof to see the tulips; there are plenty of tulip fields scattered all over the Lisse province that are open to the public. We suggest renting bicycles and cycling around the fields to admire them. You can also take a tulip bicycle tour with a guide to see them.   3. Zaanse Schans
Tumblr media
The Netherlands isn’t complete without mentioning the iconic Dutch windmill and wooden clogs. The Dutch are known for their windmills, and the closest one to Amsterdam is Zaanse Schans, a town dating back to the 19th century. Looking around you at the Zaanse Schans, you will see nothing but history. Take a tour of the wooden windmills and try on traditional Dutch clogs and savour some Dutch cheese. Zaanse Schans is one of the very best places to visit in the Netherlands. The Zaanse Schans takes its name from an earthen sconce, a fortification from the Eighty Years’ War (the uprising against Spanish rule). From 1961 to 1974 old buildings from all over the Zaanstreek were relocated here from all over the Netherlands. Getting to Zaanse Schans from Amsterdam by bus can be accomplished in 30 minutes from Central Station.   4. Delft
Tumblr media
In the Netherlands there is no shortage of adorable towns, however, Delft stands out as my favorite. Delft is best known for its pottery, especially Delftware pottery! There is even a factory here that produces Delftware. Delft is not only known for the pottery, but also for its beautiful churches, charming boutiques, and cozy cafes. Delft is a popular tourist destination in the Netherlands, famous for its historical connections with the reigning House of Orange-Nassau, for its blue pottery, for being home to the painter Jan Vermeer, Vermeer is buried in the Old Church. Make sure you climb the clock tower for the best view in Delft. Delft is the perfect place to visit if you'd like to see beautiful Dutch architecture without the crowds that Amsterdam attracts.   5. The Hague (Den Haag) & Scheveningen Beach
Tumblr media
The Hague is located approximately one hour train ride away from Amsterdam and is the perfect day trip destination. The city is beautifully designed and the city has a sense of calm about it, even though it is surrounded by a large amount of activity. It is a city on the western coast of the Netherlands on the North Sea. It is famous as the place where war criminals are tried but it is much more than that. Koningsdag, or King's Day, is held annually on 27 April. It is traditionally celebrated with fairs and flea markets throughout the city. On this day, the color orange predominates at a festival (which sells orange cotton candy) and has scores of informal street markets. The Hague is also home to one of the finest beaches in the Netherlands called Scheveningen Beach. This beach is one of the most popular attractions to The Hague and is particularly popular with tourists and locals alike. The white sand beach stretches for miles and includes a Ferris wheel on its pier. 6. Alkmaar Cheese Market
Tumblr media
If you are eager to experience the world-famous cheese of the Netherlands, then you should visit Alkmaar. Alkmaar, not Gouda is the cheese capital of the Netherlands, and there are many cheese-related attractions for visitors to enjoy! Every Friday from March through September, there is a cheese market, which is particularly interesting to say the least. Alkmaar has many medieval buildings that are still intact, most notably the tall tower of the Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk, where many people from Alkmaar hold their wedding ceremony. This Dutch city is 30 minutes from Amsterdam by train and has more than just cheese. Visit the Dutch Cheese Museum or the National Beer Museum, while Belgium and Germany are more well known for beer, the beer scene in the Netherlands is very healthy.     7. Rotterdam Among the most popular cities near Amsterdam, Rotterdam is one. The reason for its popularity is that it is modern and different than any other state in the country. During World War II, the whole city was destroyed by bombs and rebuilt in a totally different style. Rotterdam is home to many fine examples of modern architecture, much of it inspired by the city's waterside setting, as well as a response to the devastation of WWII.
