I *just* realized that Gregg Berger aka Cornfed Pig from Duckman aka Jecht from Final Fantasy X aka Cutthroat Bill from Curse of Monkey Island... also worked on the widely syndicated, St. Louis-produced PBS phonics show "The Letter People," which taught me to read by the time I was three. In addition to playing several letter people himself (including Mr. V, the smoothest, suavest motherfucker in the alphabet in his Violet Velvet Vest), he also had a standout performance as the poor experimental word machine that Miss O fucking tortured by forcing it to try applying conventional short vowel logic to words like "cold" or "to" or "word" despite his literal *constant* pleas for her to stop as he belches smoke all over the laboratory. Girlboss gets the goods as usual. It's all on YouTube. Seriously, check out that Mr. V episode. Wait for his introductory song to wrap up, then listen as that velvety sum'bitch learns your ass on what the voiced labiodental fricative is all about.

If you are a Millennial or Gen Z in America and are genuinely taking the piss out of Gen Alpha for "not being able to read" I just want to let you know (as someone in your age group) that you're turning into your parents in a lot of unhealthy and harmful ways.
Who's fault is it that these kids aren't learning phonics pal? Look around yourself at who is responsible for our government/public schools and who is raising them. Kids are and have always been kids, adults however change drastically over time. You can't blame Boomers for your problems but not accept (at least partial) responsibility for Gen Alpha's problems. These are the children of our generation and it's our responsibility to give them a solid foundation and if we don't do that, we cannot blame them for not having it.
We are all victims of the larger political system and Gen Alpha is already being systemically repressed. They will grow up from birth with the whole sum of human knowledge and access to instant communication in the palms of their hands. This makes them EXTREMELY hard to control from a governmental standpoint. Why do you think we suddenly have this unwarranted, unprecedented and illogical change in how kids are being taught to read? The system is already trying to rob these kids of their power to make change by denying them access to information in the only ways it can. Instead of seeing that for what it is and helping empower the next generation, a lot of you are continuing the trauma cycle of "younger generation bad" and it's really disappointing. I see and hear your struggles, especially millennials. Y'all have been getting blamed for shit since you had no control over since you were kids, let's not do that to the next batch of kids though okay? It's our jobs to build these kids up.

I’m kinda confused by the “gen alpha can’t read!” “It’s because they stopped teaching phonics!” People because like. As far as I can see. They stopped teaching phonics in most classrooms in the 30’s. So, like, most people today didn’t grow up with phonics as the way they were taught to read either.
I always assumed the reason we don’t use phonics very much in class is because English is a very phonically inconsistent language. Like -ough, I before e except after c (and except this gigantic list of exceptions). English is a bit of a Frankenstein language, it never seemed like phonics were all that useful when 70% of the language is from different language roots and therefor will have different phonics rules

That isn't correct. The article literally states that an estimated 60% of kindergarten through second graders in the US are being taught programs that follow the balanced literacy model which is what Units of Study is based off of. It seems like overall New York has utilized this model more within its school system, but this is not just limited to "one small part of America", and it is unproductive to dissmiss it as such. This has been one of the dominant literacy teaching models in the US for over 20 years.

This explains so much about why 20 somethings are just unable to read to any level of complexity beyond a tweet. The miserable failure of US pedagogy

Actually needing to deconstruct Pearl's ze/zem pronouns on this post because even we get fucking confused, using comparisons with he/him pronouns*!
Ze = he
Zem = him
Ze's = his and he's
Zemself = himself
Adding a quick edit that Pearl says zeir also works in place of "ze's" when using possessive pronouns
It's also pronounced like the letter z. Except for when the "em" is added. Then it's like short z phonic and 'em'.
*Do NOT use he/him on Pearl, I'm just using this as the closest example to understanding Pearl's neos

so i tried to tokipona-fy the names of the hermits
⚠️I am still a beginner in toki pona, so if anything here violates the language/phonics rules, IM SORRY I tried⚠️
Under the cut is a brief explanation of toki pona and how the words and letters are pronounced, and reblogged after it is a list I've made (with some credited help) of each hermit, their tokipona-fied name, their combined sign, and an explanation of why I chose what I chose.
Tumblr media
For those of you who don't know what toki pona is, it's a minimalist language with only 120 official words and ~135 widespread words. It's got only 14 letters and 14 phonemes (sounds). For comparison, the english language has roughly 1 million words, 26 letters, and 44 phonemes.
Toki pona does not have the english letters b, c, d, f, g, h, q, r, v, x, y, or z. You may now be realizing how difficult (impossible) it would be to mimic a name like Bdubs in this language. Not only do B and D not exist in toki pona, but the U here makes the "uh" sound, a sound that ALSO isnt in toki pona.
Each letter in toki pona makes one, and only one, sound. J is pronounced like english Y as in "yikes". A is pronounced like "fAr", E is pronounced like "bEt", I sounds like "whEEE!" (or according to some like "bIt"), O is pronounced like "Or", and U is pronounced like "mOOn".
In addition, there's several specific phonics rules for toki pona. You can't end any syllable with a consonant other than N (although vowels are allowed) and the phonomes Wu, Wo, Ji, and Ti are illegal.
Toki pona uses 14 latin letters (a,e,i,j,k,l,m,n,o,p,s,t,u,w), but it also has a separate glyphic form called sitelen pona.
For each hermit, I'm going to give their tokipona-fied name, a combined glyph, the name of the words in the glyph, a meaning for those words, and then an explanation for Everything.

