~~~.~⛏️~.~~~ || Myla - Hollow Knight || self request :)
I love Myla sm!!! I wanted to do a stimboard without me having to make my own gifs to sort of get me back into the swing of things, and not having to find and edit down videos myself is easier haha!! For this one, I wanted to do it mostly around one idea, the purple crystals, but then felt like adding the two orange gems for a splash of color and also to sort of signify the infection in Hallownest!! I think it turned out pretty cool the 3rd and 7th gifs were a pain to edit, too, and I really have no idea why, so they look a bit wonky, but since I really wanted to take it easy on this one I decided to not search for replacements.
I have thought long and hard about my party-smoker addiction to cigarettes and what their appeal to my nature is, and I have come to a conclusion:
Cigarettes are extremely consumable-item-core
You feel like you have a universal interaction key in your hotbar. It's like a stimming toy and a valuable trade object in one. Whenever I smoke I feel like I am drinking a potion in Skyrim. It, in fact, 100% feels EXACTLY like smoking in GTA V. There is no difference.
Gum kinda has the same quality. But it is lessend by the fact that you still have all of it left after its use. Snacks and Drinks are also similar, but since they serve a specific, important need, it lacks casualness. Thats also why vapes don't work, they are like share-able, but more like a minecraft pickaxe with durability.
It sucks but cigarettes, as bad as they are, do something to my autism rat brain apart from the drug aspect.
I love skyrim potions.
Ironically from the outside, as someone with AuDHD I have never understood the problem other people have with meditation.
I’m not saying it’s never not easy for me, because depending on what gear my brain is in it’s easy to get distracted and forget what I was doing.
My tip there: Count up to 10, one a breath. At 10, go back down to 1. You’ll suddenly find yourself at 15, realize you’ve been distracted, and restart. Slow your breaths each cycle.
Anyway…
Point four? “Untangling” your thoughts?
My memory is jank, so it’s not saying much, but I legitmately can’t remember a time where I didn’t do this for myself. And I have Aphantasia (no inner vision), but in a kinesthetic pseudo-visual way do it literally.
Like, be frustrated, so I imagine my thoughts are a tangled ball of yarn, and tease out strand by strand.
Can’t stop thinking about something? Visualize grabbing the idea, folding it into a crane, then putting the crane in a box, close the lid, grab the next irritating thought. This takes a while, and the crumpled papers keep falling back down in the mindpalace cascade, but every time I fold a specific thought up it’s a tiny bit weaker.
To go to sleep, I take apart my body. Start at the toes, pretend I’m artificially organic, pop out at the joints and stretch out and massage the muscles then put each maintenanced piece in their own lined box, move up the body, feel my body become warmly heavy numb until I’m stretching out the neck vertebrae.
Meditative visualization, first and foremost, should be something that works for you.
Imagine walking down a beach, the sound and smell of the waves, a pleasing visual white noise unbroken as far as you can see?
Grabbing a pixelated pickaxe and mining down to bedrock, then jumping up to grass and starting again, the rhythm of known beats and familiar graphics?
Running down endless pavement, the compression of your joints, the swing of your arms, nothing to see just feeling?
A recording of a favorite prayer, in a pleasing voice, in loop as you clear your mind and contemplate the words until they are so consumed they are both meaningless and infinite?
Physically stimming, tapping your fingers together with your eyes partially crossed to focus on them, the gentle pain washing out the outside world?
As long as what you do encourages you to slow down your breathing and, gradually, your heart rate, your mind tumbling itself clean for like clothes in the laundry, round and round until the rough edges are polished out just enough to feel a bit more glossy when you’re done…
You’re meditating.
Also: Can’t sit still???
Fine a safe space to walk a loop while you’re distracted. Get in a treadmill or stationary bike.
Grab an office chair and spin!!!!! Time your breathing to the cycles (maybe one breath every three rotations), slowing down by either slowing the spinning or extending the time between breaths.
If you’re someone who thinks calmer while moving, then that’s how you meditate!!!!!!!!!
See: Martial arts, Tai Chi!!
So. Meditation.
I expect that a lot of you just cringed. Meditation is often presented as a cure-all, much like exercise is. And just like exercise, it's presented in a moralized way that fails to account for people who struggle to "just do it". In fact, in many ways it is worse- at least with exercise, you have sports, weightlifting, and running as classics that are widely known. With meditation, the only way generally spoken about is the "sit down and clear your mind" style. If there's only one way to do something, a large number of people are going to be completely unable to do it.