Tumblr media
This unique city can be reached by a fast train in just 45 minutes. This allows plenty of time for exploration. The most popular sites here include the famous cube houses, the Markthall (market hall) and the Erasmus Bridge. Nevertheless, a leisurely stroll through the streets and a discovery of the city is much more enjoyable.   8. Utrecht

Utrecht is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands and has a fascinating history. This city is located only 30 minutes by train from Amsterdam and is among the most popular Amsterdam day trips. While most people think of Amsterdam when they think of the Netherlands. Utrecht is the lively, beating heart of Holland, an ancient university town built around the Dom Tower. Utrecht is known for its city center with wharf cellars along the canals housing cafes and terraces by the water. Utrecht is celebrated for its canals, which run through the center of the city. In addition to the unique design, the lower section of the canals is complemented by outdoor eating areas for restaurants during the warmer months. Besides the unique canals and restaurants, Utrecht is an amazing city to stroll around and explore. Upon exploring the city, you'll find that Utrecht is full of special places. For example, you can drink the best coffee in the city in the vibrant Voorstraat, find all your groceries in the multicultural Lombok and taste and feel the city's archaeological history at Castellum   9. Leiden
Tumblr media
Leiden is an old and historical city in the Netherlands that can be reached by train in 30 minutes from Amsterdam. It is best known for its historical significance as a university town and for its stunning old architecture dating back to the year 1575. It reminds me a lot of Leuven in Belgium or Heidelberg in Germany. It is the best place to explore museums, canals without tourists, restaurants, and coffee shops. Although Rembrandt spent much of his life in Amsterdam, he was born and raised in Leiden. In fact, he attended classes at the city’s university for some time before deciding to pursue a career as an artist. There are several tributes to Rembrandt around the city including a plaque on Weddesteeg that marks his birthplace. The Floating Christmas Market in Leiden is another favorite of Amsterdammers. This quaint market boasts more than 90 stalls that sell a variety of festive foods, warm drinks, and handcrafted items. You'll also find a floating ice rink, as well as a small stage where performances are performed round the clock. This yearly event has won multiple awards, including the “Best Christmas Market in Europe” in 2016.   10. Antwerp, Belgium
Tumblr media
Taking a day trip from Amsterdam does not necessarily mean remaining in the Netherlands. By crossing the border into Belgium, you will arrive in Antwerp in no time at all. It may seem impossible to travel from The Netherlands to Belgium in one day, but thanks to the high-speed Thalys train it is quite doable. Antwerp is an ancient center of medieval architecture and history, completely distinct from the Netherlands. Taking this day trip will provide you with a chance to explore another country, learn about a different history, and see a beautiful city nearby. The old city center is steeped in history. You will find it in ancient building-fronts on narrow streets or in the imposing Grand-Place. The Plantin-Moretus Museum is the only museum in the world to be classified as a Unesco World Heritage site. Belgian beers are world-famous, and Antwerp is an excellent place to improve your acquaintance with them. The De Koninck Antwerp City Brewery offers an ideal introduction to the world of beer. Het Pakhuis and Antwerpse Brouw Compagnie are other breweries where you can taste authentically brewed Belgian beer. One of the top-rated beer bars in the world, the Kulminator is located in Antwerp and there are a host of other good pubs.   Related Story: Amsterdam Red Light Area Bars   Read the full article

@jadielxabrego ♡ ; bunny and jadiel !!
It wasn’t often that Bunny was able to sneak away from her security detail unnoticed, but as of late, she’d gotten quite good at slipping past her extensive team of bodyguards; it wasn’t that she didn’t enjoy spending time with them (Carter), but there was so much more in life that she wanted to do aside from allow herself to be ferried back and forth from dance lessons to her family’s luxurious estate in the Leaders’ Village. Adonis had still yet to fully explain to her what it was that he did for work, but she knew that it was important, and it went without saying that her father’s job was greatly important as well. Her family’s influence in Amsterdam - and throughout the rest of the continent - was second to none, and Bunny was so gosh darn tired of being the only Deerling who wasn’t allowed to use said influence to make a difference in the world.
Getting to know Carter...he was the only werewolf she had ever met in real life, and during the time that they had spent together, Bunny had become aptly aware at the difference between the way that humans and wolves were treated. Wolves - they were the stronger, biologically superior species by far, and yet for whatever reason, they were considered second-class citizens.
It didn’t sit right with the young heiress. Not even in the slightest, and that was why she had arranged a meeting with Jadiel Abrego, the leader of a local pack in Amsterdam. Truthfully, Bunny didn’t understand much at all when it came to werewolf dynamics; the differences between alphas, betas, and omegas went right over her head. With that being said, she wanted desperately to create some sort of involvement within the werewolf community; if not for herself, then...well, for Carter. This was his world, wasn’t it? And if she wanted to get to know him better, then..
She had an awful lot of work ahead of her.
Currently, she was waiting inside of the quaint little coffee shop she had arranged for Mr. Abrego to meet her at, a fluffy, pink-feathered pen held between her lips as she looked over the equally pink and equally fluffy notepad she had set in front of her. Steaming gently alongside her stationary was a warm hot chocolate made with oat milk, as well as a fresh raspberry scone, as she waited patiently for the alpha wolf to arrive. She was both nervous and excited all at the once ; it was an honor that he had even agreed to meet with her in the first place, and she just hoped - hoped, hoped, and hoped - that he’d consider her worthy of his time.

Slow Burn
We just dance backwards into each other Trying to keep our feelings secretly covered You touch me and it’s almost like we knew That there will be history
A/N: So I’ve already done a couple of “Shawn & Alex” one-shots that people have seemed to enjoy. Therefore, I wanted to do a longer origin story. This is part 1 of ????. Let’s just say SEVERAL.
