Books around the world
A while ago, I made a post that I want to make a list of books from every country of the earth. The qualifications are rather simple: The author needs to be from that country and the novel needs to take place in that country. The books themselves don't need to be the best from that country, just something I've read. They need to exist in a language that I can understand (which, for me, are German, English, Norwegian and Swedish).
If you have any suggestions, please send them to me 😊 So, without further ado, here is the list! (Books that I've already read are bold, books I have picked out for the country but haven't read yet are not)

National Straw Hat Day
Straw Hat Day falls on May 15th, a day dedicated to celebrating straw hats’ versatility and timeless appeal.
It’s a fun way to welcome warmer weather while acknowledging the hat’s long history as both a practical item for sun protection and a fashion statement.
People across various cultures have embraced straw hats for centuries, from Ecuador’s finely woven Panama hats to the Mokorotlo of South Africa, highlighting their global appeal and adaptability.
The day encourages everyone to explore the wide range of styles straw hats offer, from classic boaters and fedoras to contemporary designs.
It’s the perfect occasion to showcase personal style, whether by wearing a favorite straw hat or even crafting a unique one. The celebration isn’t just about style; it also serves as a reminder of the straw hat’s functionality in providing shade and cooling relief on sunny days.
Engaging in Straw Hat Day can be as simple as donning a straw hat or as creative as designing and decorating one’s own. It’s also a great opportunity for community participation through local parades, festivals, and fashion shows.
At such events, the diverse interpretations of straw hat styles can be fully displayed. The holiday stands out for its quirky charm, promoting a light-hearted and enjoyable way to enjoy the outdoors and express individuality through fashion.
History of Straw Hat Day
The tradition of wearing straw hats dates back even further. They were part of fashion trends from the Middle Ages and gained popularity in the 19th century, especially for summer sporting events like boating.
Straw hats became a summer and informal attire symbol, even in big cities, by the early 20th century.
In the United States, Straw Hat Day became an official event in New Orleans in the 1920s, thanks to a proclamation by Mayor Andrew McShane.
The day was marked with much fanfare, including record-breaking hat sales, cannon firings, and even hats thrown from building roofs. For about four decades, the day was celebrated with great enthusiasm, with activities ranging from parades to giveaways.
However, as the fashion of wearing hats daily waned in the 1960s, so did the popularity of Straw Hat Day.
A significant, though more somber, part of straw hat history is the Straw Hat Riot of 1922 in New York City. This event highlighted the social importance and rules surrounding hat-wearing at the time.
There was an unwritten rule that straw hats were only appropriate until September 15th, after which men were expected to switch to felt or silk hats. Violations of this convention could lead to public ridicule or even the physical destruction of the straw hat by others.
The riot began when youths prematurely started enforcing the rule, leading to widespread brawls and significant social disruption.
This history not only shows the importance of straw hats in fashion but also reflects on social norms and behaviors of past times.
Today, Straw Hat Day is a lighter, more celebratory remembrance of these traditions, encouraging everyone to enjoy and appreciate the timeless style of straw hats.
How to Celebrate Straw Hat Day
Celebrating Straw Hat Day is an opportunity to embrace fashion’s quirky and fun side. Here are some playful and engaging ways to mark the occasion:
Hat Hackathon
Why not personalize your straw hat? Think about adding colorful ribbons, vibrant flowers, or even painting a masterpiece on it. You can turn this into a friendly competition among friends to see who comes up with the most creative design.
Picnic with Panache
Imagine a sunny day at the park, you and your friends lounging on blankets, all donning stylish straw hats. It’s not just about the hats but making memories under the open sky, enjoying good food and great company.
Festival or Parade Participation
Local festivals or parades often celebrate Straw Hat Day. Dress up in your finest straw hat and join the fun. You might even discover some impressive hat designs that inspire your next creation.
Garden Crafts
Transform your straw hat into a unique piece of art for your garden. From whimsical wreaths to charming planters, let your creativity blossom. It’s a delightful way to blend fashion and nature.
Straw Hat Photoshoot
Dress up in your favorite outfits complemented by straw hats and have a photoshoot. Whether it’s in your backyard, a city street, or a picturesque park, capture the joy of Straw Hat Day.

Chapter 8
His morning had been going so well.
Woken with kisses trailed along the curve of his shoulder and a promise of spending the day together, murmured into his cheek with more kisses. He hadn’t hesitated to accept, the words “brunch” and “a little fun” never failed to rouse him, but—
This was not what he had in mind.
“I wish you had told me before that we were going to the horse races,” River groused.
“It would have ruined the surprise,” was Crocodile’s reasonable answer, said with a contented plume of smoke from his first cigar of the day.
“I hate horses.”