"#what planet are 35% of you FROM" 😂 that's so funny and! if you wish for a serious, completely honest answer re: 'zine' pronounced as 'z-ee-n', i've only learned that it's supposed to be the last part of 'magazine' like years into having seen this word pop up in my fandom circles. As an English as a Second Language speaker, who has never heard the word spoken and only have ever read it, I took the pronunciation pattern from words I have heard spoken with the -ine ending (fine, vine, line, dine, etc.) and decided it sounded Logical and Accurate 😂 And after I learned, years later, 'z-ee-n' sounded so incorrect and fake to my ears I just kept on using the incorrect pronunciation, just for the heck of it
I admit that after I reblogged going 'HOW THO' I read the replies and tags for a bit and a friend told me her reasons and on consideration I am forced to concede that there are in fact several reasons why people might not pronounce it 'z-ee-n', most of which I am too old to have considered, including the cultural relevance of Vine, the fact that modern fandom has begun divorcing the idea of zines from the idea of a Physical Object and therefore 'magazine' is not an intuitive jump, and the curse that is Phonics Education (my parents taught me to read mostly on accident and therefore the American education system failed to get a damage multiplier on me, but even if that weren't true, elementary was just. So long ago).
My First Thoughts are usually bitchy and judgmental and end up in the tags even though I know intellectually that people read them, because I still think of my blog as a place where I am at home and therefore I'm allowed to mutter rude things under my breath but I probably ought to start treating it at least a LITTLE like a Third Space where I should aim for Not Being Awful XD
But thank you for this! ESL is another reason I hadn't really considered, so I will add it to my list and endeavor to be less of a judgmental aunty in future 😂

another education rant under a readmore so i don't drive you all insane :)
talking about nclb being the sole reason "gen alpha can't read" literally makes zero sense to me. i grew up with the effects of nclb. like i can read. (big caveat there disclaimer!!! i am not every child. i could also go on about older gen z's media literacy & critical thinking skills but i won't.) but now the effects of nclb are so much more concentrated than when i was in school. social studies and science are now a tiny fraction of the k-6 school day which makes me heart sad.
adult illiteracy has been an issue for a really long time. incarcerated children are most likely to be illiterate or be years behind their peers. these are not new problems. the "balanced" literacy shit is a big problem in districts that serve historically marginalized students. for example, iirc, oakland, california has yet to adopt, as a district, explicit phonics instruction, despite pressure. this was a big issue in nyc as well up until recently. the issue compounds if children miss school for whatever reason, which is a problem in some districts for certain populations. lack of transportation, family issues, illness, gang violence, etc.
phonics instruction isn't enough. phonics instruction isn't enough when we don't give students the prior knowledge they need in order to understand wtf it is that they're reading. being able to decode isn't enough. while any phonics curriculum worth its salt will have exercises to help students show they actually understand the text they're reading, it deeply bothers me that we have a wealth of research that shows background knowledge (in science, social studies, cultural understanding, etc.) trumps decoding skills that aid comprehension.
idk what's going on with gen alpha and younger members of gen z. but i think it extends beyond "they didn't get phonics instruction bc of nclb!!!!" 🙄 the level of apathy we're seeing has been building for probably 20 years, which tracks with the passing of nclb. students don't care anymore. parents do not care. teachers do not care. why should they? tbh. Lol. everything sucks.
i will end my dissertation here BUT i think it is complicated. and if i see another tiktok that simplifies the science of reading into a five second clip i'll lose my mind. idk if anything i wrote makes any sense either

Best Way To Learn Pinyin
Read more. This is the first step to learning Pinyin well. First of all, we should let children know these Pinyin, and read Pinyin more to deepen their understanding ability. Learning Pinyin should not be rushed for success. Children who have just learned Pinyin have the poor understanding ability and will not learn it normally. Read it three to five times a day, or you can play some spelling games.
Write more. It is best to read and write while paying attention to the correct position of pinyin letters in four lines and three squares; After each pinyin can be written, start dictation or dictation. It takes time to memorize them. After a week of persistence, you will be pleasantly surprised to find that you have mastered them.
Practice. After reading and writing, you should practice more, which is mainly an intensive exercise after reading and writing. It's best to make some phonetic cards of single finals, play games, and compete with family and friends to see who can spell more compound finals. You can also make all the Pinyin into cards, and read out the card when you draw it.
Use it more. If you learn Pinyin, you should apply it to real life. Read more Chinese books with Pinyin and practice Pinyin in reading; Try typing with the Pinyin input method on your mobile phone or computer; Pay more attention to practice in life, so that you will be able to use it flexibly soon.