Word Count: 1903
The first time he lays eyes on her, his heart stops. It’s so cliché, he knows that, but he’ll swear for the rest of his life that this was love at first sight. Even if he didn’t understand in that moment. Even if he hadn’t the slightest clue of what this woman, this stranger, would come to mean to him. That this girl across the bar in her vintage Tom Petty t-shirt, peeling the label off of her Amstel while saying something to earn a hearty laugh from the bartender, that this girl would become his entire world. Right now, all he knows for certain is that there’s something about her that makes it impossible for him to stop staring. Maybe it’s the way her hair frames her face in wild waves, the kind that can only come from rolling out of bed late. It could be the sound of her laugh, floating all the way across the room, soft and warm. When she turns and holds his gaze, her eyes locking with his, his breath catches in his chest. He’s never seen eyes like hers, the way they’re searching his, as if seeing deeper than the surface. Nervously and with a blush crawling across his cheeks, he looks away, pretending to be busy with his phone. But he can still feel her eyes on him and he can’t resist looking up once more. She cocks one eyebrow in his direction and nods her head to the side, motioning for him to come over to her. Again, his heart stops. Why in the hell is he this worked up over some girl across the bar? Some girl he’s never even seen before? He desperately wants to play it cool, wants to have the upper hand and pretend he wasn’t gawking at her like a teenaged boy. But his feet carry him in her direction before he can stop himself and all he can keep repeating internally is not to make a fool out of himself. Be cool, be cool, be cool. When he makes it to her side, she smiles up at him from her bar stool, patting the one next to her. Her lips part and he can’t stop from considering what they’d feel like against his own. “If you’re going to keep staring at me, you might as well join me for a drink.” There’s a playful attitude in her voice, attached to an American accent. He can’t quite place it off hand, but he’d guess she’s from the North. Maybe not that far from the border, considering the way she pronounces some of her o’s. It’s not until her eyes start to widen that he realizes she’s waiting for him to speak. Why can’t he think of a single thing to say? What the hell happened to his backbone in the last five minutes?
Finally, his mouth manages to reconnect to his brain, his hand coming up to rub at his shoulder. A nervous tick he hopes she doesn’t notice. “I’m sorry, I didn’t meant to stare. I thought I recognized you.” Good save, Shawn. “Have we met before?” He settles on to the seat next to her, their knees practically touching.
“I don’t think we have,” She smiles brightly at him, “But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t know who you are.” She starts to hum Stitches and he can feel his cheeks grow even hotter. Exactly what he wants, for this beautiful girl to associate him with his fifteen-year-old self. She reads the look on his face and lets out a flustered laugh. “Oh god, was that out of line? I love that song, I swear I wasn’t being pretentious.” She looks genuinely sheepish, a pink hue advancing across her own cheeks. “I should have hummed Lost in Japan instead, way to go, Alex.” There’s a flash of vulnerability to her and it puts him at ease.
“Oh, so you’re a fan, Alex?” He says this in more of a self-satisfied tone than he intended, with an air of coltish arrogance. It’s clear that she picks up on it, but only smiles above her beer bottle before throwing back the last of it.
“You could say that I’m recently converted,” She momentarily turns her eyes to the bartender, motioning for another round. “But I’m actually here in a professional capacity. You could say that you’re my boss, in a way.” Okay, if he wasn’t intrigued already, now she’s really gotten every last bit of his attention. His eyebrow raises, waiting for further explanation. “I’m Alex Marron, Travel Operations Manager.” Shawn really doesn’t want to admit to her that he has no clue what that means. At the end of the day, as long as he makes it on stage, that’s the only part of tour he can truly be held accountable for. He lets everyone else handle the nitty gritty with their capable hands. Which, yes, he feels a little guilty for…especially now in this moment as he struggles to make sense of what she means.
“I’m going to make an asshole out of myself, so I apologize in advance, but…please explain?” His question is accompanied by a nervous laugh, the next round of beers arriving just at the right second. Grabbing his, he takes a long drink, praying it will calm his nerves.
“I’m here on behalf of the company that handles all of the logistical matters for your tour – hotels, busses, private event space, location scouting.” She licks her lips and again and he loses his train of thought for a second. “I’m just here to make sure you all get from point a to point b without any headaches. In a nutshell. Sort of assisting Cez in that way.”
He nearly coughs on his beer, the words leaving his mouth before he can stop them. “Meaning you’ll be joining us on tour the entire leg?” So he’d be seeing her every day? For the next two months? Great. Plenty of time to make a bigger fool of himself.
“And beyond. As of now, I’m contracted for all of 2019.” She clinks her beer bottle against his before tipping it back to her lips. “Now, I just need to not fuck up.” Her last statement is sighed under her breath, an anxious grain to her voice.
“I don’t know you, yet, Alex…but I think you’ll kill it.” He reaches up to give her playful, faux punch to the shoulder…and as soon as he does it, he kicks himself internally. Why not just call her slugger, too? God, for a heartthrob his game was sadly lacking. Granted, now that it’d been made clear she was essentially on his staff (he hated referring to anyone that way), it wasn’t like he could really pursue anything with her anyways. If he even had a chance to begin with, he hates to just assume as much.
“Thanks, coach.” Her laugh has this tender quality to it, the type that tells him she’s laughing with him and not at him. That this is simply the creation of their first inside joke. If only he knew then how many nights they’d spend wrapped in one another, laughing about everything and nothing at all. The feeling of her giggles vibrating through her throat and into his chest. “You know, I find hotel bars kind of depressing. Would you…want to come somewhere with me? I mean, I don’t know if you’re allowed to just – “  He cuts her off so fast that he even surprises himself.
              “Let’s go.”