He pursed his lips to resist his bubbling amusement. “And what have they done to deserve your ire? They’re magnificent animals, loyal and strong.”
“Every horse I’ve ever met has tried to bite me.”
“Perhaps they smell your fear?”
“All the more reason to avoid them.” River’s nose tipped to the air, the most uppity he’s ever seen him, and he felt his face beginning to crack.
“I wasn’t aware there were so many horses in Panama. How many have you met, exactly?”
“One.”
The rhythmic lifting of his shoulders told River he was laughing at him, quietly, almost politely, and he fixed the taller man with a precious pout.
“Oh, that face tells me I won’t be able to convince you the horse you met was a statistical outlier.”
“Not a chance.”
Crocodile’s wide, jeweled palm slid along his waist, offering a champagne flute he had snatched off a passing tray, and paired with a soft smile. “Here. Should I hunt you down some fruit to apologize for my rudeness?”
“It would be a start.”
The food tents weren’t more than a few hundred paces from where he left River to keep himself busy, but the part of him that had never been good at playing nice with others made sure River never left his peripheral.
Seasonal fruits, cut into kitschy shapes caught his eye beside other cold snacks, with his victory immediately cut short by an irritating, grating drawl.
“Glad you could make it. How long have you been here without coming to say hello?” Doflamingo wedged his lanky body between him and the table.
“I was hoping to set a new record for us having been in the same area and not spoken. I’ll start the time again.”
His laugh rang beneath the shallow tent, pinging off the fine dining ware and spoiling Crocodile’s ability to recall River’s preferences for sweets. “And where’s your new toy? I want to meet them, I know they’re here.”
Mindlessly, his hands piled a shallow plate with watermelon and strawberries. In the silence that implied he should answer, he attempted to calculate the statistical probability he could keep River from the pink menace for the rest of the day. The odds were… not good.
“Follow me.”
But as they turned the corner to see River smiling, laughing with the daughter of the Nefertari family, Doflamingo’s mood soured beside him. His usual bravado dissolved to a cold, unforgiving affect in his suddenly rigid posture. Above them, the sun took their leave behind the trees, spreading a dimness over the summer picnic to become a frightened gray.
“Crocodile. You disappoint me.”
“Excuse me?” He turned when the crunch of footsteps in grass failed to follow him.
“What do you see?”
“Do not ask me pointless questions.”
“If that is your toy, the rent boy chatting with Vivi, then what else am I meant to assume?”
He was undeterred, foolishly, by Crocodile’s silence. “You seem confused. See, earlier this week I saw him while I was picking up my suit at the tailor. I thought, ‘Where have I seen him before?’ Now, watching him smile at sweet Vivi I can say for sure: I have people who work that street too. And while I’ve never had the pleasure of tasting the product myself—”
“The next words you say will have irreparable consequences on our relationship.”
He blinked behind his obnoxious pink glasses, genuine surprise painting his gape for a single moment. The next brought an easy smirk, fitting for the ever opportunist, one who was horribly, impossibly hard to frighten away. “So it’s that serious.”
“You always dance around the point, stop fucking around—”
“I think he’s a plant, Crocodile. Think of how easy you bought him, would it really be that strange someone hired him to get close to you? And take information back to Cobra’s team? The old man isn’t willing to do what it takes, but that’s nothing to say about the rest of them. It’s what I would do.”
And there were people like Doflamingo everywhere, that he knew all too well. “It’s too convenient. Too complicated, the simpler explanation is far more likely: What is all my wealth for if I don’t indulge once in awhile?”
“That good, huh?”
His scoff oozed disgust. “Go away. I want to enjoy my day off in peace.”
Doflamingo shouted after him, “I thought you didn’t take days off when you’re so close to closing!”
~*~
Beneath a tree, River sipped happily, admiring the sun beginning to emerge from behind the clouds and the mild temperature, a pleasant afternoon despite the earthen smell of animal lingering with the lunch being served. He almost mistook the steps behind him for Crocodile, until magnolias came fluttering up to his nose on the wind.
“Mr. Faustina! It’s awfully good to see you again. Are you here with friends?” Vivi beamed at him, her white-gloved hand smoothing the front of her riding outfit, a periwinkle polo and crisp trousers.
“I’m here with Crocodile. He’s—somewhere, probably with the food. Are you racing today?”
“It’s just a hobby, less of a competition, for me at least. Won’t you come meet my horse, Karoo?”
“I’m sure they’re as lovely as you are, but I’m really—,” his throat bobbed, his smile wavering, “Really not good with large animals.”
“Well, that’s all right, I won’t pressure you… Actually, I wanted to apologize.”
His surprise washed over his face in an embarrassed flush. “To me? What for?”