What meditation is supposed to do is to get you grounded in the present moment. It's supposed to help you tune back into yourself and the immediate world around you. Yes, I know that sounds like woo. Think of it as... an extended grounding exercise.
Here are some accommodations for various problems I've seen people have with it.
It puts you to sleep? Do it before bed and before naps.
Can't sit for an extended period of time? Take whatever position is comfortable. You also don't have to do it for long periods of time. Sometimes I set aside like five minutes to chill out and meditate to ground myself, and it has noticeable benefits for me.
Can't sit still? Walk. A park would be awesome, but just a room you can pace around works. If you really have to stay in one place, rock or sway. The key is that you want a rhythmic movement that you don't have to actively think about. I know at least one person who dances.
Distracted by the world around you? Focus on the input of one of your senses. Put all your processing power into hearing everything around you, or seeing everything, or feeling everything you can touch. The last one creates a great use for any fun rocks you have; you can roll them over in your hands and feel every part of them, and just experience the Texture. An advanced version of this is trying it with two senses.
Unable to clear your mind at all? Take your thoughts, start examining and untangling them. Then, organize them and figure out where they go in your mind. Why are you having this thought? Where should it be classified? I like thinking of the thoughts as books that need to be shelved correctly. This won't get rid of the thoughts, but it works as a form of meditation because you're thinking about the thoughts rather than just thinking them.
If you have another problem with meditation, please feel free to bring it up, and I'll see if there's anything I know that might help. It still won't be for everyone. Nothing is. But having more ways more widely known will expand the number of people who benefit.
Do you enjoy creating sound effects? What is it like? What is your thought process while creating them for deepwoken?
i forgot i started writing an answer to this question and left it in drafts. whoops!
better late than never, i guess. sorry anon!
---
sound effects are a mixed bag for me personally. on the one hand, i'm a musician at heart, i've done music for about 7 years now, and i've only started dabbling in sound effects recently. on the other hand, when you get a sound effect just right, it's absolutely delicious; there's something about certain sound effects that just hits the spot.
to me, the process of making sound effects is a lot less 'i am making this based entirely on vibes and it rocks' as it is with music, and a lot more like 'i am making active, conscious decisions of sound design in order to make this collection of household items being hit in various ways sound like a fireball being cast using magic'. it takes a good bit of creativity and inventiveness, and i therefore find it to be a process that is more exhausting than regular music composition.
however, it's sometimes a lot more rewarding. i love making sound effects out of stuff that could be considered racket, or just noise - clanking dishes, spoons, pieces of wood, what have you. them's the good noises. like, i took absolute delight in making the sounds for ships in Deepwoken - most of them were made using recorded stuff from my flat, too! rattling shower curtain, creaky floors and doors, my broken shambling bedframe (that has since been fixed, worry not), flapping my clothes to make it sound like fabric being tugged on by the wind...
something something autism, something something stimming lmao
---
when i am tasked with designing any sound effect, i ask myself two questions - first, is this a real sound? and two, what other sounds would produce a similar sound to this one?
the first one is pretty straightforward - if it’s something that exists, you take a sample of the existing sound (either record it yourself or give freesound a visit - they usually have a lot of CC0 stuff) and see if it needs any enhancements - a real rock being hit with a real pickaxe may need some extra metal-on-metal noises to make it pop, etc. if it’s not real, move on to question two.
as for question two, you look at whatever visual references you have on repeat, and think of what sounds come to mind. this process is kinda like what Marshall McGee does in this video (as well as some others of his, actually - check out his channel, he’s got a lot of helpful tips on sound design!). you look for samples of those either in your own library, or on freesound, and then start messing around with them.
there was a fireball sound effect that i was tasked to make early on in Deepwoken’s production, and i really enjoyed making that. it contains the sounds of burning fire (obviously), a match being lit, a firework revving up just before launch, me exhaling air, and me running a stick across some thin metal bars. if i had just put in the sounds of fire and somehow manipulated them, it probably wouldn’t have sounded as cool. so it takes a bit of creative thinking to come up with sounds that literally do not exist - but once you get the gist of it, it’s easy to come up with little tricks like this on your own. B)