He follows her through the streets of Amsterdam, hood up and sunglasses on even though the sun has long since dipped in the sky. He’s already given in to hours of photos that day and right now, he just wants to be a normal guy trying to get to know a normal girl. It appears as though the world is willing to at least grant him that simple wish and no one pays them much attention as they wind through the cobblestone streets. They make idle chatter along the way, pointing out different sights and bringing up anecdotes of their prior travels within the city. He learns quickly that Alex is nearly as well traveled as he is, except of course that she’s had the time and ability to actually experience the destinations she’s been to. He can’t stop from picturing himself in her narratives, following her eagerly as he does now. Her hair flowing behind her, smiling over her shoulder at him, the final vestiges of sunlight reflecting off of her skin. Eventually, they find their way inside of a quaint coffee shop, the combination of marijuana smoke and espresso beans filling the air. They find a table in the back and it isn’t long until they’re one shared joint and two cups of coffee in. Simultaneously loosened up and caffeine buzzed, they both talk excitedly about whatever passing thoughts occur to them. She admits she hasn’t seen all of the Harry Potter movies; he pretends to get up to leave. He admits he hasn’t heard the latest Hozier album; she pretends to choke on her coffee. They cover topics from their favorite childhood memories to their biggest high school embarrassments to the excruciating details of their first times. He learns that she’s a few years older hence being far enough along in her career to manage operations for such a large-scale tour. Although, she swears she lucked out a bit when her superior went on maternity leave and that normally she probably wouldn’t be traveling along for the length of tour but that her company was courting Island for a larger contract. She reveals that she calls Chicago home but only roots for Boston’s sports teams. He cringes outwardly at her mention of the Bruins, which earns his first ever eye roll from her (of which he’ll go on to receive thousands). There are a couple of heated disputes about pancakes versus waffles and who the best Marvel character is. Ultimately, the conversation settles between them as if they’re old friends, picking up where they left off. Somewhere between competing to see who can attract the attention of the resident cafe cat and who can make a better smoke ring, closing time approaches and they’re cast back out on to the street. It’s after one in the morning and Shawn knows he’s going to catch some flack for staying out late the night before rehearsals, especially with someone that was essentially a complete stranger. Albeit, it doesn’t feel appropriate to call her that anymore. Not now that he knows she threw up in her locker the first day of freshman year and that she lost her virginity in a Dairy Queen storeroom. There’s something about her that makes him feel oddly comfortable, peaceful even. They joke back and forth on the walk back to hotel, observing the oddities of Amsterdam in the moonlight. There are several close calls where one or both of them is nearly taken out by a bike, despite the late hour, and when they finally stumble back into the hotel his sides ache from laughing. He insists on walking her all the way to her room (he is a gentleman, after all), and when her door finally closes and cuts him off from the little smirk on her face, he doesn’t stop picturing it the rest of the night. It’s the first image in his head when he wakes the next morning and right then and there? He knows he’s fucking in for it.
Follow Up A/N: Admittedly, I don’t know a lot about what goes into tour management. However, I’ve managed leisure tour operations for a large company (you know, where they send busloads of teens around Europe or retirees to the Grand Canyon) and there’s a lot of damn work that goes into it. So I find it feasible there could be someone devoted to just those logistics on a massive concert tour. But basically don’t @me with a “Cez doesn’t need help like that” – you’re probably right. Just suspend your disbelief for me :)
ALL FEEDBACK IS SUPER DUPER APPRECIATED. Tell me what you liked, what you didn’t like, what you want to see, etc. I’ve also been VERY BAD at keeping track of who wants to be added to a taglist for my work, so please let me know if you want to be added and I’ll actually do it this time.
LAST NOTE – I know the timeline I’m setting here kind of retcons things I’ve mentioned in one or two of the one-shots. I’ll probably edit those at some point to fix that up.

Meet the Interns: Alex
Tumblr media
Things that make me happy: Post Malone, Chipotle, coffee, shopping, tattoos, the color pink, ice cream, my family, sunshine.
Why I’m here: I’m here because I want to use my own experiences and struggles to help people. After losing my right leg below the knee, I have struggled a lot with my own mental health. I find comfort and healing in supporting others. I am forever grateful for TWLOHA and it is an honor to spend my summer here.
On the weekends, you can find me: Hanging out at the beach, walking to Starbucks, watching Netflix, calling my family, writing in my journal.
We’re jamming to your playlist, what artists are we listening to? The Neighbourhood, The Maine, Post Malone, Panic! At The Disco.
If you have dibs on the TV, what are you most likely watching? BoJack Horseman, The Office, Bob’s Burgers.
If you could go on a trip anywhere, where would you go? Amsterdam.
What challenges you and takes you out of your comfort zone? Opening up and letting people support me when I’m struggling. I have a bad habit of trying to be okay all the time, especially in front of others. I’ve worked really hard this summer to be honest with the people around me and let them see my true feelings and struggles. It’s hard work, but it’s so worth it.