“For how I acted at dinner the other night. My father’s situation is… a sensitive topic for me, I’m afraid I’m still learning how to defend him amicably. With grace.”
“Never apologize for your passion. Your self-awareness is already more than anyone has any right to ask for.” He held out his hand, and placed a kiss to the back of her glove. “You have all the grace of royalty, don’t let anyone tell you different.”
She squeezed his hand before letting it fall, the furrow of her brows a reaction he hadn’t expected. “Then I’ll ask you something I had decided before to be too rude. What is a man like you doing with Crocodile?”
“I—” He scrunched his brow back at her, searching for any kind of answer but the truth. His sudden smile, cheeky against the lip of his champagne, equally she did not expect. “Would you believe me if I said I’m using him for sex?”
She spluttered politely, pink in the cheeks and holding her hand over her mouth to soften her chortle. “I’m sorry, it was too personal a question. Thank you for humoring me.”
Her acknowledgment of his deflection only confirmed how clever he found her, a princess of her own world, as deserving of her crown as she was charming. “Have you given any thought to what I asked you the other day?”
“The largest shareholder besides my father and I is Mr. Toto, at least that’s what I’ve called him since I was little, but he’s been very sick for a long time.”
“Shit,” River said, his hand beginning to twitch with want for a cigarette. They were out of time—
“His son, Koza, is in charge of his estate, but I don’t remember the last time he came to a shareholders meeting. He takes care of his father full time.”
“Do you have a way for me to contact him?”
“If I can’t get through to him, he won’t answer for you.”
“One meeting.” River insisted, taking back her gloved hand to plead. “And you need to be there too.”
“Me? I just said he isn’t listening to me—”
“And you’ll let that stop you? That doesn’t sound like the Vivi who almost threw a punch at a dangerous businessman in a fancy restaurant.”
She coughed out a laugh, embarrassed in the rose of her cheeks, but the grin at the corner of her mouth spoke of pleased flattery. And yet doubt flashed across her eyes, evidence she preened against the advice of her elders. “Isn’t that awful of me?”
“Demanding respect is always lady-like. Come on, you’re a princess of industry—lead me. Command Koza’s attention, and we might have a chance.”
Though she didn’t have time to answer, the slow slide of her insecurity into a renewed, bright smile, stuffed hope back into his chest.
“Might I know what we’re laughing about?” Crocodile said from behind them.
“I was telling her why I hate horses,” River grinned as he dropped her hand. “My backside still has the scar.”
Vivi bit her lip on another giggle. Across the lawn, the referee called for her return. “I need to be getting ready for the race. Enjoy your afternoon, gentleman.”
Once the princess was out of earshot and River was distracted, tucked into his fruits with happy munching sounds, Crocodile put his arm around his shoulders to rumble beside his ear. “I’ve seen every inch of your skin, enough to know that part of you is deliciously unmarred.”
“It was just to make her laugh,” River giggled, swiping at his chin to be sure he wasn’t getting fruit juice on the front of his new shirt. “And it made you jealous, I should say it was a successful fib.”
The breeze came by to pick up the ends of his hair, at the same time Crocodile’s smile turned down at the corners of his eyes. There it was, that ember of who he really was, what past lovers had spat with contempt—jealous. At least this time he managed to be gentle as he spoke:
“What did she really ask you?”
River fidgeted with a strawberry at the edge of his plate, the one he was saving for last. “She asked what our relationship was.”
“What did you tell her?”
“That your dick is big.”
It might have been the loudest he’s laughed in years, grinning wide, and taking River’s hand without complaint, so uncaring of the socialites who stared, subjected to their unabashed delight in each other. “She is a good kid.”
“A lovely young woman… She doesn’t need to know the truth.”
That quick, the moment was over, and though River scolded himself for speaking so candidly, he knew it needed to be said. For all the smiles they found in each other, warm to their core not by the summer sun through the branches, they both knew how they came to be here. Maybe, he believed if he stated it so plainly that they were nothing more than the mirage they painted, Crocodile might refute him.
But he stayed quiet, and the squeeze of his hand around River’s palm was not enough. It never was. Even as though both knew, under the pale blue of broad daylight:
They wanted it to be.

Continued....
... an honorary doctor of divinity degree.
He had attended Southern University in Greensboro, Ala., in his late teen years and early twenties. And during those years he married and then lost his bride to death 10 months later.
There’s so much more to this story. So much. Stay tuned...
At 40, he looked back over 25 years since he had launched his ministry in the Alabama countryside under a makeshift brush-arbor and could count 12,000 sermons preached in 30 states and several foreign countries, reaching audiences exceeding a reputed 15,000,000. He had shaken hands with 300,000 who agreed to accept Christ as personal Saviour and learned that 100,000 of these had joined a church.
