I thought maybe the reason these prints of Gerhard Richter overpainted photos didn't quite work was the size. But then I saw an incredible Man Ray print that's even smaller, and its physical presence made me realize I'd stood in front of it before, 14 years ago. So yeah, not the size.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d91fb8d4e0a986daa8f0fb1e63397e5d/2972e34e01d264cb-00/s540x810/2a291a48fe2ef90658d270bcfb77eb676a003eb3.jpg)
images: a pile of test prints of Gerhard Richter overpainted photos, at full-size (4x6), but flat, and you can feel it; and Man Ray's Dust Breeding, 2.75 x 4.25 in., 1920 contact print which was in a show at MoMA in 2010 called The Original Copy, and which I think is the one I just saw at Glenstone this morning.

Listen I am going to use filters and shit to colorize and enlarge (…and then overpaint stuff it fucked up) like I’m in one of those old cop shows where the forensic team is just like ‘enhance’
Because I am MAD WITH POWER
So anyway here’s a backstage low res screen grab of Joseph Quinn as Eddie Munson, but dramatically colorized and shit. Bokeh and sunset lighting background? Ofc.
tech used: jpghd.com (enlarger) | palette.fm (colorizer) | deepai.org (colorizer) | photopea (overpaint/edits) | photoshop CS6 (overpaint/edits) | facetune (background/lighting) | faceapp (skin texture)

Some kind soul listed just the top of a Popples shampoo bottle, and I jumped on it. But the original eyes were painted so STARE-y. So I overpainted them a bit.
My paint application is not at all what I envisioned, cause I got it on there all sorts of crooked and poorly shaped BUT I still like it better than the starebear. 🥲
I put her on a Shadow High Pinkie, which is really not at all the right shade to match but I'm past that lil nitpick. I'm just grateful SH comes in so many colors at the moment.
I like Popples a lot but this particular sculpt is not my fave. I've just been wanting one for so long to see more modeled interpretations of the characters. So she feels a little bit creepy-easter-bunny-photo, but she fits with my stuff, what can I say.

I have a Delilah Noir !
I was looking for gunky bundles and found a damaged 'bjd' instead. She was a mess.
So I have two projects for the weeks ahead :
Celia the BJD: sculpting in Milliput for neck and hips then sanding and testing wig ideas.
Delilah Noir: acetone goop repair for the ankle, making a head cap, removing the pink overpaint from the lips, possibly filling the mouth slightly with coats of black + acrylic matte. Delilah probably won't be staying, she's a fun project but I'd want to modify her significantly.
photos under cut:

Celia's wiring. I'm not touching the eye makeup until the last minute, it gives her a cheekiness that demands attention - I will get around to doing the work!
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/8f17f2b6faa110e8bb17d76f590492a8/0cc758318e4e468e-63/s540x810/eec4f2c1b416bf4faf86db755b17d19e0c1d0b6c.jpg)
Delilah looked like she'd been splashed with coffee. Her wig was glued to the front and back of her head (no head cap) with non water-soluble (or alcohol for that matter) glue so I gently pried it off and soaked it before removing the glue with my finger nails strand by strand from the wig (acetone for the head).

Her putty was both hard and turning into dust while also oily and pretending to be soft which is a very odd textural sensation... and had cracked one of the eyes a little. I removed the eyelash and replaced it with acrylic matte sealant for glue (dries clear, no clumps, water-soluble) as well as repainting the chipped lower lash lines.
She had stains on her upper eyes at the nose bridge, the eyeliner doesn't quite fit the eye with pink parts showing - the lipstick also doesn't quite match the lip sculpt. It's taking me a while to remove the pink, I'm thinking it's maybe enamel paint

Please excuse the green putty - since fixed it. There's potential in that face, I like the heavy lidded teen goth y2k look but it's missing something beyond my skillsets.

What art supplies do you use for coloring in your sketchbook? It looks amazing
Hey there! Thanks so much! Sorry if this feels like a trick, but I actually just draw lines/inks in my sketchbook and then I add color in Photoshop. I'll do a little explanation of how I add color though in case anyone finds it helpful!
Details and pics under the cut!
First I take a photo of the sketch:
This one was done in 2023 so he's in pencil, but so far in 2024 all my sketchbook drawings have been with a ballpoint pen. Anyway I adjust the contrast how I like and sometimes I nudge things around if they were asymmetrical or if the head was too big, for example. In this image if you look closely at his neck you can see a "seam" where I had used the lasso tool to make an adjustment.
Then I add a bit of warm tone and cream background to everything:
Then I do the the colors on a "multiply" layer that's on top of the lines. I end up with this:
I could definitely stop here if I wanted to, but I like to do an "overpaint" layer on top of everything where I paint with a simple circle brush to bring out some details:
So in the final version you can see that I cleaned up his eyes and put the little sparkle of life in there, and I painted the shine on his armor. I also outlined his jaw so the contour wouldn't get lost against the neck of his black. On this drawing in particular I was really happy with the tiny highlights on his brow, nose, and the corner of his mouth. I thought it did a lot to put more life in the sketch!
Years ago most of the art I posted was sketchbook drawings with color added digitally. I had really missed doing that so I'm glad I'm back to it and that people seem to enjoy it. I think having the texture of the traditional materials is really appealing.
Thanks so much again for your ask!