Favorite saying or quote to live by: “I don’t need easy, I just need possible.” – Bethany Hamilton

A Short History Of CBD
Tumblr media
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a phytocannabinoid discovered in 1940 and it marks a long and rich history!
However, humans have been cultivating cannabis since almost 4000 years BCE, as both colloquial cannabis and industrial hemp used in textiles, papers, and ropes. The mankind’s development has been circulating around cannabis, but its legal and medical uses seen today are a phenomenon of recent times!
In 1563, Portuguese physician Garcia da Orta observed that his servants who took cannabis were very happy and very hungry. Around the same time, Chinese doctor Li Shizhen documented the anti-nausea effects of cannabis. There was also a story saying that Queen Victoria used to smoke cannabis in order to ease her menstrual cramps!
However, the actual CBD history begins in 1940 when American organic chemist Roger Adams isolated the CBD compound without knowing for sure what he had isolated.
In 1960, Israeli organic chemist Raphael Mechoulam was both able to isolate and describe the chemical structure of CBD. The chemists then could confirm that CBD was a nonpsychoactive constituent of cannabis. By the mid-1970s, the British Pharmacopoeia was referring to CBD tinctures for medical use.
The medical effects of CBD were made public in America with the appearance of the Charlotte Figi’s story – a young girl’s rare seizure disorder was treated by a CBD potent treatment. And this story was quickly followed by the battle for legal CBD.
By the 1950s, CBD had been outlawed in all 50 states, but the science and medicine development brought the legality of CBD back into question.
In 2017, FDA took the first steps towards approving CBD for medical uses and today it is legal in all 50 States. Now it is well known for its ability to reduce stress and anxiety, relieve pain, promote sleep, and encourage a happier and healthier life.

The usual Comic Con post incoming, this one being the one in Ahoy Rotterdam. I went as Ladybug as that is my easier go-to outfit.
After an extremely stressful way there (no miracle I have a headache), I arrived at Comic Con safely and for the first time ever I spent money within the first ten minutes I think? I bought quite a few items, good thing I had birthday money lying around from last December.
So these are all the goodies I bought:
Tumblr media
The first thing I found was PlayStation playing cards. They are inside a metallic cover and well... when I was paying I was just realizing I have a PlayStation wallet. I guess it’s clear what is my preferred console, haha.
Other than that two dice sets. The right one is colourful and magical, which will be perfect for my child wizard in the future. The left set with pink and black are for my halfling rogue. The darkness for how she stays within the shadows, and the pink for the softness she carries. The pink is stronger in real life than on the photo.
Tumblr media
I actually bought the bard card set before I got the dice, because the dice were a purchase I made after I decided I had leftover budget. I was not kidding when I say I want to go bard in a future campaign. Now I am absolutely prepared. Also, the spell card deck is much cheaper than online as far as I recall. I only know this cause I recently had been looking for a druid deck for a friend.
The Digimon image is actually a magnet! I am not over fond of square designs, but finding Digimon is rare and it’s a cute picture (Taichi is munching something while seated on Greymon’s head). I also saw another artist with flabbergasting amazing art, like holy shit, it was amazing, but they only sold prints and I prefer stuff that can be stuck on something (magnets, stickers, keychains, buttons).
Which is why it is probably odd I bought Overwatch prints, but they were 50 cents each, I couldn’t resist. He even sold Lucio, come on. I appreciate anyone who actually makes content for Lucio!
The last two things are the Lucky Charm sticker and the button of Ladybug and Chat Noir, but the latter was actually a gift! The vendor saw me walk by, asked if I was Ladybug indeed and then handed it to me. I was actually quite surprised (and like any Dutch person I accept free things).
Literally all the shop keepers at Comic Con were so nice in general. It was a very small con, which is why I have no cosplay selfies (plus the fact it’s harder when you are alone), meaning they had more time to make conversation.
I also did one commission even if I was tempted to do more. Budgeting and all... so I commissioned my hobbit from Lord of the Rings Online. Because she’s not a D&D character she’s often overlooked when commissioning, so I went for it.
Tumblr media
She looks so pretty, but also young, so I imagine this is what she would’ve looked like in her earlier years perhaps. Since the artist forgot her scar, definitely before her adventuring days. I really like it, and I find it so interesting how she colours. It was made by @nathaliejang and although I was forced to leave later for the train because of the commission, it was worth it.
While I waited for the commission I was actually able to play D&D though! I got to test out my dice (used my rogue dice) and they seem to roll me good numbers.
Tumblr media
I joined the 13:30 campaign and I think we ran until 15:45. They had five characters. Two fighters, one rogue, one cleric and one wizard. Cleric being a favourite class of mine, I called ‘dibs’ before I even got to look at its sheet (mostly because I did not want to play melee and get anxious over wizards). I ended up being a dwarf... alright, fine. I was a little racist towards our elf wizard, but to be fair, he was high on himself so he deserved it. Our human fighter (who was played by a lad in actual armour, very awesome) was also not over fond of the elf, and we had a halfling rogue join us mid-game. This was the knight:
Tumblr media
It was quite fun, though it is hard for me to play a pre-made character with pre-defined goals and flaws, and a race I’d never see myself play. The DM was rather chill (and reminded him that people roll death saves at 0 HP, our wizard fell), so that was nice.