This is so much myth. I have tracked every week of Bob Jones, Sr.’s life from 1896 to 1946. So I know where he preached, how long, and when. But I’ll cover that in a much longer work.
Notice how these people “got saved.” There’s no “sinner’s prayer.” THEY SHOOK BOB’S HAND.
This is documented over and over. This is how he got all those “conversions.”
It was during these years that Dr. Bob Sr. had learned so often of disillusionment on the part of young people from fine Christian homes who lost their commitment and faith when they went away to college.
Dr. Bob Sr. had married again in 1908, two years after his first wife's tragic death. The partnership created in 1908 still endures and the former Mary Gaston Stollenwerck is a figure loved by all BJU faculty, alumni and students.
When Dr. Bob Sr. confided to her over a picnic lunch one long-ago day, en route from one preaching assignment to another, that he planned to build a college, Mary Gaston was completely convinced that his sincerity and ability would assure success in this venture in faith.
Actually, Bob Jr. was just entering high school. And well, there’s more local stuff that was going on. I can’t wait to share the story...
While Dr. Bob Sr. is beloved by many, he never hesitated to speak out forcefully against, and to those he disagreed with. And there were those whose criticism -- and even enmity -- put stumbling stones in his path. But his perseverance surmounted all obstacles.
Enmity. ಠ_ಠ
The little college established first on 500 acres of pine woods on St. Andrews Bay, nine miles from Panama City, Fla., developed into a lovely campus with buildings of Spanish architecture. He insisted on "academic standards to be accurate enough to pass muster in any institution anywhere in America." Shortly, after the school was opened it was accredited by the State University of Florida.
I’d love to find evidence of that “accreditation.” BJU is the only source so far.
Vividly recalling his own struggle for an education, Bob Sr. determined "to keep financial requirements for for entrance at a minimum, to establish a student loan endowment fund and to operate a farm and dairy to provide work for students."
His faculty were required to sign a creed that embodied his fundamentalism-"if it's in the Bible, I believe it." And if they were unwilling to sign, they weren't wanted.
Sigh....
Dr. Bob Sr. continued his evangelistic work and as the depression years rolled around he put into his institution the savings of years of work -- so the little college survived those student years, maintaining a student body of 200.
Growing pains saw the college move to Cleveland, Tenn., and Dr. Bob Sr.'s commitment to his educational ideals ever deepening and strengthening.
“Growing pains.” Right.
Bob Sr. gave the daily chapel talks at Cleveland, as he had started in Florida. His rapport with the student body grew steadily through his homespun bits of philosophy, his slogans and his messages, delivered with persuasion and fervor.
He branched out, too, into the printed media and over the air waves with his messages. His syndicated newspaper columns gained such wide acceptance that they were collected and published, and gradually the philosophy of Dr. Bob Sr. was contained in an ever-growing number of volumes.
Bob was always in the media. He was always talking. That’s why I was able to track every week of his life!
The years flew by, the college became a university and was moved to Greenville. But the staunch fundamentalist was unchanged save as age took its. toll of this man who had done so much, dared so much and achieved so much.
At the age of 63, he retired as college president, turning the reins over to his son, Dr. Bob Jr. At 79, he retired as chairman of the board.
There’s that year again: 1964.

"Col. Warden Puts on His Straw Hat," Border Cities Star. May 8, 1934. Page 12. --- Summer Is Official As Panama and White Duck Pants Appear --- AT LAST it has happened. What? Why the sign we've been looking for all week long, the appearance of the first straw hat. And now the robins can go on chirruping, the trees can burst into leaf. and the pink blossoms of the cherry trees can bloom, for summer has come.
What surer sign of approaching summer can one desire than the appearance of a straw hat set jauntily upon the cranium of a male? Young lads can test the waters of the Detroit river and bravely shiver as The Star photographer snaps them in their favorite diving pose; roadsters with rumble seats filled can race through the streets, and even picnics can be planned. All are signs of summer, we'll admit, but there's no sign like the old "strawlid."
It happened this morning in Sandwich. Sandwich never comes up to scratch on Tuesday mornings as far as news is concerned. There just isn't any, or rather there just wasn't any until Col. J. W. Warden. governor of the Essex County jail breezed along looking very summery indeed.
The reporter chanced to look out from the windows of the County buildings, and there went the Colonel. The Colonel wore a straw hat, or perhaps it was a panama. Nevertheless it was the summer type of lid worn by the male portion of the population to keep off the hot rays the noonday sun.
And not only did the Colonel supply the surest sign of summer by appearing on the streets with a straw, but he also wore a pair of white ducks, a blue coat, and his shirt was open at the neck. So if summer doesn't arrive pretty soon then somewhere the signs have been crossed.