Did I expect to play D&D at a Comic Con? Absolutely not. Will I do it again? Possibly, dependent of the edition. Comic Con in Rotterdam and Amsterdam are so small that there is time to spare, but in Utrecht? No way, too big of a venue with too many events.
The way back was hellish again due to really loud boys (they don’t deserve to be called men with their behaviour) and I have a headache that’s killing me, but at least it was fun.
Oh, and I didn’t even mention I bought fudge... mint flavour, coffee flavour and baileys flavour...
--- RCC 2020 - Ladybug (Miraculous Ladybug) WDCC 2019 - Ladybug (Miraculous Ladybug) / Mimi (Digimon) ACC 2019 - no report, little happened

7 Lugares para ouvir Rock em Amsterdam!
Tumblr media
Police, Prince, The Killers, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, The Sex Pistols, The Rolling Stones, Madonna, Amy Winehouse, Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers e Metallica já tocaram aqui.
2. Excalibur
4. The Waterhole
5. The Cave

The View from Global Britain (a small Island off the North West of Europe, sailing North-by-North-West towards an unknown destination)
Tumblr media
Later, when he reviewed the strange sequence of events that led to the breakdown of order and the reversion of the high rise residence to a state of near primitive excess and violence, Dr Gove concluded that it might all be traced back to that one day...
A sickly, swollen orange early morning sun squinted pallidly through the chemical haze over the East End of London’s Docklands. Gove reached over casually from his balcony chair to pick up one of the three books lying on his coffee table. It was a warm day already at 8am outside on the apartment balcony:  he had not bothered to change out of his boxer shorts and T-shirt. A well thumbed classic Penguin edition of George Orwell’s Collected Essays and Journalism Volume 4, lay on one side of the reclining beach style chair, that was his usual morning professional treat before the driver arrived. It was marked with pink post it slips on the pages of the essay ‘The Lion and the Unicorn’. Underneath, was a glossy, less well read edition of translated selections from Michel Foucault’s 1970 College de France Lectures on Governmentality. But the book he perused over the top of his red designer Ace & Tate glasses – which he had bought on the last trip to Amsterdam – was a cherished copy of Roger Scruton’s The Philosopher on Dover Beach. An opera lover, the strains of one of Wagner’s Rings could be heard from his Danish Bang & Olufsen state-of-the-art stereo system inside. Funnily enough, he had seen it live together with his friend, rival and now boss, Johnson, and their now ex-wives in Germany, only a few weeks before D-Day, all that time ago. He congratulated himself once again on the purchase of the Segafredo coffee maker, as he drained the content of his third nespresso of the morning, pausing only slightly to feel the slight twinge of pain that followed in his chest. If only he were George Clooney, he thought, wryly.
Such was the cool clarity of his thoughts, that he barely stirred as a scream was heard from the Branson Mansion above him on the 255th floor of the monstrous tower block he lived in. This state of the art tower occupied mainly by high ranking government officials such as himself, or top end CEOs such as Branson, was one of two similar twin towers – “The Rock across from “The Edge” – that commanded the entire festering zone wasteland of the former Docklands, north of Greenwich. The high rises were impregnable silver fortresses, self contained with sporting facilities, state of the art cinematic entertainment, and a high end shopping mall, that also functioned seamlessly as child care and schooling facilities for families, and contained all other essential services. The building was equipped with two helicopter landing pads that usually were high enough to clear the low lying cloud of pollution which mostly separated the social classes. Below the towers, under ground level society, was an interconnected underground elite parking facility, that led directly out on to the national freeway grid. His quizzical blue eyes lifted up momentarily from the pages of the philosopher Scruton elucidating a point about Edmund Burke, as a large dead dog thrown from above, flew past the balcony and down, a further half kilometer or so, before crashing through the roof of one of the dozen White “Go Home Immigrants” hostility vans parked there. There was a small commotion among a group of female cleaning service workers arriving for work, apparently Polish, from the distant sound of their foreign voices in the silent city morning. There were still irregularities in the population, he surmised.
He shifted his body with discomfort, however, when he noticed that one or two drops of a rabid red froth from the half decapitated dog had landed on the page of Scruton’s text. He lay the book aside to make a note on a pad that Branson would have to be asked to leave the country.
Gove had been around as a shadowy governmental advisor in the Santiago and Buenos Aires of the 1970s; you sometimes knew when it was a time for a change. These were places he had learned his trade. He recognised though that for all its rationality, violently capturing, torturing and then dumping by helicopter these “nowhere” types in the Thames Estuary was no longer a viable option in the England of the Twenty First Century. Yes, they were a fifth column. These cosmopolitan, nomadic, “transnational” intellectuals and their rich compatriots, who shared a hypocritical nostalgia for the free moving global planet of their youth; a few were still EU sympathisers and internationalist terrorists. Still, he smiled wryly, there was no going back to the River Plate during the heady days of the 1978 World Cup. Even for a criminal like Branson, it was not a practical option. Well, he’d made damn sure that his superior Mrs Thatcher wash her hands of any responsibility for anything her old friend, General Pinochet, had done. And it was true that after, his comrade General Galtieri had returned the favour to the dear Iron Lady, who had been in a tough spot herself in 1981. What they devised was the courtesy of a staged, “low level” invasion of the Falklands Island, that had proven a pioneer of a new brand of simulacra wars (“good for politics, good for business”, a military showcase “win-win-win” all round) that independent islands could engage in to maintain autarkic economic dynamism and electoral support in an now entirely protectionist world. Those were the stuff of international relations today, but always dangerous of course given the hardware, sometimes even nuclear, involved. Protest was usually muted among any remaining “Remain” activists or (so-called) “global” protestors. There were still plenty of academic sanctuaries abroad for renegade university academics, and Branson would be easily “persuaded” – with the right threat –  to take a one way ticket to New York or Los Angeles; places where enclaves of humanitarian CEOs still grumbled together in secret societies about the policies of supreme leader Donald Trump.
He wondered about the scream, though, and idly flicked on the telescreen that was partly masked behind a reproduction of a Kandinsky print on the dining room wall. The Party spokesman was celebrating loudly another victory for the People, that had been delivered that morning, like clockwork, with monotonous weekly regularity. The magic numbers: 52% for Leave, 48% for Remain; a weekly plebiscite delivered electronically by a large, government owned public opinion survey company, Big Big DATA Inc. The weekly vote stabilised the ongoing national need to adjust the population – for example, by removing persons of certain foreign extraction – to deliver the correct mathematical proportion that had been adjusted to represent the exact optimal mix for a definitively binding democratic result (the formula went): “democratic outcomes in divided societies which had decided to resolve their differences by a simple direct Yes/No method”. It was also one reason why they could not go on more strongly with the policy his previous boss Mrs May had devised. The “Go Home” Immigration vans and deportation squads (the “weekly hostility” she called it), particularly targeted at the heavily Europeanised university academic population. Too many deportations and the Remain vote (“Remoaners”, he chuckled) might be too quickly depleted.
The screen changed to an image of a man in a red tie, the officially employed Opposition Leader that Gove himself had hired in one of his occasional, but nonetheless regular, strokes of genius. The annoying man on screen swiftly changed the topic as always to a passionate denunciation of the poverty conditions of white working class voters. What a national shame it was, he said, they had been forced to live now for several decades of austerity gentrification and slum clearance, that had left nothing much of most major cities in the kingdom except mile upon mile of concrete wreckage underneath the sporadic, tree like growth of these huge, shiny residential blocks. Most of these had been built by shady Shanghai and Istanbul owned corporations that had been offered bi-lateral franchise access to the Island, in spite of other barriers to World Trade.
He went back to his laptop writing, a new proposal for entirely consolidating a nationalisation of the national game, which he had loosely imagined as an evolution of the Eton Wall Game. An architect of the national curriculum that had expurgated any traces of “global citizenship” from the education of Engand’s youth, Gove’s influence over the last years had extended to all areas of national culture where some sort of withdrawal from the previously established global or international practices needed to be conceived. Sport was his new brief. The idea had first come to him while watching the World Cup of Summer 2018: the brilliant combination of young British Black and White talent – Ali, Lingard and Kane – that had combined to score goal after goal against foreign allcomers – Japan, Columbia, Sweden – before unfairly succumbing to evil European refereeing against Croatia in the semifinal. As all the newspapers had said, in that hot and heady summer after the first Brexit vote, all future troubles were forgotten as England had united, and seemed to throw away all bitterness and caution in celebration, drinking, cheering, loving and kissing; the white St.George red cross fluttered everywhere over a happy and unified multi-racial land.
Indeed, as economists made clear, the date of January 31st 2020 was the demographic turning point. D-Day, it was called now, a national holiday; Independence Day, being the other major national festival on 23rd June. D-Day, Gove had argued, was the date at which Britain’s international and foreign population was at its optimal peak of absorption into a wholly national economy. The doors could be clanged shut on freedom of movement, but also on trade and industry, since Gove and his colleagues had devised a failsafe scheme to enable Britain to slowly transform all of its internationalised practices into distinct, diverse, incompatible alternatives, that would by their difference and originality, be highly innovative, rich in IP, and world beating. They would however have no compatibility with the outside; of little moment, given the huge backwater of an empire the Island still could call upon. This left a problem of course, for Britain’s national sport and greatest global export, football. This had necessitated Gove’s creative intervention, adapting the Eton Wall Game. He chuckled again at the thought of his heroes Ali, Lingard and Kane, mucking in with the boys, down in the scrum next to the wall, just as Gove, Johnson, Cameron, Goodhart and their idol Orwell had all done as youngsters.
This was still a white paper, for now, and the nation had continued to rely on bi- and multi-lateral agreements and some irregularities to allow the open labour market for the Championship League. It was true: it had more Italian and Portuguese football managers, and more star African players than ever. And yes, it was an exception to the nation’s stringent anti–immigration, zero foreigner policy. A mere “anomaly” , he had called it on Question Time.
What economists and demographers had also discovered though in 2016 was fateful. A now legendary paper by a demographer called Coleman, its framed original folio at the entrance to the British Museum, had shown that if population trends continued – with freedom of movement and immigration – the original White British population would become a minority by 2070, amidst mixed marriages, higher immigrant child birth rates, and (far) too many “people of colour” among foreign-origin migrants. Gove was analytic enough to recognise these populations had been sources of the extraordinary boom years of the 1990s and 2000s, but had been the one thinker with the foresight to see that the door had to be shut in June 2016, if Britain was ever to integrate all these human resoruces and become an independent island again. The People was called upon, and dutifully delivered its 52%. The answer was naturalising, rigorously, everyone on the Island at that moment in time – whether they wanted it or not. That was the key although it would be havoc for the weekly referendum that he knew was needed to maintain the 52% plebiscite of democracy over the Remain vote – hence the further statistical tricks and legal exclusion – and “disappearances” out to sea, if necessary.
They were well on the way to creating a new British population, however, which was remarkable for its multi-racial “super-diversity” (it was called) and yet could maintain stably what another economist, Collier, had calculated as England’s uniquely 80% English DNA national origins, traced back to the Magna Carta. Freedom and Rationality could grow again on this soil.
It was of course on that day, 31st January 2020, that England unveiled its secret plan to escape from Europe, at the cliffs of Dover: making use of the decaying tunnels abandoned by Eurostar and roll-on-roll-off transportation companies, the government had motorised the white cliffs, using a clever combination of nuclear and wind power, that in fact would enable a significant geological shift to begin to move the Island (henceforth capitalised) in a North-by-North-Westerly direction towards the Atlantic. The colony of Ireland would be merged again, as it collided with the British Isles, and a Scotland somewhat reduced -- natural shrinkage caused by damage to its exterior north west coastline buffered by the rough merging and the seas as the Island moved implacably in the direction of Greenland. The South East of England became the only temperate part of the Island as it moved out to sea, further driving up housing prices.
And so on that day, the TVs were all re-set to Telescreens and Party news only, and the new People’s Democracy began. Gove’s slightly lazy left eye almost welled with a gin soaked tear, as he recalled the first judder and grinding geological movement of the Island at the Dover coast. On the cliffs, all the major national dignitaries and leaders had gone to celebrate the occasion. Yes, the Island was moving in the sea, and it had been followed by the slow, at first imperceptible descending of a mist, then an ever thicker fog, which cut off all visible trace of the receding continent across the water. As had been planned, telecommunications and internet networks were disrupted to come under strict territorial control again, and the Island had its independence back. News footage of Lady Diana’s funeral had been used as the first broadcast, to set the right tone. The people cheered wildly, underneath the white and red cross flags, across the nation – the true World Cup spirit back again – as it headed out, impregnable and forever undefeated, towards the icy waters of the North West Atlantic....
*****
It may only have been synchronicity, but at that very moment in a liberal arts college in Southern California, Dr Wong, a young Asian Amercian academic put down her laptop, and reached for a lemonade. The book on her table was a new edition of Gayatri Spivak’s collected essays. The palm trees over the boulevard swayed lightly as a sweet breeze blew in from the desert.
She finished the final sentence of the draft of of a paper for Global Text, which proposed the theoretical framework for the creation of a new interdisciplinary field of occidentalist area studies, “England Studies”. The topic had strangely never been tried before. She had made her name as a post-doc in cosmology, studying black holes (like Steven Hawking, she used to joke), but had switched briefly but brilliantly to zoology during the first five years of her teaching career, making a cutting contribution to contemporary Japanese cultural studies, writing about its remarkable population of otaku and cosplay database animals. However, publisher interest in this well known remote but inaccessible East Asian Galapagos fantasy island lost somewhere in the Pacific, had been waning for some time. Were there not other black holes to discover? One day at the gym a new idea came to her. Why not somewhere in Europe instead of Asia, as a next career move? – especially since the EU had become such a historical curiosity, since its demise. After all, nobody could now quite work out what on Earth anyone had been thinking when they dreamed ludicrously of “European Community” or – and this one really took the grand prix – “European Citizenship”!!. What hilarious and zany times those European post-war “trentes glorieuses” had been!
Yet, ten years on from Independence Day, it seemed that Britain (as it was sometimes still referred to, in academic circles) had moved far enough away from mainland Europe into the upper ocean streams of the Atlantic – somewhere between “Greenland” and “Iceland”, which already had fields devoted to them – to allow for a new field of Area Studies, however challenging the remote fieldwork there. An Island, no doubt with its own strange, unsustainable, close-to-extinct creatures, practices and ideas, like 3G phone technology before the iPhone.
This would surely get her tenure, or even an outside job offer on this year’s market, certainly good enough to allow a fresh negotiation with her Department Chair, she thought....
